Cobblestone’s anniversary this Halloween Quilt and fabric store celebrating one year in business

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — When Amy Sorrell and her mother, Janice Snider, couldn’t find the fabric they wanted in the area, the shopped elsewhere. When they got tired of that, they started their own store.

This Halloween will mark the one-year anniversary of Sorrell and Snider opening their business, Cobblestone Quilts and Fabrics.

“When Jo-Ann Fabrics closed, it was hard to find fabric in town,” recalled Sorrell.

“There wasn’t much selection in town so we’d drive across the lake to Vermont or to Malone.”

“It was an hour drive to a fabric store,” said Snider. “That’s a long drive.”

The mother-daughter duo began their business venture and hasn’t looked back.

The secret to the shop’s success has been carrying several lines of fabric, including Northcott, Red Rooster, RJR, Thimbleberries and Maywood and an array of patterns. Offering homemade purses, tote bags and quilts and consignment items, as well as hosing regular quilting classes hasn’t hurt either.

“It’s constant here,” Sorrell said of the shop’s flow of customers.

Sorrell also credits that to keeping prices affordable.

“I try to keep costs [for fabric] under $10 a yard, but there are a few specialty fabrics that cost a little more,” said Sorrell. “We even have some that are $3.99. Fabric doesn’t have to be expensive.”

The shop’s location in the heart of Morrisonville in an old Victorian house is one Sorrell and Snider both think couldn’t get much better.

“I like the idea of having a quilt shop in a Victorian house because it’s an old-fashioned hobby in an old-fashioned building. It just goes together.”

Having the small shop also reminds Snider of a piece of Americana lost in many towns today.

“When I was a kid, I can remember going to a different little store for everything,” she said. “I like the idea of a street with little shops. I wish there was more downtown.”

And, just as Halloween and their anniversary draws closer, Sorrell and Snider have adopted a stray cat. However, it’s not just any stray cat — it’s a black cat.

a bad freezing rain so I brought him inside,” said Sorrell. “He started sleeping in our scrap basket in the back. So, we named him Scraps.”

However, Scraps is no freeloader. He’s the shop’s unofficial greeter.

“When the bells on the door ring, he comes running right up front and greets people,” said Sorrell. “He’s our new addition for Halloween.”

“I find it very unique a black cat adopted us. There must be a message there somewhere,” Snider added, laughing.

Tech jobs in need of women Caregivers and brain games

T

he technology sector is worth a serious look for those seeking to change careers and others who are selecting an educational path leading to a career. Male workers are abundantly represented in many technology careers, female workers are generally not. This week, I hope to create some interest for females who may consider the sector.

While the best paying occupation for a woman in 2009 was pharmacist with a median weekly income of $1,475, six of the top 20 paying jobs were in a technology field; the lowest of which paid more than $1,000 a week on average. For more career statistics visit the Department of Labor ’s Web site at www.dol.gov/wb/stats/main.htm.

One source of technology career info that has numerous articles written by women is the O’Reilly Community. Under the banner of Women in Technology, O’Reilly has assembled a large collection of interesting posts that includes Julia Lerman’s Proud to be a “Geekette” and Carla Schroder ’s My Fabulous Geek Career. Readers willing to wade through sporadic geek-speak on things like Linux User Groups and the FOSS community (Free and Open Source Software) will find some excellent reading. Find

Another source of information is Women in Technology International. Founded

any caregivers neglect their need for mental stimulation for the sake of the person in their care, usually with unhealthy results.

Like any other part of the body, the brain needs activity to stay fit and vital.

Here are a few easy ways to keep the brain healthy: Be socially active. Take a friend up on that offer for a cup of coffee. Join a reading club, or an on-line chat group. Research has shown social activities help maintain brain function and reduce stress, which has been shown to be a memory-buster.

Tackle a puzzle. Word-find and crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles all give the brain a healthy work-out.

Learn something new. Sign up for a college class. Take a CPR course. Attend a lecture on an intriguing topic, or go to an art show. Learn a new language. Read a book on an unfamiliar topic. Don’t have time to read? Visit the local library to see what recorded books are available to borrow.

Get moving. Even a brisk walk, a few times a week, can increase blood flow to the brain, and the rest of the body will appreciate it too! Bring along a friend for an added

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants. Green leafy vegetables are high in folate. Broccoli has been linked to lower levels of memory loss. Foods that are high in “good fats,” like nuts, salmon, and olive oil, all contribute to brain health. Consult with a health-care professional about taking an omega-3 supplement. Take a multi-vitamin every day, but try to get most vitamins directly from food sources, and drink alcohol in moderation. Avoid nicotine altogether.

Politics, joblessness, generosity, trust and more politics More on politics ... ‘tis the season Don’t you just love this time of year? The air is crisp, the mountains are full of color and the political machines are grinding away unearthing their opponent’s dirty laundry.

Everywhere I turn it seems someone is telling me why I should not vote for the “other candidate.” Not why I vote for them, but why the other person is just about the lowest person on earth and not fit to hold office. This partisan wrangling appears to be coming to a full boil as the Tea Party Movement here locally and nationally pushes an even more angry message.

It struck me the other day in an e-mail from UNYTEA chairman Mark Barie they are now boasting more than 1,000 members. With more than 650,000 residents in the 23rd Congressional District, the excitement generated

by UNYTEA is representative of what happens all over this country. I think the vast majority of Americans can agree on 80 percent of the issues facing our nation. Unfortunately, we are torn apart fighting over the remaining 20 percent of the issues. The very vocal minority grab hold of the few issues that get our blood boiling and whip us into a frenzy.

Then, once the election is over, we are forced to sit passively by while little gets done and wait for the next election cycle to do it all over again.

The last election was all about change.

Things got changed and we still aren’t any

happier. Instead of celebrating our common interests we expend a ton of money and energy fighting over issues that we expect our political representatives to resolve on our behalf. And, if we aren’t sending them there to solve these problems through diplomacy and compromise, then their only purpose for going is to add fuel to the differences already dividing us, get great benefits, and a lifetime pension. There has to be a better way. The anger Americans are feeling from both sides of the issues need to be channeled into solutions, not more bitterness.

We all can agree changes need to be made.

But with so much disrespect for the “other side,” even when one party holds all the cards, they seem to accomplish little except getting themselves into trouble. Americans have always come together in times of crisis and optimism has always been our national outlook. If we aren’t into a full crisis now, we are certainly on the doorstep. Let’s hope the next group of representatives we send to Washington and Albany, as well as here at home, can start fulfilling the promises they so easily make, instead of adding to the noise.

Winterizing those roses

T

hroughout history, the flower most coveted and cultivated is the rose. There is no doubt that roses are both beautiful and fragrant flowers that can be found in almost every color of the rainbow. There are countless poems about them and books dedicated to their culture and care. Despite this, many people who grow roses still have questions about caring for their beloved garden flowers. Here in the North Country, the most common concern is how to make sure their rose makes it through the winter.

Some roses need very little, if any protection to make it through a cold winter. Hardy shrub roses and wild-type roses (such as rugosa roses) can be left in the garden in zone 4 with little to no extra protection. To winterize these roses, simply irrigate adequately in late autumn and discontinue any fertilizers by late summer or early autumn.

Hybrid tea roses and floribundas will need extra protection to make it through our long, cold winters. In late November or early December, reduce breakage of tall canes by winter winds by cutting them back to 30 to 36 inches and tying tips together.

Remove dead and fallen leaves around the plants. Hill soil over the center of the plants

in broad rounded mounds at least 12 inches high and 12 inches wide. Cover the soil mounds with a mulch of leaves, straw, boughs, or some similar material.

For maximum winter protection, cover the rose bush with a protective cylinder. Use straw, leaves or similar material to insulate the bush inside the cone. Puncture several one-inch holes around the top of the cone for air circulation.

To winterize climbers, remove them from their support. Lay them on the ground and cover with 3 to 4 inches of soil. If this cannot be done, gather the tips of the stems together, tie them, and wrap in straw with a wrapping of burlap over that. The base of the climber should be covered with 10 inches of soil.

When severe winter weather conditions have subsided, which is typically early April here, remove most of the mulch and soil from around the bases of plants.

Unemployment rates Neighboring Saratoga and Hamilton counties’ unemployment rates are among the lowest in the state, with Hamilton leading the state at 4.9 percent, Yates County at 5.7 percent, Saratoga at 5.9 percent and Ontario at 6.1 percent. Clinton County comes in a 9.1 percent, Essex at 7 percent and Franklin at 7.8 percent. The state’s highest unemployment rates are in the Bronx at 13 percent, Kings County at 10.5 percent and St. Lawrence at 9.9 percent according to the information from the Department of Labor for August.

United Way campaign Just quick reminder about the United Way drive currently under way. The United Way allows us all to come together for the good of our fellow neighbor. Despite what difference we all may have, there are those among us who will always need some assistance. Those of us fortunate enough to have our health and a regular paycheck can make a big difference by volunteering your time and/or making a contribution to the United Way, who in turn will distribute the funds raised to more than 30 agencies serving our communities. If your employer hasn’t provided you an opportunity to hear more about the Unit-

ed Way, ask them if they would consider letting you assist with an in-house drive. Then call the United Way office at 563-0028. The good folks there will help you get started and send in some volunteers to explain the many who are benefited by these wonderful organizations. They might even send me.

On the surface, their intent was to purchase property then lease it out. By nature, I think most of us want to take folks at their word. The reality is we just can’t let our guard down for minute. Kudos to the folks at Whitbeck Associates in Lake Placid for looking past the apparent quick buck and investing the time for due diligence. It’s a valuable lesson we should all make a point to recall when placed in a similar situation.

Gereau’s big adventure: Manitoba or bust!

W

hen I tell people I am heading to Manitoba for a guided bow hunt the response I normally get isn’t “Where in Manitoba?” it’s more like “Where is Manitoba?”

“I don’t really know,” is my patent response — and that’s not all that far from the truth.

I know it is many, many miles away — a fact that will surely be driven home as my hunting chum, Mike Fenoff, and I take to the highway this week for the 1,900-mile ride.

My concern isn’t so much the 1,900-mile ride, but more the 19,000-mile ride back .... or so it will most certainly seem.

But alas, life’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride — as Peter Fonda so aptly put it in the 1969 flick “Easy Rider.”

Fonda is one cool cat — and those are some super words to live by. Which is totally why I opted to drive 30-plus hours over the five-hour flight.

Okay, not really. Are you nuts? You actually think I’d chose 30-plus hours of staring at pavement and brake lights until my eyes bleed over being waited on by stewardesses with arms full of those tiny little liquor

bottles?

Nope. It’s more because I couldn’t pony up the $700 plane fare ... plus baggage fee, pillow and blanket fee, meal and drink fee and God knows what else they whack you for these days.

I’m a journalist for Pete’s sake ... not an employee of the Adirondack Park Agency.

Soooo, I plan to make the best of it, which is where the whole “enjoy the ride” philosophy comes into play. Actually, it is a mindset I have long subscribed to.

Perhaps it has something to do with the deep psychological scars that linger from my childhood, left by my dad’s refusing to stop the car for a single bathroom break during the entire 22-hour trip we took to Florida each year.

“We’ve still got a quarter-tank of gas, can you hold out another few exits?” he’d bellow, just as the last rest area for 60 miles whizzed by.

I can still picture him standing at the rear of our panel-sided station wagon, hair all disheveled, stuffing enough food and drink in the back to last through a Sammy Davis Jr. telethon.

“We’ve got a schedule to keep,” he’d say, slamming the huge swinging door at the tail of the Queen Family Truckster and glaring hard at his oversized wrist watch.

And then, inevitably, would come the million dollar question: “Okay now, does anyone need to use the bathroom?”

I still wet myself a little when I say that sentence aloud.

“Uhmmmmm ... no, not really, dad,” I’d say, staring blankly at the ground with my hands behind my back, grinding the toe of one shoe in the sand.

“Well, try anyway,” he’d holler, glaring so hard at you it all but made peeing impossible anyway. “I don’t want to hear you’ve got to go an hour into this trip.”

An hour? We all knew better. It was next step North Carolina. The man had an iron bladder, I swear.

Anyway, back to the Manitoba story, which was my motivation for this column in the first place.

Honest.

As you read this, I’ll be readying for a seven-day guided bow hunt in Minnedosa, Manitoba, just east of Saskatchewan.

I chose Manitoba for a host of reasons, but mainly because of the plethora of large whitetail combined with almost non-existent hunting pressure.

In a province the size of Texas, only 3,400

bow permits are issued every year — that’s resident and non-resident combined. And, the rate of harvest is 40 percent, which is nearly unheard of in the U.S. I also fell in with a great guide who supports and gives discounts to people with physical limitations. The fact that both he and his son are disabled no doubt has everything to do with that fact.

I plan to have a camouflage laptop with me and will be chronicling the hunt from my tree stand as it unfolds.

Again a slight exaggeration, but I will be giving daily reports and taping portions of the hunt which will be posted to my blog at www.denpubs.com.

Now if I can just get Mike to watch “Easy Rider” before we go and talk him into a half dozen pit stops along the way, I should be golden. No pun intended.

by Paladino noted below; sadly, Carl Paladino speaks the awkward truth. No man chooses the homosexual life — and no man would wish it on his child.

And there are kids who are moved this way and that by self-doubt and little more.

What’s more interesting is the concept of norm. It is quite normal for homophobes to experience the gay feeling from which they run with such vigor. Those who scream the loudest may be the most in denial. Try that.

Our weird politicians seem to know this.

They live it.

Regardless, I know no one who would choose homosexuality, given the choice, and I see no reason to encourage self-doubt in the young by any means at all. And this is what Carl Paladino is saying, as far as I can tell from this account.

On another level, this is private stuff — and should not involve the state. There are many reasons. No two men are alike. Respect and tolerance should rule. Nothing more. To suggest that marriage is appropriate for same-sex relations makes little sense to me. I believe marriage is set up for kids — and little more. If the same-sex couple wants kids, society should respect this — and help with recognition. It need not be marriage. Civil process can license the

parent of any sex. Religious process is not the state’s business.

Who can argue with this statement: “I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option — it isn’t.”

It is not pretty, it is not nice — but is it not true?

What sort of governor does the state need now? One who tells all segments what they want to hear — or a man who simply lets the chips fall where they may?

Given the GAY FORCE in society today, it’s refreshing to hear a bit from the other side.

One thing is clear. He’s law abiding — and says what he feels.

The man will get my vote. And we have no objection to a homosexual couple or individual raising a child.

A gay parent is better than no parent.

Sexual preference is a private matter in which the state should play no role.

The first-ever Zumba for the Cure will be hosted Sunday, Oct. 17, from 2-4 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall, 47 Wood Falls Road.

“Fifteen local Zumba instructors will hold a two-hour event with non-stop Zumba to raise money for the Treasure Chests, which is a breast cancer support and research group of the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center,” explained Amy Peryea, a local Zumba instructor. “[Zumba] is a Latin-inspired dance class,” explained Peryea. “It’s a power workout with different varieties of dance such as cumbia, reggaeton, salsa, cha-cha-cha and a lot of other Latin

music.”

“It’s the most energized work out you can imagine,” added Peryea.

The Zumbathon will have a stage in the middle of the room with the instructors performing their songs on stage along with the participants, explained Peryea. For those who are not fond of dancing but still want to support the event, there will be opportunities to mingle and speak with cancer survivors.

“It’s open to the public, so we’re not telling everyone they have to Zumba,” explained Peryea. “You can just come and watch.”

Although there is a required minimum donation of $6, it is up to the participant to donate more money if they so wish. An open bar offering beverages for an additional cost will also be available.

inding time to exercise can be a challenge for everyone. With busy work, school, and family schedules, finding time to work out can be tough. So why not squeeze in ways to work out at work? Here are some creative tips from the Mayo Clinic to find ways to get exercise in at the office from taking fitness breaks to walking meetings.

• Make the most of your commute — Walk or bike to work. If you ride the bus, get off a few blocks early and walk the rest of the way. If you drive to work, park at the far end of the parking lot.

• Look for opportunities to stand — You’ll burn more calories standing than sitting. Stand while talking on the phone. Better yet, try a standing desk — or improvise with a high table or counter. Eat lunch standing up. Trade instant messaging and phone calls for walks to your co-workers desks or offices.

• Take fitness breaks — Rather than hanging out in the lounge with coffee or a snack, take a brisk walk or do some gentle stretching. Pull your chin toward your chest until you feel a stretch along the back of your neck, or slowly bring your shoulders up toward your ears.

• Trade your office chair for a fitness ball — A firmly inflated fitness or stability ball can make a good chair. You’ll improve your balance and tone your core muscles while sitting at your desk. You can even use the fitness ball for wall squats or other exercises during the day.

• Keep fitness equipment in your work area — Store resistance bands — stretchy cords or tubes that offer weight-like resistance when you pull on them — or small hand weights in a desk drawer or cabinet. Do arm curls between meetings or tasks.

• Get social — Organize a lunchtime walking group. You might be surrounded by people who are ready to lace up their walking shoes — and hold each other accountable for regular exercise. Enjoy the camaraderie, and offer encouragement to one another when the going gets tough.

• Conduct meetings on the go — When it’s practical, schedule walking meetings or brainstorming sessions. Do laps inside your building or, if the weather cooperates, take your walking meetings outdoors.

• Pick up the pace — If your job involves walking, do it faster. Keep your chin up and your shoulders slightly back — and remember to breathe freely while you walk.

• If you travel for work, plan ahead — If you’re stuck in an airport waiting for a plane, grab your bags and take a brisk walk. Choose a hotel that has fitness facilities — such as treadmills, weight machines or a pool — or bring your equipment with you. Jump-ropes and resistance bands are easy to sneak into a suitcase. Of course, you can do jumping jacks, crunches and other simple exercises without any equipment at all.

Remember that anything is better than nothing. Make it fun and get others involved. You will feel better, refreshed, and have a more productive day with a little movement added in.

Walking to remember

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that robs millions of people of their lives each year and thousands of families of the loved ones as they once knew them. That’s something Debbie Frederick of West Chazy will never forget.

Frederick lost her father, the late Douglas J. Hoffman of Mooers Forks, in August 2009 after his five-year battle with Alzheimer’s. His diagnosis of the debilitating disease in 2004 came as a shock to Frederick and her family. Hoffman wasn’t even at the age many would consider a senior citizen.

“He was only 62,” said Frederick. “When I thought of Alzheimer’s before, I didn’t think I’d

have to deal with it until my parents were in their 80s and 90s.”

In the beginning, Frederick’s father showed “very subtle signs” of the disease, she said.

“It was really difficult to differentiate between if it was really happening to him or if something else was,” recalled Frederick. “He could remember the Buffalo Bills were playing on Sunday but had difficulty remembering he had to brush his teeth that day.”

“My husband really noticed it when we were tapping for maple syrup,” she continued. “Dad would get confused what the next step was even though it had been something he had been doing for the last few years.”

The home of Lincoln and Ann Sunderland, located at the historic Keese Homestead at the corner of Union and Harkness roads, will be open to the public for guided tours Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23.

Dannemora Elementary sale OK’d SARANAC — The Saranac Central School Board of Education has unanimously approved the sale of the former Dannemora Elementary School building to the village of Dannemora.

The sale, approved at a Sept. 20 meeting of the board, will allow the village to purchase the building for $350,000.

The sale will be final unless a petition signed by 10 percent of qualified voters within the district — 675 signatures — is submitted to the school district clerk within 30 days of the board’s approval. A valid petition would require the board to hold a public vote. The sale would also be denied if voters in the village of Dannemora do not support the purchase. As of Tuesday, a referendum date has not been set by the village.

If the sale is finalized, the district will enter into a 10-year, $1 per year field lease with the village for students to continue to use the field

behind the former school for fall and spring sports.

“The sale to a municipality within the school district is a positive and healthy transaction,” district superintendent Kenneth O’Cringle said in a statement. “The Dannemora building will provide the village with an opportunity to consolidate offices, reduce energy and maintenance costs and expand upon services for residents in future years.”

The school district closed both Dannemora and Cadyville Elementary schools due to declining student enrollment in July 2006 and as a measure to reduce expenses. Since that time, the district has been marketing the school buildings for sale.

Both buildings are in good condition, Cringle stated, but have cost residents approximately $40,000 a year to maintain.

The Cadyville Elementary School building has not yet been sold.

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Lincoln and Ann Sunderland are inviting the public into their home and to have a glimpse inside a piece of the North Country’s past.

The Sunderlands, who own the historic Keese Homestead at the corner of Union and Harkness roads, are welcoming people into their home in what will be a rare public viewing next weekend, Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23.

“We seldom open the house for tours,” said Ann. “This won’t happen again for a long time, if ever.”

The Sunderland home is a stone high-style Georgian house built in 1837 by Peter Keese, son of Richard Keese, for whom the village of Keeseville was named. Peter Keese is credited for being an abolitionist whose support for the anti-slavery movement was evidenced with his signature on a petition for the formation of the Clinton County Anti-Slavery Society, also in 1837.

Though not officially documented, the Keese Homestead is believed to have been one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad in New York State before fugitive slaves made their way to Canada. Slaves in the south would make their way to New York City then travel further north to Albany, Troy, Glens Falls and then Peru before heading to Champlain and crossing the border in Lacolle, Quebec.

In August 2009, the property’s connection to the anti-slavery movement was reestablished when an historic marker was reinstalled at the site. The original marker was lost a few years ago as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Opening the 19th century building to the public will serve as both a fundraiser for the Peru Community Church Ladies Guild, said Ann, and as a chance for people to learn more

about the area’s role in abolitionism.

“Our church, like most churches, can always use some extra money,” she said. “It’s also a chance to see history. There are very few houses still standing around here that are this old with this kind of history involved.”

The Sunderlands’ 5,596-square-foot house still has many of the amenities that were incorporated into the structure when it was built, said Ann, including a kitchen fireplace with a crane and baking oven.

“We’ve tried not to change the structure much,” said Ann. “We feel very strongly that [buildings like this] should be kept even though it’s a challenge to preserve them.”

Guided tours of the house will be offered Oct. 22 and 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost of admission will be $5 per person, with children age 6 and younger admitted free. Free cider and snacks will be served following the tour.

A Chinese auction will also be held — winning bidders need not be present to win. Proceeds of the auction will also benefit programs of the Peru Community Church Ladies Guild.

Though the Keese Homestead house officially stands within the boundaries of the town of Ausable, it is often considered to be part of the town of Peru. Prior to Ausable’s formation and the changing of boundary lines in 1839, the house stood in Peru. In fact, the Keese Homestead was Peru’s first settlement, established in 1789 by Keese family ancestor William Keese, who claimed the spot as payment for his surveying services following the American Revolution.

‘The Last Supper’to be unveiled Steel creation by John Kokoszka latest addition to Route 9 sculpture garden

Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — It’s said it took Leonardo da Vinci nearly three years to complete his painting of The Last Supper on a wall of the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. And, for John Kokoszka, it took almost as long to recreate the piece in a different design.

Kokoszka recently completed a mild steel interpretation of The Last Supper — also bearing the same name of da Vinci’s masterpiece of Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles — after nearly two years of painstaking work.

“I like doing very difficult pieces,” said Kokoszka. “And, I chose The Last Supper because it’s a very difficult piece.”

Kokoszka created the 26 ft. by 6 ft. piece for the Stone Ledge Sculpture Garden, a familiar roadside marvel to those traveling along State Route 9 between Keeseville and Plattsburgh. The sculpture garden was created in 1995 for Jackie and Richard Sabourin, consisting of Kokoszka’s earlier pieces, and is something Kokoszka said he is proud to add to with his latest work.

“I’m very proud of this piece. I imagine it was

hard to paint but it was even harder to make a sculpture out of it,” said Kokoszka, whose piece is accentuated by ceramic food pieces created by artist Carol Vossler of Loon Lake. “Getting everything in alignment and just right was very difficult. It was amazing how it all came together.”

Kokoszka’s inspiration for the piece came from his great-great grandmother, he said, who he always remembered for having images and likenesses of Jesus throughout her apartment.

However, it was while recreating The Last Supper that inspiration struck once again, as it did when he was creating the likeness of abolitionist John Brown more than a decade ago, which is also displayed today in the sculpture garden. “[The steel] really spoke to me,” said Kokoszka. “It was like when I was working on the John Brown piece, like the spirit came down and helped me work with the piece to get it how I wanted it to come out.”

Kokoszka also credited the materials he received from Jeffords Steel and Engineering Company, Plattsburgh, for making the piece possible.

“I work with them because they work with you real well,” said Kokoszka. “Jeffords Steel is excellent.”

The students came together recently to create 175 pinwheels as part of “Pinwheels for Peace,” an art installation project started in 2005 by art teachers Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan of Coconut Creek, Fla. The project was created as a way for students to express their feelings about events in the world and in their own lives. The project was brought to the school district last year by art teacher Jennifer Winternitz, who has since taken a teaching position with the Ausable Valley Central School District. Though Winternitz was no longer with the Peru school district, art teacher Tracey Laundry said she felt it was important to keep the tradition going.

“We felt it was important because it’s a multi-curriculum kind of project where we involve a writing piece where they could write a poem or a haiku or a short essay about their feelings about peace,” explained Laundry. “We just wanted to get the kids minds on nonviolence and how tolerance and intolerance affects people.”

peace and designing pinwheels, but also planting the pinwheels on the school grounds Sept. 21, which is recognized as the International Day for Peace, explained Laundry. The planting culminates the project by giving a sharp visual effect which Laundry said is nonpolitical but strong nonetheless.

“It felt great,” Laundry said of seeing the number of pinwheels created and seeing students get excited about participating.

Sixth-grade student Audrey Ampomah said she enjoyed taking part in the project, which sent a clear message.

“I enjoyed it because we sent a message throughout the world of peace,” said Ampomah. “That there should be no war.”

Lillian Mann-Lucas, another sixth-grade student, said the project was “really fun because the whole sixth grade got to participate.”

“We actually had a lot of fun making our pinwheels, designing our own peace signs and writing our feelings out on them,” said Mann-Lucas. “Like Audrey said, there should be no war — only peace all the time,” The pinwheels sent a peaceful and aesthetically-pleasing message, said the girls, yet one Ampomah felt should also be a stern message to those who plan violent attacks such as the events that unfolded on Sept. 11, 2001.

“For all the people that are trying to attack us and for all the people who attacked the Twin Towers, shame on you,” she said. “They should feel bad for hurting our country. Nobody should attack us or anybody else. We should have peace throughout the world.”

In addition to the pinwheels created in the Peru school district, Laundry said Winternitz continued the project at Ausable Valley, with students there creating approximately 100 pinwheels there.

Inaugural marathon expected to net $500 for ACS

DANNEMORA — Though the numbers are still being crunched, the inaugural Jailbreak Trail Marathon is expected to raise roughly $500 for the American Cancer Society.

The event, held Oct. 10 in the village and town of Dannemora, saw more than 60 people participate in the day’s 13.1-mile halfmarathon, 26.2-mile fullmarathon, and 31-mile ultramarathon.

PERU — The annual Make-A-Wish Idol singing competition will return to Murphy’s Tavern, 225 State Route 22B, this Friday, Oct. 15.

The event, which raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York, will be held every Friday at 6:30 p.m. until Nov. 5.

The competition will again include cash prizes for top contestants and be rounded out by silent auctions and raffles between performances.

There is no cost to watch Make-A-Wish Idol, though the cost to enter the competition is $10.

CROP Walk this Saturday ROUSES POINT — The annual Northern Tier CROP Walk will take place this Saturday, Oct. 16, beginning at the Rouses Point Civic Center on Lake Street.

The three-mile walk, which will begin at 2 p.m., supports Church World Service, an international organization that provides assistance to refugees and victims of natural disasters and teaches self-sustaining technologies to underdeveloped countries. However, 25 percent of the money raised stays local.

PERU — Peru Central School’s homecoming weekend will be this Friday, Oct. 15, and Saturday, Oct. 16.

Festivities will begin with a community bonfire to the right of the varsity football field Friday night at 8:15 p.m. The bonfire, which will be overseen by the Peru Volunteer Fire Department, will include entertainment by the high school band and cheerleaders. Admission will be free and snacks will be sold to benefit the high school student council.

On Saturday, an inaugural 5K run will take place, beginning with registration at the Peru Intermediate School cafeteria at 8 a.m. The race will follow at 9 a.m. The run will follow the same route as the Peru Lions Club Turkey Trot, which starts at the intermediate school, travels north on Pleasant Street to Mannix Road and loops back to the school by Old Town Road and River Road.

Prizes will be awarded for specific age groups, added Wright, and the $10 registration fee will benefit the high school student council and class of 2013.

The high school’s annual homecoming parade will follow at 12:30 p.m., leaving the intermediate school parking lot and heading east on Pleasant Street to Main Street.

The varsity football team’s home game against Plattsburgh High School will be that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The homecoming dance will be held at the high school at 7 p.m.

Climate lecture at Miner Museum Oct. 21 CHAZY — On Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., the Alice T. Miner Museum will be host to Raymond N. Johnson, Ph.D., for a lecture entitled “Climate Science, Climate Change: What Does the Data Show?”

Climate science is a very interesting subject and takes one on a tour of many different technical disciplines. The challenge is to present the data in a way the general public understands without the sound bites and opinions often heard. The talk will include data from scientists around the world on the oceans, land and atmosphere and what we see happening today to our home, planet Earth.

Johnson’s scientific career spanned 30 years in research and development as an organic/analytical chemist. He is currently founder and director of the Institute of Climate Studies USA, www.icsusa.org. This lecture is the first of three scheduled for the fall.

“Then, the next year we started with the haunted house idea and it was such a huge success that we just started doing it every year,” Filion explained.

This year ’s haunted house will be based on the theme of a Haunted Movie Theater.

“We had a donation of a bunch of Christmas items this year so we decided to make one of the rooms in the haunted house The Nightmare Before Christmas,” said Filion. “Then, we just built from there.”

Other films to be in theater include Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein, and The Wizard of Oz. “The movies that are more Halloweenish,” Filion explained. “We just take the idea and make it a little scarier.”

People are also invited to wear costumes, which Filion said is really good for the kids as it gives them an extra chance to wear their costume, instead of just Halloween night.

“It just makes the atmosphere a little better,” she said.

The evening, which will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., will also feature games for youngsters, as well as raffles and a bake sale.

“It’s probably the biggest fundraiser that we do,” said Filion.

Admission to the event is a $1 donation.
