Bell’s Corn Maze donates proceeds to youth hockey

CHAZY — For the last three years, since the beginning of the annual Bell’s Corn Maze, Matt Bell has been donating proceeds to local causes.

On Oct. 3, a percentage of the proceeds raised during the day was donated to Chazy Youth Hockey.

“Chazy Youth Hockey owns its own rink,” explained Bell. “So, they have a lot of expenses there. Our mission is to keep hockey affordable and available to the community.”

Bell personally cares a lot about the rink as he spends a lot of time there.

“Three of my kids skate and they belong to

the club and have for several years,” he said.

In return for receiving the donation, members of Chazy Youth Hockey helped “haunt” the corn maze during “Fright Night,” held the evening of Oct. 3.

In the past, the fright nights seem to bring lessthan-ideal weather, and this past Saturday was no exception.

“You watch the horror movies, and how many Friday the 13th movies have you seen that there wasn’t a thunder storm,” asked Bell. “We tell people it adds to the ambiance.”

The rain doesn’t seem to keep people away, however, as Bell’s was able to donate $1,000 to

New school song earns composer recognition

“Starsplitter Fanfare,” a piece composed for the school by internationally-known composer Brian Balmages, has received the Editor ’s Choice Award from the J.W. Pepper Catalog, one of the world’s premiere sheet music suppliers.

According to Ricki Marin, president of the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, the PTO commissioned the piece for the school to “further enhance and support band and music at the elementary level.”

“I think it’s wonderful [the piece] is being recognized in such a positive way and that the PTO was able to provide an avenue for that success,” said Marin. “We wanted to do this to enhance the students’ educa-

Tournament to collect food, raise money for community

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — When 15-year-old Brandon Hurlburt was told he was too old to continue playing on the Bantam Soccer Team, it set in motion plans to have the first ever Bantam Cougar Classic.

After the soccer season had already begun for bantam age kids, ages 11-13, the Clinton County Youth Bureau rechecked all players’ birthdays to make sure they were all of the correct age.

Learning center to host an open house for community

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Champlain Children’s Learning Center Inc. has been serving the children of the Northern Tier for the last 11 years — yet some of the community is still unfamiliar with what services they provide.

In August 1998, the nonprofit childcare center open its doors to families at the former St. Patrick’s School. Since then, the center has been licensed to provide space for 98 children, ages 6 weeks to 12 years old.

The younger children are provided with numerous activities throughout the day, all to build important skill sets.

“We do art activities — anywhere from painting, to coloring, to cutting,” explained director Nicole Molinski.

“They do storytime, in which the teacher will sit with them on the floor and read books.”

According to the CCLC teaching phi-

losophy, “Children learn best when they’re having fun.”

The classrooms, which are split into age groups, provide children with free time, to choose how they want to play.

Children can visit the “drama area” where there is a kitchen set and baby dolls. Others can do activities at a table such as learning to write their name and draw pictures.

“Schools have actually noticed that with having the children in a center like this as early as they can, they’re more easy going,” explained Molinski.

“They’re more acceptable with routines and socialization.”

CCLC also provides Universal Prekindergarten, which allows children to prepare for kindergarten, the year before they start.

“It gears more towards those skills that the children need for entering into kindergarten,” explained Molinski. “[They can] recognize their alphabet and numbers and so on. This just pre-

MALONE — The New York State Department of Transportation has begun conducting repairs on the U.S. Route 11 bridge over the Salmon River in the village of Malone.

In order to facilitate repairs, a lane closure is expected to be in place for approximately two weeks. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction until the work is completed.

Some people are still unaware of these and other services provided by CCLC, which is why Molinski said they have a Halloween Open House every year, to allow the community to visit and raise money for CCLC. “We don’t charge anything, but we do ask for a dollar donation to go into the haunted house,” said Molinski.

“And, we have a bake sale, which parents and staff will bring in items and we’ll sell those during that night.”

The open house will be held Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., and will also have a small Trick-or-Treat, a storyteller, Halloween games and face painting.

“The community is welcome to stop in and bring friends,” said Molinski.

sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — When Laura Welch learned this spring she was the recipient of Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity’s seventh house, she was “exhilarated.”

“I wasn’t sure that I was hearing right and was very close to tears,” recalled Welch. “It’s not everyday that you find out you are selected for something that monumental in your life.”

Welch, along with husband Christopher and daughter Dakota, are currently waiting for work to begin on their home on Beverly Street, but the project is in need of a site supervisor.

“Basically, what we’re looking for is an individual who has some sort of experience in contracting,” explained CVHFH board secretary Christina McDonald. “From digging a hole for the basement to the whole works. Wiring, putting the sheet rock up, doing mudding. All of that.”

McDonald added the site supervisor would need good leadership skills and the ability to train other volunteers.

The position of site supervisor is often on a volunteer basis, but since so much time has passed without anyone volunteering, CVHFH is willing to pay $5,000.

“What we’re looking for is a commitment of at least three days a week,” McDonald explained. “Hopefully, one of those being a weekend.”

The plans are already in place for the house and CVHFH is hoping to have the basement and framing complete by winter.

“That would be big,” said McDonald.

of many organizations, including some from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh who have volunteers ready to work “at the drop of a hat.”

“We have a database of past volunteers, so we can contact people as well,” she said.

“I would like any interested site supervisor to know that I already have several people who are just waiting for someone to start the project,” said Welch, who will be helping as well to earn her “sweat equity” hours — a necessity for anyone receiving a CVHFH home. “We’re ready to go if someone is willing to take us to the next step.”

“We really, really are looking for someone who has the time to invest and is very good with people and has experience that they can put to good use,” said McDonald.

Habitat for Humanity looks to begin another project Christine McDonald, board secretary of Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity said CVHFH is looking to begin a “restore.”

“Every year we have a garage sale and it’s a big money-maker for us,” explained McDonald.

Now, they’re looking to make it a full-time project.

McDonald wants the public to be aware this project is in the works and it would be a place where people can drop off any items that could be used to build or decorate a house.

“They have these places where people, they take the surround from the fire place out and they bring it and donate it, and somebody could come in and buy that,” explained McDonald. “If they have nice windows but they’re replacing the windows, they could drop those off to us. That type of thing.”

McDonald added the restore could also be a place where businesses could unload their outdated items, such as faucets, when they receive a newer shipment.

Currently, CVHFH is looking to the vacant building they used during their August garage sale to set up the restore as a permanent fixture.

Is that true? Mostly it is. Is that bad? No, I don’t

think so.

Microsoft NT operating systems, which kept the same major design through Windows 2000/XP, operated in two modes called Kernel Mode and User Mode. Kernel Mode operates with the highest privilege levels and consists of the Hardware Abstraction Layer, called HAL, and Executive Services. User mode has lower privileges and consists of subsystems that include Win32, Win32 Security and others. Take an everyday application like Internet Explorer and examine how it operates.

Opening the program causes it to interact with the Win32 Subsystem which communicates needs to Executive Services which then interacts with HAL to control hardware. Because the program never directly interacts with hardware, everything stays under control. The analogy of a restaurant works well. Diners are applications, waiters are Executive Services and the chef is HAL. Keeping diners away from the chef and making them interact with the waiters is good practice and generally makes things run smoother.

The problem with the design is device drivers interacted with Kernel Mode and could cause system instability. In Vista, Microsoft changed the driver architecture by moving

root functionality away from Kernel Mode and placing it into the lower privileged User Mode making systems more stable.

But the technology was new, manufacturers had issues to overcome with the change and the end result was very poor Vista performance. Fast forward to the present time and the technology is considered “mature.”

harlotte is a lovely 7-week-old female kitten who is feline leukemia positive. She requires a home with no FELV negative cats, or has cats that are leukemia positive. She can live a normal life despite being positive, however, she needs to be adopted soon.

Ferrari is a friendly and active brindle-colored neutered dog who lost one of his front legs as a result of an accident. Despite having only three legs, he gets around with no effort. He enjoys other dogs and cats and loves people.

he Clinton County Office for the Aging has just finished up this years round of public hearings. We hold these hearings annually at nutrition sites around the county in order to educate and inform the public about Office for the Aging’s programs and services.

More importantly, we want to hear from seniors who use our programs about what works, what doesn’t, and what changes they would like to see. We use this information to mold our current programming, and to introduce new programs.

Some of the topics of interest to seniors this year were Home Energy Assistance Program eligibility guidelines, and what kind of benefit they could expect this year; what kind of assistance is available for home weatherization; Health Insurance Counseling, and how to pick a Medicare part D Plan, employment for seniors, and transportation, to name a few.

Transportation is a hot topic, with high fuel prices, a large county, and people having a variety of transportation needs.

Clinton County Public Transit does a great job with regular city and rural routes, and also the Paratransit bus for people who cannot access the regular routes, but they are unable to serve everyone. The Office for the Aging helps fund two bus-

So, let’s see how this sale could work in my favor. Because I’ve saved my coupon inserts, I have six coupons for 50 cents off four cups of yogurt.

I’m not limited to just buying four cups; I’ll buy 24 today! 24 yogurt cups may seem like a lot to buy at one time, but in comparing the expiration dates with the amount of yogurt our household will likely consume over the next month, I know that our family of five will eat it long before it expires. I buy four cups of each flavor that I want, never exceeding the purchase limit of four for any of the flavors. And wait until you see what I pay.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the grocery stores in my neighborhood do not double coupons. But around the country, many stores do. Imagine if I were shopping in a store that doubled coupons! each 50-cent coupon would double to $1 in value and all the yogurt would be free. Now that’s supercouponing!

Coupon Queen

At most stores, when a sale item is advertised “limit 4,” it does not refer to the number of total items of that type but, rather, the variety of each item. With the yogurt example, above, you would not be limited to four cups of yogurt. You’d be limited to four vanilla, four peach, four blueberry, four banana and so on.

How does this work? When purchase limits are put into place for a sale, most stores set the register to limit four scans at the sale price on the bar code of that product. But each variety of a product has its own unique bar code. So, while the advertisement may lead us to believe that we can buy just four yogurt cups, we can actually buy four of each flavor. If 12packs of soda are on sale “limit 5,” we can buy five 12-packs of each variety of soda.

As long as you don’t exceed the purchase limit on each flavor, type, or variety of an item you can essentially take home as many of that item as you want or need that day — and in turn, buy as many as you have coupons for. It’s a great way

Saying hello to the Northern Tier

s Jeremiah so eloquently wrote in last week’s edition of North Countryman, there are some “changes in store for your hometown newspaper.”

I have taken over the role of editor for the North Countryman, and I hope I can do this historic newspaper the justice it deserves.

This week, I read an article in Newsweek by Daniel Lyons titled “Don't Bail Out Newspapers — Let Them Die and Get Out of the Way.” In the article, Lyons starts off by writing “Nobody in their right mind believes the future of the news business involves paper and ink rather than pixels on a screen. We all know where the news business is headed, and what’s more, we’ve known it for at least a decade.”

In about a week, 300 people made comments on the story, with majority believing Lyons is off his rocker.

My favorite comment was from “luvthepup” who stated, “There still exists a sizable population who are infrequent users of electronic, printed media. This population tends to be elderly but also includes financially impaired citizens. Bottom line — [we] are at least 30 years away from a nation that has grown up using Internet to read the news. To do away with an affordable, non-electronic media is a form of social injustice.”

Yet, I realize this country is still constantly moving forward in the technology sense, and many people now turn to the Internet for their news.

Important info about late blight

W

e have been having a lot of late blight questions this year. One important question many people are asking is “Is it safe to eat a tomato infected with late blight?” Here is a very informative and important answer to the question: Yes, the unaffected parts probably are safe to eat. The conclusion unaffected tissue is safe to consume if diseased sections are adequately removed is based on several points. This pathogen does not produce a toxin that can make people sick, as a few plant pathogens can do. Plant pathogens cannot infect people. No food safety issues have been found with other diseases that affect tomato fruit or potato tubers.

Late blight appears to be like other more common diseases, in that these do not appear to affect plant tissue beyond the area of infection. Many home gardeners often cut off diseased tissue rather than throw out the entire fruit or tuber having found the healthy appearing part of these to taste fine. To date, this practice has not been associated with any human health issues.

Diseases like late blight are not considered a health concern for commercial tomato processing. Fruits are sorted to remove affected ones, but this is because of the impact on fruit quality.

For home canning, only disease-free, preferably vine-ripened, firm tomatoes are recommended in the USDA Complete Guide

to Home Canning because fungal pathogens may raise tissue pH (which has been supported by recent studies) and thereby allow growth of potentially harmful microorganisms, such as Salmonella. Deterioration can occur quickly after infection; therefore, affected tomatoes and potatoes should be salvaged and consumed right away.

The school began collaborating with Balmages in the spring of 2008 after school band director Susan Nystoriak reached out to the composer through his Web site, www.brianbalmages .com. Nystoriak said she chose Balmages because the elementary band has performed many of his pieces in the past.

“They’ve always been my students’ favorites,” she said. “He writes really well for elementary bands.”

Upon sending Balmages an e-mail, it didn’t take long for him to get back to her, said Nystoriak.

“I expected to hear a response, but I didn’t expect that it would work out in the timeframe that we were looking to do something,” she said.

That was because the school was looking to have the children perform the new piece in the spring of 2009, she said.

“He gathered information about the district, asked me what level of music I was hoping for him to write,” said Nystoriak.

“And, he was able to complete the composition by January.”

“He just had this idea in his head of a supernova going off and he kind of wrote the song to depict these exploding stars in the universe,” she continued. “And, the music is very depictive of that.”

Balmages visited the school in May, spending two days with students, attending a band rehearsal and taking questions from band students. The composer also attended a school band concert that month, during which the students performed the world premiere of his song. He addressed the audience, stating he was most impressed with the school and community support of creating the song for the students.

“The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about his favorite music, that which inspired him to become a musician, and his overall inspiration for writing ‘Starsplitter Fanfare,’” said Marin. “Hopefully, what the kids got out of this adventure was something that could one day help some of them pursue something in the arts.”

Though Nystoriak said she was already happy for the students to have a specially-produced composition, she said she was even more excited when learning of the recognition in the J.W. Pepper Catalog, which now make the sheet music for the song available to the public.

“It’s one of the pieces they deem to be the best music for that level,” explained Nystoriak. “There’s probably only eight or 10 pieces at that level that made the cut for Editor ’s Choice. It’s

Local schools admit non-resident students to their schools and charge tuition. Some school districts have discussed how much should be charged. The answer is simple.

Public schools should not accept students from other districts. Their mission is to educate the students of their own district, not students from elsewhere. Public schools serve their own demographic, not the demographic of other districts.

If public schools focused on their public, then tuition would be a moot point.

If a school district begins to reap benefits from paying students from other districts, would that income begin to affect decisions being made for students of their own public?

Even if public schools charge tuition, do we not end up with a public school funding private education?

If public school accept students from other districts, does that not set up the potential for competition among public school districts, a type of competition that school districts have fought against?

Should a public school board of education be discussing how to lower tuition to make the school more attractive to others or how to fill those empty seats? Isn’t the filling of seats in a public school a matter of the birth rate rather than the marketing of the school? Likewise, if a public school accepts students from another public school, is that not robbing students and creating empty seats in another school district?

Public schools need to be concerned about their own public not about the students from elsewhere. If public schools want to participate in the recruiting game to attract students from elsewhere, then let them become private. The educational voucher solution for funding would be a perfect alternative. Do public schools really want the competition?

Chazy Youth Hockey.

“It’s a great cause; it’s something I care a lot about,” said Bell.

According to Amy House, a founding member of the Scotts’ Memorial Rink — the site of Chazy Youth Hockey — the organization has found the contributions from Bell have been “an asset to the rink.”

“That’s quite a bit of money and we’ve been able to do a lot of renovations at the rink,” House explained.

“Just a lot of projects that need to be done.”

“The Bells are really going above and beyond,” she added.

Bell’s Corn Maze will have two more fright nights this season. This Saturday, Oct. 10, proceeds from the day will benefit the Chazy Central Rural School girls hockey team, with the team haunting the maze at night. The last one will be Saturday, Oct. 24, with proceeds benefitting the Girl Scouts.

The eight-acre maze is in the pattern of four spiders and a cobweb, designed

by Bell’s 12-year-old daughter.

The corn maze, located at 499 Ratta Road, is open Fridays from 5-9 p.m., Saturdays from 12-9 p.m., and Sundays from 12-5 p.m., through Nov. 1.

Bechard completed an intensive, eightweek program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Bright kites The Clinton County Advocacy and Resource Center hosted its second annual Fall Festival at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Morrisonville Oct. 3, hosting a variety of activities for families. Tournament From page 1 Soccer Team. “[CCYB] called and said that Brandon could no longer play on the team.”

However, Hurlburt had been playing and practicing alongside his teammates since August, and they were disappointed to find out he wouldn’t be on the team any longer.

“The team said that they wanted to play with him one more time,” explained Guay. “So, in order for him to play we had to do it non-youth.”

The plan Guay and her team came up with was the Bantam Cougar Classic, where local bantam teams will “play for the community.”

Guay explained the team decided they wanted to have a tournament where they could give back to the community, as the community is always giving to them.

The tournament will put local bantam soccer teams against one another, with the winner receiving a trophy, and all other teams receiving a smaller trophy. People may also put together their own team, with players in the bantam age range. However, in order for teams to participate, each player must bring a nonperishable food item to be donated to one of the local food shelves — in Mooers, Rouses Point and Champlain.

Volunteers have also been working together to have a bake sale, local businesses have donated gift certificates which will be raffled off, and there will be a 50-50 drawing. All proceeds will be split amongst the food shelves.

When Hurlburt was notified he was unable to continue playing in bantam soccer games, he was “a little upset.”

“I just wanted to play,” said Hurlburt.

But, when Guay notified him he could play his last game during the tournament he became “excited”

again.

“It means a lot. I didn’t think I was going to be able to play, but now I can,” he said.

After the tournament, Hurlburt plans to continue practicing with the team, to stay in shape for next year, where he hopes to make the varsity soccer team at Northeastern Clinton Central School.

For now, though, he suggests people “just show up for the tournament.”

“That’ll be good,” he said.

According to Guay, she hopes to continue the tournament in the future.

“If it’s successful this year ... we’re going to do it every year,” she said.

“We’re going to do it for local organizations in the area.”

New blog aims to provide forum for outdoor topics B

y the time you read this I will have a new blog setup on our Web site designed to allow outdoorsmen an opportunity to exchange stories and ideas.

I hope to give some insight into what is and isn’t working for me at any given time and perhaps start a dialogue with others who enjoy the outdoor pursuits as much as I do.

I definitely don’t profess to know it all, and would love to learn new hunting and fishing practices that have proven successful, so feel free to go to www.denpubs.com and drop me a line.

I also strongly encourage questions — from whether the ice is gone from a particular pond to where heritage strains of brookies have been stocked to the politics behind proposed state environmental policies. If I can’t answer you I’ll do my best to research an answer — or I’ll just make it up. (Kidding, of course).

Hopefully, if I can’t answer it, one of our bloggers can. As I said, I don’t profess to know it all, but there is power in numbers. Combine our collective experience and we will all be better for it.

I plan to share some of our on-line banter in future columns.

Speaking of great photos, Jim Hotaling from the Willsboro Fish and Game submitted a picture of the club’s youth pheasant hunt that took place Sept. 26. The hunt is open to youth ages 12-15 and gives young hunters an opportunity to experience some pheasant hunting action behind experienced dogs and their handlers. Another is planned for Oct. 11. Hunter’s screening The annual hunter ’s health screening which is offered freeof-charge to anyone who shows up with his or her 2009 hunting license will take place this year on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5-7 p.m.

The screening is designed to give hunters a review of their overall health before they exert themselves in the woods in search of deer.

The health clinic will assess blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and oxygen levels. Hospital staff will also check vision, height and weight, providing an overall health picture.

Participants will also have an EKG reading taken, which measures heart health. A team of nurses and lab staff, led by Dr. Moisan, will conduct the health screening. They will then be able to discuss concerns and offer advice.

The hospital lobby will be filled with information related to hunting. There will be a representative from the Sheriff’s Department offering free gun locks and the state Department of Conservation will be on-hand to answer questions. There will be safety information, recipes, prize drawings and snacks.

Salerno brothers Tony and Pat will also be on hand to answer questions and offer hunting tips. The Salerno family has produced a number of hunting videos and has been featured

in national publications.

Ward Lumber to host 17th annual buck contest Ward Lumber Company is once again hosting its annual buck contest, though this year they have added a prize drawn at random for any size buck entered.

Anyone is eligible and need only take their buck to Ward Lumber in Jay during business hours to have it weighed and entered. Business hours are Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

A winner in each category will be selected after Dec. 5. Each winner will each receive a $100 Ward Lumber Gift Card.

All hunters entering will be photographed with their bucks, and if you supply an e-mail address, they will e-mail the photo to you. All contestants will also receive a baseball cap just for entering.
