Benefit concert for Roy Hurd this Sunday

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When Roy Hurd lost his home in Lake Clear to a devastating fire in July, he lost everything.

“It’s been kind of crazy,” said Hurd, a wellknown local singer and songwriter and Redford native. “Some days, it feels like things are okay and getting back to normal and other times it kind of hits me when I go to reach for something we don’t have anymore or we think about something we lost that we hadn’t thought about.

Things with strong emotional connections to history or the people we’ve known over the years.”

with Hurd and Kohanski when they learned of the tragedy.

“We were out to eat and had just finished our meal and Roy’s phone rang,” recalled Hartnett.

“He didn’t answer it because he didn’t recognize the number. It rang again and he still didn’t answer it. Then, it rang a third time and I said, ‘Roy, maybe you better pick it up. It could be an emergency.’”

Little did Hartnett know, he was right. The call ended up being from one of Hurd’s neighbors telling him his house was on fire.

“It was just terrible,” Hartnett said of the news.

Not long after, Hartnett rallied many of Hurd’s musician friends to put together a concert for Hurd and his wife, both to entertain them and to help them raise money for any things they may need that their insurance doesn’t cover.

“I just felt, with Roy being a musician, it was only fitting the music community pull together to do a benefit concert,” said Hartnett.

It didn’t take long for more than a dozen acts to come together.

“It’s just indicative of the love people have for Roy,” said Hartnett. “The great thing is it’s not going to be just a benefit, it’s going to be a re-

Hurd and his wife, Amy Kohanski, weren’t home at the time of the fire, which is something Hurd is extremely thankful for, he said. And, out of tragedy, Hurd said he gained a newfound appreciation for “what’s important.”

“We’re fortunate no one was home at the time.

Something like this helps you understand what’s important and really makes you thankful for friends and family,” said Hurd.

That’s the focus of a new song born from the loss he and his wife suffered, said Hurd, he titled “The More Permanent Things.”

“Those are the things I set my heart on because the other things are not permanent at all,” said Hurd, who is now living with his wife in an apartment they’ve rented in Saranac Lake.

Though Hurd’s home was insured there are still some things that will be irreplaceable, like keepsakes and even a special edition Fender guitar that was given to him as a gift.

Hurd said he was touched when he learned so many people plan to turn out to offer their support.

“I’ve written and sing songs about the unique beauty of this region and the people around here for decades,” said Hurd, “but, to be on the receiving end of such kindness and such support is overwhelming.”

The benefit concert will be held this Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Krazy Horse Saloon, 14 Margaret St., this Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Blind Pig Blues Band, Celia Evans, Crossing North, Eat. Sleep.

Golf tournament north of the border marks 15 years Event honors man known for commitment to community

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com HEMMINGFORD, Que. — The Alain Fortin Foundation is something Cheryl Fortin wishes would never have to have been established, but it’s an organization that’s done much good in the Hemmingford community for the past 15 years.

The foundation was named after her brotherin-law whose life was lost in a tragic boating accident on Lake Champlain in 1995. However, rather than let his memory fade, his family decided to establish the foundation with a purpose of helping his hometown of Hemmingford.

“Alain was very interested in helping the young and the old,” said Fortin. “The extremes of the community. The year before he died, he was actually standing outside — and it was one of the worst winter days — ringing the bell for

the Salvation Army in Hemmingford on a blustery, wintry day. We want to continue to carry forward things he’s done in the past like that.”

The main way Alain’s family has been able to do that has been to host a special golf tournament each year at the Hemmingford Golf Club. The one-club tournament — which challenges golfers to use one golf club throughout the 18-hole match — was the kind of game Alain enjoyed, said Fortin.

“Alain would get together with friends and they would play with one club the entire game and see how well they did,” recalled Fortin. “It was just for fun.”

“I’ve played it that way a few times and it’s definitely a challenge,” she added, laughing.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it in the end,” she said.

Over the past fourteen years, the Alain Fortin Foundation has raised nearly $60,000 for a variety of causes. The tournament has helped Hemmingford’s Christmas Basket Fund, which supplies underprivileged families in the community with food and gifts during the holidays, and even helped the “Don’t Sit Home Alone Christmas Eve Supper” at the Witsend Resto Pub provide nearly 40 people with a Christmas dinner and gifts.

The generosity of the foundation is also felt yearround in donations made to local schools, sports teams, and the Guides and Scouts of Hemmingford.

Considering a new browser Incontinence and caregiving

A

sk any computer user to characterize their top three computer activities and I bet many users will include surfing the Web as a top activity. The Web browser has become arguably the most used application for many users. Consider also that many of us have a favorite browser that is both familiar and comfortable so we stay loyal to it without usually considering other browsers.

With the newest Web protocol family, HTML Version 5, bringing significant change to the way browsers interpret Internet content, many users may soon want a browser that supports the new version.

All browsers will eventually support version 5, but when? If keeping market share is important to the browser maker quick action is necessary.

Currently, Internet Explorer owns 61.2 percent of the browser market, which is great news for Microsoft; the bad news is the number has been steadily declining each month. The nearest competitor, according to NetApplications, is Mozilla's Firefox with almost a quarter of the market and with strong competition from other browsers further decline is expected.

But, Microsoft is not shying away from this very important market. Conversely, they have worked hard to update and release a state-of-the-art browser that not only will keep current users happy it may bring users back into the IE fold. The result of the effort is the next implementation of Internet Explorer, version 9, that is expected to work well with HTML 5.

The beta launch date was Sept. 15 and open to anyone running 32 or 64-bit versions of Vista or Windows 7. XP users have been excluded from beta testing.

ne of the biggest issues that confront caregivers is their loved ones’ incontinence.

There are two types of incontinence — urinary, which is the loss of bladder control, and bowel, which is the involuntary loss of fecal matter.

There are many causes of incontinence — surgeries, infections, the aging process, prescription drugs such as narcotics, or Alzheimer ’s disease, to name a few. The National Association for Continence has an informative Web site that gives caregivers and care receivers tips on how to prevent or cope with incontinence. Here are a few: • Research appropriate undergarments for care receivers. If the incontinence problem is minor and involves some urine leakage, feminine protection products may be adequate. If the incontinence problem is more severe, there are several brands of adult undergarments that are relatively discreet and effective. In addition, it may be advisable to purchase disposable mattress pads for nighttime.

• Plan on frequent trips to the rest room, especially if their intake of fluids is high.

• Some cognitively impaired folks are unable to verbally express their need to void their bladders so caregivers will need to watch for signs in their body language (agitation,

fidgeting, pulling at clothing) that communicate the need to go.

• Develop a routine with the care receiver. Help them to the rest room upon awakening, during the day, and immediately before bedtime.

• Practice patience. If an accident occurs, this may be very embarrassing to the care receiver. Remember that they are not doing this on purpose and getting angry will only make them feel worse.

• Limit fluid intake before bedtime or naptime.

• Have nightlights available in hallways and bathrooms so care receivers can easily find their way in the darkness. If they awaken to a too-dark environment they may be too anxious to attempt to reach the bathroom in time.

ight now, local garden centers are full of mums, or chrysanthemums, covered with flowers in a wide variety of colors, including white, off-white, yellow, gold, bronze, red, burgundy, pink, lavender and purple. Besides the wide range of colors, these late season flowers can grow to be 2-3 feet high, depending on the cultivar and growing conditions.

Chrysanthemums are usually considered herbaceous perennials. However, the plants need to be planted at least six weeks before the first killing frost and should be the correct cultivar to grow in zones 3 or 4. The local county Cooperative Extension offices can offer advice on the correct cultivars for our area.

Potted chrysanthemum flowers are sold by the millions at nurseries in fall because they've become a staple for outdoor fall decorating. But, these plants are grown for their fall display and are not necessarily cultivars meant to be grown as perennials in the North Country. Secondly, these plants are often ready for sale during the fall. Since the mums should be planted at least 6 weeks before the killing frost, there is not enough time to allow these plants be become established before the frost and upcoming winter. Therefore, the best time to plant mums that you would like to have as perennials, spring is the best time to plant these flowers.

When planting mums you would like to establish as a perennial, plant chrysanthemum flowers in full sun and well-drained soil, enriched by compost. Chrysanthemums are photoperiodic, meaning they bloom in response to the shorter days and longer nights experienced (in the Northern Hemispere) in fall. Therefore, do not plant chrysanthemum flowers near street lights or nightlights: the artifi-

cial lighting may wreak havoc with the chrysanthemums' cycle. Also, don't overcrowd chrysanthemums: good air circulation reduces the chance of disease.

Pinching chrysanthemums yields compact, bushy plants with more blooms. Pinching simply means removing the tips of new growth, thereby stimulating the chrysanthemums to send out side-shoots. Start in the spring when the new growth has reached 4-6 in length. Thereafter, every 2-3 weeks, pinch the center out of any more growth when it reaches 6 . But, stop pinching chrysanthemums in June, or else bud formation won't occur soon enough to ensure flowering.

The hardy mums sold in the garden centers this time of year are a beautiful addition to any fall landscape. And, the proper cultivars of mums planted in the spring, properly watered and fertilized, and pinched can add beauty to the landscape year after year.

Catholic Daughters harvest dinner marks 50th anniversary

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ELLENBURG — Catholic Daughters Court Little Rose will celebrate their 50th annual harvest dinner this Sunday, Sept. 26, marking their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Court Little Rose began Nov. 13, 1938, with 50 charter members. According to their book which chronicles the first 35 years of the court, the Catholic Daughters of America was originally founded by the Knights of Columbus in 1903 and has grown from 60 members to hundreds of thousands.

“The purpose of the Catholic Daughters are exclusively religious, charitable, social and educational,” said member of 67 years and past regent Yvonne Taylor.

Serving national and state charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Mission of Hope, and the Christmas Bureau, as well as local funds such as Hometown Cable and paying for fuel for St. Edmund’s Church, along with numerous others, the court works hard every year to raise as much money as they can.

“It seems like yesterday that we started our harvest dinner,” said Taylor. “And Veronica Franklin is the one that thought of it and she said ‘Let’s do it’ and we did it under her supervision. If it wasn’t for our harvest dinner, we wouldn’t do [all that we do].”

The members of the court have kept detailed scrapbooks and yearbooks which chronicle the years since their inception, including one hand-written scrap piece of paper which states the money raised during the first

harvest dinner.

“At our first harvest dinner, we had served … 448,” Taylor read from the piece of paper. “The big ticket brought in $630.50. Bingo brought in $63.75. The fish pond brought in $12.75. And then they sold chances on a table cloth and that brought $16.75. Fancy Booth brought in $76.75. They cleared $244.28 on the dinner.”

With the little bit of money raised, Taylor said the prep work was much more difficult than today.

“We cooked on an old black stove. No sink. You would get hot water in milk cans from the milk station and then they would bring hot water and cold water … and carry it up all those stairs,” recalled Taylor. “They think it’s a lot of work today. No, it’s a cinch today compared to then.”

And a lot more money is brought in as well, with members estimating more than $5,000 is brought in each year.

This year ’s harvest dinner, which will be held at St. Edmund’s Church from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., will also include some of the original fundraisers such as the Big Ticket Raffle, and Fancy Booth. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children, and free for children younger than 5. Take-outs are also available by calling 594-3121.

The court is also working on creating a recipe book as another fundraiser. People can submit their original recipes to regent Ann Landry at 121 Bombard Road, Ellenburg N.Y. 12934.

“If they have recipes of their mothers or grandmothers or aunts who have passed and they want to put it in memory of, we can do that,” said Landry. “We’d like to have it done and available for mother ’s day.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year ...

I

broke out a pair of SmartWool socks this morning, pulled on a flannel shirt and could see my breath as I strolled to check the mailbox.

God, I love fall.

I feel sorry for folks who live south of the Mason-Dixon Line. They may get to golf year-round, but I’ll take the changing colors, the feel of a woodstove on a crisp autumn day and the deer season opener over that any day.

Speaking of deer season, early archery begins Monday with last year ’s tag. Monday is also my son, Harrison’s 10th birthday — and, as he keeps reminding me, “I’ll be old enough to hunt when I’m 10.”

Unfortunately, the law says otherwise, even though Harrison would probably be a more competent hunter at 10 than many adults I know.

Either way, I hope to immerse him as much as possible this year. Introducing a kid to the outdoors at a young age is hugely important — it is such a healthy alternative to the computer/video/television world with which they are inundated.

Plus it might just give him an incentive not to move south following graduation.

Keeping track On another note, the Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership is hosting a really cool event the evening of Oct. 6 in Floral Hall at the Essex County Fairgrounds.

The event — known as “Keeping Track Wildlife” — will feature Susan Morse, a nationally-recognized naturalist and habitat specialist who will offer a hands-on display of wild animal pelts, skulls, feet, track molds and other material along with a slide show of her outstanding wildlife photography.

The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. and the suggested donation is $2 per person or $5 for a family.

It is not the first time Morse has visited Westport offering her photography and expertise in identifying animals and the signs they leave behind.

Chris Maron, executive director of the Conservation Partnership, said Morse visited nearly a decade ago and drew a large audience.

“When she was here in 2001, we had an overflow audience of over 260 people who

enjoyed seeing the furs and discovering ways to find signs of animal activity,” Maron said. “They especially liked her beautiful pictures and listening to stories illustrating an extensive knowledge and sometimes controversial ideas about wildlife.”

Westport naturalist and guide Elizabeth Lee echoed Maron’s comments.

“The Keeping Track Wildlife Event gives people, especially families, an opportunity to enjoy an educational and inspiring evening,” Lee said. “Full-time residents, visitors, loggers, hikers, hunters, farmers, teachers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the outdoors will appreciate learning more about the Champlain Valley’s wildlife.”

Maron said the program was made possible with help from the Northeast Wilderness Trust, the Adirondack Council, Champlain National Bank, Dogwood Bread Company, and Elizabeth Lee. For more information on Keeping Track visit www.keepingtrack.org.

Down syndrome doesn’t mean defeat, says Gaffney Motivational speaker demonstrates point by swimming across Lake Champlain

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Karen Gaffney has always believed there’s nothing she can’t do. Now, she can add swimming across Lake Champlain to her list of achievements.

Despite being born with Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder which affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone, Gaffney has challenged herself to show people living with Down syndrome are able to do many of the same things people without the condition can do. Her latest evidence came as she stepped upon the shore of Plattsburgh City Beach Sept. 18, after swimming more than 8.5 miles across Lake Champlain from South Hero, Vt., adding to her list of completed aquatic challenges that includes swimming across Lake Tahoe, Boston Harbor and the English Channel.

“It was something new and different and I love doing something new and challenging,” said the 39-year-old Gaffney, who also suffers from hip dysplasia.

Escorted across the lake by a team of pacers — swimming alongside her and on kayak, boat and jet skis — Gaffney completed her personal challenge in less than six hours. However, it was an easier challenge than her lifelong battle to overcome the feeling of being different, she said.

When she addressed a crowd of more than 1,200 people the following day at Melissa L. Penfield Park, during the 13th annual Buddy Walk, Gaffney spoke about how much more of a challenge living with Down syndrome can be.

“Classrooms, school hallways, cafeterias and gyms can be pretty lonely places for people like me. Once we’re all out of school it can be even lonelier,” she said.

“I’d like to sit at a table in a cafeteria and have others sit down next to me rather than pass me by or get up when I sit down. I would like to look up and see a friendly smile rather than look up and see someone look away.”

Though acceptance and understanding of people living with Down syndrome has grown, there is still stigma in the world and ignorance of the ability of someone with the disorder. That’s one of the reasons Cindy Rotz organizes the Buddy Walk each year with her husband, Tracy, in honor of their son, Brett, who has Down syndrome. The Rotzes are working to break down the negative barriers that stand in the way of people like their son, Gaffney, and countless others.

“We want everyone to see their abilities, not their disabilities,” said Cindy Rotz. “It’s important we bring people like Karen in to see all the great things people with Down syndrome are able to do. Everyone can learn from her.”

“What Karen does shows people if you put your mind to something and you work hard, regardless of who you are or what you have or don’t have, you can persevere if you put the work in,” said Tracy Rotz. “She’s done a ton for our walk and hopefully she’s brought more attention [to Down syndrome] and has given them more understanding.”

The most important message Gaffney wanted people to take home was physical differences many often associate with Down syndrome don’t define what someone with Down syndrom can do or who they are, she said.

“I know on the outside we look different, we talk differently, we walk differently. But, on the inside, we’re more like you,” Gaffney told the crowd. “We want the same things you do. We want good friends. We want to belong. Just taking a seat next to me can make a big difference.”

“We all want to have friends to share things with, learn things from and blame things on,” she added, laughing. “So, you see, we are probably more alike than we are different.”

Certain exercises help your balance O

ften neglected, but very important, are the addition of balancing exercises into your workout program.

They are very simple and can be done at anytime. The inclusion of balance exercises can help you maintain your balance — and confidence — at any age. They can also help prevent falls and improve your coordination. For older adults, balance exercises can promote independence.

Nearly any activity that keeps you on your feet and moving, such as walking, can help you maintain good balance. You can also include balance exercises in your daily routine. I often encourage my clients who need to work on balance to fit balancing exercises into there everyday activities, for example, standing on one foot while talking on the phone, or doing dishes. You can even practice your balancing exercises while watching TV. A simple balance exercise can include standing on one foot and holding it for 2-30 seconds on each leg. You can stand near a chair for added support if needed.

For a more advanced balance exercise, try this single leg hip rotation exercise:

Start 1. Stand with feet straight and hip-width apart.

2. Lift chest and tuck chin.

Movement 3. Draw-in belly button and squeeze butt muscles.

4. Balance on one leg and lift other until knee is at waist level.

5. Rotating at hip, bring lifted leg toward side of body then back to front; hold each point two seconds.

6. Return to start.

Train station celebrates 100th anniversary

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — Anything that has been around for a century is bound to have quite a history. The current Station Café and Gifts is one such case.

Originally built in 1910, the former Delaware and Hudson Railway building was in operation until the mid-1960s, with the building’s creator, William H. Miner, its number one patron for many years.

“He traveled all the time,” explained Dr. Joseph Burke, author of the biography “William H. Miner: The Man and the Myth.”

Burke explained that, every Sunday, Miner would travel in on the morning train, go to church with his wife, Alice, work on the farm, and catch the train back to New York City that night.

“On one occasion, he came in on Sunday … and 25 minutes before he was to catch the train, he said to Alice, ‘Would you like to come to New York with me?’” explained Burke. “And, she says in her diary, ‘It took me only 25 minutes to get ready for a week in New York City.’”

Today, the building is owned by Carolyn Tetreault, who purchased it in 2007.

“My husband remembers this being a teen center in the late 70s, and I think the American Legion owned it then,” said Tetreault.

However, Tetreault estimates in the mid1980s is when its next owner took over, using it primarily for storage space.

“He bought the property because he didn’t want kids coming and messing around with the property,” she explained. “He remembered playing here as a kid and he’s 80-something now.”

When Tetreault noticed the building, she knew she wanted to buy it.

“I thought the building was really cute and historic and I was like, ‘What if somebody tears it down like they did the school?’”

Once Tetreault began digging into the building’s history, she noticed something interesting about it.

“When I started the business, I noticed that it was built in 1910 and I was like, ‘2010, we’ve got to do something.”

Much to Tetreault and Burke’s surprise, no documents could be found as to the exact day the building was originally opened, so Tetreault had a century celebration Sept. 18, with music, wine tastings, a treasure hunt, and giveaways.

Burke was also on hand with copies of Miner ’s biography and to share the buildings history with visitors.

“The great thing about Carolyn doing this is everything gets torn down,” said Burke. “We really need this preserved, what we have.”

Consumers encouraged to shop locally this Saturday

I

t’s been said the best way to help the economy is often to shop locally. This idea has sparked a campaign known as $25 on the

25th.

The main goal of the campaign is to get people to spend at least $25 in a locally shop or restaurant this Saturday, Sept. 25.

The campaign originally began with the New York Press Association in an effort to “create some excitement in downtowns across the state,” according to NYPA executive director Michelle Rea. “Essentially the publishers came to the board and talked about how downtown merchants and Main Street merchants have been really suffering for quite some time and they felt the newspapers should do something,” said Rea. “To make citi-

zens aware of how vital the role is that downtown merchants play in distinguishing communities from one another.”

Rea explained NYPA felt that by newspapers banding together across the state, there would be more publicity. To help spread the word, they teamed up with the New York State Economic Development Council and the New York State Conference of Mayors to get the campaign up and running.

“Statistically, it’s proven that if the local residents support local businesses that there is a benefit to the community and to the businesses,” said Plattsburgh Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak. “I believe that the efforts by the local business community deserves as much support as possible by the residents of the city of Plattsburgh and I strongly urge and hope that local residents support the local merchants as much as possible on the 25th and continue to support them through-

out the year.”

NYSEDC executive director Brian McMahon explained shopping local actually has numerous benefits.

“When we spend money in our community it comes back to us in the form of increased sales tax dollars, which get reinvested back into the community,” said McMahon. “But, more importantly … I think it reintroduces and reacquaints the community with the quality and diversity of retail establishments within their community.”

The diversity of the establishments is what Rea considers another important aspect of the campaign.

“If we were all just big areas plastered with big box stores and chain restaurants, Plattsburgh wouldn’t be any different than Albany, wouldn’t be any different than Syracuse,” she said. “A unique brand of merchandising and menus and décor is what sets us each apart from one another.”

Economically, Rea broke down the difference between money being spent at local merchants, compared to big box stores.

“If a person or a family spends $100 a month with local merchants, $45 of that $100 stays local, circulating locally,” she explained. “If that same family spends $100 with a big box store, $14 of those dollars stay local. So, the impact for not only the merchants themselves, but also the municipal areas, in terms of payroll dollars recirculating and whatnot, it’s huge, it’s really significant.

Support your village.”

“We lose sales tax if you don’t shop here,” he added. “The state loses, we lose, everybody loses. When you shop on-line there’s no sales tax.”

Rea said if people show enough support for the project, NYPA hopes to have the campaign happen more than once a year.

“People need to remember that if you don’t want those stores to go missing or those restaurants to go missing, you need to support them,” she said.

Middle school teacher earns national recognition

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — The efforts of a teacher in the Beekmantown Central School District have not gone unnoticed.

Sixth grade science teacher Colleen Pandolph of Peru has been selected as a finalist from New York State for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Pandolph, who was nominated by former Beekmantown Middle School principal Sue Coonrod, was selected by a state selection committee of her peers.

The news was a pleasant surprise, said Pandolph, who has been teaching for the school district for the past nine years.

“It’s quite an honor,” said the Vermontville native and State University of New York at Plattsburgh graduate, “but I would rather bring recognition to the school than myself. I have great colleagues, a great team of teachers I work with at the sixth grade level. The entire middle school is supportive.”

Principal James Knight said he is proud of Pandolph’s accomplishment and the recognition which demonstrates the caliber of teaching staff within the school district.

“Colleen is a perfect candidate for this level of recognition, due to her humble nature a dedication to students,” said Knight.

“I am confident that an award of this magnitude is not something she ever sought after as an educator, but it is the recognition she deserves as a teacher of high quality.”

Knight went on to say Beekmantown Middle School benefits from the Pandolph’s recognition by “allowing the spotlight to be drawn to one of its staff members who is a true representation of the entire staff as a whole.”

Pandolph’s nomination will be reviewed by a national selection committee in Washington, D.C. The committee will determine the winner of the Presidential Award this winter.

Fred Abare, 87 LARGO, Fla. — Fred Abare, 87, formerly of Rouses Point, died Sept. 11, 2010. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Abare is survived by his wife, Mabel, and daughter, Audrey Snow, as well as 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

“We’re so grateful to our community for raising $231,000 for cancer research,” said Berry, who noted that amount exceeded the committee’s goal by $21,000.
