PLATTSBURGH — The annual Plattsburgh Heart Walk is one week away, and it’s one day Julie M. Rowe has circled on her calendar well in advance. The 43-year-old Ellenburg Depot resident has been busily collecting sponsorships for her participation in the walk, scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 26. Currently, Rowe is the top individual fundraiser, collecting more than $3,600 and surpassing her fundraising goal of $2,000 nearly two times over. Rowe began her participation in the Plattsburgh Heart Walk four years ago as a member of the Wyeth Research - Chazy Team, of which she serves as captain today. Though she has never suffered from a heart condition, when Rowe began her involvement, it was because she simply wanted to give back to the community. “Each time I heard of an individual that had suffered a heart attack or stroke, or passed at a

ROUSES POINT — Fort Montgomery has received its due. The Civil War-era fortification was the center of attention last weekend as the Preservation League of New York State hosted Fort Montgomery Days in conjunction with the Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society, America’s Historic Lakes, Powertex and the property's owners, Stephen and Victor Podd. Several state and local dignitaries were in attendance for the event, including former Clinton County Legislator Celine R. Paquette, who serves as the vice chairperson of the HudsonFulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission. Paquette commended the

Author names character in book after Chazy youth Derek Drake lands minor role in ‘Touchdown Trouble’ By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAZY — One local youth made such an impression on an author, he’s become a character in his latest book. Derek Drake, a seventh grade student at Chazy Central Rural School, has a minor character named after him in children’s sports fiction author Fred Bowen’s new book, “Touchdown Trouble.” The story of Drake’s inclusion in the book dates back to last September, when Drake wrote a
letter to Bowen as part of an assignment in Sonya Lambert’s sixth grade class. In his letter, Drake wrote what he thought of Bowen’s book, “Winner Takes All,” the fictional story of a young boy on a baseball team named Kyle who fakes a catch which leads to his team winning the league championship. “The book made me think about how I would react if I were in a situation like Kyle’s,” Drake wrote in his letter. “I understand that because Kyle made the catch behind the wall and nobody probably saw him, it was
tempting for him to lie.” After reading Bowen’s book, Drake wrote he will “always tell the truth.” The words in Drake’s letter were moving enough for Bowen to not only name a character in his new book after him, but to acknowledge him in a speech as well. Though Bowen is an author and children’s sports columnist for the Washington Post, he was also an attorney for the federal government for 30 years. And, in his retirement party last September, shortly af-
