PLATTSBURGH — Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County is playing games.

To help raise money for the volunteer organization, LV-CC will host “Scrabble for Literacy” Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

According to LV-CC VISTA volunteer Arthur Menard, the idea originated with his wife, LV-CC director Norma Menard, who is a big fan of the word game.

“Also, we know that Literacy Volunteers of Essex and Franklin Counties have done this in the past,” Menard explained. “So, we’re kind of following in their footsteps as well.”

One difference LV-CC will have in comparison to LV-Essex/Franklin is they are partnering with two local libraries to promote the

“We bring them up to where they can function on the street, in the store,” said Menard.

“We do help them to be able to know what to say to a doctor. We help them with money, checking. A lot of things.”

To help continue the program, the Scrabble competition registration is a $20 tax-deductible donation. They will also accept donations from people who do not want to play, but want to donate.

The competition will pair players of similar abilities, and depending on the amount of players at each location, will have two to four players in a game.

Prizes will be given to players who score 50 points or more on a single play, and special prizes will be given to the first and second place finishers.

The Scrabble competition, is one Menard said will hopefully bring in much needed donations. “[The donations] would be going towards the general support of our program,” he explained. “I’m picturing [them going towards] materials for training and materials for students.”

Menard said many people may not realize exactly what LV-CC does, and who they help.

“We are a tutoring organization where we tutor one-on-one with adults who want to learn to read better,” he said. “Out of roughly 66,000 adults in Clinton County, roughly 8,000 either read or speak at a very low level.”

Stopping malware by USB

T

ech Republic had an interesting securityrelated article last week. The article, written by Chad Perrin, briefly described the chain of events that lead to a 2008 compromise of U.S. military network security by a foreign intelligence agency. It began on a laptop in the Middle East and ended at the U.S. Military Central Command Network; the medium of choice in the attack was a USB flash drive.

Perrin went on to offer some worthy tips on how to avoid the same fate.

In the early days of computers most malware entered the system by way of floppy disks. Floppy drives were ubiquitous and usually configured to be read first so using them to spread malware proved effective.

Today, malware is delivered mostly through the Internet, but USB flash drives can be just as dangerous as floppy disks once were as a method to spread malware.

Perrin’s first tip is to disable Autorun. In Windows XP, Autorun is enabled by default; Vista and Windows 7 default behavior is to prompt the user to allow Autorun. His next tip is to ban or severely limit flash drive use.

That way no infected drive will ever come

into contact with the system.

If flash drive use is necessary, a computer may be set up as a dedicated malware checker that should run a non-Windows operating system and not be connected to the regular network.

Blend the two methods of limiting flash drive use with a dedicated malware checker to achieve an even higher level of protection.

enny was abandoned and brought to the shelter with her brother, Jake. They were very distrustful of humans, but have come to understand there are good people who will care for them. They have been neutered and spayed, are up-to-date on vaccinations and FeLV/FIV negative.

Princess is a 9-year-old Peek-a-poo who is at our shelter looking for her forever home. She is also up-todate with routine shots and spayed.

Hamlet is a good looking young male domestic short hair kitty. He has been at the shelter for a while. Although playful, Hamlet prefers to be the only cat in your household.

Planting cool weather crops

I

t is hard to think about planting more vegetables at a time when fresh produce is so abundant in our garden, but late July and early September are good times to plant cool weather crops. Fall plants such as broccoli and cauliflower usually taste better when grown in the cooler weather, while others such as kale and Swiss chard reach their peak flavor after the first frost.

Right now many home gardeners, myself included, are busy canning, freezing, pickling, and finding homes for the plethora of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and zucchini.

While it is hard to think about anything in the garden beside the current bounty, we are quickly approaching the end of the planting time for fall vegetables.

Here in the North Country, crops such as cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts should have been planted at the end of July. Vegetables that are quick growing such as baby salad greens, radish, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard can be planted through the beginning of September. Peas should be planted in August for a fall crop.

As the fall season nears, protection from frost and freezing weather for these crops has

to be considered. One method is to cover the crops with floating row cover, old sheets, plastic sheeting, or mulch which will trap the radiated heat from the ground and raise the temperature enough to protect them from a light frost.

Some crops such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, potatoes, Swiss chard, Chinese cabbage and kale are not affected by frost or even moderate freezes and can be left in the garden until the hard freezes set in.

Root crops such as beets, carrots, parsnips and turnips can be re-mulched, left in the garden and dug up as needed.

After harvesting and while the weather is still pleasant, many chores can be accomplished in anticipation of spring and next year ’s garden. Cleaning up garden refuse, adding soil amendments to the garden, and making a planting plan for next year ’s garden while this year ’s garden is still fresh in your mind, are just three jobs to get out of the way.

his month I’d like to talk about the importance of learning notes on the fretboard. I played for years not knowing what notes I was playing and how scales are used to build chords and chord progressions. At first glance it might seem like a huge task but, in reality, there are only 11 notes that repeat themselves as you move up the fretboard.

Now, to memorize the notes there are a few different tricks. One is to start by finding all the A notes. From your open A, 5th string, open all the way up to the 12th fret on all strings. You’ll find there are only seven A notes. Not as many as you’d imagined, right?

For all notes, sharps and flats, or naturals, there are only six or seven notes on the fretboard up to the 12th fret. At the 12th fret it starts all over again. From the 6th string down your open strings are: E, A, D, G, B, E. And at the 12th fret, if you barre the fret you also have E, A, D, G, B, E. Memorizing your fretboard will also help you when building new chords.

Fire ravages local business

An early morning fire Sept. 3 created extensive damage at a building owned by Adrien and Sharon Dutil on State Route 22 in the hamlet of Sciota. The building housed the Dutils’ family business, D & D Meats, as well as two apartments and was connected to the Dutil’s family home. Reports state the fire started in a rear section of the store. The building was insured and the Dutils reportedly plan to rebuild.

trick is this — a note’s Octave, which is the same note but has a higher or lower sound is two frets higher, two strings down. For example, if you have your index finger on the 3rd fret of the low (6th) string you have a G. Use your ring finger and place it on your D string, 5th fret and now you have the G Octave. This will work on all the strings except your D string. To find the octaves on your B string you will have to move your ring finger up three frets instead of two. Using your pinky will be easier than using your ring finger. One note and one string at a time and soon you will know the whole fretboard. Practice is key.

School begins and summer's over I

n the Adirondacks, Labor Day weekend typically signals the end of the summer season.

Camps will be shuttered as kids return to school and the pace of life begins to slow down as memories of another long summer are recounted.

Last weekend, an abrupt turn in the weather pattern appears to have accelerated the seasonal timetable.

The air seemed crisper, the skies were clearer, the stars were brighter and a fresh snow briefly capped the High Peaks. Already, the hillsides are sporting a bit of autumn’s crimson, and the mellow yellows of early fall have overtaken the bogs and river corridors.

For four straight days, the local lakes and trails were crowded with visitors, as throngs of outdoor enthusiasts took to the woods and waters for one last outing. Long lines of vehicles were parked along the roadsides at trailheads and most of the area’s boat launches were filled to capacity.

The end of the summer season was official when the first big, yellow bus began scooping up kids from the local roadsides. Despite the warm weather yet to come, the clambakes, the waterskiing, the

issues, events, dates and important items to address.

Possibly the most important date to note is an extension of the public comment period for proposed management actions for the Moose River Plains Wild Forest. The Unit Management Plan seeks to reclassify 15,062 acres of the Moose River Plains Wild Forest (MRPWF) and to expand the West Canada Lake Wilderness Area (WCLWA).

After a series of public hearings that the DEC and the APA held on the proposed Unit Management Plan; it was determined, based on public input, that additional time was warranted for public comment.

The public comment period has now been extended to Sept. 17. Get involved and let your voice be heard!

I have received several letters regarding this issue, including one from Gary Lee, a retired Forest Ranger who spent a career covering the Moose River Plains.

In a nutshell, the new proposal seeks to reclassify a large portion of the current Moose River Plains’ 15,000+ acres of Wild Forest lands into the West Canada Lake Wilderness Area. If instituted, the plan would close many miles of roads

mountain climbing or any other signs of summer, the season is complete.

It is a time to move on, to button down house and home, to stack the firewood and prepare for the next round of play. Soon, the Sportsman’s High Holy Days of autumn will arrive. Bucks will again wander the woods and ducks will inhabit the wetlands as visions of big brook trout and spawning salmon begin to takeover our dreams.

While the actual physical changes of the seasons will likely be gradual, the spirit of autumn has already captured the minds of many sportsmen, and women.

Across the Adirondacks, the next few weeks will be a transition period of anticipation and preparation.

Summer camps will be closed, hunting camps reopened and the faces on Main Street will become mostly familiar, as the new season begins.

Early bear season opens Sept. 18.

Hunting and fishing licenses need to be renewed by Oct. 1, before the opening of deer season.

The UMP offers a prime example of the continual effort to make access to the Forest Preserve more difficult and to reduce the number of people that can utilize these lands.

When bikers, boaters, skiers, hunters, anglers, trappers and other traditional users are eliminated, who will be left to enjoy the land?

Something is obviously wrong, when the local Forest Ranger responsible for protecting these same lands for a quarter of a century, takes the time to complain about the plan.

Before decisions regarding wilderness designation in the Adirondacks are made in Albany or Ray Brook, the policy makers responsible for the decisions should be required to put their boots on the same ground. No longer should we permit “armchair outdoorsmen” (or women) to be trusted with crucial land use decisions, especially when they don’t have any actual experience with the land.

It is time for local concerns and

traditions to be incorporated into land use decisions. Local residents that want a voice in local decisions, must be heard. State police remind motorists school’s open, drive carefully Drivers should exercise additional caution in school zones, other areas with children RAYBROOK — New York State Police are once again reminding motorists to take extra caution when out and about now that school is in session.

State police support the New York State Automobile Association’s annual “School’s Open Drive Carefully” safety campaign by placing bumper stickers on all marked state police patrol vehicles. Each year, the AAA program helps to safeguard elementary school children during the critical back-to-school period.

es, it’s true, exercise does a body good, but it is also true that virtually any kind of exercise can reduce stress as well. Exercise improves your overall health and sense of wellbeing. Some of the direct stress reducing benefits you will see from exercising will be: Increased Endorphin Production — Endorphins are the feel-good neurotransmitters produced by the brain. Often referred to as a “runner ’s high,” other forms of exercise

such as a hike or playing soccer can contribute to the same feeling.

Exercise can be meditative — I often get this feeling after swimming laps in the pool. You are “in the moment” focusing on your form and breathing, therefore not giving into mindless thoughts and distractions from your day’s stresses. Your tensions will slowly dissipate leaving you with a clearer mind and more positive outlook.

Exercise can help to improve your mood — Regular exercise can

increase confidence and lower symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety. This can ease your levels of stress and give you a sense of control over your body and life.

How do I get started?

First, you’ll want to consult your doctor. Remember to gradually build up your program; you’ll be more likely to stick to it if you don’t overdo it in the beginning.

Children should be taught to use only the established route, and to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing in bad weather for maximum visibility and safety.

The New York State Police reminded motorists state law requires all vehicles to stop when meeting or overtaking school buses stopped, with red lights flashing, and to pick up or discharge passengers. Failure to obey this law is a dangerous violation that could result the loss of a young person’s life and a minimum fine of $250.

Hannah’s Hope awarded $250,000 grant Organization will continue to raise money for research

The nonprofit organization — whose mission is to eradicate giant axonal neuropathy (GAN), an inherited neurological disorder — has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. The highly-competitive grant is available on a monthly basis to qualifying organizations and is one Lori Sames, executive director of Hannah’s Hope Fund, wasn’t sure her organization would get.

“It’s quite a miracle when you consider the other organizations we were up against and the huge following they had,” said Sames, whose organization is named for her daughter, Hannah, who has the rare disorder.

Hannah’s Hope Fund had been competing against 1,231 other submissions in their cat-

egory for the Pepsi grant since Aug. 1, and was holding steady in the double-digit rankings until the second week of August. The organization began to rapidly move up the list, resting in the number four position until breaking into the top three in the final days of the month.

Sames attributes that to the hard push of Hannah’s Hope Fund supporters in their eleventh hour.

“We had been going full-speed for the last two weeks,” said the Beekmantown native. “It was nonstop, even going up to a complete stranger on their cell phone and asking if they’d send a text message vote for Hannah’s Hope Fund.”

In the final days of the competition, it was a tight three-way race between Hannah’s Hope Fund and CureJM, another nonprofit trying to raise awareness of juvenile myositis, and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, a nonprofit looking for a cure to a rare neurodevelopmental disorder.

On Aug. 31, Sames and Hannah’s Hope Fund supporters invaded busy intersections in the Capital District handing out voting instructions and asking people to vote before the midnight deadline.

“It was insanity,” said Sames.

That night, Hannah’s Hope Fund had slipped to number three. Considering only the top two projects in their category would receive funding, calls went out across the country to get people to place last-minute votes.

“Everyone immediately started calling their West Coast contacts trying to rally and get more people to vote,” said Sames. “It was a full-court press.”

When Sames and her husband, Matt, a Plattsburgh native, went to bed that night, the outcome of the competition was unclear.

The next day, however, Sames said she

woke to see the word “finalist” on the Hannah’s Hope Fund page for Pepsi Refresh Everything, later learning the organization had ranked number two in the end.

“When we went to sleep, the last thing I said to my husband was that you never know what tomorrow brings,” she said. “I had this feeling in my gut that we would have good news in the morning.”

“It was a miracle indicative of the miracle we’re going to pull off for these kids,” Sames added.

Hannah’s Hope Fund will now put the Pepsi Refresh Everything money toward clinical human trials of gene therapy to correct GAN. The overall cost of the trials is estimated at $1.3 million.

“We thank the North Country from the bottom of our hearts,” said Sames. “The help of the entire North Country, the entire Capital District, everyone, is what made this happen.”

Exhibits opens Friday ‘Fall Fun Fest’ Author Bill McKibben this Sunday to speak Tuesday PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, 23 Brinkerhoff St., will host a double opening reception Friday, Sept. 10, from 5-7 p.m.

Elizabeth Grades, a local artist born in Michigan, came to Plattsburgh to receive her bachelor ’s degree in fine arts from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 2006. Since her graduation, Elizabeth has been an active artist, showing her work in multiple venues in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

The regional exhibition features a wide range of entries from local artists from painting to ceramics to fabric art. Local judges this year will be Jackie Sabourin and Gail Kemp.

The reception and gallery are open to the public and all are welcome at the opening reception.

PLATTSBURGH — For anyone who may have been golfing at Bluff Point Golf Resort Aug. 18, you would probably have seen a game in full swing — but not one commonly seen on the course.

Eighteen-year-old Russell Izzo of Plattsburgh is a member of the local group of people who participate in the Lying Down Game, known as Team America.

“The Lying Down Game is actually a game where you lie down on the ground and ... the official rules on-line are that you have to include as many people as possible and it has to be as public as possible, with as many people standing around as possible,” Izzo explained.

The LDG is the brainchild of two men from the United Kingdom who began the Web site www.lyingdowngame.net to have people post their photos of the game in action.

The concept, which has now spread across the world, requires the palms of your hand be flag against your side, and the tips of your toes pointed toward the ground.

Izzo, who learned of the game from a friend from Canada, said the local group has only been

around for a matter of weeks and now is in friendly competition with the Canadian group, known as Team Canada.

The two teams now compete against one another to see who can capture the best photo.

Although Izzo said his group can often be seen throughout the week in places such as downtown Plattsburgh, their biggest challenge to date was at Bluff Point, with a large group of people lying down on the greens and on golf carts.

The group of people it brings out is Izzo’s favorite part of the game.

“It doesn’t sound fun, but you actually get a rush out of it. All these people are looking at you wondering what’s going on,” he said. “It’s really fun to see their expressions, but it’s also fun because it’s a group activity.

You’re with friends.”

Izzo said although it’s fun to see where they can get the most people, the game is still fun when there is a small group.

NOTICE OF 2010 LAKE CHAMPLAIN SEA LAMPREY CONTROL TREATMENT SCHEDULE AND TEMPORARY WATER USE ADVISORIES The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announces that sea lamprey control treatments will continue this September in four tributaries of Lake Champlain.

The sea lamprey is a parasitic fish that has seriously damaged the trout and salmon fishery in the lake. Crews will apply TFM to four streams according to the following tentative schedule: Date Stream September 14 Putnam Creek September 18 Little Ausable September 22 Ausable River Temporary water use advisories will be in effect in specific areas following each treatment. The purpose of the advisories, developed by the Department of Health, is to minimize exposure to the sea lamprey treatment compound.

The Department of Health recommends that river water, which may contain treatment concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking, swimming, fishing, irrigating, or livestock watering until the control chemical dissipates. Nearby lake water, which may contain dilute concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking or livestock watering until the advisory is lifted.

The treatment and water use advisories will have no effect on most people in the Champlain Basin and no municipal water supplies will be affected. An extensive series of mailings has already been initiated by department staff to contact landowners and renters who may be affected by the treatments. Local broadcast media will announce when advisories begin and end. There is also a toll free number (800-638-5432) the public may call from any location in NY or Vermont for progress reports and updates on treatments and water use advisories.

North Country native’s story appears on The Today Show jeremiah@denpubs.com POMONA, N.J. — Dr. Joshua Duntley has gained national recognition for his work with youths in the field of crime scene investigation.

Duntley, a graduate of Saranac Central School and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, was recently featured in an article by the Wall Street Journal and a television interview on NBC’s The Today Show for his work as co-director of a CSI summer camp held at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Speaking as an assistant professor in the criminal justice program and associated faculty in the psychology program, Duntley was first interviewed for an Aug. 3 piece in the Wall Street Journal written by reporter Nathan Koppel. Koppel was wanting to write a story on “unusual summer camps,” said Duntley, and after searching the Internet, came across his the college’s CSI camp.

“He chose to interview us because we had the best Web site,” explained Duntley. “He also flew to Austin, Tx., to learn about an entrepreneurship camp that they run. The story ended up focusing primarily on our CSI

camp.”

The Stockton camp immersed high-schools in realistic mock-murder scenes to process evidence like bloody footprints and potential murder weapons. The Wall Street Journal story and the camp were so intriguing, Duntley was contacted by The Today Show producers the day after the article was printed.

“The producer from The Today Show who contacted me passed along my contact information to another producer, and enlisted the help of Amy Robach, who hosts the weekend Today Show, to conduct the interview,” said Duntley. “Amy was a very nice person. But then, all of the people with whom I interacted at The Today Show were quite nice.”

Producer Jennie Thompson joined Robach and a film crew at the camp, spending the better part of a day observing and talking with the campers and camp staff, said Duntley. The attention was something Duntley said greatly helped the camp and the college.

“Our camp Web site had something in the neighborhood of 30 unique hits on the day before the story aired on The Today Show,” said Duntley. “On the day the story aired, the camp Web site received over 800 hits.”

continued to receive a much higher level of Web traffic, he added.

“The college’s former Dean of graduate studies told me that The Today Show story about our CSI camp is the best national exposure the college has ever received,” said Duntley.

The exposure wasn’t just helpful for the program and the college, said Duntley. It was also helpful with fostering an interest in forensics and the criminal justice system in general, he said.

“The Today Show story helped to spread the word about our camp and perhaps encouraged interested students to begin pursuing their interests in CSI topics even before entering college,” said Duntley. “I think that our CSI camp offers an opportunity for high school students to explore interests that they have had for some time.”

The effects of an early apple crop

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — If you’ve been on the hunt for apples this summer, you may have noticed many of your favorite orchards and roadside stands have had crops out a little earlier this year.

However, that’s not always a good thing, said Bob Rulfs.

Rulfs, a local apple producer and owner of Rulfs Orchard, said this year ’s apple crop has been approximately 10 days early this year. Though that sounds optimal for consumers looking to pick up their favorite variety of apples, it can mean a shorter buying season, too.

“Everything this year is 10 days early — apples, strawberries, blueberries, sweet corn,” said Rulfs.

The reason? According to the New York Apple Association, the consensus

of state apple growers has been the crop got off to perhaps its fastest start in history last spring with record warm April temperatures. The growing season was accelerated even more by a hot, sunny summer, experts say.

“We had a few warm days in February, March, April. That is really a death nail on [apple producers] because on a warm day, they start growing,” said Rulfs. “And, if you get a day that’s in the 60s or 70s and you get a night that’s in the 20s, you’re in trouble.”

When the warmer weather hit earlier this year, Rulfs said he, like many farmers, was worried about how his crops would be affected.

“Everybody would come by the stand and remark about how beautiful the weather was, but they don’t know what [apple producers] are going through,” said Rulfs. “If all my crops

had failed, and they could have because a couple degrees can make a difference, I’d be out on the road right now. We live from year to year in this business.”

However, the roughly 10-day difference hasn’t been that bad for business, Rulfs admitted. Though the shift in the growing season has resulted in fewer apples and a slight shift in the picking schedules, it’s not all bad, he said.

“We have less apples on the trees, but we have bigger apples,” he said, noting MacIntosh apples were beginning to be picked the last week of August. “We normally start picking Macs after Labor Day ... It all adds up.”

Growers have predicted a crop size of approximately 27 million bushels this year, which is expected to easily keep New York ranked second in apple production nationwide, behind the state of Washington.

Historical association to host cemetery tour

Champlain Valley singers to perform

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Historical Association is sponsoring a tour of cemeteries and the Lyon Mountain Mining and Railroad Museum led by Saranac town historian Jan Couture.

Participants will meet at the museum in Lyon Mountain at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, and proceed south to Saranac. The five-hour tour will include histories of the towns and cemeteries, stories of the interred, and other historical facts related to the cemeteries and the area.

Lunch is included and will be served at the Saranac Town Hall.

Communities encouraged to adopt a platoon FORT DRUM — The 10th Mountain Division will undergo another deployment this fall, involving approximately 3,500 soldiers being deployed to Afghanistan.

The local chapter of the Association of the United States Army is looking for organizations, groups, and individuals to sponsor platoon(s) during their deployment period, which is about 12 months.

The primary responsibility of a sponsor is to provide a link to home for a deployed soldier. This includes sending things such as letters, e-mails, birthday and holiday cards, and small care packages when possible. The purpose is to let them know America cares and appreciates what they are doing.

Platoons can have anywhere from 10 to 30 soldiers and can be potentially connected to a particular platoon or type of platoon such as linking hospitals up with medical platoons and engineer platoons with engineering firms.

Prior to deploying, sponsors are invited to a link-up meeting on Fort Drum. This gives folks the opportunity to meet some of the soldiers in the platoon they are adopting prior to their deployment. Those not in the local area are able to connect via an electronic link up that can be arranged.

This is not a daunting task and the relationships established are said to make it well worth the effort.

Items needed or requested for soldiers include: travel-size hand sanitizer, baby wipes, Ziploc bags, toothpaste, tissues, eye drops, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, nuts, Lil’ Smokeys sausages, gum, hard candy, paperback books, magazines, puzzles, games and video-taped TV shows.

Glass or homemade items as well as chocolate and other items that will melt cannot be sent.

New sidewalk aims to improve access to school

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Students will soon have a safer walk to school in the Peru Central School District.

The town of Peru has begun construction of a new sidewalk along School Street from Pleasant Street to Woodland Drive. In addition to getting students to the middle and high schools, the sidewalk will help those walking to and from the district’s elementary and intermediate schools.

Ground was broken for the project Sept. 1, with local dignitaries and school district officials in attendance. Peru Town Supervisor Peter G. Glushko said the project, which is being funded by an $84,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Routes to School program, has been a long time coming.

“This has been on and off for the past 12 years,” Glushko said of the project’s progress.

“It’s great to see this finally happen. It’s been a big safety issue and a concern not only to the town government but to the school district, the neighbors and to the parents of the children who walk to and from school.”

PLATTSBURGH — The PlattsburghNorth Country Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours at Northern Insuring, 171 Margaret St., Thursday, Sept.

16, from 5:30-7 p.m.

Northern Insuring will celebrate its 80th anniversary. In honor of eight decades in business, eight prize packages will be given away that include a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant, an IPod Touch and two tickets to Cumberland 12 Cinemas.

ELLENBURG CENTER — The Ellenburg Center Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Church St., will host its third annual Fall Harvest Days Saturday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., daily.

The event will include antique equipment demonstrations, horse drawn implements and a stove wood raffle as well as homemade, handmade and homegrown items from vendors.

The weekend will include a roast beef dinner Saturday from 4-8 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for children 10 and younger.

An auction will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by a 50/50 drawing at 4 p.m.

Concessions will be sold both days.

JCEO Benefit Continued from page 1 Clukey, entertainment director for the River Street establishment, said he’s been working to line up several performers, including Elvis tribute artist Joe Ramsey from Glens Falls and local country and western musician Jack Vassar.

“We’re going to have many different artists,” said Clukey. “We’ve got a band called Loose Connection from Ticonderoga that’s going to open the show. What I like about them is they have 30 original songs they perform besides songs they cover. They’re really good.”

Clukey said he’s also thankful to have local performers on board with the event like Vassar, who hails from Plattsburgh.

“Jack Vassar is just a great individual and he’s been here for every fundraiser we’ve done,” said Clukey, who noted more than $40,000 was raise last year through fundraisers at Cocktails.

Vassar, who has performed throughout the area, said he’s proud to be part of the event, knowing proceeds will go to “a good cause.”

“It makes me feel real good and I know it makes Bill feel good,” said Vassar. “There’s a lot of people out there in need. It’s sad that we have to have benefits like this, but we do this to let people know we care.”

The cause, said Clukey, is one he believes in because of the need he hears about in the community.

“We timed it for September because of the holidays that are coming up like Thanksgiving and Christmas,” he said. “We’re hoping to raise a nice chunk of money.”

This Sunday’s event will start at 12 p.m. and include performances by comedians, ventriloquists, magicians, clowns and puppeteers. The day will also include woodcarving demonstrations, raffle drawings and more.

The cost of admission has been reduced from $25 for an all-day pass to $10 in an effort to bring more people through the doors this Sunday, said Clukey.

“We would love to be able to give their food shelf a nice big check,” he said. “And, if people want to bring in nonperishable items for the food shelf, we’ll collect those, too.”
