Local franchisee owner Ray Aley said the tour will start at St. Mary’s Academy Thursday, Aug. 25, with a showing of the animated film “Rango.”

The tour itself — which will benefit various nonprofit organizations — has been in the works for nearly six months,

Showings at St. Mary’s Academy and Holy Family School will be outdoors, with those attending encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating.

Both showings in Plattsburgh will be in a drive-in movie format.

“Which is something the North Country hasn’t had in a long time,” Aley said of a drive-in movie theater.

The showing at St. Mary’s Academy will be paired with an open house for the school earlier that evening from 5 to 7 p.m. and pizza sales

by Papa John’s, which will benefit St. Mary’s.

The showing at Holy Family School will include a barbecue hosted by the school beginning at 3 p.m.

In the event of inclement weather, Aley said showings at each location will be rescheduled for exactly one week later.

“We first started talking about it in February,” said Aley. “It’s been a big undertaking getting things together — picking the movies, getting the screen, choosing the right venues and aligning ourselves with good nonprofits.”

Though admission to the movie tour will be free, it will generate revenue through concessions sales, said Aley.

That will help organizations like St. Mary’s Academy, which has been facing financial challenges in the past year, and will also generate awareness for the school, said Aley.

“St. Mary’s needs students and this is a way to get families to come out and take a

Mayor George A. Rivers gave an update on the restoration project following a regular meeting of the village board of trustees Aug. 15. According to Rivers, the project is “on hold” until bids for work to be performed at the site are reviewed

by Erdman Anthony, the Troybased engineering firm the village is utilizing as a consultant for the project.

The board reviewed the bids at Monday night’s meeting which included estimates for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work as well as civil engineering for the project.

Larry Sorrell recognized for years of service to village DPW

CHAMPLAIN — Larry L. Sorrell, superintendent of the village department of public works, has been recognized for 25 years of service by the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials.

Sorrell was presented with a framed certificate marking his milestone during the Aug. 8 meeting of the village board of trustees.

“It was nice,” Sorrell said of the recognition.

“I didn’t know it was coming; otherwise I would have worn a dress shirt to the meeting,” he added, laughing.

Though the state organiza-

tion honored him for a quarter-century of service, Sorrell has actually worked for the village DPW since March 2, 1983. Since that time, Sorrell has worked in every aspect of the department, including working on the village’s water and sewer systems, plowing snow, and cleaning village streets.

“When I first started, we used to sweep the streets with a 16-inch push broom, which we’d pick up with shovels and put into a backhoe,” Sorrell recalled. “Now, we have a streetsweeper.”

Sorrell said he enjoys all aspects of his job, and especially likes working with the older residents of the village.

“I like being there to help them,” he said. “It’s the way

I was brought up.”

Growing up on his family’s dairy farm also gave him a strong work ethic, said Sorrell, which has carried over into his job today.

“Even when I’m not working, I like to stop in [to the village office] to see what’s happening,” said Sorrell.

Overall, Sorrell said he likes his job and will continue to do it as long as he can.

“I like it because it’s not the same thing every day,” he said. “One day we’re plowing snow, the next day it’s fixing a water main break.”

Mayor Gregory R. Martin commended Sorrell for his dedication to the village and congratulated him on his years of service so far.

“No one in this village is

more aware of the infrastructure of this village than Larry,” said Martin. “He knows where every culvert and every other thing in the village is. He’s a wealth of knowledge and he knows everybody.”

“He’s really done well in this village and we’re happy to have him,” Martin added.

In addition to his work for the village, Sorrell owns and operates J.E.M. Farm Appaloosas with his wife, Donna, and their three children — Justin, Erin and Megan.

Their family business shows and breeds Appaloosa horses and works regularly with 4-H students like the Tangled Reins 4-H Club, led by Sorrell’s wife, Donna.

Village Fest, other events planned this Saturday Mission center sales to help CHAMPLAIN — The village’s annual Champlain Village Fest will be held this Saturday, Aug. 20.

The day’s events will kick off with a children’s fun run starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 5K run at 9 a.m., starting at the village park on River Street.

The village will host a rededication ceremony at Paquette River Park on Main Street at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will mark recent improvements made to the park, including the installation of a

new table, benches and a barbecue grill.

Shortly after, back at the River Street park, the village will host a variety of activities from noon to 4 p.m., including a free ice cream social, games and face painting for children as well as several exhibits. The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department will host a children’s Safe Identification Program event. Demonstrations and displays by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and Champlain Volunteer Fire Department will also

round out the afternoon. Champlain EMS will also offer blood pressure screening, and the neighboring Samuel de Champlain History Center will be open for public to view historical exhibits that show Champlain’s history.

Champlain Village Fest will be held in conjunction with townwide garage sales and an open house for Champlain Telephone Company, 1118 State Route 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’ve got several options to look at, several things we can do,” said Rivers, who noted the village committee overseeing the project is expected to meet with Erdman Anthony Monday, Aug. 22.

The restoration project was awarded a $832,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation and $95,000 Congressional earmark from then Rep. John M. McHugh, in 2009. However, one snag in the restoration efforts, said Rivers, has been requirements from some of the funding sources that the circa1885 building remain true to its historical character, down to the windows throughout the building.

Though the village would be able to purchase energy-efficient windows through the Independent Energy Efficiency Program at no cost to taxpayers, said Rivers, state funding requires the village restore the existing original windows in the building.

“Marvin can make windows that will look exactly like what’s there only they’ll be thermalpane and we’d get them for nothing,” said Rivers, who expressed his displeasure with the state funding restrictions.

Rivers said he is suggesting a meeting be called with the state Historic Preservation Office in Saratoga Springs to discuss the matter and potentially save thousands of dollars off the price tag for the project, which was last estimated at a little less than $1 million.

The work to be performed includes replacing the existing roof, repairing drainage, chimney work and façade improvements. The restoration would aim to develop the building, at least in part, into a museum of the village's history, which has centered a great deal on the railroad.

ELLENBURG DEPOT — Northern Adirondack Central FFA had another exceptional year at the annual Clinton County Fair in Morrisonville, according to faculty advisor Donald Jones.

“This year. it was extremely hot but the students worked extremely hard in the FFA show, and the open show,” said Jones. “In total, we had 21 youths competing in five classes of showmanship.”

Lowe’s closure a reality check: We need leadership, confidence Soul searching needed L

ust two years ago Ticonderoga leaders envisioned a vibrant commercial district at its “Four Corners.” The area surrounding the intersection of Routes 9N and 74 already had Wal-mart attracting thousands of shoppers. Lowe’s and Dunkin’ Donuts had just opened. Rite Aid, wanting to be where the action is, moved from its downtown location to the “Four Corners.” Plans were being discussed to bring national hotel and restaurant chains along with several smaller retailers to the area.

To prepare for the economic boom, the town extended infrastructure in the area. New York State modified Route 9N to handle the expected increase in traffic.

Ticonderoga seemed poised to make an economic leap. Today, those dreams have been dashed. Dunkin’ Donuts closed just a few months after opening and now sits empty. Plans for the hotel and restaurant collapsed. This week Lowe’s unexpectedly closed, leaving 86 people unemployed and a 124,000 square feet building empty.

Wal-mart remains and — like it or not — is the community’s retail engine.

When Wal-mart expressed interest in Ticonderoga more than a decade ago, a common debate took place. Are “big box” stores good for communities? With the loss of Lowe’s, that debate has been renewed without an answer. Lowe’s failed, leaving behind a huge warehouse-type building that could sit vacant for years. Wal-mart has succeeded, providing jobs, area shoppers goods and local government taxes.

Where does Ticonderoga go from here?

No one can accuse local leaders of being disengaged. The community has the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance, Ti Economic Development Committee, PRIDE and the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce all working to improve the local economy. And it has plans. There’s the Quality Destination Plan, the National Main Street Trust plan and plans to construct a replica

18th Century sawmill to serve as a tourist draw and economic hub.

Ticonderoga is not alone. Communities throughout the North Country are struggling to improve their economies.

Almost all have similar local groups working on the issue. And there have been state programs, like the now-defunct Empire State Development Zones, that were supposed to spur economic development. Offering tax breaks, loans and other incentives, the EDZ program was supposed to bring major manufacturers and jobs to the North Country. To take full advantage of the program Essex County beefed up its Industrial Development Agency and communities constructed industrial parks awaiting companies. Today, those parks in Ticonderoga, Moriah, Schroon Lake and Keeseville sit mostly empty.

Walking along Main Street in Port Henry recently, Tom Scozzafava could only shake his head.

“I’m frustrated,” the Moriah supervisor admitted. “Our economy is worse now than when the (iron) mines closed in 1972. Look at the businesses that have closed in the last three years. Port Henry’s main street doesn’t have a single business on its east side.

“What do we have to do? Why can’t we attract business here,” Scozzafava asked. “What do we need to do? I don’t have the answer, but I know we need to do a lot of soul searching.”

The loss of Lowe’s is a blow the area economy, but perhaps it’s also an opportunity to do that “soul searching.”

What type of economic development does a community want? What type is needed? What type is realistic? Those and many other questions need to be answered, especially before local communities roll out the red carpet for another big box retailer.

Vermont versus New York Well, here we go again. Watching the Channel Five News at 6 p.m. on July 4, it seems that unless you live in Vermont, you don't count.

That's according to the news (one or two stories from New York) and now FEMA. In the Press-Republican yesterday, July 3, a news article stated that FEMA is not helping individuals, only businesses, in New York.

But, in Vermont (the all-important state, apparently) they (FEMA) are handing out flyers for everyone to sign up for help.

Until the news today, I was feeling pretty good about living in New York. It's really sad to have to watch the news from a Vermont channel to get New York news.

Now, in all fairness, I did leave the April 12 budget proposal meeting early but not because of the board's actions. I left, without need to make everyone aware that I was doing so, thanks to the zoo that the unbridled adults had established in that auditorium. I've got to admit, the ones with the least influence in this situation — the students — are handling it much better than the adults in this community (barring one purposeless student-organized sit-in).

This is not to say that every parent in the district is behaving this way or that every student is, either. But, on the whole, the adults in this community are behaving in such a way that you would think they were the ones still in grade school.

Saddened by BCSD controversy

Disgusted with board’s decision Although most of the community is sick of it, the events at Beekmantown Central School have brought up an interesting comparison.

Parents, your children are better behaved than you are.

The proof? The way these two groups have reacted to the budget issue and more recent principal switcheroo.

How did the students react? We asked questions, sought information and facts, engaged in open dialogues with our peers, drafted letters to the board, attended meetings, and those of us 18 or older voted (without teacher influence, I might add).

I am an elementary teacher in the Beekmantown Central School District. Over the past few months, this is not something that I have wanted to shout out from the rooftops due to misinformation and negativity that has clouded the district that I call home.

It has been quite heart-breaking to listen and watch as the reputation of our wonderful school has declined.

I had the opportunity to attend a grant-funded conference with 15 of my colleagues. Elementary Principals Matt Slattery and Garth Frechette joined us for the week-long training. This experience reminded me of some hugely important details.

Try considering roses for your garden!

N

o other flowering shrub brings about as much emotion, especially romantic emotion, as the rose. In fact, 10 years ago, my husband and I were married at the renowned rose garden in Thornden Park in Syracuse. It’s no wonder that people love roses in the garden — with their season-long flower production, large flowers, and almost unlimited color choice roses are an integral part of almost any flower garden.

Many of the roses in the Syracuse rose garden are climbing roses, hybrid tea roses, floribunda, and grandiflora.

There is no doubt that these roses are beautiful. Their peak blooms are in June and July, but as I remember the roses still looked gorgeous in August during our wedding with their large fragrant blooms.

Unfortunately, these types of roses take a lot of care, especially since they are not particularly hardy in our harsh winter climate. To survive they need extra protection, in the form of heavy winter mulches, burlap wraps, and even the burying of their canes, in the case of climbing roses. And many times, even if you manage to keep the rose alive, there is significant winter die back. This can add stress to the plant, causing it to be more susceptible to diseases and live a significantly shorter life than a tender rose grown in a warmer, milder climate.

survive our harsher winters. Modern shrub roses vary in hardiness, but also in plant size and form, flower color, fragrance, and flower shape.

They also vary in their disease resistance. Some of the more common modern rose series include the artist series and explorer series, the knock out roses, and the modern series. There are many other series to consider as well.

Planting a hardy rose is similar to planting any shrub, though the graft union (normally a slightly swollen knob) should be planted 2-3 inches below the soil’s surface. Caring for a hardy, modern shrub rose is similar to that of any other shrub or woody plant. In particular, roses want to be in an area with at least 6 hours of sunlight. Roses will need to be watered, at the root level regularily, and only minimally fertilized.

If you are looking for a plant to add season-long color to the garden, consider trying one of the newer hardy shrub roses. Finding suitable rose suitable to our northern winters and your unique growing conditions from the among the growing number of hardy shrub roses does require research, but in my opinion is well worth the investigation!

It reminded me of the phenomenal staff who work at BCSD. It reminded me that we teachers will continue to learn and strive to be the best teachers that we can be for our students. It reminded me how passionate we are when it comes to teaching. It reminded me that Garth Frechette will do a great job at Cumberland Head Elementary School because he is amazing. It reminded me that Diane Fox will do a great job at the High School because she is amazing.

It reminded me, most importantly, that budgets will pass and fail, School Board members will be voted in and voted out, and the seasons will continue to change.

One thing is certain in all of the chaos and uncertainty: The students will come in September, and we will teach them. We will teach them with passion, love and dedication because that is what teachers do ... we teach. And for that, I am extremely proud.

Great hospital care On April 5, I had a total knee replacement at CVPH Medical Center.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Stephane Mulligan and the employees on R6. I am very impressed with the treatment I have received.

The staff on R6 were extremely professional, sympathetic to my needs and assisted me in my quick recovery. They made my stay at CVPH very pleasant.

August recipe of the month

I

love hummus, it is a great satisfying healthy snack.

However, I sometimes find the original recipe made with garbanzo beans to be a little tough on the tummy.

I find that black beans are easier to digest and loaded with protein and fiber. From a single, one-cup serving of black beans you get nearly 15 grams of fiber (well over half of the Daily Value and the same amount consumed by the average U.S. adult in one entire day of eating) and 15 grams of protein (nearly one third of the Daily Value and equivalent to the amount in 2 ounces of a meat like chicken or a fish like salmon).

The following recipe is quite spicy and I actually liked it better the second day. It seemed a little more mild once the flavors had a chance to mingle. I enjoyed it with fresh veggies, like carrots, cucumbers, and celery, but it is also great as a spread on

Library’s summer reading program feeding minds, stomaches

The programs are something volunteers like Jennifer McIntyre consider a great asset to the community. McIntyre reads to children at Mooers Free Library during the library’s weekly summer reading program and has been volunteering since the program was first offered there last summer.

Rabid skunk found in town of Plattsburgh, health department issues precautions PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Health Department has reported a case of rabies has been confirmed in a skunk found on Archie Bordeau Road in the town of Plattsburgh.

The health department stated in Aug. 11 press release that the sick animal was reported by a local resident and submitted to the New York State Rabies Laboratory as a surveillance specimen on Aug. 8.

No contact with humans or domestic animals was reported.

According to the health department, this is the first case of rabies confirmed in a “terrestrial” animal — mammals other than bats — in

Clinton County since 1997.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services Program will be distributing oral vaccine baits for wildlife beginning around Thursday, Sept. 1. The health department will be scheduling several rabies clinics in September and October.

Rabies is caused by a virus found in the saliva and nervous tissue of infected animals and is spread to other animals or humans by direct contact. The virus infects the central nervous system in mammals and is considered 100 percent fatal. Symptoms of rabies include unusual, aggressive or

calm and friendly behavior, an inability to eat or drink, drooling or “foaming” at the mouth, staggering, circling, seizures, coma and death.

The health department recommends the following precautions to protect yourself and your family and pets from possible exposure to rabies: • Report any sick or strange acting wildlife.

• Vaccinate pets and livestock. New York State law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age. Vaccination is also recommended for livestock with frequent human contact. Vaccinating your domestic animal not only pro-

vides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people.

• Do not feed wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.

• Do not approach an unknown animal, either wild or domestic, especially if it is acting in an unusual way.

• Report all animal bites and contact with bats to the Health Department.

Human rabies can be prevented after exposure by administering a series of shots.

• Keep garbage cans tightly covered and avoid storing any food outside.

• Children should be instructed to tell an adult immediately if they were

bitten or scratched by any animal.

• To prevent the possible spread of the rabies virus, no one, including trappers and nuisance wildlife rehabilitators, should transport and relocate any wild animals at this time.

• If an unvaccinated pet comes in contact with a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the pet must be quarantined for six months.

• Vaccinated pets that come in contact with a rabid or suspected rabid animal must be given a booster rabies vaccination within five days of the contact.

Guardians of the Ribbon raising money for fire truck repairs ‘Kathy’ out of commission until further notice jeremiah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — They’re down, but they’re not out.

The Northern New York chapter of Guardians of the Ribbon — a nonprofit organization working to raise money and awareness for cancer in women and children — has had a bit of a setback with moving forward with its mission. The chapter ’s pink fire truck, which has become a familiar sight across the North Country since it was purchased earlier this year, has run into some mechanical problems.

James E. Garrant from the West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department, who serves as president of the chapter, said the truck has broken leaf springs which will need to be replaced before the truck can be put back on the road. The truck, which is displayed at various community fundraising events, has been out of commission for nearly two weeks,

having last been used at a benefit in Plattburgh for Matthew Cech, a young boy with mitochondrial disease.

“We were on the way home when we felt something wasn’t right,” recalled Garrant. “So, we brought it in to be check out and that’s when we found out what was wrong.”

The cost to replace the truck’s leaf springs could be “anywhere up to $3,000,” said Garrant. The chapter will have a better idea of the cost upon further inspection of the truck this week, he said.

“Right now, it’s not safe to drive,” said Garrant.

One silver lining for the situation, Garrant added, is that Dennis Pilon, owner of Pilon Transport and Towing in Chazy, has offered to perform the work free of charge for the department. Pilon, who serves as captain of the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department, said he felt compelled to help because he lost both his mother and grandmother to cancer.

“It kind of hits home for me,” said Pilon.

Garrant said he hopes the truck — named “Kathy” in honor of Garrant’s wife, a three-year cancer survivor — will be up and running again soon.

“It’s the centerpiece of our whole chapter,” Garrant said of the fire truck. “We’ve even had people down in Saratoga talking about it and had requests to take it to Albany. It’s important to have it out there as a message of hope.”

The chapter will host a spaghetti dinner this Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Beekmantown Volunteer Fire Department, 6973 State Route 22, from 12 to 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the cost of repairing the fire truck. The menu will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, dinner roll, butter coffee, milk and dessert.

The cost of the dinner will be $8 per person. Take-outs will be available.

Pasquale’s to open second location in downtown Dannemora

DANNEMORA — Pasquale’s Pizzeria will soon open a second location in the village of Dannemora.

The business, based in Peru and owned by Scott Bazzano and managed by his mother, Sandy Bazzano, will open a new location at 1161 Cook St. Scott said he had been looking into expanding his business for more than a year.

“I was driving through [Dannemora] one day and saw the building and thought I’d give it a shot,” he said. “The building was available and for the right price. It kind of all fell together.”

The process to get the second location off the

ground has been one six months in the making, said Scott. Now, as the summer draws to a close, thee Dannemora Pasquale’s readies itself for an opening toward the end of the month.

“It’s been a lot of work,” said Scott as he recently toured the Cook Street building.

The new Pasquale’s will offer the same menu as it’s sister location in Peru, including pizza, wings, hot and cold subs, pasta dishes, calzones, michigans, burgers strombolis and salads.

“It’s going to be more pizzeria style,” said Scott.

The business will offer dine-in seating for approximately 25 people and include a full bar. The business will also deliver orders in a 10 to 12-mile

radius.

“That’ll take us into Chazy Lake, down into Cadyville and the back side of Saranac and, of course, all of Dannemora,” said Sandy.

The new business venture is one both Scott and his mother are excited about, he said.

“Dannemora has been in need of a little bar and restaurant, because they haven’t had one in a long time,” said Scott.

Once open for business the Dannemora location will be open seven days a week. Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The business is expected to employ 12 to 15 people.

Dannemora Free Library closed, will reopen in new location Aug. 29 DANNEMORA — The Dannemora Free Library is now closed as the facility moves from its home at Dannemora Town Hall on Cook Street to the village of Dannemora's new office building on Emmons Street.

Cocktails hosting ‘All for Ana’ this Sunday Benefit to help girl in dire need of a kidney transplant

Loffler ’s daughter, Ana Araujo, has been diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition which has caused her to go into renal failure and require dialysis treatments three times a week at the age of 23. Araujo — a Morrisonville native who attended Saranac Middle School and graduated from Plattsburgh High School — was in her

freshman year at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh when she was diagnosed, said Loffler.

“Everything started about 10 months ago,” Loffler recalled. “She was having a lot of discomfort. [The doctors] ran some tests and detected a large amount of protein in her urine and found she had high blood pressure.”

What doctors later learned was that Araujo’s condition had caused severe damage to her kidneys, which were functioning at approximately 28 percent of normal capacity, said Loffler. That led Araujo to ultimately need a kidney transplant. Luckily, her mother was found to be an eligible donor.

“We found out like a week ago that I’m a match. Thank God,” said Loffler.

Donating a kidney to her daughter is something she didn’t hesitate to do, said Loffler.

“She’s my child,” said Loffler. “Even if I ended up being the one on dialysis, oh well.

As long as my daughter lives, that’s what matters. You’ll do anything for your kids.”

Though the transplant is scheduled to be performed Daily Specials

the week after Thanksgiving at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington, Vt., Loffler is trying to raise money to help with the expenses of the procedure. The overall cost of the transplant is estimated at approximately $80,000, said Loffler, though insurance will cover much of that amount.

“We’re just trying to raise enough to cover the expenses that aren’t covered,” said Loffler, who noted her daughter is insured for the procedure though she is not.

Ultimately, Loffler said the goal of the event is to raise $5,000, but added every dollar will help.

“All for Ana” will be held this Sunday, Aug. 21, at Cocktails, 42 River St., from 12 to 5 p.m. The event will include live music, stand-up comedy routines, raffles, games and concessions. Admission is a $5 suggested donation at the door.

‘Cuts for a Cure’ returns to fight cystic fibrosis

PERU — Meghan Daley Taptick is at it again.

Taptick, a Peru native who resides in Rutland, Vt., is teaming up with Colours Salon to host “Cuts for a Cure,” a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This Sunday, Aug. 21, will mark the second year in a row the fundraiser will be held to help those with the chronic disease which affects a person's lungs and digestive system.

“We were shocked,” Taptick said of how much last year ’s fundraiser collected.

“We raised $1,800. We were hoping just to break $1,000.

We were pleasantly surprised.”

Taptick was motivated to host the event last year based on her own connection to cystic fibrosis.

Her daughter, Brooke, now age 3, was diagnosed with the disease at 10 days old.
