Saranac town leaders want input from residents

SARANAC — The Saranac Town Council is once again seeking the input of its residents.

The council’s advisory committee will host a Community Visioning Workshop this Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Saranac Town Hall on State Route 3. The purpose will be to discuss the development of a plan that focuses on revitalization and enhancement of the town’s hamlets and Saranac River/Route 3 Corridor.

Councilman Gerald W. Delaney said the workshop will focus on receiving feedback from town residents regarding the direction in which they’d like to see a plan take.

Sheriff’s department receives $424k to enhance border security jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Law enforcement agencies have been given a financial boost to help with their vigilant task of securing our nation’s border.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department has received $423,959 in federal funding from Operation Stonegarden, a grant program administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funding, explained Sheriff David N. Favro, will be utilized to purchase necessary equipment such as vehicles, license plate readers and cameras to enhance security along the U.S.-Canada border. “[The grant funding] pays for all operation and maintenance of any of the equipment that is utilized during this operation. It pays for all salary and benefits for the officers that are participating in this operation,” explained Favro. “There’s not

one penny that comes out of my local budget to be able to provide this opportunity for the North Country and the entire country.”

The sheriff’s department is one of 13 agencies in New York State that applied for and received funding through Operation Stonegarden, and also the recipient of the largest amount awarded in the state this year. The department has consistently received funding from the program since first participating in the border security partnership with the U.S. Border Patrol and other law enforcement agencies in 2008.

According to Favro, the sheriff’s department then received $329,997 and, in the following year, received $510,309. During the first nine months alone of participation in Operation Stonegarden, the department logged more than 47,855 miles and more than 2,442 hours in patrols.

“We have felt for several years that Clinton County is critical to national security. We have the

largest freshwater entrance into the country with Lake Champlain. We have approximately 34 miles of international border with Canada,” said Favro.

“When you couple that with the over 1,100 square miles that we’re responsible for patrolling and providing public safety for in Clinton County, we need all the resources we can get.”

Stonegarden has solidified a partnership with the U.S. Border Patrol and members of the sheriff’s department, said Favro, allowing law enforcement officials to cover more ground along the northern border and interrupt and possibly prevent any attempts at illegal smuggling and terrorism.

“This program, for what has been invested in it in the North Country, has provided more than just securing the borders,” said Favro. “It has built and enhanced a law enforcement partnership that is second to none other in the country.”

“The various local counties here in upstate New York have done and continue to do a great job of

working with the United State Border Patrol to secure funding through this grant,” added Norm Lague, agent-in-charge with the U.S. Border Patrol’s Champlain station. “We look forward to working with the agencies through this grant in applying a unified law enforcement approach to border security.

Regardless of funding, the eternal vigilance of the community is still the most important thing in helping keep our county and the nation safe, said Favro.

“We really do need and implore the use of our local resources and people if they see anything suspicions — vehicles that don’t seem to fit in, individuals cutting through fields, any information — please notify your local law enforcement agency right away and report that to us so we can investigate,” said Favro. “The eyes and the ears of the people are our most valuable tool and we really need to utilize them to our maximum capacity.”

Yes, they call it the Streak Car keys can be lifesaving

T

he iPad stirred the marketplace when it was released causing renewed interest in that sector of computers. Three months ago, Dell released details on the upcoming launch of the Streak which, according to Dell, will compete with the iPad. A problem for the Streak seems to be whether it should be considered a big smart phone or a small tablet?

The Apple iPad clearly fills the niche between the iPod/iPhone and the Mac for the Apple faithful. It is a tablet with no phone capability whatsoever although it runs the iPhone mobile operating system rather than a traditional operating system and its hardware is much closer to a Smartphone than a netbook.

The Streak has all the capability of a Smartphone with a whopping five-inch touchscreen. Featuring Qualcomm’s 1-GHz Snapdragon Processor and two Gigabytes of internal storage, the Streak will connect using cellular 3G or with 802.11b/g wireless if detected nearby.

When released, the Streak will be running an older version of the Android operating system, but users will be able to freely

download the newer version when it becomes available later this year. That’s important for anyone who expects to surf the Internet and consume flash video. The older Android version does not support flash, the newer version does. While that may be cause for thought, consider that the open-source Android operating system is becoming widely supported

ccording to the July edition of the Orleans County Office for the Aging publication, “The Friendly Carrier,” one of the smartest things you can do for safety is to keep your car keys by your bed at night.

If your keys are equipped with a panic button, having them close at hand in the middle of the night is a good idea. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn if off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. The next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: this is a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it, it will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or the garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the intruder won’t stick around. After a few seconds,

This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

This would be useful in an emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can’t reach a phone. It is also a good idea to carry your keys when you are outside in case you fall. You can activate the car alarm and someone will know there is a problem.

Shaping Saranac’s future As a member of the town’s Project Advisory Committee, I would like to invite town residents to a workshop that will be held at town hall on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 6:30 p.m.

What would you like Saranac to look like 20 years from now? What do you think are our important community assets? Are there concerns you have about our town that you think should be addressed as we regard a vision for our future? What are some opportunities for community enhancement that we should not miss?

These and other such questions will be asked to those attending the workshop. I hope you can spare an hour or two on that Wednesday night because any planning that does not take into account all the voices comes up short.

In order to add vitality to the town’s revitalization efforts, please join us. Your energy and vigor will be missed if you’re not there.

2-1-1 not needed Your article “2-1-1’s future uncertain” in the July 31, 2010 issue is a perfect example of why the state of New York is out of money. According to figures cited in the article, the 211 information system costs the region $85,000 per year and that, in nearly one year the system has been in operation, 293 calls have been handled. That equates to a whopping per call cost of $290.

Spending $290 to provide each caller with information that, for the most part, can be located by picking up and using the phone book is ridiculous. Plus, in addition to the up-front call center expenses, it seems quite likely that widespread marketing of the “convenience” of the 211 service ends up steering more people to become consumers of state-provided social services and public assistance, costing taxpayers even more money.

It’s past time to pull the plug on this expensive boondoggle.

The library isn’t about “Ssshhhhhhh!” anymore. That used to prevail in a bygone era. People would quietly enter the library, pull out tomes and take a seat; careful not to scrap the floor when they pulled out the chair. Those were the days when bifocaled men would lift a brow to someone making unnecessary noise. Perfectly quaffed, gloved ladies would sneer at a sneeze, cough or girls giggling nearby. That was then … this is Now! If you go into a library now, you’re likely to hear children singing and playing their kazoos. You’re apt to see neighbors having a lively discussion about the newly published political satire. At the Dodge, you’re going to see the teens playing guitar or cards or even reading a story to the younger kids. It amazes me the ideas they have about issues that affect not only them but the world. The bottom line; the library is still about books, but so much more. Fun flows and prevails in the libraries of today. A good library has something for everyone. That’s not the exact quote, but its good enough. Libraries are transforming to meet the needs of patrons. Stop by your local library. See the changes. Take part in the growth.

When will late blight hit?

L

ast year, I did not get one tomato from my plants before they succumbed to late blight. I know many other gardeners here and throughout the Northeast didn’t get to savor a home grown tomato either. Last year ’s epidemic can be attributed to two main factors — the fungal disease being transported here on tomato transplants from the south and a cool wet summer. Luckily, this year, we have not seen late blight here.

While we haven’t seen it around here yet, there is still the possibility we could see a late blight outbreak in our area this year. Late blight has been confirmed in Maine, Massachusetts, and even in parts of New York state. But just because it has been confirmed in the state, does not mean we have to be in a state of panic.

The weather has been warm and dry. Late blight spores need wet leaves in order to infect a tomato plant. The sunny, dry days we have been having, help to keep our plants dry. You can also help reduce the risk of late blight by only watering the base of your plant and by watering in the morning. Evening irrigation keeps the plants moist all night long. When watered in the morning, the sun dries the plants at a much faster rate, reducing the late blight risk.

Proper pruning helps prevent fungal infections as well. Tomatoes are prolific producers of suckers. These suckers can produce fruit, but also make the plant very dense. This prevents the inner leaves from drying quickly. Leaving all of the suckers on the plant also reduces the size of tomatoes and slows the ripening rate.

To prune your tomatoes, simply cut off the suckers, or branches

that shoot off above a set of leaves coming off the main stem. You can leave one or two suckers if you would like without greatly risking an increased risk of fungal tomato diseases.

If you suspect you may have late blight, take a sample to your local Cornell Cooperative Extension office. They will be able to determine if it is late blight, another fungal disease, or some other problem.

I am hopeful xwe will not get late blight or if we do, it will be late in the season — maybe in September. I’ve already been enjoying cherry tomatoes and my first full sized tomatoes will be ripe this week. So, even if we do get late blight, I’m already better off than last year!

Graduate student Courtney LaMere is asking successful bear hunters this year to collect the reproductive tract from the animal’s entrails to be studied as part of research she is conducting to aid the state with its wildlife management efforts.

This year, LaMere said, is expected to be a banner year for beechnuts.

While LaMere has studies conducted by SUNYESF staff that focus on forest food abundance as well as harvest statistics and nuisance bear complaints from the DEC, there is little data tracking bear reproductive rates.

So, LaMere is reaching out to hunters for their help.

A number of collection points have been established, and LaMere is asking successful bear hunters to gather and submit the reproductive tract of female bears from their entrails.

“I need to do a major outreach to hunters as I’m asking for something they would usually leave in the woods,” she said.

According to LaMere, there are telltale signs left in a bear’s reproductive tract after a sow has mated and given birth to cubs. The process of ovulation and birth leaves visible scars inside the ovaries and uterus.

Cutting the tract open and studying the scars inside can shed tremendous light on the number of cubs produced, reproductive timing and reproductive success, LaMere said.

The findings will be used to not only help predict “bad bear summers,” but also help determine if female bears synchronize their reproduction with natural food cycles.

Similar studies in other states such as West Virginia, Michigan and Maine have been done and the findings have become a useful tool in wildlife management.

t has long been an accepted theory among wildlife biologists nuisance bear complaints rise during years when natural food sources are scarce.

It stands to reason bears would be forced into campsites and residential areas in search of food during seasons in which berries and nuts are limited, and studies seem to support that premise.

But can environmental officials accurately predict when these years will occur?

Further, do bears have higher reproduction rates during years when natural forage is abundant?

A graduate student of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) aims to help answer those questions.

As part of her graduate studies, Courtney LaMere has begun a project looking at the relationships between natural food abundance and human-bear conflict numbers and reproduction.

She is doing so in tandem with state wildlife biologists at SUNYESF's Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) at the Huntington Wildlife Forest in Newcomb.

The goal, according to LaMere, is to “to put some empirical evidence behind it and give the DEC a predictive tool for dealing with ‘bad bear summers.’”

“Another hypothesis I have is that sows synchronize their reproduction with the beechnut crop,” LaMere added.

Future 4-H facility, respite home receives first guests

MOOERS — As a volunteer for Hospice of the North Country, Ken Lushia understands the need for a respite house in the area.

Lushia purchased a home on Route 11 about a year ago, and hopes to have it up and running as the Leeward and Margaret Monette Respite House — the estate of which Lushia purchased the home — sometime in September.

“My goal is to have a day and evening where people can drop somebody off and have them taken care of and then pick them back up after whatever they’re going to do,” Lushia explained.

The home also has a carriage house, which Lushia plans to have as the meeting place for the Tangled Reins 4-H Club, of which is granddaughter is a member of.

“I’ve purchased enough property to have horses here,” he said. “We’re going to be able to do horseback riding lessons and different things.”

Having horses around is something Lushia sees as a benefit in terms of those utilizing the respite house.

“Especially people with disabilities, they like the fact that there’s animals around,” he explained. “They can pet them and stuff.”

Eight of the nine surviving siblings of the Lange family were able to make it to the 90th birthday celebration of their father Norbert Lange.

“We haven’t seen each other in two years,” explained daughter Paula Schares, who said the last get together was for her sister Mary Lafleur.

The siblings all live across the country, in states such as Missouri, Florida, North Dakota, Indiana and Minnesota.

However, with Norbert now living in Plattsburgh with Schares, 35 members of the Lange family came out to the North Country to celebrate.

Daughter Pat Foster considers the area to be “beautiful,” with many family members taking the chance to climb Lyon Mountain while in the area.

However, many of them stayed around the house.

“We’ve been able, because of this house, get into groups and do different things,” said Foster. “Cards and conversation. Because this house is such a wonderful facility that it’s just been perfect for a family get together and getting reunited.”

Lushia said having the family using the house was “such a thrill.”

“Having them here and being a part of this whole thing, It’s been wonderful,” he said. “It’s a test run to see how this all flows, and it really does.”

Feral cats still an issue 10 years later

jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It’s a problem that many don’t give much thought to, says Victoria St. John, but the fact of the matter is feral cats are a major issue here and across the country.

“There’s at least 60 million feral cats in the United States, if not, more,” said St. John, director of the St. John’s Feral Cat Fund.

Since 2000, St. John has been working in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties to reduce the population of feral cats — cats that have limited human contact and are often mistakenly referred to as “wild.” In the past 10 years, St. John has helped trap, vaccinate, spay and neuter thousands of cats, releasing many of them where they were found, in the hopes of drastically reducing the number of diseased and procreating cats.

“If they aren’t spayed or neutered, these cats can keep reproducing four to five times each year,” noted St. John.

Given the rate of reproduction and the number of offspring from each litter, tens of thousands of cats can be added to the local feline population. That can be taxing on donor-supported organizations like the St. John Feral Cat Fund and local animal shelters.

“If you have four cats that have litters four to five times a year, that can add up,” St. John said

The goal each year is to mass trap feral cats, collecting as many as 100-200 and having them inoculated prior to “kitten season” during the spring.

“It doesn’t always happen, depending on the funding, especially with the economy,” said St. John.

The organization relies on fundraisers and donations to fund the veterinary services it receives for the animals as well as in educating communities about their Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Though the St. John’s Feral Cat Fund has help from more than 20 volunteers conducting fundraisers and distributing educational literature, the main trapping work is done by St. John,

“There’s a lot of people who think they have a feral cat outside,” said St. John.

“Some will call and say it’s eating out of their hand, but a feral cat won’t come up to you and do that. Feral cats don’t like human contact.”

“We could have a great month, do a fundraiser and raise $300-$500 and have one cat that needs an emergency operation, which takes all of that.”

“We try to get things donated, but because we’re believed to be competitions with local shelters, that can be tough,” continued St. John.

“But, the thing that sets us apart from the shelters is we focus on feral cats and we provide information about them for the public.”

In fact, St. John Feral Cat Fund and local shelters work well together, said St. John.

“The people at Elmore SPCA [animal shelter in Peru] have been very helpful to our organization. The board members have donated cat food, litter and other things to help us during the last couple of months,” she said.

“The problem is so big, it’s so much bigger than any one group can handle,” said Inger Joy, president of the Elmore SPCA board of directors, who noted the donations from Peru shelter have come from surplus donations not specifically earmarked to be used at Elmore.

“We share what extra we have. We never take away from our own animals.”

Through collaboration between Elmore SPCA and St. John’s Feral Cat Fund coordinated by Elmore SPCA board member Judy Belrose, the organizations are able to take on the

“We value their opinions,” said Delaney. “I feel we really need to get the townspeople out to listen to this and give their input.”

“The only way this is going to work if we hear from the public,” he added.

The public discussion will be mediated by Margaret W. Irwin of River Street Planning and Development, Troy. Once Irwin’s firm has all comments in hand, a plan will be developed taking the comments into account.

“They’re going to sit down and sift through everything said and they’re going to come up with an action plan,” said Delaney.

The firm will then bring the plan back before the town council for approval. The entire process should take approximately 60 days, said Delaney. However, it wouldn’t likely be until sometime next spring

the plan would be put into action, Delaney noted, funded by a grant from the Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.

Delaney is now focusing on getting at least a fraction of the town’s thousands of residents there, which he admits won’t be an easy feat.

“There’s a little over 4,000 people that live in the town of Saranac, but I’d like to see at least a hundred people [at the meeting],” he said.

“We’ve worked hard to get to this point and we want them to come out and express their opinion so we get it right.”

Dragon-R-Butts aims to kick butt at Dragon Boat Festival

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Lois Roberts always wants to help children. And, when she saw a special on Mountain Lake PBS last year about the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival in Burlington, Vt., she was unknowingly looking into her future and a way to do just that.

“I had thought then what a cool thing to participate in,” she said.

When it was announced this year ’s festival would benefit Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta — a camp in South Hero, Vt., that helps children battling cancer — Roberts said, “the stars aligned.”

“How could I not try to form a team and participate,” she said.

Roberts has been a supporter of Camp-TaKum-Ta since watching a video on YouTube of a girl named Grace, who attended the camp,

and then gave a testimonial about what camp has meant to her. When the Peru Lions Club — of which Roberts is a member — hosted a presentation in April from Camp Ta-Kum-Ta Executive Director Ted Kessler, she learned Grace had since lost her battle with cancer.

That only motivated Roberts even more to help children fighting the life-threatening illness.

Getting together a team for the Dragon Boat Festival hasn’t been an easy task, but Roberts has managed to find 22 people willing to take on the strenuous task of paddling and collecting pledges for their participation.

“Twenty-two people who, some I know, some I don't, but are willing to be a part of such a wonderful fundraising experience,” said Roberts.

Roberts’ team — Dragon-R-Butts — will be among more than 70 others that will compete in grueling 300-meter sprint races. Each team

member was required to pay a registration fee in addition to giving of their time for the event, said Roberts.

“Some more than a day, as we have a practice session, and we have been trying to do extra fundraising,” she said.

During the past few months, Roberts and her teammates have kept busy collecting donations that will ultimately help Camp-TaKum-Ta. Local Zumba instructor Tracy Posada even got in on the act by making a donation to Roberts’ team through proceeds from her July classes. The team has also had the Dragon Boat Festival T-shirts and hats they’ll be wearing the day of the festival signed by fans for a donation.

However, there’s still room on their shirts for the inspiration for this year ’s participation, said Roberts.

“I have asked my team to save room on their shirts so we can put ‘Paddling With Grace’ on them,” said Roberts. “In honor of Grace, who was the inspiration of this journey thus far.”

Hot Rods for Hospice returns this Saturday

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The cars will be lined up and on display as 8 Ball Billiards Café presents the 4th annual Hot Rods for Hospice.

The event, slated for this Saturday, Aug. 7, will bring together car enthusiasts and supporters of Hospice of the North Country, the nonprofit organization for whom the family-friendly event benefits.

Jay Montpelier, owner of 8 Ball Billiards Café and organizer of the event, said Hot Rods for Hospice has come a long way since it started in 2007, raising thousands of dollars for Hospice.

“Right from the get-go we knew this was only going to get bigger,” said Montpelier. “And, knowing this is only going to get bigger and bigger and better and better is really great.”

Amanda M. Bow, director for development for Hospice of the North Country, said with what the event offers, she’s not surprised it’s getting bigger.

“It takes a long time sometimes for newer events to pick up momentum, but there’s always a good crowd here,” said Bow. “It gives us an opportunity to get our name out there and promote Hospice and have fun at the same time. There really is something for everyone.”

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with registration for antique cars, classic cars, street rods, tuners, trucks and motorcycles. Cars will be on display beginning at 10 a.m., with a parade to take place

at 12 p.m., led by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department. Live entertainment, kids games, face painting, pony rides, raffles and auctions will help round out the day.

Returning this year will be a pig roast at 1 p.m.

“We did it the first year, and its back this year with a chicken barbecue,” said Montpelier, who said the pig roast was in high demand for this year.

Also new this year will be a volleyball tournament at 2 p.m. Horseshoe and pool tournaments, which have become traditions with attendees, said Montpelier, will also begin at 2 p.m.

A display of antique tractors will also be something new this year to draw the crowds.

“We’re hoping to attract even more people,” said Montpelier, who anticipates approximately 200 cars will be at this year’s event.

“We’ve already got people coming from Lake Clear, Vermont, Ticonderoga. People come from all over,” said Bow. The event will culminated at 5 p.m. with an awards ceremony. Awards will be presented to the Best in Show, Top Ten and Favorite 50.

Admission to Hot Rods for Hospice is free. The cost to register a vehicle is $15. The cost of the pig roast and chicken barbecue will be $12 for those 12 and older and $6 for ages 5-11. Children younger than 5 eat free.

Book ‘Em fundraiser exceeds expectations

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — The Chazy Public Library’s board of trustees continue to bring in funds for the new library.

The trustees recent fundraising effort, Book ‘Em for the Library, recently culminated at this year ’s Old Home Days, July 25, with the goal to raise money for a $250,000 matching grant for the new library.

The idea behind the fundraiser was for community members to raise “bail money” for overdue books. The trustees hoped each of the 10 participants could bring in about $500.

“The Book ‘Em event, money in hand that day, netted us $5852.78,” said board secretary Tina Trombly. “We were aiming for $5,000.”

Pledges were made during the Old Home Days of around $1,000, but Trombly doesn’t want to count on it until they have it in hand.

“It was very well received,” she said. “It was very positive. Some people just came up to us and said, ‘My grandchildren enjoy story hour so much, here’s some money.’”

The trustees also raffled a quilt; two, twoday camping trips; and a ring, which netted

them an additional $226.

“So we made some extra money we didn’t expect,” said Trombly.

“I was awestruck,” she added. “Everybody was just like, ‘This is important. We’ve got to do this.’ It’s wonderful; it’s heartwarming.”

The top two money makers for the Book ‘Em for the library were Linda Misiaszek of Riverside Insurance and Chris Latremore of Latremore’s Insurance, with each raising $1,000.

Other participants were, Nancy Vesco of Chazy Central Rural School; Tim Parker of Parker ’s Chevrolet; Denise Garnot of Hairstyles Unlimited; Joey Trombley of Kavanaugh Realty; Andrew West of Northern Tier Chiropractic; Kim Howley of Chazy Music Theatre; Chazy Supervisor Staub Spiegel; and Rob McAuliffe of CCRS. sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — The Samuel de Champlain Center Stage Committee continues to find new ways to raise money for the stage’s completion.

Although performances have already been held throughout the summer at the stage on Lake Street, the committee said there is still more to be done.

“We’ve got to put an overhead door over the stage to close it in,” explained committee member Steve Merchant. “We have some staining left to do. Long term, we’re looking at possibly … putting a dressing room off the back. And of course any money after that is going to go for performances.”

The next fundraiser will be a 4-person scramble golf tournament Saturday, Aug. 14, at the North Country Golf Club, 862 Hayford Road, beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

“Even if you’ve never played before, get into it just for fun,” said Merchant. “We need to do several things down there and we could really use the money, the support.”

The committee has had other fundraisers in the past, including one at 8-Ball Billiards in Plattsburgh and Bowl Mart in Champlain.

“They’ve been great,” said Merchant. “People have been big supporters.”

“I think the people, from everything we’ve been told so far, the people are really for this stage,” he added. “They’re really enjoying the

Touring the North Country’s wine country

T

here’s no need to cross the country toward Napa Valley for a wine tour, simply tour the North Country.

Lake Champlain Wines, an organization of the Lake Champlain Grape Growers Association of Plattsburgh, will be having its first wine tour, Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15.

The mission of LCGGA is to “promote grape growing and wine making in the Lake Champlain Valley with an emphasis on developing a commercial wine and grape industry.” Philip

Favreau of Stonehouse Vineyard in Mooers said the Summer Wine Tour will do just that.

“There’s now four licensed wineries and they’re trying to promote the fact that there are four wineries in the area and that people can come through and visit and buy wine at all these vineyards,” Favreau explained.

Favreau said the wineries are also trying to make people realize they can go on wine tours, walk through the vineyards and learn about cold-hardy grapes, which are grown in this area. “[Cold-hardy grapes] are grapes that don’t need any special protection,” he said. “They’ll withstand 35, 40 below zero.”

ing toward advertising and awareness of the vineyards.

“I think people are becoming aware of it,” said Favreau. “But I don’t think five years ago anybody anticipated it.”

Now, while people are on the wine tour, they’ll see how the area has been able to produce different wines, including sweet, dry and fruit.

“There’s a variety for of different kinds of wine for every pallet,” Favreau explained. “Some of these people are fantastic at what they’ve done.

These people will see a variety of different pruning techniques and different growing techniques.”

For those interested in taking the tour, the cost is $10, and will include a glass that can be taken to each of the vineyards. Participants can begin at any location, which include: Amazing Grace
