Herwood “Woody” Mayo and Joyce Mayo were crowned the king and queen of Old Home Day, an annual celebration held July 31 at Chazy Recreation Park in the town of Chazy.

Mr. Mayo is retired from the U.S. Customs Service and is an active volunteer at Sacred Heart Church and Chazy Central Rural School. He is also a member of the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department of more than 30 years and member of the Chazy Lions Club and Elks Club. Mrs. Mayo is a retired registered nurse and is also an active volunteer at Sacred Heart Church. The Mayos have been married 56 years. They have five children and five grandchildren. POTSDAM – Local of ficials fr om Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties were named to the newly formed North Country Regional Economic Development Council Thursday, July 28 during a ceremony at SUNY Potsdam.

Gov. Andr ew Cuomo made the announcement while launching the council at the Barrington Student Union in front of more than 200 guests, including business, tourism, economic development and government leaders. Similar economic development councils were launched July 28 for the Mohawk Valley and Capital Region.

“For too long, Albany has relied on one-size-fits-all economic development plans that do not take into account the unique assets and challenges of each r egion,” Cuomo said. “T oday, we ar e taking a new approach. W ith the Regional Councils, we will empower individual areas like the North Country to undertake a regionally specific plan for job cr eation and gr owth.

Summer Wine Tour returns for its second year Businesses hope to draw more attention to local grape growing

WEST CHAZY — The Lake Champlain W ines Summer Wine Tour is back for a second year.

The two-day event will r eturn Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14, with winetasting stops acr oss the North Country.

Nancy Vesco of Vesco Ridge Vineyards, Chazy, said the event will once again highlight local grape growers and winemakers, showcasing a variety of wines.

“Last year, we printed 300 tickets and ended up selling out,” said V esco, whose business will be among the stops on the tour. “This year , we’ve almost doubled the amount of tickets we’ll have available.”

This year ’s tour will feature four l ocal v ineyards a nd on e local orchard, said Vesco. Originally, there was to be five local vineyards, but a fire last weekend at Elfs Farm W inery and Cider Mill in Plattsb urgh destroyed the business and its inventory, making its owners unable to participate.

“It’s very sad we won’t have them on the tour now ,” said Vesco.

The tour will press on, however, with people like Richard

“The dif ference between hard cider and wine is the alcohol content,” said Ever ett.

“Hard cider is 7 per cent alcohol or less, but the pr ocess to make it is the same as wine ...

Anyone who has gone on a wine tour in other parts of the country and Canada know how much fun and delicious it is.”

Having tours like this helps the local economy by gr owing the local agritourism industry, said Everett.

“This is a wonderful way to let people know about each winery [and] cidery, show how we ar e gr owing, and pr omote future gr owth of this industry,” said Everett.

The tour will be held both days fr om noon to 6 p.m. and include the following locations with the following contact numbers: Amazing Grace Vineyard and W inery, 9839 State Route 9, Chazy, 215-4044; Everett Orchard, 1945 Military Turnpike, Plattsbur gh, 5632438; Hid-In-Pines V ineyard, 456 Soper St., Morrisonville, 643-0006; Stone House V ineyard, 73 Blair Road, Mooers, 493-5971; and V esco Ridge Vineyards, 165 Stratton Hill Road, West Chazy, 846-8544.

The cost of the tour is $12 per person, with tickets available in advance at each location.

The cost includes tastings and a Lake Champlain Wines commemorative wine glass. Designated drivers are encouraged.

Don’t ignore the Adirondacks

N

ow that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has set up 10 regional economic development councils around New York, we hope members of these councils don’t forget the little guys in the sticks.

That’s us.

For the most part, the Adirondack North Country region is filled with rural communities that r ely on tourism for the bulk of their private-industry jobs. And since New York failed to set up anAdirondack Regional Economic Development Council to represent the 135,000 or so people who live in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park, we must trust the thr ee councils who r epresent the Park to act in our best interests.

Asked how the most sparsely populated county in the state — Hamilton County — can compete for economic development project money against cities like Plattsburgh and Watertown in the North Country Regional Economic Development Council, co-chair Garry Douglas — executive dir ector of the Plattsbur gh-North Country Chamber of Commer ce — said, “When it comes to job creation, when it comes to economic development, ther e is no such thing as a county; there is an economic region.”

Those ar e gr eat talking points, and we know Garry is a staunch advocate for rural communities thr oughout the North Country r egion. But how does the governor explain to a small business owner in the town of Arietta — population 304 — how economic development pr ojects in the city of Watertown — population 27,000 — help his community more than 100 miles away?

The solution would be to pr opose economic development pr ojects closer to the town of Arietta, possibly in the town’s hamlet of Piseco. But that’s easier said than done.

While Hamilton County has a lone representative on the council — Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Farber — the urban areas of the region have many. After all, the chief executive or supervisor of the thr ee municipalities with the lar gest population in each region were automatically named to the councils. For the North Country region, they are the cities of Watertown and Plattsburgh and the town of Potsdam. For the Capital Region, they are the cities ofAlbany, Schenectady and Troy. How does Elizabethtown compete? How about North Cr eek, Warrensburg, Ticonderoga, Tupper Lake or

Lyon Mountain?

Not only will the 10 r egions of the state be competing with each other for part of $1 billion in economic development pr ojects, it’s safe to say that the communities and counties within each region will be competing to place their str ongest pr ojects at the top of the regional council list.

The North Country Regional Economi c Development Council r epresents Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, St. Lawr ence, Jefferson and Lewis counties. All but Jefferson ar e located wholly or partially inside the Adirondack Park’s boundary . The r emaining Adirondack counties are represented by other councils: Warren, Saratoga and Washington are in the Capital Region council; and Fulton, Herkimer and Oneida are in the Mohawk Valley council.

Will Adirondack small towns be forg otten when it comes time to decide whether to approve an economic development pr oject creating five jobs in Hamilton County versus a project creating 50 or 100 jobs in Plattsburgh? We hope not.

A five-job bump in the Adirondack Park is huge to the local economy in a place like Chestertown, but it has little impact in a city like Schenectady. The people who live here understand that, but we’r e skeptical that the number -crunchers in Albany will give more weight to urban pr ojects simply because they make the Cuomo administration look good. More jobs created = more votes.

Maybe we’r e being too cynical. Maybe we’re jumping the gun and not giving Albany enough cr edit. Or maybe we’r e just used to seeing politics get in the way of great ideas.

Creating the regional economic development councils was a brilliant idea. For that, we applaud the governor ’s leadership. Sadly, we are disappointed that he failed to see the Adirondack Park — the size of the state of Vermont — as its own economic development region. For that, we think Gov. Cuomo missed a great opportunity, and we hope we don’t pay for his mistake.

Fourth of July a hit Our 4th of July Celebration this year was amazing! Having the Patriot Flag displayed all day Friday and then the wonderful event that evening started our weekend full of pride and patriotism. Volunteering is rewarding

Library needs your support

During a dr ought, do not fertilize your trees and shrubs.

Fertilizers contain salts that can further damage the r oot system of str essed out plants.

Instead, prioritize your watering. Established tr ees, like my bir ches, will generally survive long periods of drought without too much problem. Newer trees and shrubs will require regular deep root watering. As I have mentioned before, this can be accomplished with long, slow soaking from soaker hoses or normal hoses set on a slow drip.

The farmer’s almanac predicted a hot, wet summer this year . While it has been hot, it has not been wet. Hopefully when fall arrives we will see with it the return of more typical rainfall patterns. I know that our plants, and all of the gar deners who have spent countless hours watering this summer will be thankful!

ummer is a time to be outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather and taking in everything that the season has to of fer.

Staying active doesn’t have to mean a specific exercise plan or going to the gym. Just head outside and see what you can get into. Ther e ar e many ways to incorporate outdoor activity into your family outings this summer.

Going to the playground doesn’t have to be just for the kids, have fun with them, play on the equipment, climb, swing, play and have fun. A playground can be a great gym with a little bit of cre ativity. Chances are, if your kids see you doing it, they will want to join, too.

Go for a hike, make it more interesting by looking for specific plant, bugs, or points of interest along the trail to get the kids engaged and inter ested while avoiding the “Can we turn ar ound now?” syndrome.

Go for a family bike ride, whether it be around the neighbor hood, on a bike path, or on the trails. Bike riding is a great form of exercise and fun for all. Just remember to be safe and to wear a helmet at all times. I know first-hand that you can get a great workout by teaching little ones to ride without training

Help your plants survive a drought he heat wave has pushed its way out and our summer temperatures have r eturned to mor e normal ranges — warm days with cooler nights. It’s nice. I haven’t had to turn a fan for at least a week!

While the heat has moved on, the unusually dry conditions persist in our r egion. I don’t irrigate my lawn, so it is now a crisp br own. While, it doesn’t feel as nice under bare feet and definitely does not look as nice as a lush, gr een lawn, it should r ecover just fine once the rains return. The key to having a lawn survive dr ought is to either pr ovide the lawn with regular, long soakings with an irrigation system or to let the lawn go dormant. Fertilizer and irr egular (either infr equent or short) waters can stre ss the lawn out and kill it. In the meantime, I am spending what time I would have spent mowing to watering trees, shrubs and gardens.

Drought manifests itself differently in different plants. Sometimes, the foliage of a tre e or shrub will droop and appear wilted. White pines may turn brown. Other species exhibit leaf yellowing and defoliation. Cherry and birch are two species that exhibit this behavior. My birch are doing this now, making my lawn look like it is fall instead of summer.

Unfortunately, many homeowners mistake these symptoms, think their plants have died, and dig them up unnecessarily . Many

Play Frisbee or have races on the beach. Build sand castles, dig and carry buckets of water back and forth. You’ll still get your suntan while spending quality time with your kids, all while keeping the whole family active.

Go for an after-dinner walk. One of the things that I love about summer is that it stays light out later. Instead of calling it a night after dinner , go outside and go for a walk, or just go outside and play with the kids for an hour or so.

Regardless of your activity of choice, enjoy the summer months while they last because the cold short days will be back in no time. Be a kid again, be active, and have fun.

First Niagara Bank, N.A. buys local HSBC branches Sale affects 195 locations in NY, Connecticut

andy@denpubs.com BUFFALO — First Niagara Bank, N.A., a subsidiary of First Niagara Financial Group, Inc., signed an agr eement July 30 to acquir e 195 HSBC Bank branches in upstate New York and Connecticut, including several in the North Country.

Branches tar geted for sale include those in Saranac Lake, Plattsburgh, Malone, Potsdam and Massena.

The fate of these branches is unclear at this time, according to First Niagara officials, who expect to divest certain branches in selected locations that ar e outside the company’s strategic focus, pending the outcome of the customary antitrust review.

The deal included the bank properties plus $15 billion of deposits fr om HSBC Bank USA, N.A. “We are very pleased to acquire such a high-quality franchise that gives us an optimal footprint in upstate New York and additional depth in Connecticut,” said First Niagara President and Chief Executive Officer John Koelmel. “This creates i mportant densit y in our key legacy markets and allows us to further leverage our business model with greater scale in a r egion we know so well.”

The deposit pr emium to be paid by First Niagara of 6.67 percent of the acquir ed deposits, totals approximately $1 billion, based upon May 31, 2011 balances. The transaction is expected to be completed early in 2012, subject to r egulatory appr oval and customary closing conditions.

“We’ve been building an organization to support our vision for the futur e and I’m

very pr oud of our team’s readiness to move forwar d with this opportunity on the heels of our three most recent acquisitions,” Koelmel said.

“The transaction is an exciting next step in advancing our growth strategy, str engthening the foundation in our home markets and even better positioning the or ganization for the futur e.
