MORRISONVILLE — School may be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot going on at Morrisonville Elementary School.

The school has received much recognition over the past year from Supporting Successful Strategies to Achieve Improved Results Project — a state-level program also known as S3TAIR — for being a learning institution which has implemented and sustained curriculum that aids students with disabilities. Now, Morrisonville Elementary is being recognized on the national level.

United Way has new name, new fundraising goal jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc. has begun a new year of fundraising and with a new name.

The nonprofit organization — which helps more than 35 partner agencies — has now expanded to encompass Franklin County and has adopted the name United Way of the Adirondack Region. The expansion occurred in June, and was a process several months long following the former United Way of Franklin County losing its affiliation with the national United Way last October.

John C. Bernardi, executive director of the United Way of the Adirondack Region, said there have been a number of challenges in reestablishing a United Way presence in Franklin County, but not any that have been insurmountable.

“We see the three counties as a regional community. We don’t necessarily break each out separately,” said Bernardi. “We see that we’re all neighbors and that we all have com-

mon needs and aspirations. United Way is a mechanism that helps connect people so that we can make sure that the needs of the community are being met.”

The inclusion of Franklin County into the local United Way’s focus has meant expanding not only its focus, but also its fundraising efforts, said Bernardi. This year ’s fundraising campaign team will look to raise $750,000 — a $50,000 increase over last year ’s campaign. The additional amount, however, is not solely because of the organization’s increased coverage area, Bernardi noted.

“It’s what we feel is a reasonable and attainable goal for our region,” said Bernardi, who noted the local United Way hadn’t increased its $700,000 fundraising goal since 2007. “We knew we’d eventually need to raise our goal. We know that’s the amount we need to meet the needs of the community.”

Kirk A. Stallsmith, chairman of this year ’s fundraising campaign, said increasing the amount raised will be only a part of the team’s mission.

“Our primary objective in the campaign this year is to increase participation in all

The enhanced presence in Essex and Franklin counties will also help combat an incorrect perception that organizations in those counties don’t benefit from United Way of the Adirondack Region. Organizations like the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties, Literacy Volunteers of Essex and Franklin Counties, and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Champlain Valley are just a few of the ones that help areas beyond the Plattsburgh area, said Bernardi.

“I run it to that all the time,” Bernardi said of the misconceptions. “Field offices help offset that idea and show people we’re more than just Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh ... We are very regional in nature, and we’re all connected, whether we’re in Ticonderoga, Tupper Lake, or Malone. We’re all connected from one town to the next, in a variety of ways.”

Though this year ’s fundraising campaign team met for the first time July 16, the official kick-off for the 2010-11 fundraising campaign won’t take place until this September.

three counties,” said Stallsmith. “It’s not always just [increasing] the dollar amount. The more you get participating, that builds the overall opportunity to increase fundraising efforts.”

Stallsmith, a seasoned member of both the local United Way’s fundraising team and board of directors, feels the goal is attainable, given the generosity of the North Country in past years.

“I see a group that’s excited. We just have to keep everybody engaged,” said Stallsmith. “I think the biggest challenge will be the geographic reach.”

That reach is something fundraising campaign team members like Scott Wilson doesn’t view as a problem. That’s because the local United Way has worked with OneWorkSource to establish satellite offices in Malone and Elizabethtown to ensure there is stronger representation for the organization outside the Plattsburgh area.

“I’m very excited about the satellite offices we have in each county now,” said Wilson.

“It’s great to have those additions for the local communities.”

“We needed to have a physical presence there,” Bernardi said of the Essex and Franklin county locations. “We’ll be able to hold group meetings and host functions while promoting OneWorkSource. It’s mutually beneficial for us to be there.”

The power of USB ports T

he Universal Serial Bus is very common today. Most desktop computers come with a few USB ports on the front with more on the back. The USB standard is now in its third version and firmly entrenched as a widely-used connection technology.

A seven-member consortium pioneered the USB concept in 1994. The group collectively made the decision to present the technology as open so any company could freely design USB products. Similar to the way IBM personal computers took off after IBM opened the technologies to others, USB technology took off and quickly gained widespread use.

The original design goal was to create a common physical port on the computer to act as an interface between the computer and a device. With a common port the designers envisioned the idea that adapter cards would no longer be needed. Another goal was to allow the port to accept hotpluggable devices that could be simply plugged and unplugged from a running computer.

A USB cable carries both power and signals for a device. The flat and wide end that plugs into the computer is called the A-male

The original implementation of USB transferred data at either 1.5 or 12 Mbps. The second version, referred to as Hi-Speed USB, transfers data at up to 480Mbps, which is about 40 times faster than the original version. The third and latest version of USB is called SuperSpeed USB. With USB III, data transfer speeds up to 3.2 Gbps are now

achievable.

While faster speeds are good, I think a great feature of USB has been keeping the technology backward compatible. USB III ports are designed to be fast but still able to support older USB I and II devices.

The signs of hearing loss A

ccording to the July-October 2010 edition of the Niagara County Office for the Aging News, hearing loss can affect your life in many ways.

You may miss out on talks with friends and family and telephone calls as you may find it hard to hear what the caller is saying. At the doctor ’s office, you may not catch the doctor ’s words.

Sometimes hearing problems can make you feel embarrassed, upset, and lonely. It’s easy to withdraw when you can’t follow a conversation. It’s also easy for friends and family to think you are confused, uncaring, or difficult, when the problem may be that you just can’t hear well.

See your doctor if you: • Have trouble hearing over the telephone • Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking • Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain • Have a problem hearing because of background noise • Sense that others seem to mumble, or • Can’t understand when women and children speak to you.

irby is a long-haired domestic cat that was abandoned at a local business and surrendered to the shelter. He sometimes plays a little rough but it could just be the number of animals living in the shelter. He is neutered, declawed, FeLV/FIV negative and up-to-date on vaccinations.

Ariel is a long-haired domestic cat born on or about Aug. 7, 2009, and was one of a large litter. She is very loving with both people and other animals. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and tested negative for FeLV/FIV. All she really needs is someone to return the love.

Hearing loss can have many different causes, including the aging process, ear wax buildup, exposure to very loud noises over a long period of time, viral or bacterial infections, heart conditions or stroke, head injuries, tumors, certain medicines, and heredity.

What should I do?

If you have trouble hearing, see your doctor. Sometimes the diagnosis and treatment can take place in the doctor ’s office. Or your doctor will refer you to an otolaryngologist, a doctor who specializes in the ear, nose and throat. Or to an audiologist, who is a health care professional trained to measure hearing and help you decide on the best hearing aid for you.

omulus is a large, male shepherd about 17 months old.

He is very energetic and will run if given the opportunity. He needs a fenced-in yard, and put on a leash when walked. Romulus is a great dog but can’t be in a home with cats and small children. He is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccines.

Kelsey is a young female cat brought in as part of a cruelty case along with several of her siblings. Her front leg was in really rough shape so it had to be amputated. Her back legs are still not strong but good diet should help this sweet kitty improve.

Kelsey loves to snuggle and would make a great lap cat. She is spayed and current with all her shots.

Insects aren’t always pests Food prices drop after spike

W

hen most people think of insects, bad ones come to mind. Fortunately, the vast majority of insects in the world are not pests and because every pest has a predator, many insects are beneficial.

Beneficial insects are insects that help your grow healthy plants. The most commonly thought of beneficial are the pollinators such as honey bees. But, there is a group of insects that either eat or parasitize unwanted garden pests. Knowing how to attract those beneficial insects to the garden is important.

The first step in attracting beneficial insects to the garden is to stop using pesticides. These chemicals do not differentiate between the good and the bad bugs. Be patient. If your peppers have aphids, give the ladybugs time to find the smorgasbord, eat, mate, lay eggs, and let the ladybug larvae continue to pick the plants clean.

Planting an insectary in or near the garden will help attract the beneficial bugs to the neighborhood. An insectary is a garden plot or section of the plot dedicated just for the insects. The garden can be a landscape bed right near the garden, or several small plantings interspersed among your current flowers or veggies.

Flowers such as fennel, yarrow, and dill, and composite flowers, such as daisies, cosmos, and zinnias, are two important flower

shapes that attract insects who, in the adult phase, feed on nectar and pollen but whose larvae are voracious predators and parasites.

Some of these insects include hoover flies, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.

Low cover is important for ground beetles that feed at night on slugs, cutworms, and root maggots. This cover can be low-growing herbs, mulch, flat stones, or boards.

Taller plants are important for predators such as stink bugs and praying mantids. Many times these large, predatory insects hide so well in the tall plants, that we don’t even notice they are there!

Like all living things, beneficial insects need water. This need can be met by simply placing a water-filled saucer with some rocks in and around it in the garden. Most of these insects have wings and will move out of the garden if water is not available.

With some time and an understanding, even the most bug-squeamish gardeners can come to appreciate the importance of beneficial insects and biodiversity within the garden!

arket Basket prices fell back to $93.25, down from $95.81 in May, and up only 1 percent from $92.01 last June. Interestingly, the prices remained higher through the first two weeks of the month, but dipped in the second half to bring the totals down overall.

The lower total for the 41 items included in the Market Basket came from decreases on canned goods, meats, dairy products and miscellaneous items.

The totals for produce, canned goods, drinks and breads, cereals and grains remained stable for the month. For the year, meats were 9 percent higher.

A pound of yellow onions fell 15 percent this month but is still 40 percent higher than June 2009. Iceberg lettuce was on sale at many grocery stores bringing the average price down 20 cents a head. Dole bananas continue to be a bargain at all stores.

The cost of canned goods remained stable for the most part with the exception being a slight rise in the cost of Starkist chunk light tuna, up after a several month decline in price to 99 cents last month.

Cuts of meat that are popular for grilling were on sale in most stores surveyed. Sirloin and chuck steaks and pork chops were all less costly than in May. Whole frying chickens and Oscar Meyer sliced bacon were both up for the month and year.

Border Patrol apprehends stowaways using high-tech inspection equipment ROUSES POINT — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers apprehended two Honduran nationals as they attempted to leave the United States and illegally enter Canada as stowaways aboard an outbound freight train.

CBP officers, using rail gamma-imaging technology at the Rouses Point Rail Facility, discovered the two individuals hiding in an empty rail car.

On July 5, at approximately 3 p.m., CBP officers were performing an inspection scan of a departing Canadian Pacific Railway train using a Non-Intrusive Inspection technology system.

The officers discovered anomalies consistent with that of stowaways in

one of the freight cars. CBP field operations officers, with assistance from CBP Border Patrol, ordered the train to come to a controlled stop and converged on the rail car. The suspects were discovered hiding on the inside of an empty rail car and were immediately taken into custody by CBP officers and agents.

The stowaways were later identified as 20-year-old Erick Rodriguez and 35-year-old Juan Carlos Fuentes, both Honduran nationals lacking the proper documentation to enter or remain in the U.S. Record checks performed by CBP Border Patrol revealed Fuentes was previous arrested and convicted in the U.S. on charges of second-de-

gree rape involving a minor. He was formally deported from the U.S. in 1999.

Both subjects admitted they entered the U.S. illegally on foot in Texas, where they boarded a bus en route to Plattsburgh. They then took a taxi to Rouses Point where they were dropped off near the train track before boarding the empty rail car.

Fuentes was arrested and charged as an aggregated felon with illegal re-entry into the U.S. with permission. Rodriguez was charged with illegal entry without inspection. Both subjects are being detained in Clinton County Jail pending prosecution and deportation.

The report is a community service sponsored by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Moose dies in Dannemora L

ast week, residents of Dannemora were excited to learn of a large moose feeding from a bird feeder in the side yard of a local residence on the General Leroy Manor Road.

In the heat of the day, as temperatures topped the 90-degree mark, a large crowd of on-lookers gathered along the highway while attempting to get a glimpse of the massive animal.

The numerous cars parked along the roadside soon drew the attention of the state police, who dispersed the crowd of spectators.

The moose apparently appeared to be in distress and when it later collapsed, troopers called the Department of Environmental Conservation.

A state DEC wildlife biologist responding to the scene found a yearling moose that was believed to have died from heat stroke.

Upon examination, the biologist reported the young, bull moose had an internal body cavity temperature of 107 degrees.

It was believed to have died of heat stroke, which typically sets in when body temperatures reach 104 degrees.

Moose are a circumpolar, boreal species. They are typically found in the cooler climates of boreal forest areas across the Northern Hemisphere.

While they thrive in such cold weather environments, moose are easily stressed by overheating, and by other factors such as predators, or the prying eyes of spectators.

They don’t do well in situations where there is a combination of high heat and humidity. In such conditions, they prefer spending time in water.

However, it wasn’t heat that did him last week.

The necropsy performed by DEC revealed the true cause of death was brain worm, a neurological disease commonly transmitted by white-tailed deer.

By DEC estimates, there are currently between 500 to 600 moose in the state. Brainworm is a major concern, according to DEC wildlife biologist Ed Reed, who explained, “Brainworm is still a problem.

That’s probably why the moose in Dannemora was still wandering around in the heat. We’ve been seeing problems with brain worm primarily in areas with high deer densities such as Rensselaer and Washington counties, where the deer density is greater than 8-10 animals per square mile. ” “Deer have brain worm but it doesn’t affect them as it does moose. Deer pass the nematode in their feces, where it is picked up by snails, which act as a host”, Reed revealed, “And they [snails] deposit it on the leaves and grass.”

Moose, which are primarily browsing animals that eat the leaves, twigs, and buds of hardwood and softwood trees.

It is easy to see how the animals can contract brain worm, which frequently causes cerebrospinal nematodiasis, a disease of the nervous system, that often, results in death. They can consume nearly 40-60 pounds of browse every day.

Fortunately for moose, the deer density in the Adirondacks ranks among the lowest in the entire state. It is one of the major factors responsible for their return and ultimate survival. In fact, the moose that died in Dannemora may not have been a local resident, since the animals are known to travel great distances.

The animal’s tendency to range far and wide has created additional problems. Due to their propensity to travel, a moose could be in Washington County one week and in Clinton County by the next. This ranginess is also responsible for the ever

This is some good news for people that happen to experience a close encounter with a moose while driving, as the New York State Legislature has amended section 11-0915 of the Environmental Conservation Law concerning the disposition of moose carcasses resulting from vehicle collisions.

The revised amendment now allows people who accidentally kill a moose and damage their motor vehicle, to obtain a permit that allow them to keep the carcass. While the measure offers little consolation for wrecking their car, a large quantity of moose steaks and burgers can certainly serve supplement the family budget while the car is undergoing repair.

Tournament celebrates 15th year helping Hospice North Country Golf Club event raises $40,000 in memory of Carol Wallett

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — When it came to establishing an event in memory of her late mother, Alyssa Favro said a golf tournament would have been the only thing that made sense.

“It made sense to have a golf tournament, because she was obsessed with golf,” said Favro.

“If it was raining and no one else was on the golf course, she would be,” said Favro’s father and Carol Wallett’s husband, Bob Wallett.

When his wife passed away from cancer 15 years ago, Wallett said he wanted to do something to both honor his wife’s memory and help Hospice of the North Country, which provided care for her during her final days.

Wallett recalls having a conversation with former county administrator Bill Bingle, who had worked with Wallett’s wife, with the two of them putting their heads together to come up with the perfect event.

“We were casually discussing helping Hospice and just decided on a golf tournament, inviting our friends and family, mainly just to have a good time and raise a little money,” said Wallett. “I think we raised $1,500 or $2,000, which we thought was pretty cool.”

Fast forward to the present and the annual Carol Wallett Golf Tournament has gone from an event with a few friends and family members and a few thousand dollars in donations to the biggest fundraiser for Hospice of the North Country.

“We’re probably going to hit $40,000 this year,” Wallett said as he sat in the clubhouse of the North Country Golf Club July 17.

“It’s amazing how big it’s grown and how much money we’ve been able to raise for Hospice,” said Favro. “It’s meant a lot for us to be able to give back to them. I’m just in

Wallett and Favro noted that’s because of the support the event has received year after year.

“It’s a community event now,” he said.

“We go to businesses and individuals and we solicit gifts, either for the silent auction we have or as hole sponsors. The community is so generous.”

“I’m not surprised,” Wallett added about the support the tournament receives, “because it’s such a great cause. But, obviously, I’m still overwhelmed and humbled we can raise that kind of money.”

Kent W. Brooks, executive director for Hospice of the North Country, said the organization wouldn’t know what to do without the Wallett family’s continued commitment to hosting the tournament.

“It goes a long way in the avenue of helping us to provide above and beyond the minimum to our patients,” said Brooks. “It’s been 15 years now and it just seems to keep growing. Everybody just wants to continue to honor the memory of Carol and, at the

same time, support our great cause.”

“It’s amazing because there are a lot of golf tournaments for nonprofit and for different organizations all over the place,” said Amanda M. Bow, Hospice’s director of development. “The fact this tournament has such success and staying power proves people loved Carol, love Bob and want to support Hospice.”

Knowing the tournament is considered a great success is something his wife would be proud of, said Wallett.

“She’d be very humbled, actually,” he said, noting his wife wasn’t one to ever want to make a fuss over her own accomplishments or want to be the center of attention.

“She’d actually be embarrassed that her name’s attached to it,” said Favro. “But, she’d be very impressed and very proud on how much it helps Hospice.”

Those who were unable to participate in the tournament are still able to make donations in memory of Carol Wallett to Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901.

Invisible Fence donation to help emergency responders help animals

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAZY — The Chazy Volunteer Fire Department is now able to help rescued animals breathe easier thanks to a donation from one local business.

Invisible Fence of Champlain Valley presented the department with an animal rescue oxygen mask kit July 19, now giving the department specialized equipment for animals that suffer smoke inhalation.

Invisible Fence representative Kevin Carter presented the donation to department members, explaining how the mask is used similar to an oxygen mask for human smoke inhalation victims. Carter, who has pets of his own, said he personally felt proud to make the donation on behalf of Invisible Fence as part of the corporation’s “Project Breathe” initiative.

“I consider my dogs part of my family,” said Carter. “I treat them like my kids and I know there are a lot of other families out there that feel the same way about their pets. If there’s one success story we can get out of all of this, if we can maybe save the life of one pet, it’s definitely worth it.”

Dan Harriman, rescue captain for the department, said the donation was one that was very appreciated and could

prove useful in saving the lives of many animals.

“I think it’s great,” Harriman said of the donation. “We do have fires in the area where animals can suffer from smoke inhalation. This will be something we’ll be able to have on one of our first responding trucks to be able to assist those animals.”

While the primary focus of rescue crews at a fire scene is in saving and preserving human lives, Harriman said he understands how people devastated by the fire are just as devastated at the thought of losing their family pet.

“Once the family is out, a lot of times they’re concerned about animals if they have them,” said Harriman. “It becomes another part of us saving lives.”

Carter said Invisible Fence plans to provide similar kits to other departments in the area, noting the donation to the Chazy department was “the first of many more.”

“We want to do this for all our emergency service providers in Clinton and Essex counties,” said Carter. “We’d like to have one on each department’s vehicle.”

That would be all right with Harriman.

“It’s great to be able to get a donation.

Any donation helps the department,” he said.

BUFFALO — The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations has announcing whole tomatoes and peppers imported from Canada are prohibited in personal baggage until further notice.

Effective June 21, CBP and the U.S. Department of Agriculture began prohibiting the entry of whole tomatoes and peppers in passenger bags and vehicles due to the fact Canada imports peppers from countries known to have been affected by the False Codling Moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick).

Canada also imports tomatoes from countries known to have been affected by the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta. Both of these pests have the potential to cause severe economic damage to American agriculture.

Sliced tomatoes or peppers entering from Canada may be imported after CBP Agriculture inspection.

Whole peppers and tomatoes grown in the U.S. may be imported after CBP Agriculture inspection. Stenciling or other proof of country of origin on the item or container is required for importation.

Commercial shipments must be accompanied by a certificate of origin which identifies the country of origin and the name of the greenhouse in which the products were grown.

Recognition Continued from page 1 In a July 15 interview, S3TAIR regional facilitator Job Thomas revealed Morrisonville Elementary was to be one of three schools in New York State to be highlighted at a symposium in Washington, D.C., July 19-22. The focus of the symposium was to demonstrate how states utilized federal grant funding to improve education.

Last year, Morrisonville Elementary was observed by S3TAIR and found to be one of approximately 50 schools validated for outstanding practices in three instructional areas — reading/literacy instruction, positive behavioral intervention and supports, and effective delivery of special education instructional services. Morrisonville Elementary was and continues to be the only school in the entire state to receive validation in all three areas.

It was under the direction of Bradley J. Ott, now retired principal of Morrisonville Elementary, that Thomas credits much of the progress made at the school.

“Mr. Ott’s effective transformational leadership over the past 20 years has really contributed

positively to all the things that we see at Morrisonville,” said Thomas.

In addition to working collaboratively with Morrisonville Elementary staff over the years, Thomas said Ott’s continued efforts to publicize the school’s triumphs in the media was something that helped the school stand out.

“It’s just another example of some of the things that he has done as a leader that’s really contributed to the school and obviously improved outcomes for not just students with disabilities, but all students,” said Thomas.

Ott said he was honored to learn of the recognition, calling it an opportunity that comes along “once in a lifetime.”

“These accolades just keep coming but they’re not something that we even went looking for,” said Ott. “It’s a tremendous feeling that I think my colleagues and I need to take a step back to truly appreciate. National recognition like this doesn’t happen everyday. It’s incredibly exciting news.”

Though Ott said he was “extremely humbled and flattered” Thomas lauded his leadership, he added it was “the people who do the work” that deserve the credit.

“It’s very nice to be recognized as a contribu-

The grant will assist the school with helping S3TAIR document what Morrisonville Elementary has done to become a standout school. The money will help with hiring substitute teachers so S3TAIR representatives may conduct interviews with staff, pay for travel when staff members are invited to speak at other schools, and other necessary items for helping S3TAIR conduct its research.

Thomas said he believes by Morrisonville and other like schools sharing their recipe for success, more and more schools could reach such a level of excellence.

“I definitely think it really depends on the ability of a school district to really take a step back, reflect and say, ‘Where are we right now? What are the things we need to do to refine them? And, are there models out there that can help support us?,’” said Thomas. “It can happen in any school.”

Crown Point woman receives new home, new independence

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Valerie Hunsdon is a success story in the eyes of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency.

The agency presented Hunsdon with a ceremonial key to her new home July 2, as part of a “Welcome Home” event highlighting National Home Ownership Month. Hunsdon, a single mother of one, recently received assistance from the USDA’s home loan program and the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County.

Hunsdon said she was excited by the recognition and said the process to owning her home was a long and difficult one. Hunsdon’s journey to where she is today began more than 18 years ago, when a car accident left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Five years ago, she and her husband divorced, leaving her to move with her then 1-year-old son into her parents’ home.

“There weren’t any apartments that we’re wheelchair-accessible,” Hunsdon said.

Hunsdon said she especially thanked the LaBountys for their help in the process, becoming more than people who sold her a new home.

“Michelle and Eric were great. They were so personable,” said Hunsdon. “It’s like they’re part of the family now.”

“It has been a really great learning experience working with Valerie,” said Michelle LaBounty. “I have learned so much about her needs that will translate well for future clients who also need wheelchair accessibility.”

“It has been so great watching her family and entire community rally around her as she enters this next chapter of her life,” LaBounty added. “I feel very lucky to have met her and for the opportunity to help her build her new home.”

Second annual Streetfest offers something for everyone

By John Gereau johng@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The community of Ticonderoga will be host to the second annual Streetfest Saturday, July 31, bringing a mix of arts and craft vendors, food kiosks and other unique exhibitors to Main Street.

The event, which is quickly evolving into one of the region’s premiere family-friendly arts and craft fairs, drew more than 2,000 people during its inaugural year.

“Downtown Ticonderoga will become a festive pedestrian mall with food, live entertainment, interesting things to see, and opportunities to purchase unique crafts and gifts,” said organizer Sue Rathbun, who chairs the Ticonderoga Montcalm Partnership, sponsor of Streetfest.

To facilitate Streetfest, Montcalm Street — the main thoroughfare in Ticonderoga — will be shut down from Lake George Avenue at Sun-

shine Laundry to Champlain Avenue at Glens Falls National Bank.

The street will close at 8 a.m. for set-up, with the event kicking off at 10 a.m. Fort Ticonderoga’s award-winning Fife and Drum Corps will open the event with a performance down the center of the street, followed by other musical groups who will provide live entertainment throughout the day.

Main Street will be filled with arts and craft vendors, specialty food kiosks, sidewalk sales, a farmers market, and a display of antique cars, boats and other exhibitors.

There will be plenty for kids to do as well, with hands-on arts demonstrations and Penelope the Clown offering face painting and balloon art throughout the day.

Participating vendors will range from artisans specializing in wood crafts, toys, jewelry, glass and rustic furniture to food vendors offering tasty treats like snow-cones, deep-

fried Oreos, fried dough and other specialties.

In addition, downtown businesses will join the fray with kiosks and specials, creating a downtown atmosphere not unlike Burlington’s popular Church Street.

“Our first Streetfest last year was a great success,” Rathbun said, noting planning for this year ’s event began even earlier. “We’re determined that this year will be bigger and better. We look forward to welcoming people from the whole area of northern New York, as well as our friends from across Lake Champlain in Vermont.”

The event will close at 4 p.m. with the street reopening to vehicles at 5 p.m. A list of participating crafters, car and boat dealers and the location of each will be available to visitors as they enter either end of Streetfest.

Since the event is weatherdependent, a rain date has been scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 1.

Fun, food, entertainment, arts, crafts, antique cars and boats and more can be found at Streetfest 2010, coming Saturday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to downtown Ticonderoga.
