Adirondacks Unplugged returns Music festival to help restore local theatre

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHATEAUGAY — The Chateaugay Rotary Club is looking to get people plugged into Adirondacks Unplugged.

The summer music festival, now in its third year, is raising money to restore a piece of the town’s history — the Chateaugay Theatre on East Main Street.

Bill Fitzgerald, promoter for Adirondacks Unplugged, said the Chateaugay Rotary Club has teamed up with the Chateaugay Revitalization Committee and McCadam Cheese to host this year’s event, slated for Thursday, Aug. 5, at at the Chateaugay Recreation Park on State Route 374.

“This initiative is one the entire community has embraced,” Fitzgerald said of the theatre’s restoration. “And, once complete, it will be a great source of pride and activity for the community.”

The first phase of the estimated $90,000 restoration will involve a complete renovation of the more than 400-seat theatre. Improvements to the theatre’s lighting, sound and decor will be among the chief concerns addressed, said Fitzgerald.

“We’re about there with all the fundraising

that’s required,” he said. “We’re hoping that with this event it will put us over the top so we can begin this project very soon.”

Additional improvements would be planned “down the road,” said Fitzgerald, but, for now, the idea is to establish a place from which to start what he feels will be a success story for Chateaugay.

“We’re looking at this first phase as a way to get this theatre up and running and to create some buzz in the community and the surrounding area,” he said. “The more activity and people we can bring to the community with this as the centerpiece, there’s no limit to what might be possible for Main Street.”

Once restored, Fitzgerald said it’s quite possible the local high school could host a movie night once a month in the theatre and a theatre camp in the summer.

“We’ve even talked about connecting with the theatre program at [the State University of New York at Plattsburgh],” said Fitzgerald. “This would be a great opportunity for a student who might be looking for an internship to run a theatre for the summer for college credit.”

“This really is a case where if we can get this facility renovated as we have planned, there’s no limit as to what can happen,” he added.

Though keeping in mind plans for the future, Fitzgerald’s sights are still set very much on the present, particularly on making Adirondacks Unplugged a success. And, by bringing in country-rock band Stonehoney to headline the event.

“They are just an awesome country-rock band,” he said.

Stonehoney, which just released their debut album, “The Cedar Creek Sessions,” just began a national tour, with Chateaugay fortunate enough to be a stop on the list, said Fitzgerald.

“We were able to get their attention,” said Fitzgerald, who credited the idea to Drew Scott, a disc jockey for Wild Country 96.5 in Malone.

“People are going to be thrilled with the quality of music that we’re going to bring.”

Opening for Stonehoney will be Plattsburgh rock band The Angry Neighbors and Burlington’s Caroline O’Connor, who is originally from Chateaugay.

“The whole idea behind Adirondacks Unplugged is to create this brand that’s synonymous with great music and entertainment,” said Fitzgerald, adding he believed this year’s mix of up-tempo artists does just that. “It’s going to be a really good time and affordable for everybody.”

The Aug. 5 event will open at 5 p.m. with performances scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

ELLENBURG CENTER — Although Nathan LaBombard thinks people may see lawn mower races as just a “redneck gathering,” the annual event is something that brings in needed funds to the Ellenburg Center Volunteer Fire Department.

The Northern New York Lawn Mower Races will be held at the fire station, Sunday, July 25, at 1 p.m. The event, which is in its fourth year, has brought out nearly 120 spectators in the past. “[NNYLMR] actually charge their racers an entry fee and forward that money to the fire department,” said LaBombard, who serves as rescue captain for the department.

A portion of the entry fee money is then used for trophies because “they race strictly for bragging rights,” LaBombard explained.

NNYLMR, which is based in Malone, travels the North Country and raises money for local fire departments.

“We decided to have them come out here and give it a try,” said LaBombard when he first heard of the group.

“A couple of their mowers will do 96 miles an hour,” LaBombard said. “It’s just like a race car. You’ll see crashes. You’ll see people go off the track.”

“But, we’ve never had anybody get hurt,” he added.

LaBombard hopes the races draw people out, as the money is needed for training and equipment for the department.

“We run on a very limited tax budget,” he said. “[The taxes] basically covers the trucks, station and most of our gear. But, [the money raised is] to further educate EMS personnel, and further train firemen.”

The event, which will be held behind the fire station at 1 Church St., has a $5 entry fee. Food and nonalcoholic beverages will also be available.

“You’ll never look at your mower the same,” laughed LaBombard.

Vilas Home kicks off summer concert series

PLATTSBURGH— If you heard music coming from Beekman Street last week, you weren’t alone.

The Samuel F. Vilas Home kicked off their first annual summer concert series with a performance by folk musician Gary Sargeant July 8. Every Thursday through Aug. 26, the Vilas Home will host a free concert at 6 p.m. on the back lawn of the property. “[The residents] love the storytelling, they love the singing, they love the family atmosphere that it brings, so we couldn’t ask for better,” said activities director Juliet Dubay.

Dubay said at the first event, only 23 of the 43 residents attended the event because of the hot weather.

“The 23 that did participate stayed for the entire hour and enjoyed it so much. It was very comfortable; under the tent it was very breezy,” said Dubay.

While the idea behind the music is to be entertainment for residents, it goes beyond that, said Dubay. The resident council — which consists of Vilas residents — is openly inviting community members as well as giving the

“The residents of Clinton County have treated our residents with an abundance of kindness and sincerity over the past years the home has been in operation,” said Dubay.

“Family involvement was one of the reasons [for holding the event], the other was to give back to the community. We have so many volunteers that come through here. They come and do activities, they drive the residents, and we want to say, ‘Please come here and relax.’”

Another reason to invite the public, said Dubay, is to support the local musicians performing.

“They’ve been so loyal to us over the years that this was a way to announce them,” she said. “Some of them haven’t played, some of them are up and coming musicians and haven’t played for other facilities, and we’d like them to get more exposure.”

Artists scheduled to perform include Jack Wolfe & Joanna Dascoli, Roy Hurd, The Sweet Adelines, Charlie Stone’s The Split Rock Band, The Meter Maids, The Castaways, and Rod Driscoll. The full schedule of the summer concert series can be found on the Vilas Homes Web site at www.vilashome.com.

Supporting local art at Stony Brook Gallery

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — If you’re in search of art by local artists, Stony Brook Gallery has more than enough to suit your need.

The gallery, located at 72 Mason St., had its grand opening last November.

“It started with 13 of us,” explained potter Nancy Redinaro. “Now, we’ve moved up to 16 artists.”

According to Redinaro, the gallery is actually an artists cooperative, which features various forms of art from paintings to photography to jewelry and sculptures.

“Everybody’s different,” she said.

The studio was formally a playhouse for Redinaro’s children when they were younger, but when they went off to college, she decided she wanted it to house her pottery, and the idea expanded from there.

“We’re [all] just chipping in time and having a place that we can all have a place to sell our art,” she explained.

Although the gallery received a lot of customers when it first opened, Redinaro has noticed business has been slowing down. To bring more people in, the cooperative will have an art opening every month, featuring three to four artists.

The first opening, titled “Prints Pots and

Paints,” was held July 9, and featured Redinaro’s pottery, along with paintings by Catherine Hartung and photography by Russ Hartung.

“Cathy and Russ Hartung, they just brought all their big pieces,” said Redinaro.

“And me, because I was the head of this whole thing, I figured ... I should step it up and do it, too.”

During the event, there was also live music by Redinaro’s husband, Jeff, who performs with Zip City.

“He offered to do the music, which is really fun,” she said.

The next opening will be held Sunday, Aug. 15, from 2-4 p.m., at the gallery, and will feature Green-Loc bags by Wendy Patunoff, children’s books and illustrations

by Amy Guglielmo, jewelry by Mark Stone, and wearable art by Annette Yarden.

“To come out and see the work of the local artists is really important,” Redinaro said. “We’re trying to get people to come, listen to music, eat appetizers and look at this beautiful artwork.”

“We have a really good thing here,” she added. “It’s beautiful and the work is incredible.”

Getting into the IT field Some earth-friendly habits

M

any job openings ask that candidates have formal training and some work experience. Several may also require additional things like a license, a certain educational level, a certification, or a combination of those things.

Many jobs in the information technology field fall into the formal training and some experience category but certification is often what sets candidates apart.

The IT field has an abundance of certifications in many areas ranging from Web design, to computer repair, networking, security, and systems administration to name a few. Various entities sponsor certifications with a number of them being proprietary vendors like Cisco, Microsoft, and VMware. There are also vendor-neutral organizations like CompTIA. Some certifications expire after a period of time and others simply age out due to technology advancement. Most certifications are earned by passing an exam.

There are many paths that lead to passing a certification exam. An individual may take formal classes from a college or trade school, self-study using one or a combination of information sources, or attend high-intensity training aimed at a particular certification.

The formal class route is self-explanatory. Self-study usually involves printed material, video materials and often a personal training lab.

The personal training lab is something I routinely emphasize to the kids in my classes as it’s an interactive way to learn and apply textbook concepts and maintain their knowledge too. It doesn’t have to be an expensive setup; older but still serviceBy Ron Poland able equipment is easily obtainable with a little research. I scour eBay for deals occasionally finding some very good ones.

The high-intensity training isn’t for anyone.

Often referred to as “boot camp” it’s a training style where information in large volumes is covered in repetitive fashion during a relatively short period. The end game is successful exam passing and ultimate earning of a particular certification.

Reuse produce and shopping bags. A good choice is to use the cloth shopping bags for sale at most grocery stores.

Consider packaging. If we purchase foods that are not excessively packaged, we will reduce our trash. Choosing foods minimally packaged or bought in bulk, not only saves money, but also helps the planet.

Eat locally-grown food. Most of the food we eat in the US has traveled more than 1,500 miles to reach our grocery store.

Whether by truck, plane or train, a lot of fossil fuel is used to transport food. Most communities now have Farmers’ Markets opening for the season. Eating locally-grown food whenever possible saves fuel and reduces carbon dioxide emissions, and supports your local economy. And, best of all, the food usually tastes better.

hen you’re enjoying your golden years, the last thing you probably want to do is to spend a lot of time taking on monumental projects. But, doing your part to help the environment can be very easy.

Making reductions. The best way to start helping the environment is reducing the amount of waste put into it. The key is to change your habits and think how you can cut down the amount of waste created throughout your day whether it be at home, work or when shopping.

Cancel unwanted catalogues. Most American households receive between 75 and 100 printed catalogues a year which equals a lot of dead trees.

Conservative cooking. You can save energy by turning off the water once it boils when cooking eggs or vegetables. You don’t need sustained boiling to thoroughly cook these foods.

Frugal fueling. Make sure your gas cap is on tight. Millions of gallons of gasoline evaporate into the atmosphere each year due to loose, damaged or missing gas caps.

Toilet tweaking. Install low-flow toilets which use 1.6 gallons of water compared to 5 or more gallons with older toilets. There are also dualflush toilets, which have one button for liquid

Return of Japanese beetles

T

here is no denying it now. The Japanese beetles have made their yearly return to aggravate area gardeners. One beetle won’t do a lot of damage, but as we know they often don’t come alone. Large groups of feeding beetles will start at the top of a plant and work their way down. The early arrivals release hormones that attract others to the plants. In addition the females release sex pheromones, attracting males to the area. Odors released from the beetle-damaged leaves also assist in attracting more beetles to the area.

One way to control Japanese beetles is to not plant trees and shrubs the beetles like to eat. This list includes Japanese and Norway maples, birch, pin oak, rose of Sharon, apples, plums, cherries, roses, willows, lindens, hollyhock, grapes, and even poison ivy! Removing them by hand does help since the beetles attract beetles. You can hand pick, hose them off, or shake the plant over a bucket of soapy water. Early morning is a great time to work since the beetles are sluggish. Highly valued plants can be covered with row cover or even cheese cloth.

There are chemicals that can be used on Japanese beetles. If you do use this route, make sure to thoroughly read the label and follow the instructions. This is especially

important if you are spraying anything you wish to later eat. Remember all insecticides can harm bees, so do not spray plants with open flowers.

Many people love to use the Japanese beetle traps on the market. Unfortunately, these can draw thousands of beetles to the area each day and research has shown these traps attract more beetles than are caught. If used, your plants could suffer more damage than if no traps had been used!

The other method that does not offer full control is grub control. While it is true beetle grubs do feed on your lawn’s roots, using grub control does not guarantee the beetles will not fly in from a neighboring area.

Grub control should only be used as a way to control grub damage.

Fortunately, the beetles are with us for only a few weeks each year. Adults only live for about 30-45 days. My advice is to find some kids, give them a jar of soapy water, and send them out each morning.

Bigotry is “sticking to opinion, belief, etc. without reason and not tolerating other views.” I was a sinner, a religious hypocrite, until Jesus saved me from my sin and religion in a born-again experience. One said, “I hope no one identifies you with that guy, Phelps.” Another, “You’re right on; I wish more people would write in like that.” And another, “You should’ve told them why you object to the use of a rainbow as a symbol in their ‘gay pride month’; that’s God’s rainbow of promise.”

PLATTSBURGH — The South Plattsburgh Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a Community Partnership Award by the Clinton County Health Department.

The CCHD acknowledged the South Plattsburgh Volunteer Fire Department as a staunch public Health partner with a shared vision of public safety and preparedness. The South Plattsburgh Fire Department’s work to upgrade its facilities came to fruition and resulted in a state-ofthe-art community center of which their leadership willingly shares mass clinics (both human and animal) with a minimum of bureaucracy.

Beyond this routine connection, they proved to be true preparedness partners by stepping forward at the height of the H1N1influenza pandemic to provide CCHD a staging center, meeting every storage criteria that was essential to efficient operations. Summer heat brings schools of bass The heat of the summer arrived in the Adirondacks last week, bringing with it a mix of brilliant sunshine, soaring temperatures, high humidity and a series of passing thunderstorms.

The string of 90-plus, degree days drove many local residents to the rivers and lakes seeking relief from the heat. At the same time, the warmer temperatures drove both bass and trout to the deeper waters looking for colder, more oxygen rich conditions.

Across the region, residents and visitors alike flocked to the beaches, boat launches and local swimming holes. It was a good week to enjoy the outdoors.

Obviously, New Yorkers have been visiting their local waters quite regularly, for even though NY state residents do not have an opportunity to enjoy a full four seasons of water based recreation.

Despite this fact, New York has been ranked among the top ten boating states in the country according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, (NMMA).

As expected, Florida heads the new list of top ten boating states with annual boat sales of $1.2 billion in 2009. The study reveals that New Yorkers invested over $381 million dollars on boats and boating related recreation last year.

The college anglers will take off from Plattsburgh Boat Basin located at 5 Dock Street in Plattsburgh at 6 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the boat basin as well beginning at 1 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

It is with great sadness that I note the recent passing of another extraordinary, North Country outdoorsman. Marshall Fish of Westport died last week. Although renowned as a gunsmith, a trade he practiced for over 65 years, Marshall was also a crack shot and a wise mentor.

His marksmanship skills with a rifle were once featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, when Marshall cut a playing card in half, edgewise, while shooting over his shoulder and taking aim with the aid of a handheld mirror.

His abilities in dealing with sportsmen and women were no less skilled and he aided many outdoor enthusiasts in the pursuit of their hobbies. Marshall was always a great source of reliable information and was especially keen on the art of blackpowder shooting, long before the advent of smokeless powder and inline rifles.

A longtime collector of Winchester Model 94, lever action carbines, Marshall was especially distraught when we spoke in 2006. He was outraged that U.S. Repeating Arms, under the Winchester brand, had announced that they would no longer manufacture the “gun that won the west”.

The company’s move signaled the end of an era, and so does Marshall’s passing.

Although Snook has yet to take a stress test, he is also certain he will be coming off his blood pressure medication.

For Snook though, the experience of the program not only affected him, but his family as well.

“My wife has lost almost 25 pounds,” he said. “We eat healthier at home.”

Snook is also working to help his mother and sister lose weight, through support and helping them to count calories. His personal goal is to lose 60 more pounds.

Exercise and women over 40 W

eight training is an important part of any exercise program. However, for women over the age of 40 in particular, it can really boost your metabolism and help you get the body you are looking for.

Many of the common issues women over the age of 40 face can be addressed thought lifting weights — Body fat, stress, weakness, insomnia, osteoporosis, poor balance, etc.

Many women older than 40

will gradually lose healthy muscle mass and bone density.

Strength training for these women actually helps rebuild muscle tissue and increases bone density. Reports also indicate a moderate strength training program can also combat the effects of diabetes, arthritis, and depression. Your body will be stronger and leaner. You will naturally have more energy and a more positive, confident outlook. Everyday tasks such as carrying groceries, holding

children, and climbing stairs all become easier. Strength training also promotes healthy tendons, ligaments, and joint function.

There seems to be a common misconception amongst women lifting weights or strength training will cause them to build bulky muscle and lose their feminine look.

Developing bulky muscles requires high levels of testosterone, which women lack. The more natural response is for a

woman’s body is to become more lean and toned. Your arms and legs will take on an attractive shape and curve.

The Women On Weights program I’ve developed addresses the many issues women over the age of 40 face. I’ve recently revamped my program to include more interesting and fun exercises that can be done anywhere. At home, in my studio, outside, whatever your needs are, I can design the right program for

you. There are many options with my new “Women On Weights” program including the ability to e-mail or print out your program for home use.

PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Clinton County 4-H is encouraging kids to explore the fun side of science.

The organization will host “4-H Summer Scientists,” a free program for elementaryand middle school-age youths in Clinton County beginning next month. The program, explained coordinator Alexa King, will be held a three locations — Saranac Town Hall in Saranac, Northern Adirondack Central School in Ellenburg Depot, and the Ted K. Community Center in Plattsburgh.

“We went to schools asking kids what they wanted to learn about,” King said of deciding on the curricula.

As a result, children at the Saranac and Ellenburg programs will learn about the science of rocketry and flight, giving them an opportunity to build rockets, gliders and planes. Children at the Plattsburgh program will be introduced to “eco-exploring.”

King said she’s especially looking forward to bringing the program to children in the Northern Tier as past summer programs offered by CCE haven’t reached out that far.

“We haven’t had a chance to work with the young people in Ellenburg before, so I’m really excited we’re expanding to another location,” she said. “I’m really excited.”

The Saranac program will be open to youths in grades 3-6 and take place Wednesdays Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Ellenburg program will be open to youths in grades 6-8, beginning Monday, Aug. 2. That program will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and continue Tuesday, Aug. 3; Thursday, Aug. 5; and Friday, Aug. 6.

The Plattsburgh program will be open to all elementary- and middle school-age youths and also take place Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25. That program will be held each day from 1-3 p.m.

Each program is free of charge thanks, in part, to funding from the state Office of Children and Family Services. All necessary materials will be provided.

Registration is required and is first-come, first-served for the first 20 youth at each location. Though the deadline for registration is Monday, July 26, King encourages parents to still call after the deadline in the event of last-minute openings.

“We’ll have a waiting list and, in the event we still have spots open, we’ll still take signups,” said King.

“And, if parents want to come and play, too, we welcome that,” she added.

Benefit Sunday to help Ellenburg Depot man ALTONA — A benefit spaghetti dinner for Ellenburg Depot resident Richard “Rick” LeClair will be held this Sunday, July 18, at the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall, 47 Woods Falls Road.

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and include a Chinese auction, silent auction, 50/50 drawing, and motorcycle run. Entertainment will be provided by Supreme Sounds DJ service.

LeClair is a 47-year-old father of two who suffered two strokes on Mothers Day. LeClair was left partially-paralyzed from the strokes and is currently confined to a wheelchair. He is undergoing physical therapy. The benefit will help with LeClair ’s medical expenses.

Revealing the stage Samuel de Champlain Center Stage dedication next Thursday

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Although many performances have already been seen on the Samuel de Champlain Center Stage, the official grand opening is under way.

Set for Thursday, July 22, at 7 p.m., the stage will be home to four local talents, including Scott Merchant, Penny Treggett, Laura Capito and George Schnob.

“I believe they are going to be doing hometown kind of stuff,” explained Geri Favreau, member of the stage’s committee.

“They’re working [on] their performance ... but I believe they’re going to be perform separately and I think a couple of them are going to come together.”

Scott Merchant, son of committee member Steve Merchant, is a trained opera singer originally from Rouses Point. He has a bachelor of music in voice performance with emphasis in opera from the Denver University’s Lamont School of Music and has toured internationally as the lead tenor in the Tuscia Opera Festival Company.

Treggett, who also has a bachelor ’s in music, does a lot of solo work throughout the

North Country.

“And, [she] directs both the choir of St. Patrick’s [Church] in Rouses Point and the Community Singers for special events,” explained Favreau. “She’s part of our committee and she’s very very good.”

Capito, who just graduated from Northeastern Clinton Central School, is also a singer, and will be going to the Crane School of Music in Potsdam this fall.

Schnob, a local organist, will accompany the vocalists.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” Favreau said. “It’s such a great opportunity to hear all of them.”

After so much work to make the stage a reality, Favreau said “it’s like a dream come true.”

“It’s been a long time,” she said. “It was a lot of work and we’ve been so thrilled at [what] we’ve had on there so far this year.”

At both the Four Fathers performance June 17 and the Adirondack Regional Theatre performance of “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” July 1, more than 200 people filled up the lawn at the civic center.

“It’s just going to be a great event, a great concert,” said Favreau.

Healthy neighborhoods heading to Champlain CHAMPLAIN — The Healthy Neighborhoods Program of the Clinton County Health Department will be conducting health and safety surveys throughout the town of Champlain during the months of July, August and September. The brief inhome surveys are designed to identify health and safety concerns. Home safety products such as fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, first aid kits, water bottles, flashlights, asthma safety materials and child safety products may be provided by the Healthy Neighborhoods Program to program-eligible families.

During the home visit, education is provided regarding fire and burn safety, carbon monoxide poisoning prevention, lead poisoning prevention, asthma, injury prevention and many other health and safety topics. Information and referrals are also provided regarding available community resources for which a family may be eligible.

Ground broken for seventh Habitat home

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — They’ve waited more than a year, but now Laura and Christopher Welch can now see the beginnings of their new home.

The Welches received word they would be receiving a home through Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity in April 2009. On July 9, they were able to break ground on construction.

“We didn’t want to be paying for an apartment forever,” Laura said at the groundbreaking. “We’d rather pay for a home and have it be ours.

Something to call our own that we don’t have to continuously pay over and over and over again.”

The home, which will be built on land donated by Edward and Beverly Bechard, is located on Beverly Drive. It marks the seventh house built by CVHFH in the last 11 years, and the first one in Rouses Point.

“This is, to me, the start of something wonderful,” said Village Mayor George A. Rivers.

From Tuesday, July 20th through Sunday, July 25th, CCPT will run a special shuttle from the Government Center to the Clinton County Fairgrounds with stops at the Senior Center and the Champlain Centre Mall and back. The shuttle will run every hour. The first shuttle begins at 12 p.m. and the last shuttle leaves at 5 p.m. Fare will be $1 one way; free if you are 60 years of age and older with proof of age. The Noeltings were put up in temporary housing at a hotel by the Department of Social Services, but after problems with management, Noelting said he and his family were forced to leave.

“We had nowhere to go,” said Noelting.

That’s when Noelting learned about Family Promise of Clinton County, a nonprofit organization which locates housing for families who have become homeless. The organization helped provide shelter for Noelting and his family for three months, until a permanent solution was found. Most of all, Noelting credited Family Promise director Maureen E. Bradish for her compassion and dedication to helping him and his family.

“My wife and I were both full-time college students. I was trying to find work and we were both trying to support our three kids. We had a lot on our plate at the time,” said Noelting. “Maureen jumped at the chance to help us.”

When he and his family left the program, Noelting was asked to stay involved in a different capacity — serving on Family Promise’s board of directors.

“I jumped at the chance because, partly, I felt it was my way of giving back,” he said.

“Seeing the seedy underbelly of homelessness in Plattsburgh — people eating out of garbage cans and things like that — I was like, ‘This is how I can do something about this.’”

Noelting brought enthusiasm and a fresh view of the plight of homelessness in Clinton County, said Bradish.

“I still hear on a regular basis that people don’t think homelessness is a problem here,” said Bradish. “There’s especially a lot of young people who don’t know this is a problem.

What Brandon’s trying to do is help us reach people his age.”

One way Noelting is trying do that is by planning a concert at Coffee Camp Saturday, July 31. The show — which will so far feature the bands All the Rage, Crown of Lions, and the Irradiated Beef Project — is a means of building on past Family Promise fundraisers like performances by The Gibson Brothers and annual Carl King Memorial Golf Tournament.

“I wanted us to be able to reach the younger generation,” said Noelting, who noted younger people might not necessarily be attracted to Family Promise’s other fundraisers.

“I just wanted to add to what [Family Promise] was doing.”

“What Brandon’s doing is great,” said Bradish.

The July 31 concert will start at 5 p.m. The cost is $5 per person with all proceeds to go to Family Promise.

Daddy’s little helper Alek Duprey helps his mother, Kate Duprey, cut the ribbon for the second annual Scleroderma Walk in Memory of Randy Duprey June 13. The walk — held in memory of Alek’s father who passed away last year from complications with scleroderma — brought together hundreds of people to raise money for The Scleroderma Foundation, which funds scleroderma research and raises awareness of the crippling autoimmune disease. Donations are still being accepted through Kate Duprey’s Web site, www.thedupreyfamily.blogspot.com.

Golden retriever to live out golden years with new owners jeremiah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — When Caryn Collier looked at Betty’s photo, her heart melted.

The 14-year-old golden retriever mix was facing euthanization by gas chamber at an Ohio animal shelter with adoption as her only way out. That’s when Collier stepped in.

Collier had learned about Betty through her friend and co-worker, Judy Belrose.

“I had heard about this shelter in Trumble, Ohio, that had animals that were going to get put down,” said Belrose. “I was looking at what animals were available for adoption and Caryn walked by and saw Betty.”

“It kind of broke my heart that someone’s dog was in there at 14,” said Collier.

Though she and her husband, Daniel, already had five dogs of their own — and two cats — Collier wanted to give Betty a home and a chance to live out the rest of her natural life.

Collier and Belrose came across Pilots N Paws, a program that connects those rescuing animals with pilots and plane owners

who transport the animals for them at a nominal fee. It wasn’t long before Collier was connected with Chris Landers, a stockbroker from Berea, Ohio, who volunteers for Pilots N Paws. Landers, an amateur pilot who has been donating his services to the organization since last fall, said he’s involved because of his love for animals.

“It’s very rewarding because you know you’re doing something good for the dogs and helping out the shelter coordinators,” he said. “It’s also good for us to keep our flying skills up.”

Landers flew the short jaunt from Cleveland to Youngstown to pick up Betty, then flew the 470 nautical miles from Youngstown to Plattsburgh. It was the longest flight Landers has made for Pilots N Paws, he said.

“Usually I don’t go that far. The whole trip was 6.8 hours,” said Landers. “It was a long day.”

What helped was Betty’s ability to handle the long trip without so much as a bark or a howl as she remained secured in her traveling crate, said Landers.

“She was a good passenger,” said Landers. “She was very quiet. We even had to

go around a few thunderstorms along the way.”

And, when the connection between Betty and her new owner was made, it was all worth it, said Landers.

“It was just nice knowing she’s going to be around for a few years longer,” he said.

“The fact that he would do that, giving up his time and money to do that, is great,” said Collier.

So far, Betty is adjusting well to her new home and her new family — human, canine and feline.

“She doesn’t seem to mind the other dogs much and they don’t seem to mind her,” Collier said, laughing.

Belrose, who is a member of the board of directors for the Elmore SPCA, a no-kill animal shelter in the town Peru, said she was glad to see Betty receive a new home. And, while she understands how some may question her encouragement of an adoption from another shelter, even one out-of-state, she said there’s one thing to keep in mind.

“It’s not a competition,” she said. “Every animal needs a home. It doesn’t matter if it gets adopted from our facility or somebody else’s. I’d just like to see them all go into
