MOOERS — When the phone rings late at night at Joy Sarbou-Jubert’s house, she sometimes instinctively thinks her son will be on the other end of the line when she picks up the phone.

“He’d always call me at 11:37 when he was on his break at work,” said SarbouJubert. “That’s when we’d talk.”

Sarbou-Jubert lost her only son, Cody Sarbou, last year in an automobile accident. The 2007 Saranac High School graduate lost his life when his vehicle collided with another on Ore Bed

Road, just weeks after his 21st birthday.

“It’s been very hard,” Sarbou-Jubert said of the last year. “He was the only boy in our family. Out of seven grandchildren, he was the only grandson.”

The past year has been filled with “firsts” for Sarbou-Jubert and her family, but not the kind of first many would celebrate.

“Yesterday was his birthday,” she said, when being interviewed Tuesday.

“That was tough,” she said, choking back tears.

CHAMPLAIN — The Clinton County Legislature is examining increasing its occupancy tax.

“Many counties have that [percentage],” said McManus, “I’m just not sure this is the time to raise any taxes. So, I’m undecided.”

Since the county enacted its occupancy or “bed” tax in 2008, $958,418 has been generated for tourism promotion. The total bulk of the funds, with the exception of a 5 percent administrative fee that goes to the county treasurer’s office, goes directly to tourism promotion.

The Plattsburgh AM Kiwanis Club recently awarded checks totaling $12,000 to several children’s literacy organizations from funds raised from the club’s recent Dozer Day event. CHAZY — The Chazy Town Clerkʼs Office will be closed for vacation the week of Monday, July 18, through Thursday, July 21.

The office will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, July 25.

PLATTSBURGH — The United States of America has welcomed 17 new citizens.

Clinton Community College hosted the Clinton County Supreme Court's annual Naturalization Ceremony July 8, with friends and family of those taking the Oath of Naturalization with them in attendance.

The Hon. John A. Lahtinen presided over the ceremony, offering words of congratulations and encouragements to the men and women who took the oath under sunny skies on the second floor terrace of the college overlooking Lake Champlain.

“I am a grandchild of immigrants who saw this land as a land of opportunity,” said Lahtinen. “I’m a beneficiary of their legacy and you, like my grandparents, bring an infusion of vitality and vision that is important in keeping this a country that is always young at heart, a country that believes its best days are in the future and a country that will work hard to ensure that.”

“It is an honor to address you as fellow Americans,” he said.

The words rang clear in the ears of those like Adele J. Douglas, formerly a citizen of Canada. Douglas has been living in the town of Peru for the past 10 years and been active in the community, most recently serving there as grant coordinator for the town. Though she has continued to make contributions to better her community, there was one thing she couldn’t do.

“I wanted to be able to vote,” said Douglas, who added she plans to cast her ballots in all elections from town matters to county, state and

federal government and even the local school board.

“That’s why I did it,” said Alain G. Gilbert, another former Canadian citizen living in the town of Peru.

Gilbert has been living in the U.S. for the past 18 years, brought here by his job as a mechanical engineer for a Canadian company with plants this side of the border. Though he’s had his green card for the past 10 years, he felt “it was time” to make his residency more permanent.

“I wanted to make it official because it looks like I’m going to stay down here,” he said, laughing.

Andrew L. Slack, a now former citizen of the United Kingdom, also came to the U.S. because of his job, first relocating from London to Washington, D.C., 23 years ago.

Slack’s job eventually took him to Montreal, but he eventually came back across the border and settled down in Wilmington.

“Right now, I’ve unfortunately found myself in the rank and file of the unemployed, but prior to that I’ve been in the pharmaceutical arena on the commercial development side for research,” said Slack.

Now a U.S. citizen, Slack hopes his chances of finding gainful employment will increase.

“I should’ve done it a long time ago,” Slack said of becoming naturalized. “It’s just long overdue.”

Clinton County Clerk John H. Zurlo, who administered the Oath of Naturalization, congratulate each new citizen for “taking the final, formal step to become U.S. citizens.”

Increasing the occupancy tax and how it could help our economy

hat’s the big idea? Keeping our taxes down.

That’s the big idea.

The Clinton County Legislature is in the process of deciding whether to increase the county occupancy tax from 3 to 4 percent, a suggestion brought up to legislators by the North Country Chamber of Commerce. Is it a good idea? We think so.

No one likes to see taxes go up, yet the cost of providing services never goes down, and the pool from which to draw has remained relatively stagnant. So what is one possible solution to provide our communities with the services they need without putting more of a pinch on our wallets? That’s

right; you guessed it — the occupancy tax.

But, how does the occupancy tax help?

The way an occupancy or “bed” tax works is a certain percentage is built into the cost of renting a room at a hotel or motel. That money is then given to the taxing jurisdiction, in this case, Clinton County, to be used toward promoting the area to tourists. We know what you’re thinking, “So? How does that help keep my taxes down?”

Well, it does in an indirect way. Think of it this way — by utilizing less of the money generated by property taxes, water and sewer taxes, and sales tax (another issue we’ll touch on in a bit) for

promoting tourism, it puts those funds back in county coffers to be used in other areas. And, it’s important to remember that promoting tourism here is something that — and not to oversimplify it — is giving a little to get a lot.

According to County Legislator Harry McManus, the fishing tournaments that have been held locally this year to date have generated approximately $155,000 in the local economy. That’s not bad, given the concerns many have had over the lasting effects of this spring’s devastating flood. It’s also important to realize that money would likely not have been generated without proper promotion, draw-

ing people from across the border in Canada and from other places in and outside of New York State.

When tourists come to our region, they stay here, they shop here, they eat here, thereby helping all of us.

And, if we’ve created enough of a mecca for them to do all that (which we feel we have especially with a strong Canadian dollar), upping the bed tax by 1 percent really won’t be something to deter them from coming here or coming back again and again.

What about the sales tax issue? Well, in our opinion, that would likely be the second best option for generating revenue. The only downside to increasing sales tax is

that we who live here would bear the brunt of that hike.

Sure, we all know Canadian travelers who migrate south when the dollar is in their favor are the ones who spend a good chunk of money here.

However, raising sales tax with the idea that they’d help raise the bulk of the money to help cover the costs of our municipal services is highly unlikely. It’s the rest of us who live here and spend our hard-earned dollars here that would suffer in the scenario of a sales tax hike.

Nearly all bed tax revenue would come from visitors to the region, who use our services and infrastructure while they are here.

Bottom line? If the legisla-

ture is encouraged to move ahead with an occupancy tax hike, we don’t think it’d be the end of the world. In fact, it could help draw even more travelers through more promotion and ultimately strengthen our local economy.

to believe, so many more life saving and useful products have come from our space exploration quest. Satellites and long distance communication, microchips and the personal computer, smoke detectors, water filtration, cordless tools, highway grooving, memory foam, scratch resistant lenses, cat scanners, insulation, and even invisible dental braces just to name a few.

Our country needs something if not space exploration, to focus our attention beyond the everyday issue we face to once again motivate our youth and capture our nation’s imagination. Cell phones, I-Pads and computer games may be captivating to some but not all. Space exploration was both a welcomed distraction during difficult times but also a necessary outlet that channeled our collective energies and future aspirations.

NASA isn’t going away but with no schedule for accomplishments and a soft plan for its future many are predicting a lost decade or more while we labor away on the day’s pressing issues and watch our political leaders fight and argue endlessly over every issue, bringing none it seems ever to a conclusion. With both sides dug in on ideological positions and no air of compromise in the discussions we merely Band-Aid the issues until it flairs up again in the future.

One can argue that the space race and exploration is a waste of tax dollars and manpower, but until we as a nation can come together on a purpose much larger than our own self interests and create a passion and optimism that allows us to see beyond life’s trials and troubles, I fear we’ll continue to be in the malaise that seems to hold us captive today.

A recent “In My Opinion” article in our local daily newspaper, by Congressmen Bill Owens, discusses the necessity for innovation if we are to create manufacturing jobs in the United Sates. While the Congressman is essentially correct in his views on the need for American innovation, he and his colleagues in Congress continue to thwart the creation of American jobs.

He did so when he voted for Obama Care not once, but twice. Even the Congressional Budget Office had to admit that when the bill was implemented it would cost Americans thousands of jobs.

Congressman Owens voted for “card check,” in an effort to placate his union supporters. If the bill had passed, hundreds of companies would have cut their work force to stay under the “card check” radar.

Congressman Owens and most of his Democrat colleagues in Congress continue to support the double taxation of US company profits overseas. As a result more than a trillion dollars in US Corporate profits remain overseas because bringing it home would cost those companies dearly. That money could and would be used to create jobs in the U.S. Mr. Owens’s support for double taxation and what amounts to one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world has cost us jobs, more than the alleged lack of American innovation ever could.

Most recently Mr. Owens voted against forcing the EPA to issue their permits within six months. Congress passed the legislation anyway, because they wanted government to get out of the way when off shore drilling companies are willing to hire more people to find more oil. Once again Mr. Owens voted against the creation of new jobs.

Anyone can talk about the need for new jobs. It’s what we DO that counts.

Properly watering plants this summer

O

ne of the keys to successful gardening is proper watering. At first, watering seems like it would be simple and straight forward. All you need to do is take a hose or a watering can and spray it on your plants, right? Unfortunately, this attitude can get a well-meaning gardener into a lot of trouble. But, with a few rules of thumb, watering can be simple.

A lot of times gardening books will tell you that a general guideline for watering is 1 inch per week. There are a lot of problems with that guideline because it doesn't address whether it rained that week, different soil types, different plant needs, and different times of the year.

There are three main things you want to keep in mind when watering.

First, consider what type of plants you have.

Plants that have just been transplanted or just sprouted from seed, have small roots systems near the surface of the soil. These plants will need to be watered regularly since surface soil dries out faster than soil deeper in the ground.

Second, plants with deep extensive roots systems, or those that are able to store moisture (like succulents) are able to survive on less water and may rot if you keep their soil too wet.

And third, different soils drain at different rates.

Sandy soils are going to need more water more frequently than clay soils or well mulched soils.

Frequent light watering is not good for your plants because it only wets the surface of the soil which encourages roots to grow upwards in search of moisture.

The water evaporates quickly and the soil dries out, leaving the roots in hot, dry soil.

When it comes to watering, the best rule of thumb is to water as deeply and as infrequently as possible --- this can mean as much as once or twice a day for potted or newly transplanted plants or as infrequently as once a week for more established plants. Watering to make sure the soil is moist to at least 6 to 8 inches deep is best because it helps the plant grow its roots deeper into the soil. I use a soaker hose, drip irrigation, and watering wands to provide my plants with deep waterings. I also set my kitchen timer so that I don’t forget my water is on and flood my plants!

Last week, I wrote a letter pointing out that with New York State's endorsement of same-sex marriage, modern popular culture and media have now been given a green light to bombard our young children with same-sex images and role models long before they reach puberty.

We don't want the media to glamorize tobacco usage because it will encourage kids to smoke, yet we will now be fostering "Brokeback Mountain" images on our pre-schoolers.

The letter was about the harm that society will be doing to the minds and souls of our future generations, by fostering this on them before they are old enough to understand what is going on.

However, when the letter was printed in the North Countryman, your headline writer decided to give that letter a completely different meaning. Your bias on this subject came through loud and clear.

can’t resist sinking my teeth into fresh, juicy, sweet watermelon on a hot summer day. Not only is it refreshing and hydrating, it is loaded with health benefits.

Watermelon contains high levels of potassium, a nutrient that may help control blood pressure, regulate heart beat, and possibly prevent strokes.

Jack is a 3-year-old large male black and tan shepherd mix who has been at the shelter since March. Jack is generally well-behaved, tolerant of cats, and seems to get along well with other dogs. Jack is neutered and up to date on his vaccines.

Watermelon tastes great on its own or in addition to a fruit salad. Why not get creative and try it in a new recipe or vegetable salad. For a refreshing summer treat try blending watermelon into a juice and freezing into cubes.

Add the frozen watermelon juice cubes to sparkling water with a sprig of mint. Watermelon is one sweet treat that you should indulge in this summer. Just remember that as with anything, moderation is the key to a healthy lifestyle.

‘Mighty Matthew’ event to raise awareness for mitochondrial disease

PLATTSBURGH — Damian Battinelli never knew Matthew Cech.

However, once he heard Matthew’s story of living with a rare condition known as mitochondrial disease, he wanted to know more about the special little guy and how he could help.

Battinelli first learned of Matthew when Matthew was entered in a Cutest Kid Contest Battinelli was running on Facebook through his business, Damian Battinelli Photography. The winner was to get a free photo shoot and, as the story of Matthew’s condition

spread, the more votes he got and the more attention his story got, said Battinelli.

“I started getting messages from mothers wanting to take their kids out of the contest so Matthew could win,” he said.

The competition with other children entered in the contest was neck and neck, said Battinelli, until Matthew’s main competition for top honors was withdrawn by his mother. And, even though Battinelli could have left his connection with Matthew and his family at simply a free photo shoot, he felt completed to do more.

“I had never heard of his condition,” said Battinelli, who said he

began researching mitochondrial disease and reading up on Matthew’s case.

As a father himself, Battinelli said he wanted to help Matthew’s family in their fight to do whatever they can for their son in his fight of what can be a terminal disease that includes poor growth and muscle weakness among its symptoms.

“The way it was explained to me is think of a city only operating on half-power,” said Battinelli. “When I heard that, it really put it into perspective for me.”

As serious as his condition is, Matthew has stayed strong.

“I’ve seen pictures of him where his belly is bloated to the size of a

beach ball, yet he still has a smile on his face,” said Battinelli. “He could be at Boston Children’s Hospital with all these tubes in him and still smiling. To say he’s an inspiration is an understatement.”

Terry Cech, Matthew’s father, said overall, Matthew’s condition has remained consistent as he goes through treatments, though he has his “good days and bad days.”

“He’s a very happy-go-lucky kid for the most part,” said Cech. “He just completed first grade at Cumberland Head Elementary and getting ready for second grade ... how he does from day to day just depends on his energy levels.

Disc golf course expands to 18 holes, instructional clinics now offered

CADYVILLE — The enthusiasm for disc golf has caught on so much in the North Country, the sole place in the area to offer a home for it has expanded.

The Cadyville Disc Golf Course, located at the Cadyville Recreation Park on Goddeau Road, has expanded from offering nine holes to a full 18, after a high demand from the public.

Melanie Defayette, director of the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, which owns and oversees the course, said the expansion of the course has been in the works since last fall, only a few months after the original nine-hole course opened earlier that summer.

“The reason we came up with a back nine is because of the huge interest from the front nine,” said Defayette. “Everybody was clamoring to have 18 holes.”

Since the course officially opened in May 2010, the amount of traffic at the park seen for the alternative recreational sport has grown.

“Right about now, we’re averaging about 24 people a day,” said Defayette, who keeps record of coursegoers by sign-in book at the

first hole. “And, that’s just people who sign in. We know there are people who just play and don’t sign in.”

The creation of a back nine involved staking out potential holes and getting feedback from those who were using the course. In the end, grants from the Eat Well, Play Hard Program through the Clinton County Health Department and from the Eastern Adirondack Health Care Network helped cover much of the cost of installing new cement pads and baskets for the course. Recreation department employees provided in-kind labor to keep the cost down for expanding the course.

“They’ve helped make the course what it is,” said Defayette, noting recreation department employees took a “sincere interest” in the design of the course.

Considering there is no charge to use the course, Defayette said it is a valuable resource she hopes more people will take advantage of.

“I think it just adds another outdoor activity people can do that’s free,” said Defayette. “Plus, it’s something families, seniors, anybody can do. It’s for everyone.”

Defayette, laughing. “Then, it can become a little bit of a problem.”

The recreation department is trying to get more people interested in disc golf by hosting instructional clinics on the sport, too.

“We know once they try it, it’s so inexpensive to play, they’ll want to keep coming back,” said Defayette, noting discs cost, on average $5

each and can be purchased at places like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Maui North.

“I’d like to get to the point where the hotels have discs available,” said Defayette. “Because to me, if you’re on vacation or you’re the family of one of the fishermen in one of the tournaments and you want to get away, it’s not that far to

come out her to play. I’m hoping more people from out of the area will get wind of this place.”

Jason Conners of Plattsburgh and his father, Jack Conners of Malone already have and each said they love the course.

“We started coming out here last year,” said Jason Conners. “We have family that played down south and got us into it.”

Are the Conners men any good at the sport?

“No,” said Jason Conners, laughing. “We get better, but not great. But, it’s a lot of fun.”

“When I come out to see him, when it’s nice, we do this,” said Jack Conners.

AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks coming back to the North Country

Special to Denton Publications SARANAC LAKE — A popular and nationally renowned youth volunteering program is getting ready to make a triumphant return to northern New York.

Officials with the National Workforce Investment Board announced last week that Ameri-

Corps is returning to the North Country.

The AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks program is being sponsored by a grant awarded by the New York State Office of National and Community Service.

Elaine Leavitt chairs the North Country Workforce Investment Board’s Youth Council. She said her organization is teaming up

with United Way to facilitate the new AmeriCorps program.

“It is wonderful to see AmeriCorps be returned to the region,” she said in a release issued in late June. “The values and experiences that our youth will receive from this program are invaluable.”

The Adirondack AmeriCorps program will enlist up to 14 people to serve with service organiza-

tions in Franklin, Essex and Clinton counties. Leavitt says the program’s goal is to “create, support, or enhance” service efforts that spread awareness about things like literacy, health care availability and preventative services, and economic development.

ISLE LAMOTTE, Vt. — Members of Knights of Columbus councils from throughout Northern New York will conduct their 63rd annual pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine Sunday, July 17.

Knights of Columbus State Deputy Salvatore Restivo will welcome the Most Rev. Terry A. LaValley, Bishop of Ogdensburg, who will say the 12:15 p.m. Mass and join the Knights and their families for a picnic lunch.

The Knights will participate in the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3 p.m.

Dannemora Council 2166 originated the pilgrimage as a council program in 1949. Interest in the day of prayer and fellowship gradually spread to neighboring councils.

By 1959, the pilgrimage was being sponsored by the New York State Council. During the pilgrimage’s early years, Knights from several communities formed a caravan

of cars that crossed the bridge to Vermont in a line that stretched for miles. People were attracted by a devotion to St. Anne, by the Masses and wonderful music and by the Shrine’s beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Champlain. Dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of Mary, the Shrine’s religious history dates to 1666 when the French erected a fort and chapel on the site. The chapel was blessed in 1893 and the statue of St. Anne was erected. Later in 1893 nearly 2,000 people attended the Shrine’s first organized pilgrimage with several people traveling to the pilgrimage by steamboat.

Today, several people still travel to the Shrine by boat and visitors can enjoy a lunch on the grounds or eat in the Shrine’s modern cafeteria.

Concert to celebrate theatre restoration CHATEAUGAY — “Ladies of the Canyon” are set to perform in the newlyrenovated Chateaugay Town Hall Theatre next Saturday, July 23. This will be their first concert stateside.

McManus commended the chamber for promoting the area but said he remained on the fence over the matter. If the county legislature did want to move forward with raising the tax, the body would have to petition the state legislature to do so.

“We would have to petition the Senate and the Assembly to pass legislation that would allow us to collect [the additional tax],” he said.

“I’m just not sure it’s the time,” he reiterated.

McManus said with likely three, if not four new faces joining the county legislature after this November ’s elections, raising the bed tax is an issue he feels may be better suited to be acted up by those taking office next year.

“This is an issue I think we may want to defer for the new board when it sits in January,” said McManus.

The shuttle will run every hour. The first shuttle begins at 12pm and the last shuttle leaves at 5pm.

Wells keeps digging, hits Airborne paydirt SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — Mike Wells of West Chazy had hundreds of underdog rooters on their feet as he retook the lead from Martin Roy July 9 at Airborne Speedway.

Wells took the lead with five laps left in the 30-lap DIRTcar Modified feature and drove off to his first career win. Wells started on the pole in the G&G Auto Parts No. 76 and stayed in the lead through four restarts in the first 12 laps before Roy took over on lap 13. The former track champion quickly built a five car-length advantage before a fifth restart tightened the field after 20 laps were completed.

Suddenly on lap 22, Wells, working the bottom groove with Pat McGrail and Andy Heywood in tow, reached Roy’s door. On lap 25, he regained the lead entering turn three as Roy faded and finally pitted for a new right rear tire.

“When the No. 90 passed me, I thought, ‘Now, I’m racing for second and more of the big guys are coming,’” said Wells. “Then, I was able to get back to him. I didn’t overdrive when I got to his rear wheel. When I jumped on my horse, she responded. ” McGrail stayed close for second.

Heywood held off Aaron Bartemy and Patrick Dupree to finish third.

Dupree pressured Bartemy for the final 15 laps, but couldn’t advance.

Positions 6-10 went to Vince Quenneville, Kris Vernold, Max Viens,

Martin Hebert and Don Scarborough.

Wells had shown promise earlier when he won his heat and earned a spot in the Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified six-lap “Dash for Cash. ” Roy won the dash and said, “maybe tonight it’s my turn,” but Wells had other ideas.

“I’m so excited,” Wells said after a rooftop dance in victory lane. “In West Chazy, the beer ’s on me. ” Wells moved up from the Sportsman division in 2009.

Bucko Branham, driving the Liquor and Wine Warehouse No. 20, won the J&S Steel Sportsman feature with relative ease after taking the lead on lap 8. Danny Sullivan and Jamy Begor finished 2nd and 3rd.

Branham won his heat race as did Travis Bruno.

Two cautions and a red flag for Gordy Stone, who rolled onto a tire pile at the edge of the jersey barriers on the backstretch, ushered Branham toward the front. When the inside lane opened up in turns three and four n lap six, he drove into second place and challenged the leader Brandon Atkins. On the way to his top finish of the season, Atkins was dicing for second with Sullivan down the back chute and spun when the pair rubbed quarter-panels.

“Sometimes getting pinned on the bottom has been my downfall this year,” Branham said. “I made the bottom work today. ”

The NAPA Mini Modifieds had two features. Point leader CJ Lavair of Gabrels won the opener after contact on the backstretch with leader Kris Clark, who held on for second with Erick Sayles third. Clark finished second in round two as well, trailing only winner Jamie LaFountain of Keeseville.

Kevin Boutin won the Renegade feature comfortably ahead of Robbie Favreau and Lance Rabtoy. Josh Durivage scored his fifth win in the Bomber feature. Bill Joyal Sr. and Tyler Bresette were next.

Sports Briefs Camp scheduled for volleyball BEEKMANTOWN — Beekmantown Booster Club Volleyball Academy will host its summer volleyball camp next week.

ELLENBURG — The Cats and Dogs Volleyball Camp is still seeking participants for its summer season.

Soccer camp taking registration ROUSES POINT — Friends of North Country will host a three-week preseason soccer camp beginning Monday, July 25.

The camp will be for those who will be playing modified or JV soccer this fall. The format will include a workout, skill sessions, 6 vs. 6 games and cool down. The camp will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. four to five nights per week through Sunday, Aug. 14, and be split between the Rouses Point Civic Center and Mooers.

Invasive species alert!

ast weekend, I traveled to Elizabethtown, to fish along the Boquet River and its tributaries. Although I caught both bass, and yellow perch along the lower sections of the river, neither of these species was of great concern.

The Boquet River connects the High Peaks to the west, with the Champlain Valley to the east, as it follows a route through the Pleasant Valley.

However, in the near future, the Pleasant Valley may no longer be so pleasant.

The potential threats may arrive on the felt soles of an angler ’s waders, or be attached to the bottom of a boat. They may be delivered in the hubcap of a passing car, or be inadvertently introduced by a visitor, hauling wood from home for a campfire.

It is no longer a matter of when, where or how the next invasive species will appear in our neck of the woods. The fact is, they are already here, and, it will happen again.

The next threat may come from a plant, an insect, animal, fish or some other aquatic creature. Despite the source or type of introduction, we must all be prepared.

Invasive species are all inclusive invaders. They affect everyone, from berry pickers to deer hunters,

anglers to birders, and beyond.

Their effects are far reaching.

Although Eurasian milfoil may appear to be a problem only for boaters and swimmers; there are many other dangerous, invasive plants that we will all have to deal with. Poisonous plants such as poison ivy, may be replaced by species such as wild parsnip or giant hogweed, (a truly, dangerous species recently confirmed in Essex!)

Already, huge stands of Japanese knotweed have replaced the vast plots of ferns, along the local riverbanks. Didymo, aka rock snot, may prove to be a much greater problem than milfoil, especially along the Boquet, the Ausable and the Schroon.

These plants, and many other invasive species, have the potential to radically transform our old, familiar surroundings into a dangerous, and truly inhospitable landscape.

Familiar species, such as Canada Geese have already had a negative impact in Saranac Lake, where efforts have been made to reclaim the village waterfront park, and the school’s athletic fields.

Although many have joked about

the situation; I wonder if they would laugh at a similar invasion of feral swine. Feral hogs have already taken over in parts of the Southern Tier.

Invasive species are harmful not just to the environment. They are harmful to all forms of outdoor recreation, and to human health.

Invasive specie pose the greatest threat to our traditional way of life, and to the regional economy!

Whether it is curly leaf pondweed or purple loosestrife, a stand of phragmites or a single, emerald ash borer; there are literally hundreds of environmental threats looming on the near horizon.

What can be done about it?

Awareness is surely the most important first step. There must be greater vigilance, with more trained eyes and ears on the lookout for the invaders. It must happen on the roadsides, in the woods and on the waters. Early detection of invasive infestations is key!

Invasive species are like an unruly puppy, and catching them before they get loose is really the best chance to prevent a problem.

The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program is a partner of the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. They have already trained over a hundred local residents in the detection of aquatic invaders, however more help is needed.

They are the folks that are in the woods, and on the waters, all year round. The sporting community is also intimately familiar with their surroundings, as they often visit the same locations more frequently.

In the Adirondacks, there has always been a redneck fringe ready to do battle with the ‘greenies’. However, there has never been a more pressing need for these two groups to put aside their grievances, for the betterment of all.

Hunters, archers to help kids with life-threatening illnesses 3D Archery Shoot set this weekend to help ‘Hunt of A Lifetime’

CHESTERFIELD — The granting of a wish for a sick child is something Melissa Alban of Cadyville would do anything make happen — especially when that wish involves enjoying the great outdoors.

Alban, a member of the Siberian

Rod and Gun Club in Dannemora, is joining her fellow club members and members of the West Chazy Archers and Chesterfield’s Adirondack Archers clubs to raise money for Hunt of A Lifetime, a nonprofit organization based in Harborcreek, Pa., that provides hunting and fishing opportunities for those 21 and younger who have been diagnosed with terminal or life-threatening illnesses.

“We’re all very big into hunting and on the different websites we use, we’ve always seen something about Hunt of A Lifetime,” said Alban, who said she and her peers de-

cided to look more into the organization. “We found out they help kids whose last wish is to go hunting and fishing and we figured how could we not help with that?”

The three clubs have joined together to host a 3D Archery Shoot at the Chesterfield Fish and Game Club, 359 Green St., which will encourage hunters and target-shooters to try their hand at hitting targets. The two-day event will begin with registration at 7 a.m. this Saturday, July 16, with the shoot to continue throughout the day. The event will pick back up at 7 a.m.

Sunday, July 17, and continue

through 12 p.m. Awards will be handed out after.

It’s Alban’s hope the event will not only raise money for Hunt of A Lifetime, but awareness that the organization even exists.

“I honestly don’t think too many people know about [Hunt of A Lifetime],” said Alban. “There are so many families around here who are into hunting that probably don’t even know this is out there for them if they need it. And, if there’s a local child that can get a wish granted from this, that would be great.”

clude a spaghetti dinner, novelty shoot, night team shoot, and several items to be raffled away, including a gun.

The cost to register for the event is $15 for adults and $10 for children, which includes the cost of the spaghetti dinner. Those who wish to only purchase the dinner may pay $7. Meals will be served starting at 2 p.m.
