Playing in the mud

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SCHUYLER FALLS — “It started with three trucks and look at where we are now,” said Joshua Dashnaw, as he looked out at more than a dozen trucks.

What began as “a couple of buddies getting together to play in the mud,” has grown to something greater — a group called the Mid-Day Mudders. The group started getting together in March with a want to “go mudding” with their trucks, ranging from stock vehicles to suped-up and lifted-up monster trucks. They just needed a place to go.

“And, you can’t go on posted property. You’d get arrested,” laughed Dashnaw.

That’s where Dashnaw’s father, Jeff, came in.

“He’d been after me to help him with a piece of land to do this, so I let them use some property I have back behind the barn,” said Dashnaw’s father. “I figured these kids today could be out doing other things so I’m glad they’re doing this.”

The area where the group runs their trucks was originally a cornfield and had recently become overgrown with grass, said Dashnaw. It took a lot of hard work to prepare the land for mudding, he said, but it was fun trying it out in the meantime.

“We were cleaning more grass out of our trucks than we were mud,” said Dashnaw, with a big grin. “Now it’s all mud.”

Hundreds of hours of clearing the land, hauling in thousands of gallons of water and digging a trench with the help of Ormsby Trucking in Morrisonville made it happen.

“We put about 20,000 to 25,000 gallons of water in that trench the first week. We hauled some serious water,” said Dashnaw. “It’s a lot of work behind the scenes.”

And, the work doesn’t stop. Even though the land was primed for perfect mudding conditions, it still takes thousands of gallons of water each week to keep the site ready to use. The club, which consists of a core group of 15-20 volunteers, works hard on the land on an almost daily basis. Most recently, the Mid-Day Mudders got together for a Fourth of July barbecue and mudding exhibition. It wasn’t an easy task, said club member Bill Lawson of Plattsburgh.

“It was a lot of work. We’ve been busting our humps just to get ready for this,” Lawson said at the Fourth of July event as he looked at the grounds. “This is amazing. It just takes teamwork and that’s what the club is all about.”

The club is much like a family, said Lawson, and that’s a family both he and Dashnaw said they’d like to see grow.

going out and having fun,” said Lawson. “The club is a family and we’re trying to make it bigger and bigger every week.”

“Basically, this year, we’re just getting the bugs worked out of it,” said Dashnaw. “Then, we’ll go hardcore next year.”

Eventually, Dashnaw said he’d like to see the Mid-Day Mudders host exhibitions as big as ones they go to in Bradford, Vt. Drawing in people from Saranac Lake, Malone, Elizabethtown, and even as far away as Maine, the club is well on its way, he said.

“We’ve got potential to do something like that here if the town lets us,” said Dashnaw. “We’ve just got to get more members and we need more

Why would people want to join? Because playing in the mud is good, clean fun, said Dashnaw.

“It’s an adrenaline rush. When you’ve got your foot to the floor, it’s nuts,” he said.

The public is invited to Dashnaw Farms, located near the intersection of State Route 22B and Turner Road, every other Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. The next mudding exhibition will be July 18.

“It’s fun. It’s definitely something to look forward to on Sunday afternoons,” said Dashnaw.

Remembering Nichelle Dousharm Benefit this Saturday to help family of 11-year-old lost unexpectedly

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — When Danyell Dousharm thinks about her daughter, Nichelle, she remembers her as “an upbeat child” who was “always enjoying life.”

“She was my tomboy. It was very seldom I could get her in a dress,” recalled Dousharm.

She and her husband, Bryan, suffered a devastating loss when Nichelle unexpectedly passed away April 24. It was earlier that week when Nichelle developed a high-grade fever, which her mother treated at home with Tylenol and a cool bath. After a few days, the fever wasn’t letting up, said Dousharm, leading her to bring Nichelle to the hospital.

However, tests were inconclusive. Nichelle’s stomach was enlarged but conditions such as urinary tract and kidney infections were ruled out, said Dousharm.

“We couldn’t figure out what was causing the fever,” said Dousharm.

Nichelle was put on medication that was believed would correct the problem, said her mother, but the Dousharms soon found themselves back in the hospital a day later.

“Her stomach was even bigger than before,” said Dousharm.

Ultimately, Nichelle was sent to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., where she was put through a battery of tests and X-rays.

“We went from her being okay, to being admitted into the hospital to having to go to Vermont,” said Dousharm.

Nichelle’s parents met with her following a

colonoscopy she had to undergo, and, initially, Nichelle seemed fine, said her mother.

“We asked her if she was okay and she just said she was cold. The next thing we know, we were getting shipped out of the room because she crashed,” said Dousharm.

The exact cause of Nichelle’s death is still a mystery to the Dousharms at this point, as they await results of a full autopsy. It hasn’t been easy for the family, living with the uncertainty. Yet, they manage.

“We’ve been taking it one day at a time, remembering all the happy times we had with her,” said Dousharm.

When Amanda Desotell heard about Nichelle’s death, she wanted to help. As a member of the Rand Hill Ridge Runners Motorcycle Club, she was looking for a local cause for the club to support, and said she was compelled to offer whatever help the club could give.

“We just wanted to do something,” said Desotell, who reached out to Nichelle’s parents.

The Dousharms were receptive to the idea of hosting an event in Nichelle’s memory, making sure it was more of a celebration of her life rather than a mourning of her death. With that, the Family Fun Day and Bike Run in Memory of Nichelle Dousharm was born.

The event, scheduled for this Saturday, July 10, will consist of a motorcycle ride starting at Glenwood Plaza on State Route 22 and a carnival at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 309 on State Route 22B. The 75-mile ride, which will end at the VFW post, will begin with registration at 10 a.m. and the ride to follow at 11 a.m. The Family Fun Day portion, which will include face painting, a dunk-

“I never knew Nichelle at all, but from what I’ve gotten to know about her by handing out donation flyers and talking to people at the school, she had to have been the sweetest little thing on the face of this earth,” said Desotell. “We’re hoping we have a big turnout.”

“We wanted to make sure this was something she would enjoy and they would enjoy,” said Desotell. “It’s pretty much going to be something where you can bring your kids and have fun.”

The new WiGig standard Caregiving and grieving

W

ireless networking is very convenient for the computer industry. It doesn’t matter whether the network is moving business information or streaming entertainment data; what does matter is networking is still possible even though running wires is not convenient, practical or even possible. For a long time there has been Wi-Fi, the trade name for devices operating within the wireless IEEE 802.11 standard. Now there’s WiGig, the name representing a new alliance hoping to soon bring blazing-fast wireless speeds to a network near you.

We first looked at Wi-Fi last September when the IEEE quietly formalized the 802.11n standard. That action brought the wireless networking standard up to a decent level. Not great, but decent enough to keep the standard moving forward. Wi-Fi operates on a frequency of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or both which are two unlicensed frequencies that have upsides and downsides. On the upside, the frequencies travel a fair distance while passing through obstacles like walls and floors. On the downside, the frequency spectrum is somewhat narrow and very crowded with competition from other de-

vices, like cordless phones.

That limits the throughput of data and therefore the usefulness of the network.

With WiGig, a major shift takes place in wireless networking by tapping into the 57 GHz to 64 GHz frequency range. The use of the higher frequency range provides two real benefits.

The range of WiGig will be very limited which is good because it limits interferBy Ron Poland ence from other WiGig devices. The large frequency window will allow for data throughput rates as high as ten times the current Wi-Fi standard.

WiGig is not intended to replace Wi-Fi, it will compliment it. By combing the long range aspect of Wi-Fi with the high throughput of WiGig, users will have the throughput previously available only to wired networks.

ffering consolation to someone who has lost their spouse is always difficult, but what if the grieving individual is the caregiver’s parent?

The caregiver must try to balance their own feelings with their need to comfort the surviving partner. Caregivers must remember everyone grieves differently, and how the caregiver approaches the grieving process may be vastly different from the way the widow or widower grieves.

Here are some basic tips to help both caregivers and surviving partners through this difficult time: • Practice patience and understanding, from a long-term perspective. Grief will eventually decrease, but it may take months.

• After seeing a loved one suffer through an illness or a debilitating condition, the surviving spouse may not begin to grieve immediately.

There may even be an initial sense of relief. However, the grief may appear suddenly, even after several weeks.

• Grief can create considerable stress, resulting in a depleted immune system. Interrupted or insufficient sleep may also become a concern. Make sure the widow’s or widower ’s physician is

aware of their loss.

• Grief can present a variety of emotions, with no rhyme or reason. It is not unusual for grieving persons to feel anger, resentment, relief, regret, and of course, sadness. Be prepared to expect any of these emotions, and don’t judge the surviving partner for their current emotional state.

• Even after the grieving seems to have abated, the surviving spouse may still exhibit some grief-related behaviors, like being forgetful, distracted, confused, or disinterested in normal activities. Don’t be afraid to talk about these things, and be a good listener.

• Make sure the surviving spouse is eating adequately. Encourage them to eat, and suggest exercise, with their physician’s approval.

• Encourage participation in a support group for grieving spouses.

Concerns over mushrooms

ecently, my daughter gave me a scare when she walked up to me in the yard, a mushroom in hand with a clean bite taken out of it, and asked, “Can you eat this?” A rushed phone call to poison control followed, which was followed by a long 24 hours of watching for any poisoning symptoms. Luckily, the mushroom was either nonpoisonous or Elsa did not swallow the bite she took. Of course, the incident was followed by quite a bit of research on lawn mushrooms.

As a general rule of thumb, mushrooms are not harmful to the lawn. Surprisingly, most lawn mushrooms are beneficial. The hyphae, or underground portion of the fungus, feeds off decaying organic matter, such as tree roots, leaves, or pieces of wood. Nitrogen is released during the fungi’s feeding process, which in turn feeds the lawn. This is why your lawn may look dark green in areas where you observed mushrooms a short while ago.

Most of the mushrooms found in our lawns are stinkhorns, puff balls, birds nests, lawn mower ’s mushroom, and ink caps. Fortunately, the majority of mushrooms found in the lawn are not poisonous. Some can cause gastric upset, and a few are toxic. Because some are toxic, parents of young children and pet owners worry about mushrooms in their

lawn.

Mushrooms are hard to remove from the lawn. There are no known chemicals that can be used to get rid of lawn fungi. Mowing over the mushrooms only temporarily removes the fruiting structure, which will reappear when the weather conditions are right.

The only true way to remove a lawn fungus is to remove the organic material the fungus is feeding on. This process involves digging down into the soil to find the material and completely removing it.

For most people, this task is too time consuming and difficult. A simple solution is to hand pick and dispose of mushrooms as you see them. This will not remove the mushrooms permanently, but will temporarily solve the problem without spreading the spores (the fungi’s equivalent of seeds). The more important step, which we are working on at our house, is to teach young children to never pick or eat mushrooms. As we have learned, this step takes frequent reminders — never, ever eat a mushroom from outside!

Heading uphill

The Tour de Rand Hill 14-mile bike race will be held Saturday, July 17, beginning at 9 a.m., with proceeds benefitting the YMCA’s scholarships to Camp Jericho.

When the race began in 2005, there were only 10 participants, all men. Now, six years later, the number of participants has continued to increase, with women also taking part.

“You’re seeing faster times and more competitors because road biking has just really taken off,” explained race organizer Patti Warner.

The bike race begins at the YMCA on Oak Street, continues down State Route 374, then turns and heads up Rand Hill Road, ending near Camp Jericho in Altona.

“We have such wonderful sup-

port from the mayor, city police, state police, sheriff ’s department, volunteers and the staff here and our sponsors,” said Warner.

Despite the rather difficult uphill ride, Warner has also noticed record times being recorded every year.

Last year ’s winner for the men was Bruce Beauharnois, with a time of 39:58.

“I had all I could do to get up there with my car [in that time],” laughed Warner.

However, not everyone participates in the race with the goal of winning. There is also a Fun Division for which people can sign up.

“We’ve always had a Fun Division so that people do not have to race it,” said Warner. “They can ride casually, enjoy the scenery, socialize.”

Nolland took up bike riding as a way to stay in shape for spin class and said he “just became committed to it.”

“It’s a challenge,” he said. “Now it’s become a personal [goal] every year to do it and try to beat my

“For a lot of people to say that, ‘I went and rode up Rand Hill,’ is a big deal,” added Nolland.

Having been at the finish line every year to watch the bikers finish, Warner has found it doesn’t matter what place you finish.

“When the last people come in, the first people are just as happy

for them,” she said. “It’s very good camaraderie.”

Registration is currently taking place for the Tour de Rand Hill.

The cost is $20 for YMCA members and $25 for non-members.

Last cast for a cherished outdoor writer

T

he woods were a bit stiller, the waters a bit calmer and the wildlife just a bit quieter across the North Country this past weekend, as news spread that the Press Republican’s longtime, outdoor writer, Dennis Aprill, had died unexpectedly Saturday, July 3 from a form of pancreatic cancer.

Anglers and guides, paddlers and hikers, birders, hunters and fellow outdoor writers were saddened with the news. Aprill first began his popular, award winning "Outdoor Perspective" column in the Sunday issue of the Press Republican Sept. 9, 1990. He continued to regularly produce a full page of outdoor news for the Sunday issue, for more than 20 years, without missing a single week.

His columns offered a little bit of something for all audiences. Whether it was big game hunting, bird watching, wild flowers or flyfishing, Aprill managed to collect something to entertain and enlighten his readers every Sunday for more than 1,000 weeks in a row. He never missed a beat.

It is a feat that is difficult to fathom, especially considering the fact that most of the outdoor writers I know are incredible procrastinators. Most writers prefer to be in the field or on the water, rather than sitting

around writing about the same.

However, Aprill, with seeming ease and recognized excellence, managed to do both. At the same time, he also worked full-time as a professor of journalism at Plattsburgh State and managed to raise a fine family.

Always an excellent source of information about the outdoors, Aprill worked hard to bring together many of the region’s finest fishing authorities to author chapters of his book, Good Fishing in the Adirondacks. He updated and released a second edition of the book this past spring. He had also authored several hiking guidebooks including Paths Less Traveled, Short Treks in the Adirondacks and Beyond and had co-authored a field guide, Mammals of the Adirondacks.

Although Aprill’s "Outdoor Perspective" column in the Sunday, Press Republican was read far and wide, he also contributed regularly to numerous national and regional magazines including Vermont Outdoors, Adirondack Life, Sports Afield and the NYS Conservationist.

As a writer, Aprill's work was highly regarded and he regularly earned awards from the NYS Outdoor Writers Association, the New England Outdoor Writers Association

and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He was honored as well by the state Department of Environmental Conservation Earth Day Media Partnership, and in 1999, the Woodmen of the World named him their Conservationist of the Year.

In 2009, Aprill was inducted into the NYS Outdoorsman Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of such local notables as Bob Brown of Saranac Lake, the late Nellie Staves of Tupper Lake, Dennis Bill Wellman of Plattsburgh and the late, Francis Betters of Wilmington, who also was a regular contributor to Aprill’s outdoor page.

In recent months, Aprill’s page also featured stories written by a number of fine writers including Elizabeth Lee of Westport and Dan Ladd from Fort Ann. Aprill also continued to feature regular weekly columns written by the late, great Francis Betters. Betters’ writings, about flyfishing the Ausable River, are as timely today as when he first wrote them. The fly hatches he studied and the fly patterns he created are still “spot on accurate.”

Aprill presented outdoor news in a manner that allowed it to be easily digested by all users. He also provided a role model for families by regularly involving his children in his outdoor adventures. He was both a sportsman’s advocate and an environmen-

talist, a feat accomplished by walking a line that is far more difficult to travel when walking and talking within the Blueline.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Colin and daughter, Karalyn. Services for Dennis Aprill will be held on Thursday, July 8 at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Reflecting on a half-century at CVPH

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first patient admitted to the Champlain Valley Hospital. Much has changed in the hospital’s history over the course of a century, and Fay Ashline can attest to that.

Ashline, director of the radiology school at the hospital, has been an employee there for 50 years.

“It’s gone by very quickly,” she said. “You don’t even realize how fast time goes when you’re busy. I’ve always been busy and I’ve always liked what I do. The time just flies. It doesn’t seem like 50 years.”

When Ashline first came to the hospital in 1960, it was actually Physicians Hospital, with Champlain Valley Hospital located at what is now part of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh campus.

However, in 1967, the two hospitals merged, first on paper, then physically in 1972.

“During that time I spent two three-month periods over at Champlain Valley, just getting to know the people,” recalled Ashline. “It was just a learning curve to get two departments together.”

From then on, more and more changes could be seen throughout the hospital.

“All of the mahogany wood, all of that disappeared,” she

said. “Everything was painted and changed.”

“I think the biggest change came with the cancer center,” Ashline added. “The open heart program is huge. For Plattsburgh that was a huge project and it certainly is paying off.”

In terms of the radiology department, where Ashline has been the director for nearly 40 years — and only the second one in its history — she’s seen many changes as well.

“We have just grown from one room to a huge department,” she said. “Adding CT and MRI and mammography. It just never stopped. It started to grow and it just continued.”

Other memories Ashline carries with her are from back when she actually lived in the hospital in the nurses residence.

“We had a house mother on the first floor and the doors were locked at 8 and 9 o’clock at night,” she recalled. “There was a lot of fun at the nurses residence.”

Some of the “fun” Ashline referred to included sneaking out and getting a drink at Meron’s down the road and sunbathing on the rooftop of the hospital.

“The pilots would go over from the airbase and they would call the central phone at the dorm at the nurses residence and ask who was out sunbathing,” Ashline laughed. “They would ask if anyone was interested in going out that night.”

“It was a different time,” she added.

With 50 years under her belt, Ashline admits she’s deeply considered retirement and will decide after the first of the year what she plans to do.

o no, I’m not going to tell you that you can get the body of your dreams by working out for six minutes a day, three days a week. However I am going to tell you to try to do the following “Six-Minute Circuit” I created as many times as you can in 20 minutes. This workout requires no equipment besides a stop-watch and can be done at home or outside.

Directions: • Warm up for 5 minutes.

• Perform the following exercises in the sequence listed.

• Rest at the end of the circuit for 1-2 minutes if needed. Grab a drink of water and continue.

• Repeat as many times as you can in 20 minutes — NO LONGER! Even if you do not have enough time to complete another circuit start it and finish at 20 minutes.

• Take note how far you get, the next time you do this workout, try to get further.

• Stretch when you are done • Have fun!

• Jump and Stick — Start standing with knees bent, feet about hips width apart, jump up, land on one foot, balance, alternate feet.

• Bodyweight Squat • Push Up • Leg Lever — Lay on the ground with feet in the air, lift your hips off the ground and try to reach the ceiling/sky with your heels.

• Stationary Lunge (30 sec. on each leg) • Jumping Jacks • Spiderman Push Ups — Standard push up or modified on your knees, lower chest to ground and bring left knee to left elbow. Return to pushup position and alternate sides.

• Overhead Toe Touches — Laying on back with feet in the air and arms extended over you head. Lift your shoulders off the ground with you hands reaching up towards your feet.

• High Knees – Running in place but bring your knees up high in front of you.

• Isometric Squat – hold a squat • Plank — Come up on your forearms and toes, you want your body to be flat like a board. Hold for allotted time.

“I was doing four or five [workshops] a year, but I’m now leaving it at just two or three,” she said. “I thought I’d try some at home to see how they felt.”

The open studio next week will be a way to do just that, and to also celebrate the release of her new book on CD, “Make Dynamic Paintings in Watercolor.”

“It’s been awhile since I wrote the first book, which was in hardcover,” said Pember. “I just felt like maybe approaching it in a different way would be useful for people.”

The new CD and workshops are ways Pember looks to share her years of painting experience with others, she said. Long before her works were selected for more than 165 national juried exhibitions and won more than 40 awards, Pember was once a budding artist herself, she said. That’s why she wants to share words of advice to help people get started on the right artistic path.

“One of the things I suggest is they don’t overwhelm themselves with too many materials,” said Pember. “Particularly, paint. There are so many kinds of paint out there, and the various companies will take the same pigment and give it different names, which can be confusing.”

ers will actually let you take paint off, which is unusual in watercolor,” said Pember. “And, with brushes, you don’t need to have super expensive brushes, but you do need to pay attention to whether or not they’ll make a good mark.”

“Do they have a nice point, or if they’re flat, do they have a good edge,” Pember said are some of the questions budding artists need to ask.

The July 18 open studio will be held at 14 Water Edge Road from 1-4 p.m. Watercolor classes will be offered beginning that week, starting with two half-day classes Wednesday, July 21, and Saturday, July 28. Weekend classes will be held Saturday, July 24, through Sunday, July 25, and Saturday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 1.

A critiquing session will be offered Saturday, Aug. 14.

Village looking to get more use out of gazebo

That was the philosophy behind building the gazebo at the corner of Cook and Flagg streets in 2001, and it’s one the village board of trustees is still trying to make happen, said trustee Kathleen E. Kiroy.

“In the past, the library has used it for children’s reading programs,” said Kiroy. “And, for the last two years we’ve been offering it to people to use as a place for a farmers market. But, we’ve never got any takers.”

The village board has put forth another effort this year to market a market, but hasn’t found any takers, said a disappointed Kiroy.

“It would give people in the village a place to go and get local produce and so forth,” she said, adding a market downtown would especially benefit senior citizens. “It’d be a benefit to the people of the community to have something like that available to them.”

When it comes to scheduling, Kiroy

said the village would even be willing to work with potential vendors.

“We would work with them with whatever they wanted to do,” said Kiroy. “It could be during the week even. All they’d have to do is contact us.”

In the meantime, what the gazebo has thrived upon is small gatherings, including the village’s weekly summer concert series. Since 2004, the village has hosted musical performances on the lawn, with many people setting up their folding chairs in and around the gazebo.

“It took a couple years to get the concert series going, but once we did, people from all areas started coming to it,” said Kiroy. “They really enjoy it.”

On July 2, the village hosted The Moving On Band and, July 9, The Back Porch Band. The next scheduled performance at the gazebo will be Friday, July 16, featuring Too Big for the Corner. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m.

Those interested in using the gazebo may contact the village office at 492-7000, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Moving On Band performed for the crowd recently at the village gazebo on the corner of Cook and Flagg streets.

The village board of trustees has been looking to increase use of the gazebo, particularly inviting farmers market vendors to set up there regularly.

Chazy Lake Beach Days return

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com DANNEMORA — There’s a lot of things going on this summer at Chazy Lake Beach, and Angela Spahr wants families to take advantage of them.

Spahr, who serves as activities coordinator for the Town of Dannemora Youth Commission, is excited about the return of Chazy Lake Beach Days, for one. The annual event brings weekly activities to the beach throughout July and August inviting kids to “just have fun.”

“I’ve already had people coming to my door asking me when it was starting,” Spahr said in an interview last week.

The recreation program started with a barbecue July 6, and will continue Tuesdays for the next seven weeks. Each week, structured activities will be offered from 1-4 p.m., with themes such as “Survival Games,” “World of Color,” and “Science Day,” a particular favorite among kids.

“That one was a big hit,” said Spahr.

This year, Spahr is adding a little something extra into the mix. Prior to the start of structured activities, she invites families to stop by the beach from 12-1 p.m. with a book and a picnic lunch.

“We’re going to have a reading time where

we’ll encourage them to bring their own book,” said Spahr. “But, we’re also going to have books available, too.”

Reading is just one way the youth commission is looking to boost interest in Chazy Lake Beach Days, said Spahr. Bins of activities and sporting equipment will also be made available for families to sign out during the program.

“We just want to get people to come to the beach and for them to have some other activities to do when they’re there,” said Spahr.

“It’s such a beautiful property. We just want it used more.”

The activities offered at Chazy Lake Beach Days are at no cost, according to Spahr. The program is geared toward all children of the town of Dannemora, including the village of Dannemora, and the communities of Chazy Lake, Upper Chateaugay Lake, Standish and Lyon Mountain. However, all children will be allowed to participate regardless of where they reside.

“I’ve never turned a kid away,” said Spahr.

In the weeks to come, the youth commission will host “Character Day,” July 13; “World of Color,” July 20; “Survival Games and Team Building,” July 27, “Playground Games,” sponsored by the Clinton County Youth Bureau, Aug. 3; “Crime Scene Day,” Aug. 10; “Science Day,” Aug. 17; and the “End-of-the-

Summer Beach Party,” Aug. 24.

Children younger than 5 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while attending the program and participants must bring their own snacks and drinks. Participants are also encouraged to bring a swimsuit, towel and sunblock.

“Just normal stuff for a beach,” said Spahr, who added flip-flops are allowed, however, a change of shoes is recommended.

Each child that comes to Chazy Lake Beach Days will be given a tote bag they may decorate and use to carry their beach gear to and from the beach each week.

Class to teach livestock owners about protection from parasites July 17 CANTON — Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County will offer a class in small ruminant integrated parasite management Saturday, July 17, at the CCE Learning Farm, 2043 State Route 68.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a lecture, lab and on-farm components. Commercial livestock and pet sheep, goat, alpaca or llama owners will be able to learn how to cost-effectively and efficiently protect their animals from internal parasites.

Class pre-registration is required, however, the $35 fee per farm for materials, lab supplies and lunch can be paid the day of class. Additional attendees from the same farm will be charged $5 for lunch.

IntheMilitary Divoll completes nuclear training course

BALLSTON SPA — Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Alexander E. Divoll recently completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course with the Nuclear Power Training Unit.

Divoll received instruction about nuclear theory, chemistry, physics, reactor operations, safety and security. Upon completion of the course, Divoll was designated a nuclear power operator.

Divoll, a 2006 graduate of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School of Fitchburg, Mass., joined the Navy in June 2008. He is son of Sandra and Francis Divoll, Peru.

From page 1 And, even though her mother wasn’t sold on the idea, Freeman likes to think she’d be happy with what she and her fellow riding enthusiasts do each year with the Ride to Remember. The annual motorcycle ride — which raises money for the Northeastern New York Alzheimer ’s Disease Assistance Center — is held in honor of Tobin, who suffered from the degenerative condition until her death in 2005. This year marks the fifth ride in her memory.

“Every year I get a little frazzled about this time,” said Freeman. “It’s so much work, but the day of the event is the reward. It’s worth it seeing how many people support it.”

And, support it they do. Hundreds of people show up each year for the event and local businesses step up to the plate time and again with donations for raffles and auctions.

“We got tons of support this year from local businesses. They’ve just been great,” said Freeman.

Kneucraft Fine Jewelry was among the top sponsors for the event, donating $500 worth of merchandise to be given away. It’s support like that, said Freeman, that shows people understand the importance of fighting Alzheimer ’s.

“There are so many benefits going on this time of year, so it’s nice to see they still find this is an important event,” she said. “Just about everyone you know, knows someone with Alzheimer ’s or some form of dementia.”

July 10, 2010 That thought was the inspiration for redesigning the Ride to Remember logo this year, adding the words “Someone you know needs a cure.” This year, the ride will also offer stickers for riders to wear that read, “I ride for _____,” allowing people to fill in the blank with a loved one’s name, said Freeman.

“I think my mom would be very happy that our family pulled together to do this,” Freeman said of Ride to Remember. “She would be glad we are taking what turned our family upside-down and turning it around to help other families cope with it.”

The 5th annual Ride to Remember will be held at American Legion Post 1619, 219 Rand Hill Road, West Plattsburgh, this Saturday, July 10. The event will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., with the ride to follow at 10:30 a.m.

Following the ride, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the post will host a barbecue, auction and 50/50 drawings. Performances by Angry Neighbors, Bootleg and The Jay Walkin Band will round out the afternoon.

The cost to register for the motorcycle ride is $15 per rider or $25 for a rider and passenger, which includes the price of the barbecue.

Those wishing to only enjoy the barbecue will be charged $10 each. The event will be held rain or shine.

Those interested in registering for the ride or in obtaining more information, may contact Freeman at 293-6496. Registration forms are also available at Lake City Choppers, 594 State Route 3; Caron’s Cycles, 40 S. Junction Road; and American Legion Post 1619. Donations for the event are also still being accepted.

It’s a family thing

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Of the eight people from the Adirondack Region heading to Buffalo for shooting at the Empire State Games, three of them are members of the Visconti family.

Family patriarch Peter Visconti, who began shooting rifles in 10th grade, said he continued to do so through college, eventually stopping a couple years after that.

“I picked it up again about two years ago,” he said. “Two years ago, I shot in the Empire State Games and we got a bronze medal. Our team came in third and I came in fourth, individually.”

Then, shortly thereafter, his son Andrew, now 12, took up the sport.

“I just assumed that Andrew was going to want to shoot and he seemed like he had the interest, so we just started shooting,” said Peter.

After seeing girls taking part at a state shooting festival last year, Peter ’s daughter, Betsy, 14, decided she wanted to take on the sport as well.

During Memorial Day weekend, the fam-

ily tried out to participate in the Empire State Games. Of the 30,000 people who try out to represent their region of New York State, in any sport, only 6,000 make it.

Betsy and Andrew will compete in the scholastic 3-position rifle event. Andrew will also compete alongside his father for the air rifle team.

“I didn’t really think that I was going to make it,” said Andrew, although he’s excited.

Betsy felt the same.

“I was kind of surprised, too. I just started not too long ago,” she said.

Peter said he is excited to have his children with him at the games.

“It’s great. It’s going to be cool,” he said.

“Because they can continue shooting this even when they become adults or senior citizens. With shooting, you can continue doing it your entire life.”

Peter added it’s a sport he hopes other people will try as well.

“It’s something that anybody can do,” he said. “Any age, any size. It’s more about mind over physical bulk. The trick is control and following through and doing that shot after shot.”

Library fundraising campaign aims to raise $125,000 “People who have lost their jobs have had to cut back,” she said. “So, now they can’t buy books, they can’t buy videos for their kids. They maybe had to get rid of their cable or Internet, so they don’t have computers.”

“The hope is by expanding this space ... that we’ll be able to expand those services,” added Trombly.

Another reason the money is needed is because the new library will allow for handicapped accessibility.

“Our library is not,” she said. “We have a lot of seniors, they just can’t get in [the current library] because they can’t climb the stairs.”

CHAZY — In November 2009, trustees of the Chazy Public Library signed a resolution to accept the office space willed to them

by Dr. George Clark. Now, they are looking to the community to help them make the transition.

The trustees have began a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising at least $125,000 toward a $250,000 matching grant.

“If we don’t have the money, we can’t apply for the matching grant,” explained board secretary Tina Trombly.

The first fundraising effort by the trustees included writing letters to businesses and individuals in the town.

“The community has been very generous,” Trombly said. “Basically, it was an appeal through this letter-writing campaign to let them know that one, Dr. Clark had willed us his office building and that we had accepted it as a gift and that we needed to raise money.”

Trombly said. “We can’t tap them dry. So, we thought we can always branch out a bit.

These people may have friends in other areas.”

“So, I think it’s going to be fun,” she added.

Other ideas include “Dinner with Friends,” where a member of the Friends of the Library could have a picnic or dinner with friends and family, but actually charge them to come.

Trombly said the trustees have also contacted the family of Julius Caesar Hubbell, of whom the current library is a memorial.

“They’re having a big 100th family reunion thing going on this summer,” said Trombly. “We thought, ‘Maybe they don’t all know that we’re doing this.’”

Trombly hopes by having them contacted, they may want to help.

“If we get anything, great. If we don’t, oh well. At least it’s another effort,” she said.

One of the main reasons Trombly hopes people will give money towards the library is because with the current economy, the bigger library space is needed.

Through the letter-writing, the library has already received $14,000 in donations, just since March.

However, Trombly figures with the donations promised by some donors, the amount of money towards the grant is actually much higher.

“We have one lady who is donating $20,000 for a room in the library,” explained Trombly. “I think we’re somewhere in the ballpark of $90,000.”

The next plan the trustees have come up with for the campaign is “Book ‘Em for the Library.”

Ten community members will aim to raise $500 each, culminating at Old Home Days later this month.

“They have to try to raise bail money because they have overdue books,” laughed Trombly. “If they haven’t made all of their bail ... at Old Home Days we’re going to try to finish off and try to finish getting their bail money.”

The idea for this campaign came because the trustees felt the need to “branch out.”
