BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Central School district budget wasn’t as favorable to voters the second time around.

PLATTSBURGH — The 13th annual Great Adirondack Car Show/Craft Fair/Giant Garage Sale was held at the Crete Memorial Civic Center June 18.

The city of Plattsbur gh, Chauvin Agency, WOKO 98.9 and WIR Y Hometown Radio teamed up with the North Country Chamber of Commerce to host the event, along with several class sponsors. Car show participants from New York, Vermont and Canada competed in 30 different classes.

Collins, Opal receive Elizabeth Heins survivorship award

ALTONA — The annual Elizabeth R. Heins Inspirational Survivorship A ward was a warded t o n ot o ne, b ut two recipients this year.

Janice A. Opal, Morrisonville, and Elli Collins, Plattsburgh, wer e given the honor this year at the annual Treasure Chests Soirée held recently at the Rainbow and Banquet Hall.

Opal was honor ed for her involvement in every known cancer awar eness or ganization in the North Country, being active in the annual Plattsburgh Relay for Life, Reach to Recover, and the T reasure Chests br east cancer support group. Her participation in “Camp Braveheart,” an oncology camp for women with breast cancer, and performing with “The Boobie Sisters,” a musical comedy gr oup consisting of br east cancer survivors, also topped the list for her accomplishments read during the awards ceremony.

“Jan’s positive attitude and courage during diagnosed and tr eatment have been an inspiration to all,” Dr . Robert Heins r ead fr om a plaque made in Opal’s honor.

Opal s aid w hen t he a ward was first established, she said wanted to one day aspire to be the kind of person Elizabeth Heins was known for being and fit the criteria of who an honoree would be.

“I didn’t want to with the intent of winning the awar d, but doing the things this represents was a goal to become a better person,” she said.

Collins was applauded for her work with the Reach to Recovery pr ogram and being someone to turn to in her role as an oncology clinical nurse specialist.

“Elli is admir ed and loved by all,” said Heins. “Y ou can call on her anytime and she always knows the right thing to say.”

“It’s a real honor, because I have been doing this for so long and I pr obably know thousands of people who have

gone thr ough br east cancer ,” said Collins. “All the people that I meet ar e my inspiration.”

Though Collins has never had cancer herself, she knows the importance of being ther e for people who have — and it hits close to home.

“My sister is a 24-year survivor [of breast cancer],” said Collins. “In one way or another, unfortunately , everyone eventually has some sort of connection to cancer.”

The Elizabeth R. Heins Inspirational Survivorship Award was established in 2005 by the T reasure Chests breast c ancer s upport g roup, through CVPH Medical Center, in memory of Elizabeth Heins. The awar d is given in honor of Heins, who battled several medical issues, including breast cancer.

Opal and Collins now join the list of past re cipients of the award, which includes Gracelyn Murphy, Cindy T opnick, Marie Beemer , Libby Goller , Barb Nephew and Bonnie Berry.

Essex Theatre Company ready to take the Strand stage this month PLATTSBURGH — The Essex Theatre Company announces performances for their 2011 summer mounting of “Rent,” a musical

by Jonathan Larson at the Strand Theatre located at 25 Brinkerhoff St. There will be an opening gala event July 19, starting at 6 p.m. with the performance at 8 p.m. Performances are July 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 at 8 p.m.; July 23 at 2 p.m.; and July 24 at 6 p.m.

“Rent” is under the direction of Derrick A. Hopkins, with musical direction by Jennifer Moore, chor eography by Antonette Knoedl and technical dir ection by Nikki Hilchey .

The Essex Theatre Company, Inc. is a not-forprofit organization located on the shor es of Lake Champlain in the historic Town of Essex, New York.

Performances will be held at the Strand Theatre due to complications due to flood-

ing to the Masonic Lodge in Essex.

“The musical, ‘Rent,’ is arguably the most influential musical of the ’90s. It seems that every decade a musical comes along and epr resents the social climate of that time,” said Hopkins. “I have been very conscious of trying to inform my cast of the social climate during the late ’80s/early ’90s towar ds the AIDS epidemic and the discrimination of homosexuals in addition to the ostracized community of people struggling with addiction.

This generation is very tolerant and accepting of all people and the idea of discrimination due to race, re ligion, addiction, and sexual orientation is a very for eign concept to them. This experience has given me to opportunity to r esearch, r elive, communicate, and incorporate these and other social issues into th e a rtistic f olds o f t he s how. I a m s o grateful to my talented cast and cr ew for

having the energy and intelligence to take on this controversial show.”

“I became familiar with this show in High School when the movie came out and immediately fell in love,” Brittany Leigh Glenn, who plays Mimi, said. “Then, when I was 18, my parents got me tickets to see the show on tour and thatwas when I got to see howspectacular this show really was. I am thrilled to be a part of this production. Not only are my fellow cast members extremely talented, but they have so much passion for theatre and portraying these characters and that’s what I think makes this production so special.”

“I have wanted to participate in a production of ‘Rent’ since I watched the movie many years ago,” Dana McLaughlin, who plays Mark, said. “I came into this cast knowing a few members but I re ally feel like we all have gr own to know each other and

make this such a great experience.”

“Playing Tom Collins has been a dr eam come tr ue,” Michael Ber gman said. As a character, he helps bring together the other characters in the show. He is down to earth, kind, a nd c onfident, a nd q uite i ntelligent, but at the same time a bit irr esponsible. He commits in his heart completely to the one he loves, and is devoted to his friends and ideals, but cannot commit to a purpose in life.”

Tickets for the performances will be sold in advance for $12 or at the door for $15.

Westport’s shared community building could be a state model

I

t’s time to bring things together in the town of Westport. Since 2002, a committee made up of members of the Town of Westport and Department of Public Works, Westport Central School District and Westport Volunteer Fir e Department have been working to find a way to upgrade their bu ildings w hile ke eping t axes d own for members of the municipalities.

Their proposal is a new municipal center, which will house all four entities in one form or another , fr om town of fices, courthouse, garage bays and repair facilities.

After a f ailed v ote o ver a y ear a go, t he committee has sent the proposed bond resolution back before the voters, hoping that the second time and an incre ase of public information sessions and communication will reverse a seven-vote defeat.

Voting in favor of this measure is the right way to go, not only for the futur e of Westport but for the futur e of the North Country.

For years, the New York State Comptroller ’s office, as well as state lawmakers like Elizabeth “Betty” Little and Teresa Say-

ward, have been advocating shar ed services among municipalities, and a combined building to house multiple entities is the perfect e xample o f h ow t hese g roups c an work together to save taxpayers money.

Westport could be an example for the state to use, showing others how to work together.

While thr ee smaller buildings may cost less in terms of building, you ar e going to pay thr ee times as much for engineering studies, planning, zoning pr ocess, permitting, labor, heating, maintenance and general costs incurred by r unning a municipal building. That puts an added long-term burden on the taxpayers of the community that is not needed or wanted. In short, we feel that a vote against this pro ject would be a vote for incr eased taxes over the long term, which is something no one wants to face, anywhere.

Many municipalities in the North Country ar e faced with this issue. Buildings do not last as long because of the harsh weather conditions. V ehicles cannot be le ft o utside in the cold months, either because the

water in a fir e tr uck would fr eeze or the stress of starting vehicles in cold weather would severely decrease the life of the vehicles, adding more on the backs of the taxpayers.

Most towns are facing the same decisions with multiple pr operties, and, as W estport School Board member Dwayne Stevens said at a recent meeting, four walls to take car e of is better than 12 or more.

This plan would also get two pieces of property back onto the tax rolls in the WADA building and the curr ent site of the firehouse. Even if the worst-case scenario is realized and these buildings have to be taken down, they ar e both pr operties in the heart of the downtown ar ea and would be profitable on the tax rolls.

It also doesn’t take any more property off the tax rolls, since the site would be built on the curr ent town shed pr operty. Building elsewhere — like the W estport Industrial Park, would mean a loss in revenue for the town, even with no one curr ently building there.

Every municipality knows that the mor e

money they can get on the tax rolls, the less impact it will have on all. If you have three pieces of tax-exempt pr operty and you can add even just one of those parc els back onto the rolls — building or not — you do it.

We do empathize with the loss of a town hall near what is consider ed the town center, but, in all honesty, we now live in an automotive society where it is not a har dship to travel an extra mile for services. For sentimental r easons, it should stay . However, the WADA building in Westport used to be a hub of teenage activity fr om community center nights to dances and other events.

None of that happens there now.

Times change. In or der to keep up with the times, we must as well.

nce again we are being told we are at the brink of financial disaster. If no agreement between the houses and the president is agreed to by month's end, the country will surpass the debt ceiling in early August. Those who understand the inner workings of the federal government warn that if a deal is not in place by the 22nd of July that we won’t have time avoid a default.

While the debt limit has been adjusted already once this year in early May to $14,294 trillion, an attempt to bump it to $16.7 trillion was defeated in late May . Since 2001, Congress has voted to raise the debt limit 10 times.

With neither side talking to each other at this point it, would appear as we reach the precipice, both sides will agr ee on yet another debt limit increase in place of solving the issues that divide the two sides and in many ways divide our country.

Keep same-sex relationships behind closed doors Few clear -thinking people would argue with the wisdom of not glorifying smoking thr ough various avenues in popular cultur e. We see nothing wr ong with rating TV shows and movies “objectional” for younger viewers if smoking is glorified or presented as a desirable activity. W e make laws to protect the minds of our pre-pubescent, impr essionable childr en fr om age inappropriate content; be it language, violence, sexual, etc. W e r ecognize the harm that can be done to our young by exposing them to cir cumstances and ideas befor e they ar e r eady to pr ocess them with an adult mind.

Today we find rh etoric and anger has been growing over the past several decades with each side growing farther apart. The parties seem to be split on nearly every issue and while we’re a long way from a civil war the time to solve these issues is now , not later.

If the parties or their leaders can’t make it happen, then we need to start getting mor e involved and demand mor e accountability from our elected officials.

With the 2012 pr esidential campaigns starting to heat up, I wonder if Lieberman and McCain had it right in 2008, when McCain consider ed Lieberman as his VP r unning mate. If we can’t get a true independent in the highest of fice, per haps we need one from each party who can agree to work together and lead their parties to the table to reach true compromise. We all know that won’t happen, but clearly something needs to change the tr end or I fear we ar e in for more of the same as wezigzag from one election to another and the divide once again threatens the Union.

How to prepare for dreaded late blight Exercise and stress relief

nyone who gr ows tomatoes r egularly, does not forget the late blight epidemic that hit the are a two years ago.

In 2009, the blight was br ought up very early in the season on a shipment of tomatoes from the south. We then had the ideal condition for the blight to spr ead as the weather was cool and wet all summer long. Many avid gardeners are now desperate for any news of late blight in the area.

So far no late blight has been found in the area this year. Early in the season, blight was found in a gr eenhouse in Maine, which was quickly eliminated. Recently, late blight was found in Long Island. If weather conditions ar e good, late blight could eventually make its way up to the North Country on storm fronts. While this is not a death sentence for our tomatoes and potatoes this year , it does mean that we should be vigilant for any signs of the disease in our gardens.

The earliest symptoms of the disease are brown spots, or lesions, on the leaves and stems of the tomato and potato plants. The lesions begin as small, firm spots that ar e olive-green in color and quickly grow in size. The spots ar e slightly fuzzy and white when conditions have been humid such as early in the morning or after the rain. Sometimes the border of the spots is yellow and has a water soaked appearance. The lesions can develop on the fruit. Once infected, the stems and fr uit quickly collapse and rot.

Any home gar dener wishing to try to contr ol late blight with fungicides needs to begin spraying fungicide befor e symptoms appear. There is no treatment that offers one hundr ed per cent control, but copper and products containing cholorthalonil can of fer some pr otection. Befor e applying any fungicides, home gar deners should thoroughly read any product’s instructions and follow them carefully. Over application of fungicides or not waiting the proper amount of time between application and harvest may be harmful. Even if using a fungicide, gard eners should inspect for late blight symptoms r egularly and immediately contact your local Cornell Cooperative Extension if symptoms do appear . If your plant is diagnosed with late blight, it will need to be destro yed immediately to prevent the disease from spreading.

Late blight is very destru ctive. If no action is taken it will kill plants faster than any other disease.

But the good news is, the disease is still hundreds of miles away fr om us. Late blight often makes a yearly appearance on Long Island without ever making its way north. If we are luckily, all we will have to do is monitor our gar dens for the disease and never see it here this year!

Clinton County Health Department warns public to beware of dogs

PLATTSBURGH — When ther e ar e days where it’s nice to go for a str oll with your children, ther e’s something Rita Mitchell says you should keep in mind.

Mitchell, principal sanitation with the Clinton County Health Department’s department of envir onmental health, said it’s very important to understand potential dangers when you encounter what you may think are cuddly canines.

“The thing is, all dogs have the capacity to bite,” said Mitchell.

The food pantry started noticing an increase in demand last summer, as unemployment rates continued to climb. It was then the pantry began to see an average of two to three new families seeking assistance each week. The Rev. Al Johnson, pastor of the Mooers United Methodist Church, one of the congr egations which helps the Mooers W esleyan Ch urch o versee i ts food pa ntry, said seein g the continued incr ease in need staggers him.

“I just get blown away,” said Johnson. “In December, on just one T uesday, we served 55 families. I think that was a record.”

The f ood p antry r elies contributions fr om the community, said Johnson, including nonperishable food items, fresh produce

from local gar dens, and monetary donations.

Without them, ther e would be no food pantry, he said.

“If we wer en’t her e, there are families who are just getting by that would be devastated,” said Johnson. “If we wer en’t here, those families would be hurting even more than they are now.”

Those inter ested in making a donation of food or money to the Mooers Food Pantry may contact Shirleen Buskey at 236-9228 to make arrangements, or stop by the food pantry at the Mooers Wesleyan Church, 149 Maple St., Tuesdays, fr om 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Usually, the child has permission to play with the animal because it’s the family pet or the neighbor ’s dog,” said Mitchell.

One way to avoid potential bites is for parents to monitor their children when playing with animals, said Mitchell.

“What’s the worst is when you hear about a child about 12 months old that is bitten and nobody saw it happen,” said Mitchell. “Children that age especially should not be left alone with an animal.”

And, the breed of the animal does not necessarily make a difference when it comes to

the risk of being bitten, said Mitchell.

“Golden r etrievers, poodles, any br eed can bite. You really can’t pinpoint one particular breed,” she said.

In 2008, the Clinton County Health Department recorded 292 animal bite investigations. That num ber r ose to 316 cases in 2009, and lessened to 300 in 2010. Though the cases also involve animals other than dogs, Mitchell noted taking safety pr ecautions around animals can lessen the amount of incidents in the future.

“If you ar e bitten, seek medical attention right away, even if it’s a small nip,” said Mitchell. “It’s best to consult with a doctor.”
