MORRISONVILLE — The Clinton County Fair continues its mission of providing high-quality entertainment that’s both fun for the whole family and easy on the wallet.

The fair will r eturn t o the Clint on C ounty Fairgrounds Tuesday, July 19, thr ough Sunday, July 24, celebrating its 64th year. And, just as the fair’s tradition has been to bring events, shows and activities to wow people of all ages, it’s again focusing on being affordable, said fair manager Glenn J. Gillespie.

The M ega P ass has r eturned this y ear, as a means of keeping costs down for fairgoers. The pass — which went on sale June 20 and will only be available until the start of the fair — allows people admission to the fair any one day of the week and includes rides all day long. The pass is being sold at the Clinton County Fairgrounds office for $20 or for $19 at Price Chopper stores in Plattsburgh and Champlain.

The price of admission to this year’s grandstand events will also be kept at an affordable level, said Gillespie. The grandstand, which will be sponsored by Akwesasne Mohawk Casino , will k ick off Tuesday with Hot el Calif ornia original tr ibute t o The Eagles , per forming on the Casella Waste Management Stage, along with the Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers car show.

“I was sent a video of these guys and they ar e just unbelievable,” s aid G illespie. “They s ound a nd l ook j ust l ike [ The Eagles]. I think they ’re going t o be a tr emendous show.”

Admission for that performance — sponsored by WIRY Hometown R adio, Rober ts Spor ts C enter, TD Bank , and Econo Lodge Inn and Suites — will be only $5. The show will be followed by fireworks at dusk by Pyrotechnico Fireworks Display.

“North Country Has Talent,” what’s becoming an annual tradition at the fair seeking local talent, will be in the spotlight at the Curtis Lumber Stage, with qualifying rounds being held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The cost to enter is $10, with divisions for children ages 12 and younger and adults ages 13 and older.

The contest — sponsored by 97.5 Eagle Country, Pepsi, Cumberland 12 Cinemas, Reithoffer Shows, and Kneucraft Fine Jewelry — will wrap up with a finaleThursday at 8 p.m.

The finale will have prizes for adults of $500 cash and a $500 gift certificate to Kneucraft Fine Jewelry for first place, $500 cash for second, and $250 for third. Prizes for children will be $100 cash and a $100 g ift certificate to Kneucraft Fine Jewelry f or first place , $50 cash f or second , and $25 f or third. Trophies will also be awarded to all winners.

Those in the children’s division who make it to the finale but who donot land in the o t p three won’t walk away empty-handed, however.

“Thanks to Cumberland 12, Reithoffer Shows, and Pepsi, they’ll be getting movie passes, wristbands for rides and Pepsi products,” said Gillespie. “So, nobody really loses at the finale.”

On Wednesday, the Gra ymont Materials Racetrack will featuring free harness racing at 12 p.m., with even more action planned that night. C ountry music ar tist Jerrod N iemann, k nown for many hit singles include “What Do You Want,” will perform, bringing a little star power to the fair.

“We’re really excited to have him. As soon as tickets went on sale, the phones started ringing,” said Gillespie, adding Niemann’s per formance will be sponsor ed by 97.5 Eagle Country, Key R-D Trailer Sales, T.D. Bank, and Econo Lodge Inn and Suites.

The fun continues Thursday, with a miniature horse pull at 12:30 p.m. and horse pull at 3 p.m. sponsored by Chauvin Agency. Gillespie noted the miniature horse pull will be a new addition this year.

Also Thursday, one of the fair ’s r eturning fa vorites, a michigan eating contest sponsored by M cSweeney’s Red Hots, will begin at 5 p.m. Cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 will be a warded to first, second and thir d places, respectively.

On Friday, the main event will be a street legal truck pull at the Casella Waste Management Stage in front of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Grandstand, sponsored by Budweiser, beginning at 6 p .m. The event is back f or its fif th year. Admission will be $2 f or grandstand and $5 for a pit pass.

Several other ev ents are planned f or Saturday, including an FFA judging contest for students at 9 a.m., and a Legacy Paintball match behind the fair office from 12-2:30 p.m. The day will also include a tractor pull by the Adirondack Tractor P ullers A ssociation sponsor ed by Dragoon ’s Farm Equipment and Verizon at the CasellaWaste Management Stage, beginning at 3 p.m.

On Sunday, the final day of the fair, the highly-soughtafter annual D emolition Derby will r eturn for two shows, to be held at 1 and 7 p .m. Admission will be $6 per show or $10 for a pit pass o f r admission to both shows. The event will be sponsored by Budweiser and Rent-A-Wreck.

On opening day, admission will be $2 or f ages 4 and older. D onations of nonper ishable f ood it em f or the P lattsburgh I nterfaith Food Shelf ar e encouraged with admission.

Wednesday will be “Children’s Day” at the fair, with free admission f or childr en ages 12 and y ounger. Wristbands will also be sold for unlimited rides all day, courtesy of Reithoffer Shows, for $19 each or $18 with a coupon. A similar offering will be heldThursday night with“Evening Madness” as wr istbands will be sold f or $16, allowing w earers unlimited rides from 7 p.m. to close that night.

On F riday, the fair will host “Senior Da y,” off ering discounted admission f or senior citiz ens ages 62 and older .

Friday will also be“Special Day for Special People,” with free admission for the mentally- challenged and half-pr ice admission for counselors and guardians, with proof of group required. Wristbands will be sold again for unlimited rides all day.

On Saturday, wristbands for unlimited rides will be sold from 12 to 5 p.m. for $16 and will be good until 6 .pm. Wristbands will be sold then o f r $18 and be good until the close of the fair that day, The fair’s tradition of offering free daily shows will also continue this y ear. Shows will include per formances by family entertainers Buffalo Bar field, Pipsqueak the Clown, hypnotist Michael Blaine, and, new this year, the Indian River Olde Time Lumberjack Show, sponsored by Walmart. An exhibition by Masters of the Chainsa w Sculptors will also return, with works up for auction Sunday at 4 p.m.

The six-day event will also include performances by local bands , numer ous 4-H exhibitions , FFA sho ws, horse shows, cattle shows, a goat and sheep show , and — new this year — canine demonstrations and a meat goat open show w ill a lso r ound o ut t he f air, a s w ell a s d aily 5 0/50 drawings.

A returning favorite will be a nightly sawdust pile where people of all ages will be able t o hunt for coins hidden in a large pile of sawdust. Gillespie said $100 in coins is hidden each da y bef ore the star t of the cont est leading t o great anticipation prior to the event.

This year, the fair has tak en its emphasis on “local” one step farther, teaming up with the Adirondack Coast Visitor Bureau to bring to the fair its new Adirondack Coast Agricultural Barn dedicated to local agriculture. Local wineries will be on display, with wine tastings offered. Local maple syrup pr oducers and cheesemak ers will also be among those exhibiting.

“It’s a great addition to the fair to have these local businesses highlighted,” said Gillespie.

The main suppor t for the hundr eds of ac tivities at the fair i s du e m ainly t o t he g enerosity o f i ts s ponsors, s aid Gillespie. The full list of sponsors will be post ed on the sponsor board at the entrance to the fairgrounds.

“We want t o make it aff ordable for people t o come t o the fair,” said Gillespie . “We’re doing our best t o help the community have a good time and keep families in the area to have a good, family-oriented time.”

The fair will be open daily with ev ents starting as early as 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be held at 6 p.m. July 19. Summer Gillespie will sing the National Anthem, accompanied by the C umberland Bay Barbershoppers. This year, the Canadian National Anthem will also be performed as a tribute to “our neighbors to the north,” said Gillespie.

SARANAC — Carrie Favar o hopes ther e will one day be a cure for a rare neurological disorder that affects someone near and dear to her.

Favaro’s niece, Hannah Sames, who lives in the downstate hamlet of Rexfor d, was diagnosed with giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) in 2007, at the age of four. The disorder consists of dysfunction of a specific type of pr otein in the body’s nerve cells and has af fected how Hannah — daughter of North Country natives Matt and Lori Sames — walks, making it hard for her to maintain her balance.

“Hannah has been doing as well as she can,” Favaro said.

“She’s actually dancing in what will be her last dance ecital r this weekend. We thought last year would be her last year dancing, but she was able to do it another year.”

Hannah loves to dance, said her aunt. Even though Hannah is fully aware of her condition and now has to have assistance w hen o n s tage, t here’s n o p lace s he’d r ather b e, Favaro said.

“I know when she goes on stage Saturday night, she’ll be in her glory,” Favaro said. “Even with someone holding onto her. She just wants to be on stage.”

Though Hannah doesn’t question her condition and simply accepts the car ds she’s been dealt, Favar o said she and the rest of Hannah’s family and friends won’t stop questioning what can be done for Hannah and others like her . The combined efforts of Hannah’s family and friends — under the nonpr ofit or ganization Hannah’s Hope Fund — have amounted to $2.4 million raised to research and find a cure for GAN. That is something that still amazes Favaro when she stops to think about it.

“It’s overwhelming,” she said. “W e’re so involved with finding a cure and holding all these events that we don’t step back and think about that. W e r eally have done a lot with the remarkable group of people we have.”

But, Hannah’s Hope Fund is not done yet, Favaro said.

Through events downstate where Hannah and her family live to ones locally like the annual Hannah’s Hope Fund Benefit Dinner at the Rainbow W edding and Banquet Hall, every penny counts, said Hannah’s mother.

Currently, Hannah’s Hope Fund is funding a natural history study on GAN that charts the untr eated course of the disease, with the goal of obtaining clinical outcome measures.

“This is required by the [Food and Drug Administration] in order to begin a clinical trial,” said Sames, who also serves as executive director of Hannah's Hope Fund. “The outcome measures obtained from the natural history study ar e used to measure efficacy of treatment during the clinical trial.”

The FDA requires a plan of how to measur e if an experimental drug or drug product is reversing, slowing, stopping or having no impact on the pr ogression of a disease, said Sames. The research of GAN so far has yielded promising

be a particularly heavy burden on the building inspectors of fice to inspect chickens - they'll only need to inspect any structure added to the lot, as they do now with accessory use buildings on lots. A small licensing fee can be introduced to cover said costs.

Myth 3: What about pr operty values?: Some of the more desirable cities in the country with continued property value strength and job growth have chicken friendly government and city ordinances - some going so far as to have annual coop parades and other fun community events.

Sophisticated cities of the 21st century recognize the importance of sustainability - including some of the small steps that individuals can take on their own. Steps like chicken rearing and home gardening.

I urge city residents to support this initiative and take part in advocating for the right to keep a limited number of pet chickens.

Rose chafers can be one major pain Wait a sec ... You’re eating what?

I

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, it is that time of the year wher e we start to see beetles eating their way through our prized gar den plants. Two of the most common and destructive beetles we see in our ornamental plantings — trees, shr ubs, and per ennials — are the r ose chafer and Japanese beetles. The r ose chafers ar e the first to appear during the summer.

The rose chafer, Macrodactylus subspinosus (Fabricius), is a tan, long-legged slender beetle from 8-12 millimeters long. The r ose chafers damage plants by feeding on the flowers, newly-set fruit and foliage. On roses, it skeletonizes the leaves in the same way as other scarab beetles like the Japanese beetle. It feeds on the foliage of many different plants and it is gr eatly attracted by flowers.

Adult beetles emer ge fr om the soil in late May through early June and they live for about one month. Mating occurs soon after emergence and the females lays 24 to 36 eggs continuously for about two weeks in the soil in grassy sandy areas. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow in the soil and feed on the r oots of grasses and weeds. They overwinter as a larvae and continue development in the spring.

The full-gr own larva or gr ub is white and measures up to 18 mm in length. Pupation oc-

curs in the spring. Luckily, for us, the r ose chafer has only one generation per year.

Rose chafers can be handpicked and destr oyed if the infestations ar e light. Pr otective barriers made fr om cheese cloth or row cover can also be used to keep the beetles off of your prized plants.

Rose chafers can be very numerous especially in ar eas with sandy soils. In these cases, insecticides may not give satisfactory contr ol as r ose chafers can move in fro m surrounding untreated areas or the insecticides do not seem to pre vent feeding activity for very long. However , after about two to thr ee weeks of heavy damage the beetle numbers appear to subside.

One inter esting fact about r ose chafers is that the beetles have a chemical that af fects the heart of small, warm-blooded animals. Because of this, rose chafers should not be fed to your backyard chicken flock.

Next week, I’ll write about Japanese beetles.

Again, read the ingredient list. You may be surprised to find that you’r e not simply eating turkey br east, you ar e most likely eating highly pr ocessed turkey meat with all kinds of additives including high amounts of sodium and pr eservatives, which have been compr essed together to give you a big round ball resembling an actually turkey br east, which is then shaved down to give you your lunch meat.

that you don’t have to go search for an ingr edient list. They ar e r eal food, they came fr om the earth, not some factory . So, next time you go shopping, r eally stop and think befor e you buy . Is this going to nourish me (which is why we eat by the way , for nourishment so that we can thrive) or just make me feel (and look) full?

I could go on and on about this topic, but I’ll keep it simple. Just eat real food.

It may take a little more of your time for preparation and yes, the price tag may be more. But, remember why we eat. We eat to live. Now , if you want to live a full healthy life, you need to fuel your body with nutrient-rich foods. Stay away fr om food that comes in packages, those that I like to call “frankenfoods,” and choose foods that ar e highest in nutrients like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean pr oteins including beans and legumes, nuts and seeds.

Strawberry Festival celebrating 30th year of serving up sweet treats

PLATTSBURGH — It’s almost time for strawberries.

The congr egation of Plattsbur gh United Methodist Chur ch is getting ready for their annual Strawberry Festival which celebrates its 30th year next Thursday, June 30.And, it’s an event people like festival chair Margaret Tallman are getting excited about.

“It’s a big event,” said Tallman. “It takes a lot of willing volunteers — about 50 to 70 people — and we actually start planning for it in Febr uary. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.”

Each year, the festival follows its tradition of serving up strawberries — whether it be on strawberry shortcakes, in strawberry sundaes or just plain by themselves — and they do it in huge amounts.

“We get our strawberries fr om

Rulf’s Or chard and we used to get 200 pounds. Nowadays, we’ve been getting about 300 to 400 pounds,” said Tallman. “And, we sell about 200 quarts that ar e fr eshly-picked and deliver ed by Rulf ’s so people can purchase them at the church.”

“It’s a lot of strawberries,” she added, laughing.

Even though the festival’s name focuses on strawberries, ther e’s much mor e served up at the event, said Tallman. Festival-goers can also choose to enjoy a “picnic far e” meal of michigans, barbecue meatballs, baked beans and other homemade selections.

“And, most people do come for the complete meal,” said Tallman.

The Strawberry Festival is an event that has gr own in popularity year after year , said T allman, who has been a part of its planning for the past 27 years. The event was established as a way for the chur ch’s finance committee to help fund church

mission pr ojects and it was an idea that proved to be rather fruitful.

“It’s actually been held more than 30 years, but this is the 30th consecutive year,” said Tallman. “When the church was on Oak Stre et, it was held on the church lawn until the chur ch burned in a fire in 1956.”

The event was help sporadically after that at the Beekman Street location until 1982 when the festival began being held once again on an annual basis.

“It’s gr own so much every year .

We have so much support fr om the community fr om friends of the church to businesses like Rulf ’s.

That’s what’s helped it gr ow,” said Tallman.

Ground broken for new CVPH ‘Circle’ PLATTSBURGH — The Foundation of CVPH Medical Center has broken ground for the Circle of Healing and Hope.

Ceremonial shovels were used to break ground for the project on the hospital's fr ont lawn June 14. When complete, the Cir cle of Healing and Hope will pr ovide "a place for serenity and reflection and be part of the inviting landscape of CVPH grounds.

The Circle of Healing and Hope will consist of an “Angel of Hope” statue at its center, based on the angel monument in “The Christmas Box,” a best-selling novel by Richard Paul Evans. In the novel, a woman mourns the loss of her child, drawing solace at the base of a statue of an angel. Though similar angel statues have been commissioned across the country with the purpose of being dedicated solely to children who have passed away, the CVPH statue will be er ected to memorialize anyone of any age.

The statue will be surr ounded by engraved granite paving stones, that will lead up to the statue from an existing sidewalk on the fr ont lawn, and cir cle the statue.

Stones are available for sponsorship — at a cost of $150

for a 9-inch by 6-inch stone or $500 for a 12-inch by 12inch stone — in order to subsidize the $56,000 cost of the project. Crafted wooden benches ar e be available for sponsorship, featuring plaques with personal messages, for donations of $2,500 or more.

“The Foundation is thrilled with the support this pro ject has r eceived from the community," said Foundation executive director Kerry Haley. "From its inception, people have embraced the idea and we all look forwar d to its completion. W e ar e certain it will be a ser ene and peaceful place for our patients, staff and visitors.”

Early Risers of Plattsburgh began work on the project.

The Foundation of CVPH has been working with Plattsburgh Memorials for several months personalizing the pavers already purchased for the pr oject. It’s expected that the Circle of Healing and Hope will be complete in early August.

Cumberland Bay State Park to remain closed for season Flood damage could pose safety concerns

PLATTSBURGH — Cumberland Bay State Park will r emained closed for the season.

The park was slated to have a pushed back opening of June 23 due to flooding which has affected the r egion, but was of ficially declared closed for the r emainder of the year in an announcement June 20.

Dan Keefe, a representative with the state Of fice of Parks, Recr eation and Historic Pr eservation, which issued the announcement, said the original intention was to open as scheduled earlier in May , but added “Mother Natur e” had other plans.

“We wer e supposed to open then, but that’s when the flooding was going on. So, at that time we postponed the opening in the hopes water levels would r ecede and the park would be able to dry out for camping, picnicking and use of the beach,” said Keefe.

“Mother Nature did not cooperate,” he added.

Prior to the decision being made to close the park for the season, staff members spent the last week touring the park, assessing the damage and what work will need

to be performed.

“It was clear we would not be able to open the park for the summer,” said Keefe, adding flooding may have compr omised the r oots of the trees within the park, which could pose a potential risk of uprooting and falling.

“Our first concern is people’s safety,” he added.

Crews have since begun working to clean up the site which Keefe said would have been a less than favorable condition for those wishing to use the park if it would have remained open.

“It’s going to be noisy work, and I can’t think of anyone who would want to go camping next to wher e chainsaws ar e r unning,” said Keefe.

The work to clean up the site is expected to be wrapped up later this summer, leaving the state focusing on preparing the park for its reopening next summer . The closure will mean a hit to the state’s bottom line, said Keefe, but it’s the belief that by extending the season of operation for nearby Point au Roche State Park and Macomb Reservation State Park thr ough Columbus Day W eekend in October, parkgoers and the state will both benefit. Those parks are traditionally open only until Labor Day Weekend in September, said Keefe.

News of the Week Man accidentally shot himself, according to state police SARANAC — Jamie F. LaPorte, who was found with a life-thr eatening head injury April 10 on Cold Brook Road, accidentally shot himself, according to State Police.

LaPorte, 35, had driven fro m Clark Ray’s home, wher e police found marijuana and guns, when he crashed into a snowbank.

Ray was charged with growing marijuana, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, thir d-degree criminal sale of a weapon, and second-degr ee criminal possession of a weapon.

He was jailed and will appear in Plattsburgh town court on June 20.

Murphy named head of ESD’s northern region PLATTSBURGH — Roseanne Murphy, who has served Empire State Development

for 23 years, has been named the North Country regional director of ESD. She will head the Plattsbur gh and W atertown offices of ESD, in addition to serving as executive director of the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

Kenneth Adams; ESD Pr esident, CEO and Commissioner, said Murphy was an adroit economic developer with a long trackrecord.

Children, families encouraged to check out Chazy Lake Beach Days Summer recreation program slated to start up on July 12

DANNEMORA — Now that summer ’s here, thoughts of fun in the sun on Chazy Lake ar e what’s on Angela Spahr ’s mind.

Spahr, who serves as activities coordinator for the T own of Dannemora Youth Commission, is pr eparing for the return of Chazy Lake Beach Days, the annual summer recreation program hosted by the youth commission at Chazy Lake Beach. The pr ogram brings activities to the beach weekly throughout the months of July and August, inviting kids to come out and have a good time.

“It gives the kids something to do over the summer and it’s a gr eat way to get them interacting with other kids,” said Spahr. “We have kids who come up here only for the summer and it’s especially a good way for them to make new friends.”

Chazy Lake Beach Days will kick of f Tuesday, July 12, and will continue Tuesdays for the next seven weeks.

Each week, str uctured activities will be offered from 1-4 p.m., rain or shine, with themes such as “W orld of Color Day” and “Science Day,” among others.

The July 12 event will featur e a “Minute to Win It” theme based on the popular N BC t elevision s how o f t he same name. Kids will be able to practice, then compete in “a variety of challenging activities” throughout the day. The pr ogram will continue July 19 with “Field Day Games” hosted by the Clinton County Youth Bureau.

During that day’s events, kids will be eligible to win prizes, said Spahr.

“That should be a r eally fun day ,” said Spahr. “We’re hoping to have at least four teams of kids.”

The following weeks will consist of: • “Science Day,” July 26. Kids will be able to conduct various experiments and other activities r elated to the world of science.

• “World of Color Day,” Aug. 2. Tiedying, painting, marbling and other colorful activities will be offered.

• “Beach Day ,” Aug. 9. W ater games, swimming, sand castle-making, and other beach activities to be hosted.

• “Kids Choice Day,” Aug. 16. Additional games, activities, crafts, and programs left over for kids to choose

from.

• “End-of-the-Summer Beach Blast,” Aug. 23. Fear Factor games and other activities.

“We’re crossing our fingers for good weather,” said Spahr, reiterating the program will still be held r egardless of rainy weather.

The activities offered at Chazy Lake Beach Days are at no cost, said Spahr.

The program is geared toward all children of the town of Dannemora, including the village of Dannemora, and the communities of Chazy Lake, Upper Chateaugay Lake, Standish and Lyon Mountain. However, all children will be allowed to participate regardless of where they reside.

“We draw kids fr om Saranac, Dannemora, all over,” she said.

Children younger than 5 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while attending the program and participants must bring their own snacks and drinks. Participants ar e also encouraged to bring a swimsuit, towel, sunblock and shoes comfortable for running.

Bishop wins Wilmington/Whiteface bicycle race qualifying event W I L M I N G TO N — J e re m i a h B i s h o p o f Harrisonburg, V a. was the first rider to cross the finish line, taking top honors in the inaugural W ilmington/Whiteface 100K mountain bike race (WW100), held June 19, in Wilmington.

Bishop raced past the field of 231 cyclists in thr ee hours, 33 minutes, 34.07 seconds.

Sunday’s 57-mile long, out and back race covering the towns of W ilmington, Jay, Keene and Lewis took the cyclists up and down Jay Mountain and Saddleback b e f o re r e t u r n i n g t o W h i t e f a c e w h e r e a 2,501 foot climb awaited for them befor e crossing the finish line.

The women’s field was led by Susan Lynch, (Medfield, Mass.). The 51-year old spinning instr uctor was clocked in 4:51:14.94.

Nicole LaPlante of Per u was second, reaching the bottom of Whiteface Mountain in 4:59:49.52.

Sunday’s race qualified 100 cyclists for the Aug. 13 Leadville 100 MTB (L T 100), in Leadville, Colo. Fifty wer e allocated based on age-group performance and the other 50 wer e distributed by a drawing among the finishers who met the time standard that is specific to each qualifying event.

ollowing a pr olonged, and snow covered, winter , which has been compounded by a r ecord setting, rain soaked, spring; the summer season finally arrived on Tuesday, June 21.

Adirondack summers ar e likely the most fleeting of all our seasons. They occur as visitors and locals alike, join in an attempt to pack a year’s worth of entertainment into just a few, short months.

As always, the season kicks of f with high school graduations, and it departs with an exodus of part-time residents, summer folk and school bound, local kids.

However, sandwiched in between these pr edictable bookends, ther e is usually a whole lot of fun to be had, as the dog days of summer settle in.

An Adir ondack summer offers a series of startling contrasts, wher e fun filled, hot, muggy days ar e often capped by bone chilling evenings, featuring brilliant, star dappled skies, where the silence is br oken only by a crackling fire.

The stars appear to have fallen, as fir eflies begin to flicker in the darkness, and the rising sun is often shrouded by the thick, morning’s mist of lake fog. Soon, the mist clears to r eveal yet another brilliant blue sky , which ushers in another day in a secluded paradise of deep woods, still waters and soaring mountains.

Soon, long lines of tourists will clog country r oads and Main Str eet as well, and yet solitude can still easily be found, over the near est hill, at the local swimming hole or atop a lonely ridge.

Hikers will fill the trails,

seeking just one mor e summit, and paddlers will put up with yet another carry , to find their own, Lost Pond.

Friends and family will begin visiting ‘Up North’ again and summer will be in full swing with clambakes and bar-b-ques, s’mor es and county fairs.

Beaches will fill up and boaters will be everywher e, which makes it crucial to use extra car e. It is no wonder that we relish the season. It is a time that makes all of the other hardships bearable.

So get out and enjoy the summer today, and take a kid along for the ride! After all, summers ar e made for children, and best of all; they serve to bring out the kid in all of us.

It is easy to understand. A cold beer on a hot day has long been considered a common ingredient of the r ecreational scene.

However, when mixing alcohol with cr owded waters, big waves, strong winds and the hot sun; accidents happen. In fact, statistically, they occur about twenty per cent of the time, in one out of every five outings.

As part of their ongoing, enforcement efforts aimed at reducing the number of Boating Under the Influence (BUI) fatalities, the U.S. Coast Guard and other partner agencies will be conducting joint efforts this summer.

The new initiative, Operation Dry W ater, will be launched fr om June 24-26, 2011, with a national weekend of stronger and more visible patr ols to help pr event accidents caused by excessive alcohol and drug use on the water.

Where to go, and what to call it?

Currently, over ninety percent of the US population live within an hour’s drive of waters that ar e suitable for boating. Additionally, there are over 12.4 million, r egistered r ecreational boats in the country.

Recently, the National Marine Manufactur ers Association (NMMA) announced the top ten states for boating, based on annual sales.

According to studies, U.S. sales reached $30.4 billion in 2010, and an estimated 75 million Americans took to the water, an incr ease of 14 percent compar ed to 2009.

Over-expression can be fatal and under-expression will have “little impact,” added Sames, making this “the most critical piece of gene therapy” with “no margin for error.”

The FDA requires Hannah’s Hope Fund begins its re search with the first phase being a safety trial consisting of consenting adults. A second phase would begin four months later in or der for children to receive gene therapy.

Though GAN gene therapy isn’t expected to have an eff ect on subjects who are completely paralyzed, it is expected to restore function to the nerves that are not yet dead.

Want to help Hannah’s Hope?

The third annual Mike Mannix Golf Tournament will be held at the Adirondack Golf and Country Club, 88 Golf Road, this Sunday, June 26.

The tournament is held each year in memory of Hannahʼs great-uncle, Michael J. Mannix, who passed away from cancer in December 2007.

The four-man scramble event begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The cost to enter is $50 for course members and $60 for nonmembers. The cost covers greens fees, a cart, and lunch by Ronnieʼs Michigan Stand.

Nine holes will be regular golfing, said Favaro, with the other nine consisting of “shenanigans” like hula-hooping and using wickets.

“Even the most serious golfers in the past have enjoyed the tournament,” she said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Hannahʼs Hope Fund.
