Chazy native, author helping local charities through sales of his book

PLATTSBURGH — One military veteran is doing what he can to help others who have served their country.

Thomas A. Middleton, a National Guard veteran and native of Chazy, signed copies of his book, “Saber ’s Edge: A Combat Medic in Ramadi, Iraq,” at Peaceful Dove Books and Gifts in Boynton Square last Sunday. However, the book signing wasn’t just pomp and circumstance as a means to sell his 2009 book. It was also a way to get the word out the book’s proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and the James A. Bracy Veterans Scholarship Fund at Clinton Community College.

“When a lot of veterans get back, they don’t have jobs or have a hard time affording books or gas to get back and for from school,” explained his wife, Linda Bracy.

“This helps them with the basics.”

Middleton, who now lives in Essex Junction, Vt., said helping the

scholarship fund has special meaning to him as a Clinton Community College graduate.

“It’s neat to be able to do this, because helping veterans is something I feel especially strong about,” Middleton said of donating a portion of the proceeds from his book sales to the scholarship fund.

“Wherever other programs fall short in helping veterans, the Wounded Warrior Project picks up the slack,” said Middleton.

“Saber ’s Edge” will continue to be sold at Peaceful Dove Books and Gifts, 164 Boynton Ave., with proceeds to help the Wounded Warrior Project and the James A. Bracy Veterans Scholarship Fund.

United Way offering help to flood victims in tri-county area

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region is doing its part for individuals and families affected by the recent flooding that devastated the region.

The nonprofit organization has announced it is offering mini-grants to help

those who have been affected by flooding specifically in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer this assistance for people who have unmet needs because the flooding this spring has been devastating for many families,” said United Way executive director John C. Bernardi.

“And, it’s within our mis-

sion to help people in times of need and times of crises.”

The disaster relief minigrants — made possible by a partnership between the United Way of New York State and the Civil Service Employees Association — are primarily being made available to CSEA members and uninsured households.

The amount of funding available is limited, noted

Bernardi, who emphasized it is important for flood victims to “exhaust all available resources before applying for monies.”

“The main thing is that they have to be unmet needs that are flood-related,” said Bernardi. “It’s for issues that are not covered by other sources. We want to provide this safety net for people who don’t have other re-

‘Eat Dessert First’ event celebrates National Cancer Survivorship Day

PLATTSBURGH — Even if you’ve always been told you couldn’t have dessert until after you finish your dinner, there’s at least one day out of the year where that whole idea is thrown out the window — and for one special reason.

The FitzPatrick Cancer Center hosted “Eat Dessert First: A Celebration of Life” on the CVPH Medical Center grounds June 12. The annual event is as a way to celebrate National Cancer Survivorship Day, explained event coordinator Stacey Lafave.

“It’s something that’s been done probably 20 plus years on the national level,” said Lafave, who noted this year marked it being done for the 17th year locally. “It’s a celebration of people, of survivorship.”

Each year, the event features entertainment and, of course, an assortment of desserts.

“The whole idea behind it is that sometimes you just have to live life,” Lafave said.

Lorna Marx, Beekmantown, has been coming to the event for the past 14 years, ever since she was first diagnosed with and overcame uterine sarcoma at the age of 46.

“I thought it was a death sentence,” said Marx. “I think most people think that when they think about cancer. But, that’s not always the case.”

Marx underwent treatment and surgery for her cancer and was found to be cancer-free six weeks later.

That was something worth celebrating, she said, leading her to attend her first “Eat Dessert First” that year.

“It was really positive,” Marx recalled of the event.

“It was great to see people who were five-, 10-, 20-year survivors.”

The event was so positive, it’s kept Marx coming back each year, she said.

“It’s always been a good

event with great entertainment,” she said. “It encourages people in similar circumstances and gives them a chance to get together. It’s a good reminder that people do survive cancer and they can survive for a long time.”

n an almost daily basis, our inboxes receive reports of yet another idiot being nabbed for trying to sneak drugs or illegal aliens across the U.S.-Canada border. So, it begs the question: What makes these people think they’re so smart?

Sure, there’s probably a percentage that get by undetected. That’s inevitable. There’s really no way to make any system 100 percent foolproof. But how stupid — or desperate — do you have to be to risk charges that could land you in federal prison? In our opinion, very stupid, and apparently the number of stupid people out there isn’t decreasing.

No, she “allegedly” had them stashed away within her vehicle’s gas tank (sure, she could argue they were planted there and she had no idea that she was carrying more than unleaded gas in her tank, but that’s an argument for another day). The point is, people will go to great lengths to pull one over on border guards. But is it really worth the risk?

Across the state, at the Buffalo Port of Entry, another woman apparently thought so. There, a 25-year-old Georgia woman tried in March to conceal about 34,000 ecstasy pills. This time, it wasn’t in her car. She was a little more innovative and decided she was going to pass herself off as an expectant mother, with the drugs being her little bundle of joy.

Amazing.

Rewind back to February and back on our side of the state, a 37-year-old Canadian man created a false floor in his vehicle to hide about 40 pounds of ecstasy pills. Earlier that month, another Canadian man, this time a 54-year-old from Ontario, tried to sneak about 50,000 ecstasy pills through the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. No such luck on both

Chickens in the city City of Plattsburgh residents should be allowed to keep one to four hens in backyard coops. An ordinance should include the following rules: no more than four hens, no roosters, and all chickens kept in coops with small enclosed roaming areas.

Any ordinance should require a permitting process for coops as accessory use buildings based on existing standard set-backs and rules. Permit costs would cover the cost of inspection and permit processing.

These are just a few of the cases that have been reported since the beginning of the year. And, that’s just ecstasy. Marijuana, cocaine, and illegal aliens (yes, we’re getting to that part), are being smuggled across the world’s longest and most unsecured border on a routine basis.

When speaking to officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, getting a clear picture of what consequences face perpetrators can be a little difficult. It all depends on things like the severity of the crime, whether it’s a first-time offense, or if payment is involved for trafficking the contraband or persons. Fines could be levied in the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars range and jail-time could amount to five to 10 years or more — again, based on the details of the case.

Either way, you’d better hope it’s worth doing the time for doing the crime.

What’s the solution to this ever-growing problem? Eternal vigilance. And, though Andrew Jackson said that’s the price of liberty, it’s our belief it’s the key to eternal security.

We have to face facts. In a nation emerging from one of the most devastating financial crises the world has ever seen — and arguably still in the middle

of it with no end in sight — we don’t have the money or the resources to properly secure our border. There simply isn’t enough cash in our coffers to do it. Even with federally funded programs like Operation Stonegarden — which provides money for departments to purchase necessary equipment such as vehicles, license plate readers and cameras to enhance security along the U.S.-Canada border — it’s just a drop in the bucket compared to what it would really cost to properly combat illegal cross-border activity.

What we need is community-active citizens who keep their eyes peeled for suspicious activity and report it. We need more neighborhood watch groups boasting their presence in not just communities along the border, but communities everywhere. It’s only with more eyes and ears out there that we’re going to reduce the criminal element.

Bottom line: If you see something suspicious, report it!

The old saying, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” is something we just can’t escape. Human nature seems titled toward excesses even when the excesses cross the line and become an addiction.

So how are we to blame for what these folks who’ve lost their way have done? We place them on that pedestal, and we keep them there far too long. We turned them into idols and lavish them with praise and honors that go far beyond their own good. We take the simple act

When we allow them to stay in that role too long, grant them the authority to pass laws that do not apply to themselves, give them benefits and opportunities to accumulate riches not afforded the average person, and treat them like royalty, is it any wonder they are bewildered when we suddenly question their actions or even expect them to stand up to their mistakes?

It is the policy of the newspaper to publish that which will “advance the discussion of issues, not to make personal judgments about other contributors.” It also “reserves the right not to publish letters it judges to be inappropriate.”

I'm sure a Speakout from a Muslim tearing down Jewish believers or a Baptist tearing down Catholicism would have been deemed inappropriate. So why was an atheist allowed to disparage those who believe in God and trust in prayer?

This is one example of a growing trend I have noticed in Letters to the Editor and Speakouts of one group (religious, political, etc.) taking swipes at another. A more careful selection of what is printed is needed.

ots of head shaking and joke making have been taking place over the most current fall from grace for U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). In case you haven’t heard, the congressman from New York’s 9th District recently admitted sending explicit pictures of himself to women via various forms of social media, after originally denying he had done so, blaming it on unscrupulous “hackers.”

Congressman Weiner joins an ever-growing fraternity of elected officials, sports heroes, movie stars, celebrities and others so called “superstars” who we, the public, have allowed to be placed on a pedestal above the common person.

In doing so, we set them up for a fall from grace and ourselves for disappointment at their failure.

But, is it really their failure or ours?

Few among us can resist the lure of “fame” and the fortunes and many fringes

even hear chickens, unlike a noisy dog that can keep the whole neighborhood awake (and an enclosed chicken won’t poop in someone else’s yard – also as opposed to dogs).

Chicken keepers, like other pet keepers would be expected to be good pet owners and adhere to common standards: quiet, clean, stink-free.

Unlike other pets, however, backyard chickens produce eggs. Eggs from small home raised flocks are not only safer, but are also more nutritious than eggs from industrial confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and they taste better too. People all over the U.S.A. who care about their family’s food and about the environment are raising chickens in their backyard.

Taxpaying city residents should have the right to raise one to four hens. Small backyard flocks are a practical way to eat locally raised food and to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Hand-raised chickens thrive in small backyard coops and become docile family pets. Raising chickens is an educational and enriching experience for families with children (brooding hens is a popular science fair project, even).

For families with food allergies or sensitivities, home-raised eggs are a wonderful, safe, and inexpensive source of protein. The Common Council and the Mayor should put a Charter Amendment on the ballot in the fall that changes the definition of “Livestock” to allow for the keeping of a limited number of hens on one’s own property. Further, the Council and the Mayor should work to craft an ordinance by which chicken keeping can be a positive experience for all members of the City of Plattsburgh.

must maintain a tight but respectful rein on their actions and never be willing to give them a free pass for lack of commitment or indiscretions to their role.

That is why Congressman Weiner should, without pressure from his constituents or peers, understand that he has violated the people’s trust and can no longer hold public office. He must step down. Unfortunately, he is blinded by his own power and authority and is most likely blaming the majority of his problems on everyone but himself.

And that, in itself, is the root problem for much of what ails our society today. Blame starts at home. We’ve put people into positions that sooner or later will result in a meltdown. It’s up to us to shoulder some of the blame and seek solutions that will help others avoid a similar fate in the future.

Lavender’s cold hardy alternative Finding ways to fit in some fitness

M

y mother-inlaw has large, beautiful lavender plants outside of her front door in southern Pennsylvania. All summer long, the plants produce profuse sweet-smelling blossoms that make me envious. Most lavenders are not cold hardy to northern New York. Luckily, there is a cold hardy perennial that is a wonderful substitute for lavender — Nepeta or catmint.

Nepeta is a member of the mint family that is extremely easy to grow since it has few pest problems and almost thrives on neglect. The plant’s foliage is slightly aromatic and grey-green in color. The flowers can be white, pink, or lavender-blue and bloom on long spikes early in the summer.

Cutting the plants back after the initial bloom often results in both a tidier plant and a new flush of flowers.

This deer-resistant plant is hardy to zone 4 and prefers full sun to part shade. Nepeta does best in a lean soil that is partially sandy. Too much fertilizer causes floppy foliage.

Nepeta is a classic underplanting for roses. The colors complement and the foliage hides the ugly “knees” of the rose bush. It

is also a wonderful plant for edging, for spilling over walls and walkways and for softening spiky plants like iris and yucca. The pastel blues combine well with pinks and yellows, such as day lilies and yarrow (achillea).

Some suggested varieties to try include: “Felix” which is only 12-inch high and has vivid lavender-blue flowers; “Six Hills Giant” which is one of the tallest growing nepetas at 3 feet; “Sweet Dreams” is 2 feet high and has pink flowers with burgundy bracts; and “Walker ’s Low” which is about 2 feet by 2 feet and bears long spikes of lavender-blue flowers.

Most of the newer nepeta varieties are sterile so you won’t be able to propagate them by seed. They do take well to dividing in the spring — which I like. I have some Walker ’s Low growing in front of a service berry tree and know of several other areas where it would look nice in my gardens!

The key is to make it convenient. Try some of the following tips to squeeze more physical activity into your busy day.

Wake up Early: Wake up 30 minutes early and use the time to go for a walk, jog, do yoga, or even strength train.

Make Household Chores Count: When you’re doing your chores, do them at a fast enough pace to get your heart rate going both indoors and out.

Be Active While W atching TV : Use hand weights, ride a stationary bike or do your favorite stretching routine while watching your favorite shows.

Involve The Whole Family: Take family walks before or after dinner. Play catch, or ride bikes. It’s best to work up to 30 minutes of exercise daily, but you can get that in with short bursts throughout the day.

Walk The Dog: If you have a dog, treat him/her to a brisk walk. It will become routine and they will be just as excited about getting exercise as you will be.

Get Social: Some people do better when having a commitment to another person or a group.

Look up some group exercise classes, find a hiking club, or join a team.

Scleroderma not necessarily a death sentence, says local woman

BEEKMANTOWN — Julie Mooso and Wendy Faubert aren’t going to let scleroderma get the best of them if they have anything to say about it.

The two have each been living with the autoimmune disorder for the past few years, with Mooso being diagnosed in 2008 and Faubert in 2005. It’s been a long road for each of them in such a short time, but it’s one that holds a lot of promise, they said.

“The first year, I spent it on the couch. I really couldn’t move much,” said Mooso, formerly of Champlain now of Coatesville, Pa. “But, then I started going to a rheumatologist and got on the right medications and started getting better.”

Mooso, like many she has found who develop scleroderma, had no idea what the disease was, she said.

Neither did Faubert.

“It was pretty bad,” Faubert said of the advancement of her disease.

“I was hospitalized and flown from

Plattsburgh to Albany Medical Center. I spent about six months there.”

The West Chazy woman also sought help from different specialists to see what, if anything, could be done to help her condition.

Through treatments for other conditions she has — which include lupus, pulmonary arterial hypertension, sleep apnea and conditions known as Raynaud's phenomenon and Degos disease, which effect her cardiovascular system — Faubert found something that worked.

“Remodulin,” she said, uttering the word as if it was the answer she had been looking for all along.

The prescription medication, explained Faubert, is used for the treatment of her pulmonary arterial hypertension and has helped improve the symptoms of her scleroderma. The drug is administered through a subcutaneous pump that attaches to the waist of her pants and looks similar to a cell phone.

“I’m going to put some bling on it and dress it up,” she said, laughing, as she showed how the device enters her system through a tube along her stomach line. “It’s some-

ing to help me, I’ll live with it. I highly recommend it.”

The discoloration and rigidness of her hands and skin dissipated and, through a combination of other medications to treat her ailments, Faubert has gone from a woman who needed a wheelchair to maintain her mobility to one who is able to enjoy leisurely strolls like the third annual Scleroderma Walk in Memory of Randy Duprey they both attended last Sunday at the Beekmantown Recreation Park.

“I just can’t believe it. This lady was in a wheelchair. I mean, look at her,” said Mooso, as she hugged Faubert. “She’s beautiful. I’m so happy for her I could cry.”

Seeing her friend’s progress gives her hope, said Mooso.

“I’m definitely going to look into this,” Mooso said of Remodulin.

Kate Duprey, who organizes the local Scleroderma Walk each year in memory of her late husband, said she was amazed at Faubert’s progress and hopes the same for Mooso and others like them.

“It shows there’s hope that there’s something out there that can make this disease go the other way,” said Duprey.

Regional health care providers join to create Adirondack Health Institute PLATTSBURGH — Adirondack Medical Center, Community Providers, Inc. (CVPH Medical Center) and Hudson Headwaters Health Network have joined forces to create the Adirondack Health Institute, a notfor-profit corporation that will help address rapid changes and challenges to the health care system.

AHI will provide leadership for the Adirondack Medical Home Pilot, an innovative initiative begun in 2010 to improve health care quality, increase access to primary care services, and hold down costs.

The pilot includes more than 35 primary care practices (representing some 100 physicians and a like number of physician assistants and nurse practitioners), five hospitals, seven commercial health plans, Medicare and Medicaid, the New York State Department of Health, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and the New York State Association of Counties.

News of the Week Deputy county clerk submits his resignation suddenly PLATTSBURGH — Glenn Olds, deputy county for clerk Clinton County and supervisor of the local Department of Motor Vehicles, has resigned.

Olds’ resignation last week reportedly coincided with word investigators from the office of the state Inspector General were planning to seize his office computer and other documents related to his employment with the county.

Olds was employed with the local DMV for 17 years and formerly served as a councilman for the City of Plattsburgh Common Council from 2001-2003.

No official statement on the investigation into Olds’ files has been made by the Inspector General's office.

Man charged with assault BEEKMANTOWN — William A. Jabaut, 46, Plattsburgh, was arrested June12 for allegedly assaulting his wife.

State police state Jabaut was charged with first-degree criminal contempt with physical contact and third-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury.

Jabaut was arraigned in Town of Beekmantown Court. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.

DWI charge lodged WEST CHAZY — Melissa Benoit, 30, Plattsburgh, was injured following a one-car accident June 12.

State police report Benoit’s vehicle was traveling south on Military Turnpike when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the vehicle to exit the west shoulder of the road.

The vehicle rolled over and struck a drainage pipe.

Benoit was transported to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, with complaints of neck pain. She was treated and later released.

She was charged with driving while intoxicated and received a ticket for moving from her lane unsafely.

Woman charged for break-in CHAMPLAIN — Jerrica L. Spear, 21, West Chazy, was arrested June 8 in connection with a break-in at a residence in May. State police said Spear was arrested but released on her own recognizance. She will appear in court later this month to answer charges.

Lewis Family Farm, state AG finally reach deal

ESSEX — Salim B. “Sandy” Lewis said that he wanted it this way, signing the final pieces of paperwork in a long-running court battle in the Essex County Clerk’s office.

“They wanted me to come down to Albany to do this, but I insisted that this take place where it happened,” Lewis, who finally received settlement in his court victory over the Adirondack Park Agency in 2008.

Lewis said that the settlement in the amount of $71,690.28, represented “closure” to this chapter which started when the APA cited him for houses built on his property for workers on the Lewis Family Farm in 2007.

“Some say that it is not over until the fat lady sings,” Lewis said as he awaited the check from clerk Joseph Provoncha and Assistant Solicitor General Julie M. Sheridan. “In this case, it’s over when you sign the papers.”

Lewis added that he was hopeful that both sides would

be able to put this matter in the past.

“Personally, I feel that it is time for the healing to begin and the fighting to end,” Lewis said.

“I hope that the government feels that same way.”

Two members of the state government, assemblywoman Teresa Sayward and senator Betty Little, were present at the settlement signing.

“This is good for agriculture in Essex County and in the Adirondack Park,” Little said.

“All of the farmers in the county and in the park are going to

be grateful for what (Lewis) has done for them.”

“There is every right given to agencies like the APA to enforce the law,” Sayward said. “but when they overstep their bounds, they need to be held accountable, and today, they were.”

Sheridan, when asked about the settlement, was not as willing to speak on the matter.

Westport marina set to open as waters go down

WESTPORT — As the water continued to approach the magic number of 100-feet, local businesses are starting to think about opening - a thought that seemed out of reach a month ago.

“We are hoping to have full operations going by the first of July,” Larry Carroll of the Westport Marina said. “Right now,

we are open for some business. We are selling items out of the store and we started launching boats on June 14.”

A quite different story from when the marina, Ship’s Store and Galley Restaurant were covered by more than a foot of water at the height of the recent flooding.

Carroll said that once the water subsided in the buildings, the work began to completely gut and restore the facility.

“There has been a lot of hard work that has gone into this,” Carroll said.

“We have had over 40 people volunteer from the community as well as 42 counselors from Camp Dudley. Boy Scouts, friends from church, friends from other towns - they have all helped us so much throughout the floods.”

Carroll said that while they missed out on the Memorial Day weekend income opportunity, they

are hopeful that everything - including the restaurant, will be open in time for the first weekend of July, coupled with the opening of the Depot Theatre season and the Fourth of July Festivities planned for Saturday, July 2.

“This was the first time in 30 years that I did not work on Memorial Day weekend,” Carroll said.

“There were no customers and no boats.

That had never happened

before.”

Carroll said that as he and others open, he hoped that the word would get out that the lakeshore community is back in business.

“I had workers that were being told in school that the marina was not opening,” Carroll said.

“They had to argue that it was, so hopefully people will get the word out that we are going to be open soon.”

Hospital has new diabetes management program ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital has established a diabetes self-management education program.

The program provides education to help patients and their families learn how to successfully self-manage diabetes and its related conditions.

Diabetes self-management education (DSME) classes are developed to help people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes achieve optimal health and a better quality of life through healthy eating, exercise, glucose monitoring, medication, and understanding how to make adjustments to medications and meals, when necessary.

The program offers a great deal of infor-

mation in regard to nutrition. Patients learn how carbohydrate counting, eating healthy fats, controlling sodium intake, and achieving a healthy weight all contribute to successful diabetes control.

At Elizabethtown Community Hospital, diabetes self-management education is offered by a team of healthcare professionals including a certified diabetes educator, registered nurse, pharmacist, dietitian and exercise specialist. Physician referral is required; and most health insurance plans cover patient participation.

According to Mary White-Ferris, certified diabetes educator at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, this program provides a won-

derful opportunity to learn about making diabetes a very controllable condition.

Individual and group classes are offered at the hospital over a 4 - 6 week period; each class lasts approximately 2 hours. The program complements the hospital’s diabetes support group, which meets once a month in the hospital boardroom.

The diabetes self-management education program at Elizabethtown Community Hospital was recently accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Fed’l government issues disaster declaration

chris@denpubs.com WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Barack Obama declared late last week that 21 upstate New York counties suffered a major disaster as a result of widespread flooding earlier this spring, freeing up federal funds to pay for cleanup and repairs.

Franklin, Essex, and Clinton counties are among those designated as a federal disaster area. In the North Country alone, dam-

age to public property is estimated at well over $25 million, the minimum level to qualify for disaster relief through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In his declaration Friday, Obama said severe weather that began April 26 and continued throughout May battered North Country homes and businesses and wreaked havoc on infrastructure.

Bill Owens, the Democrat representing New York’s 23rd Congressional District, said he’s pleased with the federal declara-

tion.

“I continue to stand ready to help local leaders as we enter the next stage in the rebuilding process,” he said in an emailed statement.

Heavy rains and snowmelt in late April triggered flooding across northern New York. Floodwaters have receded here in the Tri-Lakes, but many communities along Lake Champlain are still struggling with high waters.

Firms to assess infrastructure flood damage

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees will hire two firms to complete the official assessment of flood damage to public infrastructure earlier this spring.

During the June 13 regular meeting, the board voted unanimously to hire AES Northeast and Barton & Loguidice to assess the damage caused by high waters in late April and early May. The village issued a request for proposals late last month in hopes of finding a firm that could estimate the cost of damages.

Village Manager John Sweeney said AES and Barton & Loguidice teamed up with their proposal and will cover assessment, as well as recommend a course of action for the village — especially as it pertains to either repairing or replacing infrastructure.

Sweeney said the village needs an engineer to do a more accurate analysis of flood dam-

age.

“We didn’t have an engineer here to establish a real dollar amount,” he said. “We relied upon Franklin County’s highway superintendent, John Hutchins, and his best estimate based upon what we knew at that point in time, remembering that the water levels were still at flood stage.”

“We were trying to submit something to both the state Office of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” Sweeney added. “They came in and did the public assessment side of it in reference to what the damages were that we estimated at that point in time.”

According to Sweeney, the two firms will also assist the village in its communications with emergency management officials.

Sweeney says flooding caused about $6 million in damage to village infrastructure in and around Saranac Lake. He’s particularly concerned with Hydro Point Park below the Lake Flower Dam, which he believes must be repaired before winter

sets in.

Elsewhere, high waters damaged the River Walk, retaining walls above and below the dam, the wastewater treatment plant, sewer lines, and at least two bridges.

Sweeney added that engineers have a better opportunity to assess flood damage now, because water levels have receded significantly.

“The hiring of the combination of B & L and AES, they teamed up on the submittal to do really what we thought were initially what our problems were,” he said. “They’re going to come back with a dollar amount.”

AES and Barton & Loguidice will be paid approximately $44,000 for their work. A third firm, Bernier Carr and Associates, submitted a proposal costing about $26,000.

But village Department of Public Works Superintendent Robert Martin notes that Bernier Carr left out at least two key items from their bid — those items would cost about $20,000, Martin says, bringing their total to about $46,000.

According to Sweeney, the vil-

lage will use contingency funds to pay for the engineering. But the village should be able to recoup nearly 88 percent of that cost through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Whatever dollar amount is that we end up having to outlay in terms of damaged sewer lines, collections lines, the River Walk, Hydro Point, scouring – anything we can find that’s public in nature, we’ll be able to directly attribute it to FEMA,” he said.

“Previously, it’s been 87.5 percent in terms of funding that comes back,” Sweeney added.

“The village will be responsible, generally, for 12.5 percent of the total cost.”

Late last week, President Barack Obama signed an order designating 21 counties in upstate New York as a federal disaster area.

That action makes federal funds available for repairing and replacing public infrastructure. Individual assistance for homeowners and businesses impacted by flooding may be available later this summer.

Baptist church to host free summer lunch program Lake Placid Community Lunch behind ‘gesture’

keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — A Christian group will begin offering free meals this summer at the Baptist Community Church in Lake Placid.

The Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees gave organizers of the Lake Placid Commu-

nity Lunch permission last week to use the village seal on their marketing materials.

Mayor Craig Randall called their gesture a “token contribution to an admirable undertaking for the community.”

Pat Jorgensen is a board member of the not-for-profit organization. She said the group needs donations of time and money to provide the free lunches every Wednesday, pointing out that it’s a good opportunity for students who need community service credit for schools.

Jorgensen said the lunches would be open to everyone, not just senior citizens. She said children and families could also belly up to a sumptuous offering of homemade meals.

She and other volunteers plan to cook all the food in the church kitchen, including dishes such as sloppy joes, goulash, Shepard’s pie and lasagna.

The same group has been providing a popular community lunch in Saranac Lake for more than six years.

News of the Week Margaret Street reopens PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsburgh has removed a temporary pipeline to alleviate flooding on Margaret Street.

Flood water levels were said to have dropped enough to remove the pipeline and reopen the street to its four lanes of traffic on the north end.

Stolen drug charges made SARANAC LAKE — Brittany Greathead, 25, Saranac Lake, was arrested on charges related to a prescription drug theft.

Village police state Greathead was arrested June 9 on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and numerous misdemeanor charges. Other charges include criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminal solicitation.

Greathead was arraigned in Village of Saranac Lake Court and remanded to Franklin County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bail bond.

Man hospitalized after crash ALTONA — Russell W. Chignon, 72, Plattsburgh, was taken to the hospital after a two-car accident on Military Turnpike June 8.

State police reported Chignon was operating a vehicle when it collided with another driven by Theodore J. Luck, 59, also of Plattsburgh.

Chignon was transported to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, for treatment and later released.

Vehicle exits road, crashes BEEKMANTOWN — Misty Ann Bashaw, 34, Morrisonville, was injured June 8 after reportedly losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a ditch on Rand Hill Road.

State police reported Bashaw was traveling southbound when her vehicle exited the south shoulder. She then reportedly swerved back into the road though ultimately ended up in a ditch.

Bashaw was transported to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh. She was treated and later released.

Forrence advances to NYC baseball competition NEW YORK CITY — Nate Forrence of Peru will compete in the Team Championship Competition at Citi Field this Saturday, June 18. Forrence moved on from the local Aquafina Pitch Hit and Run Competition held by the Clinton County Youth Bureau, Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department and SUNY Plattsburgh baseball team May 10.

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Chamber of Commerce has been awarded $90,000 in grant funding by the New York State Hazard Abatement Board to continue its Workplace Safety Training Programs for another year, running from August 2011 through July 2012. The award is $10,000 more than the current year, reflecting the growing participation levels by area employers.

Fire From page 1 one of the businesses in the plaza, and the building was fully engulfed in flames upon the arrival of first responders.

“Mike [LeBlanc, fire chief] was on scene probably two minutes after the call came in,” said Laramie. “What he found was a very heavily involved structure fire.”

The fire, said Laramie, appears to have originated in the back of the approximately 8,552-square-foot building in a “semi-enclosed area” behind the sports bar and a now vacant storefront which previously housed the Golden Dragon Chinese restaurant.

The fire spread from east to west, said Laramie, who noted a southerly wind added to what firefighters were up

against when battling the blaze, but not a significant amount. The fire consumed another vacant storefront and the law offices of Michael J. Phillips before it was contained.

“It went fairly fast,” Laramie said of the fire’s movement through the building. “We had a fairly large attic structure and that attic structure, though it had firewalls, the firewalls weren’t complete, so the fire spread very rapidly through the attic.

It was tough to cut off.”

No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the fire, with Laramie noting any occupants in the building escaped safely prior to crews arriving on scene.

Firefighters from the Rouses Point, Champlain, Mooers, Ellenburg Depot, Chazy and

West Chazy volunteer fire departments were on scene, aided by departments from Alburgh, Vt., and Lacolle and Saint-Paul in Quebec. Departments from Hemmingford and Isle La Motte were on standby.

Laramie characterized the condition of the building as having “major structural damage,” with all but a portion of the Sultan’s Sunoco convenience store, the section of building on the far west end, being decimated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Laramie said “it is suspicious” in nature.

Local high school teams wrap up successful 2010-11 seasons Baseball

QUEENSBURY — The Chazy Eagles rallied for a 2-2 tie in the second inning of their Class D state regional final against Section II’s Loudonville Christian June 7.

It was short-lived, however, as LCS scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more in fifth innings on their way to a 7-3 win, eliminating the last Section VII team in contention for a state title.

Ricky Osier drove in the first two runs of the game for the Eagles, while the Eagles scored their other run in the fourth.

Nathan Reynolds had two hits, including a double, while Kyle Bissonette and Austin Santor also had a pair of hits.

Tennis Boys Class B semifinals Beekmantown 3, Saranac 2

The Eagles swept the doubles matches as the teams of Charles Payson — Dilan Riley (3-and-1) and Spencer Keable — Willis ReidBreyette (4-and-5) helped lead Beekmantown to the upset of the second-seeded Chiefs June 6.

Eric Mitchell scored the lone win in singles for the Eagles, 6-0, 6-3, over Cody Bissonette.

Shawn Bissonette (5-and-4) and Dylan Christopherson (4-and-5) scored wins for the Chiefs.

PHS 3, NCCS 2

The Hornets knocked off the top-seeded Cougars to advance to the Section VII team championship game June 6.

Adam Emery and Alex Racine scored singles victories for the Hornets, with Emery earning a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory and Racine recording matching 6-4 set wins.

The duo of Chirag Patel and Chris Guay scored a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Ryan Marks scored a 6-3, 6-1 win in singles for the Cougars, while the duo of Bobby Marks and McKenna Hunter also won, 46, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Class B finals PHS 3, Beekmantown 2

A sweep in the doubles matches helped to earn the Hornets a Section VII championship, their second of the spring sports season, against the Eagles June 7.

The team of Shea Crockett - Danny O’Halloran scored a 4-and-1 win in the first doubles match, while Chirag Patel and Chris Guay won their match 3-and-3.

The Hornets other win came in the third ranked singles, where Alex Racine scored a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win.

For the Eagles, Mark Price earned a 2-and4 win while Eric mitchell won, 1-and-2.

Class C Seton Catholic 5, NAC 0

The Knights swept past the Bobcats to advance to the Section VII/Class C title game against Lake Placid June 6.

Jang Bin Park (0-and-2), Michael Richter (0-and-2) and Alvero Miguel (1-and-2) all scored straight-set wins in singles, while the doubles team of Tat-Tin Yeung — Carson Hynes scored a three set win (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) while the team of Joe Bridgeman — Elijah Beaudin won in straight sets (1-and-2).

Team Sectionals Girls semifinals NCCS 5, Saranac 0

The top-seeded Lady Cougars were the only higher-ranked team to score a win in the Section VII semifinals, sweeping the Lady Chiefs June 6.

All five positions for the Cougars won in straight sets, including singles wins for Alanna Cruz, Tori Duprey and Paige Southwick, along with the doubles teams of Kristen Langr — Erica Sorrell and Lacie Hogle — Allie Cartier.

Peru 3, Beekmantown 2

by Section VII champ Stephanie Omlin helped push the Lady Indians past the Lady Eagles June 6.

Georgie Knox and Natalia Smith won as the only two singles competitors for the Blue Bombers, and the team of Serena Hallowell and Grace Nardiello scored the clinching win as the Lady Blue Bombers earned the Class C team trophy.

Eva Zalis and Mallory Favereau scored a win in doubles for the Knights, who also earned a forfeit win in singles.

Mineville woman connects on rare multi-bearded tom

The long-long-longbeard was Brenda Sherman’s first

I

f Mineville resident Brenda Sherman tells you the length of the beard on the gobbler she shot this spring was 19 inches, you’re not hearing things.

That’s because Sherman’s tom — the first she’s ever shot — had not one, but three beards, a rarity found in only a very small population of the wild birds.

Because turkeys are scored cumulatively, all three beards — two at 7.5 inches and one at 4 inches — count toward the final tally, making Sherman’s longbeard a once-in-a-lifetime trophy.

Brenda’s husband Jimmer called the bird in for her during the early morning hours of May 7, after carefully placing three hen decoys along with a jake trailing behind in a small opening along a field. The couple then climbed into their ground blind to wait for shooting light.

“Around 5:15 a train went through and blew its whistle. To my surprise this tom gobbled on his roost about 150 yards away. I waited until it was pret-

ty light out and gave a couple of soft yelps and a few purrs just to let him know he had company, “ Jimmer said.

Sure enough, the tom came looking for love, but hungup about 80 yards out, before turning and slowly walking away from the Mossberg 835 ULTI-MAG Jimmer had given Brenda.

Jimmer knew he had to do something.

“I then took my chances and really made that old slate call make some noise,” Jimmer recalled. “He stopped, turned around and responded. I gave it to him again aggressively. He closed the distance by about 20 feet and gobbled again! I repeated the same aggressive calling and he started closing the distance by 20-30 feet each time.”

Jimmer turned to Brenda and told her to be ready. When the bird closed to 25 yards, Jimmer whispered “take him.”

“That old 12 gauge roared and wings started fluttering,” Jimmer said.

It wasn’t the first longbeard that fell

victim to Jimmer ’s Mossberg — both his sons harvested their first birds with it as well, the first a 21-pound brute with a paint brush beard for Travis and the second a double spurred 18pounder for Carl, also a rarity.

Brenda’s tom weighed 18 pounds and had 3/4-inch spurs.

While the Shermans were certainly successful during this spring’s turkey season, state biologists are predicting the weather-crossed season may produce a smaller than expected bag.

The state is still in the process of conducting surveys for harvest estimates, but by all accounts it most likely will not be as high as the 2010 harvest of 25,800 birds, and will be well below the 10-year average of about 34,000 birds.

Even more disturbing is the fact that soggy, flooded ground made for some of the poorest nesting conditions in years, which biologists fear will mean the number of poults per hen will be down dramatically, the effects of which may be felt for the next several seasons.

The 5-7 inch juvenile fish were released in deep water this year by 12 participating boats instead of from shore and docks in hopes that the mortality rate would be lower.
