PLATTSBURGH — It’s not every day you’ll find cats and dogs roaming the grounds of Curtis Lumber. However, that day will soon be here.

Curtis Lumber will host “Pet-APalooza” Saturday, June 19, at each of its 22 locations across New York and Vermont, including its Tom Miller Road store in Plattsburgh. Employees Paul Deyoe and Tanya Girardi, who are coordinating the event for the Plattsburgh store, said PetA-Palooza will be an opportunity for people to meet with representatives from the Adirondack Humane Society and Elmore SPCA, among other organizations, to learn about adopting animals. Curtis Lumber president and owner Jay Curtis and his wife, Kendra, hosted a similar event last year in the company’s Ballston Spa location which saw the adoption of more than 100 animals.

“Now, it’s something we’re having companywide, which just overjoys me,” said Girardi.

Curtis Lumber has teamed up with WTEN, the Capital District’s ABC affili-

ate, to sponsor the event, with the station paying up to $75 of all adoption fees for pets adopted as a result of the event.

“I’m sure that will be a good incentive,” said Adirondack Humane Society shelter manager Lillian Cassidy, who noted the amount covers the majority of the adoption fees charged for new pet owners.

Elmore SPCA executive director Kc Mace said an event such as PetA-Palooza will be a great benefit for alleviating the routinely high population each shelter sees.

“This will definitely help us because sometimes people see a picture of one of our animals in the paper and fall in love with it, only to meet it and find there’s no chemistry,” said Mace. “It’s really good that we can get these pets out in the public where people can see them to see if there is a connection.”

The companywide goal is to adopt out 250 pets, said Girardi, however she’s optimistic the majority could come from local shelters in the North Country.

“Maybe we’ll get lucky and have them all come from here,” laughed Girardi.

BEEKMANTOWN — Since January, eighth graders in the food and fitness class at Beekmantown Middle School have been learning the benefits of gardens.

However, the garden created by the students is not your typical vegetable or plant garden. It was created to be a wildlife habitat.

Web cams and privacy

H

arriton High School lies about 20 miles outside of Philadelphia in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Part of the Lower Merion School District, it is a relatively small high school with a relatively big problem on its hands.

Interestingly enough, Harriton issues laptop computers to some students for use at home. According to district spokesman Doug Young, those laptops started disappearing at an alarming rate, reportedly 42 laptops during a 14-month period. While that certainly is a problem, that’s not the big problem at Harriton.

The big problem started when school officials gave the nod to implement a lossprevention strategy. The strategy included the remote activation of Web cams on the laptops. Things went downhill very quickly for the Lower Merion School District.

One of the students issued a laptop, Blake Robbins, was disciplined last November by an assistant principal for a “behavior issue” at home. Come again. That’s correct; the assistant principal made the charge and then backed it up with a photo or two that allegedly, and secretly, was tak-

ccording to TopHealth, there are several dos and don’ts to healthy food shopping.

DO read nutrition labels.

Look for foods high in: protein, fiber, calcium, potassium, iron, folate and vitamins A and C and low in: saturated fat, trans fats, sodium and added sugars.

DON’T forget fiber ’s finest. Load up on whole grain breads, rolls and cereals as well as brown rice and dried or canned (rinsed) beans. When shopping, look for the word “whole” at the beginning of the ingredients list. The higher the fiber content, the better.

DO look for color. Select dark salad greens. Choose produce in a variety of colors. Remember, the darker the color of the fruit or vegetable, the higher the concentration of antioxidant vitamins and other nutrients.

DON’T dismiss frozen produce. Some frozen fruits and vegetables contain as many nutrients as fresh produce — sometimes more. Avoid items with sauces (they can be loaded with fat and/or sodium).

DO select frozen dinners carefully.

Choose meals that contain less than 10

grams of fat and less than 400 mg of sodium. Select ones that contain some fiber and have a large amount of vegetables.

DON’T pass up the pasta.

Try whole wheat pasta. It’s high in protein and contains B vitamins and iron.

DO avoid empty calorie beverages. Check labels to make sure you are getting 100 percent fruit juice, not sugary water. Check serving size and calorie content of beverages you’ll be surprised by how many calories some drinks contain.

DON’T go shopping on an empty stomach. Your stomach, instead of your head, will make your shopping decisions. You’re apt to be more impulsive, resulting in increased spending and poor choices. Bon Appétit!

The magic of fairy gardens Practice does make perfect

A

fter a recent trip to an area garden center, my two young children became fascinated with the idea of building a fairy garden. My children, like many of us, were excited about the idea miniature, magical people with wings lived among us and we could attract them to our garden. And, while I know the evidence that fairies exists is “slim to none,” I thought the idea of creating a garden for my children to play with and explore was magical enough to create a new garden.

Fairy gardens are basically miniature gardens with added touches that give the appearance of tiny creatures residing in the garden. Some people plant their fairy gardens in secluded areas, at the base of a tree, or even in a container. Then miniature decor is added to provide a feeling of magic. This can be a small fairy cottage, miniature furniture, gravel walking paths, or even a miniature water feature. Really, fairy garden ideas are only limited to your imagination.

Once you have decided on what kind of fairy garden you would like, you need to decide on the design of your fairy garden.

We chose to place the garden in a corner of the yard as opposed to using a container.

There are walking paths, a swimming pool (a large saucer from a pot), sweet fern shrubs for a deciduous forest, a juniper shrub pruned to look like an aged conifer tree, Irish moss, creeping thyme, and other miniature flowering ground covers. The next step for the garden is creating a fairy house.

We’ll use natural dried materials, such as grasses, moss, white birch bark, and twigs, to decorate the house.

However you decide to build your miniature fairy garden, whether it be a woodland fairy garden or a fairy garden of your own imagination, the important thing to remember is that fairy gardens are all about having fun. Get crazy, get silly, just keep it small and I guarantee any fairy (or child) visiting your garden will appreciate your efforts. I find my garden being used by race cars, dolls, and other toys.

And, each night we chat about whether or not the fairies are enjoying the garden as the children fall asleep.

his month’s article is solely on warmups and practice time. I cannot stress enough the benefits of exercises and duration of floor practice time. I have to discipline my practice time and especially warm-up time. These cover some of the first lessons for all my students.

One exercise is something you can do while watching TV or while you Twitter away on your PC. Alternate picking which is one down stroke and then one up stroke — back and forth, preferably while using a metronome or while tapping your foot if you do not have a metronome.

You will soon see there are a few different ways you can do this.

Exercise one is to alternate pick on the same string with no palm muting. If you do not know how to palm mute your strings, just gently rest your picking hands palm lightly on top of the strings and there you go! The harder you press, or more coverage of your strings, the more you mute the strings. If you are using a metronome and you are a beginner, start at around 80 BPM (beats per minute)and gradually work your way up.

Even at a low BPM you can work on your technique and tempo. Tempo ranges go anywhere from 40-60 BPM (Largo) all the way up to 200-208 BPMs (prestissimo), a la Ingwie

Now for the left hand you can try this: Index finger on the first fret of the 6th string (low E string). Next: Middle finger on 2nd fret 5th string; ring finger on 3rd fret 4th string and pinkie on 4th fret 3rd string.

Once you have picked the 3rd string, slide your pinkie up one fret and reverse, going from 3rd string to your 6th string.

Make sure you are getting a clean sound from each note.

You can make up your own exercises. What is important is that you practice, practice, practice.

Tip of the Month: Changing your strings every 6 to 8 weeks will make your playing time more enjoyable. There is nothing worse than strings that have lost there tone quality.

Wash your hands before playing — dirt and grease on your fingers will deaden your strings. Wipe your strings down after you play with a lint-free cloth — this will lengthen the life of your strings.

Bass may be popular, but not really a thing of beauty

T

here is a famous quote attributed to an old Montana flyfishing guide which goes something like: “Trout don’t live in no ugly places.” While trout waters almost always seem to possess a high degree of water clarity, scenic beauty and cool temperatures, the opposite holds true for bass.

Bass live and thrive in some of the ugliest waters known to man. When I think of bass waters, descriptive terms such as dark, murky, warm, weedy and nasty come to mind. After all, bass are a warm water species renowned for seeking structure.

Structure is an accepted euphemism for “lots of crap in the water to get snagged on.”

It’s bass crap, the old pilings, thick weeds, downed trees, roots and stumps, rocky shoals, cribbing or anything that has sunk to the bottom of a lake. Find it and you’ll likely find bass.

Bass remain the most popular game fish in the country, pursued by the common man.

They are also the most widely distributed fish species in the United States, which now shares the World Record for bass with Japan, of all places. Bass go hand in hand with Skoal,

Budweiser and NASCAR. In fact, I’ve been told that bass fishermen are really just offseason snowmobilers that couldn’t get tickets to NASCAR. We’re not talking about speckled beauties or iridescent rainbows that fall prey to tiny flies cast on delicate leaders and fine tippets. We’re talking about hogs, big ol' bucketmouthed, tackle bustin’ monsters with a bad attitude, dude!

Bass are the type of fish that require a baitcasting reel spooled with Razor Wire, attached to a rod so stiff it could be used for a pry bar in a pinch. Bass can be fished from shore with a simple minnow and a bobber or out of a sparkling bass boat that goes 75 mph and is decked out with a collection of angling gizmos that cost more than my house.

In the Adirondacks, bass are possibly the most overlooked of all our angling resources.

Bass inhabit more waters than trout, hey are easy to catch, great to fight and make a fine meal. They are simply a fun and entertaining species.

Although bass season doesn’t officially open until the third Saturday in June, in New York, the species can now be taken year ‘round, on a catch and release basis. And while there have been claims that taking bass

Bassin’s biggest mistakes Whether practicing catch and release or catch and eat, anglers should be aware of the most common mistakes of bass fishing. Possibly the most common error is an ill prepared fishing outfit.

Anglers should check rod guides for nicks and abrasions, oil the reel and set the drag properly as bass are one of the most unforgiving of all freshwater game fish and consistently challenge both the angler ’s skill and the quality of their equipment. Always start the new season by respooling with fresh line, and check the line’s expiration date before purchasing it.

Another common error is a lack of pa-

tience, casting and retrieving too fast. Remember, occasionally bass must to be coaxed into taking your bait, give them time. Give the lure or bait action. Bass are a major predator and must be induced to attack. If you aren’t getting strikes, change the retrieve, faster, slower, twitchy or steady, until you find out how they want it.

Stay in the game! Don’t let a lull in the action break your concentration. Fish hard from the beginning to the end, and don’t take a break while you still have a rod in your hand.

Fish like you mean it or go home!

Set the hook slow, but set it hard! Most anglers don’t realize that bass do not strike a lure fished below the surface in the same manner they take a lure on the surface. Below the surface, bass will approach a lure or worm and inhale it. They accomplish this by flaring their gills and suck in the offering along with nearly two gallons of water.

Bass don’t strike sub-surface; they inhale.

Anglers using rubber soft baits should recognize this behavior and lower their rod tip on the first indication of a take. A brief pause before setting the hook will almost always result in a hook-up, while an instant set usually takes the bait out of their mouth.

A University of Florida (UF) study, published in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society magazine, indicates otherwise.

“We found that in most cases, spawning area closures won’t improve bass populations,” explained co-author Mike Allen, a fisheries professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “If you lose some nests, the ones that are left have higher survival rates.”

The researchers also conceded that the practice of catch and release fishing might significantly reduce any negative impact of fishing off bass nests during the spawn.

Getting a head start on heart walk

By Katherine Clark Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — The American Heart Association is hoping to raise big dollars to combat heart disease and stroke — through the annual Start! Heart Walk.

On May 27, a kick-off party for the event brought teams together to share fundraising ideas. The goal for this year is to raise $165,000 for research — through sponsorship and community fundraising. To raise money, teams have been formed in the community and through local businesses.

“Our biggest contribution comes from the walkers from community teams,” said AHA executive director Ashley Edwards. “The heart and soul of the walk are the people who are walking for very personal reasons; people who walk for a friend or family member.”

AHA is working with corporate teams to help “create more healthy habits and lifestyles,” explained AHA senior regional director of communications Katherine McCarthy.

Julie Rowe, team captain for the Pfire Walkers, of Pfizer Inc., was the top walker during last year ’s event, raising more than $4,000.

“My father had died after complications of a heart condition, that’s why I got involved initially,” said Rowe. “The more I learned about the heart disease the more I got involved.”

Rowe, who teams up with her coworkers at Pfizer, explained with recent cutbacks in the company her team hasn’t been able to raise as much money as in previous years.

“It’s important to reach out to those individuals [who have] been affected by heart disease. Every little bit helps,” said Rowe. “Just because the economy is bad doesn’t mean there aren’t people who could still benefit from support.”

This year ’s event will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at the City of Plattsburgh’s Recreation Department, 52 U.S. Oval. It will include a 3-mile walk along Lake Champlain or an optional 1-mile walk, and several other events. There will also be a moving tribute to survivors of heart disease, who will be given a red cap to wear at the event.

Fat burning chicken curry with apple I have to admit, the first time I made this recipe I was a little bit skeptical because I wasn’t sure anyone would like curry. I was wrong. It was a huge hit with the entire family, even my 3-year-olds ate it up. Now, I always make a larger batch. This recipe may seem intimidating, but it is rather easy and simple to make especially if you have your chicken pre-cooked and ready to go. This meal is great on its own with a side of veggies or you can serve it over brown rice.

Ingredients: 4 cups chopped cooked chicken 2 tbs olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped peeled apple 1 16 oz can stewed tomatoes with their own juice 1 cup low sodium chicken broth 1 tsp lemon juice optional garnishes: toasted coconut, mandarin oranges, raisins

Directions:

· Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. · Add onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. · Add apple, tomatoes and their juice, broth, lemon juice, and curry powder. · Simmer, uncovered for 35 minutes. · Add chicken and heat through, about 5 minutes. · Serve with assorted garnishes on the side.

Local librarian begins new chapter of life

By Katherine Clark Special to Denton Publications MOOERS — After 12 years, Mooers Free Library director Edie Morelock heads into retirement.

Morelock, a native of New Jersey, moved to Mooers Forks 31 years ago to enjoy the country life, where she was a substitute special education teacher with the Northeastern Clinton Central School District and St. Mary’s Academy.

Twelve years ago, after the former director of the library passed away, Morelock was approached about taking over as director.

“I love to read, and I was able to see the kids again,” explained Morelock. “I really missed the kids.”

Throughout her career at the library, Morelock has seen many changes.

“I’ve seen technology grow to an important level within the library system,” she said. “When I came here, we

did not have public access computers and since I’ve been here we’ve gone through two sets of public access computers.”

Morelock added the library is the only place in town with wireless Inter-

net access, which brings in many patrons — one of her most favorite aspects of being the director of the library.

“There’s a lot of really great people that come into the library, especially in the summer,” she said, “coming through and stopping on their way somewhere else, to check e-mail.”

“I like people, and I like to meet new people, and working with the kids has really been a treat for me,” added Morelock.

As of June 1, Morelock has passed on the torch as director to Jackie Madison, a Beekmantown resident with a master ’s degree in library science from Emporia State in Kansas. “[I’d] like to get more young people involved and design more peer-to-peer programs,” said Madison, who has been working closely with Morelock in the transition.

Although Morelock has plans to spend retirement assisting her husband in his mechanic shop, she knows she’ll still feel like part of the library.

“I’ll be using the library and volunteering my time here,” she said. “[I] told Jackie I’d do some gardening out front. I think that will be a good thing.”

The Mooers Free Library will be holding an open house this Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m., which will double as a retirement party for Morelock.

A new kind of theater at NCCS Altona is looking for talent CHAMPLAIN — Whodunnit?

That’s what people will be asking themselves during the Northeastern Clinton Central School drama club’s murder/mystery theater.

For the second year in a row, the students decided to stray from the typical spring production for a different kind of theater, explained drama club teacher Jason Borrie.

This year ’s mystery theater, titled “Murder in the Della Manor,” will have people guessing who, why and with what weapon, until the very end.

“It centers around a book publishing company called Ward Books,” Borrie explained of the play. “There’s the patriarch of the company, Artemus. He is going to dinner at the Della Manor Restaurant and he winds up dead.”

Borrie said throughout the evening new characters come into play, including members of the audience.

“It’s a great experience,” he said. “Even if you’ve done a murder/mystery before, they’re never the same. And if you’ve never

Last year members of the fire department were looking to have a new type of entertainment, leading them to the Altona’s Got Talent contest.

“It just happened that my son and his friend up at the school in Ellenburg ran [a Northern Adirondack Central School] Idol,” explained organizer Lee Garrand, a member of the fire department. “Someone suggested doing something along that line.”

Basing their idea from the hit NBC show America’s Got Talent, last year brought out 15 contestants of various ages and skills.

“We had some music acts, some bands, we also had some dancers,” Garrand said. “It went very well.”

This year however, Garrand is hoping to see new types of talents.

This year ’s event will be slightly different than last year ’s, as there will be two categories. One for contestants age 15 and younger, and one for contestants age 16 and older.

Auditions for Altona’s Got Talent will be held at the fire department, this Sunday, June 13, beginning at 5 p.m. Only 10 people from each age group will be chosen to move on to the final round and perform during Old Home Days, Sunday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m.

Awards will be given out to first, second and third place acts, but everyone who participates will receive some kind of prize.

“It isn’t just the same old singing groups and stuff like that, which are fine,” Garrand said of the contest, “but we are looking for different kinds of acts throughout the North Country. There’s a lot of people who have all kinds of talent, but nobody really knows about it.”

done it, it’s a real great way to get people immersed in theater, because it’s not your traditional ‘Sit in a dark room and watch performances on stage.’ The actual performance happens right with the audience.”

The person to correctly solve the mystery will win the super-sleuth award of a gift certificate to a local business.

“There are several elements to solving it,” Borrie said. “You have to pick the motivation behind it ... you have to pick the weapon. You also have to pick if it was one person or multiple people. Who did what?”

“All of the clues come out throughout the course of the evening, but the audience has to put it together,” he added. “It’s actually quite difficult to solve. Each one of the scenes progresses you a little further in getting more and more clues. Some of the clues are very subtle.”

The evening will feature a four-course meal, including soup, salad, dessert, garlic bread sticks, choice of beverage and a choice of tomato meat sauce over penne pasta, or vegetarian lasagna.

Admission is $25 per person and reservations are required by calling 298-8638. Proceeds will benefit future productions by the drama club.

Babbie Rural and Farm Learning Museum opening

Cancer won’t keep this woman down

PERU — The Babbie Rural and Farm Learning Museum, 250 River Road, will officially open this Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m.

The museum will host a ribboncutting ceremony at 11 a.m. with honored guests U.S. Congressman William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh; state Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru; Clinton County Legislature chairman James R. Langley Jr., R-Area 7; and Peru Town Supervisor Peter G. Glushko.

The open house will include free stagecoach rides, antique machinery demonstrations, horses and miniature donkeys, and displays in several farm buildings.

Saranac artist Jack Stone, an experience mouth painter, will be among artists giving demonstrations.

SARANAC — Veronica Vann is usually on the other side of the equation when it comes to giving, helping raise money for those in need. This time, however, it was everyone else’s turn to help her.

Vann’s friends and family came together June 5 to host a benefit for her at American Legion Post 1618. Their mission was to raise money toward Vann’s medical expenses.

Vann was diagnosed with breast cancer last September and has been undergoing treatment for the disease.

“She’s helped with every benefit we’ve had and has always been one of the top ones to help,” said Jean Wilson, one of the event’s organizers.

Vann, a bus monitor with the Saranac Central School District, did not have insurance at the time she was diagnosed, and only recently was approved for Medicaid.

The benefit was held to raise money to cover the expenses Medicaid wouldn’t cover, explained Wilson.

“When this happened, we knew we just had to do this,” said Wilson.

Overcome with emotion when she arrived at the benefit, Vann smiled through her tears as she was greeted by person after person.

“It’s great to see everyone. It’s such a good turnout,” said Vann.

Wilson said she was also pleased with the support for the event — which included a spaghetti dinner, auction and raffles. Given her personality, Wilson said she wasn’t surprised.

“She’s very, very well-liked and she’s just dedicated to everybody,” Wilson said of Vann. “If something happens to somebody, she’s one of the first ones there to help. She’s very supportive. That’s why she’s so deserving of [the benefit].”

“I think it’s great,” added Vann’s godmother, Shirley Durnin. “Family friends, they’re there when you need them ... I’m her godmother and I’m proud of it.”

Vann recently completed her last round of chemotherapy and said her doctors are giving her a promising outlook.

“They think they got it all,” Vann said of the cancer, adding she will only need to take medication daily for the next five years.

What Vann and her friends credit most for her recovery is her positive attitude and in-

ability to let the disease keep her down.

“I’m always on the go. You’ve got to keep moving,” she said with a smile.

Bonnie Berry receives this year’s Elizabeth Heins award

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com ALTONA — Bonnie Berry of Plattsburgh has been named the recipient of the 2010 Elizabeth R. Heins Inspirational Survivorship Award.

Berry, a retired administrator from the Peru Central School District, was given the honor during annual Treasure Chests Soirée May 20 at the Rainbow and Banquet Hall.

Clinton County Legislator Sara E. Rowden, D-Area 4, was joined by event coordinator Elli Collins in presenting the award to Berry, crediting her for her work in the community to promote cancer awareness and raising money for cancer research.

Berry, a breast cancer survivor herself, is known for working with events like the annual Plattsburgh Relay for Life, Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure and the Treasure

Chests Soirée.

“Her real strengths are her ability to reach out to people, to share open and honestly, her personal story of breast cancer, to keep moving forward and never give up,” said Rowden.

Rowden’s words were echoed in letters nominating her for the award from friends like Gretchen “Libby” Goller of Champlain.

“Bonnie is always willing to share her story and to help anyone going through this journey of breast cancer survivorship,” Goller wrote.

“Her strength, courage, compassion and humor affects everyone she meets.

She is definitely filled with an enormous zest for life.”

Donna Eisele of Peru also credited Berry in her letter of nomination for being a member of The Boobie Sisters, a comedy troupe composed of local breast cancer survivors, bringing smiles to the faces of people the group entertains.

“[Bonnie] inspires many by her past actions, fight for life and living it now to the fullest,” wrote Eisele. “Elizabeth Heins would be proud to know a woman of Bonnie Berry’s dedication, involvement and character is selected for the award.”

Berry was visibly taken back when she took the stage, but joked with Rowden and Collins as she accepted the award.

“I’m not supposed to get my make up a mess before we get up here and sing,” Berry said, laughing with tears streaming down her cheeks. “It’s an honor to be here tonight as a survivor and also to join the ranks of those who been an inspiration to all. It’s just overwhelming.”

Berry now joins the list of past recipients of the award, which includes Gracelyn Murphy, Cindy Topnick, Marie Beemer, Libby Goller and Barb Nephew.

Adirondack Pride From page 1 “We wanted to keep it going again this year. We wanted to do something,” said Trombley.

Since President Barack Obama declared June National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month last year, events such as the Adirondack Pride Festival have become even more important to be held, said Trombley, as part of a continued effort to break down barriers and end discrimination in the LGBT community.

“Gay people are no different than anybody else,” said Trombley. “We have families, too. We go to work. We pay our taxes. We send our kids off to school.”

“We’re not as scary as some people make us out to be,” he added.

And, support for the Adirondack Pride is growing, said Trombley. In little more than a month, planning for the festival has taken off, with the committee getting a “good response” to requests for donations and financial support.

“We haven’t been able to get people as giving with us as they are with other organizations,” said Trombley. “But, what support we have gotten has been great. Especially

from groups like Colleges for Change, who’ve really helped a lot.”

Though Adirondack Pride had originally planned to host the festival in Plattsburgh, there was no venue available at the time, said Trombley. The management at Cocktails in Morrisonville, however, welcomed Adirondack Pride with open arms.

“They’ve been great,” said Trombley.

“And, we want people to know we will be able to shuttle them to the festival for a couple dollars to cover the cost of gas if they need a ride. If I can get enough people to tell me where they’re at ahead of time, we can even have central pick-up points.”

Doors will open this Sunday, June 13, at 12 p.m., with family-friendly activities, including a PRIDE Idol Contest featuring former American Idol contestant Nate Marshall, and a dance contest.

The family-friendly fun will end at 8 p.m., when “An Evening in Wonderland,” an adult-oriented cabaret, begins.

“That’s when it gets a little racy and when we have some

comedians that wouldn’t be appropriate for kids,” said Trombley. “It’ll be a wild show.”

There will be no charge for admission to the smokefree event. Proceeds from the 50/50 drawing and other donations will be benefit the AIDS Council of Northeastern New York and Elmore SPCA animal shelter in Peru, two organizations supported by the committee.

“We really want people to show up to show their support and raise some money for some good causes,” said Trombley.

Hospice’s Butterfly Release this Saturday

Ride for the Red Sunday

PLATTSBURGH — Hospice of the North Country will hold its 5th annual Memorial Butterfly Release Saturday, June 12, at Melissa L. Penfield Park on Boynton Avenue.

The event will be open to anyone wishing to celebrate the life of a loved one who has passed away or to anyone wishing to honor someone they know.

Approximately 120 Monarch butterflies will be released simultaneously. The Memorial Butterfly Release has been held in Plattsburgh since 2006 aimed at bringing together family members of Hospice patients and those wishing to celebrate a loved one.

Pre-purchasing butterflies is encouraged and should be done by Friday, June 4, however, butterflies may be purchased at the event based on availability. The cost is $15 per butterfly.

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Court will be offering a member training for Clinton County residents. The program is an opportunity for youth ages 13-18 to serve as members of a court for young people who have committed offenses in the community. The goal of the youth court is to prevent delinquency through positive peer influence.

The two-day training session will be held Tuesday, July 6, and Wednesday, July 7, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Enrollment is limited and deadline for registration is Monday, June 14.

Fire department open house this Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — The Great Adirondack Car Show, Craft Fair & Giant Garage Sale will be held Saturday, June 19, at the Crete Civic Center, 4 Beach Drive.

Registration for the car show will be held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., peer judging will be held from 12 p.m.-1:30 p.m. and awards will be held at 3:30 p.m. There will be cars, trucks and motorcycles. For every 10 cars paying at the admission gate one will win one free movie pass from Cumberland 12 Cinemas.

Turn old stuff into cash at the garage sale or participate in the craft fair. Either is $20 for those who register by Monday, June 14.

The day will also include pony rides, a petting zoo, an obstacle course, food and music.

Admission to the event is $3 per person, or $2 with an event card. Children age 12 and younger are admitted free.

KEESEVILLE — Keeseville Volunteer Fire Department, 8 Pleasant St., will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 12.

The event will feature live burns, vehicle extrications, fire prevention activities and demonstrations, and more. Car seat inspections and Safe Child IDs will be provided by the Essex County Sheriff's Office and a blood drive will be held from 12-3 p.m., sponsored by the North Country Regional Blood Center.
