Clinton Community College helping upward spiral

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When looking to the future of the North Country, John E. Jablonski finds great promise.

Jablonski, who serves as president of Clinton Community College, began taking a hard look at the region’s years ahead following a forum hosted last November by The Development Corporation, an organization focused on enhancing economic development. The “Vision 2040” forum, explained Jablonski, consisted of getting various members of the community together with one specific objective in mind — discussing the future of Clinton County.

“The idea was to take us out of the here and now, dealing with what’s occupying our time and energy, and think about the future,” said Jablonski.

The forum unveiled what Jablonski called “startling projections” that showed, if following today’s current demographic trends, the North Country could face a grim future.

“Based on current trends, in the year 2040, it’s believed the North Country would not be able to sustain itself,” said Jablonski, “simply because there won’t be enough people in the most productive years of their career to sustain the economy and the quality of life here.”

The trends, explained Jablonski, are based on lower birth rates being seen today, as well as the number of educated young people leaving the North Country for more metropolitan areas.

The latter of the two has come to be referred to as “brain drain,” said Jablonski, and is something he feels can be turned around, given a concerted effort of the community.

“We all really have a choice here,” said Jablonski. “We can accept what’s dealt to us and just go passively along or we can try to change the course to something that’s more desirable. If we do, what begins to happen then, is we begin an upward spiral.”

The key to turning the ship around, said Jablonski, rests with three main focuses — workforce development, economic development and increasing the quality of life in the region, which he refers to as community development. Having more and more highly-skilled workers — thanks to places like CV-Tec and institutions of higher learning such as Clinton Community College and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh — is something Jablonski feels will enhance economic development for the region.

“The segue from workforce development to economic devel-

opment is a very natural one,” said Jablonski, “because if we continue to demonstrate that we have a ready workforce, an educated workforce, a well-trained workforce especially in these areas of new and emerging technologies, we become, as a region, a more attractive place for companies like Bombardier, NovaBus, Schluter Systems, Georgia Pacific, Akrimax. The list goes on and on.”

The fact businesses such as those have already set up shop in the North Country is a promising sign, said Jablonski.

“That leads me to believe those companies saw something in the way of potential here,” he said.

Clinton Community College’s role in creating a brighter future for the region, he said, is to continue to do what it has done in its more than 40 years of existence — educating students.

“That’s what we do,” said Jablonski. “It’s what [SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher] has reffered to as ‘The Power of SUNY’ ... We educate students in degree and certificate programs many of those are highly-relevant to new and emerging technologies.”

The best part, said Jablonski, is that Clinton Community College is already well-known and well-respected for its role as a provider of higher education.

“We’re not starting from zero,” said Jablonski. “It’s not like we’re building a community college out of nothing. And, it’s not like we’re establishing a city or a town or a county or a region. We have a lot of things that are already resources, that if we use them well, can help us to create this brighter future.”

“We have no illusion that Clinton Community College is going to transform the community all on its own,” he added. “But, we can sure make a large contribution.”

Doing things the Spartan way Locals Medeiros, Dormann compete in grueling race

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com BURLINGTON, Vt. — On May 16, two runners from Saranac took part in a race which asks, “Are you tough enough?”

The Spartan Race, an international adventure racing series, according to their Web site, launched this year at the Catamount Outdoor Center and will extend across the country and into Canada and the United Kingdom.

Next year, the race will be brought into China, New Zealand and Australia.

The 5-kilometer race is far from a straight course. From throwing a spear, to crawling under barbed wire, to swimming across a 40meter pond, the race is meant to test endurance.

According to the Web site, www.spartanrace.com, the obstacles are inspired by Navy SEAL training, Spartan training, and American Gladiators.

“Being a steeple chaser and having done a lot of snowshoeing, this was the most grueling day of running I’ve ever gone through,” explained long-time runner and Saranac High School’s assistant track coach Matt Medeiros.

Medeiros first heard of the Spartan race three weeks beforehand from 16-year-old

David Dormann who runs long-distance on the school’s track team.

Dormann heard about the races from his father who is an Army recruiter.

“The Spartan race was actually set up by the Marines,” Medeiros explained.

Prior to the start of the race, participants did not know what to expect of the course, other than the few obstacles they could see at the starting line.

“You could see where they would shoot you with the fire hose, then the fire jump,” Medeiros said. “They shot us with the fire hose preemptively to jump over the fire.”

With 12 obstacles in one lap of the race, Dormann felt crossing the pond was the most difficult for him.

“It wasn’t that bit, it’s just that I had all these clothes on and they weighed me down a lot,” he explained, adding the race is definitely not for novice runners.

However, Medeiros felt it’s still worth giving a try.

“It breaks up the daily monotonous straight run,” he said. “It’s fun ... Definitely a good workout.”

Medeiros, who finished in the top 10 of the semi-finals was able to advance to the finals, where he placed first.

said. “I was able to do a lot of the obstacles a lot easier than people.”

At 6-foot 4-inches, Medeiros was able to get over two 9-foot walls easily as well as being able to walk further into the pond before having to swim.

His win landed him a Spartan helmet — one of the many elements making up the unique atmosphere of the race.

“They actually had a costume contest I was unaware of,” Medeiros said. “There was peo-

Microsoft Office turns 21 Older adults and Vitamin D

eleased in 1989, Microsoft Office turns 21 this year. Office started as a collection of three applications that quickly became the darling of many businesses, schools, and other organizations. It now is a complete suite of productivity tools available in a number of versions.

There are two interesting things occurring for the Office suite this year. First, an updated version with new bells and whistles will hit the shelves generating the usual interest. Secondly and perhaps much bigger, Microsoft will release a free on-line version of the software suite called Office Web Apps. Yes, I said free.

Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise to see an on-line version of Office. After all, the trend toward cloud computing is growing everywhere. The reasons are many but boil down to two main things — personal computers, relatively speaking, are very powerful which means they can easily handle the chore and Internet access is ubiquitous. Beyond that, many cell phones have matured into powerful handheld computer devices easily able to cloud-compute and the experts say with the success of Apple’s iPad

tablet computers may be poised to take off this year.

Why would Microsoft offer their flagship product for free? It could be they see the promise in cloud computing and want to step up efforts. Microsoft may also be responding to the pressure generated by Google as it strongly pushes Google Apps Premier Edition, which is a set of Web-based

New information from the International Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a daily dose of 800-1,000 IU per day of vitamin D for older adults, with some people in higher risk groups (obese, housebound with little sunlight, or with absorption problems) getting much more than that.

Older people are at greater risk of vitamin D deficiency, as the ability to produce vitamin D dwindles with age. In fact, vitamin D levels in elderly subjects have been found to be approximately 30 percent of the levels found in young adults.

It’s estimated more than 50 percent of adults over age 50 in the United States and Europe are at risk of vitamin D deficiency. A simple blood test will determine if you’re getting enough vitamin D; check with your doctor and follow his or her recommendation about how much vitamin D you need.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to the development of osteoporosis because it reduces calcium absorption. In older people, low vitamin D levels have been associated with an increased risk of falling. Higher vitamin D levels have been associated with stronger bones (greater bone mineral density).

Preliminary evidence suggests vitamin D may aid in cancer prevention by blocking cell growth and differentiation (cells mature and take on a specialized form and function).

Since the late 1980s, the risk of developing and dying from breast, prostate, ovarian, and other cancers has been found to be increased in geographic areas located at higher latitudes, where there’s less sun exposure, and with vitamin D deficiency.

The main source of vitamin D comes from exposure to the sun’s UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that we obtain vitamin D from foods and supplements rather than UV exposure, because of the risk of skin cancer.

Choosing those right berries Basket prices stay stable

I

f you are looking to save some money on your food bills, increase the amount and variety of fruits you and your family eat, or are just looking to add interest to your landscape, incorporating berries into your landscape makes simple sense. Berries are often easier to maintain that fruit trees, and almost every loves the fresh taste of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. One of the most sought after berries to plant seems to be the blueberry.

Unfortunately, blueberries are not for everyone. Blueberries need to grow in very acidic soil because they need high levels of iron, which is only available at lower pH levels. If you are looking for a berry bush that does well in average soil, consider trying the honeyberry or edible blue honeysuckle. This berry is a pale to dark, blue oblong fruit. The flavor is described as blueberry with black currant and black raspberry overtones. It seems the flavor is somewhat dependent on the level of polyphenols (antioxidants) and the soil types. They are certainly better well-ripened. The Russian types can be harvested all at one picking while the Japanese-area types tend to ripen over an extended time and are later by ten to fifteen days.

Honeyberries are very hardy. All they need is well-drained soil, a little protection from winds, and moderate rainfall. Cold hardiness is not an

issue and the flowers are known to survive at 19F. They require very little, if any, fertilizing.

They do require cross pollination so be sure you get two varieties. Some pair up better than others, so ask about this when you are purchasing plants. Both plants need pollen from another plant to be productive and set fruit. One of your plants may not have as good fruit since the pollinator varieties are sometimes chosen because their pollen works better on the good variety.

But fruit from both plants will be edible.

Since they bloom very early, as soon as the snow begins to recede and temperatures are constant at 5-8 degrees above freezing, the blooming pattern is already set. The flowers are insignificant so this is not an ornamental. The developing fruit will need protection from the birds. For most areas harvest will take place about six to eight weeks after the bloom is finished, making this berry one of the earliest ripening fruits we can grow in our area. Pest control is not an issue so general weed control will be the only real work while the fruit develops and on into the fall after harvest.

he 41 items in the Market Basket came in at $91.51 for April, down from $91.70 in March, and $93.08 last April.

Prices were down or the same from last month for most categories overall, with the exception of a 7 percent rise in produce prices and a 7 percent decrease in frozen foods prices since last month.

The cost of 10 pounds of round, white potatoes continues to go down and is a full 21 percent lower than April 2009.

The downward trend appears to be a correction from the high prices on this item last spring when there was a 66 percent increase from 2008.

In the meat department, prices were stable overall, but there was a 14 percent rise in the cost of center cut pork chops for the month. For the year, the overall cost for this category is up 5 percent.

Breads, cereals and grain prices were up 1 percent for the month due to rises on five pounds of sugar and one pound of River rice. The 18 ounce size of Kel-

County officials impressed by rehab facility

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com MENDHAM, N.J. — Kathleen, a bright eyed teenage girl stood up from her desk as she finished an English class Thursday.

Minutes earlier, she had discussed a composition assignment with her teacher.

Although resembling a prep-school student, Kathleen had a different background. Just eight months earlier, she was shooting heroin daily and snorting coke, and was ”on the run” from police — and when picked up on drug charges, she assaulted a police officer and kicked out his patrol car window.

Standing in Daytop Mendham adolescent substance abuse rehabilitation center, she talked of how her future now looks very promising, and how she looked forward to college and a career in psychology or social work. Her transformation, she said, was due to the Daytop program.

Town of Essex farmer Sandy Lewis, a retired Wall Street executive, is proposing to establish a similar program in Essex County. His preferred site is the former Essex County Home in Whallonsburg, not far from his organic farm operation.

Lewis is seeking community support for

such a facility, a necessary first step before the state will allow it to open — so he sponsored a trip for county officials to visit the rehab center in Mendham, N.J. May 20.

Kathleen was one of dozens of teens who made a big impression when Essex County officials visited the facility, watching classroom activities and participating in group sessions.

Lewis County Supervisor David Blades, a former state Trooper, said he was surprised with the courtesy, attentiveness and thoughtfulness that the teens demonstrated, particularly those who were reputed to be members of urban gangs.

Blades was also a school principal and BOCES administrator.

“All my preconceived notions about rehabilitation have been blown out of the water,” he told the teens. “I know you’re going to be very proud of what you’ve accomplished in life.”

Essex County Assistant District Attorney Brian Felton said he was impressed by how the former addicts took responsibility for their actions, whether it was the behavior in their past life, or now freely admitting to other behavior violations like littering, or snubbing others.

“It looks like the program is really making a difference in each of their lives,” he said. “Each teenager is in a different phase, and you can detect a marked difference — it’s very telling to the program’s success.”

He said he was surprised, as a prosecutor and county Drug Court facilitator, over their sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, openly talk about their own issues, and listen intently to both peers and adults.

“Their openness as to their past and their desire to change was amazing,” Felton said. “Despite what they’ve been through, they still have hopes and goals.”

Adirondack forest fires: a clear and present danger W

ith less than a one-tenth of an inch of rain fallen over the region in the past month, the dangers of a major forest fire are readily apparent. Currently, with no rain on the horizon, the Adirondack forests remain a tinderbox.

On the morning of Memorial Day, it appeared that fire had finally arrived, as a smoky haze covered the region and obscured the distant mountaintops.

Fortunately for the Adirondacks, the smoke and haze were delivered on winds hailing from Quebec, where 52 fires had already burned more than a quarter million acres.

According to news reports, the majority of the fires were burning near La Tuque, Quebec, about 150 miles northwest of Montreal.

It isn’t the first time Canadian fires have affected our weather. In 2002, smoke from fires in the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec darkened the sky over Ottawa and Montreal and the smoky haze was evident as far south as Washington, D.C. The history of forest fires in the Adirondacks is significant, and stretches back a century to the most devastating fires that occurred around the turn of the 20th century, when the fires of 1903 and 1908 consumed nearly a million acres of forested lands.

The Adirondack’s primary fire seasons have always been the spring and fall of the year, when there is an abundance of dry leaves, tinder and winds to fan a fire.

I can recall several instances of fighting fires as a teenager, when the pay was meager but the food was always good.

It always seemed that youngsters got the worse part of the job and were rarely assigned to the front lines.

Typically, we were used for “mop up detail,” which required raking over a burned area to check for coals or an underground fire. We discovered the hot spots by checking for heat with a bare hand, which always brought blisters. We would then dig up the forest duff, spray it with water from an Indian Tank strapped on our back and move on.

Firefighting has not advanced much since the 1970’s, as the same methods are applied today.

In 1903, a 72-day drought brought on forest fires that scorched more than 600,000 acres of Adirondack lands, centered near Lake Placid. At the time, fires also burned in Schroon Lake, Lake George, Olmstedville, Newcomb, Ausable Forks, Saranac Lake and Clintonville.

The NY Times reported at the time, an estimate of ground burned at more than 1,000,000 acres, or about one-fifth of the entire territory. The fires were so consuming that cinders were reported falling as far away as Albany, 150 miles to the south. Smoke from the fires eventually reached Washington, D.C. Five years later, in 1908, the Adirondacks experienced the most devastating fires to date as the blazes burned almost continuously for nearly four months across the Park.

By September 1908, both New York City and Quebec City to the north were blanketed in clouds of smoke from fires in Hamilton, Herkimer, St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Essex counties. The smoke was reportedly so thick, that ships were forced to use foghorns in NY Harbor.

By the end of the month, fires had consumed lands from Lake Lila east to Sabbatis and all the way to Horseshoe Station near Tupper Lake. Other fires burned from the vast Bay

The great fires of ’08 resulted in new laws to detect and prevent forest fires, that were enacted in 1909. To protect the forests, locomotives could only burn oil from April 15 through Oct. 31 to prevent the sparks that were responsible for so many fires. Loggers were required by law to limb everything left behind and new systems of fire surveillance included the construction of fire towers and state regulated fire patrolmen.

The new legislation also provided the governor with the power to close both public and private forests during times of high fire danger. Despite such efforts, by 1910, nearly one-third of the northern forests had been cut over or consumed by fire. Today less than 10 percent of the Adirondack forest is considered old growth.

Health Department hosting training to complete streets

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — In today’s world, roads are typically more vehicle-friendly than they are for cyclists and pedestrians.

However, Complete Streets is working to change that.

The Clinton County Health Department will be offering training Wednesday, June 23, on the Complete Streets plan for safer communities for pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to CCHD public information officer Laurie Williams, the health department began focusing on Complete Streets as a way of building a healthier community.

“We’re doing it by looking at permanent and sustainable change,” said Williams.

“Those permanent, sustainable changes are through policy changes, system changes, and built environment changes.”

Complete Streets is a part of the built environment change as it can add sidewalks, bike lanes, more crossing opportunities, bus lanes, bus shelters, and more.

“It provides additional opportunities for increased physical activity in our communities, broadening it out so that people and their families can use a roadway,” Williams explained. “Roadways are to be shared — by bikers, by pedestrians, by cars.”

tenance principles used in pedestrian and bicycle-friendly communities,” according to a brochure from Complete Streets. “Participants will also learn how to do a community assessment for walkability and bikeability.”

Although the training program, which is free of charge, is aimed toward local offi-

cials, planning board members and council members, Williams said others can attend as well.

“We certainly invite those to this training who have a real interest in biking and making our communities more walkable,” she said.

She also realizes it may be a burden for

some officials to do the training during the workweek.

“We understand that these are volunteers, but this is very important,” Williams said.

“This is an opportunity to be a part of a process in Clinton County to get residents healthier,” she added. “To help our residents to be healthier. The more people that learn about it, the more these concepts and these changes become part of the social norm.”

Williams also said by implementing the Complete Streets program, it won’t necessarily mean changes for all current streets.

“What it will do is it will set up our streets in future development to be usable and biker-friendly, pedestrian-friendly as well as vehicle-friendly,” she said.

“Some of the current streets can [be changed],” Williams added. “You have to do what’s reasonable and affordable in the community.”

The training program, will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at CCHD, 133 Margaret St., in the second floor meeting room.

Registration is required by next Friday, June 11. There will be another Complete Streets training program in Rouses Point, Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Scleroderma walk returns in memory of Randy Duprey

PLATTSBURGH — It was more than a year ago Alek Duprey’s father, Randy Duprey, succumbed to scleroderma, an autoimmune disease. And, though he’s only 2 years old, Alek knows there’s something special about Sunday, June 13.

“It’s dada’s walk,” he said.

The walk which Alek referred to is the second annual Scleroderma Walk in Memory of Randy Duprey. It was a year ago the first walk was held in Randy’s memory to raise money for The Scleroderma Foundation. The event, organized by Randy’s wife and Alek’s mother, Kate Duprey, raised nearly $15,000 for scleroderma research and raised awareness of the crippling disease.

“It’s a special day,” Duprey said of the event. “It raises money for the foundation and it’s a day Alek knows is to keep his father ’s memory alive.”

The basic formula for this year ’s event will remain the

same, said Duprey. In addition to the walk/run, the event will include a bake sale, face painting, a 50/50 drawing, and live entertainment.

“We’re going to have all the same things as last year, because it was so successful, I didn’t want to change much,” said Duprey. “We just added a bounce house for the kids.”

A silent auction will return this year, featuring tickets to a New York Mets game, a boy’s bicycle, gift certificates and gift baskets.

“The items are just rolling in,” said Duprey.

Participants will also receive a T-shirt and bag, with those raising $250 or more for the foundation receiving a fleece stadium blanket.

Duprey said she’d like to see as many participants or more this year. Last year ’s event saw 313 people walking for the cause.

“This year, we have on-line registration, and we’ve already got 39 people signed up,” said Duprey. “We have a Facebook page that has 178 confirmed

guests and another 319 maybe showing up.”

Whatever it takes to bring more people in and raise money for The Scleroderma Foundation, is what Duprey is willing to do, she said. Especially considering she recently learned scleroderma is now believed to be genetically linked in 1 in 100 cases.

“So, I have reason more than ever to find a cure for this disease,” Duprey said as she looked at her son. “I really hope we can do as well for the foundation this year, if not, better.

We just want to do the very best we can for them.”

The June 13 walk will again be held at the Beekmantown Town Hall Park, 571 Spellman Road, beginning with registration at 9 a.m., and the walk/run to begin at 10:15 a.m.

Jocelyn Frenyea finds a new home in ‘Big Sky Country’ Peru Central graduate helping children as Air Force medical technician

By Rich Lamance Special to Denton Publications MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. — The state of Montana, known as “Big Sky Country,” is home to rolling plains, few trees and the daughter of two North Country residents who has a job of protecting the U.S. in an area slightly larger than the state of Maryland.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jocelyn M. Frenyea — daughter of Michael and stepdaughter of Tina Frenyea, Peru, and daughter of Kathleen Frenyea, Plattsburgh — is a medical technician at this intercontinental ballistic missile base, one of only three remaining in the U.S. The 341st Missile Wing is one of the largest units in the Air Force, with 150 Minuteman III missiles spread out over 13,800 square miles within 15 missile alert facilities, and more than 4,000 military and civilians, making it the largest complex of its kind in the western hemisphere.

Frenyea is assigned to the 341st Medical Operations Squadron in the pediatrics section, with the responsibility of screening patients from seven days old

to 18 years old.

“I look for any abnormalities in vital signs, and find out why the patient is being seen,” said Frenyea, a 2008 graduate of Peru Central School. “I also triage urgent and acute needs for the providers.”

To support such a large operation requires help from just about every corner of the Air Force career specialties.

Everything from admin to chefs, missile crewman, missile alert officers, security forces, helicopter pilots and maintenance, communications, services, medical and dental — it all adds up to one of the biggest support operations in the military.

“My mission here is to help patients be seen by the provider when they need sports physicals, well child checks, or illnesses that need to be treated,” said Frenyea. “If I wasn’t here, then patients wouldn’t get what they needed from the providers and it would cause an inconvenience to military members and their dependents.”

For Frenyea and other airmen stationed there, Montana can be considered one of the best places to be stationed or one of the worst. Montana can

be a haven for the outdoorsman and traveler with major national parks like Glacier and Yellowstone just a few hours away. For others, being in an outof-the way place like Malmstrom, with no major metropolis or urban centers nearby, can make a tour seem isolated.

“I have only lived in Montana for two months, so I haven’t really seen much. I have been told that there are a lot of outdoor activities depending on the weather,” said Frenyea. “You can go hunting, fishing, hiking, sightseeing, whitewater rafting, or horseback riding.

“During my off time, I usually just study and go to the gym,” she said. “I have been to Billings so far and hopefully will explore the rest of Montana in the next couple of years that I will be here.”

Frenyea has been in the Air Force for almost a year. Malmstrom AFB is her first permanent duty station after attending technical school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Tx., and phase one training at Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, Calif.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com BURLINGTON, Vt. — Twenty years ago, the Vermont Air National Guard began honoring children who battle various illnesses and injuries. Two months ago, 8-year-old Jesse Blais was “surprised” to learn he was being honored.

Since he was 2 years old, Jesse, who lives in Chazy, has been making bimonthly visits to the Vermont Children’s Hospital.

“He has surgeries every two months on his vocal cords,” explained his mother, Jasmine Blais.

Susan Victory, the senior administrative coordinator at VCH, explained staff members at the hospi-

tal will nominate a child between the ages of 2 to 17 who face a medical challenge. Those who are nominated receive the Young Heroes Award by VTANG. “The Child Life staff that works with [Jesse] most of the time when he comes in really recognized him as someone who should be nominated for this,” Victory said.

On May 13, Lt. Col. Douglas Fink of the VTANG issued a citation to Jesse which states, “For his remarkable display of outstanding courage and valor while maintaining a battle against his illness. He has demonstrated that wars are not only waged by those in uniform.

During this difficult period, he demonstrated great strength,

courage, and a love for life in heroic proportions. Jesse’s distinctive accomplishments reflected great credit upon himself, his family, and his community.”

Jesse also received medal of honor and an officer ’s coin. He also had the chance to go with his family to the VTANG airbase, where he got to try a flying simulator and gun simulator.

“The airbase was a good experience for him,” Jasmine said.

Children at the VCH are nominated for the Young Heroes Award on a regular basis, with the goal to “pay tribute to the courage and dignity of real-life young heroes whose battle against disease or injury might otherwise go unrecognized.”

All The Pleasures And Benefits Of Gardening Eventually, all keen gardeners are asked the inevitable question: why spend so much time weeding, planting, digging and doing all those other backbreaking jobs? The answer is simple and hard to deny: gardening is an enjoyable pastime, good for our health and for our environment which, you have to admit, is in great need of our help these days.

Recent studies are conclusive; those who garden have better control of day-to-day stress which affects so many people nowadays. A Canadian researcher, who no doubt loves to play with words, has said that it isn’t just plants which grow in our gardens. There is also self-esteem, optimism, friendship, creativity, satisfaction, etc. This scientist could have added patience to the list, as well as the humility learnt from plants which take longer to give good results despite all our loving, tender care. On a physical level, gardening is also a great way of keeping in shape, on condition that we don’t insist on lifting and carrying objects which are too heavy for us.

It should also be mentioned that gardening helps us to communicate. Plant enthusiasts know how important it is to talk to other gardening fans in order to learn about new horticultural trends or to discover new tricks. You have to admit that gardening is an excellent pretext for opening doors of communication and expanding your circle of friends.

As far as the environment is concerned, there are numerous advantages to being a gardening fan. First of all, plants produce oxygen as well as absorbing carbon dioxide, a subject which preoccupies more and more of our politicians. Clearly, plants help to reduce atmospheric pollution by attracting, primarily to their leaves, dust, ashes, pollen and other particles circulating in the air. So it’s not surprising that many hospitals are now giving more importance to plants.

Another advantage to our environment concerns temperature control. The presence of plants helps to lower room temperature as well as helping to increase relative humidity levels and reduce heat in urban centers.

Various studies have also shown that plants help to reduce noise pollution. It is for this reason that municipalities will now often plant walls of vegetation in neighborhoods bordering main roads. It has been demonstrated that foliage one meter thick growing vertically blocks 8 to 10 decibels.

Another important point to make is that plants improve water quality. How do they do this? By slowing down surface water run off, plants allow the water to permeate the soil as well as helping to control flooding and fighting erosion, a phenomenon which has become an increasing reality over the last few years with the climate changes we are experiencing.

Finally, we must all recognize the fact that plants attract birds and other animal species. Encouraging plant life is one way of maintaining biological diversity, not forgetting the pleasure which derives from observing the spectacle of the many bird species in our gardens.

Perennials: So Simple To Grow!

It isn’t all that long ago that garden centers could only offer us a very limited choice in perennial plants; those plants which grow back every spring over a period of many years. Today, however, we have a huge range to choose from and every year dozens of new varieties are available to us.

Whether you are looking for perennials for sunny or shady corners, moist ground or sloping areas, garden centers will be able to supply all your needs in different sizes ranging from 10 cm to 2-liter pots. If you have the necessary budget, the larger size pots will allow your flower beds to bloom much sooner.

Unlike annual flowers, which must be planted every spring, perennials stay in the same spot for many years. This means that good planning is required before making any purchases. During the first years, it is better to have flower beds which are fairly empty rather than being obliged to eliminate certain plants during the second year because of overcrowding.

When the time comes to make your choices, think about limiting yourself in terms of colour. If you don’t do this your flower bed will give the impression of looking very much like a pizza! A new trend in gardening consists of creating contrasts with the foliage of your perennials. You should be aware of the fact that many perennials draw attention because of their foliage rather than their flowers. Two examples of this are the heuchera and the hosta.

When planting perennials, it is important to mix some good compost and fertilizer into the soil in order for the plant to establish itself quickly. To avoid disappointment, you should position all the pots on the flowerbed in such a way as to be able to visualize the layout of the plants. This is a simple way of distributing them according to height at maturity, color, etc.

Once this task is completed, the soil should be kept moist for several weeks in order to help the plants establish themselves in their new home.

You should also keep the flower bed free of weeds, removing them as they appear.

If you love tall perennials, such as delphiniums, it is important to support them with tutors so they will not be damaged on windy days.

As the gardening season is relatively short in most regions of Canada, not many gardeners like to cut back their plants in the springtime. So, because we are eager to see the first flowers in bloom, we hesitate to remove young shoots. However, gardeners should be aware that even though pinching the first shoots may delay flowering slightly, the number of flowers you will see blossoming on your plants will certainly make up for it. The pinching method entails holding the young shoot between the thumb and index finger and snapping it off just above a leaf.

NCCS graduates to be honored through faith service June 13

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Although the last two baccalaureate services for soon-tobe graduates of Northeastern Clinton Central School have not been well-attended, the Rev. Al Johnson is hoping for a change this year.

The third annual baccalaureate service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Sunday, June 13, at 3 p.m. The event is put together by the Northern Tier Ministries — a group of Catholic/Christian churches in Northeast Clinton County.

“The faith communities come together to honor and to help the graduates see how faith can be a benefit to them in their lives,” Johnson explained of the service.

Johnson said baccalaureate services began in 1432 at Oxford University.

“Baccalaureates are very prevalent in some areas, in some school districts,” he said. “Historically, they’re a great tie-in between higher education and any

church, not just the Christian church.”

One of the goals for the service is for the students to see people from various faiths join together.

“People of faith do work together and I think it’s important for the graduates to see that,” Johnson explained, “particularly in a smaller area where they’re not always going to be able to see a lot of diversity.”

At this year ’s service, Johnson is hoping the guest speaker will bring in more people to the service.

“The new Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese [of Ogdensburg] will be coming,” he said of the Most. Rev. Terry LaValley, a Mooers Forks native and past NCCS graduate. “We’re hoping that’s a draw. The area is predominately Roman Catholic.”

Aside from the graduates, their families and other members of the community are welcome to attend the event.

“It’s an open service,” Johnson said.

“It’s hopefully just an uplifting time to come together.”

Supplying the SPCA The Mooers Elementary School K Kids recently held a two week supply drive for the Elmore SPCA of Peru. The donated items were brought to the Northeastern Clinton Central Middle School to be included with their Builder’s Club supplies.

Golf Classic From page 1 When the tournament was created by Michael Mannix — former executive director of then the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties — the plan was to make it a fundraising event with celebrities.

“He thought that this would be something different by getting Olympians,” explained United Way administrative coordinator Kathy Snow. “It puts a different spin on it.”

Teams of three people sign up for the tournament and either an Olympian or a local celebrity will be the fourth player.

“It’s a fun event,” said Snow.

Registration for the day begins at 8 a.m., with tee off time at 10 a.m. However, there’s more to the day than just golf.

Players begin with a continental breakfast and end the day with a barbecue.

Throughout the day prizes are given out as well as trophies.

“They have money holes, the longest drive award, the closest to the pin,” Snow

explained. “There’s two trophies that are given out for first place net and first place gross.”

One of the trophies is in memory of Mannix, while the other is in memory of Jack Shea — a former Olympian.

“He was a double gold-medal winner speedskater in Lake Placid,” explained Snow.

The prizes and awards given throughout the day are to encourage people to join the tournament, which averages $12,000 in proceeds.

“It goes for a good cause,” Snow said.

“The whole proceeds goes to help the United Way and the partner agencies.”

National Trails Day events this Saturday ESSEX — Champlain Area Trails will participate in National Trails Day this Saturday, June 5, by hosting a morning hike and a late-afternoon celebration of the trail system it is developing that connects people with nature and links Champlain Valley communities.

“We are excited about participating in this day to honor hiking trails,” said Champlain Area Trails executive director Chris Maron. “So, we invite people to join us for a hike on the new Wildway Overlook Trail and to a wonderful event at Block House Farm in Essex featuring guest speaker Ellie Berger, author of ‘Stepping Out: A Tenderfoot’s Guide to the Principles, Practices, and Pleasures of Countryside Walking.’”

The Wildway Overlook Trail provides a relatively easy hike to a spectacular view of the Champlain Valley, Lake Champlain, and the “Split Rock Wildway” which is a wildlife corridor connecting habi-

tat along Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains. The two-hour hike is free and open to the public. It begins at 9:30 a.m. on Brookfield Road in Essex, about a quarter-mile south of Reynolds Road.

The afternoon’s celebratory event for Champlain Area Trails takes place from 4-6 p.m. at the historic Block House Farm just north of Essex. Guests will hear Berger ’s stories about the joys of hiking through the countryside and the benefits of an interconnected trail network. A reception follows her talk so people can converse, enjoy the view of Lake Champlain, look at the exhibits, trail maps, and photographs, and purchase limited edition prints that artist Steven Kellogg created for Champlain Area Trails.

Boating course set this weekend at mall PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will conduct “America’s Boating Course,” Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6, at the Lodge at Gander Mountain Sports at Champlain Centre, 60 Smithfield Blvd. The course will be approximately eight hours in length and run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

tion of State Boating Law Administrators and will satisfy the boating education requirements of both New York and Vermont as well as the Canadian federal requirements.
