Spencer Atkinson, and his nephew, Casey Myers, can be seen most evenings flying above the hills and valleys of the North Country, but they’re not in your everyday, ordinary aircraft. The two fly ultralight aircrafts known simply as “ultralights,” which Atkinson describes much like a hang glider with a motor and seating for up to two people.

“They are a blast,” said Atkinson.

Atkinson got into flying ultralights nearly 10 years ago, taking lessons before eventually flying solo. And, even though his first time flying the friendly skies by himself didn’t have the best outcome, he came back for more.

“The first time I tried it, I wrecked,” said Atkinson.

Atkinson had bought a new engine for his ultralight and it wasn’t more than five minutes after taking off that the engine quit.

“I had no place to land, so I had to land in the woods,” he recalled. “Find a fluffy tree, you know.”

It wasn’t long before Atkinson fixed his ultralight and took more lessons, focusing on what to do in the event his motor would give out again.

“And the thing is, with these, if the engine quits, you just find a spot where you can glide to the ground,” he said.

“When you’re flying in one of these, you’re flying lower and you get to see a lot more stuff,” said Myers. “There’s people living here 60 years that haven’t seen what we’ve seen. It’s nice.”

The two never fly their ultralights above 10,000 ft. because of Federal Aviation Administration regulations, but that’s okay with them.

“The views you get are amazing,” said Atkinson. “Even in Saranac, if you climb up a thousand or 2,000 feet, you can see Lake Champlain perfectly.”

Atkinson and Myers even enjoy the spectators they find along the way when they’re heard flying overhead.

“There’s usually somebody waving,” said Myers with a smile.

“No matter where we go,” laughed Atkinson.

Space shuttle scuttlebutt Fun for caregivers, seniors

I

still remember watching the many rocket launches while growing up. First there was Mercury and then Gemini, followed by Apollo and now the Space Shuttle program. That is, until later this year when the shuttle program comes to an end.

The space shuttle program is called the Space Transportation System; shuttle missions are referred to by their STS number. Shuttle missions have done many things from super-secret DOD missions to running groceries to the International Space Station.

These final missions are geared toward prepping the ISS for the end of the shuttle program when smaller vehicles from other nations take things over.

The current mission with Atlantis is designated STS-132. One of three remaining shuttles, Atlantis started service in 1985 and is flying its 32nd mission. The normal things will occur on this flight — spacewalks, letters from home, and space station astronaut pickup/drop off. Not scheduled to fly again, Atlantis will act as the standby vehicle for the final shuttle flight this fall.

I’ve never seen a launch up close but I

caught a number of liftoffs when I was stationed in Florida from 1985 to 1994. The most significant one was the Challenger in January, 1986. At that time I had just returned from a disassociated naval tour and was training for a new aircraft. I remember running outside to see the smoke plume and hearing co-workers describe it as they witnessed the disasBy Ron Poland ter unfold. We flew search and rescue flights for the next two weeks directing surface ships to spotted debris earning the Coast Guard Unit Commendation for our efforts.

aregivers often spend so much time and energy caring for their loved one’s physical needs that they may overlook their senior ’s need for fun, according to Lynn Howe of Caregiver.com. While it is understandable that most caregiving responsibilities focus on necessary tasks like medication management, personal care, nutrition, and finances, it can be equally important to inject some fun into the caregiving routine. Most homebound seniors would love a chance to get out of the house for a few hours without having to go to a medical appointment, and both caregiver and care receiver can benefit from an occasional deviation from the schedule. So, what can caregivers do to keep things fun?

For more ambulatory seniors, a trip to the grocery store can be a treat, especially if no one is in a hurry. The sights, sounds, and smells can be appealing all on their own. Have your senior pick out a bouquet from the floral department, or a fresh loaf of bread from the bakery.

Other ideas include: • Help your senior dress up in their favorite outfit and take their picture. Digital cameras are great for this — take as many

pictures as you like and load them onto the computer for easy viewing.

• Pull out an old photo album, and have the senior talk about what they see. Their memories may bring some pleasant surprises!

• How about a pedicure or manicure? Both can be done while the senior is sitting.

• Rent some favorite old movies — let the care receiver pick them.

• Have a sing-along, even if it worries the neighbors!

How to make a transplant last Red Cross work in Haiti

W

hile some of the more mountainous areas may still experience a frost, it is probably safe for most of us to plant our tender annuals and vegetables.

Besides waiting for the temperatures to warm up, there are a few simple steps we can do to help ensure a successful transplant. The first step is to harden off the plants. What this means is you have to get the plants used to the outdoor conditions a little at a time or the shock of the move from inside to outside could harm or even kill the plants. To harden the plants, you will have to bring them outside for about an hour the first day, a few hours the next day, and a little longer the next day and so on. Continue this for about a week. During this process, do not let the plants sit out in direct sun. They might get burned by the sun or dry out too much.

After hardening off the plants, pick a cool and cloudy day to transplant the plants into your garden. No matter what you are transplanting — a flower or a vegetable — the first step is to pick off all of the flowers and/or fruit. This will allow the plant to focus on creating a hardy root system. A large, robust root system will in turn mean more flowers and vegetables later in the season. After picking off any flower or fruit, the next step is to soak the plants with water. This

will help avoid shock.

For tomatoes, dig a hole deep enough to cover the entire root ball as well as a few inches of the stem. For peppers, the hole should be deep enough to cover the root ball as well as about one inch of the stem. For any other vegetable or flower, you want to plant the transplant at the same level it is in the pot.

Next, break up the root ball a bit. If the roots have been trained to grow in circles in the pot. You don’t want that in your garden.

Add a bit of water to the bottom of the hole and if you like a small amount of fertilizer. Too much fertilizer can kill the plant. Fill the hole with soil while holding the plant up straight. Pack the soil around the root ball and water thoroughly.

For the next few days, water the plants every day. The most important thing to remember when transplanting is to be very gentle with the plants to avoid shock. Drastic changes in temperature, moisture, or too much direct sun during the transplanting process can cause shock.

ince the earthquake, the American Red Cross has seen an outpouring of support from compassionate individuals, corporations and foundations throughout the United States.

The American Red Cross has received approximately $409 million (as of April 6) for Haiti relief and recovery efforts.

To date, approximately 50 percent of the money spent thus far has gone toward emergency relief, such as food and relief supplies; 39 percent has been for shelter; 5 percent has been dedicated for livelihood development; 5 percent for water and sanitation; and 1 percent for health. As the response progresses and recovery continues, the Red Cross will support these priority areas through its longer-term assistance initiatives until the last donated dollar is spent.

Effective management of our Haiti Assistance Program and honoring donor intent are the highest priorities for the American Red Cross. An average of 91 cents of every dollar received is invested directly into humanitarian

services and programs.

There are 30 Red Cross organizations and societies with more than 900 responders on the ground in Haiti providing assistance.

The global Red Cross has: • Handed out tarps, tents and shelter kits to nearly 373,000 people • Provided relief items for 400,000 people • Distributed 60 million liters of clean drinking water • Built more than 1,300 latrines • Treated more than 86,000 people at Red Cross hospitals or mobile clinics • Helped vaccinate more than 152,000 people against deadly disease • Coordinated the shipment of more than 2,100 units of blood to medical facilities in Haiti • Registered more than 28,400 people on its family linking Web site The Red Cross Corner is a monthly column provided by the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross. Can you tell me why my coupons expire?

E

ngaging in a discussion about expired coupons with an avid couponer is like opening a can of worms. Many shoppers believe they should be entitled to use coupons past the printed expiration dates.

Before we delve into that issue, there’s an important question to answer: Why do coupons expire at all?

Many years ago, coupons often had extremely long expiration dates — some even carried the proclamation, “No Expiration Date.” But, today’s coupons, on average, expire in 3-6 months. As with anything, there are exceptions. You may find a short-dated coupon that expires in six weeks or a long-dated one that’s good for nine months or more.

Why do coupons expire? Companies want us to use coupons to buy their products within a specified time frame. The coupon, whether found in the newspaper or on the Internet, is typically part of a promotional campaign that includes other forms of advertising, such as in-store signage and promotion, newspaper and magazine ads and TV spots all scheduled around the same time. This is especially true for new products. With a new product, the goal is often to get people to try the product quickly after the launch, so the company can determine if the product is likely to be successful.

For example, a detergent manufacturer recently released a new product for pre-treating laundry stains. There are similar products on the market, so the manufacturer needs to make an impression and entice shoppers to switch brands. I especially enjoy watching new products hit the market because marketers typically will offer much higher-value coupons when a product is first introduced than they will when the product has been on the market for awhile.

Convincing a shopper to try a new brand when there are already similar, proven products on store shelves is a big challenge. A high-value coupon is often the incentive a shopper needs to take a chance on a new product rather buying a tried-and-true brand. The manufacturer often will run multiple advertising campaigns to try to get shoppers to buy an

item during issued a coupon promotion.

The new stain pre-treatment product was priced at $3.74, comparable to the competition. But, its manufacturer issued $1.50 coupons as part of the launch campaign. That’s not bad. And a $1.50 coupon definitely has potential if the price of the item is further reduced with a sale.

A few weeks after I got the $1.50 coupon, my newspaper ran a full-page advertisement for the new laundry product. The ad encouraged shoppers buy the product at a specific store and included a $1.50 store coupon. This store allows shoppers to “stack” coupons, allowing shoppers to use one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon together on the same item. Stacking these two

By Jill Cataldo coupons would save me a total of $3 on this $3.74 item, over 75 percent savings! Time to buy. I happily took my bottle home for 74 cents.

This is a great example of a manufacturer using coupons to drive sales within a certain timeframe. The manufacturer coupon expired two months from when I received it and the store coupon expired five weeks from the day it appeared in the paper.

From the manufacturer ’s standpoint, my purchase was a sign of a successful marketing campaign. The coupons enticed me to try the new product, which I likely wouldn’t have bought unless it was a very good deal. The shorter expiration dates on the coupons ensured I would buy it within a specific time frame, key to the product’s successful launch.

Coupons helped the company boost sales in a short period of time.

Officials not happy with state’s decision to close off gated roadways

M

oose River Plains is a sprawling expanse of beautiful forests and sparkling waterways that unfolds like a vast tundra between the small Adirondack towns of Inlet on the west and Indian Lake on the east.

Connecting the two is a 40-mile stretch of dirt roads that is perhaps the most wild and scenic Adirondack roadway accessible to motor vehicles.

That is, until now.

The DEC — facing staggering cuts in the governor ’s proposed budget — has announced it will close the roads through Moose River Plains, as well as a handful of other roads leading into ponds, campsites and hiking trails.

The problem, they say, is a lack of funding to maintain and patrol the areas.

Gates across these roads will remain locked indefinitely — although the areas remain open to hikers, mountain bikers and horse-

back riders because of the wilderness classifications there.

Trout ponds stocked by the state in the area like Bear, Squaw, Lost, Helldiver, Icehouse and Mitchell will be all but cut off to the outside world.

Perhaps the most disturbing part of this decision, though, is the fact it slams the door on anyone except the most physically fit from utilizing these areas.

At the same time, officials of Inlet and Indian Lake say the decision will mean a significant financial blow as the thousands who utilize the area every year for hunting and fishing chose other locations to spend their cash.

Handicapped access has long been a tremendous problem in the Adirondacks, as was evidenced by the state losing a lawsuit over the issue a few years ago.

Under the terms of the suit, the state was required to increase handicapped accessibility, and one of the areas where they did so was Moose River Plains.

In the past two years, they have built more than a dozen handicapped-accessible fishing and camping sites there — all of which are now inaccessible to the handicapped.

At the same time, allowing the roadways to be open to the non-motoring public creates its

own problems, according to Indian Lake Supervisor Barry Hutchins.

“Our main concern aside from losing the tourism dollars is search and rescue,” Hutchins said, noting that local volunteers are often summoned to help lost or hurt individuals in Moose River Plains.

“Will we get a key to drive emergency vehicles in there, and if so, will the roads be passable with no maintenance,” he questioned.

Hutchins said he and his colleague, Inlet Supervisor John Frey, are so concerned about the loss of revenue to their towns and the precarious situation it puts them in for rescues that they offered to maintain the roads with their own highway crews.

They also offered to help the state patrol the area, or pay a portion of its patrol costs, but the DEC is standing firm on its decision.

“If it was a big money issue, I could understand,” Hutchins said. “But, this to me is a nobrainer. It would cost the state no money to open those gates.”

But, DEC officials disagree.

DEC spokesman David Winchell said in the past, two assistant forest rangers and one operations staff were assigned full-time to maintain and patrol the Moose River Plains corridor.

Winchell noted the assistant forest ranger

program has been eliminated in the 2010-11 state budget, and said regional operations staff has been significantly reduced.

“New York State, and therefore DEC, do not have a budget at this time. The budget extender bills do not include funds for non-personnel service. DEC has no fiscal year 2010 funding for work. These factors clearly underscore the fact that at this time DEC does not have the resources to maintain a high use areas such as the Moose River Plains Road System and the other roads that we announced will remain closed,” Winchell said.

Other roads that will remain closed include Lily Pond Road in Horicon; Jabe Pond Road in Hague; Gay Pond Road and Buttermilk Road Extension in Warrensburg and Dacy Clearing Road in Fort Ann. Warren County supervisors are also irate over the road closures, citing longtime visitors to the area arriving only to find their favorite camping locales inaccessible.

Winchell did say the DEC welcomes discussions with the affected municipalities in an effort to formulate a plan to open the gates.

That is welcome news to Hutchins and Frey, and the supervisors plan to take the state up on the offer by meeting with them in the near future.

In the meantime, Hutchins said he finds the state’s rationale to close the gates a tough pill to swallow.

“The bottom line is, I just don’t think they spend a lot of money in there,” Hutchins said.

Student council car show benefits fire department

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton Central School student council has raised $600 for three local fire departments.

On May 22, a car show was held at the school, bringing in 60 cars of various categories.

“It was the first time they’ve done this,” said student council advisor Janet McFetridge. “It came up early this year that we wanted to try something different.”

Along with the car show was a car wash, organized by the school’s drama club, and a food stand, organized by Reality Check.

“It was overall run by student council, but we wanted to involve other clubs, too,” said McFetridge.

The focus of the day, according to McFetridge, was to bring in a wide variety of students as well as community members, and to raise money for the Mooers, Champlain and Rouses Point fire departments.

“It was fantastic,” she said of the day. “It was better than we actually hoped for.”

The car show awarded 10 first place medals for categories including muscle car/hot rod, pre-1950, post 2000, dirtiest, most abused, motorcycles, and trucks.

There was also a trophy given to the best in show.

The show was judged by three local people, including Rolla Parker Sr., Dr. John Southwick, and Randy Poissant.

“We’re hoping that we can continue it,” McFetridge said. “We got really, really positive comments from the students and the community members.”

Annual garage sale June 4-6 to help Habitat for Humanity

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity’s annual garage sale is expected to not only have something for everyone, but also help families receive a home of their own.

CVHFH will hold the event from Friday, June 4, to Sunday, June 6, at the old Lake City Skate building, 102 Sharon Ave. “It’s a huge location,” said

CVHFH secretary Christina McDonald. “So, it gives us a lot of room to bring in a lot of items.”

CVHFH is currently accepting items from the community to be sold in the sale, with the majority of proceeds being utilized to build homes in the area.

Although they cannot accept clothing, shoes, computers, televisions, tires, air conditioners, or mattresses, McDonald said there are many other things they do collect.

“We pretty much accept everything under the sun,” she said. “We

collect everything.”

For those wishing to donate items for the sale, collection times are Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.; Saturdays from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Sundays from 1-5 p.m., at the garage sale location.

“They’re donating to a worthy cause,” said McDonald of those who bring in items. “They’re helping this organization to raise the funds to build a home for someone who needs it. Affordable housing.”

For those who attend the sale — which will be held June 4 and Satur-

day, June 5, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and June 6, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. — there won’t just be used items available.

McDonald explained many local businesses bring in items to be sold, including Champlain Valley Electric Supply Co., who has donated 15 pallets of lights.

However, CVHFH is still looking for more items to sell.

“We’re a little behind than what we normally do,” said McDonald.

CVHFH is also looking for volunteers to help out the day of the sale.

Thyme: An Alternative To The Traditional Lawn New and stricter laws concerning the use of herbicides for lawn care have encouraged many homeowners to look for alternatives. One of these consists of replacing your lawn with Thymus serpyllum (wild or creeping thyme)... on condition that the site is a sunny one. With thyme, you will create an ecofriendly lawn which requires no watering, no fertilization and... no mowing!

Contrary to popular belief, wild thyme can be walked on without causing much damage and has the advantage of spreading rapidly. Discovering The Dry Garden The dry garden is a little known feature in North American gardens. But the many arid gardens created in Japanese Zen temples are now a source of inspiration for North American landscapers who are introducing this garden composed entirely of plants requiring very little care. The dry garden is an original solution for limiting the use of water while encouraging meditation.

This type of garden is made up of plants coming from poor soils, shrubs and mulch. But mulch doesnʼt necessarily mean wood chips. In the dry garden, also called “karesansui”, you will only find mulch in the form of gravel, sand or pebbles. This type of coverage encourages good drainage and limits evaporation, creating humidity which allows the plants to survive without water.

At the heart of this garden is the dry river bed covered with light coloured gravel; no need to plant flowers and shrubs everywhere. It is sufficient to choose a few elements according to soil and climate criteria. However, this type of garden requires a thorough knowledge of botany in order to choose droughtresistant plants. A specialized landscaper can help you design your project and can give you advice when selecting plants adapted to your region.

Once you have planted your garden, a good watering will be necessary to allow the plants to develop roots. You should be aware that this Japanese garden will teach you patience: several years may be required before the plants develop good root systems. On a daily basis, weeding will be your major inconvenience as it will have to be done by hand.

Rouses Point stage benefit at 8-Ball Billiards on June 5

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Samuel de Champlain Center Stage Committee in Rouses Point is looking to the community to raise funds for four important parts of the stage, yet to be completed.

According to committee members Geri Favreau and Steve Merchant, although the stage is close to completion, there is still more to go.

“We’ve had wonderful sponsorship from civic organizations and from other businesses here,” said Favreau. “But, we still need to finish the staining, we need to build a handicapped ramp, we need a security door, which is very expensive, and hopefully someday we’d like to be able to put a dressing room out the back.”

The ramp and door alone are estimated around $6,000.

To raise money, a spaghetti dinner and horseshoe tournament at 8-Ball Billiards, 7202 State Route 9, will be held Saturday, June 5, beginning at 12 p.m.

The tournament is $10 per person, with trophies awarded to first, second and third place.

There will also be music by country singer Larry Ebere and Good Vibes DJ Nick Molinski.

All proceeds will benefit the stage.

“These days, with everything so expensive, people can come down [to the stage] for free and watch a nice performance,” said Merchant. “Bring your family down and just relax and enjoy.”

All shows at the stage throughout the summer will be free of charge. The first show will be with the Four Fathers, Thursday, June 17, at 7 p.m. For more information about the tournament, call 324-7665.
