Electronic waste drive Wednesday to help reduce, reuse, recycle

CHAMPLAIN — The village board of trustees will hold a special meeting at the village office, 1104 State Route 9 Monday, May 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting will be to approve year-end account transfers and any other business that may come before the board.

The meeting is open to the public.

Regular board meetings are held the second Monday of each month.

Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.

such as old computers, broken or worn out electrical devices or surplus electronic equipment, they’re faced with the decision as to what they should do with them, explained Dumas. And, the decision they make can be one that has a direct impact on the environment and the E-waste stream.

“The idea is to reduce, reuse and recycle, so we’re not manufacturing a lot of unneccessary new prod-

ucts,” said Dumas. “That saves energy and natural resources, creating less pollution. And, we’re also not sending our E-waste to other places like China or countries in Africa ... so, actually, it’s a global impact.”

As part of their education on energy conservation, said Dumas, the Scouts have welcomed guest speakers to their meetings such as Jay Letts from Total Computer Supply in Plattsburgh and

Janet McFetridge, a teacher at Northeastern Clinton Central School. Letts discussed E-waste and laws centered on recycling, explained Dumas, and McFetridge spoke about utilizing more recyclable materials and the harmful effects thing like plastic bags can have on the environment.

Richard Lewis set to retire as highway department head Credits co-workers for making job easy over the years

Richard “Dick” Lewis, superintendent of the town of Chazy Highway Department, will retire June 30 after more than 30 years as a town employee.

CHAZY — Richard “Dick” Lewis has enjoyed a long career with the town of Chazy, but now he’s moving on.

Lewis, who currently serves as the town highway superintendent, will retire June 30 from the position he’s held since 2006. However, his service with the town dates back much further than that.

“I started out as a town assessor,” recalled Lewis. “I ran for office back in 1979 and started in 1980.”

It was in that position that Lewis said he learned one thing.

“Everybody wasn’t always happy with their assessment,” he said, laughing. “And, some still aren’t.”

Though the job of placing a value on a taxpayer ’s property can be one that has the potential of causing friction between the assessor and townspeople, Lewis said he doesn’t recall ever having an issue with anyone over an assessment he gave.

“I really can’t complain,” Lewis said. “I’ve had a pretty good rapport with people in the town of Chazy. I never really had any knock down, drag out battles.

And, I think that’s because when I was an assessor I always tried to be fair and straight up with people.”

Eventually, Lewis decided to try his hand at overseeing the town highway department. In 2005, after retiring from his town assessor job, he ran for office — and won.

“It was a three-way race,” Lewis recalled. “I was a Republican running against a Democrat incumbent and an Independent. Luckily, I ended up with the win.”

Historical association looking for Civil War items PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Historical Association is currently planning a celebration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial.

As part of its preparations CCHA is seeking help from the community. If anyone is in possession of civil war memorabilia such as letters, photographs, belongings of Civil War veterans while commissioned, objects used in the home during the 1860s, and other related objects or documents of the time period, the CCHA asks one consider lending or donating them to the Museum for display in CCHA’s Civil War exhibits during the Sesquicentennial celebration.

Chamber needs to bring dinner back to Saranac Lake area

T

his is not taking your ball and going home with it. This is taking your ball and going over to the neighbor ’s house.

Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce board members have decided to hold their annual dinner on June 8 at the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort in Lake Placid.

This decision has many people — including Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau — up in arms, even suggesting that the move is related to the village’s plan to eliminate funding to the chamber gradually over the next three years.

In this case, the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is wrong. Yes, the word “Area” is in the title, but the emphasis is on “Saranac Lake.”

The home page of its website says “Welcome to Saranac Lake.” Should it

add, “But don’t come for dinner — Go to Lake Placid instead”?

On the chamber ’s website, 21 of the 30 listings for “Restaurant, food and beverage members” have a Saranac Lake address. Two have a Lake Placid address, and one of those is McDonald’s. That’s two-thirds of the sites listed by the chamber. Were all 21 of them booked for June 8?

The chamber defends its decision.

Argument No. 1: Chamber officials have said Lake Placid is okay because the dinner has been held outside of Saranac Lake in the past, using Hohmeyer's Lodge on Lake Clear as an example. However, Hohmeyer ’s is in the Saranac Lake area, not in the middle of the village of Lake Placid.

Argument No. 2: Chamber officials have said Lake Placid is okay because the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is a member. Using this logic, why not have the dinner at another member business, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino? That probably has the most to offer chamber members and has about as much to do with the Saranac Lake brand as the village of Lake Placid.

Get the point? It’s perception.

en Arrow is perceived as a Lake Placid business, and, despite hosting a Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner there, it will not be viewed any other way.

Also, while the chamber will not admit to it, the perception is that this move has everything to do with their recent clashes with the village. It’s the whole “looks like a duck ...” theory.

Even if the chamber ’s intentions are pure, recent events suggest otherwise.

This is not a move we would expect from a chamber of commerce that is run by some of the area’s top professionals, including the board of directors. This is a move that wreaks of bitterness and anger toward the village and, in part, the non-member businesses within the village.

In terms of the venom between the chamber and the village, neither is innocent. Saranac Lake Village Board members should think long and hard about any decision that takes funds away from an organization that promotes the municipality. In fact, the village of Saranac Lake, out of any of the other funding entities, should be the one that contributes the most to the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

We don’t buy the “double taxation” excuse offered by the village board, even though they’ve targeted other organizations. It’s perception. Eliminating the chamber ’s funding seems just as mean spirited as moving the chamber ’s annual meeting to Lake Placid.

And now the mayor has created his own chamber-like program to promote local businesses, Saranac Lake Inc. These two entities should be able to work together to promote the village and region and realize that the Saranac Lake area does not include the heart of Lake Placid. Both sides need to come to the table, sit down, and do the right thing for the businesses and residents of Saranac Lake — we can recommend 21 restaurants.

For now, we’ll settle for one step in the right direction; return the annual dinner to the Saranac Lake area.

It’s time to break out the mowers Making a gluten-free breakfast

I

t’s amazing how quickly lawns green up in the spring. Since our lawns are comprised of cool season grasses, it isn’t long between the time the grass greens and the time we are out mowing the lawn. With all the rain we have had recently, I have found myself having to mow twice this past week!

Since mowers have been sitting idle all winter, now is the time to do some simple maintenance. If you didn’t drain your oil in the fall, change the machine’s oil to prolong the life of the motor. Now is also a great time to sharpen your mower ’s blades. A sharp blade helps to keep the cut even and not frayed. When you do remove the blade from the mower, make sure that you remember how you took the blade off.

You’d be surprised at how easy it is put the blade back on upside down! I even made that mistake once. Blades can be sharpened at home, but it’s fairly inexpensive to take the blade to your local hardware store to get sharpened.

When cutting the grass, the correct height for cutting is 3 inches. There are several reasons why to cut your grass at this height.

Grass root length tends to mirror grass blade length. If we have a dry spell, the

longer grass will stay green longer without watering because the roots extend deeper into the soil.

Another reason to keep your grass longer is that a 3-inch grass height reduces the amount of mowing required. A general rule of thumb for cutting grass is to cut no more than onethird of the blade’s total height. This reduces stress on the plants, keeping them green, healthy, and diseasefree. If you cut your grass at 1 inch, you would need to mow again when your grass is 1 and one-third inches long. If the grass is cut to 3 inches, you can grow your grass to a height of 4.5 inches before needing to mow again.

Finally, research has shown that taller grass is better able to out compete weeds.

Fewer weeds in the lawn mean less weed killer needed and/or less time spent pulling weeds from the lawn!

n my last column, we talked about how many people are trying to go gluten-free in their daily diets as a way to avoid potential allergies. This week, we examine how to start out your day with a gluten-free breakfast.

Going gluten-free may leave you scrambling to replace some of your daily meals. The following recipe uses quinoa — sometimes referred to as a “super-grain.”

Quinoa is actually a seed related to beets, chard and spinach plants. It contains all eight essential amino acids and has the protein profile similar to that of milk. It has more calcium, iron and magnesium than whole wheat.

This recipe is inspired by a breakfast couscous I used to always order at one of my favorite cafés in Arizona. It is easy to make

Sunshine: being sure not to get too much of a good thing

PLATTSBURGH — With the advent of the warmer weather, Plattsburgh residents are increasingly baring more unprotected skin, to their own detriment.

The dangers of ultraviolet rays are publicly known, but individuals do not realize the severity of damaging exposure, noted Becky Rovers, an aesthetician with Adirondack Plastic Surgery Center.

“UV damage is every day, whether the sun is out or not,” noted Rovers. “Most people, especially in this area tend to only wear sunscreen when their going to the beach.”

However, daily sun protection is a must, emphasized Rovers.

“We tell people they should wear SPF 30 everyday,” she said.

Candy Pollard, a cosmetologist, and New York State aesthetic guild member from Zeina’s Salon, wholeheartedly agrees with Rovers.

“I always educate my clients as to the damages of the sun — the thing is just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean the sun isn’t there,” she said.

The damage incurred by UV rays encompasses “fine lines, wrinkles and brown spots” among other negative skin impacts, noted Rovers.

Richard Lutinski, a local family practice practitioner, corroborated Rovers sentiments.

“The skin also suffers other affects from the sun, such as

wrinkling and thinning. People who have sun exposure over a lifetime can have skin which appears leathery at an earlier age,” he affirmed.

Pollard echoed that certainty, noting the negative aesthetic impacts on one’s skin.

“Tanning ages — nobody wants to look older than their years,” she stressed.

Unfortunately, Rovers sees many instances of sun damage daily.

“We spend a lot of time doing lesion consults, many patients that come in have precancerous lesions,” acknowledged Rovers.

Lutinski is seeing a similar trend in his practice.

“We see a lot of precancerous and cancerous lesions, which all have to be removed surgically because they can spread,” he said.

Pollard noted that a battle against UV rays is often a losing one.

“We can’t do enough as far as the ozone is concerned,” she said.

The most important element of skin care is prevention and education, said Rovers.

“Eighty percent of the sun damage you get is before the age of 18,” she emphasized.

Consequently, Rovers said she is proud to participate in local school programs that educate youth concerning the impact of sun damage.

Pollard mirrors this educational effort for her own clients.

“As far as the sun, I always tell them that there are more chances of skin cancer, be-

cause these are all known facts that the ozone layer is depleting,” said Pollard.

Knowledge of the damages of the sun are becoming widespread. A trend Pollard is increasingly noticing in the beauty industry.

“The majority of the moisturizer, and even your liquid makeups have some sort of protection, an SPF anywhere from 12 to 25 in the product itself — which already tells you the retail market is doing something,” she said.

Moreover, Pollard predicts increased knowledge will lead to the demise of the tanning industry.

“In the next five years there will be no tanning booths, as they’re finding more and more problems,” she claimed.

The most important element of sun exposure for Pollard is protection.

“The trick to is not so much what you put on, it’s how you put it on,” she emphasized, “You constantly have to reapply.”

Despite the potential dangers of the sun, Lutinksi stressed the merits of sun exposure.

“Getting exposed to the sun is very important for vitamin D absorption. A vitamin D deficiency can actually put a person and an increased change at cancer,” he said.

According to Lutinki, minimal sun exposure is beneficial, and necessary for those living in the North Country.

“It all depends on the amount of exposure — going out in the sun for 15 to 20 minutes in the sun without protection is perfectly safe, and

might even be helpful,” said Lutinski.

This is a trend Lutinski notes particularly in the younger generation, which then manifests itself as damage “in middle-aged and older people.”

“You see it with the college kids, getting all the rays they can, and then two or three days later, their skin is red and peeling which is not healthy,” he said.

The tangible danger for

Lutinski is evidenced in those who ping-pong from very little exposure to large amounts.

“It’s the folks who don’t get any sun all week, and then lay in the sun all weekend — and if they do that without protection, their at risk — that’s very unhealthy,” he maintained.

Like anything, an overexposure to the sun can be dangerous, he added.

“Small doses of sunshine

are fine and helpful, but if you’re going to be out in the sun for more than 20 minutes — you over do it,” said Lutinski.

Pollard agreed.

“The sun is good in a sense, but like everything else, less is more,” she said.

Each warned people should consult a doctor before using any new skin products or exposing yourself to the sun.

Man admits to sexually abusing 3-year-old girl SARANAC — Aaron Martinez, 26, of Saranac, recently admitted to sexually abusing a then 3-year-old girl and recording the abuse with his video camera in May 2010, according to federal prosecutors.

Martinez has been indicted on 27 state charges and two federal charges, to one of which he recently pled guilty. According to federal prosecutors, Martinez faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release. Sentencing will take place in September.

Lumber Jills roller derby team host events May 21 PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Lumber Jills, Plattsburgh’s flat track roller derby team, will host two events this Saturday, May 21, at Gilligan’s Getaway, 7160 State Route 9.

The first will be a Zumbathon from 2 to 4 p.m. The Lumber Jills, in conjunction with local area Zumba instructors, invite the public to join skaters while local instructors fuse hypnotic Latin rhythms and easyto-follow moves to create a one-ofa-kind fitness program. Through competition, community service, and fundraising events like Zumbathon, the team dedicates their time to furthering the understanding of roller derby.

The cost of admission for the Zumbathon will be an $8 donation at the door.

That evening, the Lumber Jills will host “Ex-DRAG-aganza,” a drag show featuring the Haus of STARR with special guests Nae Nae Dominatrix Le Roe and Luna Vixxen. The event is scheduled to take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission will be $7 at the door.

The 19-year-old Clarkson University engineering student and Northeastern Clinton Central School graduate was recently named to the top 16 competitors in the Nissan GT Academy — a competition sponsored by Nissan and Sony that will give one virtual race car driver the chance to become an actual professional race car driver.

Rouses Point professor, students Student take new electric bike for a spin council

Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — State University of New York at Plattsburgh students teamed up with professor Ken Podolak to create an electric powered bicycle, as part of a green grant fund.

Podolak, a member of the university’s physics and engineering department and resident of the village of Rouses Point, serves as an advisor for the SUNY Plattsburgh Physics Club, which prompted the electrical bike project.

“Some students and myself at SUNY Plattsburgh got together,” said Podolak, “and thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could build a bike that was electrical, and ran on an electric battery.’”

According to Podolak, students took a preexisting bicycle and modified it to run on electrical power.

“We took a traditional street bike, and instead of the back wheel, it’s now a wheel with a motor on it, that has an electrical attachment to a lithium ion battery,” he explained.

To create the bicycle, students simply purchased an electric bike conversion kit known as an “E-BikeKit.” “So, it’s just one website where you pick and choose, and then you get it in the mail, and you can install it right on the back of your bicycle,” said Podolak, which is something “almost anyone can do.”

Although able to be operated

manually as a traditional bike, the electric bicycle can also be passively ridden.

“The principle of it basically is that if you engage the motor it will pedal for you — it will drive the bicycle and let it go,” explained Podolak.

Unlike a regenerative battery, the electrical bicycle requires three to five hours of charge from “dead to full,” noted Podolak.

However, the capabilities of the bicycle are impressive.

“From what we’ve tested so far, just on the battery alone you can go to around 25 miles per hour on the battery itself, with the motor and you can go almost 30 miles if you use a little bit of peddling, but mostly on the battery,” said Podolak.

For these qualities, Podolak touted the potential of using the bicycle for daily transportation.

“Another motivation obviously is the rise in gas costs; it’s expensive to commute. Having something like this electric bike is a good alternative for commuting, for people to consider as far as transportation modes,” emphasized Podolak.

Podolak also noted the merits of the bicycle in terms of navigating terrain.

“If a hill comes, chances are I’m walking it. With this thing, you can put the motor on, and pedal on the flat parts and downhill,” he said.

Additionally, Podolak also stressed that the electric bike is “fairly cost effective.”

“If you have the bicycle it costs like $600 to $1,000. But if you think about the cost of gasoline, and how much you use the bike going back and forth to work, it’ll pay for itself,” emphasized Podolak.

The project is important in terms of its ecological impact, said Podolak.

“It’s a nice healthy alternative to gas consumption of other vehicles,” he said. “It’s just a cool way to get around from A to B.”

Sales tax beats expectations, county officials say

BEEKMANTOWN — Towns and villages in Clinton County are significantly ahead of projected sales tax revenue, according to County Legislator E. Tom Sears, R-Area 3, who spoke from the audience at the Beekmantown town council meeting May 16.

Clinton County finance manager Greg Bell said towns and villages in the county were $259,563.25 ahead of projected sales tax revenue through April. Projections had placed revenues through April at $3,162,125, though in reality they amounted to $3,421,688.25. There was $409,289.16

more actual revenue through April this year than there was in 2010.

Bell was unsure to what to attribute the increase. Still, he said an increase in visitors, largely from Canada, likely played a part.

In other regular business: • The town is looking for cheaper contract quotes to light the town hall building using more energy-efficient technology. According to Town Supervisor Dennis Relation, the town had found an attractive quote but the contractor offering it had not used prevailing wage rates in the calculation. When the contractor did so, the quote nearly doubled.

As a result, Relation said he was investigating whether other contractors might offer cheaper quotes. New York State Electric and

Gas provides 70 percent reimbursement for this type of remodeling, according to Relation. Additionally, he said, new technology would save the town money and actually offer better lighting.

• Discussion of purchasing a new pickup truck for the highway department was tabled until the next meeting, since the highway superintendent, Roger Perry, was not present. Councilperson Sydney Sue Garrant, among others, had questions regarding the purchase, such as why the desired truck would run on diesel as opposed to gasoline.

The board’s next regularly scheduled meeting Monday, June 20, at 7 p.m.

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton Central School student council is doing it again.

This year ’s student council will host a car show this Saturday, May 21, in the front parking lot of the high school on State Route 276.

“This will be our second one,” said student council advisor Janet McFetridge. “Our goal again this year is to draw members of the community as well as a wide variety of students.”

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature seven categories in which vehicle owners may classify their entries — Muscle/Hot Rod, Pre1950, Post 2000, Dirtiest, Most Abused, Motorcycle, and Truck.

“Last year, we had about 40 cars.

So, this year, we’re hoping it’s going to be even bigger and better,” said McFetridge.

And, that goes for the money the council wants to raise, too, said McFetridge. The first annual car show raised enough in registration fees and concessions sales to provide $200 donations each to the Champlain, Rouses Point, and Mooers volunteer fire departments. The council is currently in the process of deciding what charitable goal it will have this year.

This Saturday’s event will include a bike safety rodeo for kids, said McFetridge, adding to what the event will offer.

“We’ll be setting that up in the back parking lot,” she said. “We’re inviting children to bring their bikes and ride the course, learning about safety.”

“We’re just hoping the weather cooperates,” she added.

Admission to this Saturday’s event will be free. The cost to register a vehicle will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.

In addition to concessions, the car show will include raffles and 50/50 drawings.

The process to get the garden off the ground — or, more to the point, in it — has been relatively easy, said Soluri. The village board has already identified the location, at the end of Church Street along the bank of the Great Chazy River. The next step was to get the necessary materials to develop the garden, which Martin said didn’t take long at all.

“We had fertilizer donated by Larry Sorrell and had some help from Charp Rental,” said Martin. “We’re having topsoil brought in and getting volunteers to help with tilling ... So far, it’s been a community effort.”

The word “community” is a theme that will run deep with the community garden, too, Soluri said. The idea will be for residents to volunteer time

“I think that’s a really good idea and give an incentive something to look forward to,” Soluri said.

“The idea will be to share the crops — where everyone will be able to throw in tomatoes, carrots, whatever — and find a kitchen to use to make the meal,” Martin said. “It’s a great idea. I hope there’s a good response.”

The village board will hold an organization meeting for the community garden this Tuesday, May 24, at the village office, 1104 State Route 9.

Those interested in participating in the development of the garden are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.

String band to bring sounds to Northern Adirondack Wednesday ELLENBURG DEPOT — The Canal Street String Band will perform at Northern Adirondack Central School, 5586 U.S. Route 11, this Wednesday, May 25. The performance will be held in the Norman C. Kavanaugh Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m.

The Canal Street String Band formed in Buffalo in the summer of 2010, playing “fiddle tunes, sea shanties, cowboy songs, canal ditties, mountain music, western swing, and originals” featuring the sounds of the banjo, fiddle, twin mandolins, dobro, string bass, guitar, octave mandolin and three-part harmonies.

Phil Banaszak — a New York State fiddle champion and member of the North American

Fiddlers Hall of Fame — plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar, and sings. Dave Ruch — a full-time musician/performer/music researcher/teaching artist — sings and plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, octave mandolin, bones, spoons and the jaw harp, among other instruments. Jim Whitford — a Buffalo Music Hall of Famer and sideman to stars like Peter Case, Tarbox Ramblers, Gurf Morlix, and Linda McRae — rocks the string bass as well as playing dobro and guitar and singing.

The cost of general admission at the door will be $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

“I’ve put it on the back burner for awhile, and I had to make a decision to either keep my job with the highway department or focus on my business,” explained Lewis.

“And, I’ve had my business since 1973. I didn’t want to let it go.”

“When I started with the highway department, we were able to drop some positions to save money,” Lewis said. “We were also able to find ways to cut down on the amount of fuel we used, saving us quite a bit of money.”

The feather in the cap of Lewis’ tenure, he said, was the recent receipt of a $339,000 state grant for the construction of a sand and salt storage facility. The structure, which is in the process of being engineered, is something Lewis and other town officials had been lobbying for several years to get.

“We had help from Melissa McManus for the gr nt writing process, and later help from Adele Douglas. If we didn’t get the grant, I don’t know how long it would’ve taken to build [the storage facility],” said Lewis.

Through “a really good crew” at the highway department and good working relationships with organizations like the local fire and emergency medical service departments, Lewis said his job was made much easier.

“That’s important,” Lewis said. “They all deserve a good ‘Atta boy.’”

Town Supervisor Staub G. Spiegel commended a humble Lewis, saying he’s sorry

“Dick has always been fantastic at his job, in both positions he’s had with the town,” Spiegel said. “He’s had a great attention to detail and helped save the town a lot of money. I can’t think of a better person who could have run his department this whole time.”

The town will, however, now look to fill Lewis’ shoes. Deputy highway superintendent Tim Lamica is expected to temporarily take over for Lewis upon his retirement. The position of highway superintendent — Lewis’ unexpired term that ends in 2013 — will be put on the ballot for the November election.

And, one way the Scouts have decided they can help is by hosting an electronic waste drive, collecting old electronics, computers, televisions and even batteries to be recycled. The event — to be held Wednesday, May 25 — is one Scouts like Aislyn McDonough and Tabitha Parent feel will help make a difference.

“If they just throw all their electronic waste out, it might go into the ground and ruin the soil,” said McDonough. “So, if the farmers try to grow crops, it’ll take the nutrition out of the crops and could make people sick.”

“Reducing, reusing and recycling waste is good for the land because if you put it in the landfill, the chemicals will go into the land and pollute the groundwater and the water you use to drink,” said Parent.

Samantha Disco, also a member of the local Junior Girl Scout Troop, said reducing what’s in the earth’s waste stream can also help recycling efforts.

“If they were just going to throw [old electronic equipment] out, it’d just be a waste,” she said. “But, if they recycle it, [the waste] could be made into something useful.”

Come-from-behind wins the theme of week in high school baseball NCCS 5, Saranac 4 The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Chiefs, 54, May 10.

Steven Carder connected for a two-run double as part of the decisive inning, while Jamie Davison had two hits and picked up the save on the mound.

Brandon Spooner also had two hits for the Cougars, while Dalton Castine fanned five batters to earn the win.

Dylan Everleth had three hits, including two triples, while Jordan Gillespie had two hits including a double.

PHS 4, Saranac Lake 2 Timmy Curran drove home two with a double in the sixth inning as the Hornets got past the Red Storm May 10.

Curran also hit a double earlier in the game, while Anthony Porcelli hit a solo home run and Brian Latulipe also had a double.

Robbie Knowles got the win in relief for the Hornets, while Porcelli pitched the seventh inning for the save.

Chris Dorman had a double for the Red Storm, while Tyler O’Neil worked six innings on the mound in the loss.

Maxine Rock won four times for the Lady Chiefs, with Lexi Blockson, Alex Farrington, Ellen Thew, Tricia Helms, Alexis Bruno and Sabrina Bruno winning twice.

Plattsburgh 92, Seton Catholic 35 Plattsburgh 88, Seton Catholic 31 Justin Curtis swept through the jumping events, including a school record in the triple jump, while also earning a win in the 110 hurdles to help the Hornets past the Knights May 12.

Andrew Favro, Jordan Knight and Jordan Barriere all scored two wins for the Hornets, while Zach Ziemer scored three wins for the Knights and Mitchell Ryan won the 1,600.

Bicycle road races set in Lake Placid and Wilmington LAKE PLACID — Team Placid Planet will host the fourth Annual Wilmington-Whiteface Road Race on Saturday, June 11, and the third Annual Saranac Lake Downtown Criterium (NYS Criterium Championships) on Sunday, June 12. Both races are sanctioned by USA Cycling, the national cycling sanctioning body, and provide opportunities for men, women, and youth of a variety of experience levels as well as first-time racers to participate.

The Wilmington-Whiteface Road Race starts at the Wilmington Town Park and takes Bonnie View Road to a 13.7-mile loop on back roads in the town of Black Brook before returning to Wilmington and finishing 1.6 miles up

Whiteface Mountain to the Santa’s Workshop entrance. Race distances range from 12 miles for 10 to 14-year-olds, to 27 miles for first-time adult female, 41 miles for first-time adult male racers, 54 miles for experienced male and female racers, and 82 miles for elite male racers.

The course features excellent pavement, scenic views, rolling to hilly terrain, and a challenging finishing climb.

The Saranac Lake Downtown Criterium is a multi-lap event designed to be spectator friendly. The course is a three-turn .55 mile counterclockwise loop around Main Street, Broadway, Dorsey St, and Rt 3: fast yet safe, technical, and exciting to watch.

More than $4,600 in cash and merchandise prizes, medals and trophies will be awarded.

A portion of the proceeds from the race will be donated to local charities in Wilmington and Saranac Lake. Both of these communities are most gracious hosts for the races, and the organizers and the club are very grateful for this.

Lady Hornets pile up the wins in very busy week for softball teams Peru 14, Ticonderoga 13, (9) The Lady Indians rallied from the threerun deficit to force extra innings and Breanna Martineau drove in the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth to get past the Lady Sentinels May 10.

Martineau drove in a pair of runs in the top half of the ninth, and the Indians were able to thwart a Sentinel comeback.

Taylor Rock had four hits with a triple.

Brianna Padron had three hits, including a double.

Dani Dayton pitched all nine innings in the win.

Saranac Lake 3, Saranac 2 Saranac Lake 7, Saranac 4 Chelsea Lafountain connected on the walk-off hit in the first game, and added two more runs batted in the second game as the Lady Red Storm swept past the Lady Chiefs May 10.

Megan Moody had three hits tallied three hits in the opener for the Red Storm, while Jordy McDougall drove in one run and recorded the win on the mound.

In game two, Nicole Viscardo struck out three in four innings of relief to earn the win, while adding a double, two singles and driving in two at the plate.

Olivia Furnia had a double in each end of the twin-bill, while Ashley Terry doubled and drove in one in the first game and the duo of Alisha Ducatte and Jade Lakers doubled in the second.

Keeseville park to get facelift with Saturday renovation activity

keith@denpubs.com KEESEVILLE — As nature renews itself in the spring, residents of Keeseville will have the chance to help renew J.C. Park.

The site of the village of Keeseville athletic fields will also be the site of a cleanup and renovation project that will take place this Saturday, May 21, starting at around 9 a.m.

The event will help renovate the fields

a n d p a r k a re a , a c c o rd i n g t o K e e s e v i l l e mayor Meegan Rock.

“The event will be with the youth commission and we have plenty of paint and about 38 tons of red clay that will be coming,” Rock said.

The clay will be used to restore the infield to one of the baseball/softball fields at the park, while the paint will be used t o f re s h e n u p t h e l o o k o f t h e p a v i l i o n area.

“This is a project that involves the vil-

lage of Keeseville and the towns of Chesterfield and Au Sable,” Rock said.

“Chesterfield is putting in a new parking area for the park complex and Au Sable is e x c a v a t i n g t h e a re a f o r a n e w c o n c re t e slab that will be part of the skate park. We are all working together to help renovate the park for the community.”

Rock said that the current skate park, located in the pavilion area, will be expanded with a 25-feet-by-50-feet concrete area.

“The old pavilion where they had the field days was what we turned into the skate park,” Rock said. “There is about 50 feet that is covered by the pavilion and we are now adding to that.”

The park is located on Kent Street, and Rock said that work will start around 9 a.m.
