By Shaun Kittle shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Long before Battle of Plattsburgh festivities take over the city in September, there will be a different battle in Plattsburgh.

And this one will involve mixed martial arts.

Dubbed “Battle in Plattsburgh 2,” the Xtreme Combat Promotions event will bring some of the top amateur fighters in the Northeast together to compete on Saturday, May 11 at the Crete Civic Center in Plattsburgh.

Many of the competitors live in the region, but for one of them, the event is a homecoming.

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — North Country job seekers will have an opportunity to meet perspective new employers at the North Country Chamber of Commerce Job Fair from 4 to 8 p.m. May 15 at the West Side Ballroom, 253 New York Road.

The Job Fair is cosponsored by the North Country Chamber of Commerce, One WorkSource, North Country Workforce Investment Board, JSEC, Hometown Radio, Hall Communications, Plattsburgh-No. Country Service Corp. and WPTZ. The fair will give local people the opportunity to find out what jobs are available in the region for all types of job-seekers.

“We have all types of businesses that are coming from media, manufacturing, CDL (commercial drivers license) truck drivers,” said Chamber Administrative Assistant Becky Manor.

There will be jobs for those with a variety of work and educational experience ranging from factory workers, truck drivers, to office jobs, media jobs and administration work.

The chamber holds two job fairs a year, one in September and one in May. Manor said there is usually 300 to 400 applicants The North Country Chamber of Commerce Job Fair will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. May 15 at the West Side Ballroom, 253 New York Road.

PLATTSBURGH – Exceptional men who have made an impact in the fight against breast cancer and numerous cancer survivors were honored at the Northeastern New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® “Pink Tie Guys” annual survivor luncheon at the Clifton Park Hilton Garden Inn. More than 230 attended “Pink Tie Guys.”

The event featured MC Kristi Gustafson Barlette of the Albany Times Union, who presented an overview highlighting 18 years of successful Race for the Cure and other fundraising events supporting breast cancer awareness, education, screening and treatment programs in the 15-county service area of the Komen Northeastern New York Affiliate, as well as supporting the Komen National Research Program.

“Pink Tie Guys” featured the presentation of awards to fifteen area men who have made an impact in the fight against breast cancer. Hon-

Many counties have opted for an earlier lastcall, as provided by state law. Saratoga County has not, and neither, to date, has Warren County.

In Clinton County, bars close at 2 a.m.

Essex County, on the other hand, voted Monday May 6 to close their bars at 3 a.m., and we applaud their decision. Essex County leaders took the bold step of passing a resolution for bar closing time to be rolled back from 4 a.m. to 3 a.m. Their action was taken after hearing from Mac MacDevitt of The Prevention Team of Essex County that alcohol is the third leading root cause of preventable death in the U.S., and is a key factor in the leading causes of death for teens and young adults — unintential injuries, violent crimes, vehicular crashes and murder.

Such alcohol-related incidents drive up the cost of health care, law enforcement, vehicular insurance and child welfare.

Warren County supervisors are now leaning toward striking a 3 a.m. compromise, which we believe makes sense. Kenny has said he will support a measure calling for a 3 a.m. last-call between May 25 and Sept. 15 and a 2 a.m. curfew the rest of the year. Such a proposal allows for later patying on the summer holidays and during major Lake George festivals.

This compromise accommodates the revenue concerns of tavern owners while offering the likely outcome of cutting down of criminal and violent behavior.

It also allows for restaurant and tavern employees to enjoy relaxing meet ups after work, while minimizing the incidence of drinkers crossing county borders at late hours for several more drinks. It’s unlikely that bar patrons will head out to a new destination at 3 a.m. for a few more drinks — they are much more likely to just go home.

Warren County leaders are now reaching out to their counterparts in Saratoga County to see if the two municipalities can collaborate on a 3 a.m. closing time — or maybe Kenny’s proposal — to minimize nighttime crime and DWI incidents.

We urge the leaders of the two counties to concentrate on the concerns of public safety and quality of life as they make their decisions, and not focus on the claims by a few tavern owners of their potential revenue loss.

In the meantime, we ask citizens to lobby their state legislators to enact a universal 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. bar closing time across New York State, or at least outside of New York City.

Nothing good occurs after 2 a.m. eek after week it seems, we read about violent acts in the region fueled by alcohol abuse.

Beatings, bar fights, street assaults, domestic attacks — many involving serious injuries or death. The toll is far higher when crashes involving drinking and driving are included.

Many of these incidents, law enforcement officials say, occur after perpetrators spend hours drinking at bars.

Statistics compiled by police indicate that a very high percentage of the incidents occur in the early morning hours.

Aware of these facts, Warren County and Saratoga County officials have proposed in recent years for bars to stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. instead of the state limit, which is 4 a.m.

Most recently — after a brutal beating outside a bar in Glens Falls — city 5th Ward Supervisor William Kenny spearheaded a new effort to shorten the nighttime hours in Warren County taverns, citing some alarming crime statistics.

Noting that incidents of violent crime soar past 1 a.m. or so, he has often said that “nothing good” occurs after 2 a.m. — and we agree. Apparently so do leaders of other counties across the state. Thirty-six counties have closing times earlier than 4 a.m.

At a recent hearing of the Warren County Board of Supervisors, about a half-dozen bar owners objected to the two-hour change, claiming that the late-night violence stemmed from lack of effective law enforcement, or was due to the misbehavior of merely a few of their clientele, and that an earlier last-call wouldn’t solve the problem.

They argued their revenue would suffer, and that bar patrons would choose to spend their time reveling in other counties, decreasing Warren County’s sales tax revenue. Worse yet, they said patrons were likely to drive drunk many miles after closing time, to a neighboring county to find a bar still open.

Also, the bar proprietors said that the latenight hours were primarily to accommodate after-hours gatherings of restaurant and bar employees, relaxing after work.

We at Denton Publications have seen the statistics of late-night violent crime, and they are disturbing to say the least. This roster of statistics included the fact that in 2012, the county dispatch center received nearly 250 calls concerning violent fights between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

New York State’s regulations for bars, prohibiting serving alcohol between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. daily, are among the most lenient in the northeastern U.S. It is hard to understand why bars have to

Members of the fraternity have denied saying anything, though the fraternity’s president later released a statement saying the members regretted something like that had happened.

Sharoni said prior to the derogatory remarks two freshman students who had been sexually assaulted while at a party had just shared their stories with the group.

After the march, news of the statements made from the fraternity spread around campus and the community, with social media helping get the word out. Sharoni said they wanted to hold a rally to bring closure to the march they were unable to complete.

“We had about 200, many rape survivors, who had not come to Take Back the Night come to the rally with signs; they were very

brave,” Sharoni said.

Lynda Ames, SUNY Plattsburgh Affirmative Action Officer, said her officer primarily deals with cases of sexual assault.

Though she couldn’t comment on the statements made at the march, she said in general when an allegation comes forward her office investigates to see if there was a criminal violation.

“Here we aim to educate and create a healthy atmosphere on campus for students, we put out the message every year,” Ames said. “I can tell you the number of rapes on campus and across the country are down but I can also tell you that most rapes are not reported.”

Ames said the college will be conducting its own investigation into the matter.

Marchers rally after Take Back the Night was disrupted

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State students, staff and community members joined in a rally on April 30 to empower survivors of sexual violence and to demand accountability after the annual Take Back the Night march was interrupted by negative remarks from a group of young men on Brinkerhoff Street April 27.

Nearly 200 students and community members gathered on the Redcay lawn on Brinkerhoff Street to support empowerment of victims of sexual assault.

They were also there to protest a few members of the AXP Fraternity who, according to participants in the Take Back the Night march, yelled “sluts” at the participants as they walked by the fraternity on Brinkerhoff Street.

“They were yelling sluts, sluts,” said Simona Sharoni, chair of the Gender and Women’s Studies Department at SUNY Plattsburgh. “It was so loud it drowned over our own chant, there

Rouses Point electric budget opportunity

ROUSES POINT — Beginning June 1, the Village of Rouses Point Municipal Electric Department will again make available to residential customers of the system, who have a 12 month clear record with the utility, the opportunity to pay their electric charges by a budget billing arrangement. Based upon previous years’ usage and a projected per kilowatt hour cost including supplemental power charge, a customer’s annual electric expense will be estimated and then paid in eleven payments, with the remaining month of May used to reconcile the underpayments or overpayments.

PLATTSBURGH — “The Belle of Amherst,” a one-woman play written by William Luce, will be performed at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts next weekend.

The play was originally directed by Charles Nelson Reilly and starred Julie Harris. It opened on April 28, 1976, at the Longacre Theatre in Manhattan, where it ran for 116 performances.

On Saturday, May 18, Kathleen Recchia, Grant Coordinator for the NCCCA, will assume the role of poet Emily Dickinson, the play’s only character.

The performance, which is part of the NCCCA’s spring performance series, will invite the audience into Emily Dickinson’s living room.

“It’s to make the audience feel like they’re right there, like they’re her guest,” Recchia said.

“Sometimes she’s speaking directly to the audience, sometimes she’s speaking to a character who the audience does not see because she’s reliving a scene in her life, and sometimes she’s just kind of reminiscing or reliving a scene internally, and maybe using poetry to show that.”

Dickinson wrote more than 1,800 poems, many of which were never published until after her death on May 15, 1886.

Her large body of work does not fit neatly into categories, and much of it reflects loneliness and a feeling of want while also suggesting the potential for happiness.

In “The Belle of Amherst,” her poems are used to advance her life, but they are not used in the chronological order that she wrote them.

“It’s very cathartic,” Recchia said. “There’s something that touches me when I do it, and I certainly hope it touches the audience. It’s a chance to hear her poetry come alive in the context of her life. It’s beautiful.”

Recchia’s performance will take place the day after the Adirondack Quilt Show opens at the NCCCA on Friday, May 17.

Former Plattsburgh resident Tony Villeneuve, of Clifton Park, New York, will be competing in the 135-pound class.

His match-up against David Weintraub of New York City will be the first that evening.

To prepare for the fight, his first, Villeneuve has been actively training for 14 months.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m excited to fight in Plattsburgh,” Villeneuve said.

“Fame goes with it if you get good, but that’s not what I’m thinking about right now. It just feels good to be able to go out there and compete in something I’ve trained so hard in.”

What Villeneuve is thinking about is his training, and how to win the fight against his opponent, David Weintraub of New York City.

Villeneuve has studied various forms of martial arts, including Taekwondo, Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo, and he also keeps himself in peak physical condition.

Between running and biking he covers 100 miles a week, and most of his work-outs include calisthenics and cardiovascular exercises—countless sit-ups, push-ups and squats.

Chazy School to perform Spring Concert

shaun@denpubs.com CHAZY — On Monday, May 13, more than 150 students will perform in the Chazy Central Rural School’s Spring Concert.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. and include a wide variety of musical styles including the jazz band, chorus, orchestra and concert band.

“The first group is third graders, who will be doing a demonstration on their recorders, and the High School Band will be finishing up with some John Williams songs,” said Robert Langr, Chazy Central Rural School’s Band Director. “It’s accessible, quality music that everybody knows.”

Some of the widely recognized music will include a medley of tunes from movies like Star Wars and E.T. during the “John Williams in Concert” performance, and the song “Brick House” by

the Commodores will be performed by the Jazz Ensemble.

The concert will also feature some a mix of modern and traditional numbers.

“This Land is Your Land,” by Woodie Guthrie, will be performed by the Elementary Chorus, the Elementary Band will perform “The Silver Scepter” by John Kinyon, the Jr. High Chorus will perform “Gaudeamus Hodie” by Natalie Sleeth, and the Senior Chorus will conclude the concert with “Chile Con Carne”
