ROUSES POINT — The village of Rouses Point is celebrating its golden anniversary of — well, celebrating.

Dennis Roberts and Geri Favreau are among members of a committee overseeing this year’s 50th Fourth of July celebration, slated for Saturday, July 3, and Sunday, July 4. The milestone event, aptly named “Rouses Point: 50 Years of Celebration,” is one they’re looking forward to, said Favreau.

Woman’s garden honors her mother

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MOOERS — When Paula Ashline thinks about her mother, it still gets to her.

It’s only been two years since Marion Richard of Champlain passed away from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

And, though each passing day has managed to get a little better for Ashline, it wasn’t until she created a garden in her mother ’s memory that she truly began to find peace.

“I always wanted to do a garden in memory of my mom,” said Ashline. “She had a very difficult time

breathing and had allergies, so she wasn’t capable of doing any of that stuff while she was here. This way, she can.”

Ashline began working on a garden at her Gilbert Road home last year as a Mother ’s Day project, making bleeding heart perennials the centerpiece of her creation. The flowering plant came into full bloom for the first time this year, just in time for this Mother ’s Day. “They look like a heart,” said Ashline. “They always reminds me of her.”

The garden is decorated with several angel statues and ornaments which were her mother ’s favorite, said Ashline.

“She always had this thing for angels,” she said. “When she was passing, we had angels around her at the hospital. I though having them [in the garden] would be a good way to remember my mother.”

Ashline said creating the garden in honor of her mother has been a cathartic experience and for her sister, Tammy Cameira of Hemmingford, who also created her own garden in honor of their mother.

“It just gives me so many memories when I walk by it or go out there to do stuff,” she said. “It gives me a feeling of being with her when I’m out there. It makes me feel good.”

Disc golf has arrived in the North Country

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CADYVILLE — Whether you call it disc golf, frisbee golf or frolf — it’s officially arrived in the North Country.

The town of Plattsburgh will hold a grand opening next Saturday, May 15, for the Cadyville Disc Golf Course. The ninehole course, located at the Cadyville Recreation Park on Goddeau Road, is the latest venture for the town’s recreation department.

Recreation department director Melanie Defayette said she’s excited for the official opening of the course, which has been in the development process for the past year. Through collaboration with three local disc golf players — Aric Strauss and Zack Racine of Plattsburgh and Ryan Ficociello of Morrisonville — the town has been able to take what was once a sport played on courses as far away as Saratoga and bring it to their own backyard.

“When they came to me about [developing a course], I started checking out costs and what it would take to make it happen,” said Defayette.

The process included consulting with others who had experience in creating similar courses, said Defayette. It also involved reaching out to several organizations for funding, she added, such as Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Community Action for Health and the Clinton County Health Department.

Ultimately, the town was awarded enough grant funding to cover the cost of developing a course at the park, with the town just left to contribute the labor and cost of minor materials to

enhance the project, said Defayette.

“We threw in the extras but got the guts of it from the grants,” she said.

While the recreation department’s programs for younger children and seniors have typically done well, the sport of disc golf is something Defayette believes will open a door to a demographic the department has always strived to reach — 18to 30-year-olds.

“That’s really a population we’ve never really hit before,” said Defayette. “It’s very hard to hit the mark with that group, but we believe this will fill that gap.”

North Countryman - 3 That’s mainly because it’s a relatively easy sport to pick up, based on the same principles as what disc golfers call “ball golf.”

“It really is an activity for everybody, from active seniors to kids,” said Defayette. “It may be a little more difficult for kids at first, but once they learn how to play, they’ll have fun with it.”

Strauss agreed.

“The more you play, the faster you see improvement,” he said.

“I was terrible when I first started,” added Ficociello, “but I’ve come a long way.”

Even Defayette said she’s gotten in on the act.

“I’m hooked on it,” she admitted. “When I go on vacation now, I start Googling where the local courses are. It’s very addictive.”

And, though the course hasn’t officially opened, Racine said many people have already been making use of it.

“I’ve been meeting so many people out here, which is great,” said Racine. “People are hearing about it.”

“The best thing about this is it’s free,” said Defayette. “You show up with your discs — which are as cheap as $5 each— and you just play.”

“It’s a very cheap sport, which is one of the big pluses of it,” added Strauss.

Defayette said through another grant from the Clinton County Health Department, the town is in the process of developing an additional nine holes for the course, to be installed by this fall.

“So, we’ll be an official 18-hole course, which will really put it on the map,” said Defayette.

The May 15 grand opening will be held from 12-2 p.m.

“I’ve got to give credit to the town board, because they’ve been extremely supportive,” said Defayette. “And, the staff that put it in has really taken this project on. It’s their baby.”

Technological reflections Top signs a senior needs help

T

he end of the school year is here with all the usual activities; registration for summer and fall, honor society inductions, academic awards, and the annual college employee recognition event to name a few. It’s also a time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and immediately start planning for the next.

During the year, students in the computer program spent more time on some subjects and did new things as well. For instance, they spent more time configuring routers by delving deeper into typical administrative chores. Wireless technology is growing fast. In response, students spent a more time in that area by deploying a business-class Cisco access point and configuring clients for access.

In the past, we studied Voice over IP technology but didn’t have a hands-on piece. That changed with the donation from Twin State last December of three Mitel VoIP phones. The phones allowed students the opportunity to perform a typical phone configuration and setup a working IP PBX. We only scratched the surface of VoIP technology but students progressed to the point where the phones functioned

and students placed calls to each other within the classroom.

The computer advisory committee, an outside group that helps us stay current with the computer industry, encouraged adding a virtual computing piece to the curriculum. As a result, students worked through a project of learning about and then installing the

Once the Hypervisor was in place they downloaded a virtual appliance and then created a custom virtual machine by installing and configuring an operating system.

Over the summer, I plan to refine the newer hands-on lab activities and extend them where possible. It’s a constant chore keeping up, but absolutely necessary to keep the computer programs up to date.

7. Look through the mail. Is mom’s dementia causing her to forget to pay bills and answer correspondence?

8. Look below bathroom and kitchen sinks. Is poor eyesight making it difficult for your elderly relative to read medication labels and to properly store cleaning materials? Is he forgetting to refill medications and to take them on schedule? Check the refill date against the number of pills in the bottle to help determine if your loved one is taking medication regularly. Or call the pharmacy.

9. Look at your senior ’s appearance. Is clothing dirty and unkempt, and is your loved one neglecting personal hygiene?

10. Look to your parents’ neighbors and other close friends to find out about their daily routine. Are your seniors at home more, watching television and avoiding stimulating conversation and companionship?

Has your loved one’s declining health prompted her to purchase more convenience and junk foods, and neglect proper nutrition? Is she losing weight?

3. Look on top of furniture and countertops.

Are dust and dirt signs that household tasks are becoming more difficult for your parents?

4. Look up at fans and ceilings. Has the inability to lift her arms and climb stepstools prevented your loved one from cleaning soot and grime from high places? Caution your senior not to climb.

5. Look down at floors and stairways. Have shaky hands spilled drinks and food, soiling vinyl, wood, carpets and walkways? Are frayed carpets, throw rugs, objects and furniture creating tripping hazards? Does dad’s bad knee put him at greater risk on cracked sidewalks and with broken stair rails?

Tips for planting success

S

pring is the perfect time in the North Country to plant trees and shrubs — even if it is still cool outside. Planting when it is cool and moist out is less stressful on the plant. The cool weather gives the plant more time to recover from the shock of being planted.

One common way to purchase a tree or shrub at your local garden center is container-grown.

Here are 10 easy steps to follow to help ensure a successful planting: • Dig a hole that’s at least 6 inches wider than the container on all sides and about the same depth. Then, roughen up the sides of the hole with your shovel.

• Mix the soil you dug out of the hole with an equal amount of compost.

• Remove the plant from its container by tilting the pot onto its side, tapping lightly, and gently sliding the rootball out of the container.

• Gently tease out any roots that are encircling the rootball with your fingers so the roots are spread out. Roots encircling the rootball can constrict growth and eventually kill the tree or shrub. At this time also clip off any browned and damaged roots.

• Set the plant into the hole you keep the tree or shrub nice and straight during this process.

• Stop filling the hole after adding about 4 inches of soil to gently firm up the soil with your foot or hoe to remove any air pockets. Repeat the process until the hole is filled.

• Water slowly to saturate the soil and remove any remaining air pockets.

• Use any extra soil to build a temporary berm at the drip line (the place on the ground below the outer edges of the leaves) and water again.

• Mulch to retain moisture, but keep the mulch at least 6 inches away from the trunk of the tree. Mulching right up to the trunk can cause rot.

• Make sure your tree or shrub receives at least an inch of water a week during the first year.

And, last but not least, enjoy your new addition to your landscape! If you want to plant a tree or shrub later during the summer, it is still possible. Planting during the heat will be more stressful. Keeping the plant well watered can help alleviate this stress.

Egg Hunt a success Spring is finally here and the Rouses Point Dodge Memorial Library is very busy. On March 27, the Friends of the Library hosted an egg hunt. Additionally, the library had a book sale and open house. It was a huge success.

Although it was very difficult to count the number of people who attended the days events, there was between 100-150 people. The library staff, board of trustees and Friends of the Library would like to thank the many volunteers and businesses who donated items and time to make this event a success.

The flowers don’t lie : Trout season starting to heat up M

other ’s Day weekend, which typically signals the peak of spring brook trout angling opportunities, is almost here. But, if the most reliable, natural indicators are to be trusted; the peak of the season has already come and gone.

While hiking into a favored backwoods pond over the weekend, the wildflowers were in bloom. A carpet of Trout Lilies was interspersed with the tall, and not so fragrant flowers of purple trilliums.

Witchhobble, a common woodland shrub also known as buckbrush or cripplebrush, was also in bloom; with pods of white flowers adorning it’s tangled branches.

According to the old adage, brook trout bite best when the “leaves of the buckbrush are the size of a mouse’s ear”. Unfortunately, they’re now nearly the size of a deer ’s ear.

Experienced brook trout anglers, who recognize such familiar natural signs, are surprised by their early arrival, coming nearly two week’s ahead of usual.

However, they shouldn’t be! Fiddlehead ferns are already unfurling and the blackflies have drawn their first blood. There is no doubt that this year ’s season has been accelerated.

Despite last week’s brief return of winter weather, March Brown mayflies were hatching on the ponds and trout were slurping down a healthy hatch of Hendricksons on the streams.

Once in the tissues of a fish, the parasite causes obvious mechanical damage and hemorrhaging.

While the damage caused is usually negligible, infestations in greater numbers may occasionally kill the host fish.

Loons are a key component in the parasite’s life cycle, since the infected fish must be eaten by the final host to complete its lifecycle. Unfortunately, there is no practical treatment or control of the parasite at this time. It is important to note that the parasite does not infect humans, other mammals or birds, even though it can live for 4 years in a fish.

In most trout species, the parasite rarely appears in the meat of the fish, and cooking the fish kills the parasites evident on the skin.

Pre-peppered brook trout

Friends and guests alike often ask me about a cosmetic malady that is commonly found on many species of our local gamefish. As one old friend remarked, “It’s great to catch brook trout that are pre-peppered!”

Despite appearances, the small, black spots found on the skin of species ranging from brook trout and yellow perch to bass and northern pike is actually a caused by a small immature larval parasite.

The parasite, Apophallus brevis is also known as “Black grubs,” “Black spot disease,” or “Neascus infection parasite”.

The malady can be found afflicting fish on many Adirondack waters, since the Common Loon is the parasite’s host and transmitter. Adult worms live in a loon’s mouth, where they produce eggs, which are swallowed by the loon and pass through its digestive system unharmed.

The parasite’s eggs, released into the water with the loon’s feces, will mature and swim away to penetrate mollusks such as snails and occasionally clams, which are the first intermediate hosts.

Planned Parenthood awarded $50,000 grant Funding to help improve quality of patient care

Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Planned Parenthood of the North Country New York Inc. was recently awarded the 2010 Robyn Menin Grant for Promoting Ingenuity in Risk and Quality Management from the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The $50,000 grant is given annually to an affiliate for “innovative work in risk and quality management.”

Martha E. Stahl, vice president of external affairs for PPNCNY, said the grant will be used to create “an interactive health literacy software tool that will assess the accessibility of the organization’s written materials to patients with limited literacy.”

“The whole purpose of it is to make sure that our written materials are accessible and

are written at a reading level that’s appropriate for our general population,” said Stahl. “It’s as simple as instead of using a medical term for a growth, for example, calling it a ‘bump’ or something like that. It will be a more comprehensive format.”

Over the past few years, PPNCNY has been working with a statewide organization called Family Planning to assess how PPNCNY has been doing in terms of cultural competency, said Stahl.

With other Planned Parenthood affiliates, issues such as bilingual signage or reading materials are more prevalent issues. However, in the North Country, patient reading comprehension was found to be among chief concerns.

“We self-identified that as an area where we needed to do some work,” said Stahl.

Amy Valentine, coordinator of quality assurance and risk management for PPNCNY, said the organization will work locally with

a software designer to create the program, which will be utilized in Microsoft Word much like a spell check or grammar check program. The software will search for and replace difficult terms — both health-related and otherwise — as well as calculate

readability and create detailed reports. In the end, PPNCNY will own the rights to the program and create a style guide so it will be able to share both across the Planned Parenthood federation.

Do what you love. Exercise should be fun and you are more likely to continue to do something that you enjoy rather than dread.

Pick a time and stick to it. Consider it like an appointment to yourself, your health, and your well-being. Schedule it in if you have to. Set some goals and strive to achieve them. Find a friend to help keep each other motivated, and change up your routine often to keep your body guessing and to keep things exciting.

Local woman’s calendars look at Saranac’s history

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — Sylvia Newman loves the town of Saranac. So much, in fact, she enjoys sharing its beauty with others.

Since 2005, Newman has compiled images from days long gone by and even present day to create an annual calendar. The project started as a way to raise $25,000 to restore a local Civil War monument, with the 2006 calendar highlighting images of the statue and receiving an overwhelming response, said Newman.

“We raised the money in a year between the calendars, fundraisers and people giving donations,” she said.

Newman decided to continue her endeavor the following year, with the 2007 calendar featuring images of some of Saranac’s historic houses. It continued with a 2008 calendar featuring local watering holes along what was known as “the River Run.” “The River Run consisted of bars between Cadyville and Loon Lake,” explained Newman, “and, on the River Run, people would stop and have a drink at every bar along the way and back.”

“Of course, that was back in the ‘50s when you could do that,” she said.

The 2009 calendar featured images of the infamous flood that devastated the town on July 12, 1947, and, this year, one-room schoolhouses were highlighted in a calendar titled “Early Schools of the Saranac Valley.”

“I think there was 17 or 18 at one time,” said Newman. “Finding photos for that one was the hard part. A lot of people didn’t have cameras back then.”

The 2011 calendar, which recently was completed and made available, bears the theme “Have You Ever Wondered?” The calendar features photos taken by former PressRepublican photographer Rob Fountain, among other images, of buildings and structures throughout the town that many people may wonder how they came to be or what they are, said Newman.

“I know people have wondered about them because I know I have,” said Newman.

On the cover, an image of the “Old Iron Bridge” which spans the Saranac River on Soper Road is featured, along with a description of the circa 1910 structure. Photos like that are the reason Newman decided to

Public hearing May 20 to address restoration of old railroad station ROUSES POINT — Village Mayor George A. Rivers has announced a public informational meeting will be held at the Rouses Point Civic Center, 39 Lake St., Thursday, May 20, from 7-9 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the proposed restoration of the former Delaware and Hudson Railway Station on Pratt Street.

The village, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Transportation, is developing design studies for the historic restoration of the station and site work. A copy of the Draft Project Scoping report/Final Design Report is available for review at the village office, located at 139 Lake St. During the meeting, comments will be sought on the proposed project from individuals, groups,

officials and local agencies on the draft report. The village is specifically soliciting comments on the development of alternatives for the project and comments on the project’s social, economic and environmental effects.

The public informational meeting is part of the continuing efforts by the state Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and village of Rouses Point to encourage public input into the development of transportation projects.

PLATTSBURGH — The Battle of Plattsburgh Association has announced winners of its annual essay contest. The contest focused on the September 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh.

The winners for grades 4-5 were: First place — Emma Spronk, Tree of Life Home School; second place — Everett Sapp, Beekmantown Central School; and third place — Emily Douglas, Peru Intermediate School.

Winners for grades 6-8 were: First place — Pascal Spronk, Tree of Life Home School; second place — Joey Garrand, Northern Adirondack Central School; and third place — Sabrina Steele, Northern Adirondack Central School.

‘Teaching Garden’set to begin this Monday PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension Clinton County will be providing hands-on gardening education to community members interested in learning how to grow their own food through a teaching garden.

The Plattsburgh teaching garden will be offered at the Plattsburgh Community Garden located in Melissa L. Penfield Park on Boynton Avenue from Monday, May 10, through Thursday, Sept. 23 Classes will meet Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The cost for the four-month class is $100, which covers all classes, the community garden plot fee, water use, all plants and seeds, use of tools, soil amendments, and all of the produce grown during the class. A payment plan and need based scholarships are available upon request.

Community members interested in attending the class portion of the teaching garden are encouraged to do so. A modest donation of $5 per class is requested to help ensure long-term sustainability of the teaching garden.

Knights Columbus to host golf tournament PERU — St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 will host its 24th annual golf tournament at the Adirondack Golf and Country Club, 88 Golf Club Way, Friday, June 18.

The four-person scramble will feature a “New Car Hole in One” prize sponsored by Bill McBride Chevrolet. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and will be followed by an awards dinner in the clubhouse.

Gratto said he hopes the Adventure Club is a gateway activity that leads to even more positive interaction between students and school staff and amongst each other.

“Certainly, if you can get kids to realize that getting involved with a school activity isn’t torture, that it can actually be fun, hopefully it will make them more open-minded to other opportunities,” said Gratto. “We do have a lot of great opportunities here.”

Assistant principal Kate McNeil agreed, adding it’s also a great way to build a rapport with students.

“It’s been great and I’m happy Mr. Gratto has given me an opportunity to help plan something different, something not normally done at school,” she said. “I’m just looking forward to our next adventure.”

As for what that adventure will be, Gratto said he doesn’t know, only that he’s open to suggestions.

“I’ve heard some talk of whitewater rafting,” he said. “I wouldn’t say no to that.”

year. So, this year will be the 50th.”

Though the Fourth of July celebration has been downsized this year from a three-day event to a two-day one, many of the festivities people have become familiar with will return, said Favreau.

On that Saturday, garage sales will be hosted village-wide and the Rouses Point Volunteer Fire Department will host a boot drive. Kids Day will also return that day at the Rouses Point Civic Center with a bike decorating contest and magic show. Music by Rest Ave. will round out the evening along with a boat parade at dusk hosted by local marinas.

On Sunday, a car show will be hosted at the civic center and a chicken barbecue will be served across the street at the fire department.

The highly-anticipated parade will begin at 6 p.m. that day followed by fireworks at dusk.

Several other facets to the weekend are still in the planning stages, said Favreau, including lining up entertainment to perform on the village’s new stage Sunday afternoon.

However, the biggest change people will notice with the celebration, said Roberts, will be the lack of a beer tent this year.

“In years passed, there’s always been a beer tent either sponsored by the [Rouses Point Sportsmans Club] or the fire department,” explained Roberts, “but, this year, we didn’t have an organization willing to take it on. So, we as a committee, opted to go alcohol-free this year.”

Though the celebration will be sans booze, Roberts and Favreau still think there will be more than enough reasons for people to come out to support what has become a Rouses Point tradition.

“The only difference that I see this year with years previous is we went from a Friday evening-Saturday-Sunday event to a Saturday-Sunday event and there’s no beer tent this year,” said Roberts. “Other than that, all the other activities are still in place.”

“It will still be an event that brings out the people,” added Favreau.

The only things they’re lacking, said Roberts, are volunteers.

“There’s been a lack of support from the community, as far as working the booths and chairing different events,” said Roberts, who noted only a small group of “hard-working” volunteers have signed on to help this year. “There’s a lack of support, but there doesn’t seem to be a lack of interest.”

Though the community would like to see the event happen, stepping up to make it happen is critical in seeing it last another 50 years, he said.

“It’s dwindling each year and the fear is it will go away completely if people don’t step up and offer their assistance,” Roberts said of the event.

Keshia Clukey named BPW Young Careerist winner

By Michael O’Keefe Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — Keshia Clukey has been named winner of the 2010 Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s annual Young Careerist Competition.

Clukey, a freelance journalist and a part-time substitute teacher, was recognized by the nonprofit organization during a dinner at the Westside Ballroom April 20.

She won the competition after a written essay, personal interview and speech proved she was the one who should move on to the state level of the competition.

“I’m really surprised,” Clukey said on winning the contest. “I entered as a whim.”

Clukey, a recent master ’s degree graduate, competed against six other young entrepreneurs from different professional back-

However, she looked to her past experience as a public speaker and writer to help deliver her speech, which will now be read at an upcoming state level BPW competition.

“It’s the same speech [at the state level],” she said. “But, I’m definitely going to tweak it.”

Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation of CVPH Medical Center, was selected as runner-up for the local competition. If Clukey is unable to attend the state competition, Haley will be able to take her place.

The essay was to address a senator who stands in opposition to one of Champlain Valley BPA’s platforms. The winning topic chose to discuss women’s rights issues, such as heart disease and ovarian cancer, that are frequently overlooked because of more controversial ones, such as abortion.

After the essay, the six finalists were invited to a dinner, at which they were interviewed by a judge.

They were also given a list of six questions, one of which they would have to deliver a speech on.

Clukey chose work/life issues within the genders.

“Men and women have to struggle with balancing their work and life,” she explained.

Morrisonville woman receives award PLATTSBURGH — Michele A. Snyder, Morrisonville, has received a Lucile Cornetet Individual Award for professional development from The Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation. The award will enable Snyder, an associate professor of science at Clinton Community College, to attend the 2010 National Association for Research in Science Teaching Annual International Conference.

Dr. Judith Raybern, chairperson of the DKG Educational Foundation board of trustees, announced the foundation awardSnyder ed $19,934 to outstanding educators to enable them to attend professional activities in their respective fields.

Snyder teaches coursework in biology and serves as science outreach coordinator at CCC. Her efforts have moved science beyond the classroom into the community by initiating a variety of science educational programs for area youth including A Day of Science Exploration for fifth grade students, the Champlain Valley Regional Science Fair, and summer programming for middle and high school students in robotics and biotechnology.

“As a reflective practitioner, knowing and understanding how research can inform practice is an important component of my teaching philosophy,” stated Snyder. “Attending this research conference will broaden and better develop my understanding of the current science educational research and not only inform my practice in the classroom, but also the programming offered to our community through the college’s science outreach initiative.”

Snyder is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in science education curriculum and instruction through the Department of Educational Theory and Practice at the University of Albany.
