Saranac man sustains severe gunshot wound

Arrest made in connection with incident SARANAC — One man is in critical condition and another is in custody following a shooting incident in the town of Saranac.

According to state police, Jamie F. LaPorte, 35, Saranac, sustained a single gunshot wound to the head while at the Standish Road residence of Clark P. Ray, 42, also of Saranac, April 10. A preliminary investigation revealed LaPorte then drove himself from the scene and drove into a snow bank on Cold Brook Road. Police and rescue personnel were then notified at 11:49 p.m.

Local woman produces final calendar in series

SARANAC — When Sylvia Newman started compiling local calendars more than seven years ago, she didn’t realize she started a tradition that would result in six pieces of local history.

“A lot of people collect my calendars.

They have to make sure they get each one,” said Newman, laughing. “It’s been fun.”

Originally inspired in 2005 to create a calendar to raise money to restore a local Civil War monument, Newman has compiled images over the years into several artistic daykeepers as a way to celebrate Saranac’s history. Previous calendars have centered on images of the town’s historic houses, local bars and restaurants, and the flood which devastated the town on July 12, 1947. Last year, her calendar focused on one-room schoolhouses in the Saranac Valley.

In her final endeavor in the world of calendar creations, Newman’s 2012 calendar will focus on local postcards.

“It’s a fun one,” Newman said of the project. “It’s made up of postcards of different scenes of some historical buildings and places in Saranac. It’s just what I had in my photo files, I have albums full of old pictures and I had a bunch of old postcards.”

The calendar also features a brief history of postcards that Newman hopes will entertain and educate.

“That’s quite interesting, too,” Newman said.

“I have a lot of historical photos I’d like to do write-ups on,” she said. “It’d be nice to get my photos out there. I have a lot of photos of when Standish when they had the mines up there.”

For now, though, Newman will focus on promoting her latest calendar.

The cost of the calendar is $10 each, with those buying them able to buy two and get one free. Calendars may be purchased in participating local stores or by contacting Newman at 293-7337.

ROUSES POINT — The Rouses Point Volunteer Fire Department will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast this Sunday, April 17, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The cost of the meal will be $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens 65 and older, $6 for children ages 6-12 and free from children younger than 6.

The menu will include eggs, omelettes, pancakes, toast, home fries, ham, sausage, and more.

Donations will be accepted for the St. Patrick’s Food Shelf.

Uncovering history

Mountain Lake PBS receives $1,500 grant from IP

St. John to address historical society this Wednesday

PLATTSBURGH — The International Paper Company Foundation granted a $1500 grant to the Mountain Lake PBS. The grant is designed to facilitate the Education and Outreach Department with money for books and also for the station's Imagine Yourself Reading program.

The Imagine Yourself Reading program largely mimics the national PBS program Ready To Learn. The programs focus includes current research on ways to bolster reading skills are included in literacy at home, school, in child care and in the community.

ROUSES POINT — The Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society will present an evening with Robert St. John, Wednesday, April 20, at American Legion Montgomery Post 912, 29 Pratt St., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

St. John, who serves as post commander and historian, will share research he has done on Montgomery Post 912 and local veterans.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and cash bar will be offered.

Church to host community Seder meal, discusses the meaning of annual event

Special to Denton Publications PERU — Though a Seder meal is often known for its including in Jewish Passover celebrations, Lana Knight said it’s also an important celebration for Christians.

Knight, who serves as Peru Community Church’s director of Christian education, said the meal — which pertains to the Last Supper and initiation of holy communion — is something that also demonstrates meaningfulness to those of the Christian faith.

“Passover dinner, celebrates the turning point between [Jesus’] triumphant entry and his death on the cross,” said Knight.

Peru Community Church hosts an annual Seder meal — slated this year for Thursday, April 21 — which begins with a ceremonial plate containing six symbolic items such as egg, parsley, shank bone, cherub fat,lettuce, and a bitter herb.

“Each one of those is explained during the Seder ceremony,” noted Knight.

The 15-minute ritual is followed by the regular dinner, and an optional Maundy Thursday or “Tenebrae” service at 7 p.m.

The Seder meal is increasingly celebrated as part of holy week by many Christians, who are celebrating Jesus’ life and work.

“The Seder dinner was used by Jesus to explain his ministry one last time. Many people don’t realize it was the first time he said, ‘Do this in memory of me,’” said Knight.

An important element of the Seder dinner is inviting others to celebrate. The inclusion of others was requested by Jesus, to spread

the faith, she said.

“It is common practice to invite others to a Seder meal,” said Knight. “To pronounce one’s christianity after Jesus’ death— you were sure to die, Christianity was very secretive. That’s why the Seder is open to everyone, to share the faith,” said Knight.

Despite its affiliation with the church, Knight stressed the impartiality and noncommittal elements of the Seder dinner.

“There’s no obligation, it’s just an interesting thing to sit through,” she said.

The meal and recitations will also be mostly in English.

“It’s a very much passive role as guests, mostly observation.” she said.

Donations to defray the cost of the meal are appreciated, as well as a pre-dinner head count.

“We were able to cover the cost of the meal last year, which was really great,” said Knight.

All ages are welcome, and supplemental handouts, including coloring books will be available.

Knight emphasized the educational and non-threatening elements of the ceremony.

“It takes the mystery out of the Seder rituals. It’s a cool thing that people should try at least once,” said Knight.

The Seder meal will be held next Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The dinner will be held at the fellowship center, located at 13 Elm St. For more information,call 643-8641.

Civil War events: A time to commemorate, not celebrate

W

hen it comes to marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War (18611865), local groups should choose their event titles wisely, and the media should be careful when covering these stories. We should be “commemorating” this anniversary over the next four years, not “celebrating” it.

This happens a lot today in the Digital Age. The media makers — all shouting loudly to be heard over the din of news coverage online, on TV, on the radio and in print — routinely report anniversary stories of noteworthy historical events, many of which have led to the deaths of people. Caught up in the excitement, they sometimes refer to these anniversaries as “celebrations.”

This week, as we mark the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, how can we possibly “celebrate” the deaths of more than 600,000 Americans?

Newspapers sometimes shave a few letters off a word to fit in a headline.

And in radio and television, shorter words sound better than longer ones.

But even if “celebrate” is one less syl-

This week marks the anniversary of the first shot of the Civil War — on April 12, 1861 — when Confederate batteries opened fire on federal troops at Fort Sumter, Charleston, S.C. Schools, churches, courthouses and other government buildings in western New York rang their bells for two minutes at 10 a.m. Tuesday as a tribute. In Rensselaer County, a re-enactment group held a ceremonial cannon firing at noon. And in Brooklyn, the Culinary Historians of New York held an evening lecture, “Starving the South: How the North Won the Civil War.” Of all the states, New York sent the most amount of soldiers to the battlefield (about 500,000) during the Civil War and suffered the most amount of casualties (about 53,000 killed).

Many families in the Adirondack North Country region can trace their roots to a Civil War soldier, many coming from the famed 118th New York Volunteer Regiment, known as the Adirondack Regiment. This will be a time to remember those soldiers who fought and those who died to keep the United States whole.

And as we begin this four-year exploration into our history, the question of “Why did we fight the Civil War?” will

be thoroughly examined. Was it states' rights or slavery? In any case, the history of slavery in America will be retold, and New York's contribution to the abolitionists' cause will be marked with events and stories from the Adirondack North Country Region.

Abolitionist John Brown was buried on his farm outside of Lake Placid in 1859, and it is now a state historic site.

And the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association is instrumental in teaching the public about moving runaway slaves through the major Champlain Line of the Underground Railroad from Albany to Canada.

Little is told, however, of the slaves who lived, worked and died in New York state. Perhaps telling these stories could be part of the Civil War sesquicentennial commemoration. In south-

ern Hamilton County, for example, land baron Philip Rhinelander Jr. moved from New York City to what is now Speculator, N.Y., in the early 1800s. He built an estate, complete with a sawmill, orchards, a farm and a mansion. He also had living quarters — and a cemetery — for his slaves. Here in the Adirondack Park, slavery was part of everyday life for some wealthy families.

Slavery is part of our history, a part that should also be told, not celebrated.

Letters to the Editor Upset with items in recent edition It is appalling to read the depth of the misinformation contained in a recent issue of the North Countryman of April 9th.

On page 7, in the second letter to the editor titled “Remembering Victims Have Rights” contains so called information that is so misleading! Completely ignored is the fact that the smallest victims, the preborn, are not even considered as humans! Over 1,000 of these victims’ remains were disposed of with medical waste right here at 66 Brinkerhoff St., Plattsburgh.

The second article from page 15 of the same North Countryman, has an article claiming that Planned Parenthood “marks fourth year in helping sexual assault victims.” Hidden cameras of investigators have revealed that Planned Parenthood helps and instructs pimps on how to circumvent laws against this and hide their activities.

Nuclear crisis brings up point The nuclear crisis in Japan reminds us of the urgent need to develop renewable energy sources. In Vermont, though, controversy rages over which types of renewable energy development are appropriate. But this debate is actually moot. It doesn’t matter whether one believes that wind turbines work or not, or are acceptable on ridge lines. It is a fact of physics that ridge line wind in the Eastern US has very little potential to replace coal and nuclear. According to Department of Energy figures, if all of the onshore commercially viable wind resource of the Eastern United States were developed, only about 17 gigawatts of conven-

tional generation could be offset at best, and probably much less in practice. Compare this with the fact that US demand for electricity is equivalent to 450 gigawatts of continually operating generation, and that electricity accounts for only about one third of our energy consumption.

Only a massive expansion of solar generation has the potential at present to significantly reduce conventional generation in the Eastern U.S. Wind power from offshore or from the Midwest might also contribute in principle, but it is not certain that either resource will be environmentally or economically acceptable. We would be much better off focusing on ramping up solar now, and accelerating its cost reduction in the process, rather than pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into an approach that will mainly just devastate our mountaintop ecosystems, our eco-tourism based economy, and divide our closely knit communities into warring camps.

New York State should examine selling its leisure facilities F irst let me congratulate Gov. Cuomo, the Assembly, the Senate and their administrative staffs for adopting the budget on time and reducing the tax burden on its citizens. As a small business, we really need the relief this can provide and it’s a great first step in a very long process of returning New York to fiscal responsibility.

Several weeks ago sent out a blanket request for help with the difficult task ahead. With that thought in mind, in a recent conversation with Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, she mentioned a number of state-owned facilities that would appear to not fit with state government.

New York must prioritize where it spends its money and how those expenditures affect the majority of New Yorkers. It won’t happen overnight, but the state needs to begin the process of liquidating these facilities or leasing them to private operators for a sound profit or turning them over to local municipalities whose citizen stand to benefit from their use.

At a point in time, the state could afford to provide these types of facilities, but with the current state of the economy, it can no longer do so, especially if it is subsidizing their continued operations.

If New York state is out to save every community’s valuable assets that are struggling, how far will they go? Will they purchase a local super market, gas station, liquor store, insurance company, or even a newspaper if they get into trouble down the road? These are all value assets to their communities, but isn’t it better to let free enterprise dictate what is valuable and what is not?

Government control and ownership is not the answer to every problem.

Understanding your soil

t’s finally happening.

The temperatures are on the rise and spring is soon to be here. This winter was cold, snowy, and long. And if you are anything like me, you are anxious to get out into your lawn and garden. But, we should not be too anxious.

If we get out into our gardens or onto our lawns too soon, we could be damaging the soil. Healthy soil is important for healthy plants.

Working and walking on wet soils can cause soil compaction. Soil compaction occurs when pressure on the soil reduces pore space in the soil. All soil is comprised of organic material and mineral material. Between these particles is empty space or pores. These pores allow both water and air to reach the plant’s roots. Roots need both air for respiration and they absorb water for the plant’s photosynthesis, or food making process.

Soil that contains a significant portion of clay, like the soils found in the Champlain Valley, are more easily compacted. In addition, water acts as a lubricant. Water lets soil particles compress together easier.

Compacted soil reduces the rate of water distribution through the soil to plant roots. In addition, compacted soil reduces air space available for plant roots and will

And if poor drainage from an excess of water being held in the soil and poor aeration aren’t enough to convince you of the undesirability of compacted soil, increased erosion will make you think again, as the water landing on the surface runs off elsewhere because the hard surface on the soil prevents penetration of the water.

Because soil compaction has such negative impacts on our garden plants and lawns, it is best to wait until our soils dry more before cultivating them and walking on them. If you happen to find that your soils are compacted there are numerous commercial products available on the market that you can use to improve the soil. It is best to discuss these with your local nursery or horticultural specialist so that you can get the right type of soil improver suitable for your region and personal needs. The main aim of a soil improver is to bind the soil particles back together again so that it can hold a good structure that won’t compact.

he summer is coming and swimsuit season is almost here, get swimsuit ready in just 2 weeks! I hear it and see it in headlines every year and it frustrates me beyond belief. I say it all the time “DIETS” Do NOT work! Especially those with claims like the one above, promising you your dream body in a short amount of time. Crash diets are best to be avoided, or any “diet” for that matter. They will mess up your metabolism and leave you “fatter” than when you started. Most of these “diets” require you to restrict your calories so much that you are not meeting your metabolic needs. While you may drop weight fast, your body will be burning your precious muscle for fuel, not fat. When all is said and done your body fat percentage will be higher than when you started.

Most people who go in diets gain all the weight back plus more! You can bet that the “more” is in the form of body fat leaving you worse off than before you went on the “diet.” This effect is commonly known as “yo-yo” dieting. Please avoid it at all costs.

A healthy way of approaching weight loss is to make gentle changes to your lifestyle and eating habits. Instead of thinking that you will become deprived of your favorite foods, think about what you can add to your current diet to make it healthier. When you look down at your plate is it over loaded with dead brown foods or is it colorful and lively. Remember that you are what you eat and that we eat to nourish our bodies. So if your plate is lacking veggies, start with adding a veggie to each meal. Try eating only until you are no longer hungry instead of eating until you are stuffed. This will teach you to pay closer atten-

tion to how you are feeling when you are eating. Most of the time, we are eating while doing something else, watching TV, reading emails, and even while driving! Try slowing down and take the time to enjoy your food, the textures and the tastes. Add a walk to your lunch break, especially now that the weather is getting nicer, get outside for a nice walk and soak up the sun and fresh air. It will give you a nice mental break as well as sneaking in some exercise.

Cut out the sugar laden sodas, sugary juices, and energy drinks.

You know they are terrible for your health, you hear it all the time, so why put it in your body. Before you eat or drink something. Ask yourself, is this nourishing my body or doing me more harm than good. Then make the decision if you really want to eat it. You have a choice, you are in control. By making simple changes to your lifestyle you can easily turn things around and gain control over your health. Change things up one area at a time or dive head first and tackle multiple areas that can be improved. Either way do what you are ready for and continue to improve by trying something new every week or so. Don’t torture yourself with a DIET. LIVE and enjoy life and what it has to offer. Open your eyes to new experiences, take a deep breath and go! What are you waiting for? Seriously, start today, you will be thanking yourself tomorrow.

Cold-like symptoms found to be something more serious Twenty-one-year-old diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — When it seemed like she was experiencing an ordinary cold, it came as a big surprise to 21-year-old Samantha Zalusky of Plattsburgh when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

According to Samantha’s mother, Tammy L. Zalusky, Samantha was experiencing a nagging cough and a fever Feb. 28.

“I thought it was the virus going around that was pretty rampant at the time,” said Tammy.

Upon taking Samantha to the emergency room at CVPH Medical Center, doctors initially suspected her daughter had pneumonia, said Tammy. However, after chest Xrays were taken, a mass was found in the middle of Samantha’s chest, larger than a walnut.

“We were advised to have a specialist look at the mass for further diagnosis, said Tammy. “We had a doctor ’s appointment for March 2.”

However, before Samantha could be seen, she had trouble breathing and a fever again.

Her mother said she brought Samantha back to the emergency room where a biopsy was done on the mass, confirming a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which shocked Samantha and her mother.

“I thought I had a cold. I was totally surprised,” said Samantha.

“She’s always had good health; she’s only 21,” said Tammy.

Samantha had a CAT scan, in which more masses were found in her brain and under both armpits.

Radiation treatment was ruled out because of possible side effects, said Tammy, and Samantha was referred to a specialist at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt., who put Samantha on a regimen of shots to put her through early menopause. The process will stop Samantha’s body from producing eggs, so the cancer wouldn’t attach itself to her ovaries, though could leave her unable to get pregnant in the future.

“We are fortunate she said. If she wouldn’t have gone to the ER when she did, it could have spread further,” said Tammy.

“Hopefully when the treatments are done, she’ll be back to normal and we can look forward to having grandchildren.”

Samantha’s prognosis is good, but her doctor says “no case is the same,” said Tammy.

“I’m going to beat this,” said Samantha.

Family and friends have already come together to help Samantha and her mother with expenses they’ve incurred in connection to Samantha’s treatments. The next, planned by Samantha’s aunt, Julie Sharron, is an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1466, 327 Spellman Road, Beekmantown, next Saturday, April 23. The dinner will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. and cost $10.

Regardless of the stance of city officials, Taber said he’ll welcome Girls Gone Wild and the business that he expects will follow.

“The fundraisers we’ve done, charities we’ve donated to, all the organizations we’ve helped, and this is what catches the most attention right out the gate,” said Taber. “The fact is, we have to be as creative as we can with the knowledge we have of this business.”

Reservation to build diabetes facility AKWESASNE— A $600,000 federal grant will be used to build a treatment center for diabetes on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. “The new facility will provide a wellness center for tribal members who are diabetic or at various stages of risk to become diabetic,” according to a press release provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the organization which awarded the grant. “This fully accessible, educational setting will target the prevention of diabetes and diabetic complications such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease.”

Franklin County considers bed tax MALONE — Legislators in Franklin County have assigned a committee to investigate the creation of a bed tax. Local Republican and Democratic representatives will join with the chamber of commerce to create a plan based on the tax Clinton County has in place.

Missing Saranac Lake man found dead SARANAC LAKE — Gary Sklaryk, who had been missing since Jan. 2, has been found dead.

Sklaryk, 55, who was reported to have had mental health problems, was last seen alive at his home on Ampersand Avenue. Sue Goldsmith, a Keene Street resident, discovered the man’s body on April 10 in her backyard as she went to empty her garbage.

There was no connection between Sklaryk and Goldsmith. Police don’t suspect foul play, though the investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.

Local poet and novelist win awards KEENE — Writers Chase Twitchell and her husband Russell Banks, both of Keene, have both recently won significant acclaim for their literary work. Twitchell recieved the Kingsley Tufts Award, a prestigious poetry award that comes with a $100,000 prize. Banks, the author of a number of novels which have been turned into feature films, won the Commonwealth Writer ’s Award for literature, which comes with a $50,000 prize.

Carol Calabrese, co-executive director of the Essex County IDA, said the Moriah meeting was in response to questions about the Laurentian project.

“We’ve received a lot of inquiries about potential job opportunities,” she said, “in particular, the Laurentian project.”

“The goal of the meeting is to provide Essex County residents with upcoming employment and training opportunities available,” said Jody Olcott, Essex County IDA co-executive director, “largely from the newly-announced Laurentian project in Plattsburgh.”

Several people attending the session expressed interest in the Laurentian jobs, but declined to comment. They currently have jobs, but were curious about new opportunities.

Laurentian Aerospace Corporation announced this month it has completed financial arrangements and will soon begin work on its project at the Plattsburgh International Airport.

Robin Wohnsigl, president and chief executive officer of Laurentian Aerospace said, “Work will begin immediately on various aspects of the project including the design and development work which, actually, has been in process now for a few weeks. Robson Woese and Cianbro Corporation will now move forward with details required to start construction at the Plattsburgh International Airport in late April 2011.”

Cut-a-thon to help Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Proceeds to benefit Team in Training April 23 PLATTSBURGH — The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in conjunction with Team in Training volunteer Bec Meyer will host a Hair Cut-A-Thon fundraising event Saturday, April 23, to benefit the LLS in front of J.C. Penney at Champlain Centre, 60 Smithfield Blvd.

Haircuts will be given between 9:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. for a $10 donation per person. All funds raised will help advance LLS’s mission of funding leading-edge medical research, patient assistance programs, community outreach and education programs and advocacy for legislation.

Team In Training is a fundraising program established by LLS. Participants in

the Team in Training program train for endurance events, including marathons, century rides, and triathlons like the Mooseman Triathlon that Meyer will participate in. TNT volunteers train in honor of a local blood cancer patient whose struggles inspire and motivate. In return, participants raise funds for lifesaving research and bring hope to the nearly one million people battling blood cancers.

“Along with the Team in Training program, this event will raise funds to help patients live longer, better lives,” said Meyer. “The need is critical and must be a priority.”

Floor resolutions concern Scozzafava

A resolution to add payroll for a parttime member of the County Treasurer ’s office to help file the annual report to the state and to help fund the new Wilmington road race drew the ire of Moriah Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava.

“Quite frankly there should have been more discussion on this through committee,” Scozzafava said about the resolution to issue a permit for the use of county roads for the upcoming Wilmington bicycle road race and $6,000 in funding to help promote the event. “These resolutions that appear in the 11th hour at a full board meeting, that come right out of the blue, we have to start getting a handle on that too. Other CYC projects include working with the school to introduce evening open hours and an offer to the Village of Lake Placid to fund the acquisition and training of a drug detection dog for the Police Department.

News of the Week Small grains trials support agricultural economy, local foods production WILLSBORO — North Country farmers, bakers, and business owners interested in local, heritage and organic foods are reaping the benefits of research conducted at the 352-acre Cornell University E.V. Baker Agricultural Research Farm located along the Lake Champlain shoreline in Willsboro, NY. Northern New York Agricultural Development Program 2009-2010 Small Grains and Food-Grade Soybeans Variety Trial report data recently posted online and available from Cornell Cooperative Extension offices identifies crops well-adapted to regional growing conditions and processors’ specifications.

“The buy-local, heritage, organically-grown food movement has created increased interest by millers, bakers and consumers in regionally-grown and regionally-processed heritage wheat and food-grade soybeans,” said Baker Farm manager Michael H. Davis. “Finding varieties with solid agronomic characteristics that are well-adapted to the Northern New York regional growing conditions is an essential step toward a profitable cropping season.”

The report in the Field Crops section of the www.nnyagdev.org website includes results for 21 spring wheat varieties, 15 winter wheat varieties, 11 heritage wheat and nine modern wheat varieties, seven emmer wheat varieties, and 22 commerciallyavailable food-grade soybean varieties.

Elizabeth Dyck, Coordinator of the Organic Growers’ Research and Information-Sharing Network (www.ogrin.org) noted Northern New York was once known for high-quality wheat production and says the research managed by Davis is “making a real contribution to reviving this tradition in the region.”

Davis partnered with Dyck to evaluate several heritage varieties of winter wheat and the ancient grain emmer at the Baker Farm. The heritage varieties, grown in the Northeast 80 to 130 years ago, were obtained from Dr. Mark Sorrells’ breeding program at Cornell University. Steven Zwinger of North Dakota State University supplied spring emmer wheat varieties for trial.

“Several heritage wheat varieties have shown distinctive taste and excellent baking qualities. Emmer, also known as faro, is in increasing demand by consumers for its delicious taste as a cooked grain and in flat breads and pasta. The Northern New York trials at the Baker Farm provide invaluable information to farmers on which of these potentially high-value varieties to grow and how to manage them,” Dyck says.

Champlain Valley Milling in Westport, produces “all-New York” whole wheat and white flours. It uses wheat, including one ancient variety, grown in Northern New York.

“The on-farm research carried out in Northern New York is a critical component in developing a high quality and steady supply of wheat for processing into flour for commercial and consumer bakers,” said owner Sam Sherman. The challenge is to get everyone growing the same variety for consistency.”

Davis said the multiple-year trials at the Baker Farm allow for evaluation of the best growing practices, such as tilling and soil fertility, as well as testing for high-quality yield potential for the various crops under a variety of weather conditions.

PERU — Elmore SPCA continues to receive support from the local community during their renovation process, according to members of the non profit organization’s board of directors.

According to board president Inger Joy, in 2007, animals had to be removed from the former Elmore SPCA facility on Telegraph street, consequent of its dire need for repairs.

“In the old facility, the heating system was inefficient, the wiring outdated and hazardous, the septic was in need of replacement, and the building was riddled with mice,” said Joy. The shelter was moved to Arthur Road and, since then, extensive renovations have been initiated to address the buildings issues, as well as the needs of its employees and sheltered animals. The focus of the reno-

vations has largely been centered on energy efficiency and quality animal care.

“Funds for operating expenses are always in short supply, so any cost saving measure that can be integrated into the shelter renovations will allow us to put those savings back into the care of our animals,” said Joy. Elmore SPCA has received much community support in their two-year endeavor to return the shelter animals to a new and improved facility.

Initially, volunteers from the Elmore Moriah Shock Camp gutted the building, while local volunteers such as Arnie Miller, Jim Jacobs, Joe Girardi, and Ed Gove worked on interior partitions.

Following these improvements, monetary donations have been received from the Constance De Savio Trust Fund, as well as the Morrisonville Elementary School, which organ-

ized a coin drive raising $1,700.

Building supplies, and material discounts were also generously donated by local businesses such as Glidden Paint, Champlain Valley Electric, Merit Contracting, and Aird Dorrance.

Local architect George Rosenvold donated the shelter design, while a CV-Tec building student donated interior blueprints.

Additional construction work on the building is slotted for the first two weeks in May, through the help of Solid Foundations, a Clinton Community College program.

Joy stated the board’s appreciation for the support, but noted much more is needed.

“We are encouraging other schools and school organizations to take up the challenge to raise money for the shelter renovations,” she said.

The Telegraph street facility still needs a new electrical and heating system, septic system,

and larger kennels.

“Many of our kennels are over 40 years old,” exclaimed Joy. According to Joy, Elmore SPCA is an integral element of the community, caring for abandoned, abused and sickly animals, educating the public about animal care, and maintaining the stray population.

Thus, many volunteers are motivated by a desire to facilitate the SPCA. “Many of these people not only have a deep love of animals, they also understand the importance of what we do to help homeless, abused, and neglected companion animals in need, said Joy. Easter baskets to help Elmore

PERU — Vickie J. Trombley has been known as a true goodwill ambassador, demonstrating her compassion for animals at the Elmore SPCA shelter, and Eastertime is no different.

The Au Sable Forks woman is known by many for driving a van decorated as a sleigh during the Christmas season, arriving at the shelter with a variety of pet food, toys, new collars, leashes, and a bounty of other pet supplies. However, her work doesn’t stop there.

Before Christmas, Trombley spends her time during the year securing donations from family, friends and businesses in Plattsburgh, Peru and Au Sable Forks. She even places coin banks throughout her home community as well as Keeseville, Jay and Wilmington, all in the name of helping Elmore SPCA. During this time of year, though, she is known for arranging Easter baskets she raffles to benefit the shelter. The baskets — designed for boys and girls ages 3 through 8 — are filled with items such as coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals, dolls, card games, and candy.

“Through her on-going efforts, she has greatly helped homeless animals, provided needed monetary donations to the shelter, and has made many friends among the SPCA board of directors and staff,” said Carol M. Solari-Ruscoe, secretary of the board of di-

rectors. “I think the world of her.”

The motivation Trombley has to help other animals stems from the love she has for her cat, Buddy, a rescue animal who was one day seriously injured. Though Buddy is fine today, that’s when Trombley realized just how much an impact Buddy had on her life, she said.

“I never want anyone else to feel what I felt that day,” Trombley said as she was tearing up and choking back her emotions in a different voice than moments before. “He

needed me and I had to make sure he survived it and he did, so I promised if he made it through, I would help other animals.”

Trombley’s Easter baskets are being raffled at local Grand Union locations and Stewart’s Shops in Peru. Currently, there are 16 baskets to be raffled.

Square Foot Garden applications due April 20 PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension is sponsoring 10 Square Foot Garden projects this year, with any educational or non-profit organization able to apply. Participants will receive all materials, including plants, for construction of a 4 ft. by 4 ft. garden. They will also receive technical assistance for their project from a volunteer with a Master Gardener Program to advise them in planning, planting and caring for their garden. The actual care of the garden must be done by the participants.

The advantages of a concentrated, raised bed for gardening are many. Weeds have little room to take hold an are easy to pull out, water is conserved by being used in a concentrated space, plant roots thrive in the improved soil contained in the raised bed, and this garden can be installed right on top of an existing lawn, with just a thick layer of newspaper beneath to smother the grass. Many people find the slightly raised garden easier to work around and the garden can be raised even higher to allow wheelchair access if necessary.

Funding for this project is provided by the Chapel Hill Foundation. Applications are due by Wednesday, April 20.

Kindergarten registration April 28 CHAZY — Kindergarten registration will be held at Chazy Central Rural School, 609 Miner Farm Road, Thursday, April 28, in the school’s auditorium.

Registration papers will be checked between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., with the program to begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Registration is expected to wrap up at 10 a.m.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2011, will be eligible to register for the September kindergarten class. Those planning to enter their child in September, should bring their child’s original birth certificate or other legal proof of age, as required by New York State law.

It is advised children not accompany their parents or guardians during the registration as a parent orientation program is planned. A time will be scheduled in June to bring children to visit the school and meet their teacher.

Registration papers will be sent to eligible families by March 28. Those who do not should call 846-7212.

Search, rescue organization gets boost from Stewart’s

KEESEVILLE — The Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K9 Unit has been named a $200 grant recipient from the Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match program.

Champlain Valley Search and Rescue was one of numerous organizations that applied for the grant during the 2010 holiday application period. In order to qualify, organizations had to be tax-exempt under IRS section 501(c)(3). The funding is made possible annually by donations from Stewart’s Shops customers which are matched by the corporation.

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of goodwill from Stewart’s customers,” said Shannon Bressett, cofounder of Champlain Valley Search and Rescue. “This way people here in our local area can see where their donations went and how it is being used. We look forward to teaching more children how to be safe and stay safe when out exploring their world.”

The funds will be used for educational programs provided by the K9 unit for children 18 years and younger.

Community garden group expands offering this year

PLATTSBURGH — There’s new life being breathed into an old garden thanks to the support of the Plattsburgh Community Garden Group and one local business.

Through a collaboration between the green-thumbed, grassroots gardening group and Hulbert Bros.

Supply Company, a second location for the Plattsburgh Community Garden is sprouting up on State Route 3, adjacent to the Plattsburgh Hulbert Bros. location.

Allison Hubert-Bruce, showroom manager for the Plattsburgh location, said she approached PCGG chairman Doug Butdorf after hearing about the group’s efforts to get more people interested in growing foods locally. Her grandmother, the late Mary Hulbert, had lived next

door and gardened in a spot between the two properties for several years until she passed away in 2003. The garden not only produced many foods, but many memories for Hulbert-Bruce and Hulbert’s other family members as well.

“I still remember coming out of work at night and visiting with her while she was gardening,” said Hulbert-Bruce.

there for years and years,” said Butdorf. “We’d like to see at least some of the success that she saw.”

“We’re really excited just to have it used again,” said Hulbert-Bruce.

“Gardening is something that was very important to my grandparents and still is to my parents as well as the rest of our family. We all grew up around gardening. It’ll be great to come out of work at night and see people working up there again.”

The PCGG will hold a lottery assignment for first-time gardeners who apply for a plot in either allotment-style community garden. The drawing will be held this Saturday, April 16, at the Every Day Earth Day Celebration at the Plattsburgh Crafters and Farmers Market Pavilion on Durkee Street, beginning at 12 p.m. The event will also include a seed swap in which growers may exchange seeds to diversify their

gardens.

Information booths sponsored by the PCGG, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Cook and Gardener will be among those to also help novice gardeners.

Man arrested for intoxication DANNEMORA — Herman H. Gillette Jr.,45, Standish was arrested March 31, having reportedly passed out drunk in a strangers huntingcamp.

Gilette was reported by Plattsburghbased State Police as combative, and having resisted arrest.

He was charged with third-degree burglary, resisting arrest, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and felony driving while intoxicated.

Gillette was sent to Clinton County Jail without bail, following his arraignment in Saranac Town Court.

O'Daniel is mandated to register as a sex offender, and to observe 15 years of post-release supervision as well as refraining from having any contact with the victim.

Among O'Daniel's charges were two counts of first-degree rape for repeatedly raping, fondling and attempting to rape the girl in 2006.

Celebrating a ‘Sonny’ life Friends, family gather to remember, help with expenses

PERU — Ernest “Sonny” A. Parent Jr. is gone, but not forgotten.

Friends and family met in a celebration of Parent’s life at Murphy’s Tavern Feb. 26. Parent, who passed away Feb. 8 at the age of 65 after an eight-month battle with cancer, was acknowledged by many present as a joyful and energetic individual.

“He was always happy. He always put a smile on my face,” said

his sister, Marianne Garrow.

In addition to his pleasant demeanor, Parent was noted by many as fun-loving, an avid hiker, snowmobiler, and motorcycle and race car driver.

“You know what we’re really going to miss about Sonny? Riding that motorcycle,” mused Garrow.

Those present participated in the many fundraising activities organized to fund medical and funeral expenses. The event wasn’t a somber one, however. Among the activities was a dart tournament and children’s face painting, which came as no surprise to Parent’s niece, Stacy Snider.

“I figured there’d be kids, Uncle Sonny loved kids,” she said.

Pearl Provost, parent’s longtime companion, thankfully acknowledged the local donations present.

“A lot of people donated,” she said.

Despite the evident generosity and local support, Parent’s family still lacks much of the funding needed to cover his medical and funeral expenses. Donations in any form are being accepted.

“Anything will help,” said Garrow.

Let me out the door, please!

O ver the course of a long academic career, recess was my favorite class. I would’ve majored in it, if I could’ve. From an early age, I was always more interested in matters outside the windows, than in matters inside the classroom.

In our school, recess was nearly always conducted outside. It was freedom in the fresh air with an opportunity to achieve the dirty shoes and grass-stained pants to prove it.

If you didn’t get dirty, you weren’t really having any fun.

Recess provided a reprieve from the monotony of the classroom. It offered relief and recovery from the boring subjects, but afterward, the math and science always seemed easier to swallow.

Research now indicates that recess was actually good for my academic achievement. Studies show that the best way to improve a child’s performance in the classroom, may be by removing them from it.

A recent study suggests that play time may actually be as important to academic achievement as reading, writing and arithmetic. Research indicates that regular recess, fitness or nature time can influence classroom behavior, concentration and even grades.

Published in the Journal of Pediatrics, a new study considers links between recess and classroom behavior among about 11,000 school children ages 8 and 9. Results indicate that children who had more than 15 minutes of recess a day exhibited better behavior in the classroom, than

Yet natural settings, which appear to activate involuntary attention, give the brain’s directed attention an opportunity to rest. At the same time, these opportunities also teach children how to direct their attention in a natural manner.

Directed attention requires our concentration, while involuntary attention, also known as fascination; grabs us and commands our attention. It is relaxing and does not result in attentional fatigue. Researchers believe that natural settings are particularly effective in restoring attention span and reducing attention fatigue.

Of course, those of us who are regularly fascinated by nature, already knew this fact. We worked on the topic regularly through the classroom windows, and we were always the first ones out the door, to study it during recess.

CHAZY — The Chazy varsity softball team is ready to take to the field and compete for an MVAC title.

“This crew of girls is highly motivated and enthusiastic about the season,” head coach Liz Garrand said. “As a modified team, they played very well together and they are happy to be reunited. We have set our goals and are ready to work hard at making Chazy known for its solid softball team.”

The Eagles will boast eight returning players to the squad along with six new members that Garrand said are “strong.”

“We are ready to make this year one to remember,” Garrand said. “Our pitching from Emily Keable is sure to be a game maker.

With the support of her friend and catcher Emily LaPierre we have a good base to start with. We are also returning our shortstop Astrid Kempainen and second baseman Kirsten Doran. Some shifting in the field will bring some veteran and new athletes to light as well.”

CHAMPLAIN — Northeastern Clinton varsity softball head coach Gretchen Rabideau said that the season will come down to the play she receives from her ace.

“One strength lies in our pitcher, Megan Boumil,” Rabideau said. “As a third year player, she has consistently brought herself up in the ranks of pitching and is ready to be the primary pitcher for our team.”

Rabideau also said that she is expecting a lot from a team that features 10 players.

“Even though we are small in numbers, this group of young players is dedicated to building a strong team dynamic and working together,” she said.

Along with Boumil, Rabideau is also expecting to get key contributions from the offense to keep pace with a 14-3 2010 result.

“Third year returning junior Bianca Grimshaw is moving over to short stop from second base,” she said. “We are looking to positive additions in newcomers junior Vada Loya and sophomore Emily Boyer in the infield.“ Felicia Lapan and Courtney Marks are seniors on the roster along with Boumil, and are joined by junior Bianca Grimshaw and sophomores Krista Connelly, Jen Favro and Amanda Harvey.

“Our season will be successful when we function as a flourishing softball team that succeeds because of the team’s work ethic,” Rabideau said. “Our captains (Boumil, Marks and Grimshaw) will need to help the underclassman rise to the occasion of playing a varsity sport.”

2011 NCCS track and field Roster

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton varsity boys and girls tennis teams will return several players to the 2011 squad from teams that went 5-3 (boys) and 7-1 (girls) last season.

“Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have a fair amount of experience and depth in both singles and doubles,” head coach Dan Gallagher said.

“For the girls’ team, Alanna Cruz, Paige Southwick, Kristin Langr hope to build on the success they had last year, while I think that they can expect some solid support from veterans Erica Sorrell, Lacie Hogle, Tori Duprey and Allie Cartier.

“For the boys, Richie Collins and Ryan Marks hope to fair well in singles play while Bobby Marks, Adam Jennett and McKenna Hunter should be solid in singles and doubles,” Gallagher added.

Gallagher said that he believes the season could be competitive throughout the league, and that his teams have the chance to be right there in the CVAC standings.

“It is difficult to predict exactly how successful we can be because I don’t know at this point how strong some of the other teams in the league are,” he said. “However, I do I believe both teams have a good chance at having winning seasons.”

PERU — A solid core of returning players and a stout defense should keep the Peru varsity softball team in the hunt for a trip deep into the playoffs in 2011.

ELLENBURG DEPOT — The Northern Adirondack varsity softball team will have several familiar faces on the 2011 roster.

“We have many players returning that should help our chances of being competitive,” head coach Tim Drollette said. “We have a good bunch of players that seem to be great cage hitters and are able to field the nice hops that the gym floor produces.”

The Bobcats did lose four players to graduation, including Kayla Rabideau, Katie Hemmingway, Brooke Brunnell and Chelcie Trombley, from a team that finished with a 6-12 record a year ago.

Returning to the squad are Emily Garrand, Brittany Charland, Bethany Drown, Shauna Perry, Nicole Durnin and Jesslin Golovach.

First-year players include Kirstie Bovia, Amanda Campbell, Madison LeClair, Allison Seymour, Elle Warick and Maegan Brunelle.

P E R U — Wi t h o n l y o n e n a m e n o t re turning for the 2011 golf season, the Peru varsity squad is looking to improve with basically the same squad.

“We lost no one to graduation,” head coach Tom Harriga said. “Having a very young team and building the program the last few years, I believe we have the experience to win more matches.”

The Indians are looking to improve on

a 1-8 2010 campaign.

“We are still considered a young team,” Harriga said.

Five of the six projected starters are underclassmen, with senior Bobby Wilkins joined by junior Ian Fisher, junior Nate Haber and freshmen Christian Mattilla, Jacob Dick and Matt Nugent.

Returning players also include senior Tyler Langley and freshmen Noah Haber, Tyler Lemza and Kyle Donaghue.

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton varsity golf team is going to need help from its younger players to be competitive in 2011.

“I am looking to some of the young players like Alex Duffy, Christopher Kokes, Kyle Sebert, and Zachary Guay to build on some of the experience they got last year to help the team succeed this season,” head coach Matthew Fredette said. “Bobbie Dietsche and Nolan Reid have the most experience on the team and I will look to them to continue their strong play from last season into 2011.“ The Cougars finished the season at 4-6 in 2010, and are assisted by Dave Kokes.

Bruce to run in Boston Marathon

PORT HENRY — David V. Bruce, a 69year-old native of Port Henry, will compete in the Boston Marathon April 18.

He said achieving a qualifying time, which is determined by a racer ’s age and gender, felt terrific.

“It gives you a feeling of achievement, a feeling of being able to do something you wanted to do for a long time,” Bruce said.

He said he wanted to qualify for the Boston Marathon for some time but was unable to dedicate sufficient energy to it because of other commitments.

“I had started running 25 years ago and this was a goal that I had,” Bruce said. “I was working full-time and as a result I didn’t have the extra time to really run the way I wanted to or thought I could.”

Now training continuously, he runs between 40 and 50 miles a week. Bruce said his athleticism was motivated by a desire for the health benefits which accompany an active lifestyle.

“I’m nearly 70 years old,” Bruce said. “I do not want to find myself sitting in a nursing home because I missed the opportunity to maintain my health through running.”

Bruce said he wanted to run the Boston Marathon in honor of two recently deceased local residents: Barbara Armstrong of Moriah and Anthony Morette of Ticonderoga.

Both runners, Armstrong succumbed to cancer in 2009 and Morette was killed in a hitand-run accident the same year.

Half-marathon registration full PLATTSBURGH — The second annual City of Plattsburgh Half-Marathon is no longer accepting participants.

The 13.1-mile race reached its limit of 1,000 registrants. However, volunteers are still needed.

Peru baseball team looks for depth to help in CVAC

keith@denpubs.com PERU — The Peru varsity baseball team will look for a full team effort in 2011.

I feel that the strength of the Peru Indians this year will be our depth,” head coach Brian Marino said. “We have 13 players who can be put on the field at any time and contribute in many ways.”

The team will look to continue to improve throughout the season and on a 4-13 overall record in 2010.

“I am looking to go out each and every day and work hard on the baseball field,” Marino said. “If we work hard, we will be competitive in the CVAC race.”
