Clinton County ARC opens new respite house

PLATTSBURGH — The Advocacy and Resource Center of Clinton County has opened the doors to its second respite house.

The opening of the house, located on Salmon River Road, was officially marked March 25.

Clinton County ARC executive director Theresa M. Garrow explained the house provides temporary care on weekends by highly-trained professionals for individuals with developmental disabilities. And, it’s in a building that’s seen quite an evolution over the years, said Garrow.

Syrup, squares good together for 40 years

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — What began as a way to raise funds for the North Country Squares building, now continues into its 40th year.

In 1970, Bob West, a square dancer with the North Country Squares in Morrisonville, proposed an idea to his friend Benjamin Sanger of serving pancakes at Sanger ’s Sugar House. “[The North Country Squares] were talking about a strawberry festival in the spring, and I don’t know, it was just an idea I’ve always had — have pancakes at a sugar house,” explained West. “So, I went out to see Ben and he thought it was a good idea and we went from there.”

Since then, the square dance group has served pancakes and sausage with syrup provided by the Sangers every year to keep raising funds.

“When we first started it, we started it to raise money to build [the square dance building at the Clinton County Fairgrounds],” West explained. “Now that the building is built, we need to keep raising money to support the building.”

West said the club is not what it was 40 years ago.

“There’s not as many members,” he explained. “We used to have a lot of guests from Canada come over. The membership that we paid and the guests that came, used to basically support the cost for callers and cuers.”

However, with the dip in membership, West said the open house is their largest fundraiser and is important to the keeping the club in operation.

The event — which will be held this Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — is something people look forward to every year, said Kim Sanger, who today serves as

co-owner of Sanger ’s Sugar House with her husband, Lee. “They’re parents brought them when they were little kids,” she said. “They’re now bringing their little kids.”

Although the Sangers will take people on tours of the sugar house and answer any questions they may have, Sanger said that’s not the main focus of the weekend.

“It’s primarily eating is what people are interested in,” she laughed. “It’s kind of a rite of spring.”

The Sangers provide all the syrup for the North Country Squares — which is usually about 45 gallons — and the club, in turn, provides all the food and receives 100 percent of the proceeds.

“I just picked up 570 pounds of sausage tonight,” West said. “We’ll pick up 550 pounds of flour Thursday. So, we’ll be ready for them Saturday.”

Admission to the event is $6.50 for adults, $3 for children younger than 12, and free for children younger than 5.

Sanger ’s Sugar House is located at 137 Stratton Hill Road.

Spring cleaning: part two The causes of memory loss

I

n part two of springcleaning the PC, we look at cleaning the software. Activities include removing unused programs, cleaning out the temp files, scanning the file system and checking updates.

Removing unwanted programs used to be pretty important due to the space they took up on the hard drive.

Computers today have loads of hard drive space so space is less of an issue. But if the program starts automatically when Windows starts up and you never use it, why keep it around? Go into the Control Panel, find the option to remove programs, go through the list and remove things you are not using.

Next thing to do is to run the Disk Cleanup program which guides the user through the removal of temporary files.

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup. Follow through the prompts to remove unnecessary files.

With unnecessary files gone, we can scan C: for disk errors. Do this by opening My Computer, right-clicking the C: drive and selecting properties. Select the Tools tab then click the “Check Now” button within

Error-checking.

Select both options within Check Disk and know that Windows is usually unable to do this right away because C: is in use. Schedule it to run, reboot the system and be patient as the procedure runs.

Running the disk defragmenter program is analogous to straightening out the filing cabinet. Click Start, All Programs, AccesBy Ron Poland sories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter. Select the option to analyze and go from there.

Lastly, check the status of all updates to ensure Windows and supporting utilities like malware programs are running properly. This type of maintenance doesn’t have to wait until spring each year. Keep the system up on a monthly basis and the odds all better of the reward of better service.

Vitamin B12 deficiency — According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University, as much as 10 percent of nonAlzheimer ’s related memory loss can be attributed to vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 is found in meat, fish, and eggs.

Thyroid disease — Too many or too few thyroid hormones can affect memory. A physician can perform a test to see where thyroid levels are at.

Mini-strokes — Mini-strokes can occur without anyone being aware, resulting in minor memory loss. Frequently occurring ministrokes can cause permanent memory loss. A healthcare professional can help determine if mini-strokes have occurred in the past.

ost people assume as we age we begin to experience memory problems, usually as the result of Alzheimer ’s disease or some sort of dementia.

This is one of the most common myths of aging. Memory loss can have a number of causes that are not related to the process of getting older.

These causes include: Depression — Depression can deplete the chemicals in the hippocampus of the brain, which is where information is stored. Depression can also present with appetite loss, mood swings, and changes in sleep patterns.

Speak with your loved one’s healthcare professional if you think they are experiencing depression.

Stress — Is your loved one experiencing high levels of stress, perhaps because of diminished abilities? Care receivers can be just as susceptible to stress as caregivers. Relaxation exercises, like deep breathing, could benefit you both.

Poor sleep — Sleep gives our body a chance to repair and re-charge. Inadequate sleep, over a period of time, can greatly diminish cognitive abilities. Does the person in your care have sleep apnea? Are they on medications that cause insomnia? Are you

Spring gardening ideas

Using the diatonic scale

he unusually warm spring weather we have had recently really gives avid gardeners spring fever.

We want to be out in the gardens tending to our favorite flowers, vegetables, trees, and shrubs. If you are looking for an excuse to get into the garden, here are some great spring gardening ideas for your perennial beds.

In the early spring, after most of the snow melts and temperatures are mostly above freezing, remove winter protection such as evergreen boughs, or other types of coverings and winter mulches. Do so early in the spring because plants will begin growing under these covers. Perennials need the sun, and to be exposed to cooler temperatures, to be fully hardy.

Uncover too late, and they may be easily burned by the sun or injured by dips in the temperature. The mulches can stay on open parts of the perennial beds.

While you are out in the garden, look for plants heaved up by frost action.

These should be pressed back down into the ground. Before too many plants start

their spring growth, start your spring clean-up by removing dead, decaying plant matter. While it does provide organic matter to your beds, it can also harbor pests and diseases. So it’s best to remove this dead growth from last year, if you didn’t last fall. You can add fresh compost or mulch for additional organic matter.

Some perennials such as tickseed, shasta daisy, garden phlox, asters, and coneflowers have green rosettes at ground level that overwinter and need to be exposed.

Most perennials (such as perennial geranium, daylily, bee balm, and others) can be cut back almost to the ground, and they will regrow from there.

Lasty, it is never too early to weed.

Pulling up any weeds that have started to grow now, when the soil is moist, can really save you a lot of work later in the growing season!

The diatonic scale generates seven chords. Some songs have only one, two or, most often, three chords.

A good place to begin might be a three chord song.

Most of you know them from “Happy Birthday To You” and almost every fast rock and roll tune ever written.

The blues can have just three chords, but sometimes more.

Three chord tunes almost invariably have a “root chord,” which then moves to the 4 chord, then to the 5 chord and back to the 1 or root chord. In “La Bamba” and “Twist and Shout,” this becomes a pattern of 1, 4, 5, 4 played over and over. In country music there are usually two or four measures of each change. In the blues, all the chords are usually dominant.

This is obviously not a diatonic progression, is it? Well — yes and no.

What you will find is the chords are still 1, 4 and 5 chords but the major scale sounds terrible against them. If they’re all seventh chords, the scale predicts where the chords will fall to some extent but the scale is not a good device to create the appropriate harmony.

With proper study, the diatonic scale can serve as a launching point to get to virtually any type of music and aid in selecting the proper choice of notes for improvisation, harmonization and composition. In other words to find out what scale might go with what chord, as beginning musicians are always struggling to determine. When I personally started playing guitar, it was by ear or a friend showing me the riffs and chord progressions. The problem was I didn’t know the theory for the songs I was playing. Years later, when I first started studying music theory it opened up a whole new world of possibilities, especially with improvisation and songwriting.

Tip of the month Do not leave your instrument, any instrument, in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

This column will self destruct in t-minus three, two, one ...

I

am about to commit the unthinkable — the worst Cardinal Sin of any speckle trout fisherman: Divulge a few of my closely guarded secrets.

I therefore respectfully request that after reading the aforementioned classified information you commit it to memory, tear this column into tiny pieces and bury those pieces in the garden.

Okay, not really.

I wouldn’t want you blaming your dead vegetables on my feeble prose.

Actually I thought I’d share some of my time-honed practices in hopes they might help you hook that brookie of a lifetime — and then, more importantly, help avoid heartbreak when you do.

As in any outdoor pursuit, I’ve always been one to leave as little as possible to chance. Enough can go wrong on its own without adding the uncertainty of equipment malfunction to the equation.

For me, that means spotlessly clean equipment and constant attention to detail.

I keep both my hunting and fishing equipment as pristine as the day I purchased it and I never skimp on either. I buy the best, take care of it and it takes care of me.

I also sweat the small stuff. A chain is only

as good as its weakest link — so the smallest fray or burr in a line, a weakened snap swivel or a dull hook can mean the difference between putting a lunker in the boat or going home emptyhanded.

Okay, so enough jibbering- jabbering — here is how I do it (at least with spinning gear).

I run two light, fast-action 7-foot Orvis rods with ultralight Okuma reels spooled with 8-pound Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon line.

I like the longer rods because it allows the fish to fight the pole and not the line.

I’ve been a fan of fluorocarbon since its introduction a decade ago. It does not soak up water like traditional line, so it doesn’t stretch and knot strength is never compromised. It also has a high tensile strength and very low diameter. That means you can bump up to a higher weight line without sacrificing spool capacity or line maneuverability.

Also, the line always seems to run true as do lures attached to it and it definitely lives up to its name in the water — it vanishes, which I think has huge advantages for tempting a strike from a finicky trout.

While this setup has served me well, probably even more important than what is above the water is what’s below.

I am crazy retentive about my hooks and leaders.

I’ve found more fish either get missed or simply do not bite at all because of poorly designed trolling rigs than any other factor and I never run factory-built.

I also hate to waste time on the water, so I ready a number of leaders beforehand of varying length and tip each with different hooks and flies to change up the offering.

And, if you think I buy the best when it comes to equipment, that goes tenfold when it comes to the detail stuff like hooks and snaps.

I run SPRO ball bearing swivels with interlock snaps (yes, they are $1 apiece - but ball bearings are a fisherman’s best friend and they don’t come cheap). I tie one on my line, then another to the top of the leader. These snap together so I can easily run a lure between. Changing them out takes seconds.

From there I run about 8 inches of line to a SPRO ball bearing swivel. I’m a big fan of swivels, they allow the bait to run true be-

hind the lure and are key in landing a big brookie — as anyone that’s had a three pounder to the net can attest.

Then I finish it all up with about 10 more inches of line tied between the in-line swivel and a number 6 Gamakatsu baitholder hook that I hand tie to the leader.

Gamakatsu hooks, made of high carbon steel, are simply the sharpest hook on the market. Of course, I also carry a stone and sharpen my hook after every catch and run my hand over my leader checking for frays and burrs. Again, changing the leader out takes just seconds. I often do it a few times a day if the fish are hitting.

Lastly, I usually change my line out about every six trips or so, even sooner if its been stressed by a backcountry trip. My ultralights don’t require a ton of line, so this is relatively cheap insurance to avoid line breaks.

These tips may be no real revelation to veteran brookie fishermen, but for me, they have made the difference of putting fish in the net when others were not.

Strengthening core muscles

side from occasional sit-ups, core exercises are often neglected. Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen. Core exercises teach these muscles to work together in harmony, leading to better balance and stability — whether on the playing field or in daily activities.

Most physical activities depend on stable core muscles. Strong core muscles make it easier to do everything from swinging a golf club, to getting a glass from the top shelf or bending down to tie your shoes. Weak core muscles leave you susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries. You don’t need to spend hours a day to develop a strong core. Instead, concentrate on doing each exercise with correct technique and proper form. Gradually build up to 10 to 15 repetitions of each exercise. If you work your core muscles to fatigue during an exercise session, wait at least a day between workouts to give your muscles time to recover.

The nonprofit organization has been providing general medical services for Clinton County for the past14 years — the only mobile diagnostic and treatment clinic in the region.

Bonnie Yopp, a licensed nurse practitioner, has been involved with the organization since it started in 1996 and today serves as executive director. In that time, the “medical office on wheels that focuses on adult health,” as Yopp describes it, has seen many changes.

“We started with an old school bus that had been used for a medical clinic in Vermont,” recalled Yopp. “When you looked at it from the outside, it needed a hell of a lot of work.”

The organization’s board of directors invested the money and the mobile clinic was put into service. In fact, the bus served the community well until it was retired three years ago.

“Thanks to a generous grant through Excellus BlueCross, we got the RV we have now,” said Yopp. “We went from getting three or four miles on a gallon of gas to about 10 miles on a gallon.”

The upgrade saved the mobile clinic several dollars on its bottom line, helped it expand its territory. The clinic branched out from its regular stops in Clinton County — which include Plattsburgh, Peru, Saranac, Morrisonville, Keeseville, Mooers, Altona, Champlain and West Chazy — to places like Au Sable Forks in Essex County and even Burke in Franklin County.

As the economy has seen trouble in recent years, the need for Community Link Mobile Health’s services have only increased, said Yopp.

“As the economy gets worse, we get busier,” she said. “And, our main focus is to get anybody into health care that hasn’t been able to because they’ve lacked insurance. Two-thirds to three-quarters of our patients have no insurance.”

The cost of visiting the mobile clinic is typically less than that of a traditional doctor ’s office visit, she said.

“An office visit in Plattsburgh can cost anywhere from $65 to $120. Some people can’t afford that,” said Yopp. “Our office visit is only

$20. We take care of all those people out there who have stopped health care because they didn’t have insurance because they couldn’t afford it.”

The mobile clinic also has a prescription assistance program for those who have no prescription insurance to help them get their medications.

“We sit down with them and try to see if we can give them free or low-cost medications through the drug companies,” Yopp explained.

The cost of operating the mobile clinic is able to be kept down because Yopp is the only paid staff member, she said. The clinic relies on volunteers that range from those handling medical billing to legal work. Even the clinic’s medical director is a volunteer.

“That saves us thousands of dollars,” said Yopp. “Thank God for volunteers.”

However, the clinic also relies heavily on grants for which Yopp applies and support for fundraisers like their upcoming spring dinner.

“Big fundraisers like this help a lot,” said Yopp.

My journey to the half-marathon

By Martha Breyette pril 1 has come and I am celebrating my 40th birthday. My family and friends have been absolutely wonderful. I am indeed more fit than I was a year ago. I did 10 miles this past week and feel great! I never thought I could run this far, but if you put your mind to something and commit, it is amazing what you achieve. I am happy where I am in my life and have so much to be thankful for.

I started swimming this past week to add to my cross training.

I am now thinking once I complete the half-marathon I will look for other runs to compete in and maybe even a triathlon some day!

I still have a ways to go before race day, but I am well on my way.

The weather looks great this weekend so it will be great to run outside with the warmer weather. I really hope I can finish this half-marathon strong but more importantly I just want to finish so I can say that I made my goal.

Elizabeth Heins award nominations due April 16

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — If you ask Elli Collins, it takes a special woman to walk in the shoes of the late Elizabeth Heins.

“Elizabeth Heins was a very inspirational lady,” said Collins. “She was one of these vibrant kinds of people that you really like to be around.

And, no matter what, she was always just upbeat.”

Even when Heins was diagnosed with breast cancer, among other medical issues, in the mid-1980s, she never let her own challenges bring her down, said Collins.

“She had a number of medical problems but you wouldn’t know it because she always cared about other people first,” she said.

That’s why the Treasure Chests breast cancer support group, through CVPH Medical Center, established the Elizabeth Heins Inspirational Sur-

vivorship Award in 2005, following Heins’ death. The award, explained Collins, is given annually to a woman in honor of Heins, who battled several medical issues, including breast cancer.

Collins oversees the nomination process for the award and said there is basic criteria a committee reviews when choosing the next honoree.

“We look to see who is active with survivorship activities, who’s out in the community making a difference and impact on individuals,” she explained.

However, in an area where cancer is not an uncommon disease and people affected by it are increasingly looking for a way to turn their negative into a positive, Collins said potential nominees are everywhere.

“It’s hard because there are so many people who fit the criteria; there are so many people who are inspirational,” said Collins.

Gretchen “Libby” Goller of Champlain, a cancer survivor and past honoree, shrugs off any notion she’s inspirational.

Goller said she was just honored to be held in the same regard as her late friend.

“She was just one of my favorite people,” Goller said of Heins. “She was full of vim and vigor. Whatever challenge was thrown at her, she faced it with determination. She lived life to the fullest and for that, I admired her.”

“She was quite a gal and you’d certainly remember her if you met her,” she added.

If people stop to think about it, everyone probably knows someone like Heins, said Collins.

“They’re involved, they’re fun to be around, they get things done,” she said.

“They’re just upbeat, very caring and vivacious, with a zest for life.”

Nomination letters for this year ’s Elizabeth Heins Inspira-

tional Survivorship Award are due next Friday, April 16.

Those submitting nominations should consider how the person has been an inspiration to others, what personality traits she has that help her through life challenges, how she has been involved with survivorship activities, and if a cancer survivor has influenced her life.

Survey asks public to underscore importance of community libraries

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com The New York Library Association has started a Web site with the goal of bringing attention to the importance of the public library system.

The site, www.protectnylibraries.org, began in January with the hope of having libraries considered in the state’s budget.

“We’re hoping to gather data that will provide us additional information to share with

state legislators as they contemplate the state budget, and the information that we can gather will help boost our cause and demonstrate even further that libraries are essential,” explained NYLA executive director Michael J. Borges.

Information is being gathered through a survey on the Web site, which asks library patrons various questions about their use of their local library.

“If [patrons] believe that libraries are essential and an important part of their community, we’re hoping that they would take

the few seconds it takes to fill out the survey and provide the information that will help get further aid [and] prevent cuts to the library,” Borges said.

In January, Borges testified before a legislative budget hearing, and brought along two unemployed people who utilized libraries to search and apply for jobs.

“One person didn’t have Internet access at home and the other person had dial-up service, which was inadequate for downloading forms,” he explained. “More and more the majority of job listings nowadays are on-line

and I think 60 percent of employers require on-line applications.”

“Libraries are essential more-so during tough economic times because people need them to climb out of the economic stress that they’re in,” Borges explained.

After presenting the two unemployed people to the state legislator, he said he noticed “a lot of nodding of heads and I think it brought to their attention what libraries were doing.”

The survey is expected to be on-line through the end of April.

Tamarack Stables marks 15 years of horsing around

Fifteen years ago, Newton started Tamarack Stables, a business offering horseback riding lessons and equestrian boarding. The business started out small, but soon grew beyond Newton’s expectations.

“We built our original barn with 11 stalls and thought we’d never fill that and just have extra stalls,” said Newton.

However, Newton’s business soon grew and, today, Tamarack Stables is even expanding to include a new indoor riding arena. On the boarding side, her business also houses a combination of

“I never thought I’d have this many [animals],” said Newton.

On an average day, Newton can be found on her piece of rural landscape on outer Soper Street, caring for the animals and giving lessons. It’s a job that many days lasts from sunup to sundown.

“In the summer, it’s easily a 12-13 hour day, between feeding the animals, cleaning the stalls and getting them ready for night and giving lessons,” she aid.

What has kept Newton committed to her business, besides her love for horses, has been the people she’s met and the relationships she’s formed.

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — The drive to an animal shelter is one ride your dog won’t want to take and it’s one dog control officer Mark Plumadore tries to avoid.

“It can be pretty traumatic for an animal to be away from its owner, so I go out of my way to not put a dog in a shelter if I don’t have to,” said Plumadore, who has spent five years on the job for the town of Saranac.

“It’s just heartbreaking when you drop one off and they’re looking at you like you’re their last hope from being put in a cage.”

Plumadore said he’s consistently tried to reunite dogs with their owners prior to taking them to a shelter and now, his efforts are even more important. That’s because the town is now sending all stray dogs to the TriLakes Humane Society animal shelter in Saranac Lake. The town previously sent strays to the Elmore SPCA shelter in Peru, but recently made the decision to switch to the Saranac Lake shelter as a cost-savings measure, said Plumadore.

“This was about $1,400 less a year

“If they don’t, the dog is going to be vaccinated and the people are going to be billed for it,” he said.

Additionally, if a dog is not licensed, the owner will be required to pay for its licensing and any applicable shelter fees before it can be taken home.

Additional fees are something Plumadore tries to avoid. That’s another reason he will be performing a dog census this month, going door to door throughout the town to compile a list of licensed dogs for his records.

The census will also help Plumadore find unlicensed dogs. By law, dogs age four months and older must be licensed. The owners of those found not to be will receive a written warning, giving them 10 business days to have the animal li-
