It was a call to action.

“It’s a work of everybody,” said Leigh Simonette, civic committee co-chair and member of the Adirondack Young Professionals board of directors. “It starts at the grassroots levels and goes all the way up to the politicians.”

A panel of six people who represent businesses and politics in the area were on hand to share their visions, and to respond to questions and comments from the young professionals in attendance.

Spring Open Community Show brings in the crowd at ROTA

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH—ROTA Gallery was packed with energy and bathed in the light of the setting sun on Saturday, March 30.

Artists mingled with visitors, who came to see the 40 photographs, paintings and sculptures on display at the Spring Open Community Show.

“Thank you all for participating and viewing,” said Gallery Coordinator Kaitlyn Donovan to the gallery-goers. “We couldn't do this without all of you.”

One of the artists, photographer Jen Curran-Tuller, was on hand, and so were seven of her images.

It was the first time she has shown her work in public.

“Up until now, I’ve always just taken pictures and blown them up and given them to

family members,” she said.

Curran-Tuller grew up in Southern California and began taking photographs as a child.

She moved to the North Country about six years ago after meeting her future husband.

The changing seasons, something CurranTuller didn’t get to experience in Southern California, have inspired her, and she wants to begin capturing winter images next year.

Showing her work at ROTA has also inspired her.

“It’s nice to see what other people are doing, and to see how much talent is in this community,” Curran-Tuller said.

Sharing a wall with Curran-Tuller's picture of an autumn leaf suspended over a stream by a spiderweb is a piece by Katrina Rigsbee.

It is a painting of a woman, her dark skin a compliment to the warm red hues behind her.

Rigsbee created the image as part of a class she took at SUNY Potsdam, where she is a sophomore pursuing a fine arts degree.

Despite the detail in the subject's hair, eyes and skin tone, Rigsbee insisted that photography, not painting, is her real passion.

She even had a camera around her neck to prove it.

“I really love film and the whole process of developing,” Rigsbee said. “I especially love capturing the human form. I find it fascinating.”

The gallery was never quiet that evening—every time someone left someone else showed up to replace them—but the energy really picked up when open mic started at 6 p.m.

Open mic at ROTA is a little different than open mic at other venues—the gallery space is well-lit, there isn't a stage, and when someone begins, everyone listens.

Some performers played acoustic guitar and sang about life and society at large, while others recited poetry.

Abisola Majeed shared one of her poems, which is an untitled work that Majeed affectionately referred to as “Hey Alice.”

“I’m very shy, so this is a great opportunity,” Majeed said. “Everyone here is so talented and creative, and they’re sweet and open.

It’s a safe place for people to express their work.”

Majeed’s confession of shyness is a surprise—she delivered her work with certainty and grace, never faltering from the words on the page.

She has had some practice, and can often be found every other Thursday at ROTA’s open poetry night.

Her poetry focuses on human experiences, things many of us are familiar with.

“I think it’s easier to write when you have an experience that touches you,” Majeed said. “You have to write about what you know.”

Roadrunners heading to nationals

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH—The Plattsburgh Youth Hockey Roadrunners will be heading to Troy, Mich., to compete in the USA Hockey National Championship Tournament this weekend.

The Tier II Boys Midget Team earned its place in the championship after finishing second place in the USA Hockey NY District State Championships recently held in Buffalo.

“Our boys have accomplished something extraordinary which has never been done previously by a local boys youth hockey team,” said Coach Steve Gagnier in an email.

The state championship featured eight of the top teams from across New York.

The Roadrunners tied the top-ranked Nassau County Lions, 2-2, in the first game, scoring their final goal on a

penalty shot with only 0.4 seconds on the clock.

They suffered a 3-2 loss in the second game against Buffalo’s Clarence Mustangs, but went on to secure a 7-1 victory over the Long Island Rebels, which qualified them for a semifinal match against the Long Island Edge, with the Roadrunners scoring a 4-0 win.

Advancing to the finals, the Roadrunners were narrowly defeated 5-4 by Buffalo’s Cheektowaga Warriors in double overtime.

"We put this team together last fall to try and supplement the high school schedule and give these players some more quality games,” said Head Coach Keith Clark in a press release. “We knew we had quality players but never remotely anticipated being so close to the State Championship.”

Clay Classes for Kids at NCCA PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts will host clay classes for ages 5 to 14 in the areas of hand building and wheel work. Students will not only learn basic clay techniques; they will also be able to create pieces they can take home at the end of the session.

Jen Shutts will instruct children ages 5 to 9 to create both functional pottery and creative sculptures. The classes take place on Sundays, from April 7 through May 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $95 or $85 for Arts Center members, plus a $10 materials fee.

Kim Mazur will instruct the Kids’ Wheel class, for kids ages 10 to 14. Participants learn how to throw on a potter ’s wheel and create their own mugs, bowls, plates and shallow dishes. Classes are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sat-

They will compete against 39 other teams from across the United States.

The teams will be divided into three divisions, and the Roadrunners will be placed in the top bracket with 15 other teams.

The first three games will be held April 3,4 and 5, and the tournament quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Saturday, April 6. The National Championship game will be held April 7.

“What a great honor to be able to represent the New York District and northern New York in the National Tournament,” Clark said. “We will go with the attitude of enjoying the experience and competing hard.”

Rough road video a winner

own of Newcomb officials are cautiously optimistic that their attempt to shame New York state into fixing Route 28N earlier than planned has succeeded in getting the Department of Transportation’s attention.

And we are, too.

A day after Newcomb Planning Board member Paul Hai released a YouTube video highlighting the poor condition of Route 28N on Thursday, March 28, DOT Director of Communications Beau Duffy released an official statement: “Route 28N is a critical part of the North Country’s infrastructure that is in need of repair. Ensuring that the road is well maintained is critically important to our efforts to increase tourism to the area and showcase the jewel that is the Adirondack Park. More importantly, however, local residents simply should not have to put up with substandard and potentially dangerous road conditions.

At the direction of Governor Cuomo and Commissioner McDonald, repairs to 28N will take place on an expedited basis, commencing in the coming weeks.”

Wow. The little town of Newcomb — population 436 in the most remote section of the state — stood up to the goliaths in Albany and won.

Newcomb Town Supervisor George Canon was supposed to meet with DOT officials in May about repairing State Route 28N. But after the video was released in the media — on the Facebook page of the News Enterprise, the Times Union’s Capital Confidential blog, and other websites — Canon received a phone call from the DOT to expedite the meeting, which took place Tuesday afternoon, April 2, at Canon’s office.

DOT Region 1 (Capital District) Acting Regional Director Sam Zhou had to drive on Route 28N to get to the Newcomb Town Hall. We hope he also drove to Long Lake, where the worst section is located.

Newcomb officials initiated a letterwriting campaign but received a reply that was less than helpful: “Only 1.5 miles of Route 28N meet the criteria for a major rehab project.”

That prompted a response from Paul Hai in the video: “Which 1.5 miles do you suppose it is?”

After all, the DOT has signs on Route

28N stating “Rough Road” for 13 miles.

So is it 1.5 miles or 13 miles?

The letter-writing campaign wasn’t enough to move the DOT into fixing Route 28N, which hasn’t been reconstructed since 1979 (gas prices at 90 cents/gallon).

But one quirky, clever and direct video — with 6:42 minutes of interviews, information and slapstick — won the day, thanks to attention from traditional and social media.

We think Newcomb framed the argument correctly. Hai interviewed motorists in Long Lake, highway officials, and the town supervisors in Newcomb and Long Lake. Aside from the obvious safety issues and damage to vehicles, Hai reminded viewers that the state of New York is spending millions of dollars buying 69,000 acres of former Finch, Pruyn land to add it to the Forest Preserve. And much of that land — particularly around the Boreas Ponds — is located in Newcomb.

In the video, Long Lake Supervisor Clark Seaman said people may not return to Newcomb once seeing the newly acquired lands. Canon said people may just stay away completely.

“There’s other places to go,” Canon said. “And if you’ve got a choice, you’re not going to bang your car all to pieces, so I’m hoping that the governor understands that this is a big deal for us.”

We do, too.

Newcomb is on the front lines of the Forest Preserve experiment in the Adirondack Park. Residents have been promised publicly — by Gov. Andrew Cuomo — that the Finch, Pruyn land deal will help the local economy.

Supervisors from five towns — Long Lake, Newcomb, North Hudson, Minerva and Indian Lake — have been meeting with state officials to figure out how the towns can benefit from those purchases.

State leaders need to realize that they can’t just buy chunks of land and expect tourists to easily flock to these remote corners of the Park; the purchase comes with an obligation to assure access.

And access means a complete reconstruction of State Route 28N. Talk is cheap. What Newcomb needs is action.

And they need it now.

his country, once called the melting pot of the world, was known for taking in immigrants from all corners of the Earth and merging their cultures into ours to create a patchwork democracy. Melting pot is a term you don’t hear used much anymore, but more than any other nation, the term still applies to the U.S. today.

Sadly, it didn’t happen overnight, but over a period of time through strife and turmoil America grew to be known as the land of opportunity where freedom reined and personal beliefs were to be respected.

Anyone had a shot to make it if they had fearless perseverance, conviction of beliefs and a willingness to work hard. Throughout our history, we’ve many examples of individuals that changed the course of the nation as a result of their willingness to stand up and be counted, many times going against popular opinion.

One would think that we would have learned from mistakes of the past. One would hope that only through constructive and open discussion of the issues, we could as a nation address the issues of the day in a manner that intelligently seeks to resolve any differences and reach a common ground.

Today’s hot button topics are many: immigration, gun control, same sex marriage, health care, war, religion, energy, the economy, women’s rights, education, environment, unions and big business. But there are many more.

It would be nice to think in this great communication age that tolerance and respect for the right to express one’s personal views would be paramount. But instead of encouraging open debate and discussion, we’ve continued down a prejudicial path.

When all else fails, we resort to demonizing the messenger. I can understand a certain amount of trash talk among friends discussing sports, truck brands or burger choices, but on important issues in our nation’s most prestigious schools I would hope those institutions would be open minded and inquisitive.

It’s a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality — it doesn’t matter what they are — they don’t get to change the definition.”

One of the petitions stated: “We retain the highest respect for Dr. Carson’s achievements and value his right to publicly voice political views. Nevertheless, we feel that these expressed values are incongruous with the values of Johns Hopkins and deeply offensive to a large proportion of our student body.”

In his public apology in the Baltimore Sun, Carson stated, “First of all, I certainly believe gay people should have all the rights that anybody else has. What I was basically saying is that as far as marriage is concerned, that has traditionally been between a man and a woman and nobody should be able to change that.”

With respect to the commencement, he said, “I would say this is their day, and the last thing I would want to do is rain on their parade.”

As a nation we must be open to tolerance and trying to understand both sides of the issues to reach a compromise. Each side of every issue has valid arguments, but if neither side is willing to acknowledge and address those arguments, we will only prolong the anguish, anger and divisiveness these issues create in our democratic society. The world will always be full of people with different views. As a human race, we apparently still have a long way to go in learning how to constructively deal with our differences and provide true freedom of speech.

I find myself in a common situation. My parents are 88 and 89. They live on their own and are quite content; however, in the past six months I have noticed they are having difficulty with some day-to-day tasks. On top of that, my father’s memory is fading quickly and I realize they need some help before something happens that could lead to more difficulties. You are correct in observing that you are not alone—many people find themselves actively raising children and caring for aging parents all while working full time. Two words to ultimately consider when approaching them are respect and pride. Assessing what your parents interpretation of their current status is can be done by simply talking about what other aging people or your friends parents may be facing, such as “Mrs. Smith is considering moving into the assisted living facility. How do you think she will like that?” or “Mr. Franklin just had a knee replacement and is having trouble navigating his stairs” This may generate some discussion that is not personal but actually reveals some personal feelings on these subjects.

Approach any discussions with your siblings with the knowledge and understanding that you all may have different feelings about what can be done to help and support your parents. It is a funny truth, but no matter how old we are we can easily revert to our 12-year-old selves when dealing with family issues, and stepping into the role of parenting a parent can be fraught with emotion. Recognize different coping styles but always pull the focus back to what is best for your parents.

Approach your parents with simple steps to which they are in agreement. If they are struggling with meals, set up a schedule whereby siblings, when possible, can prepare a meal for them. Ask them over for dinner as this is “normal” and it is additionally social and helpful. If siblings live out of the area they might contribute financially to have take-

out brought to your parents once a week.

If they are struggling with housework and home maintenance, consider hiring a part-time housekeeper/assistant.

This person can prepare meals, set the table, clean-up after dinner and perform basic cleaning and home maintenance on whatever scale is needed. Hiring a person outside of the family offers the opportunity for family members to contribute without bearing full responsibility for care.

Many families have been torn apart by the perception or truth that responsibility falls to one person and is not equally shared by all. Avoid this all-too-common sadness by openly and honestly communicating about what each child can realistically contribute given their current life situation, and then delegate the day-to-day support to a trusted outside person. This offers your parents the independence they value and some interesting conversation and stimulation.

Sometimes we make things more emotional than they need be. Be matter of fact and straight forward. If they want to live alone and you are a little worried, make contacting you or another person easy for them, set up a daily checkin that is simply that, and arrange a once-a-week transportation service by you, a sibling or a hired assistant.

Planned Parenthood provides a free 24-hour hotline manned by trained rape crisis counselors.

Esposito said the counselors can also refer the callers to other counseling services when needed.

Planned Parenthood also provides educational materials and accompaniment for victims to have someone there to go with them to the police station, to seek medical services and forensic examinations, and through court proceedings.

“The venue, the raffle items and the bands were all donated, so we can put all the money toward helping provide services to victims of sexual assault,” said Darrah.

Darrah, who has organized the event for five of its seven programs, said she keeps jumping to volunteer because it’s a fun event that is helpful to many people.

Esposito said it is very important to have these services available for victims so they know no one asks to be raped.

“Our services are for both females and males,” said Esposito. “People seem to think rape is a crime that is just about sex. Rape is a crime about power and control.”

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH—When Arthur Slate was 12 years old, he found a 1950s Pepsi bottle in the woods.

The discovery was far from being an earthshattering archaeological triumph—it was during the 1970s that Slate happened upon it—but the find sparked in him a deep curiosity.

“You're finding history,” Slate said. “The fact that you can find something that someone threw away amazing.”

Since then he's also uncovered a 200-yearold button and parts of the Old Hotel Champlain Bottle dump.

“To find that stuff is just thrilling,” Slate said.

And now, decades later, he has worked his passion for unique treasures into a career as manager of the new Furniture and Décor shop at 2 Margaret St. in Plattsburgh.

The store had its grand opening on Monday, April 1. But not being officially open didn’t stop visitors from stopping by as Slate prepared for the big day.

They poked their heads in the door, and many asked if they could look around.

“The amount of foot traffic we received before we even opened is encouraging,” Slate said.

For the curious, it's a dream come true— the new shop can house up to 30 vendors on its main floor, with room for at least 30 more in the basement.

“Imagine a 30-room house without walls,”

Slate said.

Open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, the store offers a month-to-month booth rental, enabling vendors to be seen by a wide range of people, and allowing customers to peruse an eclectic range of goods.

At its simplest, the store is a delight for anyone looking to furnish or decorate their home with one-of-a-kind items.

Not everything in the store will be of the antique variety, though.

In fact, Furniture and Décor's owner Steve Brodi said there will be plenty of contemporary items, and that the primary goal is to offer a wide spectrum of affordable household wares, like mirrors, tables, chairs, coffee tables and lamps.

Brodi sees the addition of the store as a way to draw more people into an already thriving downtown.

“I think downtown is doing wonderful,” Brodi said. “There is a lot to see and a lot to do here. All it really needs is for more people to take the time to explore it.”Interested vendors should contact the store at 324-4655.

Terry Meron, owner of the Comfort Inn complex in Plattsburgh, added to the slew of forward-thinking ideas, and received applause when he mentioned that the 99-acre City Beach property could become a festival marketplace, complete with restaurants and shops.

He also said that the area’s history could be used to attract visitors.

Those ideas are just his own, though, and Meron implored attendees to help paint a picture of what Plattsburgh can become by getting involved with projects like Destination Master Plan and Vision 2 Action.

“I firmly believe that Plattsburgh has, over many, many years, lacked enough planning in what it should be,” Meron said. “If you take a look at the physical attributes of this community, and the potential for it, it’s within our power to make it better.”

The big picture, he said, is to give visitors

so many options that they stay for several days, thus doubling or tripling the amount of money they spend.

“That’s why Disney built four parks to keep people seven days,” Meron said.

Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett kept the momentum going by citing the presence of several global companies in the region, including Fujitsu Frontech, APG Neuros, Nova Bus and Schluter Systems.

There are more to come, he said, but cautioned that complacency and dependence on government are not the answer.

“We should be optimistic,” Bernie said.

“As I look at all of you and see the resource you bring to the community—make it happen. Don’t look to government. Don’t look to us as the sole source. You start it.”

Bassett went on to say that grants are available to help young entrepreneurs.

“If you ask, you might be surprised at what’s there,” Bassett said. “Get aggressive and make it happen. You’ll be surprised what the results are.”

Through that office, a revolving loan fund could be created, which would enable local business owners to apply for financial help for things like repairs.
