Latremore makes dean’s list at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. — Devin Latremore, daughter of Amanda and Christopher Latremore of Chazy, was named to dean’s list for the fall 2010 semester at Saint Michael’s College. Latremore is a first-year biology major at the liberal arts, residential Catholic college.

Former Cadyville Elementary School sale near CADYVILLE — The Saranac Central School District eports r a developer is intere sted in purchasing the former Cadyville Elementary School. The district board of education approved a resolution to tentatively sell the building for $400,000.

The property consists of 10.2 acres, parking lot, playground and the one-story school building.

The deal will be finalized unless 10 per cent of eligible voters in the district petition for a district vote on the matter, amounting to roughly 650 people.

River’s flooding subsides in Northern Tier region CHAMPLAIN — Flooding from the Great Chazy River that occurre d in the town of Champlain over the weekend of Mar ch 19-20 has subsided, being attributed to colder temperatures.

During the flood, two homes were reportedly evacuated. One housed five people and one housed three. The residents have since been able to return home.

Northern Tier business gives new life to roadkill (don’t worry, it’s not real)

ROUSES POINT — When you want to send someone near and dear to you something from the heart, it’s easy to think of the usual gifts — flowers, chocolates, cute stuffed animals. But, when you want to send something to someone who’s caused you frustration, the market for that kind of gift has been rather limited. Until now.

Arthur Penfield T remblay has cr eated a business that will provide a unique novelty item he feels will fill the niche that traditional greeting card companies and stuffed animal manufacturers have overlooked — satisfying frustration.

“I was thinking ther e ar e a lot of people who kind of need a way to vent that’s nonviolent,” Tremblay said. “So, I came up with the idea of sending somebody r oadkill as kind of a fun way of expr essing your displeasure.”

Through his new business, Adirondack Road Pizza, Tremblay is creating synthetic flattened stuffed animals — skunks, woodchucks, possums and squirr els — that will be deliver ed via FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service in — what else? — pizza boxes.

“They a re k ind of c ute,” s aid Tremblay, noting the animals come designed with tir e tracks acr oss their backs and pink tongues hanging out. “It’s really zany.”

“It’s part enthralling and part frightening,” Tremblay said, laughing. “It’s a big challenge. It’s entirely different from what I normally do. Becoming an entrepreneur and a manufacturer is quite a shift.”

The business is an idea that has been gestating for about 18 years, said Tremblay, but only really taken shape in the last 18 months.

Paquette named chamber’s Irishman of the Year

Recognized for career as educator, legislator and keeper of history

PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Celine R. Paquette is this year ’s North Country Chamber of Commerce Irishman of the Year.

The honor was bestowed upon the dir ector of the Samuel de Champlain History Center, former county legislator and educator during the annual North Country Chamber of Commerce St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast at the State University of NewYork at Plattsburgh Angell College Center March 17.

Master of cer emonies Kevin J. Killeen made the declaration, which gives surprise recognition to those who continue to make contributions to the community . Killeen hinted at who the honor ee was with terms like “hails fr om the north,” “has pr ovided leadership and legislation,” and “entr usted to ensur e the quality of higher education.”

However, it was when he said the honor ee has had a “close r elationship with the founder of our lake and its past,” r eferring to Samuel de Champlain, Paquette said that’s what gave it away for her.

“I’ve always referred to Champlain as my boyfriend,” said Paquette, laughing. “So, that was a hint.”

When r eceiving the awar d, Paquette thanked the chamber of commerce and those in attendance, adding she was “humbled to join a very d istinguished lis t of past honorees.”

“I had no idea,” Paquette said after eceivr ing the award. “I’m overwhelmed. I mean er ally, what a surprise. This is wonderful.”

Paquette served as a county legislator from 1995 to 2008 and has served on several boards and committees, including the SUNY Plattsburgh boar d of tr ustees, Battle of Plattsburgh Association, Diocese of Ogdensburg Investment Committee and, most r ecently, as vice-chair of the Hudson-FultonChamplain Quadricentennial Commission

Paquette took her admiration for Champlain one step further when she opened the Samuel de Champlain History Center in 2009. The center, located on Elm Street in the village of Champlain, houses more than 300 books and a host of items directly-related to the region’s history.

Paquette is a graduate of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, holding a bachelor ’s degree in school nurse teaching.

Earlier in her career, she spent 24 years as a

teacher, supervisor and eventually administrator in the East Greenbush school district.

She obtained her master ’s and doctoral degrees fr om SUNY Albany and spent thr ee years as principal of the Ticonderoga Middle School befor e r eturning to Champlain to start Paquette’s Insurance Agency in 1987 with her since late husband, Lawrence.

Paquette now joins the ranks of several dozen others who have r eceived the designation of Irishman of the Year since 1959.

Area school districts should merge administrative functions

F

or years, schools across upstate New York have pr oclaimed ambitious mission statements about preparing students for the ever -evolving challenges expected during the 21st century.

At the same time, soaring fuel prices, along with ballooning school employee benefit expenses, ar e boosting the cost of education.

Coupled with a shrinking population — school districts across the Adirondacks have lost more than 30 percent of their enrollment in 30 years — the cost per student to educate children in many districts has soared, while families face ever -higher school taxes and increased costs of living.

The state Commission for Pr operty Tax Relief notes that school districts in the Adirondacks have an average student population one-third less than the statewide average, and their cost per pupil can be up to five times higher than the statewide average.

Throughout the Adirondacks, citizens have heard about school district consolidation as a way to save money while of fering a higher quality education. An in-depth study recently concluded that consolidating

school districts in the state with fewer than 900 students would result in an annual savings of $158.5 to $189.2 million.

But consolidating schools has its serious drawbacks — including exhaustive bus rides and tearing apart a community’s fabric of life.

There’s a better way to achieve greater efficiency and save taxpayer money while retaining all the benefits of a hometown school — and that’s merging or sharing school districts’ administrative functions.

According to the Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Pr oject study, only 17 percent of schools’ administrative services are shared in the Adirondacks. Meanwhile, total K-12 enr ollment has decr eased an average of 329 students per year , with even steeper declines recently.

While school principals have site-specific problems to strategize, schools’ top administrators — the superintendent and business manager — have more abstract decisions to make, decisions more suitable to generalist, regional solutions.

Newcomb Central offers a dramatic example of the prevailing trend. They’ve suffered a 54 per cent decline in students since 1980, yet they are now spending about $61,000 per student for their education.

Or consider Indian Lake Central. It has dropped steadily to 170 students K-12, yet its annual budget has increased to $4.56 million, and its cost per student has risen to $25,553. The dis trict, however, has a fulltime superintendent, business manager and another top administrator plus a principal.

In 2009, the salaries of these four employees

totaled $307,870 — all bankr olled by local taxpayers. In Minerva, the six school administrators earn a collective $367,483 to serve a mere 100 or so students.

But Minerva and Newcomb Central have taken one small step towar d m erging administrations, and appar ently it’s worked out well. They shar e a business manager , a position that routinely pays $75,000 in rural areas and far more elsewhere.

The idea of consolidating administrative functions has gained some traction nationwide. In Ohio, a top business leader is now urging the state politicians to have only one set of school administrators in each county, a move that that is estimated to save the state $781 million annually. His proposal is based on an exhaustive study and its findings of considerable success for the move in Virginia, wher e ther e is one school district per county. A similar campaign is active in Pennsylvania.

As a medical student, a neur ologist intr oduced us to the “Matter horn syndr ome.” He said if we do five tests on a patient and one comes back slightly abnormal, we then do four more. If one of those is abnormal, we then do even more. Eventually, we have created a mountain of data that may or may not have anything to do with the patient’s problems.

We may have a vast arsenal of testing capability, but every time we do a test, we run the risk of getting a false positive. Acting on that by doing more testing or by treating a problem that is asymptomatic may have no impact on the health and well being of the patient.Yes, there are times when testing is necessary and helpful and will save lives and improve health. But “just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.”

To control the cost of health car e, we need to question the amount of screening exams. Maybe a better history and physical examination could avoid the need for multiple tests. It's possible that further intervention may be futile and cause more harm than good for the patient or the family.

Annual maple season now upon us Making ‘super smoothies’

T

here is another gr oup of outdoor enthusiasts, besides gar deners, that is very excited with the r ecent spring weather — the maple syru p producers. In cold climate areas, like ours, sugar maple tr ees stor e star ch in their stems and r oots befor e the winter; the starch is then converted to sugar and rises in the sap in the spring. Maple tr ees can be tapped and the exuded sap collected and concentrated by heating to evaporate the water. Because needs to be concentrated thr ough evaporation, it takes appr oximately 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup!

The maple season is completely dictated by the weather. If the night’s too warm, days below fre ezing, et cetera, the length and quality of the sugaring season is adversely affected. And as the ew York State Maple Weekend — which feaweather continues to tures open houses at warm thr ough the maple syrup producers across spring, the maple tree’s the state — continues this normal biological weekend.

Maple syr up is an important part of the New York State’s and the North Country’s economy . Ver-

mont produces the most syrup in the country, followed by Maine and New York. The cr op value of our state’s syr up is estimated to be around $14 million dollars! Since most of the syr up is pr oduced in northern ar eas of the state, buying syrup fr om a local pr oducer is a great way to keep money in our local economy.

Not too long ago, most sap was collected in buckets and evaporated over a fire. Plastic collection tubing and reverse osmosis processes have improved maple syr up ef ficiency.

The sap still needs to be boiled in an evaporator , but since some of the water is taken out during the reverse osmosis the time required to condense the sap into syrup.

As a child, I always wanted to make maple syr up.

I wanted to tap our two large Norway maples and boil the sap on the stove. My par ents, being wise, never allowed this. Boiling the sap in your kitchen makes for a very sticky situation. Boiling the sap on pr opane burners outside solves this pr oblem.

And, visiting a local maple syr up producers is yet another way to keep your kitchen clean while supporting your local economy!

I always say that the best way to get kids to eat healthy is to lead by example. So get them involved in the kitchen and make it educational at the same time.

Benefit this Saturday at VFW for woman with small cell cancer

WEST CHAZY — Donna B. David won’t let cancer win.

“I have cancer . It doesn’t have me,” she said. “And, it’s not going to.”

“I’m too damn miserable to die,” she added, laughing.

The 62-year-old mother of five was diagnosed last May with stage thr ee small cell cancer, which has af fected one-third of one of her lungs and spr ead to her esophagus and lymph nodes. She didn’t take the diagnosis lying down, however. In October, she began a steady r egimen of radiation tr eatments and began chemotherapy.

So far, David said, the tr eatments have been working.

“I was going for radiation five days a week for seven weeks and I’m still going through chemo,” said David. “So far, one of my X-rays said [the cancer] is shrinking.”

However, there is still the possibility David will have to have the lung removed if progress doesn’t continue.

“I figure there’s nothing I can do about it.

Just have to keep a stiff upper lip,” she said.

In or der to help David with her medical expenses, her fellow members of the V eterans of Foreign Wars Post 1466 Ladies Auxiliary in Beekmantown will be hosting a benefit for her this Satur day, Mar ch 26, at the Spellman Road post beginning at 1 p.m.

The event will consist of a spaghetti dinner, bake sale, 50-50 drawing, live auction and Chinese auction. Entertainment will be provided by the Jay W alken Band and others, as well as a disc jockey service.

The cost of the dinner will be $8 per plate, with children younger than 7 eating free.

Those unable to attend the benefit may mail donations to the VFW Post 1466, 327 Spellman Road, Beekmantown N.Y. 12901.

‘I Can Cope’ series planned at Fitzpatrick Cancer Center PLATTSBURGH — I Can Cope, a four -week pr ogram that of fers information and insights about cancer, will begin Tuesday, April 5, with “Learning About Cancer and Cancer T reatment.” Each 2-hour program begins at 6 p.m. and is held at the FitzPatrick Cancer Center on the CVPH Medical Center campus, 75 Beekman St. I Can Cope can help patients, their family members and friends with the day-to-day issues of living with a chronic disease like cancer. “L earning About C ancer a nd Cancer T reatment” will be pr esented by Kathy Bracero, an oncol-

ogy certified nurse. She will discuss the nature of the disease, various treatment options and associated side effects.

The second class, “Keeping Well in Mind and Body ,” takes place Tuesday, April 12. Stacey LaFave, oncology social worker fr om the FitzPatrick Cancer Center , will talk about the dimensions of wellness, the mind/body r elationship and it’s importance in symptom management.

LaFave will also be the feature d speaker at “Understanding Feelings and Relationships,” planned for Tuesday, April 19. At this class,

she will discuss good communication skills and teach skills in adapting to changes br ought about by cancer and its treatment.

The final session of I Can Cope, “Discovering Resources and Celebrating Life,” takes place Tuesday, April 26. LaFave will help participants locate resources and support systems a nd f ind n ew s trategies for getting thr ough cancer tr eatment and beyond.

All classes are free and will meet in the FitzPatrick Cancer Center.

Public meeting Thursday on planning, zoning code revision process ROUSES POINT — The village of Rouses Point will hold a public meeting at the Rouses Point Civic Center , 39 Lake St., Thursday, March 31, beginning at 7 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting will be to explain the planning and zoning code revision process and to hear input from village residents.

The village of Rouses Point obtained funding from a 2005 Environmental Protection Fund grant from the Department of State to examine its zoning code for possible revisions to leverage the r edevelopment of the downtown and waterfront envisioned in the village’s Downtown and Waterfront Plan and Design Guidelines.

Using the grant funding, the village has hire d River Street Planning and Development, professional planning and eco-

nomic development consultants, to pr ovide their suggestions for impr oving the zoning code to leverage economic development and encourage business investment in the downtown. River Street will also recommend which, if any, elements from the village’s Design Guideline suggestions to include in the zoning code. River Street has extensive experience in assisting New York State communities in developing strategies to facilitate economic development and in writing planning and zoning codes. River Street has already identified eliminating special permits for traditional downtown commercial uses as a key improvement they will suggest to make it easier for businesses to occupy commer cial properties without a lengthy review process.

News of the Week Feds ban possession of fake pot PLATTSBURGH — The federal government is cracking down on the possession of pr oducts labeled as herbal incense but that are used like marijuana. Chemically laced “fake pot” substances such as Blaze, K2, Spice, and Red X Dawn ar e among brands believed to produce a similar high to pot.

According to a press release from the Drug Enforcement Administration, side ef fects of the pr oducts include convulsions, anxiety attacks, dangero usly elevated heart rates, increased blood pressure, vomiting and disorientation.

“Young people ar e being harmed when they smoke these danger ous ‘fake pot’ pr oducts and wr ongly equate the pr oducts' ‘legal’ r etail availability with being ‘safe’,” DEA administrator Michele M. Leonhart stated in the r elease. “Parents and community leaders look to us to help them protect their kids, and we have not let them down. T oday’s action, while temporary , will reduce the number of young people being seen in hospital emer gency r ooms after ingesting these synthetic chemicals to get high.”Sixteen states have already taken legal action to contr ol one or mor e of the chemicals found in the products.

Since 2009, the DEA has received an increasing number of r eports fr om poison contr ol centers, hospitals and law enforcement regarding these products. Sixteen states at least have already taken action to control one or more of these chemicals.

Local musician scores festival film PLATTSBURGH — Musician Larr Dolan has composed a film scor e for “Convento,” a documentary directed by Jarred Alterman. The film was shot in Portugal in Sao Francisco, a 400-year-old former monastery.

The film made its North America premiere at the South

by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, last week.

The film was one of eight being screened in the Emerging Visions category.

Man found in possession of child porn TICONDEROGA — Arthur Ellis Jr., 62, was arrested March 14 on charg es of promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child.

Ellis was allegedly found in possession of child pornography following an investigation by Ticonderoga Town Police. Police claim they found several DVDs containing child pornography in Ellis’ Montcalm Stre et residence.

Ellis was arraigned in T iconderoga Town Court and remanded to Essex County Jail without bail.

The matter is currently under investigation.

Traffic stop nets DWI charge PLATTSBURGH — Christopher L. Debiew , 32, faces felony charges after a traffic stop on Military Turnpike March 13.

Debiew was reported stopped by state police after the vehicle he was driving swerved over the center line. He was allegedly found to be intoxicated and driving without a license.

Debiew was charged with driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction within the last 10 years and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was further char ged with thir d-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle — a misdemeanor.

Debiew was arraigned in Town of Plattsburgh Court and remanded to Clinton County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail or $2,000 secure bond.

County legislature seeking proposals to privatize home healthcare services Action taken doesn’t mean a done deal, say officials

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Legislatur e will pr oceed with pursuing bids to privatize its home healthcare services.

The legislature met in regular session at the Clinton County Government Center March 16, where representatives voted 8-1 in favor of putting forth a r equest for proposals to “explor e alternatives for home healthcare.” Legislator Samuel J. Trombley, R-Area 2, cast the sole dissenting vote. Legislator Jacqueline A. Walker, R-Area 8, was absent.

Dr. John W. Gallagher, DArea 9 — one of the legislators who voted for the r esolution — addressed an audience of several dozen people who turned out to speak against privatizing the services. Gallagher emphasized the decision does not lock the legislature into making a decision to move forwar d with privatization.

“Hearing what I’ve hear d tonight, if wer e voting on selling the home health care license tonight, I would be voting no. But, I have to vote to explor e the alternatives," Gallagher said.

The matter was br ought before the legislatur e following an increasingly large amount of money hemorrhaged by the Clinton County Health Department for operating home healthcar e services. Last year, the services cost the county mor e than $5 million to operate, and brought in less than $3.5 million, r esulting in a mor e than $1.5 million loss.

Prior to the vote, legislators heard from members of the public, voicing their concerns over the idea of the county potentially giving up control of its home healthcare services.

Registered nurse Jill Parent questioned what would happen to those in need of long-term car e, like the patients she sees now. With an estimated average cost of $380 a day to live in a nursing home and what would be a flood of new clients for the facilities, the option of patients being placed in a nursing home is not an option at all, she said.

“The nursing homes in this county ar e full,” Par ent said. “So, where are they going to go? Another city? Another state? And, are we r eally going to rip them out of their homes, away fr om their family and their friends?”

Those who would choose to r emain in their homes would run the risk of not re-

ceiving pr oper and r outine medical tr eatment as they currently do, added Parent.

“They could die or at the very least, end up in the hospital, which in the end, is going to cost us all a lot mor e money,” she said.

Rosemary Giroux, a registered nurse with the home healthcare unit, said the problem lies with the fact Medicaid/Medicare r eimbursement rates have declined in r ecent years.“If you want the cost to be smaller, the best way to accomplish this is to keep control of dir ectly pr oviding services and not put contr ol in someone else’s hands,” Giroux said.

Others who spoke made suggestions for cutting expenses within the home healthcare unit, including maximizing r evenue through co-pays, of fering more training that will ultimately make the department more efficient, and computerizing medical charts to reduce paperwork.

“If those things can be done and make a difference, then I say they need to be explored,” said Legislator Sara

E. Rowden, D-Area 4.

When voting against pursuing with the RFP , Trombley stated he was compelled by those speaking during the public forum against the move.

“I came here tonight in the interest of supporting this,” said Trombley, r eferring to voting for moving ahead with the RFP. “But, I learned an awful lot here tonight ...

And, as the chairman of the human services committee, I guess I’d be a hypocrite if I was to vote for this.”

However, Gallagher and other legislators r eiterated the vote would not lock the legislature into any sort of agreement.

“Just for clarification, several of the legislators indicated that if the vote tonight was to sell the licenses, the vote would have been no, and I think that’s important to note,” Gallagher said.

Regardless, the state must approve any potential decision to privatize home healthcare services, accor ding to County Administrator Michael E. Zurlo.

NCCC gets visit from Al Kafaat University leader Raif Shwayri visits college on collaborative tour

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Several New York state community colleges are joining forces with a school in Lebanon to start an associate’s program for students there.

As part of the partnership,Al Kafaat University Director General Raif Shwayri made a visit to North Country Community College as part of a statewide tour March 17.

“We are visiting North Country, Onondaga, Nassau and Monr oe Community Colleges,” said Rosemary Ortlieb-Padgett, International Student Affairs of ficer with Nassau Community College. “We had gone to Al Kafaat and thr ough that visit formed a partnership with them and have petitioned the state to help establish an associate’s degree program in Lebanon, which is

something they do not have.”

“Everyone is engaged in the learning process and where we can partner together both with Al Kafaat and the other schools in the state that ar e part of this,” Maur een Styles, Assistant Dean For Grants and Funded Pr ograms at NCCC, said. “Sometimes, we can feel isolated and away fr om the other community colleges being wher e we are at, but this is giving us the chance to talk to people who ar e doing the same things throughout the state and give us new context to assess what we do and implement that into a more global workforce.”

During a lunch meeting at NCCC, Shwayri credited the staff at the school for their efforts.

“The quality of the work that you are doing is fantastic,” Shwayri said. “The students that I sat with this morning wer e very receptive and interested in what was going on.

He added that he liked that community college model of smaller class sizes and

added that he felt college was about getting students prepared for a career.

“Graduates should not just come away with a piece of paper that says I did this and that,” Shwayri said. “They should come away with a job. If we have to choose between the two, I choose the job.

At Al Kafaat, we have a database of needs in our country and we will match the training of our students to the needs that we ar e facing.”

Shwayri said that ther e wer e times that he would r emind members of his faculty that they needed to listen to their students.

“They have 10 ideas and while eight of them may be worthless, two of the ar e genius,” he said. “When we started this, the teachers wer e telling the students to keep their ideas to themselves and I had to intervene.”

Shwayri also said that he enjoyed his time in the Adirondacks, especially waking up early and seeing the sunrise in Lake Placid.

“It was stunning,” he said.

Dalton said that CFES currently works with students in 150 schools in 22 states, totaling over 15,000 students.

Dalton said that he appr eciated the documentary because it dealt with the situation in a r eal way.

“With a documentary , we’r e dealing with not illusion, but reality,” Dalton said. “Like all movies, ther e ar e some good guys in this film and ther e ar e some demons as well. What we want to do is get people to pay attention to the low income stu-

dents and make sur e that they get to college.”

Dalton said that the biggest thing that any student needs is a chance.

“The dif ference between a graduate and a drop out is not a building or materials, it’s opportunity,” Dalton said.

After the movie, Dalton and Willsboro Central School Superintendent Stephen Br oadwell talked with those who attended the film.

‘Boogie Bash’ this Saturday to help local Gabriel Project

PLATTSBURGH — It’s dancing, but it’s dancing for a cause.

The first annual “Boogie Bash” will invade the gymnasium at Our Lady of V ictory Academy this Saturday, March 26, with a mission of helping a local nonprofit organization.

Boogie Bash organizer Paula Schares said the beginner dance instr uction event will serve a dual purpose — getting people out on the floor to try new forms of dance and helping the local chapter of The Gabriel Project, a Christian-based network of church volunteers who of fer assistance to pregnant women and women with newborn babies.

“We help those in and ar ound Plattsburgh,” said Schar es, who is also a volunteer mentor for The Gabriel Project. “Sometimes the families just need a few extra diapers, a little money to get them some mor e formula, some clothing. Sometimes they need a lot of assistance.”

Last year, 243 families were helped by the organization, Schar es said. Thr ough the help of money to be raised by the Boogie Bash, Schares said she’d like to see that support grow.

The other side of the coin, she added, is that this Saturday’s event will also educate beginners to the different types of dance out there such as line dancing, r ound dancing, square dancing, English country dancing, contra dancing and Zumba, a form of dance fitness.

“It always irritates me when I hear someone say ther e’s nothing to do in Plattsburgh,” Schares said with a laugh. “There is.

There’s lots of things to do here.”

The Boogie Bash will be a “perfect opportunity” to see that, Schar es said, and give people one central location to learn and try dances they may never have been able to try before.

“I’ve never tried Zumba because it doesn’t usually seem to fit into my schedule and I don’t really want to walk into an ongoing class. I just want to do it where there’d be a

Ducks Unlimited banquet slated ALTONA — The 26th annual Kings’ Bay Ducks Unlimited Banquet will be held at the Rainbow W edding and Banquet Hall, 47 Woods Falls Road, next Saturday, April 2.

The event will begin with doors opening at 5 p.m. for a viewing of wildlife and home items to be auctioned and raffled during the evening. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., with a choice of prime rib or stuffed chicken breast. The auction will begin at 7 p.m. under the direction of auctioneer Kevin Hicks.

The event is expected to raise thousands of dollars for Ducks Unlimited, a national and international nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The money will be used to start and complete local and regional pr ojects thr oughout the next year . The local chapter has raised more than $400,000 to date.

PLATTSBURGH — When Melissa Fr ederick decided to open Batters Up Bake Shop, she knew she wanted to of fer more than the average bake shop.

“I’m willing to try anything,” Frederick said. “I challenge the customers to bring me something that they don’t think can be done and then I do it for them.”

The r ecently-opened homebased business on Smokey Ridge Road offers cakes and a full line of baked goods such as pies, cookies, cupcakes and muffins to retail outlets and individuals looking to make any occasion a special one.

Drawing from her 20 years of experience in baking and cake decorating, Frederick uses her cr eative eye to design “unique, one-of-akind cakes” that meet her customers’ specifications, using only the highest-quality ingredients.

“Every special occasion deserves a cake that is made to be the centerpiece of that celebration,” Frederick said. “If it is for a party, then you want something that is fun and personalized to the party’s theme. If it is a wedding, most cou-

So, we can design a cupcake tr ee with a cake on top. That’s very popular.”

In addition to looking good, the

most important thing is to create a memorable confection that all guests can enjoy, added Frederick.

“It has to taste good, look good and be something personal to them for their specific event,” said Frederick, who added themed birthday, anniversary, and r etirement cakes

“I encourage people to check out the galleries on-line and r ead the comments ther e,” said Fr ederick, adding comments like “Wonderful, Awesome Cake and Cupcakes!” and “Your cakes are absolutely incredible!” are among those left on her Facebook page.

“We make gr eat cakes because our customers have amazing ideas,” said Frederick.

keith@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Steven Carder was a double-double threat every time he stepped onto the court, scoring his 1,00-th career point in his senior season and leading the Northeastern Clinton Cougars to the regional finals and a near upset of top-ranked Potsdam.

For that, the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference coaches honored Carder with the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2010-11 season last week.

Teammate Jamie Davison, who hit several key thr ee-pointers throughout the Cougars post season r un and dished out eight assists in the r egional final, was also named to the first team.

AuSable Valley’s leading scorer, Brody Douglass, was also named to the CV AC first team, along with Saranac’s Dylan Everleth, Plattsburg h’s Kyle LaPoint and Beekmantown’s 1,000point scorer Thomas Ryan.

Hornet teammates Tre Bucci and Jor dan Knight wer e named to the CV AC second team, along with Peru’s Kyle Carter, AuSable Valley’s Jordan Coolidge and Beekmantown’s Keegan Ryan.

keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — In a year where three players scored their 1,000th car eer point in the CVAC, the first to do so was recognized as the MVP of the league.

AuSable V alley senior forwar d Alexis Coolidge was named as the MVP of the conference, while teammate Alexis Facteau was named to the second team.

“She has really stepped up as a leader for us this season,” Patriots coach Roger Long earlier this season. “She has been a five-year varsity player and a great scorer.”

The CVAC first team featur ed the other two 1,000-point scor ers in Northeastern Clinton guar d Katrina Garrand and Lake Placid guard Megan Riley. They were joined

by Saranac’s Stephanie Linder and Northeastern Clinton’s Chelsey Brooks.

In Division I, Jocelyn Bowen helped lead the Schr oon Lake Lady W ildcats to the MVAC championship game and the Section VII semifinals, earning MVP honors. She was joined on the all-star squad

Three-on-three tourney planned CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Central School sophomore class will host its annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Saturday, April 9, in the gym of the middle school, 1490 State Route 9N. Divisions for boys and girls will be based on grade levels 3-4, 5-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Students will be allowed to move up in level but not down.

Students in grades 3-6 will play from 9-11 a.m., and those in grades 7-12 from 11 a.m.1 p.m. The cost to r egister is $30 per team.

Light graduates basic training COLUMBIA, S.C. — Army Pfc. Robert J. Light has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson.

During the nine weeks of training, Light studied the Army mission, history, tradition and cor e values, physical fitness, and r eceived instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and cer emony, mar ching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map re ading, field tactics, mili tary courtesy, mili tary justice system, basic first aid, foot mar ches, and field training exercises.

Adirondack Sportsman’s Dinner

ast weekend, I traveled south to Schroon Lake to attend the 15th Annual Adirondack Sportsmans Dinner. The event, which is organized and hosted by consortium of local ministries, always draws a large crowd, and this year was no different.

Folks fr om Wells mixed with easily with others from Chazy, Old For ge or Dresden, and evidently , they all share a similar passion for the outdoor life. It is larg ely a blue collar audience, and camo baseball caps wer e the common fashion theme of the day.

Seminar topics included bir chbark canoe building, waterfowling, wood carving, wilderness survival, turkey hunting, deer management, bass fishing, small gamme hunting, and many more.

For the keynote addr ess, an appr eciative audience of over 500 guests filled the auditorium at the Mountainside Bible Center as featured speaker, Dave Blanton, Executive Producer of Bill Jordan’s Realtree Outdoors television series, and the popular Monster Bucks ® video series, r elated tales of his hunting experiences with NASCAR legend, the late, Dale Earnhart.

I never fail to be impr essed with how effectively the shared passion for an outdoor life serves to foster a commonality among such a diverse group of people. Within minutes of arriving, I always feel as if I am surrounded by a group of old friends, although there’s hardly a handfull of familiar faces in the crowd.

The event, which has become a spring ritual, always seems to pro mpt me to try a new activity. After seeing a bit of W ilmington based woodcarver, Allen Aar dsma’s seminar on woodcarving, I’ve begun sear ching for the woodworking tools that I put away

years ago.

They ar e available on a first come basis and unfortunately , there are only 500 tickets available, due to space limitations.

Keep tabs on the site, as tickets are usually scooped up within days of being offered. In many respects, the gathering can be a life changing event. Congratulations to the or ganizing committee for pr oviding another entertaining and engaging event!

New York State guides journey to Lake Placid By the year 2000, there were a number of indigenous occupations that ceased to exist, all across the Adirondacks.

A century earlier, in 1900, these trades included ice harvesters, loggers, beekeepers and tappers who collected spr uce gum.

There were also blacksmiths and log drivers, camp cooks, boatbuilders and miners; and a variety of other tradesmen whose occupations wer e r eplaced by such modern technologies as internal combustion engines to refrigeration to feller/bunchers.

However, there is one occupation that not only survived the centuries, it has thrived.

In 1919, when the NYS Fish and Game Commission for began to r egister guides, only 176 individuals stepperd forward. By 1924, when the state r equired all guides to be licensed, their numbers had swelled to over 1,100 individuals.

By the time the old, Adirondack Guides Association disbanded iin 1957, ther e were fewer than 500 licensed guides.

This charactur e has been foster ed by innumberable writers, ever since guides were first discover ed working in the wooded wilderness of the Adirondacks in the mid1800’s.

The original Adirondack Guides Association was founded in Saranac Lake on June 28, 1891. New York State surveyor , Verplank Colvin, was named the honorarfy presdient of the organization.

Times have changed considerably since then, and the pr ofession has experienced the ups and down of economic turmoil, through two W old Wars, social upheaval, and the advent of the electronic age.

However, a century later , the pr ofession remains as vital and vibrant today, as it was in 1911, with over 2,000 licensed guides in the state.

In 1982, the New York State Outdoor Guides Association reorganized and incorporated under the charter of the original Adirondack Guides Association and over the wekend of Mar ch 25-27, Association member will return to Lake Placid for their 30th Annual Rendezvous. In fact, The Rendezvous will be hosted in the same facility that hosted the original Lake Placid gathering.

An indication of just how much times have changed, is evident in the membership, wher e female members rank high.

About a quarter of all NYS licensed guides are female, and the Guides Association has already elected a woman as its president.

More than a century after the state first began licensing guides, the pr ofession still thrives across the park, and throughout the state.

Today, guides lead whitewater rafting expeditions, r ock climbing adventur es and

wilderness ski tours. But in many cases, guides still function in traditional r oles ranging from camp cook, to riflery instr uctor, to storyteller.

However, the pr ofession has become much more specialized, with guides pro viding a select type of service, that is their trademark, whether flyfishing or bir ding, kayak touring or trail running, ice climbing or track interpretation.

Todays guides still function in a variety of traditional roles, from cook, to instructor, to storyteller. Yet, the pr ofession has become much mor e specialized that ever before, with many guides pr oviding a select type of service, that has become their trademark. Guides specializing in flyfishing have experienced a significant incr ease in demand, as that sport has blossomed, while others have developed a specific niche for such unique activities as bird ing, wild flowers, bowhunting, kayak touring, trail r unning, ice climbing, women-only trips, llama trekking and track interpretation.

Currently, ther e ar e at least five North Country colleges that of fer degr ees in Wilderness Recreation Leadership, Outdoor Recreation or Expeditionary Studies.

Adirondack Community College in Glens Falls even offers a DEC accr edited training program for licensed whitewater guides. A the pr ofession transitions fr om traditional 'bait and bullet' activities towar d more adventure sports such as whitewater, rock and ice climbing or ecotourism pursuits such as birding and nature studies; I expect the demand for their services will continue to be strong.
