Chazy Music Theatre to perform West Side Story Production running next Thursday through Sunday

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — Chazy Music Theatre will be putting on a production of West Side Story — the classic tale of love and conflict.

Co-director Andrew Ducharme said the story can easily be compared to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

“The characters of Tony and Maria come from different ethnic backgrounds,” he explained. “You have basically this love affair that is parallel to the star-crossed lovers in Romeo & Juliet.”

Ducharme said he and co-director Jason Borrie were involved in a production of West Side Story years ago through the Essex Theatre Company.

“We really, really enjoyed our experience with doing this show and it’s a show that Chazy had never done before,” Ducharme said. “So, we put a proposal in and the board thought it was a good proposal and they chose to do West Side this year.”

Chazy Music Theatre is a community organization made of up of students and adults of all ages, with a crew of nearly 85 people for West Side Story — from the production crew, to actors, to the orchestra.

“Chazy has a great reputation for providing quality theatre at a low price,” Ducharme said. “And, as far as the actors, production staff and orchestra, everybody really comes together to work as hard as they can to make the best show possible.”

As for West Side Story, Ducharme explained it’s a “great story of love and conflict and that always keeps people interested.”

“It’s music and it’s dance,” he added. “I think a lot of people ... grew up with the melodies of this play and there’s a lot of people that when they talk to me, they always have experiences that relate to this play. They always remember the first time they saw it on film, the first time somebody brought them to see the production.”

Although Ducharme said the play does not “end happy,” it still provides good lessons to the audience.

“It conveys a lot of lessons about hate, about love, about youth,” he said. “All those themes that are Romeo & Juliet as well.”

The play will be held at the Chazy Central Rural School Auditorium, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, through Saturday, March 20, and at 2 p.m. March 20 and Sunday, March 21.

Although Myers passed away in 2008, Sarbou-Jubert continues the annual event, now as a memorial to her mother.

“I continue to do this because it’s a way to keep my mom close to us,” Sarbou-Jubert said.

The main fundraising event was held at Global Fitness and Martial Art Club, owned

by Sarbou-Jubert, March 6. However, people are still welcome to bring in donations are pick up a form to be sponsored.

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Bonnilee Myers always loved children. Her daughter, Joy SarbouJubert kept this in mind when she began Workout for a Cure in 2005.

Workout for a Cure, a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, allows people to bring in flat donations or be sponsored based on how many weights they lift or miles they run. “[My mother ’s] favorite charity while I was growing up was St. Jude’s,” Sarbou-Jubert explained. “She always had an envelope set aside in the kitchen and whenever she had a few dollars, she’d always send it in to St. Jude’s.”

When Myers was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, Sarbou-Jubert decided to begin the fundraiser.

“When she was diagnosed and she had actually gone through her first round of

him for each pound he was able to lift.

“I’m expecting a good chunk of change from this,” Sarbou-Jubert said. “It’s fantastic.”

For every $75 someone raises, they’ll get a free one-month membership to the gym.

The person who raises the most money gets six months free and the person who raises the second most gets three months free.

“So, there’s a lot of good incentives for people to help out,” said Sarbou-Jubert.

She also hopes people will think of their own children, and want to help raise money for the cause.

“Think about your kids,” said SarbouJubert. “If you have kids of your own, or if you’ve ever had anyone in your family affected by cancer, and you know what it does, not just to your family, but to the person that was affected by cancer, how can you not do it?”

y mom e-mailed me recently posing the commonly heard computer question of “Should I turn it off or leave it on?” I belong to the turn-it-off crowd.

Leaving it the computer does waste electricity, but if the system goes to standby the electricity is not very much. Computer systems are all different but standby power consumption is very little. The good side of leaving it on is the system does not cool down and then warm up again when turned back on.

Some people believe the cycles of on and off creating periods of warm and cool are what makes electronic devices fail over time. The theory is it causes different things to occur like “chip creep” or it causes an “open” condition in a solder joint.

Chip creep is terminology that describes how an IC device slowly backs itself out of the socket it’s plugged into. For an analogy, think about the AC plug for the TV. If every time the TV was turned on and off the plug would come to a point where the TV would not power on any more because the con-

Self-neglect and the elderly: Know the signs

A

1998 study found in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed self-neglect among the elderly is associated with an increased risk for death. Generally, persons who refuse medical treatment or neglect their own care are unaware they need assistance. There are clues caregivers can look for to give them a better indication of whether their loved one needs a higher level of intervention.

Caregivers should ask: • Is my loved one malnourished?

• Is the refrigerator well-stocked with fresh food, or are there old, spoiled foods?

• Are they showing signs of poor hygiene?

• Do they have infections or sores that are not healing?

• Are they taking their medication or are they taking it in the manner in which it was prescribed?

• Are they becoming socially-isolated?

• How is their hearing and vision? Have they been assessed recently?

Dementia, depression, and substance abuse problems are frequently associated with self-neglect. If self-neglect is suspected, the next logical step is to determine whether they are safe to return to their home. A physician will need to be consulted to assess their level of psychological functioning. If the

All that aside, I turn it off because of the fire hazard potential. Computer power supplies are the component with the highest failure rate. They typically have one or two fans with the cheaper ones usually having only one. The fan performs double duty by cooling the power supply and exhausting the warm air from the computer case. The fans tend to collect dust, dirt, pet hair and whatever else can be drawn in which, in turn, slows down or stops the fan causing the computer to overheat and, worst-case, catch fire.

How to jump on the 12-week savings cycle

“M

any people do not have the cash flow to stock up the way you do. The economy has really hurt the budget of the average family and they are no longer able to shop the way they used to (such as taking advantage of the sales and buying extra). Do you have any tips for us?

I do use coupons but would like to take better advantage of my buying power. I just don’t really know how.”

I particularly liked this letter from a reader.

It encompasses the way many people feel when they first start using coupons. It’s a common misconception I spend a lot to stock up on quantities of the items that I buy each week.

My weekly grocery bill for our family of five averages between $40 and $60 post-coupons. But for that money, I’m typically buying around $100 worth of groceries.

Supermarkets operate on a 12-week pricing cycle, so stocking up on the things we need when the prices of these items hit their low point during this period makes sense. When you know the items you buy are at their lowest prices just one time during that cycle, buying them only when the price hits that low saves us a lot of money, even without using coupons.

Let’s take juice, for example. At my store, a bottle of grape juice can range in price from $1.99 to $3.99. Clearly, I want to buy the juice when it’s at its low price. If my family drinks one bottle of grape juice a week, I’ll need 12 bottles to get through the next 12-week cycle. While it’s true the initial expense of buying that juice all at once requires more than one might choose to budget just for juice in one week, consider the savings in buying it at that low.

A typical juice price cycle over six weeks at my store may look like this: Week 1: $1.99; Week 2: $2.29; Week 3: $2.79; Week 4: $2.99; Week 5: $3.29; and Week 6: $3.79.

If I purchased one bottle a week over this 6-week span, I’d spend $17.14. But, if I bought six bottles the week it was at its lowest point, on sale for $1.99, I’d spend a total of just $11.94.

That’s more than $5 saved in just six weeks’ time, without even considering coupons. Of course, I want to use my coupons at that low point, thus lowering my out-of-pocket cost even more.

If you shop cycle lows for everything you buy, you’re definitely buying multiples of items when the prices are low. Re-

member, though, you will not buy that item again until it goes on sale weeks from now.

So, while I might spend a large percentage of my budget on juice in a particular week, I won’t buy juice again at all until it’s on sale at a low price some time down the road.

If you followed me around the grocery store, you’d see I fill my shopping cart with an eclectic mix of items. It rarely contains all of the staples you might notice in other people’s carts, because aside from fresh produce and dairy I shop strictly for items that are at their cycle lows that particular week. I usually have what looks like an unusual quantiBy Jill Cataldo ty of the same item in my cart, because I’m stocking up! I will of course use all the coupons I have for those items as I purchase them at the low price. But even if I don’t have coupons for all of them, as with our juice example above, I know I won’t be able to purchase these items at this low price again for almost three months, so I buy what I anticipate needing.

This is a different way of shopping, it’s true, but the strategy balances out budget-wise when you consider what you’re NOT buying each week. Typically, when you’re starting out, it takes you 12 weeks to go through your first cycle, where you start to notice and learn the price highs and lows for the items you commonly buy. What is quinoa and what are its benefits?

Q

uinoa (pronounced KEEN-WAH) has been one of the primary foods of the Inca Indians for more than 5,000 years. The Incas referred to Quinoa as the “Mother Grain.” It is considered 100 percent whole grain and is close to being a perfect food source in the balance of nutrition that it provides. Technically it’s not a grain, but the seed of a leafy plant related to spinach.

Quinoa is an excellent source of protein, about 12-18 percent, and a nutritional powerhouse. According to The National Academy of Sciences, quinoa is “one of the best sources of protein in the vegetable kingdom.”

The World Health Organization has rated the quality of protein in quinoa to be equivalent or superior to that found in milk products. It is a source of all essential amino acids, a great source of B vitamins containing niacin, thiamin and B6. It contains high levels of potassium and riboflavin, and is also a good source of zinc, copper, manganese, and magnesium. It contains folic acid and vitamin E as well.

Quinoa is a great food choice for people who must follow a wheat-free/gluten-free diet because Quinoa does not contain any gluten. Quinoa can be substituted for almost any other grain and can be found in the health food section of your local supermarket or health food store.

Try this tasty recipe for a protein packed meal that is ready in 30 minutes.

Quinoa and Lentils Makes 5 servings · 1 cup of quinoa, uncooked · 2 Tbsp. olive oil · 1 medium onion · 15-oz can of lentils, rinsed and drained (if you can’t find them canned they cook up in a flash) Cook quinoa in a rice cooker or as per package instruction.

Add oil to a skillet and sauté the onion on medium heat until tender Add cooked lentils and cooked quinoa. Mix it all together and continue to cook for 5 minutes. Serve hot.

o, another week has gone by. I had some ups and downs this week — I continued to be sick with a head cold but remained healthier than I have in a while. I was still able to exercise. I was supposed to run 8 miles but only got 5 in before my asthma started bothering me. I took the necessary precautions and I stopped early, rested and took my inhaler.

This is still a win for me as last year I wouldn’t have been able to run at all and the result would have been much worse.

By mid-week, I have been feeling better and I am back to toning and spin class as normal. I plan to run the 8 miles this week to stay on track with my routine.

My diet has been going smoothly with a mix of carbs, vegetables and protein. My cravings for sweets are getting less and less so that has been a real positive for me. I feel so much stronger as a person; I can actually say I am proud of myself for the journey I am on. I believe I am setting some lifestyle changes that I can maintain.

Check back next week to see if I could do the 8 miles or not!

North Country Biggest Loser participants begin program

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Although 43 applications were turned in to the city Recreation Department, only 10 people will be taking part in the North Country Biggest Loser.

Each participant will be working alongside trainer Mary Duprey and registered dietician Ann Watts to stay on track.

“Basically I’m just going to start out very easy,” explained Duprey. “Actually walking two or three miles, or even a mile, is difficult for them.”

The members of the program began March 1, meeting at the city gym, where they will receive free memberships for the duration of the North Country Biggest Loser.

During the kickoff, each participant took the time to tell their story.

“It was pretty emotional,” Duprey said.

“There weren’t too many dry eyes left at the end. It was really neat. It was really inspirational for me to hear all that.”

Now that Duprey has met with each of the members, she, along with Watts, plan to work with each member to individualize their workouts and diets — as each member is individualized in the reason they applied for the program. · Steve Pierce, Dannemora — “After a lifelong struggle with being overweight, I now, more than ever, need to get my lifestyle

ROUSES POINT — Two new programs are being offered to the residents of the village of Rouses Point to help them save money and energy.

The Independent Energy Efficiency Program/New York Power Authority Village Insulation Program has asked the village to participate in a free program that will provide insulation to homes at no cost. The insulation would only be added to the attics, according to a press release issued by the village. “[The village] will insulate the houses, not the walls, just the ceilings,” said Mayor George A. Rivers.

“There is a lot of talent in the North Country,” said club vice president Trisha Guay. “For being this small of an area that we are, there’s a lot of kids that have amazing talent that’s right in people’s backyards.”

Guay said the club features children from ages 3 through 17, who practice for the annual show beginning in October, skating nearly four hours a night, Monday through Friday.

“It’s a lot of dedication for each child,” she said. “Including the parents and the board members that make the show spectacular.”

Not everyone can take advantage of the free insulation, though. An inspection will be performed in order to determine whether a home meets required guidelines.

The village’s second initiative to help its residents save energy is through a thermal imaging camera, which was purchased last year. This project is different from the insulation program, as it is offered free to all of the people of the village without having to meet any requirements.

According to Department of Public Works Superintendent Brian Pelkey, the thermal imaging process is quite simple.

“Once it gets dark, we get right out there and do what we have to do,” he explained. “We can do a house in five minutes.”

The infrared camera snaps several shots of a house and then are uploaded

to a computer. The photographs appear in bright colors ranging from yellow to purple.

“The brighter the color, the more heat [the house] is losing,” said Pelkey.

Rivers knows first-hand what the thermal imaging can do. He had his home windows replaced with thermal pane glass and insulated his house several years ago. With the newly-purchased camera, he volunteered his home to be photographed, which proved the energy-saving techniques worked.

“I’m very pleased,” said Rivers.

For the show, Guay said the ice rink is transformed into something “magical.”

“You walk in there and you don’t even realize that it’s actually an ice rink,” she said. “There’s decorations that go up, there’s lights that go up ... there’s a lot of preparation that’s done that’s just amazing.”

This year, there will be an added element to Sunday’s show, which will feature The Ice Crystals Synchronized Skating Team from Burlington, Vt., which, according to Guay, is “fast skating. It’s very fast skating. It’s almost like the Rockettes.”

“One of our skaters, Jessica Cartier, tried out for the team and she ended up making the team,” explained Guay. “So, her mom asked if the girls could come over and skate and we said, ‘Yes, we’ll make them our special guest.’”

Although Guay admits she was a little skeptical at first about having the syn-

chronized team a part of the show, because she didn’t want to take away from the club’s skaters, she said she hopes it will intrigue girls in the audience to want to join the club.

“We decided that it’s something new in the area that people have never seen,” Guay said of The Ice Crystals.

The event will also feature a pre-show a half-hour before each performance, which will allow the kids in the North Country Skating Club, who have passed up to the next skating level, to perform a solo.

“The pre-show soloists, each girl has a two-minute song and they skate all by themselves to their song,” Guay said.

“They work all year long, from October until now.”

MOOERS — For the second year in a row, Mooers Elementary has received a minigrant from the “Eat Well, Play Hard Program” through the Clinton County Health Department — all to help the physical and nutritional education of its students.

Last year, the school received nearly $1,600, which was used to purchase a commercial-sized popcorn machine.

“We had to make a change in the school as far as nutritional,” explained school nurse Connie Poupore, who applied for the grant.

The popcorn machine has been used as a healthy snack alternative during parties and to reward students.

“When they have the Fall Festival here at school, we substituted our usual doughnuts and cider. We did popcorn and cider,” Poupore explained. “The students absolutely loved it.”

This year, the $1,600 mini-grant will be used for physical education.

“It is our goal at Mooers Elementary to increase daily physical activity for elementary students, by providing them with new and exciting exercise routines,” stated the grant proposal. “Students will be exposed to activities that improve their cardio respiratory fitness and muscular strength and en-

During the event, testimonials of Trombley’s dedication to the area were given by his friends, Dr. John Southwick and Corey Thompson.

Southwick, who was the fire commissioner for 11 years, said it was an honor for him to be able to honor Trombley.

“Chris has really been out there and has been working hard to try to help our community, and he’s done that,” he said.

Poupore said she has been working closely with physical education teacher Patti Oliver-Moseley, who will be incorporating the equipment into gym class, even basing an entire unit on it.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said Poupore. “I think it just shows the kids different activities they can do to increase their activity; that’s fun.”

She added she hopes the students will take what they learn in school and apply it at home.

“They don’t have to have these step platforms,” Poupore explained. “They can have pieces of wood. They can do it on cinder blocks. It’s something that just shows them a different activity that they probably weren’t exposed to before.”

As long as the grants are still available from the Clinton County Health Department, Poupore plans to apply for them to help the students at Mooers Elementary.

“I’m very grateful that the Clinton County Health Department offers this to different schools and organizations in the community,” she said. “It’s a lot of work for them to do this and I truly appreciate having the opportunity to do this and certainly getting accepted for the grants.”

Thompson said the awards and accolades Trombley received at the banquet spoke volumes to the service he’s given the Champlain Fire Department.

“One of the highlights of the fire service I think he’s most proud of was the formation of the Champlain Fire District,” said Thompson. “We went from a village department, a very good department, and we ended up going to a fire district where we had a bigger tax base and we were able to set up funds to get better equipment, better apparatus.”

Thompson explained the new fire district has since

taken posession of a new fire engine, a new ambulance, a new brush truck and a new heavy rescue truck.

“We’ve seen a lot of change in Chris’ tenure,” he added. “He is definitely the reason a lot of this is going on.”

Trombley said he was very honored to be receiving the award from the Woodmen.

“You guys are all about the giving spirit,” Trombley said, “and as you probably know, I like to give. I don’t find a lot of giving values in taking a lot, but your organization is great and I’m very honored for 462.”

Also during the banquet, Jeanne Bushey was presented with the Fraternal Spirit Award and Michael Bushey was presented with the Field Fraternal Excellence Award.

Saranac dethrones Cougars in Class B

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For six straight years, Northeastern Clinton Central School has had a stranglehold on the Section VII Class B girls basketball title. The Chiefs of Saranac put an end to their reign last Friday.

Megan Bowman’s 21 points powered Saranac to a 63-53 win over the Cougars in the Section VII Class B final, held at the SUNY Plattsburgh Fieldhouse March 5.

It seemed NCCS would cruise to yet another championship as they built an early lead.

“We were full of energy the first quarter,” said Cougars head coach Dave Lambert. “We passed the ball quickly and got some fast breaks.”

But the Chiefs closed the gap, led by Bowman, who scored 10 of her 21 in the second quarter. Stephanie Linder scored 10 of her 16 in the first half as well, as Saranac took a 28-26 lead into halftime.

“She’s such a good athlete that it’s hard to contain her,” Lambert said of Bowman.

“She drove the middle and dished it off well. We just couldn’t contain her. We tried, but everything we tried failed.”

“Our shooting in the second half was not very good and we couldn’t make a free throw,” said Lambert.

Collectively, NCCS finished just 16-for-29 from the line, including 9-for-19 in the second half. Meanwhile, the Chiefs hit 16-of-20, including 9-of-10 in the fourth quarter.

Katrina Garrand led the Cougars with 17 while Rachelle Barcomb added 13.

Mary-Elizabeth Franke chipped in eight to go with nine rebounds.

“Just like all year long, Chelsea Brooks played her heart out,” said Lambert.

“Katrina had her usual good game, and Mary-Elizabeth got some big boards for us.”

Lambert said the loss was dissapointing, but congratulated Saranac head coach Mark Keyser on his 300th career win.

“We had a great year, and we hate to end it in a loss, but Saranac played a great game and they deserved to win tonight,” said Lambert.

“I know they’ll go and make Section VII proud.”
