ALBANY — State Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, joined the Republican Assembly Conference in hosting its second annual Sportsmen and Outdoor Recreation Legislative Awareness Day in Albany Jan. 26.

Duprey and her colleagues greeted thousands of outdoor enthusiasts, sporting groups, and legislative activists from across the state, including the North Country. The gathering has become a yearly tradition highlighting the traditions of hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

Bullying policies considered at NCCS

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Bullying has become a hot topic across the country. Now, educators at Northeastern Clinton Central School District are asking parents to fill out an on-line survey to help the district put better bullying policies in place.

According to high school guidance councilor Erin Fleury, eighth, ninth and 10th grade students were recently asked to fill out a survey based on bullying.

“One section asked them specifically, ‘Have you been bullied at NCCS?’” she said. “It [also] gave them a variety of choices where they’ve bullied.”

Other questions asked of the students included why the stu-

dent may have felt they were being bullied, such as being too skinny, too fat, or too wimpy.

“It wasn’t anything too intense,” Fleury said. “Most of the kids were finished within 15 minutes.”

The survey also had students answer questions about the school’s response to bullying, whether they had witnessed other students being bullied, and their general thoughts on bullying.

“We have gotten results and we’ve been sorting and working through those,” said Fleury. “I wasn’t really taken aback by anything. We know that it’s an issue. It’s an issue in every school.”

Now, the district is turning to the parents for their input.

“The parents survey has a little bit different questions and it’s not as lengthy,” Fleury said.

“We asked them what their feelings were on how the school has handled bullying situations in the past.”

The survey also asks parents to determine how they felt bullying had been handled by the school, either with their own child or with what they had heard about other children from other parents.

Fleury said the main reason for the surveys is to make any changes that may be necessary at the schools.

“Everyone is always talking about bullying as such a huge issue facing our students all

across the country and the world,” she said. “It’s important for us to get their feedback and what their feelings are in order to make school a safer place and a more positive environment for all our students.”

The survey for parents deadline is Friday, Feb. 18.

“We just really appreciate their input and their feedback on what they’re seeing and hearing,” Fleury said. “We just want to improve things for our school.”

Although nothing has been planned at this point, Fleury said she felt it may be helpful to have another survey come out at a later date, to see if the school’s new policies have made a difference in student bullying.

CVPH purchases CV Open MRI PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center has purchased Champlain Valley Open MRI from Soteria Imaging Services of Louisville, Ky. The facility, located at 118 Consumer Square, had closed for minor renovations as per an agreement with the New York State Department of Health, and reopened Feb. 7 CVPH president and chief executive officer Stephens Mundy said Soteria Imaging Services, the parent company of Champlain Valley Open MRI approached the medical center last summer about acquiring its Plattsburgh facility.

“We were pleased that Soteria sought our involvement and are most excited that we are able to extend our diagnostic capabilities by acquiring this resource,” Mundy said.

Mundy indicated that plans are to

maintain the business at its present location with few changes.

“They have done an excellent job running a business that has had a high degree of customer satisfaction from both patients and referring physicians. Our goal is to do our best to sustain or increase that level of satisfaction,” said Mundy.

He did note one advantage of having Open MRI as part of CVPH will be the immediate electronic access to the images by local physicians.

The digital images will become part of patients’ medical records.

As a nonprofit hospital, CVPH had to file and be granted a certificate of need by the New York State Department of Health. The Department of Health approved the purchase pending repair work to the facility and that the name be changed to CVPH Open MRI.

The importance of physical fitness for senior citizens E

xercise is the key to healthy aging.

Many older adults have heard of the benefits of exercise but may be unsure of where to start. There are many benefits of exercising as you age, and one of the best side effects is keeping you young. The more you move, the better you’ll feel. You don’t have to do anything too vigorous, nor is it recommended when just getting started with an exercise program. Starting slow is the way to go.

There are a few steps you should take before beginning an exercise program. First, you should get medical clearance from your health care provider especially if you have a pre-existing condition. They will tell you if there are any exercises you should avoid.You will want to start an exercise program slowly. You should not go “all out,” but instead ease into a program a little bit at a time.

Make sure to take the time to learn proper form and technique for all exercises to avoid

injuring yourself.Learn to recognize problems. If something doesn’t feel right, you should stop. Exercise should never hurt or make you feel bad.If you experience pain, feel dizzy or short of breath, experience chest pain or pressure, or break out in a cold sweat, you should stop exercising right away and contact your physician.

When developing a program you should remember to keep it varied. It will break up boredom and help to improve your overall health and wellness. Try to include the following four variables into your weekly routine.

Cardio exercise increases the body’s ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and helps remove toxins over a sustained period of time. In seniors, it can help lessen fa-

tigue, promote independence, and improve endurance. Examples of cardio exercise can include walking, cycling, swimming, hiking, tennis, dancing, etc.

Balance exercises help to maintain or improve standing and stability under a variety of conditions. It can help to reduce the risk of falling. Try standing on one foot while balancing and hold it for two seconds before returning to your start position and repeating on the other side. Hold onto a stable object if you need a little assistance.

Strength training helps to build muscle strength by using body weight, hand weights, machines, or bands. It helps to prevent the loss of bone mass, and helps to improve balance. Incorporating strength training into your weekly exercise routine can

help make day to day activities like opening a jar or getting in and out of a car and lifting objects easier.

Flexibility exercises challenge the joint’s ability to move freely through a full range of motion. It helps you to stay limber and improve your range of motion for ordinary physical activities such as tying your shoes, washing your hair, or playing with your grandchildren.

Sport fish benefitting from alewife diet A

re the perch in Lake Champlain getting bigger on average?

Just ask the alewives.

While fisheries biologists have their concerns about the long-term repercussions alewives will have on salmonoids like lake trout and landlocked salmon, in the short term they are making their presence known in the form of bigger sport fish.

Lake Champlain anglers are reporting larger fish on average across the board, and long-time records for the lake are being shattered every day.

In one recent outing, a buddy of mine landed a 14-inch perch that tipped the scale at a pound and three-quarters. That same day, three of us easily had 50 perch of 10 inches or better.

Personally, I’ve never seen it any better — and the fish are eating it up.

The catalyst for the change is pretty apparent. Cleaning one football-sized perch yesterday I counted 15 alewives in its stomach. And it probably burped up three or four more on the ice.

When biologists first identified the non-native Atlantic fish in Lake Champlain in 2008, many were quick to point out its potential negative effects. They die off in great numbers each spring, turning local beaches into a smelly mess of rotting fish.

They also contain a chemical that biologists say impacts the ability of salmonoids to reproduce — which has had a negative effect in the Great Lakes.

But the reality is no one can say with accuracy what the long-term effect will be on the Lake Champlain fishery. And no one will argue that the short-term effect has been bigger fish.

Norm St. Pierre, who owns Norm’s Bait and Tackle in Crown Point, said anglers are happily reporting just that.

He said one perch fisherman brought in three, five-gallon buckets filled with perch to sell, and the average weight of each was over one pound.

“There is no doubt they are having a huge impact on the lake,” St. Pierre said of the alewife population. “If people just wait a few years, I think you’ll see some absolutely huge fish.”

St. Pierre pointed to the state’s recent effort to stock brown trout in Lake Champlain and said they are growing at the rate of a few pounds per year, now tipping the scale at 7 and 8 pounds.

He said lake trout and salmon are prospering as well. The average for each has gone up several pounds since alewives were introduced as a forage fish.

“The average salmon used to be just a few pounds, now it is more like 5 to 7 pounds, and

now that they’ve broke the 18pound mark with lakers, it is just a matter of time before someone lands a 20-pounder,” St. Pierre said.

At the same time, St. Pierre believes the smelt population remains healthy. He said Mother Nature has forced them to adapt to live with alewives, forcing them deep in 100-200 feet of water where alewives don’t like to go.

“People just don’t fish for smelt there, which is why you don’t see the type of catches we used to have,” he said. “They are out in the main lake now, not in places where they were traditionally caught.”

Hamster - tekky’s best friend Caregiving and planning

ooking for an easyto-use video converter, perhaps something that will take a DVD vob file and convert it for iPod or Zune use? One easy-to-use and completely free application is called the Hamster Free Video Converter.

Hamster converts nearly any video format to another format for almost any modern device. Not only will it convert to the other formats, it makes the conversion quite easy. What makes it easy is how Hamster allows selection of the conversion format by simply choosing the device the converted video will be viewed on. The application works with Windows and allows drag-ndrop operation within a wizard-like environment.

To get started, first visit them on the Web at hamstersoft.com and download the program. I usually download to the desktop so I remember to delete the executable installation file afterward. Once the program is downloaded, double-click it to start the installation. Follow through the steps and make the choices desired.

The program is free but, like many free programs, it will want to do things like in-

stall a toolbar, change your search provider, or add a desktop shortcut during the installation.

By taking the time to review each screen, users can select desired choices and prevent most or all of those little annoying system changes.

ccording to Web site suite101.com, planning and preparing for caregiving before the responsibilities begin can greatly enhance the caregiving process for both caregiver and care receiver. Before embarking on the caregiving journey, prospective caregivers should thoroughly think through what it means to be a caregiver, including the personal sacrifices and adjustments that may occur. It is also important to have a good physician that is well-versed in aging-related concerns, to help guide and advise the caregiver.

Prospective caregivers should research the medical conditions of the care receivers as well, gathering information on any related treatments, therapies, and long-term prognoses. All concerned family members should be included in the decision-making process and the sooner the better. Primary caregivers should not hesitate to ask other family members for help, and should welcome help when it is offered. Support groups and educational workshops may be a great resource for prospective caregivers — this will give them reliable information on what it truly means to be a caregiver. Include the care receivers in the planning process as well.

It can be very reassuring for caregivers to know they are following the wishes of the older folks, especially if they are no longer able to communicate these wishes.

Visit nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted-living facilities, and bring the care receivers along as well. It is much easier to make sound decisions on living situations before a medical crisis occurs. Contact eldercare agencies to see what services are available, what they cost, and what the qualifications are. Make sure wills are current. This may also be a good time to discuss burial wishes. Finally, prospective caregivers need to make sure they include time for favorite activities in any schedule. This will help sustain the caregiver and will prevent caregiver burnout.

Buster is a large tan and black male hound who was purposely left in the shelter ’s play yard. He is a wonderful dog with a lot of personality. He is big but a gentle soul. Buster is neutered, heart worm negative, and up-to-date on his vaccines.

Taking a look at the governor’s plan to fix New York State solve the problems he said he could solve if we gave him the opportunity to go to Albany as our chief executive.

As I debated with my fingers on the mouse, left button I listen, right button I delete … I thought to myself, “What do I have to lose?” It’s only a recorded message, and I could practice giving him a piece of my mind. The governor started by thanking me for electing him, and I began reaching for the right mouse button. Then he said three things I could not disagree with: 1. We need to clean up Albany and restore integrity.

2. We need to get the economy running and create jobs.

3. We need to stop government overspending and overtaxing.

He got my attention.

I was hooked for the duration but still very suspicious. He went on to say HE was going to shake up the Albany establishment and, despite the attacks he knew would come his way, HE tells me HE is up to the task at hand.

Next he tells me New York state law automatically forces the budget to increase by 13 percent each year, which is six times the rate of inflation. And what’s worst, we spend far more than other states and get far less in re-

Growing the perfect onions

L

ike most gardeners, I started out growing onions from sets, which are small, immature onion bulbs. They were easy to grow, and I soon wanted to expand my variety horizons, but with onion sets, choices were limited. So, I turned to seeds. Growing from seed let me pick varieties to suit my own needs or whims — such as the desire for an early-season sweet onion or a late-season keeper. Colors range from dashing purple to pure white and numerous shades of yellow. Shapes and sizes vary, too, from the bottle-shaped “Italian Torpedo” to the plump perfection of “Ailsa Craig Exhibition.”

Most onion experts agree that, diversity aside, onions grown from seed perform better than those grown from sets. They are less prone to disease, they store better, and they bulb up faster.

Onions need a long growing season, so place your seed orders early to get a head start. On a cold winter night, it’s great fun to browse through those seed catalogs piling up beside the sofa and choose a few new varieties.

When choosing seed, make sure to order types suited to your climate and zone. Longday onions are best grown in the North,

where the summer daylight period is longer. These onions require at least 14 hours of light to bulb up. The plant grows foliage in cool spring weather, then forms bulbs during warm summer weather, triggered by the long days.

To grow onions from seed, simply sow seeds quarteinch deep in flats filled with soilless potting mix in late February. Onions germinate in just a week at around 70°F. Once the seeds have sprouted, I grow my onions under fluorescent lights, one warm white and one cool white bulb per fixture. I keep the lights just above the leaves, adjusting the lights as the plants grow.

I feed the seedlings with a water-soluble fertilizer at half strength every other time I water, being careful not to keep them too wet. I also keep the onions trimmed to be about 4 inches tall, so that the plants focus on root growth. Finally, I thin them to one every quarter-inch or so. By mid to late May, the onions are ready to be planted outside!

The governor highlights two examples: 1. New York is No. 1 in education spending yet rank 34th in performance.

2. New York is No. 1 in Medicaid spending but ranks 21st in performance.

He blames these conditions on our state working for the special interest groups and lobbyists instead of working for the people. And what’s really a surprise, he tells me this isn’t happening on just one side of the aisle but equally affects both Democrats and Republicans.

While the people and businesses of New York have been forced to deal with the realities of the economic collapse, our government hasn’t adjusted to these new economic times.

As I wait for the shoe to drop, he tells me he will cut his office’s budget by 10 percent, 5 percent upon taking office and 5 percent more in this coming budget. He intends to eliminate waste and duplication and cut the size of government. And, while other governors have given in to special interests, he assures me he will not be intimidated, will not back down and HE will get this job done.

So I’m thinking, Mr. Cuomo, what’s this going to cost me?

“The real power of the governor lies with the people of the state,” he said. “Democracy only works when the voice of the people rings strong and rings true. I need you to help me.”

I am left with only one thought: ”Mr. Cuomo, get this job done!” You needn’t tell me how pivotal these times are, nor how failure is not an option. We wasted far too much money and time and are now out of both. Mr. Cuomo, you asked for my help, well here it is, I’m with you. I’m buying what you’re selling! I want a leader to lead me through these difficult times. I’m with you, but boy you better not lead me down a primrose path. We are at a very serious time, and we’ve been let down by so many before you who’ve promised to solve these problems. I know you can’t do it alone, but please understand I’ve bought this sales pitch too many times before to not be very skeptical. How can I know you’ll give us a government as good as the people of this great state?

The answer is simple. What choice do we have?! Mr. Cuomo, please be a true and honest leader who does what he says he will do.

Be a servant of the people who elected you.

Please don’t let us down, Mr. Cuomo. Will be watching, rooting and helping as needed, but you sir, are driving the boat.

nfortunately, the snow we had on Wednesday forced the lieutenant governor to postpone our get together until a later date.

Over the years, and especially the last few years, I’ve become very suspicious of our elected officials and those who aspire to those positions. So when they come knocking, I now tend to get worried about their intentions. Unfortunately, the older you get the less trusting you become … like parts of your body that start sagging or the hair that keeps falling out. There’s not much you can do to prevent it. It’s just part of the aging process.

While they all say they are public servants, time and time again we discover, all too often after the fact, that they were really selfserving servants.

Thus was the case recently when our Assembly Representatives Sayword and Duprey opted to take early retirement one day and resumed their elected duties the next. Oh, I’m sure they had plenty of sound reasons for their actions. Bottom line, my state is financially broke and their actions did more for them personally then it did for me and my fellow taxpayers. Tell me how their actions helped me and not themselves?

But back to the governor ’s email. He asked me (and I’m sure many others) to listen to his 5-minute prepared speech asking for my help. My first thought was, “Here we go again.” Times are really tough; I and all New Yorkers will need to ante up to help Cuomo

I’m writing on behalf of the New York State Mooers Free Library Board. We are a public library that is able to function mostly through charitable contributions, volunteers, and fundraisers. This year certain sources of income have been late in making monetary contributions which has drastically affected our yearly budget.

In the past year we have been trying different tactics to reach out to the public and focus on their specific wants and needs. Our town is rather small and our library is even smaller. However, we have been making head way with all kinds of people and the community as a whole. We started using Lilly a therapy dog — where a child will come into the library and read for twenty minutes to her. This has been exemplary at improving their reading skills. Kids generally feel more relaxed with animals and Lilly is a great listener. We’ve also been holding computer training classes, WII interactive games, and many more different types of training sessions. But we desperately need donations to stay afloat this coming year.

The following information is about the Mooers Free Library Benefit Day on February 19, 2011. Lawrence P. Gooley; organizer of North Country Authors and the author of several books including, “A History of the Altona Flat Rock” and “Terror in the Adirondacks; the true story of serial killer Robert F. Garrow.” He will be accompanied by other local authors and they will be selling and signing their books and giving brief presentations on topics about their writing.

We will also have Lilly the therapy dog with her owner Alex available to meet and greet. There will be other books for sale with a wide genre; including adult and children’s and an afghan raffle. Donations welcome!

NCCS Class ‘72 reunion A group of classmates from the Northeastern Clinton Central School graduating Class of 1972 are getting together and preparing for our upcoming 40th year class reunion in 2012. Back in 1972 with Nixon about to be re-elected and our adult lives just beginning, it was hard to imagine we would be at this point. In each of our lives so much has undoubt-

So much has changed, and fortunately we can connect much easier.

However, there are still challenges to locating each and every one of us.

Not all of us have fallen under the spell of Facebook. So we are putting out a clarion call through the traditional print media for any and all of us who read or hear of this to help our ad hoc committee in assembling a solid mailing and contact list of all of us.

If each of you would contact one of the people listed below and share your contact information it would be greatly appreciated. From this list we will be able to plan the event and send invitations. Even though it is a year away it is important for us to plan early so we are all included and that the Reunion is a success. We all have so many stories to share, partners and spouses to be introduced to and memories to be savored.

End of the Military Timeline It is with a heavy heart that I pass on this information to my fellow re-enactors.

On September 1, 2010 the Old Stone Barracks property and the “Green Space” where we normally hold our re-enactments went up for sale. As of December, the Old Stone Barracks property has been sold, and the “Green Space” is currently for sale. (It’s a reasonable $436,200, www.cdcrealestate.com, if anyone wants to buy it for the museum.)

Unfortunately, we can no longer depend on the “Green Space” to hold re-enactments on. So as of now the Plattsburgh Military Timeline has been cancelled for 2011.

I’d like to send a huge thanks to everyone who supported the event over the last four years! This was one of the premier events of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association (www.battleofplattsburgh.org) and the main money maker for the museum in May. The Battle of Plattsburgh Association then turned this around into exhibits and education opportunities to keep the history we cherish so much alive.

The timeline was truly a grass roots event, without giant committees and big funding it was started by re-enactors as a way to have some fun and help the museum, and I’d like to thank again everyone who attended the event!

There are still a lot of “what if’s” out there and the possibility of starting up the event in the future once some of the dust has cleared and the questions with the “Green Space” has been answered.

Also the Battle of Plattsburgh Association still has a slice of property ripe for re-enacting opportunities, as demonstrated by our Pike’s Cantonment Campout in December (yes we did sleep outside) so if you’re interested in doing something on the museum grounds contact Kristina Parker-Wingler at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association (manager@battleofplattsburgh.org or 518-566-1814).

Happy birthday to Louella Papin I cannot let February 11, 2011 pass without wishing a happy 100th birthday to the late Louella Papin.

Louella was the editor of the North Countryman in the 1960s through 1976. Her highly popular “Over the Back Fence” was a great throw-back to the days when newspapers shared such intimate local details as “Mary Smith was home from college this week, spending time with her family,” or “Bill and Sue Jones recently visited his brother Bob and his wife, Becky, and their new baby girl in Albany. All are doing well.”

Louella helped brighten many a day during her lifetime, and her 100th birthday should not go unrecognized ... although she would be very upset for people to know how old she would be.

NEWS IN BRIEF Out of control car hits two ELLENBURG — William J. Phillips, 53, Malone, reportedly lost control of his vehicle Feb. 3 on Route 11, hitting a car driven by Anthony LaClair, 46, West Chazy. He then careened into Matthew Forcier, 41, Ellenburg Center, who was sent to CVPH Medical Center with minor injuries.

Trial date set for Pavone PLATTSBURGH — A trial date has been set for May 4 for Anthony Pavone, who is accused of having murdered Patricia Howard and Timothy Carter Jan. 31, 2010.

Pavone, 52, along with his attorney John Carney, District Attorney Andrew Wylie, and Judge Patrick McGill, met Jan. 31 to discuss the case. A pre-trial hearing has been set for May 3.

Delaney chosen to lead APA Review Board

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — A Clinton County man who grew up on a homestead farm and spent 18 years as a logger has been named chairman of the Adirondack Park Local Government Local Review Board.

On Jan. 26, Town of Saranac board member Gerald Delaney was elected unanimously and installed as chairman of the Review Board. He succeeds George Canon of Newcomb.

Delaney said that in his new position, he’d be working diligently to advocate on behalf of those who live and work in the Adirondacks.

Delaney said that he was well-versed on the issues important to local year-round residents.

“I worked on farms in the Adirondacks since my youth — I picked up a chainsaw at the age of 18 and worked in the woods as a logger, felling and skidding trees,” he said, noting that forest-related resources were important traditionally and in the present day — for both local culture and the economy.

“The logging and natural resources industries in the region have created the character of the communities and people of the Adirondacks — it’s who we are,” he added.

“If you take away the working forests, you destroy the local economy.”

Review Board Executive Director Fed Monroe said he recruited Delaney because he was well-informed on Adirondack issues and was committed to strike a balance between environmental conservation and the rights of residents of the Adirondacks.

“I have respect for his approach — he’s really interested in Adirondack issues, and he is highly motivated,” Monroe said.

Monroe said he’s been aware of Delaney’s activism on behalf of Adirondack citizens, through both their work with the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages. Delaney has been a member of the panel for two and a half years, Monroe said.

“He’s got a lot of energy, and he has a great perspective,” Monroe said.

Delaney has deep roots in the Adirondacks. He grew up on his family’s farm, established in 1899.

Delaney said Jan. 26 one of his top concerns was the state’s unrestrained acquisition of land in the Adirondacks — taking woodlands out of production.

“The Adirondacks became what they are because of the stewardship of large and small landowners,” he said. The state erodes that by buying up the working forests.”

Delaney added that logging was vital for providing income for families in the Adirondacks.

“With the state buying up land, so many entry-level jobs are now gone,” he said.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., there will be a Mooers Free Library Benefit Day at the Mooers Fire Station on Route 11 to help raise donations needed for the library.

“This year with the budget cuts, we’re really finding that we’re really just going over what we have for money,” explained Mooers Free Library Board public relations officer Katharine Evans. “It’s been really tight this year.”

Treasurer Debbie Dragoon said they’re hoping to raise about $500 at the benefit, but that the state funding has left them with a $3,196 shortfall.

Dragoon said her husband, Scott Dragoon came up with the idea for the benefit and the idea snowballed.

“He just came up with doing the fundraising thing and thought Larry Gooley would be a great person to have and we didn’t realize that not only is he a great person, but he’s a publisher for other authors,” said Dragoon.

Gooley, operator of Bloated Toe Enterprises, organizer of North Country Authors, and the author of nine books including “Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. “Alex Lamberton has a therapy dog where she comes to the library and she has students who are afraid of reading ... read to the dog,” said Dragoon. “She’s going to be there representing the program so people are aware of it.”

“I believe she has seven students right now she’s been working with regularly and now are starting to sign out books [from the library],” she added.

With the different types of events being held at the benefit, Dragoon believes it is truly a family event.

“I think it’s going to be a great community event that is one that doesn’t happen very often to get so many authors in one area,” she said. “It’s a way to bring the family together.

With all these electronics, we’re getting away from books and I think we need to return to books and old ways and traditional ways of learning.”

Duprey arrested for DWI PLATTSBURGH — Tina M. Duprey, 44, Chazy, was arrested Feb. 5 for allegedly driving while intoxicated on Route 9.

Duprey allegedly failed a field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11.

She was charged with a felony DWI and ticketed for moving from her lane unsafely, crossing road-hazard markings and driving on a cell phone.

Champlain Bridge group seeks county support

At least, that is the hope of Lake Champlain Bridge Coalition officials, who presented their preliminary plans for an opening event to celebrate the dedication of the new bridge between Crown Point and Chimney Point to members of the Essex County Board of Supervisors Feb. 4.

“What we are looking for is your support,” Karen Hennessy of the coalition said, adding that by support, she was not referring to funds.

“We do not want to ask for any taxpayer dollars as far as looking for money from you, but we do realize that for events like we are looking at we are going to need the help of departments like the highway and the sheriffs to make things work,” Hennessey said.

Moeller seeks best for town as citizen of the year

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com TUPPER LAKE — Mark Moeller says it really isn’t about him, or even his peers.

Moeller, the owner/operator of CBNA Insurance who was recently named as the Citizen of the Year by the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce, said he spends his time in several volunteer organizations trying to improve the town he grew up in for the future generations.

“I do this more for our kids,” Moeller said. “I’m not worried about myself or

about my future. All I hope for is that through what we do, the kids will have an opportunity to come back to where they grew up and be able to find meaningful employment.”

Moeller said when he was a teen, he felt that there was no future for him in the area, but soon learned that his heart was with the community he loved.

“When I went to college, I never thought I was going to return,” Moeller said. “After my service in the military, I realized how special this place was. I wanted to be here and I wanted to help.”

Moeller is the oldest of nine children, who he said have all returned to their

roots and live in or around the Tupper Lake area.

“Tupper Lake has a long history of volunteerism, and it makes it a special place to live,” Moeller said. “There is a strong sense of volunteerism, and I am just happy to be a part of that.”

Moeller said he never started to work with local organizations in the quest to receive awards or accolades, and that he hopes to help even more in the coming years.

“Most folks will say that they are humbled when something like this happens, and I truly feel the same way,” Moeller said.

Village official cited after crash TUPPER LAKE — The code enforcement officer for the village of Tupper Lake was cited for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated after a crash Jan. 27 that left him seriously injured.

According to reports, 43-year-old Pete Edwards was operating his snowmobile at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of his sled while negotiating a turn.

The accident occurred near the Boy Scout Camp Massaweepie in the town of Piercefield.

Edwards and his sled ended up on the ice below a steep embankment, and rescue personnel say it took some effort to bring him to safety. He was later transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., where he’s being treated for injuries to his lungs, spleen, hips, and ribs.

Edwards is the code enforcement officer for the village of Tupper Lake. State police say charges are pending and an investigation into the accident is considered ongoing.

Two injured in Bloomingdale crash BLOOMINGDALE — A Route 3 crash Feb. 1 resulted in two local residents being transported to the Adirondack regional Medical Center.

Michael W, Kelly, 69, and Janice Curtis, both of Vermontville, were transported by the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad to AMC after the four-door sedan Kelly was driving struck Curtis’ 2007 Hyundai minivan.

Kelly was ticketed for failure to keep right, and he had blood drawn for a toxicology test.

Keeseville man injured on snowmobile LOON LAKE — George E. Dorr, 66, of Keeseville, suffered a right hip fracture in a snowmobile accident at about on Goldsmith Road in the town of Franklin Jan. 28.

Dorr went off the road and hit a culvert, according to state police. The Saranac Lake Rescue Squad responded and transported Dorr to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Port Henry man pleads to petit larceny ELIZABETHTOWN — On Feb. 4, John Maye, 47, of Port Henry, pled guilty to petit larceny and made restitution in the amount of $2,350.

Maye was charged with five counts of offering a false instrument for filing first degree, class E felonies, and four counts of Welfare Fraud fifth degree, class A misdemeanors.

It is alleged Maye defrauded the Home Energy Assistance Program of between 2006 and 2010 by submitting applications containing false statements. He was arraigned on Dec. 16, before town justice William Garrison in Elizabethtown. The case was transferred to the Town Court Town of Moriah where a plea was accepted by town justice Jeff Farnsworth.

Man hurt in snowmobile accident TUPPER LAKE — A local man was taken to the hospital following a snowmobile accident on Tupper Lake Saturday evening.

Tupper Lake-based state police say 33-year-old Kathryn Santana of Tupper Lake was operating a snowmobile with one passenger aboard – 44-year-old Edward D. Annesse, also of Tupper Lake – when the sled hit an embankment.

The collision ejected Annesse from the snowmobile.

Police say he suffered a fractured clavicle and a concussion.

Annesse was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, where he was treated and released.

School district taxpayers asked to weigh in on budget

According to preliminary figures, Scott said the proposed reduction in state aid funding for Peru Central would amount to $2.6 million for the 2011-12 school

year. The bulk of the reduction would be felt in the school district’s general operating aid fund.

“This proposed set of reductions would be the largest in the history of New York State,” said Scott. “It’s certainly the case that business as usual will not be going on as usual in the years ahead, given the scope of revenue reductions that rural schools are anticipating.”

That has led the school district administration and school district’s budget advisory committee

Outdoor program slated for Feb. 23-25 CADYVILLE — The Clinton County Youth Bureau and Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will co-host a Family Winter Outdoor Adventure Program Feb. 23-25. This free program will introduce youth, 7 years of age and older and their families, to such skills as snowshoeing, team work and outdoor leadership skills. Youth will also have the opportunity to play snowshoe Disc Golf and many other outdoor games. Previous snowshoeing experience is not required and all equipment will be provided.

listening last year. I forecast this will be another season for listening.”

Regardless of the outcome of the governor ’s budget proposal, Scott said he’s confident the same standard of education will be provided for students — it may just be with less resources.

“New York has a strong history of providing programs for its children in terms of public schooling.

That’ll continue,” he said. “How it’s done, will be in the balance.”

Clinton County Court sentencings PLATTSBURGH — The following sentencings, furnished by the Clinton County District Attorney’s office, were recently recorded in Clinton County Court.

Steven Parrott, 19, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal possession stolen property, aggravated driving while intoxicated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. Parrott was sentenced to one to three years in prison and ordered to pay fines, DNA sample fee, surcharges and restitution.

Jason Kozilsky, 26, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to a Class E felony DWI, operating a motor vehicle in violation of restrictions and speed in zone. Kozilsky was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to install an ignition interlock device. He was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges and fees.

Ryan Ledwith, 27, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Ledwith was sentenced to six months in jail, five years probation, and 100 hours community service.

He was further ordered to pay restitution, surcharges and fees.

Bradley Hathaway, 27, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to Class E felony DWI, firstdegree aggravate unlicensed operation and unlawful possession of marijuana. Hathaway was sentenced to 60 days in jail, five years probation and 75 hours community

service. He was further ordered to install an ignition interlock device and pay related fines surcharges and a crime victim fee.

Angel Rodriguez, 41, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to Class E felony DWI. Rodriguez was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison, had his license revoked and ordered to install an ignition interlock device. He was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges, restitution and a DNA sample fee.

Gregory O’Connell, 53, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to four counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

O’Connell was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison on each count to run concurrently. He was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges, restitution and a DNA sample fee.

Patrick Curry, 39, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and misdemeanor DWI. Curry was sentenced to 5 years probation, alcohol evaluation and follow-up, and ordered to install an ignition interlock device. He was ordered to pay fines, surcharges and fees.

Michael Hebert, 43, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree burglary. Hebert was sentenced to 2 to 6 years on each count to run concurrent with other case and served an orders of protection. He was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges, restitution and a DNA sample fee.

Melanie Desso, 33, Plattsburgh, pleaded

guilty to misdemeanor aggravated DWI and failure to keep right. Desso was sentenced to one weekend in jail, 3 years probation and 50 hours community service. He was ordered to pay fines, surcharges and fees.

Steven Smith, 49, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to Class E felony DWI. Smith was sentenced to 5 years probation, 75 hours community service, and ordered to install an ignition interlock device. He was ordered to pay fines, surcharges and fees.

Shannon Bowen, 26, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to Class E felony aggravated DWI and wrong way on a one way street. Bowen was sentenced to 30 days in jail; 5 years probation, 50 hours community service and had her license revoked. She was further ordered to install an ignition interlock device and pay fines, surcharges and fees.

United Way tops $750,000 fundraising goal for 2010

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Even with a loftier fundraising campaign, the United Way of the Adirondack Region Inc. met and exceeded its $750,000 goal.

The nonprofit organization, which encompasses Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties, raised a total of $756,200, as announced by the campaign team Feb. 4.

“This is a momentous occasion,” said local United Way executive director John C. Bernardi. “In many ways, the United Way is a barometer of the community. And, I’m pleased to report that the barometric pressure of our region remains very high.”

Previously, for the last three years, the campaign goal was at $700,000, down from the 2007 goal of $750,000.

“It feels great,” said Bernardi of getting back to the goal from 2007. “Obviously the economy has created a challenge for us for the last three

years or so. We face that challenge again as we went into this campaign, but at the same time we have added another county to our service area. We felt that it was important, despite the economy, that we raise the goal and we raise the expectations of the region.”

Bernardi also took time United Way during the meeting to not only announce the total raised, but what that money means.

“We’re happy that we made the goal, but a number is just a number,” he said. “What is more important is the impact that our United Way is able to make throughout the region.”

“We anticipate that our network of health and human service organizations, 36 partner agencies, will provide some level of service to over

80,000 people during 2011,” Bernardi added.

“It’s our friends, it’s our neighbors, it’s our family members and because of that we’re able to make a great impact.”

Kirk A. Stallsmith, chair of this year ’s campaign and general manager of the Plattsburgh Georgia-Pacific facility, executive director is already looking toward next year ’s campaign and beyond.

“I’d like to look at Franklin County and challenge employers and companies out in Franklin County to get actively involved in 2012 if you didn’t take the opportunity in the 2011 campaign,” he said. “For those that perhaps did not get the opportunity or perhaps things were a bit tight this year ... we’re going to come knocking on your door ... to help keep that spirit alive.”

“Each book relates to the others and each adds to a larger understanding of the overall theme of the series, the relationship between the individual and the modern world,” Davies explained. “My job is to set the stage for the discussion and then step back and let the participants deal with the many meanings of these interesting books.”

“I hope that people will have a better understanding of the problems ... that the modern world presents us with,” he added. “Along with the many problems of globalization, we now have an opportunity to understand, and positively influence other cultures and societies as never before.”

Although the series may sound similar to a book club, both Palmer and Davies feel it is so much more than that.

“The discussion is guided by a college professor who knows the series topic well, can keep us all on track, and can help guide our reading,” said Palmer. “The books are also not necessarily ones you find on Oprah’s book list, or on the best-seller list. This helps us to move out of our comfort zone and read something we may think we know nothing about ... and maybe we’ll find we really all have something in common.”

Palmer first applied for the grant based on the books offered in the series.

“The various series the council offers looked like books I and others would enjoy reading,” she said. “As a post-college professional, I do not often have the opportunity for discussions on a specific topic like this grant offers. What I also find exciting is the chance to have a humanities professor to facilitate an intelligent

discussion — something we are not often blessed with once out of college.”

Each session is 90 minutes and will be held once a month. At the first meeting, planned for Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., participants will receive the first book. The following meetings

Stallsmith also sees a $1 million goal as a possibility at some point.

“From a personal perspective, I really believe that with the generosity of this three-county region that down the road ... there is absolutely no reason that the United Way of the Adirondack Region can’t achieve a million dollar campaign goal as an organization,” he said. “Mainly due to the fact that we get that type of demand from our member agencies for that kind of support. I believe the three-county region is capable of achieving that sometime in the future.”

Davies, a history teacher at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, was asked to be facilitator by museum curator Amanda Palmer, after the museum received a grant from the New York State Council for Humanities.

“I was interested in the series because it relates to my teaching,” said Davies. “In teaching Modern Global History at SUNY Plattsburgh, I tell my students that we can’t understand the world we live in without understanding the history of global interactions. This series goes beyond a strict historical approach to reach that understanding.”

The grant will provide four books, on loan for the series, to participants — chosen by Kate Hallgren, a graduate student at the City University of New York.

The series is a part of NYSCH’s reading and discussion program “Reading Between the Lines,” and according to Davies, “are meant to reflect a wide range of perspectives — historical, literary, political and economic — in trying to understand the place of the individual in the modern world.”

The four books, according to NYSCH’s Web site, www.nyhumanities.org, are: • “African Queen: The Reality Life of Hottentot Venus,” by Rachel Holmes: A biography of an early 19th century African woman who was taken from her home in southern Africa and put on display in London and Paris. The book uses this woman’s story to explore the historical connections of colonial trade, military conflict and ideas of racial difference between Europe and the people of its colonies.

• “White Teeth,” by Zadie Smith: It picks up on the themes of “African Queen” by looking at the effects of European empires on the modern world. The novel is set in the late 20th century London. It focuses on the experiences of immigrants to that city, recreating the smells, sounds and feel of life in immigrant communities there.

• “The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation,”

by Sid Jacobsen and Ernie Colon: Uses a comic book format to report the key findings of the 9/11 Commission. It provides a serious and

Guidance secretary to retire after 50 years of service

SARANAC — Jeanne Kelso liked working for the Saranac Central School District so much, she decided to stick around for oh, only the past 50 years.

Kelso, a secretary with the Saranac High School guidance office, will retire Tuesday, Feb. 15, after a half-century of service. She began her employment at the high school in 1961, applying for the position while working in the office of CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

“I heard about the position. It was sort of a new thing,” she recalled. “I think it was the first time they had a high school guidance office.”

Kelso lived near the school, so a shorter commute was one of the first benefits of throwing her hat into the ring for the job.

“And, I liked the idea of the hours at the school when I was raising my daughter,” she said. “It was convenient.”

During her time with the school district, Kelso said she’s seen more

and more responsibilities added to her plate as the district grew.

“It’s just like any job. It just got bigger and more involved over the years,” she said.

Some of her additional responsibilities are ones Kelso decided to take upon herself, such as holding the office of president of the local Civil Service Employees Union for nearly 20 years and serving on its board of directors. Kelso also chaired the statewide budget committee and still serves as a member of statewide education committee, giving her more to do than your run-of-the-mill secretary.

“I kind of combined two careers,” she said.

At age 84, Kelso’s also seen many changes while at Saranac, most notably in technology, with

the use of computers.

“That’s my biggest nemesis,” laughed Kelso. “I really don’t like computers.”

However, she has adapted.

Well, sort of.

“You do what you have to do,” she added with a chuckle.

Every memory from her time with the school district has been a “good memory,” Kelso said. She attributes that to her fellow employees and the students who she’s shared countless hours with over the past five decades.

“I’ve always been fortunate I’ve had very nice co-workers and faculty. That makes a big difference,” she said, adding the students will be among those she misses seeing most. “The best part is when they come back and they’ve had success. And, they do come back to visit.”

Though her retirement won’t be official until next week, Kelso already has plans for what she’ll do to enjoy her next chapter in life — or, more to the point, where she’ll enjoy it.

“I’ve already bought a condo in Myrtle Beach,” she said. “So, in March or so I’ll be moving down

there. I’m sick of shoveling snow.”

Kelso did, however, leave behind parting words of advice for others wanting to follow in her footsteps of having a long and ful-

filling career.

“If you like it, stay. If you don’t like it, do something different,” she said.

What’s up at the VICs? Colleges reinventing former APA visitor centers

PAUL SMITHS — Fresh snow blanketed tree branches in the forest, the sun glowed in the blue sky, and temperatures hovered around 20 degrees. Ski event coordinators dream of conditions like these, and Saturday, Jan. 29 had all the makings for a day filled with family fun.

Yet, as the Chili Ski Tasting event got under way at the Paul Smiths VIC, everyone was a little uneasy.

It was the same building, but with a new owner. Paul Smith’s College officials didn’t know what to expect, and, as they searched for light switches and electrical outlets in their newest building, they had one big question on their minds: Would people come and enjoy themselves like they had for the past decade of ski festivals when the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) owned the building?

By early afternoon, their question had been answered, and they breathed a collective sigh of relief as dozens of families did indeed come and enjoy themselves, eating chili and cake made by culinary arts students, skiing and snowshoeing on the vast trail system groomed the day before, and taking sleigh rides with two of the college’s draft horses. The smiles were proof that people had a good time, and the event —aimed at showing everyone that the trails are still open to the public — was deemed a success.

While this was the first event since Paul Smith’s College took over the 24,500-square-foot building from the APA on Jan. 1, the transformation from a Visitor Interpretive Center to the college’s version of the VIC is still in its formative stages.

Officials at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), too, are still trying to define the role of their new Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) in Newcomb, for-

merly known as the Newcomb VIC, after taking over the 6,000square-foot building on July 1, 2010 and the public programming on Jan. 1.

After all, it was only a year ago when then Gov. David Paterson announced in his budget address that the APA would be closing the VICs in Paul Smiths and Newcomb to save over $500,000 annually and help the state close a multi-billion-dollar budget gap. And, as 2010 progressed and the VIC Transition Steering Committee was formulating ideas to keep the two centers open to the public, in one form or another, both colleges had less than a year to come up with solid plans that would fund the buildings’ operations.

For many, Jan. 29 was an emotional day at the Chili Ski Tasting event in Paul Smiths.

Event organizers from the college and the VIC friends group, the Adirondack Park Institute, were hoping for a warm public reception. The longtime volunteers who had once assisted APA staff with environmental education programs and special events were now working with a new owner they don’t know very well. Some former VIC staff and current APA staff were enjoying the festivities, witnessing history in the making while reminiscing about the many memories they had made there. And the public was simply curious.

Susan Sweeney, Paul Smith’s College director of human resources, helped organize the Jan. 29 event and was taking photographs during the day.

She serves on the VIC Transition Steering Committee and has made many memories herself at the VIC. “There is so much nostalgia here,” Sweeney said in an interview the day before the event.

“We want to take what is here, modify it and improve it.”

This year, Paul Smith’s College will begin transforming the VIC from an interpretive center into a public building with exhibits, programs and new tenants, including the Adirondack Center for Writing, which has outgrown its office space in the college’s administration building. In addition to environmental education, there

will be an emphasis on outdoor recreation and the arts. And new trail events will be held on the VIC property, which was initially a 2,885-acre preserve owned by the college and leased by the APA. A new lease agreement in 2009 reduced the preserve to about 1,400 acres.

The college owns more than 14,000 acres.

The chili, hot drinks and cake made for a party-type atmosphere on Jan. 29. It showed that the building was slowly coming back to life again after sitting empty, save for a few maintenance workers, for 28 days.

APA staff had closed the building to the public at the end of the day on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 — Columbus Day weekend — so they could pack up and move out before literally giving it to Paul Smith’s College on Jan. 1. The trails remained open throughout the transition.

In Newcomb, the two-phase transition began in June 2010 and finished six months later.

Originally, the Paul Smiths and Newcomb buildings were expected to be handed over to new owners on Jan. 1, 2011, with the APA staff given that long to keep their jobs; however, since the SUNY-ESF fiscal year begins on July 1, it was decided to give the building to the college — “turn-key” style — at that time. Therefore, June 30 was the last day the APA owned the Newcomb VIC. APA staff continued to offer public programming there until Dec. 30, their last day of APA employment. SUNY-ESF took over programming on Jan. 1 at the newly named Adirondack Interpretive Center, which sits on 236 acres in the college-managed Huntington Wildlife Forest.

Like his colleagues at Paul Smith’s College, Paul Hai, program coordinator at SUNYESF’s AIC and nearby Adirondack Ecological Center, is also trying to reassure the public that the Newcomb building is still open. And while the mis-

sion will change, with interpretation of the Adirondack Park’s natural and cultural resources as a focus rather than visitor services, the college has made it clear that there are many years of public education left at the Newcomb facility.

“We are here for the long haul,” said Hai, who has worked closely with VIC staff on programs since moving to Newcomb in 2008. “The APA made a tough choice … We're really hoping we can lessen that blow by keeping this center open.”

In all, the APA cut eight fulltime staff positions at the VICs in December, four at each facil-

ity. Two employees from the Paul Smiths building were able to transfer to APA headquarters in Ray Brook.

Star Lake naturalist Peter O’Shea has known many of the APA employees since he began leading trail walks at the Paul Smiths VIC when it opened in 1989 and the Newcomb VIC when it opened in 1990. He was mingling with some of his friends at the Chili Ski Tasting event after taking a snowshoe trip on the Boreal Life Trail. He saw tracks of a river otter, fisher, red fox, two coyotes, half a dozen white-tailed deer, and a snowshoe hare. A former volunteer, he was also one of the

curious visitors.

“It’s a wonderful day,” O’Shea said, looking around at the lobby full of people. “They (Paul Smith’s College) have made a wonderful start.”

Although the Paul Smiths VIC and Newcomb AIC are still open to the public, neither facility will continue their former role as official New York State visitor centers, welcoming the traveling public to the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park. Annual visitation has been between 20,000 and 30,000 at the Newcomb center and between 60,000 and 75,000 at the Paul Smiths center.

“The Adirondack Park is now without an official visitor center,” O’Shea said. “So there is something that is missing and the state will have to rectify.”

The Newcomb AIC building is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and the trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. Call (518) 582-2000 for more information. Admission is free. keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — Tom Ryan knows what to do when he gets the basketball in his hands.

He also knows who to thank for getting it there.a Ryan, the senior center for the Beekmantown boys varsity basketball team, was quick to point out that he had a lot of help when it came to scoring 1,000 career points.

“There’s no way I could have done this without the guards on this team,” Ryan said after the Eagles game against AuSable Valley Feb. 3. “They do a great job each night getting the ball up the court and getting me the ball in a great position to score.”

Ryan showed humility in reaching the milestone point mark, with 22 of his 29 points in the game coming directly off plays that involved a pass from a teammate. Ryans baskets were involved in eight of his team’s 17 assists.

“Tom is a consistent scorer,” Eagles head coach Ryan Converse said after the game.

“This is something that he has worked to achieve and something that he has wanted to do for a long time.”

“It’s a dream come true,” Ryan said. “I have been working for this ever since my freshman year.”

Chazy girls hockey set for frozen four CHAZY — The Chazy Lady Eagles girls hockey team jumped out to an early lead less than four minutes into its Upstate Girls Hockey League quarterfinal game against Alexandria Bay Feb. 4.

They didn’t stop there.

The Eagles scored the first nine goals of the game in a 9-1 victory to send them to Massena for the semifinal round on Feb. 11.

Jesse Huber scored the first of her two goals to open the scoring at the 3:22 mark of the first period on assists from Ashley Terry and Sara LoTemplio. Huber scored her other goal of the game to open the second period on assists from LoTemplio and Alex Betrus.

LoTemplio also added a pair of goals to the offense, scoring her first in the opening period unassisted and her second early in the third period on assists by Huber and Betrus.

Amanda Peterson scored the first of her two goals to cap the scoring in the opening period on an assist from Bailey Waterbury, while scoring her second with less than a minute to play in the second period on an assist from Betrus.

Alexis Guay added a goal in the second period and an assist to Chelsea Guay in the third period, while Emily Raville scored in the second period on assists from Waterbury and Peterson.

Saranac Lake 2, Chazy 2 The Lady Red Storm made not have made the playoffs, but they were not going to let the top seed in the tournament out of their house without giving the Lady Chazy Eagles a scare.

Emily Raville scored both of the goals for the Eagles, the first coming as an unassisted tally in the first period and the second off assists from Bailey Waterbury and Amanda Peterson 4:19 into the third period.

Shannon Muldowney then opened the scoring for the Red Storm with 9:09 remaining in the period off assists from Alex Covet and Meadow Hackett. With 35 seconds remaining, Maggie Darrah, who entered the game as an extra attacker after goalie Erin Urquhart was pulled, scored the equalizer to send the game into overtime, where the teams would remain tied.

Urquhart made 21 saves for the Red Storm, while Christina Emery made 23 saves for the Eagles.

CLINTONVILLE — They knew it was coming.

With a 51-39 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Beekmantown varsity boys basketball team had seen that their opponents, AuSable Valley, had plenty of experience when it came to coming back late.

Sure enough, the Patriots outscored the Eagles 19-10 in the final eight minutes, but a game-tying, buzzer-beating three-pointer from the hand of Ryan Lee went halfway through the rim, bounced around a couple of times and then popped out of the basket and to the ground, letting the Eagles escape with a 61-58 victory Feb. 3.

“We were expecting the run,” Eagles head coach Ryan Converse said after the game. “Basketball is a game of runs.

AuSable is a very good team. Tonight, we were tough enough to stave off the run and win.”

The Patriots, who had scored heart-stopping wins against Saranac and Saranac Lake in the week previous, again turned a 13-point fourth quarter deficit into a twopoint game with just 1:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.

However, the team missed four shots in the final minute, including the shot by Lee to tie the game after Keegan Ryan had hit the front end of a one-and-one to give the Eagles a three point lead.

“We got the looks, they didn’t fall,” Patriots head coach Jamie Douglass said after the game. “There is no give up in these guys and to get a performance like we did out of Ryan Lee off the bench on senior night was special. It was a team effort to get back into this game.”

The Eagles used a 18-2 run in the first and second quarters and an 11-2 run to end the first have with a 39-23 lead.

“We execute our offense in runs,” Converse said. “When we execute properly, anyone can get going.”

Against the Patriots, it was senior Tom Ryan, who scored 11 of the team’s 13 points in their opening run and seven of the Eagles nine fourth quarter points en route to surpassing the 1,000-career point plateau.

“We were looking for a chance to get going, and that run kept the energy up,” said Ryan. “We knew we had a chance if we could handle the press, and our guards did a great job tonight doing that.”

Ryan ended with 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots, while Brother Keegan Ryan scored nine points to go with eight rebounds, including the final point of the game after having previously missed on the front end of a one-and-one attempt.

“I had the same thing happen in Moriah where I missed on my first chance and then hit the next time up,” Keegan said. “The last time on the line, I was just thinking that there was no way I was going to let my brother score his 1,000th point in a loss.”

Foster Ebersole added 10 points and five assists, including two key three-pointers in the third quarter, while Tyler Frennier scored nine points and recorded three steals. Devon Anderson added four points and six rebounds.

For the Patriots, TJ Burl scored 24 of his 28 points in the second half, as he and Brody Douglas scored all but two of the team’s 19 fourth quarter points. Burls added 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and four blocked shots to the Patriots effort, while Douglas scored 16 points to fo with four steals. jordan Coolidge scored eight points to go with five assists and four steals, with Connor Manning adding four points and 10 rebounds and Lee scoring two points to go with seven offensive rebounds and two steals.

Saranac Lake 5, PHS 1 Kyle Dora and Grant Strack scored two goals apiece as the Red Storm beat the Hornets Jan. 31.

Strack scored the first goal of the game in the opening period on assists from Dora and Devin Darrah, while scoring his last goal with less than five minutes to play in the second period off assists from Nicholas Margo and Quinn Urquhart.

Dora scored a power play goal with less than a minute left in the opening period on assists by Darrah and Pat McHugh, while scoring his second goal with just over three minutes gone by in the second period on an unassisted tally.

Darrah closed the scoring for the Red Storm in the third period, with Dora and Dalton Demarco assisting.

Tyler O’Neill made 19 saves for the squad.

The Hornets got their lone tally from Marshall Maynard, who scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period off an assist from Alex Maston. Robbie Knowles turned aside 27 shots for the Hornets.

Fitness center open to community

Beekmantown sweeps at bowling championships

BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Fitness Center is currently open to district residents Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Those wishing to use the fitness center must have proof of residency and completed waivers to attend an orientation session.

The Beekmantown boys and girls bowling teams hit for the most pins in sweeping the CVAC championship match Feb. 5.

The Eagles finished 198 pins ahead of second place Peru on the boys side and 618 pins in front of runner-up Peru on the girls side.

Saranac, Beekmantown B, Northeastern Clinton, AuSable Valley, Ticonderoga, Plattsburgh, Willsboro and Peru B rounded out the top 10 for the boys, while Plattsburgh, NCCS, Saranac, Ticonderoga, AuSable Valley and Willsboro rounded out the top eight for the girls teams.

Frostbite Run this Sunday ROUSES POINT — The Northern Lights Track Club and the Rouses Point Fire Department will host the 2011 5K Frostbite Run Sunday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m.

Race-day registration is $15 and $50 for a family of four or more.

Registration will be held at the Rouses Point Fire Department, 40 Lake St., from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.

Saranac takes part in Dartmouth Relays SARANAC — The Saranac High School indoor track team took part in the Dartmouth Relays in early January, competing with several Northeastern state athletes.

The Saranac boys 4x400 meter relay set a school record of 3:38:08, and placed seventh out of 24 teams. The relay team was made up of Micah Patterson, Casey Jackson, Jake Martindale, and Brandon Bushey.

John Brown placed 11th in the high jump out of 26 contenders. Jake Spear placed ninth out of 17 athletes in the triple jump.

Maxine Rock placed 22nd out of 93 runners in the 300 meters. Alex Farrington placed 36th out of 76 in the 55-meter hurldes.

Tiffany Helms placed 55th out of 97 in the 55-meter dash.

Varsity wrestling Peru 69, NAC 9 Arik Robinson added another accomplishment to a resume that already reads like a novel: Peru all-time wins leader.

The senior wrestler and three-time defending state champion scored his 173rd career win with a forfeit win at 112 against NAC Feb. 3, breaking the previous mark of 172 set by Joe Millett.

Along with Robinson, Patrick “Pappy” Hogan scored his 163rd career win with a third period pin at 130, moving into third place on the Peru wins list.

Josh Wright started the dual meet for Peru with a second period pin at 140, while Brandon Moore scored a 7-5 decision at 160, Brandon Allen scored a 4-2 decision at 171 and Colby Way scored a 7-5 victory at 189.

Mike Riley notched a first period pin for six of the Bobcats points at 215, while Scott Kellett scored a 6-4 decision to give NAC their other three points at 96.

Peru returned to the winners side of the ledger after that, as Kyler Agoney scored a pin seven seconds into the second period at 103, Alex Pugh scored a second period pin at 119 and Jacob Goodeau scored a second period pin at 125.

Beekmantown 52, Saranac 16 Beekmantown 76, AVCS 6 Nick Bushey, Hayden Head and Brandon Jaubut each had two wins in a pair of dual meets for the Eagles against the Chiefs and Patriots Feb. 4.

Bushey scored a 4-2 sudden victory win over Ben Perry in his first match at 189, set-

ting up a potential showdown and match of the night as the two may meet again at the Section VII championships on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Bushey also Patrick “Pappy” Hogan and the Peru Indians are the favorites to win the Section VII scored a pin wrestling tournament Feb. 12. The winners in each weight class earn a trip to Albany and against the the NYSPHSAA championship matches.

NAC wins Lowell tourney, Thompson scores solo title Scott Kellett, Justin Kellett and Mike Riley all finished atop the podium as the Bobcats scored a first place victory at the Jason Lowell Tournament in Jericho, Vt. David Thompson of AuSable Valley also finished the event with a perfect record as the Patriots finished in 12th place.

Max Marte and Caleb Sample finished in third place for the Bobcats, while Matt Carter, Matt Bryer and Matt Lashway finished in fourth place and Brandon Edwards finished in sixth place.

For the Patriots, Kodie Simpson added a third place finish while Dan Papa and Matt LaMere finished in sixth place.

Mats Dahmen scored victories in the 100 butterfly individually and in the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay events as the Hornets beat the Patriots Feb. 1.

Nate Leopard added wins in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay for the Hornets.

Hank McCormick won the 100 breaststroke for the Patriots, while Ben Ford won the 500 freestyle.

In a return engagement on Feb. 4, Dahmen again picked up four wins, including the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 400 free relay and 200 medley relay.

For the Patriots, Ford scored wins in the 100 backstroke, while McCormick was atop the podium in the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

LAWTON, Okla. — Army Pvt. Micah Morse has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill.

During the nine weeks of training, Morse studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Morse, a 2005 Peru Senior High School graduate, is the son of Roger J. and Amelian N. Morse, Plattsburgh.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Army Pvt. Brandon Stone has graduated from the infantryman one station unit training at Fort Benning. The training consisted of basic infantry training and advanced individual training.

During the nine weeks of basic combat training, Stone received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

The advanced individual training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area.

Stone, a 2008 Beekmantown High School graduate, is the son of Colleen Carter and Shawn Stone, Plattsburgh.

ALTUS, Okla. — Air Force Master Sgt. Roberta M. Gonzalez has arrived for duty at Altus Air Force Base.

Gonzalez, a diagnostic imaging superintendent with 15 years of military service, is assigned to the 97th Medical Support Squadron.

She is the daughter of Dale and Eleanor M. Reynolds of Champlain. Her husband, Tony, is the son of Noe C. and Yolanda Gonzalez of Lawton, Okla.

Gonzalez is a 1993 Chazy Central Rural School graduate and 1999 associate’s degree graduate of the Community College of the Air Force. She earned a bachelor ’s degree in 2007 from Florida Hospital College Health Sciences, Orlando, Fla.
