Clayton Campbell: Inspiring others

PLATTSBURGH — Clayton Campbell wants people who view his art to walk away feeling inspired.

Creating art, he said, is a privilege, and something everyone has inside them.

“If you leave here with something you didn’t have before, some exchange is happening,” Campbell said.

“I feel like it’s inert without a viewer. It’s not living if no eyes ever see it.”

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Robots and cookies, not the spyware but the sweets, will combine forces to raise money for the ENIAC Masterbots Robotics Team at the Winter Farmers Market on Feb. 9.

Members of the ENIAC Masterbots Robotics Team, a sub-set of a Clinton County 4H group made up of area home schooled youth, hope to raise money to attend the World Festival in April.

“The kids will be holding the bake sale and doing robot demonstrations at the farmers market,” Melissa Sayward, 4H mom said.

The seven-member robotics club hopes the bake sale will start off their goal of $12,000 for all members to attend the first World Festival in Saint Louis Missouri from April 24 through the 27.

Sayward said participation in the festival is only open to 85 teams from around the world each year. The Members of the Robotics Club practices putting together their creations on Dec. 29.

Arts Community receives support to fund new programs

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Almost 30 area art programs were awarded funding through the 2013 Decentralization Grant Funding on Feb 1. The grants were announced by the North

Country Cultural Center.

Projects were awarded funding in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin County, decentralization grant coordinator Kathleen Recchia said. This was this first time the grants have been awarded from the NCCCA to Essex and Southern Franklin

County since the center began working in the area six years ago.

Twenty one projects were funded under the “Community Arts Grants” category, seven under the “Arts Education” category and one regional artist was selected for the “Individual

The awards will be presented to the artists at a special awards ceremony at the NCCCA Arts Center on Friday March 8.

The NCCCA received more than 30 requests from the region encompassing all of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties in Northern New York.

“This was a year of change for arts grants in the North Country,” Janine Scherline, NCCCA Executive Director, said in a press release. “The additional grant categories, expansion of grant territory and inclusion of an Individual Artist Award involved new complexity for our organization and for our new Grants Coordinator, Kathy Recchia.”

Recchia said in a press release, “with more than 30 applications submitted for consideration, members from the panels had some tough decisions to make. But each member did his or her research and after much deliberation, the applications were scored and awards recommended.”

The following grants were awarded for 2013: Community Arts Grants were awarded to 21 projects in organizations from all three counties: In Clinton County, grants were awarded to the Adirondack Wind Ensemble, Adirondack Youth Orchestra, ROTA Art Gallery, Champlain Valley Voices, and Rouses Point Dodge Memorial Library.

In Essex County grants were awarded to Piano by Nature,

Tahawus Lodge Center and Onstage, Ballard Park Concert Series, Ticonderoga Museum, Ticonderoga Guild Arts, Town of Keene, Tara Mulvey Youth Theatre, Ticonderoga Historical Society, Whallonsburg Grange, and the Champlain Valley Film Society.

In Franklin county grants were awarded to Hobofest, Chateaugay Children’s Theatre, and the Foothills Art of Saranac Lake ArtWorks.

Arts Education Grants were awarded to seven teaching artists that will bring their crafts into area schools. Artists Nadia Korths and Adrian Carr were chosen in Franklin County.

Artists Grace Potthast, Sheri Amsel, and Elizabeth Lee were chosen in Essex County.

Artists Amy Guglielmo and Bucky Seiden were chosen in Clinton County.

The newly available Individual Artist Award was awarded to Helen Demong of Saranac Lake for her proposal of “Voices of Timbuctoo: An Abolition Oratorio.”

Recchia said the Timbuctoo project was a leading contender because the project will encompass the history of abolitionist movement in the Adirondacks.

Mayor should be more vested in arts & culture

T

wo weeks ago, Vision 2 Action, a forward-thinking group of business owners and concerned citizens in Plattsburgh, held a progress report at the Strand Theater in downtown Plattsburgh. It turns out, there was a lot to talk about, and the event was well attended by people representing the arts and businesses in the area. We couldn’t help but notice that Plattsburgh Mayor Donald Kasprzak was not among them.

It can be argued that Kasprzak was not invited, and maybe that’s true. But it was an open-to-the-community event, held by people within the community, for people within the community. And Plattsburgh is his community, after all.

V2A has had several applause worthy victories over the past year, including the new Saranac River bike path and further renovations on the Strand. They have also held discussions to generate ideas for future projects involving education, recreation, transportation and the arts. Slowly but surely, their vision, and their action, is becoming more prominent in Plattsburgh.

If things go as planned, the Strand Theatre will be open this summer, and will be linked with the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, which will morph into the Strand Arts Center. Local business owners are already buzzing with excitement in anticipation of the people the theater will draw to the city.

The two downtown galleries–NCCCA and ROTA–were represented at the event.

Both have become fixtures in the community, bringing in artists, and art enthusiasts, from around the region to Plattsburgh.

It seems that the arts are finally here to stay in Plattsburgh, and with them will come people, who will spend money, which will encourage economic growth and development. One only has to look across the lake to Burlington to see what an integral role the arts can play in a thriving downtown.

In short, the event was a pretty big deal.

We can give the mayor a pass — he’s busy, for sure, and maybe something came up.

Or maybe not.

In December, the NCCCA held its annual Holiday Member Show. The turnout was encouraging — people filled the newlyrenovated gallery space, and many talked about going to grab a bite to eat or a drink downtown after leaving the exhibition.

Congressman Bill Owens even showed up, but Kasprzak did not.

In January, ROTA Gallery brought in an artist from Saranac Lake, and an artist from Montreal. Word spread and people stopped by. Mayor Kasprzak did not.

As an elected official, the mayor should be doing more than what he thinks the city needs–he should be listening to his electorate and helping them achieve what they want.

We certainly commend the mayor for his fiscal prudence, but there is more to the job than that. Much more.

It isn’t like that in every town. Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau, Lake George Mayor Robert Blais, Keeseville Mayor Dale Holderman and Jay Town Supervisor Randy Douglas are all active participants in their communities. They don’t just show up at events, either. They work with local groups, organize and even participate in events and are involved in discussions on how to improve their towns.

Perhaps those men understand that a few ideas can go a long way in a community. For years it was easy to dismiss revitalizing a theater, creating art galleries and making a bike path as pipe dreams. But they’re here. People made them happen, and now Plattsburgh is going through a reawakening.

The people putting these projects into motion know that, in order to get jobs, Plattsburgh has to give a little, too.

Through hard work and an extraordinary amount of patience and perseverance, people have started bringing the things they want to Plattsburgh. It is a testament, not only to the determination of some who reside here, but to the fact that people want arts and culture in Plattsburgh so much they are willing to go after it themselves.

And it’s working, even if the mayor isn’t among those participating.

America: Land of mediocrity

N

ewly proposed legislation pending in Congress touted as giving women a new weapon in the battle for equal pay as well as protecting workers from retaliation could just be the final straw that breaks the American competitive sprit, if passed.

The legislation, dubbed the “Paycheck Fairness Act,” is designed to keep companies from responding against an employee who discusses sensitive salary information with another employee.

It would also mandate that owners prove differences in pay scale are not related to someone’s gender but instead to business necessity and performance on the job.

The operative word here is prove.

I’ve been operating private businesses that deal with vendors and employees, and have sat on boards overseeing nonprofit organizations for nearly 40 years.

I’ve been a part of hiring, working with, and seen first-hand thousands of men and women of all ages, races and any other category you care to divide people into. As with any situation or experience there will never be exactly the same set of circumstances for every individual, in every walk of life. Every person and every situation is unique. Does discrimination happen? Absolutely, I’m sure it does, but is it rampant across all organizations? No, not even close.

The idea that government will ride in and save the day for women and down trodden workers who are forced to work for unfair wages is just another political gimmick, sugar coated to dull the competitive edge of the American worker.

Like a tenured teacher or a super star athlete who was just awarded a big time multi-year contract with a large signing bonus, once you remove the competitive edge, in what some call leveling the playing field, you’ve effectively lowered the bar and removed all motivation to exceed the norm. The norm is what you’ll get.

Performance and production are critical to American industry. Self confidence and sheer competence are traits that keep employers and employees focused on reaching the same goal. If you are capable, work hard and produce desired results you become indispensable to your employer — that is unless those same skills at a lower rate of pay are readily

available in the market place. Each of us must distinguish ourselves with a work ethic, Dan Alexander not only to Thoughts from an emBehind the Pressline ployer but more importantly to yourself.

If you feel you are underpaid for the job you perform, find a new job or better yet start your own business. That’s the spirit this country was built on and it’s exactly the same in all walks of life and in all organizations large and small. But if you lack confidence in your abilities or aren’t interested in the highly competitive world we live in today, but want the same pay as someone similarly employed, this legislation is just one more anchor around the neck of this country’s economic engine. Fending off lawsuits and seeking fairness will stall progress and cause one simple solution — pay everyone the same rate of pay. Once that happens why should anyone compete when we will all be treated the same regardless of output?

Parent and teacher advocates have been warning us for years to let our children learn failure at a young age when the stakes are smaller and can be overcome. Legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act will only perpetuate what kids are experiencing in many facets of their lives where everyone wins regardless of effort. High standards and excellence are only borne out of hard work and a steadfast desire to be the very best.

Yes, “luck” plays a role, but people who are driven find ways to overcome those obstacles. Accepting anything less than your very best puts us on a path to mediocrity and as any athlete will tell you; to compete is an honor but to win is a thrill unlike any other. Just Ask the Raven’s or better yet ask the 49’ers about their motivation for next year. True champions build on adversity.

Seems as though you are referring to us as a “maybe” society. We too find that responding to an invitation, in both personal and professional settings, has become a lost social courtesy. We do live in a more relaxed society than perhaps our grandparent’s generation and that could be one reason why people do not respond to an invitation, they may not know the expectation. That being said, we are in a position to set the standard! Responding right away by saying, emailing or texting removes the angst of the host or hostess. Should you be unsure…responding with, “I need to check and see, I may have a conflict or I am not sure and will get back to you by (the day)” at least relieves some of the uncertainty. Knowing best how your coworkers, friends or family operate is half of the problem; some respond easier to the phone, some to email, etc….so when inviting, meet people where they are most likely to respond. In having to make a follow up call when people fail to RSVP; make it as painless as possible before you feel those negative emotions setting in…in this way you can set the “new courtesy” standard and hopefully others will take your lead.

Not responding could also be due to the fact that people are overbooked for time and living a very fast paced life. Again, not an excuse, but a reality of the times. Make responding very simple in using the Regrets Only response. This can be tricky when planning for refreshments and other party necessities, but it does simplify.

Depending upon the occasion, you may include a self addressed stamped envelope with a response card or, as a sign of modern times, you can send an e-vitation, an electronic invitation, to which your guest can respond electronically.

Good manners are the foundation

of any relationship and you can set the expectation by making your own timely response in all matters!

Artists sought for Tropical Storm Irene Photo Response project

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Moments of peril can inspire people to do extraordinary things — those who aided locally in disaster relief are now receiving help themselves from community artists through an art show inspired by the wreckage of Tropical Storm Irene.

The Long Term Recovery Group of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties asked artists to channel the mixed reactions of three photographs taken in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene into art work.

“We’re hoping to see all kinds of pieces

come in, I like the idea that the artists can go in so many different directions with this assignment,” Caroline Johr, counselor and disaster case manager at the Long Term Recovery Group said. “It will be interesting to see where people go with this.”

The photos can be viewed by visiting the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts webpage at plattsburgharts.org. Work should be submitted by Feb. 9 and can be created using any visual medium. The only requirement is work should be 5 by 7 inches in size or smaller. The work will be put up for sale on Feb. 16 at a presentation at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, 30

Brinkerhoff Street, as part of their Disaster Awareness Day. On Feb. 16, from noon to 5 p.m., the work will be on display and people can walk through the gallery at NCCCA and view the exhibits. There will also be family activities and demonstrations on community preparedness.

Members of the Long Term Recovery Group will be available from 12:30 to 3 p.m. to discuss the different aspects of efforts done in the aftermath of a disaster. Johr said representatives will be available to discuss what services are offered to those affected and how people can get involved to help.

Science of Pinewood explored by Scouts at Transportation Museum

keith@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It starts out as a piece of wood, four nails, four wheels and a piece of sandpaper.

Then it is in the hands of local Cub Scouts what to make of that piece of wood and equipment as they prepare for the annual Pinewood Derby races, held in packs throughout the region and country.

In Plattsburgh, the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum and Kids Station holds an annual Pinewood Derby night, which not only helps scouts begin to create their vehicles, but also introduces them to the science of Pinewood.

“I think that it is great that we can take these scouts and teach them some basic things about science,” Museum Executive Director Anthony Vaccaro said. “There is a tremendous amount of engineering and science in something that is so simple. We can talk about friction, aerodynamics, weight, and the alignment of the car.”

This year, Cub Scouts made their way to the museum Jan. 11, getting a chance to learn about how to properly shape their cars, where the weight should go, how their wheels should be placed and more.

Cub Scouts from throughout the region were busy creating their Pinewood Derby cars during the annual Derby Night at the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum and Kids Station Jan. 11.

Fire Department planning Easter raffle March 23 MOOERS — The Mooers Volunteer Fire Department will hold their second-annual Easter raffle on Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Mooers Fire Station, 2508 New York State Bicycle Route 11.

The raffle will include 45 rounds of raffle items including cash prizes, dinner baskets, breakfast baskets, hams, turkeys, spirits (age appropriate), Easter baskets for youths, door prizes throughout the evening, and two lottery boards as the final two rounds. There will be a light supper buffet at the end of the evening.

All proceeds will be used for the purchase of Fire Equipment.

Sayward said this was the first year in several years that Clarkson was awarded an invitation to give to their first place team, and the ENIAC Masterbots Robotics Team won the Clarkson Tournament in December and was given the invitation to attend the World Festival.

Along with the task competition, the team will be interviewed about their robot design and will be judged on their mechanical design, their programming ability and their strategy for solving the tasks. They will also be interviewed about how they worked as a team and learned and practiced “Cooperation” and “Gracious Professionalism.” Both are FIRST terms referring to good sportsmanship intertwined with hard work, competition, and kindness.

Sayward said the young 4-H kids have already patented a prototype design they made for a robot used to improve the lives of senior citizens.

The team is planning to bring a prototype of the device to Saint Louis and give a formal presentation on their device to the judges.

“You could spend literally hundreds of hours working to build this little car to make it go faster,” Vaccaro said. “There are some people who take this to extremes, but the basics of physics are here. We as a culture need to have students going in the direction of science, engineering and technology.

If we can get scouts and other students at an early age thinking about math and engineering then we can get them excited and in a position to help this country grow as they grow.”

Vaccaro, who helped his own son prepare Pinewood Derby cars as a member of the Cub Scouts, said that along with helping kids learn about science, they also get a chance to work alongside their parents.

“We want to create memories and bonding between parent and child,” he said. “This is something that these kids will remember how well their parents are working with them and helping to create these cars.”

While some packs will hold their own Pinewood derbies, which give the scouts that chance to race their wooden cars down tracks, he museum will be sponsoring a regional Pinewood Derby Race May 4.

“The museum is here to help the community and we want to get involved with education, teaching and science,” Vaccaro said. “We feel that this is a great event and we put a lot of time into it.”

The opening was the second installment of a new off-site gallery program sponsored by ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh in an effort to connect local businesses to local artists.

Campbell’s work includes nine prints and four nature-inspired photos.

Eight of the prints are monotypes and the other is linocut.

A monotype is created by putting a flat of ink on a piece of plexiglass. A shape is placed on the ink, so when it is run through a press everything but the shape is printed on the paper.

The ink must be given time to dry between each run to prevent different colors from blending.

Since the colors and shapes are put through the press one at a time, each monotype print is unique.

A linotype print is more like a stamp, and the image produced can be duplicated many times.

“It’s a time consuming process,” Campbell said. “In printmaking, there are all these different steps that coalesce to make the print. You’re working with the paint, you’re mixing the color, and later you’re cutting out stencils or preparing the paper.”

ber 2011 to participate in a student exchange program while attending Mississippi University.

He is currently finishing up a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree at Plattsburgh, and plans to continue making art after he graduates.

“This is absolutely what I want to be doing,” Campbell said.

“I came into that notion about six months ago. This is what I am into, this is what I want to share with others.”

Some of the work Campbells has on display at the Champlain Wine Company represents his first ventures into the medium, when he was experimenting with ink and getting to know the printmaking process.

As his skill progresses, Campbell hopes his prints will become something that engages people to look deeper.

But he doesn’t think he’s quite there yet.

“I want to figure out how to make the viewer involved,” Campbell said. “I want them to be actively involved in it, and I haven’t figured that out yet.”

But in some ways, Campbell has succeeded.

One of his prints, “Sequence,” consists of three blue teardrops imprinted on three lightly colored shapes that resemble feathers, or grasses, or moth antennae.

On each teardrop, there is the vague, black outline of a figure.

Viewing the piece raises questions as to its meaning, which Campbell described as a meditation on his friendship with three different people.

Natalie Peck, who owns the Champlain Wine Company with her husband, Colin Read, said she welcomed the idea of displaying art at their shop.

“Some day I’d like to see local art in all the public spaces downtown,” Peck said.

The Champlain Wine Company opened in October 2011, and has hosted one other art opening.

Peck and Read sell about 25 New York State wines at the Wine Company, including wines from local wineries Amazing Grace Vineyards and Vesco Ridge Vineyards.

They also sell their own wine, which covers a wide range of reds and whites, all produced from grapes grown on their Mooers farm.

Peck said the showings have helped draw people into her business, and also offer a venue for the artists to sell their work.

There is no commission on art sales, so all of the money goes directly to the artist.

“It benefits the artists and it benefits the business,” Campbell said. “Everyone’s success is our success.”

Peck said there is no definite end-date for the exhibition, but that it will probably run until early March, at which time she hopes to get another artist in.

Artists interested in participating in ROTA’s off-site gallery program can email samples of their work to gallery coordinator Kaitlyn Donovan at kaitlyndonovan22@gmail.com.

Donovan said she isn’t looking for any more off-site locations until she finds more artists to fill wall space, but encouraged interested businesses to email her as well.

The Champlain Wine Company is located at 8 City Hall Place in Plattsburgh and is open Wednesday-Sunday, noon-8 p.m.

Battle of Pburgh essay contest ongoing PLATTSBURGH — The Battle of Plattsburgh Association, Adirondack Bank and the Key Foundation, in cooperation with the North Country Teacher Recourse Center, are sponsoring an essay contest to explore local history and the critical battle of the War of 1812 that occurred in the Champlain Valley.

The contest is open to all students grade 4 through 12.

Prizes will be awarded in each of the three grade levels: 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Each grade level will be awarded three prizes as follows: first prize is $200, second prize is $100, third prize is $50.

Adirondack Coffee Roasters

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Coffee brought them together, and now they’re sharing that love with the North Country.

Crissie and Dwane Bast met in a coffee shop in Reno, Nevada in 1999.

The couple began roasting coffee in Peru, NY in 2007, and on Monday, Feb. 4, their journey with joe culminated with the grand opening of their coffee shop, Adirondack Coffee Roasters.

“We always wanted to have our own business, and we figured we know a lot about coffee,” Crissie said.

All of the coffee sold at Adirondack Coffee Roasters is roasted on premises, with a range of roasts, from light to dark, available.

Crissie explained that the roasting process brings the flavor out of the beans, so darker roasts have a stronger flavor but a lower caffeine content than their lighter counterparts.

The Basts didn’t just learn through trial and er-

ror–the couple have taken classes through the Specialty Coffee Association, an organization that holds conventions and trains participants about all things coffee, from how to pick beans to how to brew the perfect cup.

Although coffee is their forte, Adirondack Coffee Roasters also sells hot chocolate, smoothies, and teas.

And, straying from the all-things-drinkable approach, there is an assortment of treats hand-baked

by Crissie, like cannoli and biscotti, available.

Coffee beans, grounds, and mugs are also for sale.
