ROUSES POINT — John Cooper, former trustee for the village of Rouses Point, was appointed as chairperson of the planning board during a village board meeting Jan. 19. Cooper, who stepped down from the village board, effective Dec. 31, was appointed by Mayor George A. Rivers as an alternate for the planning board, effective Jan. 1. Last year, Cooper had been appointed to the village board in March, which left him having to
step down as a planning board member. “You can’t hold two offices here in the village at the same time,” he explained. However, Cooper was recently appointed as a town councilman for the town of Champlain. “Being a town councilman [in Champlain] ... I can get back to the planning board,” he said. “It’s kind of my favorite thing.” Cooper was appointed to chairperson by the mayor, after former chairperson Geri Favreau stepped down from the position. “I’ve been a volunteer on the planning board for almost four
years,” explained Favreau. “I just thought it was time for somebody else to have the experience.” Favreau will now work alongside Cooper, as she is still a member of the planning board. “I think John will make a wonderful chairman,” she said. “I think he will be very very good. I support him 110 percent.” Cooper ’s first official meeting as chairperson for the planning board will be Monday, Jan. 25. However, he’s already made plans for how he hopes things will go. “We just like to keep everything rolling as smoothly as we can and See COOPER, page 7
Former Chazy resident’s new book to help future nurses, honor late wife By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PITTSBURG, N.H. — For the last 10 years, Marty Hewson told his wife, Anne, he wanted to write a book which encaptured his life as a member of the Border Patrol. Last November, his book was published. Hewson, he was born and raised in Chazy, left the area at age 19 to pursue a career in the United States Air Force. After three years, he got out, but was immediately recalled to the Korean Conflict. After 10 years in the Air Force, Hewson turned his sights to the Border Patrol. “I went in ‘57 and [in] ‘68 I transferred to Immigration,” he explained. “Which put me in Pittsburg.” “For the last 10 years, I kept telling my wife I’m going to write a book about my experiences [in the Border Patrol],” Hewson added. “Every once in a while, she’d remind me of it.” However, last May, Anne took sick. “I procrastinated too long about the book,” said Hewson. “So, I just set it aside about writing it.” Anne, who was in the hospital for several

weeks, in need of a new heart and aorta replacement valve, eventually came home, though passed away a week later, July 17. “After the funeral ... I guess two weeks later, I couldn’t sleep,” Hewson recalled. “I was up all the time at night. So, one morning, about 3 a.m., I walked into my office ... sat down, grabbed a pencil and paper and I started.” “It all came out the top of my head,” he added. “I had no notes whatsoever.” “Border Patrol’s Silent Sentinels” is a 60chapter book which chronicles Hewson’s life in the Border Patrol for more than 10 years. “About apprehending people on the Rio Grande River who tried to cross,” he explained. The book features 20 chapters of his time in El Paso and Brownsville, Tex., 20 chapters of his time in Richford, Vt., and the final 20 take place in his current town, with the final chapter focusing completely on him and Anne. “There’s some cute [stories] in here, too,” said Hewson. The book was published in October by Colebrook Copy Center in Colebrook, N.H.
