The song “Static” by Beck, which had been playing over the enthusiastic din of the dozens of people assembled at the Upper Jay Art Center, abruptly stopped, and was replaced by the swagger-inducing sound of a slide guitar, gently being picked by Will’s fingers.

PLATTSBURGH — Beartown Ski Center has been a local favorite since it opened in 1958.

This year, the lifts began running Friday, Dec. 28, following a snow storm that brought more than a foot of fresh powder to the region.

On New Year ’s Day, Charlie Mitchell, of Morrisonville, fondly recalled skiing at Beartown when he was younger, and asked: “I mean, who didn’t ski here as a kid?”

Mitchell said the small, not-for-profit ski center is the perfect place for families, and that it is also a great hill for kids to learn on.

“Everyone here knows each other,” Mitchell said. “You can drop your kids off at 10 a.m. and pick them up later, and you know they’re in good hands.”

Beartown has a ski team program for kids 5 years of age and older that practices every Saturday and Sunday morning starting Jan. 1.

Currently, there are about 50 kids on the ski team.

Winter Carnival Committee ramping up

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — In just under three weeks, the King and Queen will be named and the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival will be under way.

Until then, members of the organizing committee will be in high gear to make sure that everything is in place for the 10 days of “Under the Sea,” celebrations that run from Feb. 1 through Feb. 10.

Through the month, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee will meet each Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in the large group instruction room of the Saranac Lake High School.

Currently, the committee is seeking vendor applications, which can be found at the Winter Carnival website (saranaclakewintercarnival.com) or the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, 193 River St. All vendors are required to fill out and return a vendor agreement to the Chamber of Commerce by Friday, Jan. 25. Any vendor serving food or beverages will also be responsible for securing an operating permit from the New York State Department of Health at least 30 days before the event. For more information about vendors, contact Rob Johnson at 327-3071.

The committee has also announced the sale of collectible posters designed by “Doonesbury” cartoonist Garry Trudeau. Trudeau’s illustration shows “Doonesbury" character Zonker Harris dressed in blue trunks swimming underwater with a school of fish. Trudeau has been creating the Winter Carnival button design since 1981 and offered his first poster design in 2012.

“We have 100 posters signed and numbered by Garry as well as unsigned ones,” said Carnival Committee Chairman Jeff Dickson. “Anyone who purchased a signed poster last year can claim the same poster number this year if they wish.”

For posters, contact Dickson at 891-4344 to be added to the list to obtain an unclaimed poster. Signed posters are $50, and unsigned ones are $15. Shipping is $5 per poster. There will also be a raffle for poster No. 1, with 100 raffle tickets be sold for $5 each. All proceeds benefit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

Unsigned posters are available by contacting Dickson or at Ampersound.

As the carnival approaches, the committee will be hosting a Carnival Court Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser Monday, Jan. 14, at Belvedere Restaurant. Those interested in attending are asked to call 891-9873 for reservations.

Events gear up with the 14th Annual Past Royalty Mixer and Dinner Thursday, Jan. 31, at 5:30 p.m. at the Red Fox Restaurant (call 891-1286 for reservations), then begin in full with the Coronation of Carnival Royalty Ceremony and opening of the Winter Carnival Friday, Feb. 1, at the Harrietstown Town Hall and sponsored by the Women’s Civic Chamber. A post-coronation reception will follow.

Winter Carnival buttons are on sale at 37 locations throughout Saranac Lake. They are $3 each. Anyone interested in ordering buttons by mail should contact Barbara Martin, 230 Broadway, Saranac Lake NY 12983, 891-2382. Snocross planned for this weekend at Airborne SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — High-performance snowmobile racers from Canada, New York and New England will compete over a course of jumps, bumps and table tops in the first event of the International Triple Crown Series planned for Jan. 12 and 13. The competition will be held at Airborne Speedway, Broderick Road, just off Rte 22 in South Plattsburgh, one mile south of I-87 exit 36.

The three-race series includes Pro and Pro-Lite riders from East Coast Snocross presented by Amsoil and Woody’s Traction and the Quebec-based Super Competition Motorsport Tour.

The Airborne event is sponsored by Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, Econo Lodge, Della Motorsports, Liquor & Wine

Remembrances of Charlie Green and his store at Adirondack Artists’ Guild

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Artists’ Guild will pay tribute to the past life of their building this month with a tribute to Charlie Green.

“The Market Show: The Guild Celebrates Charlie Green,” an exhibit featuring interpretations of markets far and wide, will open with a reception Friday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Gallery, located at 52 Main St., the former home of the famed Green’s Market, and run through Tuesday, Jan. 29.

There will be an installation of stories, photos and artifacts recalling the British grocer. The public is invited to share their memories of the Green Market and Charlie Green, by writing their own memories into a collection scrap book commemorating Charlie Green.

According to Guild member artist Diane Leifheit, members of the Guild have listened to many of the stories about Green since moving into their home in 2004, with some having used the store while it was open.

Leifheit said that their four-to-five month search for all things Charlie Green brought back interesting results.

“We put out a couple of letters and did a Facebook call,” Leifheit said. “We received a lot of interesting responses.”

The exhibit will include copies of a pair of obituary articles that were written about Green, along with several items from the old store, including a set of “long arms,” that were used to get items off of tall shelves and found by the new owners of the building.

There will also be several pictures that show Green and the store, including one with him and Guild member Ursula Trudeau.

Leifheit also said that there are plenty of recollections.

“We have had some people who come into the gallery and tell their stories about Charlie, so we asked them to write those stories down,” she said.

Time to follow the Open Meetings Law

I

t’s been almost a year since Gov. Andrew Cuomo approved an amendment to the Open Meetings Law (section 103e) requiring public bodies — school, town, village, city, county and state boards — to provide meeting material to the public prior to their meetings.

While some boards have made progress toward meeting this requirement, which was enacted last February, we sadly report that many public bodies are not following the law.

Moreover, many are not fulfilling the spirit of the law because they are hiding behind language in the amendment preventing it from becoming an unfunded mandate.

We urge all public boards to rectify this shortcoming immediately instead of hoping the public will ignore their responsibilities in regard to the New York State Open Meetings Law. The public has a right to know what board members are talking about in their meetings.

Starting Feb. 2, 2012, New York state began requiring boards to give the public access to their records scheduled for discussion at open meetings. The reason?

“Members of the public have on many occasions complained that they cannot fully understand discussions among members of public bodies, even though the discussions occur in public,” states the New York Department of State Committee on Open Government.

This change to the Open Meetings Law was made so “those interested in the work of public bodies should have the ability, within reasonable limitations, to see the records scheduled to be discussed during open meetings prior to the meetings.”

The change to the law centers around two types of records: 1) those that are required to be made available pursuant to the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL); 2) and proposed resolutions, law, rules, regulations, policies or amendments thereto.

When these records are scheduled to be discussed, they must be “made available, upon request therefor, to the extent practicable as determined by the agency or the department, prior to or at the meeting during which the records will be discussed.”

Public bodies can charge a reasonable fee for copies of the meeting material. However, by posting them online, they will save money.

Unfortunately, there are many boards who are not following the amendment’s website requirement: “If the agency in which a public body functions maintains a regularly and routinely updated website and utilizes a high speed Internet connection, such records shall be posted on the website to the extent practicable as determined by the agency or the department, prior to the meeting.”

This is where many boards are failing. And they’re hiding behind the words “to the extent practicable.”

When asked about this language during the New York Press Association conference in the spring of 2012, Committee on Open Government Executive Director Robert Freeman answered a Denton Publications editor with a question: “Can you place it on your website?” The answer was “yes.” Therefore, it is practicable for all boards to do so, he asserted.

Public boards are also hiding behind the language that prevents this from being an unfunded mandate: “An agency may, but shall not be required to, expend additional moneys to implement the provisions of this subdivision.”

Therefore, some say they will not post meeting material online because it will require them to redesign their websites, and that costs money.

Wrong. If the public body updates its own website, it doesn’t cost extra money, just extra time. Some towns, however, have outside firms manage their websites, and updates do cost money. But that should be considered regular maintenance. You don’t have to redesign your website to post meeting material.

Hallmarks of website posting for their meetings include the City of Glens Falls, Village of Saranac Lake and Johnsburg Central School.

As for the other public entities, we’re keeping an eye on you. When we follow up on this topic, we hope all boards will be complying with the law.

More violence is not the answer

T

he recent increase in highly visible shootings around the country has many talking about guns and legislations. Two recent items caught my eye as the nation tries to come to grips with the best approach to address these senseless nightmare events.

The first item was an editorial by Donald Kaul, a retired editor from the Des Moines Register. The column appeared just after the shooting: “I would tie Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, our esteemed Republican leaders, to the back of a Chevy pickup truck and drag them around a parking lot until they saw the light on gun control. And if that didn’t work, I’d adopt radical measures.”

“Declare the NRA a terrorist organization and make membership illegal. Hey! We did it to the Communist Party, and the NRA has led to the deaths of more of us than American Commies ever did. (I would also raze the organization’s headquarters, clear the rubble and salt the earth, but that’s optional.) Make ownership of unlicensed assault rifles a felony. If some people refused to give up their guns, than “prying the guns from their cold, dead hands” thing works for me.”

Not a very rational approach, but we must understand the emotion these repeated events has on people who feel helpless and obviously hopeless.

Now, here’s another side of the multi-dimensional argument, which came to my attention recently. It’s from Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings. His comments were provided in an address before the House Judiciary Subcommittee shortly after the Columbine shooting tragedy in May 1999.

“Since the dawn of creation there has been both good and evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other 11 children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.”

“The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.”

“In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as Dan Alexander the NRA. I am Thoughts from not a member Behind the Pressline of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA — because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death.”

“Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our makeup, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc.”

“Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history.”

“We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs — politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws.”

“Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre.”

“The real villain lies within our own hearts.

We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgement that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God.” We’ll hear more on this subject in the days ahead, and while some may advocate more violence in order to curb violence we all must make certain we have a thoughtful and realistic debate on the issues truly at the root of these events. There are an untold number of things that cause untimely deaths in this world. To address these issues we must look beyond the superficial cause and not allow political agendas to cloud a very important debate.

January Jams from page 1 It was a slow, steady rhythm, accented by Cache’s foot as she stomped it in time.

Words, sung deep and smooth, spilled from beneath the brim of Will’s black hat, and then something unexpected happened.

About halfway through the song, one of the Recovery Lounge’s owners, Scott Renderer, sat down behind the drum set and began to play.

By the end of the Hartzell’s fifteen-minute set, two others—one on electric bass and the other on acoustic guitar—had joined the ensemble.

Cache seemed behind herself, and with joy surrounding her like a halo, she spoke softly into the microphone: “It does my heart good to have a band backing me up.”

The couple moved to Westport from Bozeman, Mont. about two months ago, where they were in a band called Field Trip.

Most of Field Trip’s songs were their own, and were played in a style the Hartzell’s call “slack country blues”—laid back, easy and relaxed.

The Hartzell’s Jan. 6 performance brought slack country blues to the region for the first time at the Recovery Lounge’s January Jams, and if a warm reception is any kind of a predictor, it won’t be their last—if there was ever a proper way to be welcomed to the North Country, the encouraging response they earned from the crowd was it.

“We came here one night last month with a friend to see a band, and I though the place was brilliant,” Cache said. “I think people everywhere need music and they need community, and there’s always people like Scott who will take that vision and make the step and create the space.”

Scott Renderer and his brother, Byron, began using the upholstery-shop-by-day, Upper Jay Upholstery, as a venue for arts and entertainment about 10 years ago.

With the upholstery equipment pushed aside and replaced by rows of comfortable chairs and couches, it became the Recovery Lounge, a name many still call it by today.

About six years ago, though, the Recovery Lounge became a non-profit organization and was transformed into the Upper Jay Art Center.

Non-profit status allows the venue to apply for grants to support its activities, which are also largely funded by donations from the community.

One such grant the center has received is a Pearsall Grant, which helps fund January Jams.

The UJAC also hosts poetry readings, bands and theater performances, but in January, it’s all about open jam sessions.

“The musicians just show up with their instruments, I put them on the list and work them into the line up,” Scott said. “It’s pretty open. Anybody can play.”

Bob Haley has been a regular at the jams since they started a decade ago, but he isn’t just a spectator.

Haley learned to play guitar when he was younger, but he found himself playing less often as the years passed.

Having a venue to perform in inspired him to begin playing his acoustic guitar again, and now he performs every Sunday.

“It really hit my heart, what they are doing here,” Haley said. “It gave me what I needed to get back into what I like to do with music.”

For Haley, the value of the UJAC is incalculable, something he said is evident by the standing-room-only crowds January Jams draws toward the end of the month.

“All it takes is a couple of people doing the right thing,” Haley said. “Nobody is trying to get rich off of it. Nobody judges. Everybody just comes together and enjoys this.”

The program’s coaches help the kids become better skiers and there is also some competition, as the team sometimes goes to Mt. Pisgah in Saranac Lake or Titus Mt. in Malone to race.

There are six downhill ski trails at Beartown, some for beginners and some for intermediate-level skiers, and, for those not inclined to skiing inclines, there are more than 4 miles of cross country ski trails, too.

Matt Booth, a member of the Beartown Ski Center ’s board of directors, said that maintaining the ski center is a labor of love for its staff.

“Ninety-five percent of what we do here is volunteer run,” Booth said. “It’s a community effort, all working to maintain this community jewel.”

Canopy collapses at Sunoco PLATTSBURGH — High wind combined with the weight of snow caused the canopy over the gas pumps at the Sandri Sunoco gas station to collapse early in the morning New Year ’s Day. No one was hurt in the accident, and the gas station was closed at the time of the incident. Owner Tahir Ayub said the business is insured.

According to Plattsburgh Fire Department officials, the canopy collapsed at 3:37 a.m., causing slight damage to the gas pumps. The station was barricaded by city officials and power was cut to the station.

The station is located at 5051 U.S. Ave, in front of Sky Way plaza in downtown Plattsburgh.

Peru Stewart’s Shop robbed PERU — The Stewart’s Shop on State Route 22 in Peru was robbed by an armed suspect at 10:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, according to the New York State Police in Plattsburgh.

According to police, an unknown white male entered the store wearing a mask or some other material to conceal most of his face. He was also wearing a dark colored jacket, blue jeans and dark colored shoes. No further description of the suspect was available. The suspect displayed what appeared to be a black-colored semi-automatic handgun and demanded money. The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of money and was observed fleeing the scene in a small, dark-colored car with an aftermarket rear wing/spoiler.

Couple robbed at gunpoint CHESTERFIELD — A couple from Queens was held up at gunpoint early Sunday morning, Jan. 6, by five Hispanic men off Exit 33 of Interstate 87, according to New York State Police.

According to police, the couple were pulled over approximately 1.5 miles from the Northway when a black SUV, with Florida license plates, pulled up behind them. The men then approached the couple, with two displaying handguns. The suspects spoke Spanish, assaulted and robbed the couple of an undisclosed amount of cash and personal property, and headed north in the SUV. The couple, in turn, got back on the Northway and headed south, reporting the incident at the State Trooper barracks in Lewis. They were then transported to Elizabethtown Community Hospital were they were treated for minor injuries and released.

A State Police investigation remains under way. If anyone has any information regarding this crime, they are asked to contact the New York State Police in Lewis at 8732750.
