Paquette aims to keep the spirit of ‘the Quad’ alive By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com

‘The Logger’ coming to NCCS next Friday By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com

CHAMPLAIN — Now that 2010 is here, the Quadricentennial, which honored Samuel de Champlain’s exploration of Lake Champlain in 1609, is officially over. But, plans are in the works to make sure “the Quad” is not forgotten. Celine R. Paquette, vicechairperson of the HudsonFulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission, found there was a lot of community interest in the Quad, with numerous groups and organizations getting involved with various projects. She hopes to continue the interest this year. See QUAD, page 9

CHAMPLAIN — Students of Northeastern Clinton Central Middle School are in for a good laugh as well as learn a good life lesson. Rusty DeWees, a stand-up comedian and actor from Stowe, Vt., best known for his one-man comedy show, “The Logger,” will visit the school Friday, Jan. 15, to entertain the students and the community, as well as give a “motivation talk.” “[The talk] tells the kids in our areas that I am just some guy, just a regular hometown guy,” DeWees explained. “I followed my heart in what I wanted to do and I have succeeded so that I am content in my life.” DeWees added he believes one of the main reasons for his success is because he has never been involved with any substance of any kind. “He tries to give a good message to the kids that you can do something with your life without drugs and alcohol,” explained Jeanne Bousquet, a teaching assistant at NCCS who came up

with the idea to invite DeWees to the school. “One morning I heard him on the radio talking on one of the Vermont stations and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to see if he could come to the school,’” she recalled. Bousquet explained the middle school students are paying for DeWees to come, so the community can enjoy the act, free of charge. “We’re always asking [the community] for something,” Bousquet said. “No matter what, we’re always asking the community, and they always give to us, so, now we’re giving back.” DeWees said he will do some of his stand-up as The Logger, which will be toned down for the students. However, his message about being substance-free he gives as himself. “I’m not willing to preach to the students,” he explained. “I’m not an authority figure. I’m not a police person, I’m not a nurse or a doctor, I’m not a teacher. I’m coming from a sort of neutral spirit.” The Jan. 15 show will be held at the school, located at 103 State Route 276, beginning at 1:15 p.m.

MOOERS — For the last five years, the Mooers Beautification Committee has held a Christmas Lighting Contest. This year, however, the decision was made to do something a little different. Every year the town of Mooers provides $150 to be split amongst the top three winners of the lighting contest. But, with the tough economic times, the committee decided to use the money to help the Mooers Food Pantry. “We kind of spoke amongst the people on the committee and with the hard times, we thought ... it would come across and hit more of the community [through the food pantry],” explained committee chairperson Scarlett Sample. On Jan. 5, Sample and committee member Crystal Bulriss, presented a check for $150 to Diane and Wendell Brooks, organizers of the food pantry — which helps the people of Rouses Point, Champlain, Chazy, West Chazy,

Altona, Ellenburg, Mooers, and Mooers Forks, and sees nearly 20 families per week at the Mooers Wesleyan Church. Next year, Sample anticipates continuing with the lighting contest, as the town saw an increase of Christmas decorations this year. “We don’t want people not to put the lighting up,” she explained. “It did make the community look much nicer.” The goal of the committee is to keep the community “spruced up,” Sample said. “We’re just trying to spruce up the community, get people more conscious, [and try] to have a little more pride in their town,” she explained. The Mooers Beautification Committee was formed in 2002, with the aim of preparing the town for their bicentennial in 2004. They currently put out Christmas banners and lighting in the wintertime, and flowers and U.S. flags during the warmer months.
