But it wasn’t until last year that she published her first book, a children’s story called “Heart of a Horse.”

“I’m one of those closet writers,” Call-Morin said.

“I’ve written many, many children’s stories, and I’ve written adult short stories too.”

Last spring, she self-published 250 copies of her book through Living Water publishers in Vermont.

Call-Morin, who lives in Plattsburgh, said “Heart of a Horse” has sold well, so she recently had 150 more copies printed.

Plattsburgh resident Tom Pillsworth works to clear his driveway following last Thursday’s snowstorm. Parts of the Northern Tier saw as much as 16 inches of the white stuff before it was all said and done.

PLATTSBURGH — As a thick snowfall steadily accumulated on the ground, Tom Pillsworth worked to clear a path in his driveway with his shovel.

But he didn’t grumble, bundled up with a twinkle in his eye as he gazed out at the white blanket on the ground.

“This reminds me of why I live here,” he said. “It’s beautiful.”

He sails all summer and cannot imagine living anywhere else.

As soon as he finished shoveling, Pillsworth planned to hit the slopes.

A few blocks over, Mathew Katz walked his dog, Mighty.

“I’m not crazy about it.”

Mighty didn’t appear to like it either.

“He’s picky about where he goes to the bathroom and no one has shoveled their driveway.”

But it’s the North Country, Katz sighed, and snow is part of living here.

“We haven’t had much in a couple years,” he said. “I think this year we are going to get hit.

“You just gotta grin and bear it.”

Impact of former librarian remembered at PSUC

stephen@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Phyllis Wells passed away at 82 roughly a year ago.

The bulk of her estate went to Plattsburgh State, making it the second largest gift from an alumna in the university’s history.

The $470,000 donation from the former librarian is second only to the estate gift from Olive Mason Flynt, a former employee who gave $1 million to Plattsburgh State in 2007.

Wells earned her Master of Science in elementary education from Plattsburgh State in 1957, saying she lived her life at the school and built her career there.

Phyllis Wells “She spent her whole career with us,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Anne Whitmore Hansen. “She enjoyed her work and took great pride in her connection with the college.

When she informed me of her intention to support the college so generously, she commented that ‘it was simply the right thing to do because the college gave her so much.’”

Wells joined Plattsburgh State as an assistant librarian in 1957 and received several promotions while there. She became a senior assistant librarian in 1979 and an associate librarian in 1987, the same year she retired.

meeting her philanthropic goal. She delighted in imagining the impact she would have on students and the library.”

Much of her gift will support the Phyllis Wells Endowed Scholarship, a fund that is unrestricted.

The rest will go to the Wells Endowment for Special Collections in Feinberg Library to support the preservation of rare and archival materials related to the North Country, Plattsburgh State and New York state.

Wells enjoyed special collections and continued to volunteer after her retirement.

She had been studying local churches in order to write a book on their history and gave some of her notes to the archives. She also donated other historical materials, including information on covered bridges, Clinton County historical markers, ghost towns and post offices.

“We’d talk for hours about local history and her book,” said Debra Kimok, associate librarian in Special Collections.

“Phyllis was very detail-oriented and was getting quite proficient using a computer, something that wasn’t easy for her in the beginning, but which she was determined to figure out.”

Wells also published the “Subject Index to the Clinton County Portion of the History of Clinton and Franklin Counties, N.Y.” “It was a huge success,” Kimok said.

It was published in 1880 and until Wells created her index there was no easy way to locate specific subjects.

She donated all sales and proceeds from the “Index” to Special Collections.

“Her impact on the college as both an employee and a volunteer was already significant,” said Plattsburgh State President John Ettling, “but with this gift, Phyllis will continue to make a difference, especially for our students who need financial support more than ever.”

East Coast Snocross coming to Airborne SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — High-performance snowmobile racers from Canada, New York and New England will compete over a course of jumps, bumps and table tops in the first event of the International Triple Crown Series planned for Jan. 12 and 13. The competition will be held at Airborne Speedway, Broderick Road, just off Rte 22 in South Plattsburgh, one mile south of I-87 exit 36.

The three-race series includes Pro and Pro-Lite riders from East Coast Snocross presented by Amsoil and Woody’s Traction and the Quebec-based Super Competition Motorsport Tour.

The Airborne event is sponsored by Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, Econo Lodge, Della Motorsports, Liquor & Wine Warehouse, WOKO, WIZN and KOOL105. Round two of the Triple Crown Series will take place in Louiseville, QC, Feb. 2 and 3. The finale is set for Valcourt, QC Feb. 15 through 17.

Over $7,500 in purse monies has been posted to date.

“We had two successful events at the Crete Civic Center,” promoter Mike Perrotte said. “We just wanted to try something different. All the room we have in the infield and on the front straightaway should allow for an excellent track. I think with our grandstands and ample parking for both competitors and fans, Airborne should be a good fit for a big snowmobile race.”

Pro racing begins at 12:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, January 12 through 13. Daily admission is $12/adults, $5/kids 6-12, ages five and under admitted free.

Dr. Martin Luther King mini grants available PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities through the MLK Day of Service.

The North Country Regional Volunteer Center located at the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. is remembering Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday Jan. 21, by promoting volunteerism throughout Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties.

The North Country Regional Volunteer Center (NCRVC) is offering 7 mini-grants worth up to $300. The mini-grants will be awarded to non-profit agencies, organizations, and groups with the purpose of doing projects that use volunteers to complete the task at hand. There must be a clear benefit to the community at large, a non-profit organization, or a person affected by an adverse situation.

Only one agency/group from each county will be awarded a mini-grant. If there is no application from one of the seven counties the award will be given to an agency in another county.

Welcome 2013!

W

ith the Mayan Calendar ending on Dec. 21, 2012, for some, the idea we would all still be here for the year 2013 was unthinkable. But if you are reading this, then it is proof we made it.

So happy 2013 — everyone deserves a pat on the back for making it through a very interesting year. We witnessed our federal politicians maneuvering to avoid the fiscal cliff following a heated election that nearly divided the country, countless fatalities to senseless murder-suicides that no one will ever be able to make sense of; the voice behind the iconic red friend Elmo being denounced as a sex offender, and people are still facing a very uncertain economy.

Now that the champagne and sparkling grape juice have gone flat, the midnight resolutions have been broken or kept it is time for a fresh start. Even without the drop of an extravagant ball in Times Square people can still mark the beginning of a new phase, or the end of a bad habit to improve their lives.

According to a study by USA.gov, the typical new years resolutions include: • Drink less alcohol • Eat healthy food • Get a better education • Get a better job • Get fit • Lose weight • Manage debt • Manage stress • Quit smoking • Reduce, reuse, and recycle • Save money • Take a trip • Volunteer to help others As the cliche goes, every journey begins with a single step. Accomplishing goals and regaining happiness and fulfillment in your life can be achieved in the same way.

To loose those extra pounds get out and start a new morning routine of walking to the coffee shop. To drink or smoke less the steps to breaking the habits and addictions can be deep rooted and tricky. Find what works for you. Find a way to take your mind off of it and talk to people who have gone through it before. Chances are you aren’t the first to have troubles, so it is alright to ask for help.

Our social habits and associations, as much as our eating, drinking, and exercise patterns, can be just as much an anchor against progress.

If the friends you have surrounded yourself with for years seem to be standing still while

you try to move forward it’s okay to separate yourself from them. In life, not everything and everyone we attach ourselves to should be permanent attachments. Don’t be afraid to go to new places and don’t be afraid to learn new things.

The symbolism behind the new year is in the title: new. Human beings are forever growing and you need to create a life for yourself to facilitate growth.

Looking back again there were many positives to 2012. Nationally our president was elected to serve a second term, the US teams and athletes won 104 metals during the Summer Olympics in London. Regionally an Elizabethtown youth, Connor Marvin, who suffered from a rare inherited heart condition, received a heart transplant and a new chance at life.

While there is no Mayan calendar extending into 2013, the year is sure to bring plenty of positives — just as it is sure to unfortunately have its negatives.

Appreciates community support Letter to the North Countryman: I would like to take time to say thank you to some wonderful individuals and my community. The year 2012 is about to end but has marked the realization of the Chazy Public Library's dream of having a beautiful new library.

Dr. George Clark was our benefactor, the Trustees and Director of the library were instrumental in creating the design, and many volunteers helped us make the dream come true.

I was in charge of fundraising for this project and I was lucky to have some very motivated individuals; Angela Swan, Pat Neverett, Joann Trombly, Joyce Samonek,and Sue Foreman. They donated time, energy and money to this project.

Rick and Priscilla Laurin were very generous, they donated a queen size hand made quilt for us to raffle. Debby Powers was the winner. The community was the real winner. What does $6 billion buy?

T

he financial results are now in from the recent 2012 federal election. We've just participated in the most expensive election in U.S. history. Over $6 billion was spent by federal campaigns, super PACs, political nonprofits and the party committees.

Here is the split out of how the money was spent according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Presidential Candidates.... $1,377,000,000 House Candidates............. $1,010,000,000 Senate Candidates............ $720,000,000 Party Committees............... $1,800,000,000 Outside Groups................... $1,210,000,000 What troubles me is how so much money can be spent competing for these prized positions and yet once in office so little of the people’s business ever seems to be accomplished. Because of our early production deadlines for the New Years holiday I’m drafting this column five days before we are scheduled to go over the fiscal cliff. I can only hope that when you read this column the cliff has been somehow avoided, be it a last minute agreement or perhaps they get it done with a few hours to spare. Unfortunately I’m not optimistic they will get a deal done. They know what needs to be done but neither side is willing to give any ground and it appears both think the cliff will provide them cover from their constituents.

Prior to the Christmas holiday congressional Republicans were calling out the President and Democratically controlled Senate for not putting forth a plan to avoid the cliff. Now that the President has returned from Hawaii and the US Senate has been reconvened by Sen. Harry Reid they are dishing it back out to the Republicans who will not return until the weekend.

could do more than play childish games trying to show each other up and some Dan Alexander how in their Thoughts from self cenBehind the Pressline tered approach think that we buy these foolish antics?

Well, the sad reality is most of us fall into lock step behind our party affiliation. We let them play these games instead of demanding greater accountability.

In a recent Reuters Poll 27 percent of those polled blame Republicans, 16 percent blamed the President, 6 percent blame the Democrats and only 31 percent blame the whole bunch for the fiscal cliff debacle. With numbers like that is it any wonder our national elected officials have found it easy to play politics instead of solving problems? They have us exactly where they want us. We give them everything they want. We treat them like royalty. We are so gracious when they bring home our tax dollars and act as if it’s manna from heaven.

As a nation we should be so overwhelmingly outraged that we find our nation in this position. When it’s their election or re-election at stake these folks demonstrate they know how to get down to business and work tirelessly.

When it is the people’s business or needs, they somehow can’t get out of each others way. We have no one to blame but the person in the mirror and until we refuse to put any money into their re-elections nothing will really change. If we want real change let’s make the funds spent in the 2016 election the least expensive election in U.S. history.

PLATTSBURGH — The Too Tall String Band will perform on Jan. 4, at the Palmer Street Coffeehouse at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4 Palmer Street at 7 p.m. the cost is $10.

Too Tall String Band has a versatility and has wide musical influences by doing everything from Celtic songs and fiddle tunes to traditional Adirondack tunes & stories to "roots" country music and even a little bluegrass.

The band has been featured all across the North Country, Southern Quebec and Vermont. Too Tall first performed at the inaugural Watertown Goes Green Irish festival in 1984 and has been a headliner many times since then. “I did a Google search for horse artists, and his name came up,” call-Morin said. “I believe in serendipity, so I knew I had to go with him.”

The serendipitous moment came with the connection that one of the real-life horses that inspired the first part of the book, Bliss, shared a name with the artist.

Call-Morin contacted Bliss—the illustrator, not the horse—and asked if he’d do the drawings for her book.

She then sent him a rough layout of the book, complete with sketches and notes describing ideas she had for the images, and he responded by sending her 24 drawings.

“The drawings he sent were just wonderful—they really complimented the story,” CallMorin said.

The tale of two horses includes both the good and the bad aspects of life, and it was inspired by Bliss—the horse, not the illustrator—and her brother, Spirit.

In the story the two foals are born a day apart and go through different owners before finally finding happiness.

And for those readers who don’t know that a “foal” is a young horse, Call-Morin interspersed the text with info-boxes to explain the various equine-related terms used throughout the tale.

“I wrote the story because I’m concerned with animal welfare and abuse,” Katherine CallMorin said. “I wanted people to understand that owning a horse is not just about putting an animal in the backyard.”

Call-Morin has owned horses for about 13 years, and said that people can learn a lot from the hooved creatures.

“Part of their essence is that horses have an integrity to them, a predictability; they don’t have a hidden agenda,” she said. “The heart of a horse, if you would relate it to a human being, would be somebody who is like a horse—loyal, strong in character has integrity and is true to their word.”

She added that she hopes her story will be a resounding voice in inspiring people to treat animals with respect and compassion.

“They (horses) are really emotional, considerate and kind, and they sometimes fall into the hands of people who don’t have the heart of a horse,” Call-Morin said.

“Heart of a Horse” is about 50 pages long and is suitable for children 9 years of age and older. Three courses offered this winter/spring semester PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department and Clinton Community College Center for Community and Workforce Development have partnered to offer three non-credit fitness classes that will take place during winter session and spring semester of 2013.

The three courses are Couch to 5k, Half Marathon Training, and Introduction to Cycling. Each class will take place once per week at its scheduled time and location, and will capitalize on the regional strengths of the area by using the roads and recreational paths that are well-known for both running and cycling. In addition, all three classes will include a complementary City Recreation Center membership for the duration of the course.

Half Marathon Training will be offered by Olympic Trainer, Dr. Jon Mulholland, starting on January 21. The course will meet on Monday nights at 5:30p.m. and will run for the 12 weeks leading up to the Plattsburgh Half Marathon on April 21. As a licensed, seasoned, and accomplished professional Chiropractor, Exercise Scientist, and Strength and Conditioning Specialist with more than 14 years of experience with athletes of all ages, students will benefit greatly from his training program. He has worked with, trained, and rehabilitated multiple Olympic medal winners and professional athletes. Most

recently, he was the Sports Medicine Consultant for the New Zealand Olympic Cycling Teams and Team Doctor for the 2012 London Olympic Games. He plans to help students to run smarter, keep them injury-free, and improve their performance in time for this year ’s Plattsburgh Half Marathon. All levels of runners are welcome to register for this class.

Couch to 5k will be offered by Mary Duprey, a certified personal trainer and performance enhancement specialist in the North Country. The course will meet on Monday nights at 5:30p.m., starting March 18, and will run for 8 weeks. Mary is the head trainer for the City Recreation Department’s North Country Biggest Loser program, oversees the Employee Fitness Center at Pfizer, and holds several certifications and degrees in the field of sports medicine and fitness. The Couch to 5K Program is designed for beginning runners and will provide participants with a training plan, a group setting for support, and dedicated training partners to help everyone stay motivated and work toward the final goal of running a 5K race. The culminating event for this class will be the Treehouse 5K race on May 11, which is a charity race with proceeds going toward the Max Moore Memorial Treehouse, slated to be built along the Saranac River Trail. The course will balance informational class sessions with group workouts and will cover common

injury prevention and management, proper shoe/clothing selection, nutrition, heart rate monitoring, goal setting and more.

Introduction to Cycling will be offered by avid recreational cyclist, Phil VonBargen, starting on May 18. The course will meet weekly, on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30a.m. and will run for 6 weeks. For those interested in the fundamentals of safe cycling and/or those who are new or returning to the sport of road cycling, this course provides instruction and recreational rides starting on recreation paths, then into bike lanes, and eventually onto safe roadways. Distances will gradually increase each week from 2 to 15 miles. Participants will build confidence and skill so they can ride safely in the road and with traffic.
