Dodge Memorial opens its doors to the world of art

Dodge Memorial Library in Rouses Point will regularly feature paintings by various artists beginning this month. Artist Arthur Penfield Tremblay’s work, such as the papier colle piece seen at left, and a painting of the now former Champlain Bridge in Crown Point by Connie Cassevaugh, at right, are a few of the works being featured. By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Last year, Dodge Memorial Library held a couple art shows sponsored by the Northern Arts League. With their success, library director Donna Boumil came up with an idea. “I thought, ‘Why not use the library to promote local artists,’” Boumil recalled. “Not just the artists who are in the Arts League, but schools, daycare centers, different kinds of artists, different media.” Boumil set to work by sending e-mails to various people about an upcoming meeting she planned to see if her idea was possible. “I had about six people show up,” she said. “Very interested, all local people, and they were all for it. So, that’s how we started.” From there, the Artists of the Month program was established. For January, local

artists Arthur Penfield Tremblay and Connie Cassevaugh will have their artwork featured throughout the library. “We’re redoing what used to be the children’s room, and it’s going to be the multipurpose room,” said Boumil. “So, it’ll be displayed in there and in the main entrance way, and in the Ross Room. We’ll display some of the work in the main area, but up high, so it doesn’t get bumped into.” Boumil is hoping her idea will bring more people into the library. “A library is not just about books,” she said. “It’s about the community. It’s about getting all different people in here, all different walks of life in here, to see what we have to offer.” Boumil added although the library is small, they do have the space to show the art — which ranges from pastels, to watercolors, to photography. Cassevaugh, who is a professional artist with a degree from Pratt Institute, will fea-

ture works primarily done with pastels. “Since I work directly from life, I find pastel to be an ideal medium,” she said. “There is no drying time, where you have to wait for water or oil before you apply an additional layer.” “This is important for a landscape painter, because the sky and water are constantly changing and you have only a limited time to capture the scene,” Cassevaugh added. Tremblay, the other featured artist for January, works in a medium known as papier colle. “It has been used in the past, most recently of major note, by Picasso and Matisse,” he wrote in his biographical sketch, which will also be at the library. “These artists, however, used solid papers applied to canvas. Mr. Tremblay has altered this by making the process translucent. This technique brings certain vibrancy to the images portrayed.” This technique is one Boumil hopes Tremblay will teach to younger kids.

“Some of the artists, I have mentioned to them if they would like to do a lecture ... during the month that they are displaying their work,” she explained. “I have a couple people that would like to give lessons. We’re going to coordinate that.” Boumil currently has almost every month filled with a featured artist, with February featuring the Advanced Art Studio class at Northeastern Clinton Central School, and March featuring grades kindergarten through 5 at Rouses Point Elementary School. However, November and December are still up for grabs. If interested in featuring your artwork during either of these months, contact Boumil at the library at 297-6242. “I’m just very excited about having this and I think it will be successful and bring more people into the library to see what else we have to offer,” she said.”
