Highway department working on new home one year later

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com DANNEMORA — The construction of a new highway department garage in the town of Dannemora is almost complete one year after a devastating fire destroyed the former garage.

America “Ves” Pivetta, who assumed the role of town supervisor Jan. 1, 2010, was on his first day on the job when fire destroyed the Town Garage Road structure near Chazy Lake.

“It burned everything,” recalled Pivetta.

The process to replace the former garage — a circa 1961 Quonset hut — and the approximately $1 million worth of equipment inside was a long one, said Pivetta. Three snowplows and a front-end loader were destroyed, leading the town to purchase new ones to replace them.

“The three new snowplows were $166,000 a piece and the front-end loader was about $121,000,” said Pivetta. “After studying the situation, we didn’t try to get used equipment. We brought in new equipment because we wanted equipment that wouldn’t break down.”

“If you buy used equipment, it can cost way more money in parts and labor to keep it running rather than purchasing new ones,” added Pivetta.

The cost to build the new 90 sq. ft by 120 sq. ft. building was $2 million, funded partly by $400,000 provided by insurance coverage on the former building, said Pivetta. tively, to cover the remainder of the cost.

“We had to do what we did,” said Pivetta.

The council stopped short with plans to move the town offices to the new building, however, space was still allotted in the event the idea is brought forth in the future, said Pivetta. The idea was to not put any further burden on taxpayers by adding more to the project, the supervisor added.

“We’re letting the office part go for now, until we see what the future brings,” said Pivetta.

The highway department garage is roughly three-quarters complete, said Pivetta, with much of the exterior work such as siding, curbing and landscaping complete.

Highway Superintendent Howard “Pete” Barber said while the building is totally assembled, components for fire suppression and alarm systems are still on order and will need to be installed before crews can occupy the space. This week, the highway department was awaiting crews from New York State Electric and Gas and AmeriGas to connect power and install a temporary gas furnace until a “state-of-the-art” wood burning furnace is installed, said Barber.

Though ground was broken for the building in July, the construction process has been slowed by having to wait on parts and issues with contracts — not to mention inclement weather.

“Mother Nature has kind of beat us up a bit,” he said.

In the meantime, the highway department has been working out of a temporary job trailer and leaving its vehicles outside, which has caused worry for Barber.

“It’s hard on the hydraulic systems. Not really a good situation, but we’re making do by plugging them in and keeping the engines warm,” he said. “It’s been a little taxing on the men, but they’ve survived. A little cold on some days, but we’re alive.”

Though town officials are looking toward a March 1 move-in date. Barber said the wait won’t be so bad thanks to the help of neighboring highway departments.

Self defense can help with popular New Year’s resolution to get in shape

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — A new year has arrived, bringing resolutions such as losing weight and staying fit. Self defense is one way to do just that.

January is National Personal Self Defense Month which may be a good time to bring safety and fitness together.

David Boise, owner of Villari’s Self Defense Center in Plattsburgh, said there are a variety of reasons people turn to martial arts.

“Even though they say they want health and fitness, deep down inside we all go into martial arts for security,” he explained. “Traditionally martial arts was designed for health and fitness and then it leaned toward self defense.”

The Association for Women’s Self Defense Advancement brings light to some startling statistics — Every single day four women are killed by abusive partners; one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime; and a woman is raped every 46 seconds.

With statistics such as these, Boise said he’s been honoring January as self defense month by offering a women’s self defense class.

“Basically we work on gross motor skills,” he said.

“Gross motor skills ... are the first thing that lead you to a real self defense situation.

There’s a lot of psychological components to it.”

However, Boise has also seen the health benefits of learning self defense.

“I lost 55 pounds my first year,” he said. “It works the body naturally. Not using weights.”

“Now the big thing in fitness is using your own body,” Boise added. “It’s a combination of things — mental, physical, spiritually, finding your center.”

The bridge is still out, but the forest remains I

n an article published in the November 1925 issue of Outdoor Life magazine, the renowned naturalist Aldo Leopold wrote, “Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation's character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us.”

Leopold’s article, “A Plea for Wilderness Hunting Grounds, Outdoor Life,” written nearly a century ago, detailed the importance of preserving the wild character of public lands.

However, it remains as topical in the current day as it was in 1925. Despite massive state budget cuts, the curtailment of numerous programs, an exodus of DEC’s most experienced staffers, and the continued downturn in the national economy; the North Country’s economy has faired fairly well.

The doom and gloom scenarios that many forecasters had predicted did not strike our region as drastically as it has impacted many others.

Maybe all of our snow created a barrier that served to insulate the region from the severe economic swings that struck states such as Michigan and California.

Last winter, about this time of year, a decision was made to replace the Crown Point Bridge. Following the ensuing explosion, which destroyed the structure, came predictions that the national economy would continue on a downward spiral. In many respects, the forecasts have proven true.

New Yorkers have had to cope with the closures of numerous parks and campgrounds, as school aid decreased dramatically, and roads, bridges and other important infrastructure was allowed to deteriorate.

But despite the economic downturn and possibly, even because of it, evidence indicates that travelers continue to gravitate to natural areas where the opportunities for recreation are inexpensive, readily available and easily accessible.

From a market perspective, this is very good news for the North Country. The Adirondacks, and the dreams of wild places that the name conjures up, have helped the region survive the nation’s economic turmoil to a large extent.

Researchers at the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) have recently detailed an interesting trend, where the economy is actually responsible for driving people back to nature.

Compared to other recreational venues, the outdoors, the woods and waters are a real bargain.

Each year nearly 150 million Americans continue to enjoy the outdoors by hiking, rock climbing, bird-watching, mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, paddling, hunting and fishing.

However, wild places are also very restora-

tive and can offer a host of benefits beyond the stated economic and recreational factors, including stress reduction, a healthy lifestyle and high quality family experiences.

According to a recent OIA press release, “We see the economy driving people back to nature. This has tremendous implications for health and wellness issues.,” explained Christine Fanning, executive director, “Outdoor recreation is finally being recognized as part of the solution. Our position is that nature should be the first prescription.”

OIA research has also documented a shift in the mindset of many outdoor travelers and identified the growing demand from travelers that are simply seeking peace and solitude, rather than being motivated by high adventure.

However, the fact remains that at the very core of our culture, Americans are adventurers.

So too, were many of our heroes, from Daniel Boone to Teddy Roosevelt to John Glenn. We admire them because we all retain the need for adventure in our life.

In an increasingly modern world, Adirondackers should recognize how fortunate we are to have such a special place for adventure, recreation and solitude. We live in a wild place that continues to get wilder, as the rest of the world becomes more domesticated. We have experienced the return of the moose and bald eagles. Loons still dot the ponds, and peregrine falcons soar over the cliffs. Deer are plentiful, and heritage strains of brook trout remain in remote ponds. There are places where a man, or woman, can still become hopelessly lost. Such is the draw.

Certainly, there remains much to be done.

However, from the viewpoint of someone that usually has his boots on the ground, an oar in the water, an eye on the sky, a flyrod in hand or pine needles underneath his mattress; there is no place I’d rather call home!

New year brings new resolve Alcohol and its effect on older drinkers to understand the rest? Of course not, I just have to know they are doing those things with no end in sight, so maybe I should get with the program.

I plan to start with a Facebook account that blends a little personal stuff with course-related material. Being tech-support for my classroom/lab and nearly everyone I know, let’s just say I am very rich when it comes to content. I’m not sure if I can do something with Twitter or not, perhaps a decision on that will come after I see how the Facebook effort goes. No matter what, I will be happy to meet one professional resolution before the calendar rolls around again.

ere we are again at the time of the year when we ponder our shortcomings and use the New Year as an excuse for change. I never understood why we usually wait for a certain calendar date to arrive, but we do and it’s here again.

My personal resolutions are often the typical ones heard — work on the waist line, organize the basement, and learn more about a certain technology. Okay, maybe learning a new technology is slightly atypical, but of the three it is the one I am more likely to keep. It may be the thrill of reading for hours in order to learn exactly which selections to make while setting up a device or the joy of making something work. The stimulation of either one definitely trumps a decluttered basement.

Professionally, I resolve to better understand and incorporate social technology into the classroom. I have no earthly idea why the kids now-a-days will sit for hours texting on a phone, posting to Facebook, tweeting friends, or consuming YouTube videos. Alright, I get the YouTube videos but do I have

ccording to a study published in the journal BMC Research Notes, researchers in the Netherlands studied the effects of alcohol on 13 healthy men and women, all 62 years old or older.

The research participants drank two alcoholic beverages, and then walked on a treadmill. Once they reached a comfortable walking pace, thin blocks were placed on the treadmill belt for them to step over as they came toward them.

The participants all experienced difficulties stepping over the blocks after ingesting alcohol, due to decreased motor skills and reaction times.

What is also surprising is the amount of alcohol ingested was not over the legal limit for driving, although clearly there was a degree of impairment. Interestingly, all of the participants said they were unaware of any impairment in their abilities, in spite of the results of the test.

In a similar study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, University of Kentucky researchers recruited 42 men and women ages 50-74 and 26 men and women ages 25-35. The participants were given either alcoholic drinks or placebos and then asked to connect numbered dots as quickly as possible. Each participant took the test twice, 25 minutes after

drinking and again 75 minutes after drinking. The older folks were much slower at completing the task than the younger ones, even though they too reported they felt fine, with no impairments.

These studies show even small amounts of alcohol can seriously impact the cognitive and coordination skills of older people. Factor in prescription medications and any pre-existing physical impairments (poor eyesight, hearing problems, etc.) and the potential for a dangerous situation is very real.

The best solution is for older folks to not drive at all after having any alcohol.

esides lady beetles, another unwelcome winter guest is the cluster fly. These are the large, black, pesky flies that show up in bedrooms and on window sills from late fall through early spring. These flies are known as cluster flies, a name that describes their habit of clustering in large numbers inside attics, walls, and similar spaces in our structures.

Cluster flies do not reproduce indoors, and home owners bothered by these pests do not need to fear the flies are hatching from a dead animal or other unpleasant material within the attic or walls. Cluster flies develop as parasites inside the bodies of earthworms. There are three generations of flies produced each summer, and the final generation of the season migrates to houses and other buildings during mid to late September. Casual observation of client reports suggests houses located on an exposed hill top or high ground are most attractive to these migrating flies.

As the flies warm throughout the winter, and especially in the early spring, they come out of their cold temperature dormancy and begin sluggishly moving around. Their random crawling

brings them into the house by way of electrical outlets, window pulley holes, and small openings around windows, moldings and base boards.

Cluster flies are difficult to control in homes because they hibernate within inaccessible places. Because they hide inside walls or under insulation, they are usually not vulnerable to treatment until they appear within the living space of the house.

Preventing attic flies is a job for the summer and fall. As much as possible, seal cracks and openings around the outside of the house, especially under the eaves, as you would for energy conservation.

Unfortunately, there is little that can be done for flies already inside the attic and walls. Space sprays and fogs into the attic have little if any affect, as the flies are usually under insulation or deep in cracks and crevices. They do not fly around much in attics. Therefore, fly paper, fly strips and bug zappers are of no value. Flies buzzing within a room can be dispatched with a fly swatter, hand vacuum, or shop-vac.

he Northeastern New York Region of the American Red Cross comprises five chapters serving a population of nearly 1.9 million people in a 14,900 square mile service area. The region reaches from the mid-Hudson V Alley to the Canadian Border, with Chapter offices in Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Albany, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh.

In 2009-2010 fiscal year – Red Cross Chapters in the Northeastern New York Region: • Responded to 325 disasters across the region — primarily house fires. Trained Volunteers assist families with emergency shelter, clothing and food and support.

• Trained 76,217 people in CPR, first aid, water safety, use of automated external defibrillators, child care pet first aid and care giving.

• Prepared more than 11,000 individuals for disasters through our community disaster initiatives. Free Red Cross preparedness program

teach individuals, families, businesses, and students the basic steps that should be taken to prepare for emergencies.

• Assisted the NY-Penn Blood Region in the collection of more that 83,000 units of blood for use in hospitals in our region.

• Provided assistance to more than 9,400 senior citizens and residents in long-term care facilities through our Telephone Reassurance, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Lifeline Programs.

• Connected 849 military families during critical life moments such as births and deaths in the region. Red Cross staff and volunteers also educated 236 military families about our emergency communication services with our “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” briefing prior to their loved one’s deployment.

Pet care urged during cold winter months PLATTSBURGH —Pets should be cared for carefully during cold winter months.

On bitter cold days, officials urge pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets.

Pets should not be left out in the cold for long periods of time, according to New York State Office of Emergency Management. They should

have water brought to them periodically throughout the day. They also urge pet owners to purchase water bowls that prevent the water from freezing. Animals that are left out in cold temperatures can become frost-bitten, especially on their ears, tail and paws.

The effects of tobacco The health and economic impact of tobacco use in New York State is alarming. Each year, 25,400 adults die from their own smoking and 3,040 nonsmokers will die from second-hand smoke exposure. At current rates, 389,000 youth (0-17) are projected to die prematurely from smoking. Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.

During the 10 years the NYS Tobacco Control Program (TCP) has been operating, adult smokers have been reduced by 500,000 and youth smokers by 75,000. Our work is not done. Over 18 percent of adults smoke and almost 15 percent of high school students smoke. More than $8 billion are spent each year in health care costs directly related to smoking and over $6 billion spent in smoking related productivity losses.

The Tobacco Control Programs in your community are working diligently to decrease youth exposure to tobacco marketing in retail environments; provide help to quit smoking; increase the number of tobacco free outdoor areas, including parks, recreation areas, and worksites; and to create tobacco free college campuses. The tobacco companies spend billions of dollars each year to entice our children to smoke and to keep current smokers smoking. NYS needs to continue to invest in the work of the Tobacco Control Programs to provide tobacco free environments, eliminate tobacco marketing to children, eliminate exposure to second hand smoke, and to motivate adult smokers to quit.

Rescue squad fills baskets to fill stomachs and a need

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — The tradition of helping underprivileged families during the holidays is one that continues each year at Morrisonville Rescue Squad.

Thirty families received Christmas dinner baskets just days before Christmas in what has become an annual donation from rescue squad members since 2005. Advanced critical care provider Melody Stevens, who coordinates the event each year, said the effort involves working with the Saranac Central School District and Town of Schuyler Falls office to identify potential families who would benefit from a Christmas dinner basket filled with hams, fruits and vegetables.

“It was all possible because of donations we got from the community,” said Stevens, who credited a $250 donation from the Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Department for being among the major contributors.

Critical care provider Donna Bodette, who assisted Stevens with the effort, said the donations once again helped bring everything together for at least one complete meal for a family to have during the holidays.

“It included everything for the entire meal, so they really didn’t have to go out

and buy anything unless there was something really extra they wanted,” she said.

The baskets even included homemade raspberry cakes made by Stevens and her daughter, Myra Graham.

“That took us two days,” said Stevens.

“Thank God for my daughter.”

The number of families helped this year doubled from the previous year, said Bodette, which she attributed to an increased overall need in the community.

“We reached 15 extra families we didn’t last year,” she said. “I think we made a lot of people happy. And, it makes you feel good you can help.”

Ed Salverson of Morrisonville was among those whose families received a basket from the rescue squad. Living on a fixed income with his wife and with the two of them raising their 9-year-old granddaughter, Salverson said getting a helping hand with something as simple as a Christmas dinner means a lot.

“I thought it was very good,” Salverson said of the basket. “It actually came in handy but I also liked the personal touch with the homemade cakes. It was the first time I ever had a raspberry cake and it was pretty good.”

Salverson also said he knows his is not the only family to appreciate the help from the

“I think a lot of people appreciated it, especially with the cost of fuel and heating oil and everything else this time of year,” he said. “It’s a good gesture.”

Beverly Macey, also of Morrisonville, agreed.

“I think it’s amazing that they help people that are in need,” said Macey, whose family also received a basket. “It was great.

Everything you need to make a dinner was in there. It helped out a lot.”

And, because of a seemingly ever-growing need in the community, helping people through Christmas dinner baskets is something Stevens hopes to do for years to come.

“I’d like to keep doing it as long as I can, as long as I’m able,” she said. “Hopefully, next year, we can do 10 more and maybe hit 40.”

New regulations on outdoor wood boilers ALBANY — The first phase of outdoor-wood-boiler regulation has been approved by the New York State Environmental Board.

The new regulations will require the new outdoor wood boilers that are installed after April 15, will burn 90 percent better than the older models, according to the The Department of Environmental Conservation. These regulations do not apply to wood boilers that are currently being used.

New sidewalk not owned by Peru PERU — The installation of a sidewalk along School Street in Peru is finished. However, the town does not own it.

Three tests are to be completed before the town can take ownership, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. The sidewalk was built to prevent over crowding in the area. The work was covered by federal dollars, which permitted that the new sidewalk would be subject to testing, in order to meet federal guidelines.

Computer classes offered to seniors PLATTSBURGH — The Senior Citizens Computer Club offers computer classes for seniors at the Senior Citizen Council of Clinton County Senior Center, 5139 N. Catherine St., Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11 a.m. Those wishing to attend should call the senior center at 563-6180 to be added to the class list. Squier noted all trees brought to the landfill brush pile must be free of lights, ornaments, tree-toppers, tinsel and tree stands.

Also, if a tree is brought to the landfill in any sort of binding or bag, it must be removed before the tree is left in the brush pile.

“We understand a lot of people will want to bag their trees first to avoid getting needles everywhere,” he said.

Wreaths and centerpieces are also still accepted, provided they are also free of any metal, artificial framework or decorations.

The landfill, located at 286 Sand Road, is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Christmas trees may be dropped off during those hours only. Those wishing to dispose of their trees may also check with the respective municipal departments of public works or highway departments as well as their private trash haulers to see if tree pick-up service is offered, said Squier.

Otherwise, people are welcome to call the landfill at 563-5514 with any questions during regular business hours.

SCHUYLER FALLS — Now the holidays have come and gone, it may leave you wondering what you’re going to do with that still fresh-smelling Christmas tree. There’s one place that has you covered.

Craig Squier, general manager of the Clinton County Landfill, said the facility is again accepting Christmas trees for recycling free of charge through Monday, Jan. 31. The annual grace period, which traditionally begins the day after Christmas, waives the $5 fee charged by the landfill for accepting Christmas trees as brush, said Squier.

“It’s a little bit of a savings for them,” said Squier. “We’re glad to be able to do this for the county residents so they can dispose of them at the brush pile where the material is recycled.”

County residents are able to bring their real trees to the landfill where they’ll be directed to the brush pile, said Squier. There, residents can unload their trees into the pile and simply drive off when done.

“It’s really simple,” he said.

The idea of separating trees from other waste in the landfill is not only the law, but environmentally-conscious, said Squier, as the trees are run through a wood chipper in the spring to be used for other projects as mulch.

“And, [trees] are prohibited from going into landfill to conserve space for the type of refuse that needs to go into a lined landfill,” explained Squier. “Christmas trees certainly do not fall into that category.”

The tree recycling program often brings in hundreds of trees by the close of the program, said Squier.

“It’s hard to estimate in terms of volume, but we probably get about 100 to 200 cubic yards of Christmas trees,” said Squier.

Annual vintage snowmobile show marks 10th year Sunday

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Michael Relation thinks the Trailfinder Snowmobile Club has found a working formula for putting on an event that brings snowmobile enthusiasts from miles around year after year.

“It’s just the same thing as last year,” said Relation, referring to the annual Vintage Snowmobile Show.

The show reaches its 10th year this Sunday, Jan. 2, as the club hosts the event at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 309. It’s something Relation, as club president, looks forward to each time.

“It’s just one of those good events that

gives you something to do in the winter time,” he said.

The show centers mainly on snowmobile owners putting their various makes and models on display and includes a contest that awards prizes to the top machines in each class. The classes consist of 1966 and older, 1967-69, 1970-73, and 1974 and newer, as well as a muscle class, race class and mini class.

“There’s about a dozen classes depending on the ages of them,” explained Relation.

Relation said he would just like to see an increase in attendance this year over recent years.

“We usually get about 30 to 40 sleds, but out in Western New York, they’ve had

shows that bring in thousands of them,” he said. “I’m not sure how to make it any bigger.”

However, lower attendance is something most snowmobile shows are seeing regardless of where they are, admitted Relation.

“I honestly think it’s the economy,” he said. “Five years ago, the antique sled community was a lot more active. Back then, though, there were a lot more sleds still out there to find and restore. Now, they’ve pretty much been found or the collectors just can’t afford them.”

“But, there are still some available out there,” Relation continued. “People can get into it real cheap by buying them for a couple hundred bucks and fixing them up.”

Events like the Vintage Snowmobile Show are a great venue for those new to antique snowmobile collecting to learn more about the pastime, too, said Relation.

“That’s what we’re there for,” said Relation.

This Sunday’s show will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with registration from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Voting for winners in the respective classes will be held from 12-1 p.m.; trophies will be awarded from 2-3 p.m. The event will also include raffles of several donated items and refreshments are expected to be available. Admission is free.

Bodine Bobsled Challenge canceled

Activists pushing for continued funding for EPF

LAKE PLACID — The 2011 Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge has been canceled, according to its organizer, the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Inc., Chester, Conn.

The challenge, traditionally held the first weekend after New Year ’s Day, has brought NASCAR and National Hot Rod Association drivers together for the past five years to race modified bobsleds. The event raised funds to further research and development for the BoDyn Bobsled Project, which produces American-made bobsleds for the U. S. men’s and women’s Olympic teams.

“The Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge was a five-year plan. We are in the process of developing a different event format incorporating the stars of NASCAR and the NHRA for the future,” said Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project president Phil Kurze. “We will have more information about this later in the winter.”

PLATTSBURGH — A push from environmental activists continues to restore the Environmental Protection fund to its 2009 levels.

The fund was established in 1993, which has allowed Clinton and Essex counties to receive $10 million to $20 million, and Franklin County, $5 million to $10 million. About 99 percent of the money that makes up the fund is provided by the state real-estate tax. Officials question whether the money has been used for quality projects in 2010 and they hope to see better budget planning in the future.

WHEN

PLATTSBURGH — Malcolm White, an inmate at Clinton County Jail has admitted to repeatedly assault staff there. The 24-year-old’s most recent attack was in November when he assaulted a female officer, leaving her hospitalized with injuries.

Last week, White pleaded guilty to five counts of second-degree assault for the staff assaults. White will be sentenced Jan. 10.

Chazy American Legion to begin Sons Squadron

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — As members of the American Legion get older, additional help is needed to keep their mission alive.

Currently, the Russell B. Childs Post 769 American Legion of Chazy is working to begin a Sons of the American Legion Squadron, which will be the seventh of its kind in the county.

“Our particular Legion post in Chazy is a small post and our members are getting older and we don’t have the hands capable of doing the fundraising and stuff

like that that we need,” explained Steve Bowman, a 17-year member of the Chazy American Legion, and the Fourth District Commander of the American Legion.

“We want to stay around for a long time,” he added. “So, we need to start looking at spreading our wings a little bit and having more capability.”

Bowman explained the Sons of the American Legion are made up of sons, grandsons, stepsons and even great-grandsons of an American Legion member, an American military member, or an American military war veteran.

“If you have ... a World War II

vet that had passed away, any of his sons, or grandsons are eligible to be a member of the Sons of the American Legion,” he said.

Currently, Bowman, a veteran of Desert Storm, is considered a “dual hatter” as he is eligible to be a member of both organizations, because his grandfather was a World War II veteran.

Both organizations focus on raising funds for various programs and doing community work.

“Right now we’re running a program in the county to collect socks for soldiers over in Afghanistan,” Bowman ex-

plained. “We raise money for the American Legion baseball. We also raise money for the ... American Legion Emergency Fund, which helps American Legion families and posts that have had disaster-type issues.”

One disaster Bowman explained was Hurricane Katrina which “destroyed large communities in a vast area where there was a lot of Legion members.”

“There’s also a national scholarship fund that can be used for the children of troops that were killed overseas and for the children of those that were killed in 9/11,” he added.

Bowman said the Sons of the American Legion are “typically some of the bigger contributors nationally.”

Bowman said there are currently about five or six men who have shown interest thus far, including his son, Eric Bowman, and grandson, Isaac Bowman. There is a minimum requirement of 10 men for a squadron to get started.

“It’s just a good way to get the community involved,” said Bowman. “And to get back a little bit patriotically. That’s kind of what we’re looking for.”

“I used to belong to a group in Utica,” Butchko explained. “We just moved up here and I found there wasn’t really a group up here so I figured I’d get one started.”

Coming from the Mohawk Valley Astronomical Society, Butchko explained the group often shared general information about the moon, stars, sun and galaxies, and did a lot of public outreach.

Butchko said he first became truly interested in astronomy nearly 10 years ago, often just looking through his set of binoculars at all he can see.

“I think one of the best ways to get started is just to learn the basic sky,” he said. “A lot of people get a telescope and they want to see everything at first. I usually counsel them you should take it easy, get to know the sky, get a good pair of binoculars, get a star chart, and just try and find your way around that way.”

During the first NENYAS meeting, Butchko will present a PowerPoint project titled “A Dozen Astronomical Delights,” in which he will discuss the sun, moon, stars and galaxies.

“I’ll probably pick a very interesting galaxy, talk a little bit about that and then maybe talk about what you need to do to see that,” he explained.

Butchko is hoping anyone with any sort of interest will want to join in on the discussion and become a member of the society.

“We just like to get people together and share those ideas [of astronomy],” he said. “Some peo-

ple just like to look at the stars through telescopes, others like to actually look at the sun. Some of them like to look at the moon. some of them like to look at galaxies.”

“There’s got to be people here who probably have telescopes or even kids who get them for Christmas and just want to know how to use them,” added Butchko. “I’m not quite sure how it will go. It’s sort of an adventure.”

Carder dominates in Cougars win

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — The Northeastern Clinton Cougars knew they would need to have a big night in order to hand AuSable Valley their first Champlain Valley Athletic Conference division loss Dec. 22.

They got that big night from their biggest player.

Steven Carder combined 25 points with 25 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Cougars scored a 56-43 victory over the Patriots.

Carder controlled the glass on both sides of the court throughout the night, with 18 of his rebounds coming on the defensive end of the floor and six of his seven offensive rebounds resulting in a put-back hoop or a trip to the foul line for 13 of his 23 points.

The Cougars started the game leading 1412 after the first quarter, but then clamped down defensively and limited the Patriots offense to four points to take a 23-16 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Cougars increased the lead to 30-22 before the Patriots used full-court pressure to tie the game at 30-30.

The Cougars ended the third on a 7-0 run, however, thanks two a pair of assists and the three-pointer by Jamie Davison, who scored six of his 11 points in the third, giving the Cougars a 40-34 lead.

NCCS then outscored AuSable 16-9 in the final quarter.

Davison also added three assists and five steals in the win, while Logan Miller scored 10 points.

Richie Collins added six points and five

rebounds, while Tom Bedard scored four points and Rob Armstrong added three assists and two steals.

Kidney disease program begins PLATTSBURGH — The H.K. Freedman Renal Center will host a free two-part educational program designed for those who need to know about kidney disease and its treatment options, including transplantation.

The first program, “Kidney Basics and Treatments,” will take place this Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m. “Nutrition and Adjustment,” the second program in the series, is set for Wednesday, Jan. 12, also at 9 a.m.

The H.K. Freedman Renal Center is located in the CVPH Health Plaz on Plaza Boulevard.

GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Navy Seaman Ryan Z. Wojtowicz, son of Pamela M. Herrera of Cadyville, and Robert L. Wojtowicz of Daphne, Ala., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command.

During the eight-week program, Wojtowicz completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly “Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Wojtowicz is a 2009 graduate of Daphne High School of Daphne, Ala.
