Once walled off, the idea is to bring in mobile coolers and house them in the parking lot. County officials are seeking $400,000 in state funds for the construction of a new structure, which they hope to construct at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport. ItÕ s an ideal spot due to its centralized location off the Northway and existing water and sewer infrastructure, say officials. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ The quest for a new central kitchen for the countyÕ s senior nutrition program moved forward on Monday when lawmakers authorized spending $5,000 on design specs for a new building. The current location on Court Street is contaminated with black mold and would be prohibitively expensive to permanently remedy.

Last month, county officials set a deadline of May 30 to shut down operations and relocate to several temporary food prep sites. That plan has been nixed in favor of a new strategy to isolate the pair of contaminated coolers by building an interior wall around the units, an effort that is predicted to cost some $15,000 (as opposed to $60,000 for a new unit). Doing so, said officials, will avoid a total shutdown.

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Board Chairman Randy DouglasÕ resignation on Friday, May 22 will lead to a shakeup in the boardÕ s leadership, the first in nearly four years. While supers will vote on Monday, May 26 for the next chair and vice chair, the race seems all but mopped up. As Vice Chair, Bill Ferebee (R), of Keene, is the next in line to move up to the top slot. And the race for the new vice is decidedly tame, with senior supers Tom Scozzafava and Gerald Morrow flatly stating that theyÕ re not interested. Add this to the pending retirements Ñ at least three lawmakers are slated to hang it up at the end of this term Ñ and the huge crop of junior members, only a few candidates are left standing. Randy Preston (I), of Wilmington, has said heÕ s actively campaigning for the deputy position. Ò ItÕ s not over Ô til itÕ s over,Ó he said on Monday when asked if he felt confident about his prospects. Douglas will resign as Jay town supervisor on June 2 following the swearing in of the countyÕ s new leadership. The next day, heÕ ll begin his new gig in Plattsburgh, one of five members on the unemployment insurance review board. In Jay, itÕ s expected that the town board will select Deputy Supervisor Archie Depo (D) as interim town supervisor until a special election is held sometime this year. And with fall, of course, comes an election.
