Making Holiday Meals Easy on the Budget

M

any people worry about the expenses of the holidays. Individuals who are already pinching pennies and putting as much toward gifts as possible may want to keep holiday entertaining costs low. It’s possible to do so without sacrificing quality.

Christmas dinner is something families look forward to each year. Some enjoy a roasted turkey; others turn to cultural foods. Others may eat a big meal both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The hosts and hostesses who serve Christmas dinner often open their homes up to a number of guests to enjoy the meal. It’s not uncommon to find 10 to 12 friends or family members gathered around the dining table — and feeding all those people can get expensive.

One can expect to spend a hundred dollars or more on holiday foods depending on the menu items chosen; a large turkey alone can cost $25. If cocktails are part of the holiday equation, premium alcohol can run

$20 to $30 per bottle. If finances are tight, a big Christmas dinner can certainly put a strain on the budget. To cut costs, consider these frugal tips.

Shop the sales. Plan the menu in advance and comparison shop the non-perishable items. Stock up on the foods needed that can be stored in the pantry until preparation time. The closer a person shops to Christmas, the higher the prices on certain items may be.

Choose lower-priced foods. Who says filet mignon has to be served on Christmas? As long as the food is tasty, guests will enjoy it. Consider menu items that can be bought in bulk (less expensive) and turned into delicious meals. A platter of chicken with lemon-butter sauce could win rave reviews over the tired turkey anyway.

Don’t overdo it. Party hosts often over-buy food thinking there will not be enough. After crackers and cheese, salad, appetizers, and some other courses, guests may be stuffed to the gills and only pick at the main meal. Scale back the courses and

focus on one or two things.

Fill guests up with vegetables. Starches, such as potatoes and rice, and many vegetables are inexpensive and filling.

Serve a higher ratio of these foods to meats and poultry.

Have a holiday pot luck. Hosts can ask guests to bring one food item with them to lessen the financial burden. Friends and family will be more than happy to pitch in.

Consider store brands. Many store brand foods are equal in taste and quality to the brand name items ... but at lower costs. This is because store brands are not advertised and don’t have to pay for publicity. This can help budget-conscious shoppers save a little at the check-out.

Avoid pre-made foods. Convenience foods, like frozen appetizers or dips, often cost more per serving than if they are made at home from scratch. Scratch-cooking takes a little more time, but it is often more economical.

Skip the meal, altogether. If conversation and mingling are more the speed of the gathering, host a cocktail party instead.

Serve finger foods and one or two signature drinks. Less time around the table means more moments for merrymaking anyway.

How to Save Money on Holiday Shopping

T

he holiday season can prove an exercise in financial flexibility for many families. While the spirit of the season centers around faith and family, it’s easy for families to overdo it when it comes to holiday shopping. Parents can easily find themselves expanding their budgets to ensure their kids get everything on their wish list, while fellow shoppers may easily get lost in finding the perfect gift for family and friends.

While overspending might be a holiday tradition in many families, it’s no doubt the most costly as well. Credit cards often allow shoppers to overspend on holiday shopping, making January a cringe-worthy month for shoppers who put too much on plastic during the holidays and get the bills the next month. It’s always best to avoid overspending, but there are ways shoppers can extend their budget during the holiday seasons.

L OOK FOR “ NO INTEREST ” DEALS . “No interest” deals are not necessarily hard to find, but they might be a bit of a misnomer. Larger retailers sometimes offer no interest financing for 12 or 18 months on items that cost above a certain dollar amount. But these deals are only “interest free” for the designated time frame. This means no interest will be charged if the balance is paid in full (there’s often a minimum monthly payment) before the 12 or 18 months is up. However, if the balance is not paid in full, shoppers will be responsible for all interest that

Such efforts only take minutes but could save shoppers hundreds of dollars during the holiday season.

Shopping early not only gives shoppers access to more and sometimes better deals, but it also allows shoppers to spread out their spending over a period of several months instead of a few weeks. For example, instead of spending $500 in the weeks leading up to Chanukah or Christmas, holiday shoppers who start early might be able to afford a holiday budget of $600 to 700. Shopping early gives shoppers the opportunity to spread out their spending, which can also allow for a little more budgetary leeway as a result.

G O IN ON GIFTS WITH A FRIEND OR RELATIVE . When holiday shopping, it’s perfectly reasonable to share the cost of a gift with a friend or relative. The recipient won’t mind if the gift is from one, two, three, or four people, and each gifter will come away satisfied that their loved one got a gift he or she loves and no one’s budget was busted.

The Toys That Are Hot This Holiday Season

very child wants the popular toys for Christmas. Each year parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles head to the stores in search of those sold-out items and must-have gifts.

So what gifts are bound to be snatched from toy store shelves this season? Here are a few that kids are bound to be requesting.

f you feel stressed by the demands of the holiday season, you’re not alone. With so much to do — shopping, wrapping, cooking, baking, entertaining, and spending time with family and friends — many people feel overwhelmed and exhausted before the holidays even arrive. By using some simple time-management strategies, you can spend less time shopping and more time enjoying all that the season has to offer.

The best way to manage your time while shopping for the holidays is not to shop during the holidays. By shopping throughout the year with the goal of having gifts for everyone on your list before the Thanksgiving turkey goes into the oven, you’ll have more free time during the holidays to relax with family and friends.

And by spreading out your spending over the course of the year and taking advantage of sales, you can even end up with some extra cash in your pocket.

If you have to shop during the holiday season or there are some last-minute gifts on your list, here are some tips that can help you save time.

Set up a gift-wrapping station in a corner of your home so that you can easily wrap items as you buy them.

Check with stores about free wrapping or take advantage of

gift-wrapping services in malls that benefit charitable organizations. The fees are generally reasonable, so you can save time and donate to worthy causes.

Fun, Games Help Create Family Traditions

A

h, the holidays are nearly here once again — a busy time when most homes are bustling with visiting friends and family, shopping, cooking, parties and present-wrapping. Although parents have many things to check off on their to-do lists, they continually look for ways to navigate this hectic time and keep family at the top of the list. This is often done by finding affordable activities that bring the whole family together and fostering traditions that can be carried on year after year.

This is a time when keeping things simple will yield the most positive results. Tradition doesn't have to mean outdated or boring, and many annual rituals now have a modern twist. An afternoon walk or a game of touch football gets everyone active and outside. A day of cookie baking and decorating is fun, delicious and creates lasting memories.

Many families enjoy watching annual holiday television specials like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “It's A Wonderful Life.” This year, the iconic holiday favorite, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” comes to a fun and interactive DVD board game that will be the perfect activity for a family game night.

The benefits of holiday activities are boundless, and time spent together as a family is priceless. All of these suggestions promote communication, working together, fun and building annual family customs that can be enjoyed every holiday season.

The first step to make these activities a success is to get the fam-

ily excited. Let the majority decide what they want to do. Next, if cookie baking is the activity of choice, assign age-appropriate tasks for each family member. If everyone is going to sit down and play an interactive game like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the DVD Game,” “Scene It?” or another classic like “20 Questions” or “Charades,” designate a start time and give everyone a role. Perhaps the youngest child chooses the snacks and the oldest sets up the gameboard, cards or DVD player. If there is a large age-range, team everyone up with a partner who can help. Be sure to get rid of distractions, let phones go to voicemail and don't allow PDAs. Set aside a specific amount of time for the activity. Making sure to end a game or sport before kids get bored or frustrated is key, and that gives parents a set time to resume errands and projects.

Also, be flexible whenever possible. Bend the rules a bit if it makes family games more fun. Don't worry about a mess in the kitchen until the baking is done, and let kids help even if it means the project takes longer.

No matter how you choose to keep everyone entertained during the holiday season, the most important thing is to enjoy being together. These are the memories that will last the longest, no matter what the season brings.

The Gift of Volunteerism for the Holidays

onating is a popular way to show appreciation during the holiday season, but not every household has the funds to donate this year. In lieu of making a financial donation, a gift of time and service is just as valuable.

Research indicates that 50 percent of charitable donations are made between Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the season of hospitality and togetherness, making charitable donations is ever-present in many people's minds.

However, financial insecurity due to the sluggish job market and economy will likely result in more people hoping to volunteer their time instead of their finances this holiday season.

Volunteering one's time is a way to give back without expending funds. Just as charities and other organizations are in need of money to operate their causes, they also need manpower to put plans in action.

Busy people may think they don't have the time to volunteer, but this is not the case. According to Charity Guide, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting flexible volunteerism by inspiring and facilitating acts of kindness, volunteer work can take as little as 15 minutes per week and be based on a flexible schedule.

Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed to bestow life and fertility, while also protecting against poison and serving as an aphrodisiac.

Mistletoe would later take on a more political meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe came to symbolize the emasculation of the old king by his successor.

Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or entryways from one room to another. This tradition can also trace itself back several centuries to the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. Throughout Europe, mistletoe was placed over doorways in the house as well as the stables as a means to preventing the entrance of witches.

The tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likely stems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and is often associated with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a period of merrymaking that pre-dated Christmas. In 18th century England, a young lady standing underneath the mistletoe could not refuse to be kissed. Once kissed, the kiss would signify deep romance or eternal friendship.

History also suggests that mistletoe was a symbol of peace. In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace. When standing underneath the mistletoe, enemies could declare a truce and spouses could end any marital turmoil with a kiss.

Ingredients:

Directions:

1 1/2 cups butter, softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt

1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.

Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).

2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

3. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Things to Keep in Mind With Gift Returns

M

any of the gifts bought this holiday season will end up becoming returns. But not all of those returns or exchanges will be easy. Stores have return policies to protect themselves from fraud and financial loss. The wise consumer knows what to expect.

The public is no longer living in the 30-day-money-backguarantee world. Stores are tightening their belts on returns and that’s important information to know when the holiday season has ended.

S HORTER D EADLINES . Many of the items in stores have finite “expiration” dates. Clothing styles are always evolving and technological advancements can make one product the latest and greatest one day and obsolete the next. That means stores have to be stringent on their return deadlines to ensure they’re not restocking “old” merchandise no one else will buy.

Some stores will allow 2 to 3 weeks for returns. Retailers may count purchases made during the holiday season as if they took place on December 24. That means the clock starts ticking from Christmas onward for returns.

R ESTOCKING F EES . Stores may charge a restocking fee of anywhere from 10 to 20 percent to take back items that have been opened. This is particularly true with electronics or appliances.

Whenever possible, if the item received will not be used, do not open the packaging.

Opened items that are truly inoperable should be returnable without a restocking fee.

E XCHANGE OR S TORE C REDIT. Keep those gift receipts in a safe place. Gone are the days when stores will take back just about anything. Today, many retailers want to see the receipt, even if the tags are in place. If a receipt is not available, the item may be exchanged for store credit, and that credit will usually reflect the current “sale” price of the item. Generally this price is

lower than the purchaser paid a few weeks earlier. Having the receipt handy means the greatest dollar value can be given on the returned item.

R ETURN D ATABASE . A consumer ’s return history could be tracked at particular stores. Retailers often have a computerized system that tracks returns made, frequency and whether a receipt was used. Individuals who are frequent returners may find more difficulty returning items, especially those without a receipt.

If the cashier asks to see a driver ’s license or other identification when items are taken back to the store, that’s a likely sign a shopper ’s return history is being recorded.

M AIL -B ACK O NLY. Some retailers that operate both online and with brick-and-mortar stores will allow items bought via the Internet to be returned at a physical store. Others will not. Be sure to know the return policy of online merchants to facilitates the process. Remember, oftentimes returning items through the mail requires that postage be paid by the person doing the returning.

Go Green With Holiday Cleanup This Year

T

he holiday season has arrived. Celebrations and gifts will be at the forefront of the festivities. Once all of the gifts are torn open, there are bound to be mounds of wrapping paper in each and every home, which can mean damaging waste for the environment.

Wrapping paper, boxes and ribbons tossed straight into the garbage can mean that pounds of added trash will end up in landfills across the country. According to the Clean Air Council, an additional 5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays in the United States. Four million tons of that waste is wrapping paper and shopping bags. There are smarter solutions to dealing with holiday clean-up.

The first step is choosing environmentally responsible wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished wrapping paper may not be easily recycled — or even recyclable at all. Instead, look for wrapping paper that is made from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycled once more.

Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brown mailing paper and decorate the outside

with earth-friendly paints.

Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesn't really serve a functional purpose, except for further delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper alone accounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person will be saving money and the environment.

Here are some other green cleanup tips: Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbons and bows can be reused, as can many gift boxes and bags.

Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reduce their volume and require fewer trash bags for transport.

Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-filled wraps to be recycled.

Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at a facility that does so.

Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching. Many communities collect trees after the season is over for this purpose.

Because there is bound to be some extra garbage during the holidays, individuals can take steps to curb trash in other aspects of their lives this time of the year.

Some ideas include using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery instead of disposable items.

Before purchasing new gift paper, sort through last year's collection to see what items can be reused. Cutting the front off of holiday cards and using them as gift tags is another way to recycle.Lots of gifts under the tree can mean mounds of trash once the presents are opened.
