In Memory

By Joe Milliken

newmarketpress@denpubs.com RUTLAND Ñ Last Friday and Saturday, the Rutland Youth Theatre Group performed two, Broadway renditions of Ò Peter Pan The Musical, at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland. The unique production of this kidsÕ classic based on the story of a boy who doesnÕ t want to grow up, featured a live orchestra, flying props and a young group of very enthusiastic young actors. Director Saskia Hahen Groom hired a company from Tennessee called D2 Flying Effects, who rigged up a flying apparatus at the theatre as to allow kids to fly across the stage and swing from a pendulum during the performances of Ò IÕ m FlyingÓ , Ò I WonÕ t Grow UpÓ and Never, Never Land.Ó After all, what is a performance of Peter Pan without any flying? The Rutland Youth Theatre Group is part of the Rutland Recreation & Parks Department and is a program that is open to all young people throughout the county - kindergarten through high school - who are interested in acting and the theatre. In Poultney, the Poultney Theatre Company recently offered two performances of their annual Scrooge & Company, a dramatic reading of the Charles Dickens classic Ò A Christmas Carol,Ó performed at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, NY one day, and the Poultney High School Library for the other. Conceived and directed by Gary Mietrott, his version combines the story words with theatrical movements and embellishments in order to create a more lively and tangible reading for the audience. Donations are encouraged and all proceeds from the events go to the Dick Wright Fund in support of the Poultney High

Students from Otter Valley, Stafford Technical Center, Proctor HS, Fair Haven UHS, cops and community members all came together to dedicate the 2010 Southern Vermont Red Ribbon Tree to memorialize victims of drunk or drugged driving.

Stafford SADD Chapter Donates Food CLARENDON Ñ The Stafford SADD Chapter recently donated a large number of items, to the new Clarendon Food Shelf. The Clarendon Food Shelf is managed by the Clarendon Town Health Officer, Roxanne Phelps, who is also the mother of Stafford Technical CenterÕ s SADD Chapter President, Cierra Phelps. The decision to help out the food shelf came about after a cardboard box marked “food shelf” was put outside the door of the Public Safety Services Program Classroom at the College of St. Joseph for recycling, and was found in the same spot the following morning with a number of donated items in it. The SADD members saw this as an indication that they should do their own food drive. The SADD membersÕ food drive was ended in time for the Clarendon Food Shelf to use the food as part of holiday food baskets that they are making for disadvantaged members of the Clarendon community. Another part of the food donation will be used to stock the food shelf. Stafford SADD members who were involved in the project were: Amber Hannan, Alan Greenier, James Reed, Aaron Bosch, Cierra Phelps, Haley Cotrupi, and Korey Russell, all seniors from Mill River Union High School, Ginger Vaughn, Nicole Bogucki, and Kim Rupe, juniors from Poultney High School, Emily Johnson, a senior from West Rutland HS, Ashley Smith, a senior from Otter Valley Union High School, and Kyle Lenher, a senior from Proctor High School.

At right: Kim Rupe ( Poultney HS), Ashley Smith (Otter Valley ), Cierra Phelps (Mill River), Emily Johnson (West Rutland) and Alan Greenier (Mill River) with some of the food donated by the Stafford SADD Chapter to the Clarendon Food Shelf.

end of the year so that the music programs will receive a cash infusion of $40,500. MSJ and CKS hope to expand and modernize the music equipment made available to students-- and to offer a strings program that would enrich the lives of their students and the community. In recent years, the popularity of the music programs at both schools has increased tremendously, as students flock to the music departments to learn instruments ranging from the flute to ukulele to electric guitar.
