Fate of postal center under discussion By Lou Varricchio newmarketpress@denpubs.com The U.S. Postal Service is considering the fate of the White Ri ver Junction mail pr ocessing facility. The USPS is facing a massive budget deficit and eVr-
mont’s large postal center may be on the chopping block. A public meeting will be held Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. at the American Legion in White River Junction to discuss the postal service’s plans. Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) said that if
the facility is closed, 245 postal workers could either lose their jobs or be assigned to other facilities. In the event the White River Junction facility is closed, the additional mail would be pr ocessed at the USPS Essex Junction, Vt. or Manchester , N.H. centers.
Snowmaking helps resort owners in Vt. By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com KILLINGTON—Alpine r esort owners in V ermont can thank Mother Nature and engineers for extending the ski season. Engineers and snow? What’s the connection? Mother Nature isn’t always forthcoming with the white stuff, so thanks to the invention of the snow cannon by a trio of New York engineers—Art Hunt, Dave Richey and Wayne Pierce—back in 1950, ski resort in the region keep bringing in the green all season long. The engineering trio’s first snow cannon went into operation first at Gr ossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel in downstate New York although snowmaking didn’t take off until the early 1970s. Now every Vermont (and New York) ski center of note depends on the gizmos. According to Bolton Valley’s Josh Arneson, the minute temperatures drop into the “snowmaking zone”, the Vermont resort’s snowguns are fired up. When the 2011-12 ski and snowboard season at Bolton kicked off Dec. 10, the snow was there. See SNOW GUNS, page 8
Snowguns began making snow at Bolton Valley recently. Killington, Okemo and other Vermont ski resorts have super snow for skiing and snowboarding, albeit artificial stuff. More snow may arrive in early December.
