Merrill Honored Ludlow Community Helps BRGN

Joan Merrill, Black River Academy Museum (BRAM) Treasurer for the past eight years, was feted by BRAM at its recent Trustees meeting to honor her work with the museum. During her tenure as treasurer, she helped guide the museum through the arduous task of financing the new elevator wing on the historic BRAM structure.

In presenting the photograph of early Ludlow to Merrill, BRAM Director Georgia Brehm noted the hard work that Merrill tackled and her willingness to give "110 percent of herself in helping the museum deal with the dynamics of sustaining a not-for-profit group such as BRAM." The weather did not hamper the efforts of Black River Good Neighbors (BRGN) in collecting food and monetary donations to resupply its food shelves for the coming needs of the Christmas and Winter seasons.

BRGN, in addition to its on-going efforts to support those in need throughout the area, especially during the cold months ahead, also has a major need for food and money to support its efforts to provide food during the Holiday season.

In its efforts to ensure a good food collection, BRGN representatives also were at both entrances to Shaws in Ludlow to solicit aid for the food shelves. Thanks from the BRGNS for Donation from Thanksgiving Service On Nov. 22 an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service was held at the United Church of Ludlow. Conducting the service were Pastor Don Harpster of the United Church, Pastor Abraham Gross of Cavendish Baptist Church and Pastor Margo Marrone of the Tyson Congregational Church.

During this extraordinarily beautiful service a collection was taken and all of the pastors involved agreed that the entire collection of money and food would be donated to Black River Good Neighbor Services. United Church in particular has been and continues to be a tremendous blessing to BRGNS: helping us help those in need.

We are very grateful to everyone who attended and wish you all a joyous Christmas.

Feminine Tone Presents “Music Without Borders” Concerts

The Feminine Tone is proud to present “Music Without Borders,” the women’s chorus’s annual holiday concert, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the United Church of Ludlow at 48 Pleasant Street, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20 at the Hartland Unitarian Universalist Church at Hartland Four Corners.

“Music Without Borders” celebrates the healing, unifying power of music which so uniquely transcends all borders, language barriers, and ideological differences.

Led by artistic director Maricel Lucero of Springfield, VT, the chorus will honor Christmas through many musical traditions. These include the rousing “He Came Down” from Cameroon Africa, an exciting sextet arrangement of the French carol “Patapan,” and three Latin pieces, one being a contemporary mass performed a cappella in both Latin and English. The Jewish tradition will shine through the joyful song, “Yism’ chu Hashamayim” accompanied by piano, flute, and Latin American percussion.

A mixed set of contemporary and traditional pieces will honor the American Gospel tradition.

The contemporary “Ain’t I a Woman,” featuring the warm alto voice of Jen Duhamel and accompanied by a bluesy piano, recalls the words and spirit of Sojourner Truth. The contemporary, spirited “Listen to the Angels Shouting” by Clifton Noble Jr. will complement traditional a cappella pieces such as “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” featuring soloist Maricel Lucero, and the upbeat “Elijah Rock.”

Cavendish Community Fund Announces Educational Grant Awards The Cavendish Community Fund has announced the award of four educational and cultural grants for projects in Cavendish.

CCF will again help support the Cavendish Community Theater ’s summer production. The theater has produced several plays over the past few years, all of which played to packed houses, and CCF is proud to be a major sponsor

again in 2010.

Two projects were funded to benefit children who attend Cavendish Town Elementary School. A trio of teachers has developed curriculum for fourth, fifth and sixth graders that takes advantage of interactive learning using advanced technology at the school. CCF funded additional technology to advance these learning opportunities. In the

other project, a local citizen will create a class this year to teach photography to Cavendish school children.

Finally, CCF has funded materials specific to a multicultural educational program at Stepping Stones Preschool.

The Fund will announce the deadline for the next round of grant applications sometime early next year.

Lighting Ceremony for Plymouth Memory Tree, List of Remembrance A lighting ceremony of the Plymouth Memory Tree was held on Nov. 29 at the Tyson Congregational Church.

Weston Craft Show Attracts 2,700, Raises $20K Show featured 46 juried Vermont artisans Weston Craft Show assistant chair, Merrie Kujovsky, reached into a basket and selected the name of Susan Langley of Chester as the winner of a Caryn King original folk art portrait of a handsome rooster.

The drawing wrapped up the 26th Annual Weston Craft Show by awarding to one of the responders to the show’s questionnaire this much admired prize. As part of the questionnaire visitors were asked to vote for their favorite artisan. Entirely coincidentally folk artist Caryn King was honored to win the People’s Choice award.

The 2009 Show, held at the Weston Playhouse over Columbus Day Weekend, featured 46 juried Vermont artisans displaying an amazing array of beautiful hand-made objects. The show attracted over 2,700 attendees which represented a 20 percent increase in attendance over the previous year, and the highest attendance since 2004.

The Weston Craft Show is an all-volunteer effort.

Chair Nancy Donnelly thanks all those who participated as well as all those who supported the show with their attendance. She is pleased to announce that the show raised $20,000 for the preservation and maintenance of Weston’s historic properties: the Farrar-Mansur House, the Old Mill, and the Craft Building and $4,000 for the Weston Community Association’s Endowment Fund.

The 27th annual Weston Craft Show will be held on October 8, 9, and 10, in 2010.

Okemo’s Trot It Off 5K a Gobbling Good Time Okemo Mountain Resort’s “Trot it Of.” The resort’s five-kilometer road race and Tots’ Trot race for kids took place Nov. 28 with 72 participants.

The Tots Trot was a half mile sprint around The Jackson Gore Inn. The top three finishers were MacKenzie Spadinger, 12, of Shelton, CT (3:32.55); Olivia Thayer, 10, of East Haddam, CT (3:52.34 ); Will Hornyak, 9, of Longmeadow, MA (4:07.40).

Taking first place was Mike Ioffredo, 16, of Melrose, MA (20:32.21). Second place honors went to Clay Howland, 43, of Providence, RI (20:44.63), and David Burrows, of Ticonderoga, NY, placed third (20:52.55 ).

The first woman to cross the finish line was Lauren Germano, 21, of Glastonbury, (26:31.93). Amy Grundt, 37, of Providence, RI, finished second (27:06.30) and Teresa Eagan, 49, of North Kingstown, RI, was third (27.28.75).

The Trot it Off Race raised $1,000 in proceeds to benefit the Patch Chit Neighbor in Need Fuel Assistance Program.

Proctorsville Community Luncheon The Community Luncheon in Proctorsville will be held on Dec. 17 at 11:30 a.m. at St James United Methodist Church, Main Street.

Lunch will consist of roast pork loin with applesauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, mixed vegetables, a tossed salad, hot rolls, and an ambrosia for dessert.

There will be a group of kids from CTES with carols and music, and other surprises as well.

News and Notes from the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce Submitted by Marji Graf Executive Director, Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce The month of December is a busy time in the Okemo Valley.

You can take Scottish Dance classes at MacLaomainn’s Scottish Pub in Chester on Tuesday nights, sing and play at open mic nights at Curtis’ All American Restaurant on Wednesday nights or have dessert and listen to Spencer Lewis at the Gill Home in Ludlow.

The weekend offers so many great things to do, it will be hard to decide. On Dec. 12, Chester hosts their Overture to Christmas from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Dec. 9 we are having our Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting at the Gill Home in Ludlow. All are welcome. Our guest speakers are Secretary of State Deb Markowitz, Linda Rossi from SBDC and Darcy Carter from the SBA. Learn what resources are available for small businesses. You must call the Chamber office to rsvp.

During the Holiday Season, several area businesses have band together to raise funds for two local food banks; Black River Good Neighbor Services in Ludlow and the Chester Food Bank.

Twelve local businesses have chosen to “almost” bare all, to bring food and heat to their neighbors who may have to go without this winter. With an exclusive printing of “The Men of the Okemo Valley 2010

Calendar”, the Chamber of Commerce hopes to raise money for these area food banks and other projects throughout the year to promote our Okemo Valley.

Calendars will be available for $20 on Dec. 9 after the annual meeting and Dec. 10 at the following businesses and the Chamber office: Northern Ski Works, Timber Inn Motel, The Killarney, CZ Construction Management, MacLaomainn’s Scottish Pub, Lisai’s Chester Market, Inc., Pleasant Valley Foods, Cool Moose Café, Hunter Lea Gallery and Frame Shop, Stone Hearth Inn & Tavern, Misty Valley Books and Blue Sky Trading Company.

December 11 and 12 Black River Academy Museum presents the 9th Annual Open House and Play “Motley Tales” 6 p.m. in Ludlow.

December 12 the Mount Holly Elementary School has a Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site has an open house in Plymouth from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On December 16 we will have our Chamber Holiday Party and “Okemo Valley Calendar Men” Reveal from 6-8 p.m. at the Cool Moose Café in Ludlow. Get autographs and Vote for your favorite month, cutest, bravest, funniest, most courageous, etc.

Okemo Cares and Shares Food Drive Event

News from the Rutland County Humane Soc.

During this holiday season of giving, it is also time to consider the needs of those less fortunate. On Sunday, Dec. 13, Okemo Mountain Resort will host its annual Cares and Shares Food Drive.

When skiers and snowboarders donate at least three non-perishable food items, a new child’s toy or new clothing item, their generosity will be rewarded with an entire day of skiing and riding at Okemo for just $25.

Okemo Mountain Ambassadors will be accepting donations in the Clock Tower base area throughout the day and Black River Good Neighbor Services Christmas Basket Program will help distribute the donated items to needy families in time for the December holidays.

In addition to gathering donations for the Cares and Shares Food Drive, Okemo will donate 100 frozen turkeys to the cause.

“We want to make sure every family in the Okemo Valley has plenty to eat this holiday season,” says Okemo Events Manager Liam Fracht-Monroe. “This is a great way to get our guests involved in the local community and it’s a great way for Okemo to play a part.”

The homeless animals at the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) would love to be added to your holiday list this year!

Each ornament on the holiday tree in the RCHS shelter represents a different item the animals at the shelter need this holiday season. Stop by, pick out an ornament, purchase the item and watch the homeless animals howl and meow with glee.

Some of the items on this year's wish list include HE laundry detergent, 13 and 33 gallon trash bags, sturdy eight foot dog leashes, pig ears, big rawhide bones, brooms and dustpans, gift cards to local pet merchants, paper towels and Q Tips.

JeanPierre, a French voyageur from Quebec, traveled the Connecticut River to the Black River to pay a visit to the CavendishTown Elementary School fourth graders. He brought with him beaver and fox pelts and talked about how he worked for the Hudson Bay Trading Company.

He also shared stories of his travels, including a story about an encounter with a black bear, as well as a story about his Indian friend, Kahote.

The Grammar School Art Program Welcomes Visiting Artists The Grammar School welcomed two visiting artists in residence in November.

Sculptor Andrea Stix Wasserman and muralist Terry Sylvester were funded by a grant from the Clowes Fund.

Wasserman spent two days at The Grammar School working with kindergarten and first graders to create personal sculptures in the outdoors. TGS art teacher William Chambers remarked, “The kids were so enthusiastic and excited about working with her. Her focus was on nature and the value of place, and the children were thrilled to choose their own settings and make their sculptures.”

First grade teacher Ginny Bianco noted that each child made a permanent display as well as an item to take home. Students described the process of making wind chimes from recycled copper and brass pipes, and glass beads “to make the music.

If you heard all of the wind chimes together it would be like a whole orchestra!”

Every child participated in the entire process, from threading the chimes together to hammering them into the ground for the permanent installation. The students also were excited by an individual activity where they made gnomes of felt that they “put in little nests” in handmade boxes filled with moss acorns, pinecones, leaves, and rocks.

Bianco said, “Wasserman was wonderful with the kids and dedicated to making sure that everyone had a good experience.”

Vermont Yankee: Too Close or Not too Close? The VT Electrical System Doesn’t Need Fixing Editor, the Outlook: First the good news; according to a report issued Oct. 15 by the U.S. Energy Information Agency, Vermont continues to have the lowest electricity prices in New England.

Now the bad news; the low rates may not last. Many Vermont lawmakers want to close Vermont Yankee, which sells the state a third of its power for the bargain basement price of four cents per kilowatt.

Every other form of power is more expensive. Given Yankee's low price, and its very low carbon dioxide

Muralist Terry Sylvester worked with all students at the school to create four 4 ft. by 8 ft. panels that will be displayed on campus when completed. Second graders described the mural project as “the whole school mural, with a painting for each season.”

Children explained how they chose colors that “showed up well and moved out, like 3-D,” and how the mural had words integrated into the design of each panel, spelling out “Welcome to TGS!” Overriding themes included in the paintings are sun, space, river, flowers, animals, and birds.

Art teacher William Chambers commented that the most impressive part of the project was that each student thought of an idea for the overall plan, and Sylvester helped make all those ideas into a final cohesive design.

Every student from kindergarten through 8th grade was engaged throughout the process. Eighth graders commented that “it was really nice that we got the opportunity to combine all of the different skill levels of the Grammar School students to create a community art project,” and how amazing it was to have the chance to work with a professional muralist.

Members of the community are encouraged to get a regular seasonal flu shot this year.

River Valley Technical Center’s Culinary Program

Story and Photos by Robert F. Smith – Editor The Culinary Arts Program at the River Valley Technical Center in Springfield serves up to 40 students from five sending schools in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Run by Chef David Groenewold and Chef Donna Vargas, the program is considered one of the best in the state. The program is open to juniors and seniors and the occasional sophomore, and includes operating a working restaurant, the River Valley Cafe, which is housed right in RVTC adjoining the school’s classroom kitchen.

“We run a full food service operation here,” said Groenewold. We teach safety, sanitation, operation of equipment, baking skills, hot food and communication and dependability. Communication and dependability are two critical skills that we are really focusing on this year.

“If a student is going to be absent, they have to phone in and let us know, just like they would at a regular job. This is a field where dependability is very important if you’re going to be successful.”

Groenewold said that his program works closely with the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, one of the better chef’s schools in the country. NECI sponsors many of the cooking competitions that RVTC students compete in.

“We stress job placement in the course as well,” Groenewold said. “We stress that kids graduating be employable. They have a portfolio and the critical human skills to be successful in the work place.”

Chef Groenewold has been with the program for six years while Chef Vargas is in her 23rd year as an instructor. Both commented on the high level of professional quality they have in the RVTC kitchen facilities. There is a fully furnished baking room, where students bake the breads and desserts served in the River Valley Cafe. There is a large walk-in refrigerator and a walk-in freezer.

The kitchen is larger than those found in many a restaurant, and in addition includes a hands-on instruction area at one end. As with any professional kitchen, there is a sandwich station, fryer, two large gas stoves and ovens, a pass-through with warming lights, a salad station, and more.

who runs the Hospitality Program at RVTC. Students in Hospitality work the front of the house as servers, and the Culinary Arts students also take their turns as part of the wait staff.

Anyone can come into the River Valley Cafe, where the Culinary Arts students serve an excellent, and relatively inexpensive, dinner every Wednesday and Thursday.

The menu, and the quality of the service and cooking, is as good as you’ll find in a good restaurant anywhere. Last week’s menu included cream of butternut or broccoli cheddar soups, dijon chicken with mashed potatoes, London broil with mushroom sauce, eggplant pesto, sauteed vegetables with fresh herbs, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, seasonal apple crepes and chocolate fall fruit pudding cake with chocolate sauce.

The food fit two primary criteria for any good restaurant – it was beautifully flavored and served hot. With entrees priced at $6, sandwiches at $5 salads running from $3 to $5.50, and all desserts at $1.50, eating at the River Valley Cafe may be the best dinner bargain in Springfield. It’s well worth a visit, and a chance to see the great RVTC culinary program in action.

Gallery At The VAULT Earns Vermont State Craft Recognition

a special plaque to commemorate being designated as a “Vermont State Craft Center.”

This is indeed a very prestigious honor, given on rare occasions and after a lengthy process which involves applying through the State Craft Center Overview Committee as

well as the state’s Standard Group.

A specific criteria must be met in order to be considered for such an honor.

“A total of six Vermont galleries applied for this distinction and we are one of only two organizations to be granted this high

honor,” VAULT retail director Nina Jamison stated in a recent interview.

The Artisans Hand in Montpelier was also given the honor.

The specific criteria for galleries and educational organizations is based on the quality and diversity of the Vermont crafts displayed in galleries or the quality of classes offered by an educational organization.

Gov. Jim Douglas was on hand to present the gallery with a special plaque to commemorate the honor.

“I am very pleased that our state now boasts two new state craft centers to help promote our highquality crafts,” Douglas told the guests that gathered for the ceremony.

“There are many wonderful things about Vermont and one of them is great communication,” Jamison also stated.

“Through the designation application process, members of the Standard's Committee were not only immediately responsive to

questions, but also provided an interested, listening ear.

“Being able to connect in that way enables small local groups to continue making a difference. With this designation VAULT hopes to extend our vitality into the larger community while maintaining the high standards that helped us achieve this honor.”

VAULT and Artisans Hand now join Burlington's Frog Hollow Craft Center as the only designated craft centers in Vermont, since the process being initiated by thenGov. Howard Dean along with the Vermont Arts Council.

“For over a year, we've been working with members of the craft community to develop the new process and standards for official state approval,” State Chief Marketing Officer Christine Werneke said in a recent interview.

“These were representatives chosen by the craft community, so it has been a very inclusive process.”

One of the main goals of this distinct designation is to ensure that when consumers see the “state craft center” emblem, they are confident in knowing that they are visiting a quality gallery or establishment that values excellence and craftsmanship.

Robert John Courchesne January 3, 1925 – November 30, 2009 After a courageous battle with cancer, Robert John Courchesne passed away peacefully at his home with his family around him.

He was born in Springfield. and graduated from Springfield High School/COOP in 1943.

In high school, he participated in the athletic programs and his senior year was elected to the Vermont all state football team with fellow classmate and great friend Bernard Kasporavich.

In 1943, Bob joined the Navy and served as a motor machinist mate, first class in the Pacific during WWII. During his tour of duty he was part of the initial landing of Okinawa and received two engagement starts on Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon.

After returning home, Bob met his wife of 62 years, Beverly Kelley of Springfield and they were married on January 25, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield.

Bob worked at J&L, Fellows and retired from Lovejoy in 1990. Bob was an avid machinist. He owned and operated Swiss Machine Co. since 1951, as a part time business. After retiring, Bob worked daily in his shop up until a month prior his passing and was a true prodigy of the machine tool industry.

Bob was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of V.F.W. Post 771 in Springfield.

Bob was one of five children born to the late Alfred and Victoria (Page) Courchesne of Springfield, formerly of Sherbrook, Canada. Bob will forever be remembered by his children Paul Courchesne of Venice, FL, Philip Courchesne of Winter Springs, FL, Carmel (Courchesne) Blanchard of Weathersfield, Andrew Courchesne of Springfield, Dana Courchesne of Springfield, and Melissa (Courchesne) Rumrill of Springfield, and several treasured grandchildren, along with countless other friends and family.

Frederick E. Patria April 2, 1934 - November 13, 2009 Frederick E. Patria 75, died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Hudson, FL on Friday, November 13, 2009.

He was born April 2, 1934 in Troy, NH the son of Everett and Marguerite (Bigelow) Patria. He attended Keene Schools and graduated from Keene High School where he played football.

He joined the United States Navy and served honorably from 1952 to 1957.

Mr. Patria was married to Joan Story on April 26, 1958 in West Swanzey, NH. She predeceased him on April 5, 2008.

He was owner of The Red House Press Inc. in Springfield, and moved the business to North Springfield in 1979. He also owned and operated the Springfield Copy Center on Main Street until his retirement in 2001. The Patrias moved to Hudson, FL shortly after his retirement.

Mr. Patria was one of the original founders of the Green Mountain Softball League and The Springfield Hockey Club. He was a member of the Springfield Elks Club B.P.O.E. # 1560, an avid fisherman and golfer. He very much enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his three sons, Daniel Patria and his wife Mary of Charlestown, NH, Michael Patria and his wife Lori of Glen Rock, PA, and Joel Patria and his wife Estela of Zephyrhills, FL. One brother Robert Patria of Keene, NH, two sisters Shirley Anderson of Keene, NH and Barbara Morse of Warner, NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristin Patria, Cameron Patria, Nicholas Patria, Megan King, Scott Patria, Jennifer Patria, Robert Quigg, Jason Quigg, Ryan Quigg, and Allison Quigg.

Regional Food Drive Was Again, A Great Success Thank you to all who helped to make the Regional Food Drive a success again this year. The food drive was a collaborative effort of the Springfield Area Parent Child Center and River Valley Technical Center.

Michelle Lowe of Learning Partners Child Center, a program of the SAPCC, both incited and coordinated the food drive effort for the 2008-2009 holiday season.

“I saw the affect the economic times were having on both individuals and families,” shared Lowe.

“Food drives not only help those in need, but they also empower individuals by allowing everyone to contribute at the level they are able to. Whether a donation consists of one can of food or 20 cans, a hungry stomach is being fed.”

“We had to do this again this year, because there are a great deal of hungry tummies in our communities. Any one of us can help make a difference and why not start today with what we can,” continued Lowe.

For the children of Learning Partners Child Center and Playworks Child Center, both programs of the SAPCC, this event was both an educational and fun way to help stop hunger in our communities. Many families donated non-perishable food items. With the guidance of the Human Service students, a program of the RVTC, the children are sorting the collected goods. All goods collected during the Regional Food Drive will be delivered to area food shelves in the southern Windsor and northern Windham counties.

The SAPCC is a free and elective community resource building strong communities, one family at a time. The center offers services to educate and support young children and their families.

Thomas N. Fogg September 19, 1967 - November 13, 2009 Thomas N. Fogg, 42, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, November 13, 2009.

He was born September 19, 1967 in Hanover, NH the son of Raymond and Susan ( Nelson ) Fogg. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School class of 1986.

Tom was married to Michelle Charland on June 25, 1994.

He was employed at Rockingham Transportation for several years, MacIntyre Fuels in Rockingham for 12 years, and most recently with Carroll Concrete in Charlestown, NH and Riverside Reload in Bellows Falls.

He was an avid Nascar fan and a loving son, husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs. He enjoyed music, playing guitar, and snowmobiling. He was a member of the Springfield Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 1560.

Donna L. Powers April 22, 1956 - November 9, 2009 Donna L. Powers 53, formerly of Hartford, CT died unexpectedly Monday, November 9, 2009 at her home in Weathersfield, VT. She was born April 22, 1956 in Hartford, CT the daughter of Donald and Olive (Sweet) Powers. She attended schools in Connecticut and graduated from Northwest Catholic High School. She later graduated from Moorpark College in California.

She was employed at Santa’s Land in Putney for many years, and most recently had been employed with Lincoln Street in Springfield.

Donna loved her family and her animals.

She is survived by her daughter Kelly PowersDumont of Weathersfield, her mother Olive Powers of Old Lyme, CT, one sister Betsy Ayotte and her husband Ray of Glastonbury, CT, one niece Shannon Ayotte and one

Chester Rec Department Helps Get You Fit This Winter Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Photos by Pam Nelligan The Chester Recreation Department wants to “help get you fit this winter, offering some free fitness opportunities during the winter months, including the use of the

newly updated Green Mountain Union High School weight room, as well as yoga classes to be held in the GMUHS library.

These opportunities are now available to residents of Chester, Andover and Cavendish, and the programs are for

adults only, ages 18 to senior.

Weight room instructors Steve Nelligan, Scott Renfro and Bill Cole will be available at various times throughout the week to help participants create work out routines for people of all fitness levels.

The various equipment available at the gym includes both universal machines and free weights, multiple tread mills and elliptical machines, also resistance bands and balance balls.

Also available will be a “drop in” class of Vinyasa (flow) yoga led

by Roberta O'Donnell beginning December 16.

Yoga increases strength, stamina and balance, while also calming the mind.

Downstreet Cafe Now Open in Bellows Falls

Story and Photos by Robert F. Smith – Editor Jenny Strecker and Ana Porteur have just opened the doors to a new restaurant in Bellows Falls, the Downstreet Cafe in the Exner Block on Canal Street, just off The Square.

The women are no strangers to running a restaurant. Strecker owned and operated the Jamaica Coffee House in Jamaica from 1999 to 2006, and Porteur was the chef at Our Place Drop In Center in Bellows Falls and also is a partner with Corey Walker in Guerrilla

The two have been discussing and working on opening the cafe for about a year, and everything fell into place for a December 1 opening.

“I’ve been looking for a creative job,” Strecker said.

“I was a tour manager for a band, but when that ended I wanted something that didn’t involve a lot of travel.”

Senior Greg Jacobs of Bellows Falls received the E.K. Hall Award, going to the member of the varsity football team who has contributed most to the spirit and good name of the team. Freshman Connor Brown, also of Bellows Falls, received the John H. Lucy Award in honor of his dedication, spirit and perseverance.

Senior Logan Szidik of Weathersfield received the Ole Petter Worsoe Award, going to a member of the boy’s varsity soccer team who through leadership, sportsmanship and competitiveness has contributed the most to the spirit and

success of the team.

Seniors Adam Harrison of Brattleboro and Ted Coneeny of Walpole shared the Angus Black Award, presented to the member of the cross country squad who has made the most outstanding contribution to the success of the team.

Sophomore Andrea Dunkle of Tunbridge was the team’s Most Valuable Female runner.

Freshman Colleen Donahue of Keene received the Most Improved Rider Award for the equestrian team and sophomore Jessica Osceloa of Springfield was honored for her contribution to the Outdoor Challenge team.

The cafe will be open everyday except Wednesday, with general hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Sunday, when they are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Strecker said they will have a Grand Opening on Friday, Dec. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. with entertainment by her father, Bill Strecker, a rhythm and blues musician.

The Walpole Unitarian Church will hold its annual Holiday Bake Sale on Saturday, Dec. 12, next to the post office in Walpole from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

There will be a wide variety of cookies, cakes, and other baked goods, as well as some Fair Trade items, such as the church’s sturdy, canvas grocery bags, and its popular cookbook.

A special addition this year will be

Grape Sourdough Starter, made from the last of the season Frontenac grapes from the vines at Barnett Hill Vineyard. Recipes will be available for a simple sourdough baguette as well as a sourdough loaf made in a modern bread machine.

Bellows Falls Woman’s Club News The Nov. 10 meeting of the Bellows Falls Woman’s Club featured its annual Library Day when, head librarian of the Rockingham Free Public Library, Celina Houlne, and Program Services librarian, Wendy O’Connell, presented a power point program on the history of the building.

The need for significant repairs on the building as it enters its second century of service to the community was noted.

Wendy spoke of recent programs and the themes of the programming schedule. Club members shared reflections and memories of using the services of the library. They were encouraged to join the Friends of the Library group.

Club members have signed up to provide a holiday gift for each resident and the staff of McGirr ’s Nursing Home.

Other holiday activities in which the club is involved include providing cookies for the community Christmas party and attending the holiday luncheon and concert at Kurn Hattin Homes.

Also, club members have traditionally assisted at Central School’s holiday shopping mall. This year ’s event will take place on Dec. 18.

The next meeting of the club will be held on Dec. 8, beginning at 1:30 p.m., at the United Church on School Street. The Bellows Falls Middle School chorus will entertain the members.

The winning tickets of the gas card raffle to benefit the club’s scholarship fund will be drawn at the meeting.

Rockingham Texas Hold’em Tournament

Rotary Helps Our Place Drop-In Center The Bellows Falls Rotary Club has made a grant of $890 to Our Place Drop-in Center to purchase food for meals and the food shelf.

The grant was awarded to the club by Rotary District 7870, which is made up of 59 clubs in Vermont and New Hampshire.

“This is part of Rotary’s mission of working locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger,” said Doreen Aldrich, the club’s president. “We are inspired by the great work being done at Our Place in this time of increasing need.”

The funds will be used to help the center meet the needs of families in Athens, Grafton, Rockingham and Westminster in Vermont, and Walpole and North Walpole in New Hampshire.

“We served 5,136 meals and provided for 1,030 families who accessed the food shelf during the year ending September 30,” said Susan Shea, Our Place director. “We’ve seen the need grow by about 25 percent between this year and last.”

The Hit or Miss Club in Rockingham, will host a Texas Hold’em poker tournament Friday, Dec. 11.

Buy-in is $80 with no rebuy - 75 percent minimum payout to players. Registration/open poker is 5 to 6 p.m.

Players start with 6000 chips, register before 3 p.m. on Friday, December 11 and get 2000 bonus chips.

Chips Lindenmeyr Discusses European Ski Excursion Chips Lindenmeyr, President of New York’s Lindenmeyr Travel, Ltd. will be on hand at the Southern Vermont Arts Center at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 12 to discuss SVAC’s March 2010 culture/skiing excursion to Zurich, Switzerland and Lech, Austria.

The presentation will be held in Gallery I of Yester House Gallery, and complimentary wine and cheese will be served.

A familiar name to many local skiing enthusiasts, Lindenmeyr has been creating “once-in-alifetime” European skiing vacations for 23 years.

A life-long skier herself, Lindenmeyr will share with potential and confirmed tour members her extensive firsthand knowledge – she visits the region four to five times a year and has so far sampled 35 Austrian, French, Italian, and Swiss resorts – of the various

villages, cities, hotels, resorts and ski areas that are on SVAC’s itinerary.

The 10-day excursion takes place March 5 through March 15. The skiing portion of the trip, March 7 through March 12, concentrates on the worldrenowned Arlberg ski area.

Mind Dancing Under the Disco Ball: Random Musings on Popular Culture by

Robert F. Smith – Editor (As the self-proclaimed coolest newspaper office in New England, The Outlook has its own working disco ball, an icon to truly inspire random, deep thought, for sure. Thus, the title.)

So Much Great Music, So Little Time!

I have to laugh when I hear people lamenting the sorry shape of modern music. Usually they are referring to the condition of Top 40 pop or country radio.

My feeling is quite the opposite. I think we’re probably in a golden age of great music and creativity, with more really good music available and more easily accessible than at any time in human history. It is easier than ever for creative musicians to get their music recorded.

In fact, there are a lot of musicians with little recording studios set up in a spare room, basement or barn that can rival the major studios of the early 1960s, and there are a half dozen excellent professional studios tucked away in the woods within a half hour or so of our office here in Bellows Falls.

You’re going to have to do a little digging to find it, but there an incredible amount of great music being recorded now - it’s just that most of it is not being done by the major labels.

This was brought to my attention with the latest issue of Paste magazine, which had several Best of the Decade lists, including Best CD. I knew most of the movies listed, and all of the television programs, but at the very top of the list for best CDs was a name new to me, Sufjan Stevens, and his CD Illinois. I was familiar with a number of the names on the top 25 CD list, including offerings by some personal favorites like Ryan Adams, The Shins, Beck, Amy Winehouse, Rufus Wainwright, Josh Ritter, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, The White Stripes, Radiohead and Wilco, but not to have heard of the list topper was personally a bit jarring.

Well, I’ve heard of him now, and if you’re interested, you might start by listening to his provocative “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.” Yes, as in the serial killer. A remarkable song.

One of the great pleasures in life is discovering new music, and there has never been a better time for that than right now.

Cliff Eberhardt in Concert at Boccelli’s Story by Dorothy Read Get ready to be swept away by popular singer/songwriter Cliff Eberhardt, who will offer his Americana blues and soulful roadhouse ballads at Boccelli’s on the Canal in Bellows Falls on Saturday, Dec. 12, presented by Vermont Festivals LLC. Eberhardt will feature songs from his recent album release “500 Miles: The Blue Rock Sessions,” which merges his own powerful wide range of intimate originals with a fresh take on the Hedy West classic “500 Miles” lending its name to the title.

“This is by far Cliff ’s finest recording to date, moving and deeply personal, and we are excited to be able to present him here in Bellows Falls,” Vermont Festivals Producer Ray Massucco said, “The new material is soulful and reflective and will touch you with its honest sincerity. You won’t want to miss this one.”

This new album follows Eberhardt’s extremely successful “The High Above and the Down Below” which represented a personal and artistic renaissance after a hiatus in his recording following a devastating automobile accident a few years earlier.

With the new work, Eberhardt takes us on a journey that ends with a poignant reworking of his 1990 hit “The Long Road.” Featuring Texas singer Karen Mal on harmony vocals, this new version is made richer with the insight that age brings, changing as he has, over time.

Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country, Cliff recorded the 12 tracks to 500 Miles at the legendary Blue Rock Studio with some of Austin’s hottest players, including guitarist Mike Hardwick, bassist Glenn Fukunaga, drummer Rick Richards, the Band of Heathens’ Colin Brooks, and famed accordion player Joel Guzman.

Guitarist John Stowell Offers Improv Clinic On Sunday, Dec. 13 internationally renowned guitarist John Stowell will give a clinic on jazz improvisation at the Open Music Collective in Brattleboro.

A variety of approaches to improvisation will be addressed, including the use of triads as a source for new melodic material, and how to use the harmonic and melodic minor scales to develop a personal sound and an individual approach to improvisation.

The clinic is open to guitarists at any level, as well as anyone on any instrument who seeks to expand their understanding of improvised music. The clinic will be followed by a performance with guitarist Draa Hobbs, with Jamie Macdonald on acoustic bass.

John Stowell is an award winning guitarist who has performed around the world.

The workshop begins at noon with a concert to follow at 4 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults and $30 for students for the combined workshop and concert.

Anonymous Nonsense is Theater for All Ages at Chapel Gallery in Bellows Falls On Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 & 4 p.m., Stone Church Arts and the Bluebird Theater will present the marionette show “Anonymous Nonsense” in the Chapel Gallery at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church St., Bellows Falls.

This special theater event is for all ages and based on anonymous nonsense poetry put to music by Donald Saaf and performed by the Zanes/Saaf family.

The Bluebird Theater began by working out of the home of Donald Saaf and Julia Zanes and their children Isak and Ole. However, they have more recently taken the Bluebird Theater on the road to local venues and participated in various fundraisers.

With the help of their Friends Finn Campman and Helen Schmidt and their children Maeve and Tula, their work with marionettes is becoming well known in the local region.

The music for all of their shows has been provided

by The Little Hope String Band, which features Matt Scharff on the Bass, as well as Donald and Finn.

Donald and Julia created the theater, puppets and

(mostly) original score. Donald Saaf lives in Saxton’s River and works as an artist, children’s book illustrator, musician, and sometimes teacher. He has shown his work widely throughout New England. His wife Julia is also an artist who has shown throughout New England, as well as in Canada, New Orleans, and Chicago. She teaches community classes regularly to adults and children through the Great River Arts Institute in Bellows Falls, Vermont. They currently have an art exhibit on display in the Chapel Gallery featuring work depicting imaginary gardens and village life.

Finn Campman has a background with Sandglass Theater and works as a teacher and puppeteer, his wife Helen is an artist and art teacher. They are all proud to have the help of their children in this production.

All of the Stone Church Arts events are held at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church St., Bellows Falls, Vermont. Admission is $5 for all ages in advance years of age and $7 at the door.

SVAC To Feature Patti Zeigler Evidence of the Southern Vermont Arts Center ’s intention to exhibit and market the works of member artists and to present the finest quality exhibitions possible are prominently displayed in the December Exhibitions, featuring longtime SVAC Artist Member, Patti Zeigler.

A graduate of the Parson’s School of Design, Patti Zeigler is an accomplished intimist painter who utilizes everyday objects to create colorful realistic still life paintings.

“I strive to paint the essential beauty inherent in every object as honestly as possible while enjoying the challenge of making a three dimensional object look realistic with a two dimensional medium,” Zeigler explains.

“Brushstrokes, shadow, space and design are the critical elements used to capture the form of an object and express it in terms of paint.”

In addition to Zeigler, the December Exhibitions feature paintings by Brian Sweetland, Leslie Peck, Kathleen Domenicucci, Sandra Noble and Steven Forrest, mixed media from Jessie Pollock, drawings by Mark Heitzman, pastels from Phoebe Stone and the sculpture of Robert O. Local Hoops Action Okay folks, the local high school basketball season is underway and in full swing, so let's get to it!

The Leland & Gray boys' hoop squad got their season rolling early, knocking off rival Green Mountain, 69-28, in the opening-round of the season-opening tournament in Arlington.

Noah Chapin and Colin Nystron led the way for the Rebels with 14 points each, while Tyler Russell and Jake Huston pitched in with 10 and 9 points respectively.

--------------------------However, to Green Mountain’s credit, they bounced right back in the consolation game of the tournament, knocking off host Arlington, 67-65, in

an overtime thriller.

After Arlington made a late comeback in regulation and in the waning seconds of overtime, the Chiefs’ Justin Veysey got a big offensive rebound and put-back for the winning basket.

Veysey led all Green Mountain scorers with 17 points, while Ian Currie and Jason Albert pitched in with 13 points each.

Ryan McNally added 9 points for the Chiefs and Kolby Crofut led the way for Arlington with 22 points.

---------------------------In Manchester, the Burr & Burton boys' hoop team began their season in full-stride, knocking off Otter Valley, 56-35, in the opening round of the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Tip-Off Tournament in Rutland.

Bulldog senior Chris Antonez led all scorers with 21 points, including a whopping 19 points in the first half to keep his team in the game nearly single-handedly.

Antonez also hit five 3pointers, while Joseph Keefe also pitched in with 10 points.

The key to the game for Burr & Burton was their ability to hit the three, knocking down eight

treys on the night.

-------------------------The Springfield High School boys' basketball team lost a tough one in their season-opener at Woodstock, dropping a tight, 49-43 decision to the Wasps.

Brandon Boyle led the way for the Cosmos with 13 points, while Billy Wheeler pitched in with 12 points.

Woodstock senior Colin Hagenbarth, who did not play his junior year, led the Wasps with 12 points, but his defensive play against Boyle might have been the difference in the game.

Luke Hanson also pitched in with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Wasps.

Celtics Are On A Roll As the Boston Celtics appear to be hitting their stride during a recent, (at press time) season-high eight game winning streak, including four on the road I might add, the focus of the team's success continues to revolve around the health and play of the “Big Three,”Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

However, another Celtic starter (not named

Rajan Rondo) who is quietly emerging into a tough player on both ends of the floor is 7-year center Kendrick Perkins.

After being drafted by the Celtics right out of high school in 2004, a very young “Perk” (19 years old) entered the league as a very strong but raw player, a pretty good rebounder but not much of an offensive player or defender in the paint.

However, each year Perk has improved upon all aspects in his game, rebounding, scoring in the paint and most importantly, his defense.

Mr. Perkins has now developed into one of the best low post defenders and shot blockers in the league, already producing four blocks in a game four times this year.

On top of this, Perkins is now beginning to develop a pretty good offensive game in the post, having now worked with "big man" guru and former NBA player Clifford Ray for several years to improve his inside game.

For a player who was once just big and strong, is now averaging a double-figures in points

and rebounds, is in the top ten in the league in blocked shots and already has a championship ring in pocket.

Not bad for a big, slow high school kid from Beaumont, Texas.

Patiots Fall Again After getting blasted two weeks ago on Monday Night Football to the high-flying New Orleans Saints, the Patriots were looking to bounce back on the road, traveling to Miami to take on the division rival Dolphins.

After going up by two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 58yard touchdown pass to Randy Moss, Miami fought an up hill battle the rest of the way, pulling out a dramatic home win on a 41-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter with one minute left on the clock.

The loss leaves the Patriots one game ahead of Miami and the Jets, heading into this week.

Red Sox Nation News In Red Sox Nation news, the Sox have settled on yet another shortstop with the signing former Blue Jay Marco Scutaro to a twoyear deal.

The 34-year old

Scutaro now takes the place of Alex Gonzalez who of course, just signed with the Blue Jays.

To this sports editor, the move is yet another head-scratcher from Theo Epstein in the Sox’ revolving door of shortstops since the departure of Nomar Garciapara in 2004.

Orlando Cabrera, Edgar Rentaria, Julio Lugo and Alex Gonxalez twice.

Am I forgetting any one? Well, you could throw Jed Lowerie and Nick Green in their too, and not one of these guys was worth keeping for more than a song?

Theo should have signed Cabrera to a long term deal after he helped the Sox win the World Series in 2004, and they should have been more patient with Renteria and given him one more year to settle into Boston.

However, this is not the answer either, and the revolving door will not slow down anytime soon.

Even though he got a two year deal, Scutaro is just another stop-gap. A pretty good 34-year-old player coming off his career year is not a longterm answer.

Black River Tournament Kicks Off Hoop Season

Green Mountain Girls Bring Home Two Wins Story and photo by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor At the recent, Black River girls' basketball invitational tournament in Ludlow, Green Mountain, Proctor, Rochester and the host Lady Presidents all took part in a season-opening, two-round tournament.

In the opening round, GM got 16 points from sophomore McKala Benson, 14 points and 10 rebounds from Julie Comstock, a junior transfer from Vermont Academy, and eight points and 10 boards from Emma Listle in a 4535 win over Rochester.

Senior point guard Sara Groshens also pitched in with nine steals in the 10point Lady Chiefs win, while Miranda Shepard led the Lady Rockets with 13 points and Bennett McPhetres pitched in with 10 points.

-------------------------In the second game of the opening round, the host Lady Presidents took on a tough Proctor team, falling 57-22 to the Lady Phantoms.

Proctor ran up a 27point halftime lead over Black River and never looked back.

Mikayla Tanner led the way for the Phantoms with 14 points, while

Carissa Elrick and Megan Carter pitched in with 10 points each. Kaitelynd Palmer led the way for the Lady Presidents with 8 points.

------------------------In the championship game the following night featuring Proctor and Green Mountain, the Lady Chiefs jumped out to a quick lead early while utilizing a stifling, sometimes-full court, sometimes-three-quarter court trapping defense that produced a lot of turnovers and easy baskets for the Lady Chiefs.

“Our pressing defense starts with Sara's (Groshens) pressure on the ball,” GM coach Terry Farrell said after the game.

“She creates a lot of pressure on the in bounds passes, then Emma (Lisle) and Julie (Comstock) step into passing lanes and create problems.”

In the half court set, a tough, 2-2-1 zone defense smothered Proctor's ability to drive to the basket, forcing a lot of contested jump shots.

And when they did penetrate the defense, Lisle was looming under the basket, producing

multiple blocked shots on the night.

Green Mountain was also feeling it early and often on the offensive end, passing the ball well around the parameter, while also effectively posting up Lisle in the post, who worked for baskets inside, while also getting to the free throw line.

The Lady Chiefs took a 31-8 lead into the half, with Benson and Lisle each scoring eight points, while Groshens pitched in with four points and a couple of assists.

The second half would be much of the same, as the Green Mountain continued to dominate on both ends of the floor, also allowing coach Farrell to get a lot of playing time for everyone, as the game wound down and the tournament title was won.

Senior Listle led the way for the Lady Chiefs, filling up the stat sheet with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and four blocks.
