newmarketpress@denpubs.com RUTLAND Ñ With Pico Mountain set to open itsÕ 75th season on Dec. 17, the Killington resort recently announced that it will contribute $20 to the United Way of Rutland County from each Pico Express Card sold on opening day. The Express Cards, which offer $29 mid-week (non-peak) tickets and $39 weekend and peak day rates, cost $39 and everyone who purchases one can ski for free on opening day. Ò WeÕ re very excited to open a day earlier than expected and offer our guests a free day of skiing, and a great deal on the Express Card, while supporting a great community cause,Ó said Tracy Taylor, Pico MountainÕ s director of operations. According to Chuck Sharp, Director of RutlandÕ s United Way, the money generated through the Pico event will go directly towards the United WayÕ s 2010 funding goal of $560,000. The United way is a nonprofit organization that aids local families and children. Ò This partnership has been going on for several years now, thanks to the generosity of the great folks at Pico,Ó Chuck Sharp said in a recent interview. Ò Tom Horrocks is the Director of Marketing at Pico and has been a great friend of the United Way. Following its annual tradition, members of the Ludlow Garden Club decorated the Christmas tree that graces the entrance lobby to Fletcher Memorial Library in Ludlow. A major assistance to the Garden Club members was the presence of Angelo Centini who was able to string the lights on the tall tree. Barbara Whittaker of the Garden Club coordinated the acquisition of the tree and its decoration. newmarketpress@denpubs.com KILLINGTON Ñ From Thursday, Dec. 9 through Saturday, Dec. 12, The Snowshed Base Lodge will host this seasonÕ s Killington Vermont Holiday Festival, including The Festival of Trees, which features more than 100 Ò themedÓ Christmas trees decorated by local businesses. Other events include horse-drawn sleigh rides, live music and entertainment and a SantaÕ s Workshop - a satellite workshop of the North Pole, allowing children to Ò help Santa build toys.Ó The festival kicks off at 4 p.m. on Thursday with admission charge of only $5. Per person, with children under five entering free. Music and entertainment will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m., with any appreciated donations going to the Killington Music Festival. Some of the music includes the chorusÕ from Shelburne and Bridgewater Elementary Schools, as well as the Rutland Town Band. The Jack Frost Marketplace is open for Christmas shoppers from the festival opening until 9 p.m., horse-drawn sleigh rides available from 5 to 8 p.m., and free hot chocolate available at the tree festival from 4 to 9 p.m. The Santa Workshop runs every hour from 4 to 8 p.m., with a $10 charge per child including choice of craft. ...Turn to page 12 to read more on the Holiday Fest

Root Cellar, My previous book was a cookbook that followed the gardening season,Ó Chesman said in a recent interview. “And when I finished the fall/winter season and had enough recipes to complete the book, I realized I still had lots of ideas for all the winter vegetables - the hearty greens, root vegetables, potatoes and winter squash. So I decided to write another cookbook just focusing on those vegetables.Ó Andrea has mostly featured vegetable recipes in her cookbooks, although her previous collaboration with author Fran Raboff featured desserts titled 250 Country Desserts, which was an update and expanded version of MomÕ s Best Desserts.
