Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith –≠Editor A couple of weeks ago, we ran a letter from Ruth Mezzetti in Alstead, NH about her kayak being stolen. It was a sad event, but she treated it with grace and humor. In the letter she reminded the thief that she still had the matching paddle if they wanted it – but to call first if they were coming to get it!

Well, since then a few things have happened that have restored Ruth’s trust in humanity. We thought that Thanksgiving Week was the ideal time to highlight her story. Because, while there are some thieves and bad people out there preying on the innocent, most of us realize that the majority of folks are decent and kind and just want to be treated fairly.

This is a good time of year to be thankful for human kindness and generosity, so for the rest of Ruth’s story, turn to page 5.

Halladays Celebrates With Open House crackers desserts.

These and other refreshments will be served throughout the weekend. All 70 Harvest Barn mixes are mixed and packaged at the old location on the hill, employing several local workers.They are all natural and make great holiday gift.

Halladay’s has to be one of the more unique flower and gift shops in the area with the newly opened wine and cheese department. They are featuring many local ciders and wines as well as more traditional selections. Wines are priced from $5.99 and up with most bottles being under $15.

They will be featuring a wine and cheese tasting party December 12 and 13 with other dates to be announced.

“We hope you can all stop by to say hello during the Open House,” said Govotski.

“Take home a free flower and enjoy some yummy refreshments.

Shop locally this season and keep our beautiful downtown thriving.”

Smith Halladays Harvest Barn and Flowers on The Square in Bellows Falls always has one of the most attractive displays in its windows, and often, weather permitting, in front of the store as well. Having just decorated for the holiday season this past weekend, the store is especially beautiful now.

That is partly because Halladays will be celebrating their first anniversary at their new location on the Square with a festive open house on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 30.

Owner Kathleen Govotski said, “Halladays would like to thank area residents for their business and overwhelming support in Halladays’ new location.

In this tough economy we have appreciated every purchase large and small, which has made our first year such a success.“ Halladays will be presenting free roses to the first 100 customers and door prizes including free flowers each month for one year to one winner.

Several raffles, including a hand-made 82x90 quilt, hand-embroidered tablecloth and ceramic Christmas tree, will be drawn at the Bazaar. Tickets for the raffles are available now at the Center.

The quilt may also be viewed at the Village Square Booksellers. Tickets for the quilt raffle will be available at the bookstore while it is on display there.

The Center is handicap accessible, has a new lift for access to the second floor and ample parking is available.

Harlem Rockets to Thrill Fans at BFUHS The Harlem Rockets will be coming to Bellows Falls Union High School on Monday, November 30 at 6:30 p.m. to play against a community team of teachers and principals,

policemen and others.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for kids in advance ($2 more at the door).

Kurn Hattin Homes Children Honor Veterans Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Photo courtesy of Kurn Hatin Homes Under the direction of their social studies teacher Richard Long, the children of Kurn Hattin Homes recently honored Veteran's Day with an annual, special program.

Some of the activities on this unique occasion included the Kurn Hattin Cub Scouts #401 leading the audience in the Pledge Of Allegiance, before student council President Dylan Bussino read a letter from President Obama.

Before the event, the local Brownies visited the local Westminster cemetery and collected all the old flags from the gravesites, then presented the flags for an official retirement ceremony at the program.

In a special addition this year, each Veteran was also presented a star with their name on it, in honor of their faithful service to their country.

The Lighting Of Candles was another special presentation, which remembers the fallen Vermont soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bellows Falls VFW Veteran Doug MacPhee lit 33 candles during the reading of each soldier's name, before a moment of silence.

A rendition of Taps was then played before five students read their VFW essays with the theme, When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heroes?

The event closed out with the Kurn Hattin Select Band (with directors Lisa Bianconi and Matt Hunter) and other music program volunteers (Chris Goding, Janet Lewis and Father Lance Harlow) performing the Green

Mountain Song and God Bless America, led by student Aaliyah OlmaGilmore.

After the Retirement of Colors, all guests were treated to a luncheon at Watson Hall to finish a wonderful event and ongoing tradition.

Woodworking Workshop at RFPL

Come to the Rockingham Free Public Library for a unique Woodworking Workshop with Chris Fitch on Saturday, December 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Chris Fitch, of Windham Center, will offer this hands-on workshop in which participants will learn much about Colonial-era woodworking by actually working on an object which they will be able to take with them.

Fitch will demonstrate Colonial techniques, including bench work, use of tools, and basic joint work (mortise & tenon, dovetail).

Chris Fitch worked for years at Old Fort #4, where he combined his love of history, storytelling and craftsman-

ship, while demonstrating his Early American woodworking skills—in full Colonial costume. Fitch is, indeed, a working craftsman: a fine woodworker and cabinet maker who follows the traditional methods and techniques of Vermont’s early settlers.

He has been hewing, sawing and shaping

Gov. Lynch Dedicates New Bridge

Scott Morgan at Walpole Artisans The Walpole Artisans, Inc. is proud to present an exhibition by fine artist Scott J. Morgan as their first featured artist since their grand reopening. His unique oils on canvas explore the realm of "abstract expressionism" and often evoke the look of stained glass.

Our Place Drop-In Center Food Drive Our Place Drop-in Center will hold two food drives at Shaw’s supermarket in Walpole, NH, as part of the Project Feed the Thousands campaign.

Members of the board and other volunteers will be on hand Wednesday, November 25 and Saturday, December 19 from noon to 6 p.m. to accept donations of foodstuffs and personal care products from shoppers.

Durand Toyota/Ford is supplying a pickup truck at the site for donors to fill with their contributions.

Cash donations will also be accepted.

Young people from the Bellows Falls Boys and Girls Club will help hand out collection bags to shoppers at the November 25 drive.

Suggested donations are frozen fruits and vegetables; garlic, onions, winter squash and other produce that can be stored; canned meats such as chicken and tuna; 100 percent fruit juice; spaghetti sauce, beans, peanut butter, jelly, healthy macaroni and cheese; powdered milk; and personal care products such as toilet paper, soap, shampoo, conditioner, razors, tampons and diapers.

Gov. John Lynch and Sen. Bob Odell (Dist.#8) dedicated the Alstead, NH bridge on November 11 along with other dignitaries.

This was the bridge that was washed out in the deadly Alstead to Walpole Flood of 2005. The new bridge was dedicated as the Alstead Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Veterans from as far back as World War II attended the dedication, along with service groups that included the VFW, American Legion, Fall Mountain Jr. ROTC, Boy Scouts and nearly 300 supporters and

State Auditor Tom Salmon, CPA, said he has launched a survey of the 62 school supervisory unions in Vermont to determine the full range of shared services among schools that help improve services or instruction and may contain costs.

“Many schools are sharing services of one kind or another, from common bus and food service contracts, to computer specialists, language teachers or special education staff,” Salmon said, “but no one has a good handle on what everyone is doing. Our survey will help produce an inventory of possibilities,” he said.

“As school boards, administrators, teachers, parents and others build budgets this fall, we can all benefit from more information about what’s working, what’s not, and what is getting in the way of more sharing,” Salmon noted.

“There’s a lot of creativity at work in the school community, and the survey’s goal is to identify new concepts and get them to superintendents, principals and school boards around Vermont to consider,” he noted.

Salmon said he’s had help from the Vermont Superintendents’ Association and the Vermont Department of Education on the project.

“Part of the survey asks administrators to identify obstacles to developing more shared-service agreements that can help students and perhaps reduce costs through economies of scale and the sharing of special expertise.” Salmon said that information might help legislators consider allowing more flexible approaches to school spending.

The Auditor said that the results will be posted on his website next month.

Smith – Editor (Continued from cover) This past week we received a second letter from Ruth Mezzetto, this one much more encouraging: Editor, the Outlook: Recently, when my kayak was stolen, my faith in humanity waned a bit. Then, a call came from one Mr. John Summers.

He told me to go to his store in Keene and pick out a new kayak. Mr. Summers owns Backcountry Outfitters.

I was overcome with thankfulness and happiness. Never for the rest of my life will I ever forget what this wonderful man has done for me.

May God bless you Mr. Summers and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Ruth Mezzetti Alstead, NH Ruth is a medical assistant who moved to New Hampshire from Connecticut when she retired, in order to be near one of her married daughters.

“I wanted to do something outdoors, because I’m very active,” she said. “I found that still water kayaking, once you purchase your equipment, is very inexpensive. I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed it.”

That enjoyment came to an end on October 26 when Ruth went out from her apartment at Papermill Village in Alstead to discover that the kayak was gone.

“I was shocked,” she said. “First I asked why would this happen to me.

Then I got angry.”

When the call came from John Summers, she was overwhelmed.

“I was sobbing and overwhelmed,” she said. “We live here on a limited income and I couldn’t have gone out and bought another. I’d really lost a lot of faith in humanity, but he restored it.”

And he was not the only one who offered to help. Norman Toussaint of Bellows Falls, an avid kayaker, also contacted her.

Shortly after she got her new, bright red kayak, Ruth took it out on the Ashuelot River, then stopped by Summer ’s Backcountry Outfitters.

John Summers was there.

“He had no idea who I was,” she said, “but I grabbed him and hugged him and then took him out and showed him the kayak.”

Ruth mentioned that she’d had some tragedies in life that the serenity of kayaking did a lot to help soothe. With a little more caution in how she stores her new kayak, she said, she’s looking forward to many more hours enjoying the local waters.

One would guess that everytime she enjoys her new gift, she’ll be reminded of how many good people there are in the world.

Parks Place Donation

Recently, Parks Place Community Resource Center in Bellows Falls was the recipient of $1000 from Chittenden Bank. Joanne Sprague and Katie Dearborn of the Bellows Falls branch stopped by to personally give their donation to the Carriage House Building Project fund.

Parks Place has been fundraising to renovate their on-site carriage house which will expand offices and meeting areas to accommodate the ever-increasing need for local health and human service space. Their goal is $100,000 and they are 2/3 of the way there!

Parks Place helps thousands of community members access education, employment training, health programs that enabled them to make positive, lasting changes in their lives.

Successful Centennial Celebration Editor, the Outlook: The Rockingham Free Public Library celebrated its Centennial this past Saturday with a terrific community party. We had a great turn-out, really excellent food, super music, and a successful Raffle and Silent Auction – plus it was lots of fun!

Like all events, it depended on so many generous people giving their time, energy and funds in support of something they care about and hope to see grow and flourish. We would like to thank our trustees and staff for devotion to the cause; every single volunteer who cooked, created, prepared or schlepped; and each person and/or business who donated the fabulous items for the Auction and Raffle. December Hikes with the Nature Museum A short, guided Women’s Hike will take place on Tuesday December 1, from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Village Park, behind the Museum at 186 Townshend Road in Grafton.

Red Cross Offering Holiday Teddy Bears The Green Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering teddy bears as a fund raiser to benefit the work of its local chapters. These teddy bears are being offered by local banks and their branches during the months of November and December.

The “Teddy Bear and Friends” program provide much joy to Red Cross supporters, who love the bear ’s luxurious plush fabric and the knowledge they are helping support the local Red Cross chapter and it’s work.

The bears are being provided by Mary Meyer Stuffed Toys of Townshend. The person searching for just-the-right teddy bear will be very happy, whether they are teddy bear collectors or someone seeking a child-safe stuffed toy.

The Red Cross teddy bears make a great holiday gift, and are available at many local banks and credit unions in southern Vermont.

All proceeds from this project will be used by local Red Cross chapters to supporter Red Cross activities and accomplish their much needed help in times of emergencies.

Bromley Donation to Ronald McDonald House This past summer, some 950 visitors to Bromley’s Sun Mountain Adventure Park arrived bearing money-saving admission coupons picked up at McDonald’s restaurants in Vt, NH, MA and New York.

In addition to the visitors’ discounts, Bromley pledged to donate 50¢ for each coupon redeemed, $475 in total – a 36% increase over last year – to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

“It’s great, really,” says Bromley President, Rich Wiseman. “A win-winwin situation… families got a nice break coming into the park, we enjoyed increased traffic and the Ronald McDonald House Charities got a nice donation.”

Woodburning Tips from the Chimney Safety Institute of America Whether you are heating your home or simply enjoying a crackling fire in your fireplace, choosing the right wood can make a tremendous difference.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America offers the following tips to make your woodburning experience more enjoyable and more efficient: 1. Always check your source. You can never be sure how much wood you are buying when you buy by the truckload. Buying a cord ensures that you will get what you pay for.

A standard cord of firewood is 128 cubic feet of wood, generally measured as a stack 8 feet long by 4 feet tall by 4 feet deep.

2. Buy dry wood. Wellseasoned firewood, with an average moisture content of 20-25 percent, is easier to start, produces

more heat and burns cleaner. An inexpensive handheld moisture meter, available at home improvement stores or local specialty hearth retailers, will allow you to test your own wood. In a pinch, you can simply bang two pieces together.

When two pieces of seasoned wood are banged together, they make a “clunk” sound. When two pieces of green wood are banged together, they make a “thud” sound.

Nevermind the species. It is far more important that the fuel be dry as compared to the species. You don't have to burn only premium hardwoods. Less dense woods like elm and even soft maple are abundant and make fine firewood as long as you're willing to make a few extra trips to the woodpile.

4. Store smart. Wood should be stored off the

ground if possible and protected from excess moisture when weather threatens. Also remember that your woodpile looks like heaven to termites, so it is best to keep only a small amount of wood near the house.

service technician. This reduces the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup or obstructions in the chimneys. Put your mind at ease by asking to see your chimney sweeps certification badge, and rest assured that you are getting the best service.

Peter Saccio to Talk at Brooks Memorial Library

Post Oil Solutions Learning to Feed Ourselves Workshop Series

Dartmouth professor Peter Saccio will look at the education of Shakespeare’s character Hamlet in a talk at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro on December 2. His talk, “Hamlet Contemplates the Bust of Aristotle, or Was the Prince’s Education of Any Use to Him?” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and takes place at 7 p.m.

Amidst Shakespeare’s heroes, we know only where Hamlet studied. In this unique approach to a classic play, Saccio asks what value a college education has for a man whose father dies and whose mother marries an uncle he detests.

Saccio is Leon D. Black Professor of Shakespearean Studies at Dartmouth College. Author of Shakespeare's English Kings: History, Chronicle, and Drama, he is a recipient of the Huntington Award for Outstanding Teaching. His lectures are featured by the Teaching Company.

The Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May, featuring speakers of national and regional renown. Talks are held at Brooks Memorial Library.

Upcoming Brattleboro talks include “Projecting Leadership: Art Used for Political Ends” with Dartmouth art historian Jane Carroll on January 6; “Horses Like Lightning: A Story of a Passage through the Himalayas” with Dartmouth anthropologist Sienna Craig on February 3; and “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” with award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns on March 3.

Windham Housing Trust Receives Grant from TD Charitable Foundation Windham Housing Trust, Inc. (WHT)of Brattleboro, VT has received a $10,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation's annual "Housing for Everyone" grant competition. The funding will be used to support affordable housing initiatives in Windham County, Vermont.

Now in its fifth year, the "Housing for Everyone" grant competition offers housing non-profits a chance to win funds for projects that help to

stabilize the housing environment in communities where TD Bank does business.

Grants ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.

WHT was one of 56 winners selected for funding out of nearly 500 applicants.

“With this “Housing for Everyone” award, TD Bank and Windham Housing Trust are joining forces to help local citizens remain in their homes in these difficult times,” said Connie Snow, Executive Director at WHT. “This

grant support for Windham Housing Trust’s HomeSteady program will mean that our organization can provide timely and essential delinquency and credit repair counseling, foreclosure intervention services, and reverse mortgage counseling to local citizens. Thank you TD Bank!”

WHT’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of low and moderate income citizens; to preserve and revitalize neighborhoods; to foster

diversity; and to improve the social, economic and cultural health of communities of Windham County, Vermont. WHT was a “Housing for Everyone” award winner in 2008 in support of building capacity to develop 36 units of rural housing over three years.

Through the "Housing for Everyone" program, the TD Charitable Foundation donated a total $2 million in 2009, and has invested nearly $5.3 million in affordable housing to date.

Basic Facts for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Discussion Editor, the Outlook: I have been listening to the back and forth about Vermont Yankee and nuclear power in general and want to try and inject some basic facts into the discussion. First let me start by saying for 17 plus years I have worked in the power industry; with 8 of those years being the North East Power Team Leader of GE’s Water and Process Technologies division and I currently work at Vermont Yankee.

In my past I have worked in all aspects and types of power generation (from cradle to grave as they say – from the up front planning, design and permitting work – to the operations of – to the shutting down and decommissioning) and throughout all of that I have learned some very basic facts – not emotional opinions, but factual reality that anyone who desires to can confirm for themselves with a few clicks of the mouse or a trip to your local library.

1) There are 104 commercial nuclear power plants producing 20 percent of all

electricity and over 70 percent of the emission-free electricity generated in the United States. They are located at 64 sites in 31 states.

2) More than 400 nuclear power plants worldwide produce 16 percent of the world’s electricity—while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 2 billion metric tons per year.

3) Nuclear energy has one of the lowest environmental impacts of any electricity source. For example, a wind farm would need 235 square miles to produce the same amount of electricity as a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant located on 1 square mile.

4) Nuclear energy is by far the nation’s largest source of electricity that does not emit any controlled air pollutants, providing 73 percent of the electricity from all carbon-free sources, including hydroelectric, wind and solar.

5) Nuclear power plants provide low-cost, predictable power at stable prices and are essential in maintaining the reliability

of the U.S. electric power system.

6) Nuclear power plants are able to produce abundant and low cost energy because they use an enriched form of uranium for fuel.

One uranium fuel pellet – the size of the tip of your little finger – is equivalent to 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 1,780 pounds of coal, or 149 gallons of oil.

7) You would have to live near a nuclear power plant for over 2,000 years to get the same amount of radiation exposure that you get from a single diagnostic medical x-ray.

8) The concentrated ash from biomass plants (such as those operating throughout New England and yes here in Vermont and even in many of our own home heating system – wood stoves and boilers) has high enough levels of radon to require it to be disposed of as nuclear waste – in the biomass power industry they just mix it with loam to get the levels diluted down to below limits and then sell it to the public for use in a va-

riety of industries.

9) Driving down a dirt road to your home or your favorite fishing spot kicks up more air pollution in that one trip then a Nuclear Power plant emits all year.

10) A recent Gallup Environmental Poll (conducted in March of 2009) found that 59 percent of Americans favor using nuclear energy as one way to provide electricity for the United States.

Since taking office, President Obama has said objective science should be at the heart of some of our most pressing problems. I agree energy usage in the U.S. is projected to increase 1 percent every year, meaning we need to expand our energy solutions not force the loss of safe reliable energy that has been serving the people of Vermont for over 20 years.

Nuclear power is not the end solution to our energy challenges, but there is no solution without nuclear power as a part of it.

Johnson also noted that volunteers who step forward, such as sports fans Suzanne Stern and Angelo Jardina, make a huge difference in the quality and quantity of programming.

Board members Marita Johnson and Steve Sysko were singled out and praised for their many hours of volunteer work in the field.

Directors nominated included Flint, Sysko, Kurt Staudter, Marita Johnson, Julia Lloyd Wright and new members Bill Reed and Bill Kearns.

Flint noted that many SAPA board members have been involved since the station's inception a decade ago. He said it was a good time for some new people to get involved.

Springfield Area Public Access (SAPA) recently marked its 10th year of service to the towns of Springfield, Chester and Weathersfield at its annual meeting on October 22.

Board Chair Bob Flint noted, "It's amazing how many people SAPA touches and how imbedded it is into our lives."

"SAPA is at a really interesting point in time," Flint added. He specifically mentioned ongoing contract negotiations with cable provider Comcast and the station's need for larger quarters.

Flint praised SAPA Director Bruce Johnson, saying, "You have no idea of the hours and dedication he puts in to make this happen."

Director Johnson announced that the station has gotten busier. Original programming for the last year included nearly 500 shows. He also listed equipment upgrades and studio improvements that were completed.

Johnson said that SAPA's ambitious programming has produced growing pains, both in terms of physical space and technical requirements.

The current staff of Jared Gunnell as production manager and Kevin Forrest as programming manager has freed Johnson up to perform more managerial duties, the director said.

Johnson also praised former employees Heather Koledo for her work in creating a web site and Mickee McCrillis for her administrative accomplishments.

The director was especially grateful for those who cover events in the field, including Mark Ostrom, Debbie Ostrom, Chris Rosengrant, Bob Summers, Katelyn Merritt, Wayne LeFevre and Jeff Barcomb.

GM Booster Club And Student Government Team Up With Project Feed The Thousands Story by Joe Milliken - Editor The Green Mountain Union High School Booster Club is teaming up with the GM student government to help promote Project Feed the Thousands.

During November and December students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to help support their local food shelves.

The Booster Club is providing the classes with a monetary incentive for the top three classes who collect the most items.

This year the Booster Club wants to encourage more student participation through awarding individual incentives as well.

Anyone who brings in a non-perishable food item on any given day of the week will have their name entered into a drawing.

Springfield Elks Annual Hoop Shoot The Springfield Elks Lodge #1560 will be holding their annual basketball Hoop Shoot at the Springfield Community Center on Saturday, December 12.

Elk Hoop Shoot chairman, Victor Baskevich announced this week that the shoot will commence with sign ups at 8:30 a.m. with the 8 and 9 years olds shooting first. That will be followed by the 10 &

11 years olds and the 12 & 13 year olds shooting last.

Please note, any boy or girl is age 7 on April 1, 2010, contestant is too young to participate. If the contestant will be age 14 on April 1, 2010, contestant is too old to participate.

A family Advent Event for church and community will be held on Sunday, November 29 at the church (10 Valley Street) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the event there will be a luncheon, songs, games, crafts, a video of the nativity, and a storyteller.

This event is open to

families in the community and the surrounding area.

Springfield Area Adult Day Service Thanks Senior Garden Contributors

Frederick E. Patria 75, died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Hudson, Florida on Friday, November 13, 2009.

He was born April 2, 1934 in Troy, New Hampshire the son of Everett and Marguerite (Bigelow) Patria. He attended Keene Schools and graduated from Keene High School where he played football.

He joined the United States Navy and served honorably from 1952 to 1957.

Mr. Patria was married to Joan Story on April 26, 1958 in West Swanzey, NH. She predeceased him on April 5, 2008.

He was owner of The Red House Press Inc. in Springfield, Vermont and later moved the business to North Springfield, Vermont in 1979. He also owned and operated the Springfield Copy Center on Main Street in Springfield until his retirement in 2001. Mr. and Mrs. Patria moved to Hudson Florida shortly after his retirement.

Mr. Patria was one of the original founders of the Green Mountain Softball League and The Springfield Hockey Club. He was a member of the Springfield Elks Club B.P.O.E. # 1560, an avid fisherman and golfer. He very much enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his 3 sons, Daniel Patria and his wife Mary of Charlestown, NH, Michael Patria and his wife Lori of Glen Rock, PA, and Joel Patria and his wife Estela of Zephyrhills, FL. One brother Robert Patria of Keene, NH, 2 sisters Shirley Anderson of Keene, NH and Barbara Morse of Warner, NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristin Patria, Cameron Patria, Nicholas Patria, Megan King, Scott Patria, Jennifer Patria, Robert Quigg, Jason Quigg, Ryan Quigg, and Allison Quigg.

Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vermont on Sunday November 22, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 23, at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in West Swanzey, New Hampshire.

She was born April 22, 1956 in Hartford, Connecticut the daughter of Donald F. and Olive ( Sweet ) Powers. She attended schools in Connecticut and graduated from Northwest Catholic High School. She later graduated from Moorpark College in California.

She was employed at Santa’s Land in Putney, Vermont for many years, and most recently had been employed with Lincoln Street in Springfield, Vermont.

Donna loved her family and her animals.

She is survived by her daughter Kelly Powers-

Dumont of Weathersfield, her mother Olive Powers of Old Lyme, CT, 1 sister Betsy Ayotte and her husband Ray of Glastonbury, CT, 1 niece Shannon Ayotte and 1 nephew Gregory Ayotte of Glastonbury, CT, and close friend Victoria Owens.

She was predeceased by her father Donald F. Powers.

A memorial mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield, VT. Reverend Peter Williams officiated.

Dan Ray from the Springfield Recycling Center made an informative presentation to Springfield Family Center staff and other building tenants about the expanded list of items that can now be recycled at the Springfield transfer station.

A more comprehensive list of paper items, plastics #1-7 (do not need to be sorted) and several other changes were explained.

Local Artist Profile: Don Hofer Profile by Joe Milliken - Editor photos courtesy of Don Hofer Ludlow resident Don Hofer, who teaches pen & ink, mixed media and painting (acrylic and oil) at Fletcher Farm School for Arts & Crafts also in Ludlow, has worn many hats over the years; fine artist, graphic designer, advertising manager, teacher and even advertising executive.

His art education is extensive, having studied under world renowned artists Ken Davies and Rudolph Zalinger at Paier School of Art & Photography in Hamden, CT. Hofer graduated from

Hamden in 1962, while also studying at Fairfield University (CT) and Southern CT University.

While at Fairfield on a music scholarship, Hofer also spent 10 years training his tenor voice with Maestro Riggio in New Haven, CT. Don also continued his love of fine art with the creation of Hofer Fine Arts in 1965, pursuing art exhibitions and shows all over New England for his pen and ink drawings, portraits and landscape paintings.

While developing a Fortune 500 graphics and advertising resume over the next 20 years with various CT-based companies such as

Sieburg Industries, Wallace Silversmiths and American Chain & Cable Company.

In 1982 Hofer launched Hofer Advertising & Marketing, providing a full service advertising and marketing agency, specializing in the development of magazine ads and trade show design and marketing.

Always drawn to Vermont's natural beauty, Hofer and his wife Joyce moved to Ludlow in 1993, with Don changing the business name of the advertising agency to Graphics Plus, while also continuing to grow as a commissioned fine artist.

“With the varied experience in my past I recognized that the needs of my community were more than rack folders, brochures, logos and other stationery type projects.

“I felt that Graphics Plus would verbally cover more needs such as designing, painting and installing major retail signs. Also producing my various fine art portraits, landscapes, animal pen & ink drawings.

Over the years, Hofer has especially developed a special feel for animals, with the ability to capture their noble qualities with striking detail, most notable through his Fauna Series pen and ink collection.

Don began teaching at Fletcher Farm School in 1994 and found great joy in teaching art to students from many walks of life.

He currently teaches four courses - pen & ink/mixed media, oil painting, acrylic painting and more recently a course in perspective.

“The then director of Fletcher Farm suggested I schedule a class for the coming summer and I really liked the idea. I began with my extensive experience with acrylic painting and later added oil painting. As the years went on we added pen & ink/mixed media to the agenda and more recently, a class on

prospective drawing.

“What I have learned from my teaching experience was what a positive delight it was to see people, who had never experienced serious art training before, produce a picture on canvas that they never even dreamed was possible. I honestly began to enjoy that, even more than producing what I knew I was able to accomplish.”

Mr. Hofer has also been involved in many organizations and clubs throughout New England including (locally) the Chester Art Guild, West River Art Association, the Ludlow Chamber of Commerce

and is currently a Cantor at Annunciation Church in Ludlow.

With Graphics Plus, Don has designed and produced over 40 of Ludlow's business and community signs, is currently working on a book called The Logic Of Logos and has even designed a coin that was produced at the Franklin Mint. Indeed, a man of many hats.

Ring in the Holiday Season With the Vermont Symphony Orchestra – Schedule of Area VSO Events Santa Claus AND the VSO are comin’ to town.

Vermont’s own symphony orchestra will ring in the holiday season this December with two traditional programs in music halls around the state.

The exuberant VSO Holiday Pops concert presents a celebration of the season, “All I Want for Christmas….”

The program is packed with holiday favorites--the Nutcracker, Silver Bells, Greensleeves, Sleigh Ride-plus a medley of Christmas movie music (from Miracle on 34th Street to the Polar Express). Musical stocking stuffers include the popular VSO sing-along, a student composition based on six tiny stories, and some lighthearted observations about the season from VSO musicians. Anthony Princiotti conducts this joyful concert of new holiday favorites and seasonal classics.

Performances are Friday, December 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Barre Opera House; Saturday, December 12, 7:30 p.m. at the Flynn Center in Burlington; and Sunday, December 13, 3 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, Rutland. The Rutland program is the first performance in the VSO’s three-concert Sunday Matinee Series.

For mystical and majestic holiday music, Robert De Cormier returns to lead the VSO Brass Quintet and Counterpoint in a festive combination of works perfect for the holidays.

Brass and voices alternate and join forces for a rich range of holiday repertoire, including traditional carols and Renaissance dances. This classic music of the season is performed in picturesque, intimate settings in four Vermont communities: Thursday, December 17, 7:30 p.m., Warren United Church in

An Old Fashioned Vermont Christmas in Weston An Old Fashioned Vermont Christmas Celebration will occur in the Village of Weston on Saturday, December 5. From 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., villagers and visitors will experience all that a colonial Christmas has to offer, as well as a few modern amenities.

Participants can tour the village by foot or horse drawn wagon, stopping in to tour many of the open galleries, museums and inns.

Children will enjoy seeing Santa at the Vermont Country Store, making ornaments at the West River Gallery or participating in many of the activities like face painting, story-telling and crafts at the historic Little School and Wilder Memorial Library. One-of-a-kind gifts can be purchased at the Vermont Country Store and Village Shops, and the historic Weston Playhouse will host local artist and vendor such as Woodcock Farms, Peabody Mountain Apiaries and In Touch Therapeutics Massage. Raffle tickets can be purchased in the Weston Playhouse to win one of the many prizes being offered by local businesses. The 208 year-old Old Parish Church will be decorated for the season and has a full event schedule including Christmas music, a community reading of A Christmas Carol with Sam Lloyd and live music from the Nordic Harmoni Singers.

The day will end with Santa leading carol singing to the Village Green for the lighting of the Weston Christmas Tree. Dinner will be served at the Inn at Weston and the Bryant House; Out of town visitors can rest their heads at one of the many local inns offering specials for the weekend.

Building Renovations at RCHS Focus on Animal Health The Board of Directors of the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) recently approved building renovations at the shelter on Stevens Road in Pittsford. The renovation project will address serious inadequacies in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, will improve work and animal traffic flow and will significantly reduce cross contamination of materials and exposure to pathogens for the resident animals.

Additionally, changing to more efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems will help lower costs and cut the shelter ’s carbon emissions.

RCHS Executive Director, Gretchen Goodman, discussed the

current HVAC system explaining that “it currently operates at less than 20% of industry standards for air exchange”.

Originally built in 1968, the nonpublic work area of the building is a converted 1960s apartment whose rooms are poorly designed for the uses they now see.

Designed by John Berryhill of NBF Architects in Rutland the project was awarded to Naylor and Breen Builders of Brandon and will take approximately 3 months to complete.

Private donations and the humane society’s savings will fund the project.

Founded in 1959, for 50 years the Rutland County Humane Society has been dedicated to advocating

for and working towards a responsible and humane community.

RCHS provides shelter and adoption opportunities for pets who are homeless and promotes animal welfare through community programs that benefit both animals and people. RCHS is a private, non-profit organization serving the communities of Rutland County, VT. RCHS receives no financial support from any national or local humane organization. Programs are supported solely by donations, memberships and fund raising events.

On Friday, December 4, a Holiday Benefit Concert will take place in the Old Parish Church in Weston, on Route 100 just South of the village. The time is 7 p.m. and admission is $10. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to Neighborhood Connections of Londonderry.

Performers appearing in the concert include Will Danforth, Erik Johansson and the group House Blend.

Will Danforth is an award-winning songwriter and recording artist with 5 albums to his credit and over 35 years of performing experience. His music ranges from traditional folk, blues and classic country to contemporary covers and roots-based original songs. Will accompanies his singing on the guitar, blues harp and slide guitar.

Erik Johansson writes and sings songs about love, family, prayer and spirit, accompanying himself on the harp. He has been a songwriter since the seventh grade and has been a harpist for over 35 years. His music is heart warming and his baritone vocals are inspiring.

Formed in 2006, House Blend is an assembly of veteran singers from Vermont and New Hampshire.

They are known for their many styles of a capella singing of tunes from around the world and throughout musical history. Their diverse musical talents create a harmonious brew.

The concert is the first presentation by “Hearts and Voices; the Zeller Performance Series”, which will offer other presentations of music and the spoken word at future dates. Hearts and Voices is funded by memorial gifts given in memory of G. Frederick (“Fritz”) Zeller, a respected teacher and counselor and a beloved member of the Old Parish Church.

Neighborhood Connections is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with the people of the greater Londonderry-Weston area. Their mission is to provide preventive healthcare, education and social services with particular emphasis on those most vulnerable. They also act as a coordinating agency, providing connection and referral between various other social service organizations in the area.

This concert promises to be a highlight of the upcoming Holiday Season.

Mouthwatering and moist, deep-fried turkey will keep guests raving long after the last bite.

Authentic turkey deepfrying starts with 100 percent peanut oil. With a high smoke point and a pleasing flavor, 100 percent peanut oil seals the juices inside the crispy, golden skin, which keeps the meat deliciously tender. In addition to great taste, research shows that peanut oil is as heart healthy as olive oil and can actually improve

cholesterol levels. This method cuts cooking time in half, leaving your kitchen (and your evening) open for other things.

Try this recipe during the holidays, at a tailgate party or for your next family gathering: Heavenly and Healthy Deep-Fried Turkey: 1 whole turkey 1 tablespoon of salt 1 teaspoon of black pepper 1 teaspoon of garlic powder 2 tablespoons of your favorite dry rub 3-5 gallons 100 percent peanut oil (just to cover the turkey) Directions: Wash bird inside and

out and allow to drain.

Rub turkey with the salt, pepper, garlic and dry rub. Allow to sit at room temperature for 1 hour or until completely thawed and dry. Preheat peanut oil outdoors in a turkey fryer or a very large stockpot to 350 degrees F. Carefully lower turkey into hot oil either in the fryer basket or using a sturdy tool inserted into the chest cavity.

Submerge the turkey completely. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird.

Internal temperature should reach 165 degrees. Remove turkey from the oil. Let sit 20 minutes before serving.

Get In The Game A View On Sports By Editor Joe Milliken

Two weeks after New England Patriots coach Bill Belickick made the decision to go for it on fourth down and two from their own 28-yard line, football folks are still talking about the decision that ultimately cost the Patriots a win against Peyton Manning and the rival Colts.

Of course you know the story by now, instead of punting the ball away on fourth down and forcing Manning to drive the length of the field with 2:08 left in the game, the Pats stalled on fourth down, giving (arguably) the league's most dangerous quarterback the ball inside the 30yard line with just under two minutes to work with. Game over and thanks for coming.

Looking back in hindsight, which of course is always 20-20, it certainly appears that Belichick's decision to not punt the ball cost the Patriots this game.

However, there are a couple other aspects of this game to look at, which led up to

Belichick's late-game gamble.

Turnovers also played a big role in this game, which included an interception and fumble from Brady and a costly fumble into the end zone from Laurence Maroney, certainly made this game closer than it should have been.

However here is another very telling statistic, not just for this game, but the entire season.

The all-time, NorthSouth series is currently tied 4-4.

Representing the Bellows Falls Union High School Terriers will be Tim Muzzey, Corbin Parker and Josh Pratt, while the Springfield High School Cosmos will be represented by Brandon Boyle, Matt Mitchell, Ben Cox and Tim Wallace.

The Burr & Burton Academy Bulldogs will send Nick Perni, Jerrid Cobb and James Buss, while the Brattleboro High School Colonels will be represented by David Freeman, Mark La Valley, Zach Weatherford and Devon Rhode.

Granted, Belichick's gutsy call probably played the biggest role in the loss to the Colts, but the big concern should be the Patriots running game.

Maroney has gotten his chance, however he fumbles too much, gets hurt too much and doesn't run "down hill".

KC ace Zack Greinke was recently named the American League Cy Young Award winner, given to the league's best pitcher.

Pitching for a horrible Royals team, Greinke won 16 games and led the league in earned run average (2.18), receiving 25 of a possible 28 votes to easily win the award.

What a turnaround for

a guy who just two seasons ago, led the league in losses and was considering retirement before being treated for a social anxiety disorder.

---------------------------In Red Sox Nation news, let's hope Theo Epstein and Co. have some big free agent splash planned (or the resigning of Jason Bay), after announcing this week that ticket prices for eight sections in Fenway Park will go up, or roughly 50% of the seats in the park.

The average Red Sox ticket is now $50.24, with only the New York Yankees ($72.97) with a higher average ticket price.

Yup, I sure hope the Sox have something big planned.
