Salisbury man shoots at troopers, takes his life

SALISBURY — “Dusty” Woodburn, 52, r eportedly committed suicide Nov. 17 during an armed encounter with police. The incident took p lace a t a n a partment building on Lake Dunmor e Road in Kampersville Park. Police had surrounded the building a few individuals, including the press, were allowed near the scene. The incident had originally been er ported as a hostage-taking. Vermont State Police detectives said the incident erupted early in the morning Nov. 17 when Woodburn and his girlfriend, Laurie Lafountain, argued over a text message sent to her. The text was from another man, police said. Lafountain eventually fled the apartment to call 911; she also contacted two of br others to aid her. Next, she heard gunshots. State troopers arrived and tried to talk to W oodburn, but he told police he was armed. A VSP tactical team evacuated r esidents of two apartment units inside the Kampersville Park building. Next, according to VSP officials, Woodburn raised the gun and pointed it at the troopers. A tr ooper fir ed a shot at Woodburn. “At this time, troopers lost sight of Woodburn as he r etreated further into the r esidence," VSP Col. T om L'Esperance said at a news conference held in Williston following the incident. “The tr oopers and the Lafountain br others ran out of the building. Laurie Lafountain stayed inside, but came running outside after Woodburn shot himself. She observed him on the floor of the kitchen, which he was pr obably dyin g at that point if not dead. The troopers were unsure at that point what his status was other than he still had a weapon and they set up a perimeter,” L'Esperance said. Troopers eventually entered the apartment. W oodburn was found dead on the kitchen floor.

By early November, the work crew was starting on demolishing their thir d home and delivering a “clean slate” to residents who are anxious to get on with their lives after the flood. A total of 20 homes at W eston's were slated for demolition through the pr ogram, which has worked over the last two months to substantially reduce the cost of removal by lining up several homes in the same locations for on-site demolition. Masuy is named 2011 Business Person of Year By Lou Varricchio

lou@addison-eagle.com RUTLAND — The Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce named Pierr e Masuy, Plant Manager, OMYA, Inc.’s Florence V erpol Plant the 2011 Business Person of the Year. During his r emarks T om Donahue, CEO of the Rutland Regiona Chamber of Comemrce, noted noted the importance of the OMYA facility to the regional economy. The plant is the thir d largest in Omya’s worldwide system, employing a staf f of 175 workers. The plant is also the lar gest customer of V ermont Railway. Masuy oversaw construction of the plant’s multimillion-dollar dewatering facility that came online in 2009, recycling 750,000 gallons of water a day from the calcium carbonate manufacturing process.
