Santa’s arrival, tree lighting in Depot Park
The tradition of Santa making his way into Rutland to help kick off the holiday season continues with Santa’s Arrival and Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 3. The excitement begins at 6 p.m. where Santa arrives in style in Depot Park. Rutland City Mayor Christopher Louras will join in Santa’s arrival. Prior to Santa’s arrival there will be carols, hot chocolate and the announcing of the winners of the 2010 downtown holiday lights contest. A lucky child will assist Santa and Mayor Louras to light the holiday tree. The Green Mountain Boys barbershop quartet will sing carols to add to the festive evening. Once the holiday tree is lit, Santa will head to the ...Turn to page 13 to read more on Lights

Conclusion EditorÕ s Note: Two Vermont women mystery writers are researching an unsolved 1935 triple murder in east Middlebury, Vt., as part of their effort to write a realistic novel about the tragedy. During their interview session with the late Robert Fenn of East Middlebury, writers Roxanna Emilo and Kathy Brande of Bristol, both women helped him search for a piece of cloth evidence removed from the crime scene and stored in his East Middlebury house; the fragment of awning canvas was never found. Fenn died a few years later. ...Turn to page 11 to read more on Murder

Mill River Union High School senior students Haley Cotrupi and Amber Hannan volunteered their time at a recent Stafford Technical Center SADD Chapter foot race. The girls, with Richard Frank, president of the Marble Valley Runners, helped direct runners through Rutland’s famous Howe Center.
Okemo chef earns certificate Okemo Mountain Resort Executive Chef Michael Breen was designated Certified Executive Chef by The American Culinary Federation. The Executive Chef certification identifies those chefs who have demonstrated a level of culinary competence and expertise through their education, work experience, culinary knowledge and skills consistent with the executive chef level. The ACF Executive Chef certification is the fourth level of official recognition in the organization’s Cooking Professional category. It is eclipsed only by the elite Master Chef designation. “It’s not quite Iron Chef,” said Breen, “but the timed practical examination required me to create a fish course, a salad course and an entrée, using 17 or 18 items from a market basket, in front of ACF judges who were observing my organization, sanitation and utilization skills.” Breen has held the position of executive chef at Okemo since the resort broadened its culinary offerings with the opening of the Jackson Gore Inn and Coleman Brook Tavern in 2003.

CKS School adds new electronic whiteboard
Christ the King School teacher Wendy Hackett guides a student using an interactive electronic whiteboard, a stateof-the-art learning tool that is part of a new science and technology initiative at Rutland’s Roman Catholic schools.
Christ the King School in Rutland has received a grant from McDonald’s affiliated charities to equip another classroom with an interactive whiteboard (IWB) as part of the 21st Century Learning Initiative by Rutland’s Roman Catholic schools. The grant was made possible by generous donations from the local McDonald’s franchise (Cough Inc., Charles Coughlin, owner) and Corporate Ronald McDonald House Charities. Over the past year, CKS and Mount Saint Joseph Academy have implemented numerous science and technology upgrades, thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents and friends. The Rutland Catholic Schools Development Committee continues to receive donations for these initiatives, with the goal of making the CKS and MSJ facilities second-to-none. The committee sought this grant on behalf of the Christ the King
School campus. Ò I was very excited to hear that we had been awarded the McDonald’s grant this October,” said CKS Principal Carol Wincowski. “Throughout the past several months we have been able to actualize six interactive whiteboards at CKS. With the grant money we will be able to put one more interactive whiteboard in place in the next 30 days!” An interactive whiteboard is a large display that uses a computer and a projector to project the computer’s desktop onto the board’s surface on the wall where users can control the computer using their fingers or pens. “This grant puts us that much closer to our goal of an interactive whiteboard in every classroom,” Wincowski said. “We are grateful to McDonald’s for their support.”
