A week of Halloween movies at the Paramount

Pittsford Haunted House will scare kids, adults

By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com Just as New York City has its darkish doppelganger, Gotham City of the comicbooks, so, too Rutland City morphs into its noir twin—let’s call it “Halloween City”—every year. This fact is due mostly to the growing popularity of Rutland’s downtown Halloween parade and spooky area events leading up to the big event. But Rutland’s annual costume parade wouldn’t have the high profile it has today if it weren’t for several popular comicbook superhero capers in the 1970s and ‘80s that featured this local fright-night happening. Thus, Rutland’s Halloween Parade has gained an international reputation, at least among comicbook fans, as a kind of autumnal Mardi Gras where even Superman and Batman feel at home. Despite this Halloween aura, families are the focus here and everyone has fun; the event, while spooky enough, is a safe and wholesome affair. To help bring out the ghouls and goblins in downtown this Halloween, Paramount Theatre officials just announced three big-screen films that will be screened over three days—a nice touch to celebrate Rutland’s Halloween Week. •Mel Brooks classic 1970s era “Young Frankenstein” stars Gene Wilder as the mad scientist Dr. Frankenstein and Peter Boyle as the doctor’s monster. One screening only,

newmarketpress@denpubs.com PITTSFORD — The Pittsford Haunted House is one of the area’s favorite, spookiest Halloween destinations. Originally a children’s sanitarium in the years following World War I, the old haunted house and grounds in Pittsford are now owned by the Pittsford School District. With no modern use, the idea occurred to local firefighters that the old hospital could be the perfect setting for an annual fundraising event the would the all-volunteer Pittsford Fire Department solvent. Since its founding, the Pittsford Haunted House has received volunteer help from other local squads including the Brandon Fire and Rescue Squad. A fun-loving crew of 100 firefighters and other volunteer staffers keep the tricks and treats coming year after year. By the looks of the place, it looks like these fire guys and dolls missed their calling as Hollywood special effects artists.

Candidates debate in Ludlow By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com As the 2010 political campaign season approaches the November election, Ludlow area voters had a unique opportunity to meet Windsor-Rutland candidates and listen to spirited debate covering everything from the fate of Vermont Yankee to Vermont property taxes. FOLA, the Friends of Ludlow Auditorium, recently sponsored a debate among the candidates for the three Windsor County seats in the Vermont Senate and those seeking the Windsor-Rutland-1 House seat. Debate candidates included John Campell, Dennis Devereux, Brigid Faenza, Dick McCormack, John MacGovern, Alice Nitka, and Fran Renaud. Devereux and Faenza are seeking the Windsor-
