Okemo set to open alpine roller-coaster thriller

newmarketpress@denpubs.com You sure don’t find fourseason roller coasters open for thrill seekers outside of Sunbelt fun parks. But next month, Vermont will be the place for coaster fans when the Okemo Mountain Coaster at Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow will open for the public.

While it’s not your father’s roller coaster—it’s part roller coaster, part bobsled, part alpine slide—the apres ride looks just as fun, maybe more so. It’s ideally adapted to Vermont’s alpine heights, regardless of the time of year—rain, snow or shine.

Manufactured by Weigand of Germany—where engineered safety and mountain thrills go hand-in-hand— Okemo’s coaster is a marvel of amusement design. It features maintenance-free stainless steel tubular rails for an ski-like run down the mountain.

According to Okemo publicity, riders will start with a five-minute, 1,600-foot climb followed by a 375 verticalfoot descent along 3,100 feet of track that follows the contours of the mountain with added waves, camel backs, banking loops, and a “twister” section, at speeds of up to 25 mph.

Okemo’s Bonnie MacPherson said ride plans are on schedule.

Bowling for Babies A Striking Success!

Families from Brattleboro to Brandon gathered at the Rutland Bowlerama recently and raised over $2,200 for Share Southern Vermont, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support.

The event was a celebration of family with kids and parents alike bowling game after game. Lanes were sponsored in memory of angel babies and the kids basket raffle was a local success.

“This is my favorite annual event” said Cara Tyrrell, director of the group, “We have so much fun. We smile and laugh, making forever memories with our friends and family while supporting this cause that fills a much needed gap in our communities.”

Recently, SSV joined their vision with the Women’s and Children’s Unit at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Together they are working to ensure that no family has to live their sad moment alone.

Blood-drive movie to premiere at the Paramount

By Steve Costello Director Art Jones and Bruce Bouchard, executive director of the Paramount Theatre, announced last week that the feature-length Rutland-focused documentary, "The Blood in this Town" will be presented in a "Sneak Preview to Benefit the Paramount Theatre" on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m.

There will be two additional "Sneak Previews" at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. Proceeds will benefit The Paramount.

"The Blood in this Town" is a 95-minute documentary chronicling Rutland's drive to revitalize itself during America's deep economic crisis.

The film uses the town's record-breaking Gift-of-Life Marathon blood drive to explore how a struggling, post-industrial town can revive itself from the grassroots up. From initiatives like the Rutland Creative Economy and the creation of a year-round Farmers' Market to entrepreneurial

startups and the building of a world-class trail system in Pine Hill Park, Rutland shows how a community's determination and true-grit creativity can provide a way forward for thousands of struggling towns across America.

"The film shows sides of Rutland that many people may not even realize exist," said Jones. “Rutland, despite some big challenges, has an amazing range of imaginative, energetic people who are not waiting around for change to come to them. More and more, they are uniting, putting political and other differences aside to work together for the good of the town. That’s something this nation as a whole can learn from, and should know about.”

The documentary was filmed over seven months - from December 2009 to the summer of 2010 - covering the daylong action of last year's dramatic Gift-Of-Life Marathon, a range of dynamic community initiatives, and day-to-day life in town. The film was crafted from over 52 hours of footage and 40 individual interviews.

The film was made by Art Jones of Great Jones Productions in New York. Jones is a veteran filmmaker who began his work in documentaries on PBS’s "Frontline" in the 1980s.

Since 1991, he has headed Great Jones Productions—writing, directing and producing documentary-based films for a host of educational, cultural and corporate clients, including IBM, Merck, YMCA and Time Warner—thereby creating a funding engine for the development of documentary and narrative films.

The Oct. 23 sneak preview to benefit the Paramount Theatre will include a pre-film cocktail hour (6:30-7:30 p.m.), a short pre-film discussion, the sneak preview (7:45 p.m.) and a talk and Q&A session afterward with Jones. Tickets are $25.

Tickets for the Oct. 24 showings at 1:30 and 4 p.m. are $6 for adults and $4 for children.

ost people think solar energy is best collected on the Earth. Actually, it makes more sense to collect sun power in Earth orbit and then beam the energy home via microwaves.

Orbiting comsats, even manned spacecraft, have used solar power since the 1960s. However, if you’re going beyond the orbit of Mars, it makes much more sense to use nuclear power sources, but we’ll corral our discussion to collecting the vast amount of sunlight falling on near Earth space with orbiting solarsats.

The idea of solarsats has been around since the 1950s, but with the price of oil rising steadily and fears of peaceful nuclear power generation here on terra firms, the 21st century may become the century of solarsats.

According to Jeff Keuter, president of the George C. Marshall Institute, space-based solar power developing a string of solar satellites around the Earth is technically feasible today, “It will require a great deal of money,” he said, “but it is certainly possible.”

An average of 341 watts of solar energy falls on every square meter of Earth. This includes both Earth’s night side and north and south poles. Unfortunately, our atmosphere blocks a lot of the Sun’s energy which is where solarsats come in to save the day.

Free of Earth’s blanket of air, an orbiting fleet of solarsats could collect up to 5 kilowatts of energy per square meter.

A recent U.S. government study suggests that a large solarsat, providing enough energy to light several large cities the size of Burlington, would cost $10 billion. The price tag excludes ground-based infrastructure to collect the solarsat’s beamed microwaves and distribute the electricity, etc.

Science writer Frazer Cain is a proponent of solarsats but even he recognizes the sticker-shock factor.

“There are obvious safety risks from having a huge microwave beam striking the Earth,” he said. “And the costs of launching and maintaining the solar satellites will be enormous. But it might just be the idea that keeps our energy hungry economies going after the fossil fuels run out.”

But Cain has said a fully operational space-based solarsat could

WEDNESDAY October 13, 2010 be in orbit by 2020, “but that is if we started work now.”

Japan is currently spending millions of yen to develop a prototype solarsat that’s still many years away from flying. “…This is a far cry from planning to get full-scale operations underway in a little over a decade,” Cain noted.

But not everyone is accepting the U.S government’s inflated estimated price tag for a solarsat.

By Lou Varricchio One new firm that is pioneering space-based power is Exploration Partners, LLC of New Mexico and Oklahoma. The firm is a shoe-string operation but it’s one among a group of creative, emerging pioneers in solarsat financing and development.

Formed in 2005 by pioneers Royce Jones and Tom Taylor, E.P. developed two, low-cost space-solar power satellite designs. The designs were created with cost effectiveness and safety in mind.

A single E.P. solarsat could generate 100 megawatts of electrical power. Estimated costs? How does $250 million per satellite plus $150 million to launch in low Earth orbit sound? That’s certainly lower than U.S government estimates.

According to E.P.’s Royce Jones, “The financing (for our solarsat plan) is pretty straight forward. Each power satellite is leased to the end user. We don't sell the power generated, they do.

Since the satellites are small, i.e., only 20,000 kg., and can launch on a single existing launch vehicle, they are fairly inexpensive versus building a nuke plant. Each satellite, that we call SolarSat, can produce 100MW of power to the grid. There are two basic markets—the northern nations and the equatorial nations. Each market will have its own constellation of satellites.”

“The Okemo Mountain Coaster will serve as an anchor for other Jackson Gore activities,” said Ted Reeves, vice president of Okemo Real Estate and Development. “It will become another fun, alternative, family activity in summer and winter.”

There are only six similar mountain coaster rides located in North America.

The Outlook will test ride the Okemo coaster next month and provide readers with a sneak peak—er, peek—at a ride that promises all the thrills of downhill skiing without the skis.

ome pretentious folks at the modern theoretical end of actual architectural and engineering construction like to deploy the lofty phrase “the built environment” as they evaluate the results of real practitioners’ design efforts.

At the classical theoretical end, the ancient Roman engineer and architect Vitruvius was more straight forward. The work, he wrote, must have three qualities: firmness (no Kansas City hotel sky-walk collapses); commodity (no multi hundreds-of-dollarsper-square-foot donor named collegiate extravagances), and delight (no Frank Gehry randomly distorted crushed-tin-can appearances).

Neither Vitruvius nor the modernists theorized about the role of user behavior, although it was the basis of Coliseum design then and Yankee Stadium now, just as roadusers were design factors in both civilizations—then and now.

Consider the Roman-road speed bump: typically misidentified as pedestrian crossing blocks on such arteries as the Appian Way. It’s hard to believe that they were so closely-spaced and built nearly a foot above the traveled way because of road-mud or trash depth, and easier to believe that their height and close spacing were engineered to cause proto-NASCAR charioteers to reduce speed and steer carefully for the narrow gaps to prevent embarrassing and expensive wheel destruction.

Getting mobs of pedestrians into and out of a venue is a problem different from getting individual vehicle drivers to their destinations without killing each other or wrecking their mechanized (or not) chariots, but it shares the necessity of guessing how courteously (or not) their human design-users will behave toward each other. That’s a tougher guess in highway design than in stadium design; the latter hasn’t changed much in two millennia; in the former, designers still don’t know and can’t reliably predict how members of the modern civilization will conduct themselves.

When John Keats wrote “The Insolent Chariots” in 1958, his complaint wasn’t entirely that highways were paving over too much grassland; it was also that motorized-chariot drivers weren’t nice to each other. Starting in the ‘20s and ‘30s, when motorized vehicle were replacing horse-drawn ones on a large scale, highway designers couldn’t predict and design for driver behavior as well as Roman stadium designers could, for pedestrian behavior. Their abilities in the soft-science end of highway design haven’t improved since, while their skills at the hard-science engineering end have.

Today, epoxy-clad reinforcing steel doesn’t rust and self-destruct in the bridge concrete, but some drivers still assault each other at the lane merge and at the traffic circle, places where, more than the straight and open road, designers must assume some modicum of predictable inter-driver manners. It isn’t always there.

Highway engineers have done better when designing around driver-self-interest instinct, which explains why, while Keats was writing his anti-auto polemic, the site planners of the New Seabury residential development on Cape Cod deliberately flouted standard practice and made the roads narrow, curvy, and bumpy: to keep speeds down. Today it’s called the design-speed principle, and it’s based on the fairly reliable fact that drivers won’t do 70 where they can’t see stopping distance ahead. In contrast, standard practice (on the Interstates, for example), calls for design speeds well in excess of 100 and government then hires ticket-issuers to profit from punishing the designed-for behavior.

Highway designers used to be more sanguine about driver

manners than they are today: thus, when I first saw a stateof-the-art auto road built in the ‘20’s on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I understood that the design intent for the paved concrete center lane, flanked on each side by a gravel lane, was that drivers would courteously move off the higher-speed surface when they saw a car coming. It proved to be overly optimistic.

Thirty years later, in Massachusetts, the gravel lanes were concretized, but it still didn’t work: the center lane then was called “the suicide lane”.

Today, some of the Interstate on-ramps display “yield” signage and some don’t, and in some parts of the Heartland right-lane drivers move over, signage or not, to accommodate entrants, while coastal-State and urban drivers mostly don’t. (Historical note: in 1913 Wisconsin adopted a yield-to-right rule, giving legal priority to the on-ramp charioteers. It hasn’t survived.)

The traffic circle has survived in Mark Twain fashion (reports of its death have been greatly exaggerated) and in its modern incarnations is labeled variously as rotary (larger central circle) or roundabout (smaller central circle).

Rotaries were part of a highway subcourse in urban planning when I was in the halls-of-ivy classroom. We were instructed that the gyratoire was a brilliant French engineering innovation in the early 20th century. Why, it functioned perfectly around the Place de l’Etoile—the Arc de Triomphe site in Paris—and was in midcentury disfavor in the U.S. only because Anglo-Saxon drivers were inherently less civilized than their Gallic betters.

As you can now see in a simple web search, the then-unchallengeable academic Francophilia doctrine was—shall we say— misinformed. The first traffic circle, of roundabout dimensions, actually preceded the French rotary by three years when it was built by Americans in New York City’s Columbus Circle (get it?) in 1904. It’s still there.

Apparently, the original French word isn’t a la mode any more; the preferred new one is rond-point.

As for the modern gyratoire in les montagnes verdes, its first design attempt, some five years ago on Shelburne Street in downtown Burlington, has suffered a post-conception pre-birth (temporary?) abortion.

The second, now in downtown Middlebury, has apparently survived the choice process which terminated its sibling; it will soon be on the ground north of the new Cross Street Bridge. How well will this rotary perform?

Well, that depends on the inherent courtesy/civilization level of its users. Given that Middlebury is more Europhile in general and Francophile, in particular, than your quintessential old-Vermont town of East Overshoe—and that the local drivers can therefore be expected by the highway designers to be more understandably and predictably courteous to each others and to visitors than mere ordinary Americans—its performance should please its designers, taxpayers, and charioteers.

‘Kostka Walk’ in West Rutland The St. Bridget and St. Stanislaus Kostka Religious Education classes are sponsoring the annual Kostka Walk for Hunger on Sunday, Oct. 17. The walk begins at 10 a.m. from St. Bridget Church and proceeds through the center of West Rutland. The goal of the Kostka Walk is to raise awareness about the need for food in the community.

All monetary and food donations will go directly to the West Rutland Food Shelf. Donations can be dropped off at St. Bridget Church on Sunday until noon. All are welcome to participate in the walk.

The walk takes its name from St. Stanislaus Kostka who, as a young man of 17, walked from Vienna to Rome to fulfill his dream of becoming a priest. He took nothing with him, and relied on the generosity of others to provide him with food along his journey. In the same way, the Kostka Walk is a symbol of our hope that others’ generosity will feed those in need.

Since opening on Jan. 31, 2009, the West Rutland Food Shelf has served several thousand individuals from West Rutland and beyond. The Shelf, under the direction of Tony Morgan, is in great need of food during these difficult economic times.

During the 2009 walk, over 500 food items were collected, and sponsors contributed $1,524 to the food shelf.

Vermont income taxes: in the middle of the pack A new 50-state analysis of state income taxes by Public Assets Institute shows that Vermont ranks in the middle of states in the rest of the country. While much has been made of Vermont’s high tax rates, the amount taxpayers actually pay in Vermont is lower than in many other states because of deductions and other adjustments and the state’s progressive rate structure. This analysis looked at the total income taxes paid in each state in 2008 and divided it by the total adjusted gross income (AGI)—that is, income before deductions and other adjustments.

Using this “effective tax rate” measure, Vermont was no. 23 among states when they were ranked highest to lowest. Fortythree states levy a personal income tax; seven do not.

“We hear a lot about Vermont’s top income tax rate, which is relatively high because Vermont has a long traditional of progressive income taxes. Those who get the greatest financial benefit from society’s public structures are expected to contribute the most to maintaining them,” said Paul Cillo, president of the Public Assets Institute. “But few people pay that top rate because it applies only to taxable income above about $372,000, after deductions and exemptions have been subtracted.

“If we want to see how Vermont’s income tax stacks up against the other states, the most straightforward way is to look at the amount Vermonters actually pay and divide it by their adjusted gross income, which is based on federal tax laws and is, therefore, the same for every state.”

The Public Assets report shows that Vermont’s effect tax rate was 3.9 percent in 2008. Among the states with an income tax, the effective rates ranged from 0.2 percent in Tennessee to 7.0 percent in Oregon.

“Because we have progressive income tax rates, people in the higher income brackets have an effective tax rate that is higher than 3.9 percent; the rate is lower for those in the lower brackets,” Cillo said. “How taxes are distributed is an important consideration. But it’s also useful to look at how much of Vermonters’ income goes to pay state income taxes, and how that stacks up against other states.”

Another common method of state tax comparison is to look at all taxes collected within a state—taxes paid by residents as well as those paid by businesses and non-residents. The U.S. Census used to publish annual reports calculating state taxes or state and local taxes on a per capita basis. However, the census stopped issuing those reports, explaining that they presented a distorted picture for states, such as tourist states, that collect a lot of revenue from non-residents.

An annual report published by the District of Columbia and two studies done by the Vermont Legislature’s Joint Fiscal Office compare the taxes typical Vermonters pay with taxpayers in other states. The D.C. study compares the amounts paid by taxpayers in the largest city in each state. According to latest D.C. study, Vermont—as represented by typical Burlington families—falls in the middle when it comes to taxes paid as a percentage of income.

The legislature made modest tax changes in the last two years, a blue ribbon commission is studying the state’s tax structure, and taxes are likely to come up again in next year’s budget discussions. The state income tax is the largest source of state General Fund revenue. The tax generated $622.3 million in fiscal 2008, which was 52 percent of all General Fund receipts.

Pregnant Vermont teens eligible to get taxpayer help The Vermont Department for Children and Families announced last week that Vermont has been awarded taxpayer funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support pregnant and parenting teens.

These funds, approximately $3 million over the next three years, will be used

by DCF, in partnership with Parent Child Centers, to expand access to the Learning Together program throughout the state.

Learning Together is an intensive, interpersonal parent training program

that focuses on six components: onthe-job training, counseling, academics, parenting, job readiness, and interpersonal skills. Each participant is assigned a case manager to link her to other supports such as child care, health care, and housing.

“The Learning Together Program has shown positive results for teen mothers and their children,” said DCF Commissioner Steve Dale. “By providing teen parents and parents-to-be with the skills and support they need to succeed, we can expect to see improved

health outcomes for mothers and their babies, as well as increased levels of parent education.”

“This is a fabulous opportunity for Vermont to take Learning Together to the next level,” said Lee Lauber, executive director of the Family Center in Vermont. “We are delighted that the federal funders recognized the success of our partnership with DCF, and we know these funds will make a profound difference in the lives of Vermont families.”

he more familiar, capable and relaxed a postal clerk is with her daily counter activities, the more intricate a transaction she can handle—the fewer mistakes she’ll be liable to make.

A baseball batter relaxed, prepared—and confident with his abilities and knowledge of a pitcher—can point to where he’ll hit the ball without upsetting his concentration and hit the ball.

A hunter, in shape, who has spent countless years scouting the woods and many hours sighting in a rifle, can breathe easy while drawing bead and gently squeezing the trigger.

An actor needs to know the lines cold, inside out, to be free enough to elevate a performance beyond simply saying lines and hitting marks. The better prepared, the more time put in—not just on the part at hand, but on the craft in general—the more relaxed the actor can be; the more natural ability and talent will surface to bring special levels of beauty and integrity to the performance.

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart said, that at times during races, he is so relaxed that his mind often wanders from anything but the fact that he’s traveling 200 mph into a 30-degree banked turn with 42 other drivers. That’s relaxed!

On stage the other night, spoutin’ a riff I’ve run hundreds and hundreds of times, my mind wandered. It was not about baking a carnival squash with butter, nutmeg, maple syrup and cinnamon. It was not about diving into a pool full of vanilla cupcakes iced with chocolate. It was not about world peace, or Cuban cigars, or how good it feels shoe horning your thin socked foot into a leather loafer. It was not about lower taxes for everyone, even rich people (I like rich people even though it seems it’s not cool today to admire them)... No, when my mind wandered on stage it wandered to a wonder, which was—is there any difference between otters and beavers?

So smack in the middle of a riff I stopped and asked the audience: 1. Is there any difference between otters and beavers, and 2. If so, what are the differences?

A gal sitting stage left two rows back raised her hand. I called on her and she commenced to blather about otters and beavers, revealing only slight differences. Yet one bit of information stuck out. She said “beavers are venomous.”

“Really,” I toned “they’re Republicans?”

She also said otters live on land, beavers don’t. When I queried about why otters would have a beaver-like tail if they lived on land she said only “Well, they do swim, but they don’t live in the water.” So there.

Satisfied with the gal’s information—albeit a bit sad to learn beavers are venomous, because I’ve always thought I’d try to pet one if I got close enough—I continued the show.

Hi Rusty, We caught your show last Friday night in Brandon and loved it (as usual). Thanks for the many yuks.

You asked the audience for the difference between beavers and otters. I don't know if you were serious or goofing, but I didn't respond because, frankly, I didn't want to become part of the show! But in case you really wanted to know: •Beavers are rodents (yes, rodents, Order Rodentia), and thus related to squirrels, mice, porcupines, and other such critters. They have big incisors that they use to cut down trees, which they use to build their dams and lodges, and which they also eat. And beavers are NOT venomous, regardless of what the cute 20 year old in the front row said. I think she's spent too much time on the Internet and not enough in reality.

•Otters are carnivores (Order Carnivora), and more specifically Family Mustelidae, which means they are closely related to weasels, skunks, minks, fisher cats (not actually cats, by the way), martens, and the like.

In contrast to tree-eating beavers, they eat fish, crayfish, mussels, small mammals, and the like.

So, despite both living mostly in the water, beavers and otters are VERY different critters ecologically as well as how they are classified by my fellow egghead zoologists.

If you really wanted to know, there you have it. And if you didn't ... well, you shouldn't have asked!

Keep 'em laughing—we need more of that in this crazy world!

Library receives anonymous donation The Cavendish Fletcher Community Library has two new book clubs for local students. The first, known as the Advanced Readers’ Club. The club is open to students grades 4-6 and will meet once a month.

The second book club is an offshoot of the popular Booksploration after school program which meets every Wednesday for kindergarten and first-grade students.

Librarian Kata Welch noted that a donor provided funding for the reading programs recently.

“We couldn’t do this without the donation,” Welch said.

Lady Jacks fall to B.F. in overtime Get In The Game A View on Sports by Joe Milliken In a tough one to swallow, the Windsor High School girls' soccer team recently let one slip away, giving up a one goal lead in the second half and letting the Bellows falls Terriers slip, away with their first win of the season, 2-1, in Westminster.

The loss dropped Windsor to 2-7 on the season, as they continue to fight through injuries in search of a playoff berth, which would take a minimum of three wins to make happen.

Coming into the match, however, both teams resembled M*A*S*H units, as the Lady Yellow Jackets were without three players including Tierra Huntley and Nikki White, and the Terriers without four, including sharp-shooter Sara Dumont, who holds out hope of returning for the tournament if her team can find a way to get there.

The injuries showed early in this one as neither team could do much in the first 10 minutes but as luck would have it, Windsor actually scored their only goal just 30 seconds into the match, when a Terrier defender tried to clear a ball out of the box only to have it deflect off Yellow Jacket forward Aminah Orogi and past B.F. keeper Enny Mustapha.

The Yellow Jackets certainly had their chances to extend their lead, however, including two quality shots from Tegan Coley, one of which just cleared the crossbar and another point-blank shot from midfielder Emily Perkins that Mustapha made a nice, diving save on.

The half would end with the one-goal lead for Windsor but the feeling was that it could have been more, as the Yellow Jackets controlled most of the play but was also letting the winless Lady Terriers

In the second half, Windsor continued to put pressure on the Terriers' defense, but still could not bury that second goal, and as the half wore on Bellows Falls started gaining more and more momentum until they finally broke through.

With just under eight minutes left in regulation Terrier sophomore Brit Moyna, who had been working hard the entire match, found herself right in front of the goal with a loose ball and tapped it past Lady Jacket keeper Erin Rice to tie the match and force over time.

The Yellow Jackets one good opportunity in overtime to seal the win with a nice give-and-go, but the shot lofted just over the crossbar. It would be the last chance they got, as B.F. finally took advantage.

Just three minutes into the extra session, Lady Terrier captain Kammie Crawford found herself in a crowd right in front of the Windsor goal. "The goalie fumbled the ball a bit in the crowd," Crawford said after the game. "It bounced off someone right in front and I just kicked it in." While the Terrier bench emptied onto the field to celebrate their first win of the season, it was a tough one for Windsor to swallow, as their record (at press time) fell to 2-7.

However, to the Lady Yellow Jackets credit, they really did control most of

the match despite all their injury and roster issues. They did a good job in controlling the midfield and put together plenty of good scoring opportunities, but coach Bruce MacKay's team just couldn't finish off the opportunities. One wonders what this team could be capable of without all the injuries.

Windsor scores The Windsor High School field hockey team recently traveled to Springfield to take on the Lady Cosmos, scoring the lone goal early, then hanging on for a 10 win in Marble Valley League action.

Coming into the game at 5-2-1 on the season, the Lady Yellow Jackets were aggressive from the outset and carried the early play, forcing Springfield goalie Brittany Grant-Paul to make a couple early saves before Windsor's Amanda Ashline scored the only goal of the game at 27:18. Ashline took a nice through-pass from Aleigha Sykes and slammed a low shot from 10 feet out to give her team the lead.

Windsor continued to put the pressure on the Cosmos defense with three consecutive corners, forcing Grant-Paul to make two more quick saves and keep it a one-goal game. While on the other side of the ball, Springfield could not seem to generate any offense in the first half, although seniors Maria Stern and Jessie Haskell did a good job at moving the ball out of their own zones to help stem some of the Windsor pressure and keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

Coming off a good effort against Mount Anthony which produced a tie, the Lady Cosmos were looking to build on that momentum, however, it was not meant to be on this day as Windsor smothered the Springfield offense throughout the second half. The win pushed Windsor to (at press time) 6-2-1 on the season while Springfield 81392 dropped to 3-4-1.

The Wejua Files: In search of Bigfoot

By Lou Varricchio lou@addison-eagle.com Part 1: Editor’s note: This part of an occasional series about Bigfoot and Champ sightings in Vermont and New York.

In 1991 a popular science book, titled “The Hominid Gang: Behind the Scenes in the Search for Human Origins” written by Delta Willis, hit the international bestseller lists.

The book told the story of paleoanthropologists searching for fossil “ape men”, the ancestors of humans, in Africa. The term “Hominid Gang” has been used endearingly ever since; it now collectively describes dedicated paleo detectives searching for our prehistoric past.

Vermont and the North Country has its own “gang”—a gang of hominoid researchers; but this gang is in search of Bigfoot or Sasquatch, a strange woodland “ape” long thought to be extinct.

Hominoids are members of biology’s superfamily of primates; it includes apes and humans. So, based upon the details of dozens of eyewitness accounts in New York and Vermont since the 1600s, if a living (or

dead) Bigfoot creature is ever produced, it will most likely be classified as an hominoid by science.

This region’s “Hominoid Gang” include members of the Northern Sasquatch Research Society based in Hudson Falls, N.Y. NSRS members straddle the Vermont and New York state line; they include Frank Siecienski, of Hubbardton, Brian Gosselin (an eyewitness to the creature), of Whitehall, Cliff South, South Glens Falls, John Pearson and Bill Brann of Glens Falls.

Over the next several weeks, in several parts and through the voices of NSRS researchers, we’ll report on several spine-tingling accounts about Bigfoot in our region.

L.V.: How did the Northern Sasquatch Research Society get started?

Brann: We organized nearly six years ago, but our mutual interest and experience with Sasquatch sightings goes back 34 years-plus now.

L.V.: Are Bigfoot sightings something new in this part of Vermont and New York: Brann: In 1603, Samuel de Champlain reported several native stories about Sasquatch sightings along the St. Lawrence River. The Native Americans of that time

were calling the creature the Stone Giant and Hairy Wildman. In the 1700s, Robert Rogers and his Rangers were pursued by something in the North Woods. One of Roger ’s Rangers claimed the creature had legs as large as “spruce logs”.

Around Rogers’ time, Indians were calling the creature Wejua—which means “wet skin”. Settlers in Vermont in the early 1800s described an animal called Old Slippery Skin or Old Wet Skin. Was it wet or greasy looking? We don’t know. But the thing knocked over settler ’s fence rails, kicked manure piles, threw rocks, even chased cattle and goats.

Today, we use the western American Indian name, Sasquatch, even Bigfoot. And as we got into the 1900s, we started hearing reports of the animal in the Adirondacks.

L.V.: What put Sasquatch on the map around here? Was it the sighting made famous by NSRS research member Brian Gosselin, a former Whitehall police officer?

Brann: In 1976, Brian’s brother Paul Gosselin, 18, and a friend, Marty Padick, were traveling by auto down Abair Road in Hampton, N.Y. (near the Vermont state line, across from Fair Haven), when they thought

they heard a woman screaming, perhaps being molested, in the distance. They pulled over. Paul reached for his gun. He yelled, “What the hell is going on out there?” There was no response. Again, he yelled out. Nothing. They drove down Abair Road, turned around, and came back to the screaming site, facing the opposite way, and stopped. Both teens looked across the field to where the scream seemed to be come from. They noticed movement at a nearby telephone pole.

Whatever it was, it immediately started running—fast—toward their vehicle. Marty must have left 50 feet of rubber on the road as they got out of there.

L.V.: What happened next?

Brann: Both guys drove into Whitehall to report the incident to the police. But Brian Gosselin, who also saw the creature shortly after, should tell you the rest of this account.

Candidates for the three Windsor County Senate seats and for the Rutland-Windsor 1 House seat will participate in a Candidates' Forum at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14.

Sponsored by FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium), the forum will feature six candidates for the three Windsor County Senate seats. They are John Campbell (D), Henry Holmes (R), Dick McCormack (D), John MacGovern (R), Alice Nitka (D), and Fran Renaud (R).

Local pastor Olson Clark is fondly remembered The Rev. Olson W. Clark, former pastor of the Forestdale Wesleyan Church and formerly of 9906 Luckey Dr., died on Saturday, Oct. 2, at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, N.Y. Clark was born on March 9, 1918 in Chicago, Ill. and was a son of the late Lewis and Alice Wright Clark. In 1945 he married Lila M. Durling at Walderon Wesleyan Church in Walderon, Mich. Rev. Clark was a member of Houghton Wesleyan Church and had been director of the Houghton Area Senior Citizens.

Clark and Lila served at several churches—Rives Junction Wesleyan Church, Pittsford Wesleyan Church and Hastings Wesleyan Church, all in Michigan; Canandaigua Wesleyan Church for eight years; Waterveliet Wesleyan Church; Forest Dale Wesleyan Church in Vermont; and Garwoods United Methodist Church for eight years. He was predeceased by his wife on April 14, 2007.

Surviving Clark are four daughters, Margaret Clark of Freeport, N.Y., Patricia (Lyndon) Robinson of Thompsonville, Mich., Susan (David) Basnight of Valley Cottage, N.Y. and Sandra (Griffith) Vitalone of Canandaigua; three granddaughters, Julie Robinson and Stephanie and Kacie Vitalone; sister, Odena Hansen of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends gathered Oct. 8 at Kopler-Williams Funeral Home in Fillmore, N.Y. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Houghton, N.Y. .

Vermont workers: how low (wage) can you go?

Bad news for Vermont workers: A recently released MIT report shows that low-wage jobs will provide the biggest share of Vermont employment growth through 2018. The new report is titled “Polarization of Job Opportunities in the U.S. Labor Market”.

As the state and nation struggle through the worst recession since the 1930s, Vermont’s 6 percent unemployment rate and the 9.6 percent national jobless figure overshadow a decline in manufacturing jobs and other occupations that once supported middle-class families. Many companies have outsourced work and facilities overseas destroying the lives of American workers.

Equally troubling: the employment structure in Vermont reflects a national trend.

“The structure of job opportunities (in Vermont and elsewhere in) the United States has sharply polarized over the past two decades, with expanding job opportunities in both high-skill, high-wage occupations and low-skill, low-wage occupations, coupled with contracting opportunities in middle-wage, middle-skill white-collar and blue-collar jobs,” economist David Autor concluded in the MIT report.

In Vermont, the greatest demand, with more than 400 new openings a year, will be for cashiers and homecare aides, according to an analysis using state employment data. Another 362 positions are expected in each of the next eight years for retail sales. The median income for those three fields is $18,730, $21,130 and $22,840

The highest number of annual openings through 2018 are for cashiers, who are paid an average of $9.57 an hour.

According to the state data, 459 such positions are projected to open up each year.

Nursing is one of the few fields with both high demand and good pay. The projected 214 positions opening up annually for registered nurses pay an average of $30 an hour. On the other hand, home care aides are paid only $10 an hour. There are 426 anticipated openings for home care aides each year, the second highest for any of the almost 500 fields of work in Vermont There are 65 types of positions that are defined as “high demand” in Vermont, but just 10 fields are projected to have more than 100 openings each year through 2018. Just three of those occupations earn an average of at least $20 an hour. Executive secretaries make $20 an hour on average, registered nurses are paid $30 an hour, and accountants typically earn $31 an hour.

To be considered a job in “high demand,” an occupation must exceed both the statewide average for job creation, having at least 24 openings a year, and the statewide annual growth rate, measured at least 0.8 percent annually.

More than four of 10 Vermont jobs created through 2018, or 44 percent of annual openings, are classified as "low paying," according to the Vermont Department of Labor.

"Low-paying" in his analysis is classified as any position that earns less than $15.73 an hour, or $32,720 per year.

Some Vermont officials have been working to create jobs by reforming trade policies that would penalize U.S. companies that export American jobs and products, expanding broadband service, promoting employee-ownership of businesses, and encouraging major employers, and lowering the state’s burdensome property taxes.
