The Pulitzer-Prize winning drama was the Broadway debut of actor Paul Newman in 1953. It follows the story of Flo Owens and her two daughters, Madge and Millie, as well as the handsome but troubled newcomer, Hal. The role of Flo Owens is played by Rutland native, Chelsea Smith. The play is directed by Steve Small, a third-time guest director for the Castleton Theatre Arts Department. Small is the program director for the Addison Repertory Theatre in Middlebury. ART is a special training program for students interested in theatre arts, and has produced more than 60 shows in its 15-year history. The play is set in Kansas, where everything is going calmly and according to plan for widow Flo Owens and her two daughters. Madge, the oldest, is on her way to being a trophy wife while the younger, more rambunctious daughter Millie is getting ready to go to college on a scholarship. When Hal, a rough and handsome young bum, shows up and starts working for the neighbor next door, Flo starts to worry about the safety of her daughters. Performances on Thursday, Sept. 30, through Saturday, Oct. 2, are at 8 p.m. in the Casella Theater. A matinee on Sunday, Oct. 3, begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10. The box office is 802-468-1119.

CarterÕ s company, Rachel Carter, PR, represents MiddleburyÕ s Green Mountain Beverage, makers of Woodchuck Cider. Hard cider isnÕ t just for farmers anymoreÑi t is a beverage whose time has finally come. Just when weÕ re all getting used to delicious
