Sandy Killary
RUTLAND — Selected among several outstanding youth, Sandy Killary of Rutland competed against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Vermont State Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation recently. As the new Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County, 17-year-old Killary is an example of a young woman recognized for character, leadership skills, and a willingness to give back to her community. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As Boys & Girls Clubs of America's (BGCA) premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Killary, as Youth of the Year, encourages fellow club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles, and contributing to communities. “It’s gratifying for the staff to see the programs and the relationships we See SANDY page 6

Students win big in U.S. stamp art contest By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com POULTNEY — Poultney High School art teacher Melissa Kristiansen had always been searching for a highly visible “showcase project” for her talented art students to sink their collective teeth into. This year, she found the perfect project that was on the national stage—the 21st Annual Junior Federal Duck Stamp Competition.
After weeks of hard work creating their stamp designs, PHS students submitted their work and nervously waited for the results. After a short period time, news of the competition results arrived at the school. There was something for everyone to celebrate. PHS art student Jayme Mars was shocked when she first learned that she had won a second-place ribbon in the duck stamp design program. “I was amazed. I won a ribbon, certificate, and
a Peterson Guide called ‘Finding Your Wings’, a book on bird watching,.” Mars said. “I liked using the different colors in my picture, especially how I made the water wavy. I also liked seeing the shadow of the duck in the water.” PHS had three other art students win second place and two other students win third place in their age divisions. Ash borer is a looming threat Test traps in Vermont
By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — Like the insectoid alien invaders depicted in the 1995 sci-fi movie “Starship Troopers”, the dreaded ash borer is lurking on the northern and southern fringes of Vermont waiting to pounce. This destructive insect pest has been spotted north and south of us, so the State of Vermont isn’t taking any chances in gearing up for the coming war. Emerald ash borer or EAB: scientists call it Agrilus planipennis. It’s an exotic beetle that looks like a stubby grasshopper with a very nasty attitude.

Adult EABs chew on ash foliage with not much damage, but look out for EABs little ones, or larvae—they feed like demons on the inside bark of ash trees. There its 24/7 chewing cycle blocks water and nutrients to the trees. The ash trees—of which Vermont has millions in the wild— die of starvation.
