soldiers’ families Susanne Coffin, Family Assistant Center Specialist here in Southern Vermont, and the Westminster Family Readiness Group, are just two of the resources available to assist the families of Vermont soldiers deployed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Vermont National Guard Westminster Unit recently hosted its annual Open House at the Armory, with Coffin and the Readiness Group. The events featured included rides in military HUMVEEs, above.

Visitors had a chance to climb a rockwall, take a HUMVEE ride, go up in the bucket of the Westminster Fire Department Tower Truck, check out the VTARNG Recruiters and their Pit Crew Tire Changing Station, sign Windham County Sheriff Keith Clark's renewal petition supported by Bonnie Clark, as Sheriff Clark is serving alongside the Delta Dragons in Afghanistan.

Other organizations on display included the Vermont Liquor Control, the State Police, Golden Cross Ambulance and Cheryl the Clown.

The Westminster Family Readiness Group, consisting of family members of those deployed, also hosted other family support organizations, including the newest addition, Susanne Coffin who is now the Family Assistant Center of the Vermont Army National Guard for the Southern units, the Yellow Ribbon Group from Brattleboro, Post #37 American Legion and the Dragon's Den Lending Library.

The library, located in the Westminster armory, specializes in children’s books for the families of deployed soldiers.

Coffin, whose husband Voranus is serving in Afghanistan, said she is working with about 100 people in military families in the region. From emotional to financial, the toll that the deployment of a family member to a war zone takes on a family is considerable. Coffin said she is there to help the family find solutions to problems, whether it’s housing, child care or money issues.

“I’m hoping to get the word out that we have a FAC Down here,” she said. “I hope people take advantage of it. We are constantly meeting with people and groups who want to help out the families of soldiers.

And people should know that everything we do is highly confidential.”

Jelly Bean Tree Jumble Sale On Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., the Jelly Bean Tree Crafts Cooperative will hold a Jumble Sale of used goods in the Main Street Arts building in Saxtons River, rain or shine.

The non-profit artisans group has been collecting items of all kinds, including tools, toys, kitchen things, books, small furnishings, clothing, and even a rototiller. Home baked goods and coffee will also be available at the sale, which is being held to help the co-op regain losses incurred over the past year.

Buskey Wins April Winter Warmth Drawing BELLOWS FALLS - The first winner for Cota & Cota Heating Fuels’ Winter of Warmth raffle has been drawn, and the lucky recipient is Wil Buskey of ARC Mechanical.

Buskey generously decided to donate his Winter of Warmth to David’s House in Lebanon, NH. David’s House hosts and supports families with children receiving care at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Upcoming Senior Center Activities BELLOWS FALLS – The Bellows Falls Senior Center is offering some exciting trips for the upcoming months. Trips are mostly chartered tours with the exception of the August trip which will be on the Center ’s van.

May’s presentation is a concert by Daniel O’Donnell in Saratoga Springs on May 24. This will be a twoand-a-half hour performance of Irish ballads and songs. Tour includes show, lunch at the Golden Coral and transportation. Tickets still available.

July finds us traveling to Ogunquit, ME for an overnight stay. Included in this tour is a summer theater show at the Ogunquit Playhouse (Sound of Music), lunch at the Weathervane Restaurant in York, lobster bake at the Bull & Claw in Wells after the show, overnight at the Hampton Inn in Wells. Day two includes breakfast, a visit to the Stonewall Kitchens and a living history tour of historic Old York.

Big Bang Gala Opens Blue Dot Weekend GRAFTON – On Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. The Big Bang Opening Gala for the Nature Museum at Grafton will be held at Riverledge Farm in Grafton.

Remembering Rose Fowler Editor,the Outlook: In Memory of Rose Fowler Our community has lost a wonderful member whose presence will be missed by everyone- even if they had never met her. Rose was a formidable force who saw challenges within our town and charted a course to meet needs and to right wrongs. I feel very, very fortunate to have known her.

There are many stories that come to mind when thinking of Rose but, I think they can be summarized better in a list of “Ten things Rose taught me through example”: Nothing is impossible with hard work and determination If you build it, they will come!

Treat everyone equally- listen to them, think before you speak, and let your opinion be known.

Teach a person to fish… (or do a job, or drive, or paint….) one step at a time, when they have mastered that skill they will fish for life and have respect for the ecosystem.

Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself!

Set a good example and high standard. Don’t expect anyone to work harder or do more than you do.

Appreciate life, and your accomplishments.

Don’t take all of the credit- give credit where credit is deserved.

There are no crazy ideas- think big!

Ask, and you shall receive. If not, and it’s a reasonable request….ask again! Never give up!

Through her example and tenacious hard work, Rose brought the Rockingham Memorial Hospital out of the ashes and into the 21st century as an example and model in successful community health care that we have today. She did so with ample amounts of enthusiasm; love for this community, elbow grease and a bit of arm-twisting. She was a tireless advocate for her employees, recognizing their potential and pushing them to excel. She would coach, cajole, and encourage them in their work and their lives. She was exceptional in her ability to find the “right fit” between a potential employee and the work that they did. Rose wasn’t afraid to see a problem, walk up to it and tackle it, head on. She certainly wasn’t afraid to ask for money. From grants, to state initiatives, to past due bills, to bequests she could and would schmooze and badger those who held the purse strings- all for our collective benefit.

I am not able to get FACT TV, but imagine that Rose used her TV show, “Rose’s Tidbits” as a personal platform to further her agenda to better her community.

Good for her! Whether you agreed with her on an issue or not, she deserved that public platform. Rose gave 110% to this community. May you rest in peace, Rose.

And may we all take a little of her example and use it to lead our lives~ the world could use more Rose Fowlers.

“I’ve been watching you, Pop.” The first 10 mile stretch of road was hilly and straight but for two cow towns to slow for. Fluid forward motion and the school day and that he was growing, and the warm cab, and his father’s voice, and the truck tires revolving along polished asphalt, relaxed the boy so that between the tenth and twelfth mile his head drew slowly to the bench seat, like a bee to a node of mayonnaise, and landed just behind the shifter knob, near where the fleshy heal of his father’s hand had come to rest after engaging the transmission lever to fourth.

The boy was tall and wiry, and fit nicely curled on the red vinyl seat. He was content. Warm drool found it’s way to his cheekbone, congregating in the divots the seat pressed into his cheek. He was 14.

Tire moan, engine moan, steady rhythm; off fuel into the turn, back on fuel in the middle of the turn, steady increase of fuel uphill, feathering off fuel down hill; the father talking to himself at normal between-two-people conversational decibels; the boy’s half-dream cast his favorite school girls, with him as the hero, the one who gets the girls.

His dad knew how to drive, like nobody’s business; it had been his business. His driving was a gift to his son. The silky ride, a lullaby rocking the boy to sleep.

Six o’clock on-time arrival. Paste-ups to the camera room.

The press, with lots of luck, won’t break, and the paper will print, and the father and son will be on their way home by ten.

Eat. At the Fairlee Diner, Pat Roberts cooks with a limp, for the father a Hamburg steak, homemade applesauce, mashed potato, and wax beans. For the boy Mrs. Roberts serves two grilled franks, the kind that don’t snap like a tic, homemade applesauce, hand-cut well-done French fried potato’s, a thick heaping load of baked beans, melded with perfect amounts of molasses, maple syrup, and bacon, served piping hot. Brown as a Sherpa, perfectly shaped yet ductile, it seemed each bean had been baked individually to the boys taste.

A milkshake for the boy, couple cups of coffee for dad, and pie for both. The father alternated between apple, and custard. The boy always ordered banana cream. Pie is a desert men eat, he thought to himself.

After dinner back at the printers sitting in their truck waiting to hear the ring of the press bell, that might barely cut through tonight’s humidity, which alerts the pressmen to mind their fingers and shirtsleeves because the press is about to roll, the boy listens carefully to his father’s stories of growing up on the farm, now a “municipal” golf course, in Philadelphia. About the father’s uncles Stanley and Artie (Artie, the blind street-lamp lighter) and how Artie scored the distance between lamps by counting his steps aloud - and how his father and buddies

would creep up behind Artie and blow out the wick of Artie’s lighter. About the German mechanic who taught his father not to give up on a faulty engine “It vent before. If youv got eet back right, eet’s gotta go.” About planting, harvesting, and Harry the horse, which was his father’s favorite horse.

“This is what will happen, see? You have friends, guys you work for. It’s fun. You get a good job, one with benefits. Then you meet a girl and get married and have a place of your own with your wife. And you have kids. There ain’t much more than that to life.”

The boy found the lessons interesting and entertaining.

His favorite? The first time his father drove.

“One day, I was little, my pop caught me sitting behind the wheel of his Model T truck, daydreaming. He got in the other seat and said ‘Okay, see if you can drive this thing.’

It had a foot lever choke. I started it, put it in gear and took right off. He was surprised, he said, ‘Billy, how did you know how to do that?’

“I been watching you pop.”

They departed for home at midnight, the boy behind the wheel, the father instructing.

“This guy in front of you, he’s local - should be pulling off soon. If he doesn’t, take him, or he’ll drag you all the way to Barre. You know the route?”

The boy shifted in his seat.

“There’s a hill ahead. It’s straight, good to pass.”

He pressed the accelerator and picked up speed.

Quinta is a shy but sweet amazingly marked Calico who came in as stray from a farm where she was dumped along with her sister Quincy.

She likes to bat your hand when you wiggle your fingers, and is very playful. She lives in our Community Cat Room, and would prefer a quieter home. She is one of 39 cats all vying for families of their own.

This is a slower adoption time of year so the selection is great and you’d be helping a cat by providing a forever home.

We also have two older dogs. Dennis is a 9-10 year old German Shepherd who still has a lot of miles left on his life-o-dometer! He is very sweet and affectionate as is Zeus our 6 year old Beagle/something mix.

On Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m., The Nature Museum and Southern Vermont Astronomy will feature an indoor 45-minute talk by the SoVerA Research Group’s Rick Hunter on the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

Hunter will touch on events such as the Moon's phases, its seasons, tides, and eclipses, as well as a few flights of fancy into the distant past and future.

The presentation will be followed by an outdoor star party if the sky is clear enough. Local amateur astronomers will share their telescopes to help participants look deep into space.

The program is free to Museum and SoVerA members; nonmember adults $10, children 18 and under $5, family maximum $25. Pre-registration is requested by calling the Museum at 843-2111.

South Acworth Music Festival SOUTH ACWORTH, NH – The South Acworth Village Store is hosting a Music Festival on Saturday, May 29 from noon to 6 p.m. on the property adjacent to the store, Route 123-A in South Acworth, NH. A variety of musical styles will be played by danceable local bands at this lively event. The Lon-Jons, Hanky Banister, Will Turner, Sharon Miller & Victor Brandt, The Actones, Wes Cubberly & Friends, Jerry Lynch & Don Place, and The Jack Bowes are some of the groups that will play during the Music Festival.

There will also be children’s events such as face-painting, three-legged races and sack races.

Ann Firestone, president of Save Your Ass Long Ear Rescue, a non-profit donkey and mule rescue organization in South Acworth, will have a KissMy-Ass Booth for animal lovers who would like to nuzzle the soft fuzzy muzzle of a donkey.

Lots of good food will be available including Smokin’ Joe’s pulled pork sandwiches and other tasty offerings cooked on an outdoor grill. There will be a lemonade stand and lots of sweet treats at the bake sale.

Tents will be set up, so this is a rain or shine event. Admission is free but donations to the store are encouraged.

Senior Center Jamboree Benefit BELLOWS FALLS – The Bellows Falls Area Senior Center will be hosting a dance jamboree at the Moose Family Center at 59 Westminster Street in Bellows Falls on Sunday, June 6 from 1-6 p.m. Live entertainment by Playin’ Possums.

Additionally, there will be raffles, door prizes, cash drawings, food and beverage sales. The jamboree is open to the public and entrance fee is $5.

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Community Players will hold auditions for the classic comedy, “The Curious Savage,” at 6:30 on Sunday, May 23, and Monday, May 24 at their Studio on South Street. Production dates are July 9-10 and 16 -17.

Students in Cemetary Walk

SPRINGFIELD – High school students in the Springfield area will have the opportunity to take the Community College of Vermont’s free course Introduction to College Studies this summer. Students who successfully complete the course become eligible to apply for a voucher to take an additional course, tuition-free, at any of the Vermont State Colleges.

“Introduction to College Studies is a great opportunity for high school juniors, even if they aren’t currently considering going to college,” says CCV’s Director of Secondary Initiatives Natalie Searle, “The course is flexible and allows students to explore their options regarding college, their possible major, and the steps involved in transitioning from high school to college. It covers everything from the application process and financial aid, to time management and note-taking.”

LUDLOW – Continuing a tradition established several years ago, students from Black River Middle School in conjunction with Black River Academy Museum will present "Voices From the Past", a cemetery walk at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow on Wednesday, May 26 starting at 6:30 p.m.

The project will feature students from the 8th grade at Black River Middle School, dressed in appropriate costumes, standing by the gravestone of people who once lived in the area. The students, based on their own research and assistance from BRAM, will provide a brief story about the person they studied and their contributions to the community they lived in. Frequently the person selected to be researched by the student is a relative.

Refreshments will be offered by BRAM at the museum following the walk. The program is free although donations will be accepted.

In the event on rain, the walk will be rescheduled for May 27.

Get In The Game A View On Sports By Editor Joe Milliken Local Diamond Action In Townshend, the Leland & Gray baseball team is putting together another fine season after recently crushing Black River, 20-2, in five innings. The win at press time, put the Rebels at 71 on the season as they attempt to defend their two-year run as Division III state champions.

Recently returning from injury, senior Tyler Russell got the start and went the first three innings for the win, with Brandon Reiley pitching the final two innings to preserve the victory.

Colin Nystrom led the offensive explosion for the Rebels with five hits, including a triple and four RBI's, while Russell helped his own cause with two hits and four RBI's. Reiley also pitched in with two hits and three RBI's.

--------------------------Staying in Townshend, the Leland & Gray softball recently edged out Mill River with a 4-3, extra-inning win over the Lady Minutemen.

The Rebels Chauncey Jones got the game winning hit, a one-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Leland & Gray's Nicole Sherman got the start and went the distance for the win, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out an impressive 13 Lady Minutemen.

The Rebels big inning came in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on RBI-hits from Colby Taylor and Betheny Burdick.

Burdick also tripled in the seventh, her second extra-base hit of the game. Mikayla Maniery led the offense for Mill River with two triples and a run scored.

At press time, the win was the sixth in a row for Leland & Gray, extending their record to 9-1. With the loss, Mill River fell to 9-3 on the season.

--------------------------The Springfield High School softball team recently traveled to Otter Valley, dropping a tough, 4-1 loss in Brandon.

A tough loss in the fact that the Lady Cosmos simply couldn't produce the big hit when they needed it most, leaving a whopping 10 runners on base through five innings.

Kaylee Pinson got the start for the Lady Otters and got the win, despite walking a tight rope the entire game. However, she bent - but did not break, giving up five hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Otter Valley scored two runs in the first inning on a Michaela Harrington RBI-hit and a bunt, then two more in the third on an outfield error.

--------------------------Staying in Springfield, the Cosmos baseball team was also in Brandon and lost a tough one themselves, with the Otters breaking a tie in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 Otter Valley win.

Senior Brandon Boyle led the offense for Springfield with three hits, while Matt Mitchell and Ethan McAllister pitched in with two hits each. McCallister also took the loss on the mound in relief.

BF's Julie Cermola got the big hit, a three-run homer run in the fifth inning which broke a 1-1 tie. Tia Billado drove in the other Terrier run.

Emma Shaw got the start for Bellows Falls and pitched well, giving up on one run and three hits, while striking out four. The only run for Burr & Burton scored on

a bases-loaded walk by Tamare Niles.

----------------------After a rough start to the season, the Burr & Burton baseball nine is fighting their way back into the mix, after recently knocking off Fair Haven, 13-2, for their second straight victory. The win (at press time) put the Bulldogs at 4-6 on the season.

This game was controlled, on the mound and at the plate, by BBA junior-right hander Ed Lewicki, who not only had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning, but also helped his own cause with three hits and four RBI's at the plate.

The win, at press time, put the Chieftains at 8-2 on the season.

In a rather strange contest, Green Mountain notched double-figures in runs, despite only registering three hits on the day and none after the first inning.

However when the Twin Valley pitchers walked nine hitters, hit four more and the defense commits four errors, you are bound to score a lot of runs. But credit Green Mountain for taking advantage of the opportunities.

Another big key to the win, however, was the pitching of junior lefty Mike Cavacas, who went the distance for the

Offensively, Green Mountain got all their hits in the first inning which produced five runs, fueled by a two-run single from sophomore Jake Walker and RBI-hits from junior Jason Albert and Dom Strohmeyer.

Superheroes Helping to Obliterate Cancer Story and Cover Photo by Robert F. Smith Photo this page Courtesy of Courtney McAuliffe BRATTLEBORO – Carolyn McAuliffe along with her daughters Courtney McAuliffe and Andrea McAuliffe Scott, are part of Team Superhero, which participates in the Windham County Relay for Life, a fundraiser in the fight against cancer. The next relay begins on Friday, June 11 at 6 p.m. and ends the next morning at 8, and takes place at the Brattleboro High School track.

The McAuliffes, like most of the other participants, have good reason to be so active in raising money for the ongoing battle against cancer. Carolyn lost her husband - and the girls their father – Larry "Babe" McAuliffe after a six year battle with cancer, in January 2001 at age 54.

One of the team’s fundraising efforts is they produce a cookbook each year, with corporate sponsors funding the printing and binding fees, and it is for sale at Knowlton’s Kitchen, a restaurant on Route 12 - Church Street - in North Walpole, NH for $10 a copy.

Another fundraiser for the & COSMETIC DENTISTRY event is that anyone can buy Adult Cosmetic Braces luminary bags. The bags are then decorated in the memory of a cancer victim, and then hundreds of candlelit bags are displayed on the edge of the relay track and in the bleachers during the overnight walk.

Carolyn and her daughters said they would like to see more participants in the relay from the Bellows Falls area. “There is music, games, a concession. It’s quite an event.”

Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor John McAveeney, the owner of Sunshine Acres Nursery and Garden Center, along with his wife Maureen, literally grew up in the nursery business. His parents ran a nursery in New Hampshire for over 60 years and John has been in the business himself since 1957.

This is the seventh year of operation for the Chester nursery, located on Route 11 on the road to Springfield.

Open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sunshine Acres has grown into the largest garden center in the Okemo Valley region, with five greenhouses and an extensive variety of plants and gardening supplies. Every year the McAveeneys bring in new varieties of plants and flowers, and this year is no exception. They are a certified Proven Winners nursery, which is the largest private label brand in the nation.

New this year also is the addition of Anita Basso, a wellknown Chester resident, to the sales staff.

No matter what type of gardening you prefer, Sunshine Acres can meet your needs. They carry Knockout Brand rose bushes in red, yellow and pink colors. They have a full line of vegetables and herbs, which is an expanding part of the gardening business, John noted, as more people are involved in raising at least some of their own food on a regular basis.

The center also carries manure, mulch and soil, and a collection of fruit trees and berry bushes. They are famous for their extra large, colorful hanging baskets, and this year they have again expanded their line of perennials.

“The weather this spring has gotten the growing season off to a slow start,” John said, “but we’re really looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend, which is the startup of the summer growing season.”

Epler and Rachel Epler, owners of the versatile food shop, began doing a Friday and Saturday night "fish fry," in following the tradition of Black River's always-popular fish fries.

"The fish fry increased our sales dramatically, despite only offering it two days a week," Epler said in a recent interview.

"Especially on the weekends, it was greatly increasing our dinner numbers, which also created the request and need for more seating."

Hence, the opening of their new snack bar, which will include additional indoor and outdoor seating, as well as an expansion of their sandwich and café menus as well.

"We know there are very few places in the area and especially in the Ludlow and Cavendish area, that have a similar offering and we feel our customers will truly benefit ," Epler added.

A few of the new snack bar menu offerings include fresh-fried seafood, burgers (created from local, grassfed beef) and McKenzie hot dogs.

"We have also now developed a kid's menu with most of the pricing under five dollars," Epler added. "We want families to be able to enjoy going out to dinner, without a huge expense."

Pleasant Valley Foods also offers lobster dinners, twin-lobsters and the "steampot special," which

includes lobster, mussels, fries and cole slaw, and they are also serving locally made Walpole Creamery (NH) Ice Cream. " It was our intention to create a similar feeling to a snack bar on the coast of Maine," Epler added.

One of our best selling departments is our seafood, so we want our new and updated menus to benefit from our fresh seafood resources."

This snack bar is unique, featuring many fresh and local foods with seafood delivered daily and battered to order.

"The snack bar is something we have been looking forward to doing since we opened in November, "Epler added.

"But of course we had to wait until the warm weather days. We will be offering free food samples for our “grand opening” this Saturday, both at the snack bar window and in the store.”
