Leaving a legacy in stone

World beat percussionist Tony Vacca spent last week at Flood Brook Union School in Londonderry, teaching 3rd and 7th graders some basic lessons in drumming, history, sociology and a whole lot more. A remarkable and enthusiastic teacher, seeing Tony in action with a group of young students is quite an experience.

Smith – Editor (Continued from the cover) Tony Vacca is by any set of standards a world class percussionist – he has performed with an amazing array of great musicians, including Sting, Senegalese Afro-pop star Baaba Maal, jazz trumpeter and World Music legend Don Cherry, poet Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets, Senegalese hip-hop stars Gokh-bi System, and Massamba Diop, Senegalese master of the tama or talking drum.

He also happens to be a world class teacher, as anyone who spent a few minutes in any of the classes he taught last week at Flood Brook Union School in Londonderry could quickly tell. During his week at the school working with 3rd and 7th graders, Vacca taught enough about percussion for the students to put on an extensive program for the school and parents at the end of the week.

But a class with Vacca teaches you a lot more than how to keep a beat. Vacca’s classes are filled with information – from women’s rights to social studies to history, geography, medicine and health – all delivered with humor, enthusiasm and erudition.

Trim and fit, Vacca doesn’t look or act like a man who will soon be 59. He brings a lot of energy to his teaching and his playing, and makes clear to the students that that is the way to approach whatever you are doing. He advises the students that they should not hold anything back when rehearsing, but give 100 percent to every performance.

“The concert is just another chance to play,” Vacca said. “You only get to play now, so turn up the volume now! You need to be in the moment, in the now. Play your best every time you play, even when you’re not feeling your best.”

He also cautioned them to give themselves time to learn, and to really go for it when they practiced.

He noted that evolution has prepared us to copy what we see and hear in order to learn it.

“We are the descendants of those who copied to learn,” he said. “Don’t hurry yourself to learn things that take time. Break things down step-bystep and learn a step at a time.”

Vacca then explained how he had been working on a five-part percussion piece that required a ®

different rhythm with both hands and both feet. At first he thought it would be too complex to learn, but then broke it down into five steps and learned them in order. At the end of the week, he’d learned the entire piece. “That piece is what I’ve been teaching you to play this week,” he told the surprised class.

All of this is part of Vacca’s belief that music is more than entertainment and musicians are more than just entertainers. Musicians have long used their music as a vehicle for social change, he said.

“Look at how musicians look and what they have to say, the things they talk about,” Vacca said. “Musicians tend to be the front dwellers, those on the edge of something new.”

The classes included a documentary of Vacca’s work in Senegal with some of Africa’s greatest percussionists and musicians, a project he’s been involved with for many years. It is part of his musical approach to life, perhaps best summed up in his comment, “Learn how to practice your generosity in your music.”

It’s a philosophy Tony Vacca lives every day.

Vacca’s residency was funded by The Green Mountain Festival Series and the Flood Brook Activities Cooperative.

During the fall and winter of 1983 and the spring of 1984, the old building of the Congregational Church was dismantled due to its being in unreparable condition.

Our Place Drop-in Center is organizing the event in an effort to fill its food shelves while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation to Our Place at 4 Island Street at 10 a.m. before taking a one- or two-mile walk around the village on designated routes. Maps will be provided.

Thanks for Successful Penny Sale Editor,the Outlook: The Ludlow Rotary’s Club 54th Annual Penny Sale was heavily attended by children and citizens near and far on Saturday, April 24. The proceeds from the Penny Sale benefit the club’s high school scholarship fund and community projects. Annually the Ludlow Rotary Club gives away up to $6,000 to high school seniors in surrounding towns.

RFPL’s Successful Broadaway Trip Editor, the Outlook: The Rockingham Free Public Library hosted its first annual Big Apple Broadway Trip on April 24.

The destination was the musical "Mamma Mia" and participants agreed the play and the trip were smash hits. Everything worked out perfectly: from a lively bus trip replete with music, box lunches and prizes, to the perfect NYC spring day, to the excitement of a live musical -- a terrific time was had by all.

The trip was also a very successful fundraiser for the library.

William “Billy” Perry February 8, 1956 – April 21, 2010 BELLOWS FALLS William "Billy" R. Perry Jr., 54, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at his home on North Ridge Road.

He was born Feb. 8, 1956, in Keene, NH, the son of William Sr. and Alice (Trombley) Perry.

He was a 1976 graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School and attended the Arkansas School for the Visually Impaired.

During high school, he was employed by his father for Aubuchon Hardware, as the maintenance person for the apartments above the retail store on the square. He was a member of the National CB Association, Bent Needle was his handle and the YMCA, attending the summer day camp yearly. Bill enjoyed science fiction, especially Star Trek, playing the guitar, listening to music, photography, swimming, and collecting antique muzzle loaders, coins and steins.

Bill is survived by his mother, Alice Perry of Bellows Falls; his sister Debra Collier and husband, Paul, of Westminster; a niece, Jennifer Washburn and husband Phillip; nephews, Thomas Collier and wife Jessica, and Christopher Dryden; and five greatnieces and nephews, Adam, Ethan, Brooke, Kaylee and Mia; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bill was predeceased by his father in 2008.

Just Neighbors Thanks Blue Flames Editor, the Outlook: A heartfelt and resounding thank you goes out to the Blue Flames Steele Band for their amazing generosity in playing a concert on May 2 to benefit the Just Neighbors organization.

Blue Flames founders Jim and Vicky Linville and Bob and Barbara Wells are self-taught musicians.

They formed their steel band 15 years ago to test the boundaries of steel panning and they have succeeded.

Weathersfield Honors Veterans By Restoring Veterans Monument Story by Joe Milliken Monument photo courtesy of Chip Cobb Park photo by Mary Moeykens Started in 2004, the Town of Weathersfield and the Weathersfield Veterans Memorial Committee ( V M C ) h a v e b e e n w o r k i n g h a rd t o re p l a c e a World War II honor roll monument that for years, was located at the intersection of Route 5 and Route 131 in Ascutney.

We a t h e r s f i e l d c u r re n t l y has two war monuments that recognize service to our Nation, i n c l u d i n g a C i v i l Wa r O b e l i s k a n d a “ f i r s t 2 0 0 year since inception” milestone, which are both located at Weathersfield Center.

The lost World War II monument, which listed the names of 59 veterans on its’ scroll, is believed to have been either moved or destroyed in the early 1960’s during construction of what is now Interstate 91.

After a Weathersfield resident had brought this to the attention of the Weathersfield Select board in 2004, it was suggested that a new monument be created to honor those and all veterans, the Board established the VMC to further explore the creating of a new monument.

An agency fund was then established with an a p p ro p r i a t i o n o f $ 2 , 0 0 0 f o r t h e i n i t i a l d e s i g n , advertising and information dissemination, with the VMC committed to raising the balance of funds to finish the project through fund raising, donations and possible grants.

The committee decided on a two-component memorial, a monument created from local stone, along with an educational exhibit so that young people can be educated about serving our nation.

Currently, the focus remains on the monument

itself, with the educational component following the competition of the monument.

Local stone artisan Aaron Fitzhebert of Tribute Artistry Monuments was chosen to design and c re a t e t h e m o n u m e n t , i n w h i c h h e i s w o r k i n g closely with the select board through the entire process.

In 2005, a clay model of the monument was created, while the names of all the veterans was also being researched and compiled.

The VMC and the select board then agreed to place the monument on the southern tip of the P e r k i n s v i l l e G re e n , i n w h i c h a n e a s e m e n t w a s signed between the Perkinsville Church Trustees and the Town of Weathersfield.

In 2006 a financial support request was sent to U. S. Senator Bernie Sanders, while personal donations from Weathersfield residents and local businesses were collected.

Along with various other town events to raise funds, over $9,000 was collected, making the project balance over $11,000.

With an estimated cost of the project at some $55,000, there was still a lot of work to be done.

However with the continued hard work of the committee and the assistance of Senator Sanders, the project was just recently rewarded a $45,000 grant for the completion of the monument. “ T h e l a rg e s t c re d i t s h o u l d g o t o S e n a t o r Sanders, who did a lot in arranging the grant for us,” stated Chip Cobb, who is the Chair of Weathersfield Veterans Memorial Committee and a retired Colonel of the U.S. Army.

While the committee awaits the grant funds, fund drives are continued to raise money such as chicken barbeques, plant sales and a walk-athon.

Upon the completion of the monument, the placing of the monument and dedication ceremony is planned for sometime this year.

The Logger: UVM Speaker Material?

Small chance UVM officials will consider me as a speaker. I understand. At UVM, the powers-that-be are too busy to know who is out there offering something more relevant and entertaining than the likes of a Howard Dean or Ben Stein (two folks who’ve raised their reputations to a rarefied level).

Students and their families need me as their speaker.

I know how a person should perform, first and foremost, when delivering a graduation speech. Brief — that’s it; one should be brief.

Graduation speakers provide a service that is totally expendable; few speakers act as if they realize that. Too bad for grandmothers who travel hundreds of miles to sit for hours in the blazing heat listening as the speaker trumpets, “Back when I signed my first book contract I had no idea...blah, blah, blah.”

There are those who love hearing themselves speak, an attribute that fuels their ability to find ways to be heard. If they succeed in being heard, and what they’re saying is the least bit interesting, they gain notoriety — notoriety that lands them on the list from which speakers are chosen. It’s a vicious cycle. A cycle we must stop.

A better commencement speaker for UVM to consider might be someone meek; you’ve got to believe those who’ll inherit the Earth are worth more of a listen than those who believe the Earth is lucky to have them.

I place myself in the former group—the unmeek kind.

Next commencement speech I give, I wish I have nerve enough to buck up and be humble. Maybe I should give the speech I wrote while on a country walk today? Here goes:

I like giving graduation speeches and I’ll keep doing them, for free (so long as I keep getting asked).

I won’t say I’m good or bad at it; I’ll just say, I try to be humble, aware of others, and brief.

Do you know I received a polite call from a nice lady in UVM’s president’s office thanking me for thinking of them and offering my services? She said by the time they’d received my note, a speaker had already been chosen. She passed my material on to the committee to consider during next years search. The lady who spoke with me has children in a school where I have given graduation speeches. She’s the main reason I might have a chance to be UVM’s graduation speaker — some day.

It’s not what you know it’s who you know. You can’t get a hit if you don’t swing. What is there to lose? You never know. All those sayings have merit. Believe me.

Last year, UVM chose Ben Stein as its graduation speaker. A smart financial guy, comedian, actor, writer, speaker, and political talking head.

UVM President Fogel has a connection to Mr. Stein that allowed the booking to occur.

Mr. Stein’s thoughts about evolution, that he had expressed at an earlier campus appearance, irked a number of students; thus, they protested his booking. UVM scrapped Mr. Stein’s presentation.

Ben wasn’t happy. Ah, spilled milk. Instead, UVM booked ex-Gov. Howard Dean to speak. Mr. Stein’s fee was to have been up around near seven or eight grand — a healthy discount, Mr. Stein said, from his usual speaking fee.

As of April 19, news items contained information that UVM hadn’t chosen their 2010 commencement speaker. I e-mailed the UVM ceremonies office listing my speech topics, and my credentials; vast graduation speaker experience, varied and deeply rooted involvement with Vermont communities, spotless business and personal standing in the state. And when senior classes choose me as their commencement speaker, I take time to visit the students months before the event. Can’t imagine showing up on the day never having met them. Schools offer a fee for graduation speeches. I always decline. I wrote UVM I’d accept a fee if they chose me. I think they’d be wise to consider me.

NEWS & NOTES FOR THE SPRINGFIELD REGION SAPCC Duck Race & Groundbreaking SPRINGFIELD – Duck race tickets for the Springfield Area Parent Child Center ’s 4th Great Annual Duck Race are now on sale. Tickets will be sold at local hot spots within the communities served by the Center the weekend of May 15 and 16. The event will be held on Sunday, May 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the SAPCC grounds located at 26 Main Street in North Springfield.

Smith – Editor Stone mason Dan Field, of Londonderry’s DRC Stone Design, is one of those people who gets to work in a profession where he knows that the majority of his projects – walls, walks, barbeque pits, fireplaces – will live much longer than he will. The 162 linear feet of winding stone wall that he is just now completing at a remote home in Landgrove, top photo, is so well built it will stand for centuries. The wall also includes a unique set of stone steps – 10 feet wide stone steps – that can be seen in the bottom photo. This particular project also includes a stone floor in one of the property’s outbuildings, which required careful hand-cutting and fitting. Guerrilla Grown Farming as Revolution

Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor (Continued from the cover) Cory Walker began his love affair with farming over a decade ago when he began working as a field hand on an organic farm on Martha’s Vineyard when he was just 15. By the time he turned 18, he was managing the farm.

During the years he worked on the Vineyard farm, the Community Supported Agriculture part of it – where people buy a weekly ration of vegetables supplied by the farmer – grew from 30 to 350 members, and the acres under cultivation quadrupled from 20 to 80.

Walker attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst, MA, but says that his experience farming is what has taught him the most.

“I love working for myself, and I love being outside,” Walker said. “I love producing good food and sharing it with my friends and family.’

He came to Vermont and created Guerrilla Grown Produce three years ago, leaving Massachusetts to be with his partner Adreana Porteur. She operates the Downstreet Cafe on Canal Street in Bellows Falls, which specializes in locally grown foods, much of it from Walker.

At this point in his move to Vermont, Walker has 4.5 acres under organic cultivation at two spots in Westminster, most notably at Hope Roots Farm on Route 5. His speciality is leafy green and baby green salad mixes, but also a lot of what he refers to as “simple harvest” crops like cabbage, potatoes, squash, melons and cucumbers.

Chester Artist Barre Pinske Completes Dinosaur Of A Project Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Photos courtesy of Barre Pinske Meet Chester-based artist Barre Pinske, who along with his apprentice Suzie Fronhofer, recently completed an interesting commissioned project – a dinosaur-themed seating area for a pediatric dentist office based in Milford, CT. So how did this unique project come about?

“I met Dr. Jesus Villegas and his wife Fresolina while the were here on a winter ski trip,” Pinske stated in a recent, exclusive interview.

“The first project I worked on for the Villegas’ was a family of three bear carvings, two bears wearing coveralls and one in a coverall skirt, representing their three children.

“My second project for them was a ‘twig and resin’ bartop for Jesus’ private office, casting small pieces of branches in colored resin, then sanding it flat to create a mosaic of colored, resin-end grain wood.”

After these projects, the Villegas became interested in creating a different decor for their dental office,

something playful and fun for the kids in the waiting room.

“The dinosaur theme was suggested by Fresolina, who also works at the office," Pinske added. (continued on next page)

Artist, Pinske (continued from page 10) "Next, Suzie and I made a trip down to see the Villegas' at their new office, and began taking measurements of the space and drawing sketches.

“The goal was to create unique seating for 16 people, adults as well as children."

Pinske's experience working with foam and fiberglass allowed the team to create the large dinosaur bench that was both strong and light weight, while Suzie created the upholstery work.

"It was certainly quite interesting attempting to do all the different aspects of this project," Pinske said.

"Today, you have to be a salesman, artist, designer, fabricator and delivery man. You need to wear several hats when you are trying to make a living in the arts."

There may be a mural painting in the works next, to tie the whole project together.

"The Villegas are some of the nicest people I have ever worked with," Pinske concluded. "The stress of opening a new office had to be immense, yet they treated us like gold.

“In this business you need good patrons and I am very lucky to have chosen such a great community to promote my artistic endeavors."

BF Middle School Spring Arts Festival BELLOWS FALLS – The Bellows Falls Middle School Unified Arts Department will present a Spring Arts Festival on Wednesday, May 19, in the school’s cafeteria. The Festival will include a display of student art work, Powerpoint presentations, a pops concert, and light refreshments. The Art Show will open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7.

Mary Lou Massucco’s art students will be demonstrating their creative arts in the cafeteria.

Stop by to try out some painting and other art materials with the kids. The highlight of the show will be a display of papier maché dogs and foil bird sculptures. Also on display will be student paintings and block prints. Art work includes landscapes, nature, portraits and still life.

The pops concert will feature performances by the Level 1 and Level 2 Choruses, Select Chorus, and the Jazz Band. All choral ensembles are under the direction of Joan LaClair.

The 'World Cultures' classes of Mr. Dube at the Bellows Falls Middle School will have several of his students' Powerpoint computer presentations on laptops for perusal. In addition, many posters made by his students this year of countries where either French or Spanish is spoken will be made available.

The evening will conclude with the BFMS Jazz Band under the direction of Stanley Rumrill, Jr.

High School Action In Springfield, the Lady Cosmos softball team recently won a squeaker against Green Mountain, 2-1, to avenge a loss earlier in the season to the Lady Chieftains.

Sarah Vredenburgh wrapped a single in the

bottom of the seventh inning to knock in Alexis Locke the wining run, in a game that had to be continued from a previous day.

The teams had been previously tied 1-1, two days earlier when the game was suspended due to darkness.

Ashley Richardson got the start for Springfield, retiring 11 out of 12 batters, giving up only a two-out double to Carly Stouffer in the top of the seventh inning.

Sarah Groshens took the loss for Green Mountain, who fell (at press time) to 5-3 on the season, while Springfield improved to 5-4.

The Brattleboro High School softball team recently traveled to Manchester to take on Burr & Burton, knocking off the lady Bulldogs, 132.

Brattleboro’s Sydney Santore powered the offense with three hits, including a grand slam and five RBI’s and four runs scored, while Bri Adams also pitched in with three hits.

Kayla Wood got the start for Brattleboro, going the distance while only giving up two hits while striking out 10.

--------------------------In Brattleboro, the Colonels baseball team also took on Burr &

Burton in a doubleheader and beating the Bulldogs twice, 15-6 and 4-0.

Pitching was the key for Brattleboro on this day, as Devin Rhodes and Ryan Smith each three two-hitters at Burr & Burton in the sweep.

Offensively, Soren Pelz-Walsh had three hits and two RBI’s for Brattleboro, while Marl La Valley knocked in three in the first win.

In the night cap, Smith went the distance and stuck out nine, as TJ Oliver took the loss for the Bulldogs.

--------------------------In Ludlow, the Black River softball team won

it’s eighth straight game without a loss, knocking off Mount St. Joseph, 160, in five innings.

The three-time defending champion Lady Presidents are now an amazing 57-6 over the last three-and-a-half seasons.

Angie Valente got the start for Black River and went four innings to get the win, with Amanda Chambers coming in to strike out the side in the fifth.

Senior Tina Valente led the offense for Black River with four hits, while Chambers pitched in with three. Kaitlyn Gawet took the loss for MSJ.

In Townshend, the Leland & Gray baseball team recently kept an undefeated season alive with a 9-5 win over Twin Valley, their fifth win in a row.

The Rebels scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and four more in the second to essentially put the game away.

Gabe Pozzi got the start for the Rebels, pitching the first five innings to get the win, while freshman Drew Barnum pitched the final two innings to preserve the win.

Tyler Miller led the Rebel offense with two hits and two RBI’s.

Chiefs Edge Out Black River In Nail-Biter Story and photos by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor In a recent nail-biter in Chester, the Green Mountain Union High School baseball team scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to squeak out a 5-4 win over rival Black River, at Paul Adams Field.

The tight, last inning win for the Chiefs, came after the Presidents had tied the game up in the top half of the seventh

with two runs of their own.

Green Mountain got a couple runs early without the benefit of an RBI-hit, grabbing an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning on a wild pitch from Black River starter Chris Kowalski, before getting another in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk.

Junior fire-baller Jason Albert got the start for Green Mountain and

pitched two scoreless innings, but had to come out of the game because of pitch count rules.

Mike Cavacas entered the game for the Chiefs and pitched the next 4 and 1/3 innings before Dom Strohmeyer came into pitch the seventh for Green Mountain.

Trailing 4-2 headed into the seventh inning, Black River rallied for two runs to tie the game, before Green Mountain rallied in the seventh

when Albert walked, stole second base and scored the winning run on an error to end the game.

Black River used four pitchers in the game including Kowalski, Tim Rumrill, Riken Patel and Kippie Turco.

The win (at press time) put the Green Mountain Chieftains at 5-2 on the season while the Black River Presidents dropped to 4-5 on the season.

Senior Brandon Boyle got the start for the

Cosmos and got the win, while Jeremy Currie pitched in relief to preserve the win with seven strike outs.

The two pitchers combined on a twohitter, while senior Ben Hewitt got the start for the Terriers and suffered

the loss.

Taylor Fontaine and Matt Mitchell led the Cosmos’ offense with two hits each, while Brendan Hackett got both hits for the Terriers, who at press time, fell to 3-7 on the season.

Springfield U-14 Pumas Place In Tournament

Story by Joe Milliken, Sports Editor, photo courtesy of Bruce Schmidt The Springfield U-14 soccer club recently competed in the Plattsburgh State College soccer tournament, finishing in fourth pace overall in a crowded field of teams. Playing on the artificial turf of Plattsburgh State College soccer complex, the Pumas pulled out a 3-1 win in their first match, before falling to Plattsburg, 2-1 in their second match. The Pumas then bounced back with an impressive 6-1 win.

In the semi-final match again eventual tournament winner, the Nordic Soccer Club from Burlington, the Pumas played tough and never gave up, before falling 6-1. Puma goals on the day came from Morgan Kathan (4 goals, 3 assists), Blakely Gilmore (1 goal, one assist), Sarah Rumrill (4 goals, 2 assists), Meghan Thomas (1 goal), Gabriele Miele (1 assist), Madeline Morse (1 goal) and Kendra Dana (1 goal).

“These girls came here last year and got schooled,” coach Jeff Loche said after the tournament. “But this year we did a litle schooling of our own. I was impressed with our defense and and our ability to adjust as needed, to the different styles and teams we played.”

On Youth Market Day, students in grades kindergarten through 12 are

invited to join the market as a vendor free of charge. On that day, they are encouraged to sell anything that they have grown, made or harvested.
