Chester Masons To Give Old Fort At No. 4 Helping Hand vote within the Olive Branch Lodge # 64 and discussions with the State Grand Masters from Vermont and New Hampshire.

Closed since 2009 because of various economic pressures, the living history museum and historical education center is looking to rebound with this recent outreach of assistance from the Masons.

“The Fort at No. 4 has been an important historical education center within the Connecticut River Valley,” Olive Branch Lodge Secretary Donald Webster said in a recent interview.

“We did not want to see the Fort remain closed and add to the threateed loss of colonial and early American historical centers.”

The Lodge will be primarily concentrating their efforts on fund raising, marketing and finding volunteers.

“We will also be looking to other lodges throughout the region to join Olive Branch Lodge in support of the Fort.”

“One of the Chester Masons, who was interested in seeing the Fort survive, was the person who brought this to the Masons,” said Paul Truax, who is Master of Olive Branch Lodge #64 as well as a Fort At No. 4 Board Member.

It was then, the Masons who approached the Fort's Board with the concept that the Masonic community, in the first instance the Vermont and New Hampshire Masons, might be of help in fund raising, marketing and bringing volunteers to the Fort.

Humane Society to Yard Sale PITTSFORD– The Rutland County Humane Society is holding a yard sale to raise money for the homeless

animals in Rutland County. The event will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford.

We are happy to announce that, even during these tough economic times, we exceeded last year ’s donations.

LVRS’s call volume has been increasing steadily over the past several years and the miles are adding up. LVRS will be purchasing a new transporting ambulance in 2010 with an expected delivery in late 2010 or early 2011. The funds raised this year will be directly applied to this exciting new purchase.

We would also like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to our local businesses and special friends for their donations of the raffle prizes that helped to make the Benefit the great success it was.

LVRS raises funds within the community each year in order to continue to provide free ambulance and rescue services to the tri-mountain towns of Bondville, Jamaica, Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, South Londonderry, Stratton, Weston, Windham, and Winhall.

The funds raised will cover the squad’s day-to-day operating expenses, training, ambulance maintenance and replacement, and the purchase of equipment and supplies. In 2009, LVRS responded to more than almost 500 emergency calls and the vast majority required emergency transport to an area hospital.

One of the best places to enjoy that pleasure is at the Walpole Creamery on Route 12 in Walpole, NH. The little Walpole scoop shop gives scant indication of the fact that Walpole Creamery ice cream is some of the best in the world – and they’ve got the awards to prove it. Their ice cream has been named the best madefrom-scratch in New Hampshire in 2009 and has won numerous newspaper reader awards as the best ice cream in the region.

Jeremiah Tyrrell, a native resident of Proctorsville, has just opened Little Village Farm, CSA. “I’ve turned over more than a half an acre of land and my early planters are already growing. It is going to be a wonderful growing season” says Tyrrell, whose dream has always been to farm.

This year's crop map includes nearly 30 planted vegetables and a variety of herbs as well.

The idea of fresh, community based food isn’t novel, with flourishing CSA‘s outside of many metropolitan areas, but is a recent addition to the Northeast.

The goal is to re-connect communities, get a lot of hands in the ground and work together towards a self-sustaining lifestyle. Families can purchase a full share or split a share with another family.

The farmer does all the planting, weeding, and harvesting; and the families pick up their produce weekly during the 16 week harvest season. For families who want to participate there is also a working share for a lesser cost.

Little Village Farm CSA is still filling shareholder slots for the 2010 growing season.

He also began his musical career here and was involved with several Southern Vermont bands before moving to Tucson to work for, and get a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, at the University of Arizona, where he has been a sign language interpreter since 1996.

Chef Jason Tostrup – Eating Real, Local & Fresh rest of Chef Tostrup’s line.

Tostrup was named Vermont Chef of the Year in 2008, has won numerous other awards, and the inn itself was named one of Bon Appetit Magazine’s 2008 Hot Culinary Inns.

Tostrup traces his interest in cooking back to his childhood church growing up in Minnesota. One member of the church was cookbook author, teacher and food writer Beatrice Ojakangas, and she cultivated his early interest in the culinary arts. He would go on to cooking school in St. Paul right out of high school, and eventually get a degree in Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Wisconsin.

Big influences on his culinary career and his choices to focus on local foods simply prepared was the work of Chef Alice Waters and University of Vermont Professor Dr. Amy Trubek and her writings on the connection of food and culture, and in particular her book The Taste of Place.

After college he apprenticed with mainly French chefs in New York City, and was mentored by Chef Charles Dale in California’s Napa Valley for eight years.

“I started at the bottom with him, and worked up to executive chef,” Tostrup said. “In California we 190 Main St., Ludlow 90075 focused on local foods.”

“I found the Weathersfield Inn online,” Tostrup said. “They were looking for a chef.”

Sharing the same philosophy about food was the key, and Tostrup took the chef ’s position at the inn five years ago. At top, Chef Jason Tostrup prepares to butcher a side of locally and humanely raised veal; and locally wild-harvested leeks, known by its Native name as a winnoski. The leeks are available for only a short window of time in the spring. Chef Tostrup uses them in a pesto that lasts him all year. “didn’t happen overnight.” It requires learning to work with that particular farmer or rancher on a day to day basis, and it also requires great flexibility on the part of the chef, in that the menu will change day-byday depending on what food and meats are available.

“We started with beef, then added pork, lamb and finally veal,” he said. “We’re essentially adding one farmer or rancher at a a time, based on three criteria: Does it taste good? Is it high quality. Is it produced in a fair and ethical way? We want our food to be good for the community we live in. We go out and meet the farmers, tasting the food they produce on the land where they produce it.”

Chef Tostrup also has a “head to tail” food philosophy of using every part of any animal he butchers. His menu reflects that in that it is fresh, local food presented elegantly and simply. With a menu in the $15-$20 range, Chef Tostrup seems to have done that admirably and affordably as well.

Get In The Game A View On Sports By Editor Joe Milliken

Local Game Action I must begin my column this week with a correction and an apology. Yup, it is confirmed, sports editors make mistakes too.

In my annual "spring sports preview," which ran in the April 14 edition of the Outlook, I mistakenly stated that the Black River High School softball team had failed to win their third consecutive, Division IV state title last season.

When in fact, coach Luigi Valente's Lady Presidents have indeed, won three consecutive state titles.

During this impressive

run, the Black River softball team have won (at press time) 13 games in a row and an amazing 42 out of their last 44 games.

Now that is what you call a dynasty! My apologies and "hats off" to the Lady Presidents, and to read about Black River's latest victim , you need look no further to the next page.

--------------------------In Chester, the Green Mountain Union High School softball team recently slammed Twin Valley, 21-3, in Wilmington.

Sarah Groshens got the start and win for the Lady Chiefs, while also helping her own cause with a 3-6 effort at the plate.

Other offensive contributions came from Jenny Kennedy who went 3-5 and Laura Hoffman who pitched in with a 2-4 effort.

Bryer-Lyn Crawford went 2-4 for Twin Valley, while Asley Lawless also pitched in with two hits.

The Green Mountain

baseball team also had an easy go of it against Twin Valley, busting out for 13 runs in the fifth inning, on their way to a 25-14 victory.

Junior Jason Albert was the hitting star, including a two-run home run and a two-run double in the same inning. T. J. Slade got the win for the Chieftains.

--------------------------In Springfield, the Lady Cosmos softball team recently played a nail-biter with Otter Valley, dueling to a scoreless tie through four innings, before the Otters got single runs in the last three innings to pull out a 3-0 win.

Ashley Richardson pitched well but took the loss for Springfield, scattering 10 hits and giving up two earned runs with three strike outs.

Erin Graham led the Lady Cosmos offense with two hits.

-------------------------The Cosmos baseball team did not fair any better against the Otters,

dropping a 13-6 loss in Springfield. At press time, the Cosmos were at 5-3 on the season.

This was a tough loss in the fact that the Cosmos held a 6-3 lead after six innings but could not hold off Otter Valley in the seventh, as they scored a whopping 10 runs on three hits, three walks and five Cosmos errors.

-------------------------In Townshend, the Leland & Gray Rebels continued to roll with an impressive, 16-0 win over Proctor in six innings.

Colin Nystrum got the big hit for the Rebels with a three-run triple, while Trevor How pitched five innings for the win with six strike outs.

-------------------------The Black River High School softball team is on another roll, knocking off Arlington on the road, 15-0.

The win follows up a perfect game at home against West Rutland (see game story on next page).

Senior Amanda Chambers threw a two-

hit shut out including 10 strike outs in the win, while also helping her own cause with three hits.

Angie Valente added three hits, two RBI's and three runs scored, while Ashley Billings and Sarah Hawkins pitched in with two hits each.

The win (at press time) put Black River at 7-0 and counting.

-------------------------The second round of the NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing, with the Bruins and Celtics in the thick of it.

What Bruins fan would have thought that the B’s would actually get the home-ice advantage to start the second round, but that is exactly what happened as they took on the Philadelphia Flyers at the TD Garden on Saturday.

It is the first time that the Big Bad Bruins and the Broad Street Bullies have knocked heads in the playoffs since the mid-1970’s when it was really a rivalry.

At press time, the

Bruins lead the series one game to none, after a thrilling overtime victory in game one as Marc Savard returned to action (after missing several weeks with a concussion) to score the gamewinner.

The Celtics did not fare as well in the first game of their second series against the Cavaliers, as Labron James and company staged a huge comeback to take game one over the C’s.

Don’t give up on the Celtics just yet though, as Kevin Garnett appears healthy again and you never know what can happen in a seven game series.

The Big Four (Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajan Rondo) will really need to come up big, though, in order for Boston to pull off the upset.

If you really think about it and although James is the best player in this series, the next four best players in this match up are all Celtic players.

Terriers Fall Hard In Loss To Yellow Jackets Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Photos by Doug MacPhee The Bellows Falls Union High School baseball team had a bad week. Period.

Coming off a tough loss to Otter Valley a few days earlier, the Terriers followed up a 15-run loss with an even tougher one, a 20-1, five-inning

loss at the hands of Woodstock.

"We seem to be going backwards,” Terrier coach Bob Lockerby told reporters after the game.

"We can't hit and we can't field. We've got a few things to work on."

Alex Drost got the start for the Yellow Jackets and pitched five strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits,

with three strike outs and just two bases-on-balls.

The Terriers pitching on the other hand, gave up 12 hits, eight walks, two hit-batsmen and the BF defense also made five errors, including two foul pop-ups that failed to even be touched.

You are not going to win too many games with those types of numbers.

Even more frustrating is the fact that the Terriers had beaten this same Windsor team not two weeks ago in a tightly contested, wellplayed game.

To make matters worse, BF could not get any offense going against Windsor starter Drost, with Ben Hewitt, Brendan Hackett and Luke Brophy getting the only hits in the game.

Valente Fires Perfect Game As Lady Presidents Roll Story and photos by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Although her teammates gave her plenty of offense to work with, it was not needed as this one was all Angie Valente.

The Black River juniorhurler fired a perfect game at West Rutland, mowing down every batter she faced in a 27-0, five-inning drubbing of the Lady Presidents over the Golden Horde.

Miss Valente's impressive numbers: five innings, no runs, no hits, no walks and six strike outs.

Coming into the game at 5-0, the three-time defending state champion Lady Presidents left no doubt about this one from the getgo, batting around the order in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back.

Coach Luigi Valente, who

also happens to be Angie's father, told reporters after the game that it was the first perfect game thrown by a Lady President in his 17 seasons as their coach.

The offense was led by Katie O'Neil, Sam Norton and Sarah Hawkins, who each had two hits, while Katelyn Palmer had a big, two-run double in the onslaught.

Black River Baseball Rolls Past West Rutland Story and photos by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor The Black River High School baseball team recently went up against West Rutland, slamming the Golden Horde, 22-7 in five innings, at Pullinen Field in Ludlow.

Senior-first baseman Chris Kowalski led the offensive surge for the

Presidents, knocking six singles in six at bats, while Jake Covell and Noah Schmidt pitched in with two hits each.

Tim Rumrill got the start for Black River and went the first three innings to get the win, while Covell pitched the final two frames. The win put Black River at 4-2 on

the season.

For West Rutland, Tyler Bathalon got the start and took the loss, but also had some shaky defense behind him.

Greg Duprey led the Golden Horde offense with three hits, including two doubles and three RBI's.
